Pam Hopkins has no business teaching public speaking. she grades completely irrationally. I am a communication/marketing major. I have no difficulty speaking in front of people and I love doing it. This woman butchered every speach I wrote, and gave no/li
i dont think she's as mean as everyone depicts her to be, but i did expect a higher grade than what i got. try taking someone else if you can.
the tests should be on her kids
If you can take someone else, PLEASE DO SO!! She is horrible. She grades too hard, and she butchers every speech. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!
The only time she's bad to you is if you're bad to her, she's nice and she's fair, she just grades kinda strictly on the speeches. Overall she's a good teacher,if you can't take criticism take someone else, she won't blow sunshine up your butt.
She was confussing at times, but we didn't have class a lot. It is easy to get ahead if you e-mail her questions, and simply show up to class. The attendance points really help out in this class.
I can't say she is a horrible teacher and I wouldn't say she is mean either....but she does kill your speeches, she grades realy hard!
On regular lecture days she can be the coolest teacher alive. It's speeach days be careful. It seems like she grades you on everything from how you walk up to the podium to how your mouth moves.
You actually have to work for your grade in this clas. very helpful and cares about the students.Do the work, follow the rules and you'll be fine.
GOOD LUCK!!! If you are a guy and are cute then you are in there.... Otherwise, drop her!! don't do it!!! she fails about 1/2 the class... Drop it now before she kills your GPA!!!
Just put it this way... I prepared for my first two speeches and got an A and a B. The third one I waited til the night before and stayed up til 6 in the morning and got a D. Just be prepared and you will do fine because I think she is a cool teacher.
If you want to learn how to speek, take her class. She knows her stuff and she grades you hard, but you learn from it. Prepare and listen and you'll do fine.
One student was giving a speech on the importance of wearing seat belts because she and a friend were in an accident. She was not wearing her seat belt and the other person was and Hopkins said she had no authority to tell ppl why to wear seat belts!
preperation is key. If you dont look down at your note cards the whole time you will do fine. dont be afraid to ask questions b/c she is helpful..
Pam is my advisor, and has been since I began my freshman year at ECU three years ago. he's a very caring and genuine person. However, I'm not dumb enough to take one of her classes because YES, she is hard.she believes in making you work for good grades!
She is very nice and creates a comfortable atmosphere in her class. As long as you make sure to hit every requirement for each speech (which she usually tells you) you'll be fine. Demanding, but useful class.
She is a very nice lady, but all business in class with a very harsh attendance policy and strict grading attittude. You will work for the grade. Dont take her class....do 2420
Great class. I learned a lot. She's not hard--just expects a lot. If you want to learn how to be a good speaker, take her class!
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! YOU WILL KILL YOUR GPA
She sucks. I definetly prepared for every speech and went to her office for help and still made a C. If your a good looking outgoing guy you'll do fine....if you a girl I'd get another professor.
She's extremely tough on your speeches but go to her before and ask for help and advice. She's very professional but also very helpful- there are also other assignments to help bring up your class grade (if your speeches were so-so.)

She is a very sweet lady, however not the best teacher.she is very unclear about assignments and may mention something one time in class and then take off like 25 pts on a speech for not doing that one thing.she does NOT give u very much guidance and when u are assigned something u will feel totally lost and confused.take someone else if u can!!
she's nice but makes things way more dificult then need be!your speech grades will kill your avg.the final was open book and the test asked us to "list" something from the book, however she said she didn't want us to use what the book said??.when i met w/my group for a project all we did was talk about how much we hated the class.TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
When I took her, I was petrified of speaking in front of a group. She gave me good practice and instruction, and now I speak to hundreds on a daily basis. She is compassionate and receptive, and will give you the confidence to grow and shine. Enjoy!
Before Hopkins teaches another class, she should first evaluate her own credentials and abilities. I have never in my life been subjected to such rediculous standards or favoratism, especially by someone as underquaified as her. DO NOT GET HER AS A PROFESSOR!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. She has ridiculously difficult standards and teaches it like a grad level class. Speech grades kill your average...you will be lucky to get a B. VERY unfair and picks favorites. if you like your gpa where it is, DO NOT TAKE HER FOR THIS CLASS!
As a person she is really nice and understanding. As a instructor she needs to take it down a couple of notches and give us students a break. Like someone said earlier, will kill your GPA. P.S. Guys you better have a jacket to wear to for your speach or you will get a very bad grade!
Prof. Hopkins is an excellent professor!! I've never had a professor that was so enthusiastic about teaching a class... She is a must take and is willing to help you on anything!!
I made mostly As but the speeches brought my grade down to a C. Our class average was a 70. After talking to her, you will STILL wonder how the heck she came up with your grade. Her grading is questionable! Take this class with another professor! She is very nit picky and didn't give us details for the last speech until 2 days before it was due!
She's very nice and willing to help you, but she's unorganised. She'll change info from the syllabus with no warning. Gives you little time to write speeches.
She's a lovely woman, but a bad professor. You must follow the outline, but she doesn't explain it. There's little to no room for creativity. Her standards are never explained and after she explains grading, you still don't understand.
i think that ms. hopkins is a great teacher. the tests are easy, open book and online. she is very good with feedback. she is a stickler for details so make sure you follow the guidelines and directions for speeches PERFECTLY! this class was a piece of cake and actually pretty fun. talk to her outside of class and she will help you with anything

Professor Hopkins is a tough grader, but all assignments are explained clearly in class and in the syllabus.Classes are fun, even at 8 on MWF. Go to class, do the work, and don't expect an A for nothing.
Not Fair ... Got off subject alot.
Professor Hopkins is a great teacher! She is so enthusiastic about public speaking and will help you with anything if you ask. Here tests are easy and she is extremely clear about what she wants for the speaches. Follow directions closely, speak enthusiastically, go to class and you'll get an A!
DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Unless you're a brown noser, she won't like you. She will make time for her favorites but if someone else asks for help she walks away. How she grades is impossible! I give speeches for a living but yet I failed her speeches? How? I was unorganized but I had everything she wanted!? I don't get it. Don't take her!
Mrs. Hopkins is a hard teacher! I took her public speaking class online and it is hard to get a response from her if you have a question. I thought I did pretty good on my speeches, but yet she always found something wrong with them. She needs to "lighten up" a little and realize this should be a FUN learning experience.
Super nice person! Mite get off subject, but so funny. Grades hard. Practice speeches a lot. Test ?s are from the book. Test may be harder than you think so study. Not always mandatory to be in class, but still go anyway. Put more effort into the class the more willing to help you out. Lots of writing, dont wait till last minute to do work.
SO nice and funny! Great teacher, loves public speaking.Don't wait till the last minute to do your work, practice your speeches, study for the tests and you will do great. FOLLOW HER ORGANIZATION. She is pretty picky so learn from your mistakes for your future speeches. If you go to class and put in the effort you'll do great!I recommend her highly!
Mrs. Hopkins may be a great public speaker, but she is a sorry professor. She is completely unorganized and grades harder than any teacher I have ever had. You will be dissappointed if you take her class expecting an easy A.
Great teacher..easy quizes speeches are graded tough but there are extra credit oppurtunities
Avoid her if you can. She is very petty and grades on aspects other than your public speaking ability.
regret regret regert, dont take her. take her unless u r a robot. she is mean
Don't try to do anything fresh or different in terms of your topics. A speech that is different than the norm due to the forum it's designed for, regardless of it being done correctly for that particular type of speech delivery, will get you a C or worse. If you need it as DE, try any other univ. as the audience requirements are overbearing(8)
I thought this class would be cake when I registered. Not even. Requires extensive reading of the textbook and studying of notes. Hopkins is a good speaker and tries to engage the audience, but class is a bit too large to be effective. She is very eager to help and an extremely nice lady, so she is very approachable for questions and help.
Dont take her if you dont have to! Shes a horrible grader. For a subject like com she makes it extremly harder then it needs to be. Test are hard askes stuff you would never think of. quizs you have 30 secs a question. Aviod if Possible takes public speaking to seriously
tests are very hard due to formatting. But she is not a mean lady she is eager to help. class size is too large
I attended every single class and read the textbook and somehow failed every test. Her quizzes on Bb are 30 secs a question and arent questions you can answer off the top of your head. I got an A in all my other classes this semester but an C in here other people I have talked to are in the same situation. She seems to want her students to fail.
Nice person, terrible professor. To begin with, if you email her a question, she's just going to tell you to read the syllabus. Like really? You can't just answer the question? She grades too hard for this to be a public speaking class, too. I guess she feels like everyone is trying to give a speech for the president or something.
EXTREMELY ambiguous test questions. Textbook had MULTIPLE CONTRADICTIONS. Had to memorize minutia in textbook so I couldn't spend time grasping main concepts of course. (minutia: city where speech given when it wasn't relevant to speaker or audience) Real disappointment because I wanted to learn speech concepts!
This teacher is horrible. Avoid taking her unless you like to memorize pointless concepts from the book that have nothing to do with the actual subject. She will not help you at all when you have a question about exams or concepts, just tells you to re-read. Also very rude when she responds to e-mails. I do not recommend her.
Probably one of the nicer ladies on campus. but she shouldn't be teaching this subject. Its all from the book and the tests are so hard. you practically have to memorize the chapters just to get a B on the test. Quizzes can be easy if you take your time. Not a bad class but you have to put serious effort into such an entry level course.
This class was taken online. I thought it would be easy to keep up with the tasks, but it didn't happen that way. She has a habit of thinking her class is the only one in existence. The tests are tricky and lengthy. My other grades are A/Bs. I would recommend taking someone else.
Taking this class online. I'm a senior. The amount of work is not demanding and the work itself is quite simple. Good communication. Assignments due every week, but nothing taking 16 hours while taking it, I couldn't handle.
Her tests are impossible, no study guides provided and books aren't allowed. Strict grader, will tell you that you are wrong but will not provide direction for you to find the right answer - just says figure it out!
It is impossible to get an A in this course, so if that is something that is important to you, find another section! She requires papers without providing an example of what she is looking for and won't tell you what she took points off for in the paper. Her quizzes are multiple choice and contain nitpicky questions and answer choices.
ONLINE: There has been a lot of negative going on about this class, but if you do the work and study you will get an A. I've easily gotten an A so far. It is just like any other online class; no lectures from teach and notes posted. It's not a hard class. Tests aren't even proctored. People that complain just don't know how to take online classes.
This class is not like other online courses. The absence of lecture notes or study guides is not the norm. The prof complains constantly about the number of students, making them feel like they are the problem rather than the purpose for the class existing. Requests for clarification are responded to with arrogance and defensiveness. Avoid!!
ONLINE: Exams are closed book closed notes and no lectures or study guides provided. Tests are difficult unless you know the text book word for word (And the required videos assigned). Students are not shown what answers were wrong. Uses her preferences when grading written assign. and not the syllabus guidelines. Avoid if you're used to an A.
You can get an A in this class, but you have kiss the prof's behind to get it. Just check your brain at the door, and do what you're told. Don't plan on learning anything useful, because the content - which could be very powerful - is just banal. Don't expect to understand her feedback. It's gibberish.
horrible! acts like she is too important to reply to an email so gets other people to. shes not clear at all on what she expects. its communication, the easiest, most pointless subject ever
Avoid this teacher, this class was terrible especially for an entry level class. Test are hard, she's really not that nice. memorize the book if you want an A. Just don't sign up for it (Drop it now if you have). DON'T DO THAT 2 YOURSELF!!
Terrible, tests are hard and pointless you can go to class memorize everything and still not know things on the tests
She is an incredibly nice woman. You take 5 tests, present 1 speech, and take a final Exam, no homework. The material is boring for any intro class, but if you want an A take her. She is also very willing to help.
Teacher was absolutely HORRIBLE! Please whatever you do don't take her. If you are signing up for classes take ANYBODY else. If you have her go ahead and drop it if you can. It is the worst class of your life. She does not respond to emails and she does not have any care for her students success in her class at all. All i can say is avoid her!
Course was harder than I thought. We covered the entire book, and all COMM theories (zzz). PPT presentations could use more explanations instead of just bullets. As is, they are more suited for brick-and-morter classes, not online. Exams and quizzes are hard, and often from material not covered in the books or PPTs. No study guides.
Speeches we graded extremely hard. I felt the grading in this course was more on an upper level rather than a 2000 level class. If you enjoy public speaking Dr. Hopkins is a great professor, but for those who are apprehensive about it I did not feel my grade reflected the effort I was putting forward.
As a person I think she is great. As a teacher she is horrible. Plan on being tested on videos she shows in class, any discussion in class, and also every line in the book is fair game. Dont even hope for a study guide. And when you get your test back you get 5 minutes to review it and she doesnt even tell you the right answers on the test.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had! No feedback as to why you got something wrong. No rhyme or reason for the way she grades. No study guide. Doesn't return emails.
For a communication class you would think she could communicate effectively with her students.
I don't think she wants her students to pass. Tests are WAY too difficult. I studied so much and still had a very hard time passing her class and making a good grade. Be prepared to study excessively if you have to take her, otherwise avoid her if you can.
She doesn't communicate effectively with her students. She doesn't make you feel that she is on your team and want you to succeed. She will ignore questions she doesn't feel like answering and confuse you on assignments and spoken agreements
Dr. Hopkins was very helpful whenever I had any questions. The tests are hard and the assignments take work, but if you pay attention and apply yourself you'll do just fine. Once you figure out what she is looking for it is a fairly easy class.
I almost didn't take her because of all the negative reviews on here, but I ended up having no choice. SHE DOES NOT DESERVE ALL THE NEGATIVITY. She was very helpful and willing. The course is challenging but in a good way.
Dr. Hopkins is a great professor. she genuinely cares about her students and their success. her lectures are filled with energy even on topics that are boring. its a lot of information and takes a lot of studying but she is always willing to help anyone who comes to her.
Took this class cause it was the only communication class that I didn't I have to make a speech. However this is the only way for extra credit. I was less then half point away from passing this class and asked her if I could do anything to raise my grade by 1 point and she told me no because I didn't do the extra credit. Wont be retaking with her.
Does not tell you what will be on the test but just says which chapters it will be. Unless you memorize the textbook word for word you won't do well on the exams. . The questions are meant to trick you. Your grade comes from only tests and one written assignment which she gives no explanation for what grade she gives. Powerpoints are not put online
Where GPA's go to DIE!!!!!! avoid at all cost you've been warned.
Completely impossible no study guides and grading scale is very strict for the amount of practice you are given. Makes you buy her book just to use the templates, I wonder why?????
We had: 5 quizzes(6%), 5 exams( Drops Lowest), 2 Speech Critiques(16%), 2 Speech Outlines(10%). Quizzes are easy, just have to watch the speeches. The exams require studying, and reading the chapters throughly. She grades tough on the critiques and outlines, so don't wait to the last minute (it'll show). Overall great teacher!
Dr. Hopkins was very difficult for me at first. I took her online class so I missed out on face to face clarification for things. Always read the chapter and her PowerPoints for the discussion boards and quizzes. She is very reasonable when grading your speeches and readily available to answer questions. If you are willing to work she'll help you.
Pretty easy class. Hardest part is finding 5 people to watch your speeches. Overall, she is nice and helpful. Ask questions if you have questions, she is always willing to help.
Dr. Hopkins is very caring about her students and will work with you if you communicate with her. I had several family issues during my time in her class and she worked around my issues and was very concerned. She does grade your speeches strictly, but overall it makes you a better public speaker. Her test are not difficult if you study the book.
I have had a few classes with her... they have all been super, super hard. Significantly harder than other professors in the school of communication. A TON more work outside of class than others. Makes you buy her book rather than posting the information on Blackboard which just feels wrong to me but go on and make that money I guess. avoid her.
Not a bad teacher and not a very hard class. Most of the assignments are weekly quiz's. Everything is open note or you can google it. 2 tests that are not to difficult as well. Just make sure you don't miss any quiz's or it hurts your grade BAD. Also when trying to get in touch with her through email she was not very responsive or helpful.
For an online class it's a lot. Tests aren't on quizlet. I have made A+ on every exam. I recommend creating a doc with definitions and textbook page numbers so you can find things easily during exam. Be very thorough with papers. Answer everything she asks WITH an explanation!
I asked many times to for more details on why I got points taken off... I never got answers. This professor is a very tough grader and will not give students the information they need to get better. Very disappointed. The class itself is not hard, but the professor makes it impossible to do well.
You will not pass this class if you don't get the textbook! She writes her own exams/quizzes but pulls them directly from the text, so don't count on Quizlet for this course. Most questions are T/F, and they're super easy. Be ready to write 2 critiques, 2 outlines, & a lot of discussion boards. No speech delivery, but she's a tough grader.
Terrible teacher. Her assignments are very vague and she gives no clear grading criteria. I asked her why I missed points and she never came back. I even got help from her for a paper and she still ended up giving me a C on the paper she helped me on. Tough grader with no guidelines. Pretty easy class but have to fight to get an A.
I have attended 3 universities and roughly have had about 40 different professors and out of all of my experiences I would say she is the absolute worst professor. Her comments are not very constructive or helpful. She takes points off without giving feedback as to why! Her instructions are unclear and she does not provide examples.
Professor Hopkins runs a tough grading system, but the coursework is manageable if you stay on top of the readings and assignments. The quizzes and exams require thorough understanding, so using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can be really helpful for study prep.
This class moved fast because it was an 8 week. I managed to get by without purchasing the textbook, if you are resourceful you don't need to buy it. Very tough grader, especially on discussion boards surprisingly. Exams were pretty easy, no lockdown. Speaker critique essay is very important. Upset I earned a 89.73 and grade was not rounded up.
