She is such a smart woman. Her lectures keep my focus and attention-but there is much work to do in this class!! I suggest to keep ahead; her itinerary is exact for the semester. She is a wonderful professor.
Shes a pretty good teacher! Although she does sign quite a bit homework.......but they are never hard just some readings and what not. Also gives extra credit chances. Definately reccommended she made history not so boring.
She assigns a lot of homework, but the class was pretty easy. She's a lot of fun, and she varies activities in class. She's an excellent professor.
Enjoyed the class, more homework than most but worth it--not overwhelming. No tests, just quizzes. Likes to have class discussions, encourages all opinions and is open to questions.
She is great, but tones of homework, readings and papers, by the end of the semester you are exhausted. No tests, but a lot of quizes which are not so easy.
Hot teaher. But thinks too highly of herself has an ego.
I took this course last year, but it was GREAT! I learned sooo much and was well prepared to go on to HIST 497. Prof. Pennock is AWESOME! She's a great discussion leader, very helpful, very available outside of class, and a really cool person!
Lots of quizes and readings, no real tests besides papers. I felt like walking out after quizes, as the lectures after would be pointless and never tested on. They'll also put you to sleep... its an alright class, but would not take a class again w/ her
smart woman, great teacher, very hard grader. I worked so hard on my papers, & did all my work but I always lost points. Its hard to get an A in her class. I wouldn't take a class w/her again unless I felt like busting my butt & don't want a social life
very very hard to get an A. i would advise u to stay away from this teacher. everything in the class was time consuming and strictly graded. its a class where everyone get's a B
Lots of work and seems aimed more toward the women in class, but is very hot and we excuse her for being an OSU girl
I thought the class would be really fun. I was wrong. a lot of homework. almost more than any other class i have taken. seems to think that this is the only class you have. she makes you feel stupid. she is also not very clear on most assignments. no matter how hard you work everybody gets a B.
Prof. Pennock was an excellent teacher. She was helpful and fair. It's not easy to get an A, but it's not impossible either. The class was interesting, I learned a lot.

She is a very good professor who expects you to work for your grade. I admit she is somewhat of a hard grader, but this is college..not high school anymore so be prepared!!
Reading assigned for every class, but only need to read what is assigned for homework or quizes. Everything else is worthless.. More interested in the study of history then the actual facts of the time. What you expect out of a 300 level class.. + no final
Lots of reading assignment!!!!! You need to read and read...!!! Very conceptual lecture!! You have to find the meaning by yourself. She required reading a non-fiction (300-400pages) for a paper. Don't take this class unless you want to major in history.
I have an internship with Pam. A wonderful mentor! She has given me tons of valuable career-related experiences! I've learned so much from her, and I know I'll be a better teacher someday myself because of it. Continually tries to make her classes better. She's very cool and a pleasure to work with!
There is a lot of reading to do in this class and homework about once a week but she makes stuff very easy to understand and doesn't press you to memorize unimportant names and dates. She is also veyr nice and helpful, so overall Pam is a good teacher.
She gives a LOT of reading. The class was difficult, but I actually learned something. I would steer clear unless you are a history major.
Lots of daily assignments, readings and written papers but definitely worth it. I learned a ton! She keeps you interested by varying the class and not always lecturing. She uses lots of resources to teach and is very approachable and understanding.
Very good! The first History class I actually enjoyed. She's passionate about what she teaches, makes learning interesting. A good helping of reading, but are usually interesting. Makes History feel more personal rather than an intangible something you onl
I am a sophomore who enrolled, without thinking in a 360 level class. I kinda freaked out at the initial load of reading, but it has slowed down. Lot of work needed to keep up in the class. But Prof. Pennock is extremely helpful and really has a passion for History. I really recommend this class for anyone is who wants to learn a lot.
Pamela was kind, knowledgeable, and had a good sense of humor. She chose interesting course materials, loved class discussions, and preferred written assignments/take homes to in-class exams. She was open to student suggested revisions, encouraged people to study things they were already intersted in, and graded fairly. I highly recommend her.
I LOVE HER! she has a great sense of humor and i LOVED this class and learned tons. i'm taking a class with her next semester just because i love the way she teaches. HIGHLY recommend taking ne thing she teaches.
Way too much reading. You have to also do a lot of writing. Don't take this class unless it's a must but even then try to find another prof. She grades unfair. You have to write a 6page term paper,a 4page mid-term and your final is 7pages. Good luck!!!!!!
She is a very well prepared professor - a breath of fresh air amont disorganization. It would help to agree with her opinions. She claims to value participation, but make sure you participate in a way that parrots back whatever she says. You can not participate, or talk about your personal life instead of the material and still get an A- in class.
Not a bad class overall. I hate history! She expects you to work and is a "so-so" grader. Lots of reading and writing, plus discussion time. She was a nice professor but not into getting off topic at all.
Definitely the worst Prof. i had. She had no idea about the 60s and she was teaching the class. It was the biggest waste of time, and she picks her favorites, so if you're not one of them you're screwed. avoid her, unless you are an idiot.
This class is horrible, utterly horrible. It takes up way too much of my time, as if I don't have any other classes or a job to worry about. She doesn't seem to care that her demands are unable to be met. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
The student who wrote the last rating needs to get a grip. This is college and the U of M no less. If you don't want to work then go somewhere else. Pennock is great!
I learned so much in her class. She's smart and works hard and cares, and she makes her students work hard too. She's definitely one of the best profs I've had. She knows her stuff. I liked the readings. You definitely have to be ready to read & write in her class. It's challenging but worth it.
I loved her class! she is a very smart and knowledgable professor. her lectures are interesting and she gets really into it. literally knows it all. Actually, I am now a history major because of her class, you will learn a lot and it's not as boring as it seems!! picky grader on midterm and final paper.. other than that, she's great!
alot of homework and reading...but an interesting prof....and I learned alot
alot of reading assignments are given!
Professor Pennock is one of the best Professors at UMD. I believe this class should be mandatory because of the Civil Rights discussions. I highly recommend her to all students.
The person before me needs to calm down. She is a GREAT professor and an A is possible if you TRY. She doesn't hand out A's, but if you go to her for help, she goes out of her way to make sure you get the best grade possible. I recommend this professor, she truly cares about the succes of her students!
Great teacher! She is very approachable and willing to help students if they ask for it. Professsor Pennock wants her students to succeed. Don't think you'll breeze through an get an "A" because you won't, but if you work hard and EARN it she will be happy to give it to you. I highly recommend taking Professor Pennock! (and she's funny)
I got a B in the class, it was a hard earned B that's for sure. A lot of reading, you can get away with not doing it during the semester but it will come back to bite you for the exams. As long as you read everything she gives and participate in class you should be fine. All essay Mid-term and Final which kind of sucked.
Very helpful, interesting. Makes the class easy, if you attend class.
THIS PROFESSOR GET TWO THUMBS DOWN! IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE HER (I.E. SHE'S THE ONLY ONE TEACHING HIST.300) THEN BRACE YOURSELF FOR 3 HOURS OF 1950'S CULTURE TAUGHT FROM ONE NARROW PERSPECTIVE. YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY, SHE DOES PICK HER FAVORITES.
Avoid this professor. Too many uninteresting assignments, too much reading, too many writing assignments. Don't be fooled by all the good reviews, she is a very hard grader and was only nice before she got tenure. EGOTISTICAL. She will show anger if you walk in even a minute late to her class and remains in the class during course evaluations
she acts like this is the only class that you have.u have 10 reading assignments a day there is always a writing to be done usually at least 3 pages in length. she chooses favorites and if you're not one of them your screwed. Avoid taking her. she doesn't give an objectionable point of view on history she tells her point and that's it, very skewed
Dr. Pennock has high standards for her students and grades accordingly (As any Michigan professor should). She is a fantastic teacher and is willing to work with students to make sure they understand the material. Her class is not by any means easy, but I would recommend her to any serious students who expects an education with their degree!
Professor Pennock is a very high standards professor. Her teaching is very good; but if your not a diligent worker, avoid her. Her expectations are high and you get out of it what you put in.
I really enjoyed this class with PP. Definitely one of my favorite classes. Midterm was two essay questions, which were known in advance. Final exam was a discussion. Avg reading load. Significant writing with journal assignments. No memorization required; notes allowed on midterm. Presentation only 5% grade. Extra credit opps. Overall EXCELLENT!
Dr. Pennock is the most amazing professor I have ever had. She's smart and beautiful and expects a lot of her students but only because she cares and wants for us to learn about history and its significance. If ur looking for an easy A, this isn't the class for you. If you're looking to learn critical thinking and analysis TAKE A CLASS WITH PENNOCK
she's an awesome professor but not easy by ANY means. not a ton of homework but if you don't keep up with the required readings u'll be screwed when something does come up. don't be late cause she'll automatically hate you. if you talk while she's lecturing she'll call u out. do your work and pay attention and you'll get through her class alright
Had her for two classes and I can say that she is hard but fair. Overall she is a cool(For a Buckeye) person who really likes her job and loves the subject matter. She has this mentality that is basically no crap from anyone which I like personally. Overall she is a fantastic teacher and I would recommend you take her if you can work.
Dr. Pennock is my favorite teacher! She made her class interesting and enjoyable, even for non-history majors. She is very clear about what she expects from students and is a fair grader. If you keep up with the reading assignments (she gives them as homework almost every class) you will do well.
Excellent. She's very passionate about the subject. DO NOT MISS CLASS and make sure you READ!! There is a lot of reading, but if you don't want to read then you probably shouldn't be going to UMD. Will definitely take an upper level class with her. NOT a blow off, so don't think you can walk in, slack, and get a good grade.
You will learn a lot, but it must take a miracle to earn an A. I usually get all A's and got a B in this class after working my tail off all semester. The tests are mostly essay and the class workload is heavy. Going into this class I was dreading taking history & I actually ended up liking it in the end.
fantastic! smart & passionate about history. great class discussions, movies and some lectures. lots of reading and writing, but if you're good at those two things, adding your own ideas, and you go to class you'll be fine. Some say she's a tough grader, but I think she just expects upper level UofM quality work.
Not a fan.
This teacher expects you to kiss her feet. The workload is intense. She knows he stuff, but will inflict her opinion of topics as the only correct option. Take a different class.
Make sure you suck up the first day, dont let life throw you a curve ball and accidentally arrive late, and oh, ONLY take her class because the workload comparable to taking three classes. EGOTISTICAL, CADDY, OVERBEARINGLY OPINIONATED. DO NOT TAKE
Pennock is a nice and funny professor, but the workload is excessive for a one-hundred level course. She has extremely high expectations and takes attendance everyday. Her exams are pretty much all essays and are very time consuming to study for. Also, the pop quizzes are annoying.
If you dont have time to read half a novel a week for JUST the weekly homework, steer clear.
I LOVE HER!!!! Best history teacher by far!! She really knows her stuff and is passionate about history, especially the 1960's era. I learned so much in her class. She is an amaaazing teacher! Don't get me wrong, the workload is INTENSE, but all interesting and relevant to the course! I will definitely take her again..AWESOME professor!!
I learned more in this class than in any other. And I enjoyed the material and the presentation so much I took her class again. It's not easy, but she makes it seem easier because it's interesting and she gives you everything you need to do well.
Very un-helpful with questions. Was not one to approach with a problem. Would not recommend as a teacher, stay away of possible.
Dr. Pennock is one of my favorite professors. I don't know what people are complaining about. The reading load is heavy at times, but it's history so what do you expect? I took this class because I heard great things about her and wanted something that would teach me to critical think. Shes' a super fair grader and an A is VERY doable.
Be prepared to read read read. For a 112 level course her expectations were way to high. She is abrasive when you give an opinion and very unapproachable. Would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE!For a 100 level class the work was very difficult. It was insane the amount of reading involved. As a freshman, it left me very discouraged.
it was hard somewhat. i was surprised on my grade on the test and paper, but we got to meet a real life author so that was cool. she is nice. But sometimes her lectures were not always interesting. must take notes. they are super important when it comes time for the test.
Workload is crazy. She gives you a book to read along with the textbook and a ton of other stuff. Paper topics are somewhat vague. She let's the stuck up people who think they know everything make comments but I made one comment and she got pissed at me. So to tell the truth I would not recommend the class if history isn't your major.
She is a good teacher, and the lectures were usually interesting. However, there is a lot of reading involved, especially for a 100 level class. Doable if you read and study.
The class is alot of work and she is not an easy grader, but she gives you what you deserve when you work hard. She was really nice and I like her sarcastic humor. Also, very passionate and wants you to learn. Very approachable. I want to take more classes she teaches. I learned a lot and found her lectures interesting, didn't really ever need book.
Really, really, REALLY thorough. She puts a lot of effort into what she does, and expects the same from her students. Lots of work, but she definitely keeps the sources and assignments interesting. The toughest professor you'll ever love.
Excellent professor! Teaches history properly: rather than teaching names/dates, teaches how to present a historical argument & support it with primary sources. Gives a reasonable amount of work for a 300 level class. Loves class discussion and is very approachable. One of those prof you have to take before you graduate, regardless of your major.
She's a good professor, but good luck if you're not as interested and enthusiastic about the course as she is
Professor Pennock is an excellent professional. She took over for our class and did an amazing job. You will have to work hard, but you will get the grade you earn. She made class fun and interesting with witty comments. She wants you to critically thinking about the material, rather than memorizing details. That's how it should be, take her class.
Professor Pennock's 1960s history class changed my life. Being a freshman and in my first semester of college, taking this class was one of the best things I could have done. She helps you realize the comparisons between the movements of the 60s to movements we can see today. She makes you passionate towards the era. I couldn't recommend her more!!
Prof. Pennock is an amazing instructor. She is insightful and extremely knowledgeable. Her grading is fair, there really isn't a "right answer" for essays or the midterm/final exam essay questions, just provide enough support for your answer along with good reasoning. SHE WANTS YOU TO USE YOUR BRIAN AND FORM YOUR OWN ANALYSIS!
She is an amazing teacher and extremely organized. Welcomes discussion at all times. Her grading was okay, there were several times where I lost points without an explanation which is frustrating. You have to participate, and do not skip. She will give pop quizzes to make sure you are doing the reading. I loved the class, but you will work hard.
If you have other responsibilities/classes, don't take her. Beware of pop quizzes. A couple EC opportunities. We were expected to read 3-4 sources in prep for EVERY class on top of what was due for that class. I had 13 credits and a part time-20 hr/week job. It was certainly a lot with how much work was required. She has passion, just tons of work.
Overall Professor Pennock is okay at best. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about her job, she is also very helpful. On the downside she treats her classes like its the only thing her students have to do. Usually there is at least 1 paper due almost every week, to go along with heavy reading assignments. So if you are a busy person dont tak
Prof. Pennock was nice and cool. Her lectures were clear, and I liked that she posted her powerpoints online. She let us bring notes into the exams. She graded everything really fast and responded to my emails really fast. I had a personal issue at the end of the semester and she let me turn in the paper late without penalty.
This class really wasn't what I expected to be, but I learned a lot in the class. Prof. Pennock really cares about students learning and has high expectations.
STAY AWAY!!!!
Professor Pennock is a gem. She cares about her students inside and out of the classroom. She gives great feedback on proposals and rough drafts. No exams, but very rigorous projects! DO NOT SKIP CLASS. I skipped once and my grade dropped from a 96 to an 81. But she is very understanding and once I explained the situation to her she excused me!
If you put in the time and effort -- And communicate! Don't avoid emailing your professors! -- she will do everything she can to ensure your success. I found her classes challenging and very interesting. She pushes me to be a better student which is important. I picked her two classes this semester based solely on her being the instructor.
Shes a wonderful professor who cares about how her students do. There is a lot of reading and the quizzes can be tricky. HOWEVER, shes more than willing to help and gives you extra materials like reading guides to help you which I really appreciated. I loved her class and how she taught it. She keeps it interesting and shows she really does care.
Professor Pennock is super nice and provides great feedback. Honestly if you put effort into the class you'll be fine. There is a decent amount of work throughout the weeks but it's nothing really intense. She really cares for her students and will help you out if you reach out to her. She provided great feedback on the work turned in. Very nice.
Prof. Pennock is a very tough grader. Lots of hw and bigger assignments. There were 3 papers + a digital project where you have to make a website. Be ready to read and have a tough grader because she takes lots of points off for nothing.
There will be almost weekly homework assignments, but most will not take more than an hour to complete. Dr. Pennock is a fair grader who very obviously cares about making her classes engaging for her students and giving the best feedback possible. After two classes with her, I would not hesitate to take a third if the opportunity arose.
