Stay away...her tests are hard regardless of whether or not you have had calculus before. I think a TA does a much better job
She is a very strict lady and doesn't put up with crap but a very good professor. Gotta do your work and pay attention if you want to pass.
Extremely difficult, the only tests I passed were by a very little amount.
Tests are incredibly difficult. I took AP Calc and got a 5 on the exam but I'm retaking it for med school and I got a 64 on her first test. But if you do halfway decent on some of the tests- don't drop because she gives extra credit and a HUGE curve.
Granted, she is not the easiest professor in the math department, but do the homework, go to her office hours, and actually go to class and you'll do fine. She'll make sure you know the material.
As long as you keep up with the (optional) homework, and pay attention in class, you should be fine. Her tests are hard, but she always gives extra credit and a big curve. I really liked her, but I think I would have been lost if I didn't have calc in HS
The tests are very difficult, but that doesn't change the fact that she doesn't do a good job of teaching. Office hours, graduate tutoring, etc. are encouraged, even if you've already taken calculus.

I wish she'd teach the 170 series so that I could have had her again. She still says hi to me in the hallway after 2 years! I learned so much key calculus from her. Take her, especially if you'll use math in your major classes. Super helpful!
Stay away. Her tests are difficult and she can make rude comments to the students as mentioned before. And another thing is she makes no effort to help her students outside of class.

Great if you keep up. Hard if you don't.
Great teacher, makes class fun, very fair.
Very helpful. Very fair - treats everyone the same and grades everyone the same. One of the best.
Do not take calc with ****g. I took it in high school and I still got a bad grade because she tries to fool you on the tests.
Class is ok for a math class. Prof tries to make it fun. She is very helpful outside class and the review sessions for tests are very helpful.
The material covered is difficult, but she does her best to make sure you get it. Very helpful in office hours, as well as in class. One of the better teachers in the math department.
Absolutely the greatest. She's hard but she really cares. She tries to make class fun. Has very flexible ofice hours.
Made disparaging remarks about my math skills every time I went in for extra help. Considering the fact that I was there because I didn't understand the material and was making an effort to succeed it was completely uncalled for. Not a nice woman.
Fair, helpful and kind. I'm not good in math but I made a B. She has office hours and gives reviews for each tesst.
I have to admit she's really nice and cordial outside of the classroom, but I absolutely hated her class. I can't stand her as a professor.
She is hard and goes fast. make sure you don't ****her off because she isn't very nice if she knows you don't try. her quizzes are easy though.
She's hard, very hard, but go see her and get to know her, it will really show up on your grade. Keep up with homework and always do it, she unexpectedly takes it up a lot.
Miserable. Very hard.
Very nice lady, terrible class
Need to listen very carefully to what she is saying. It is up to the student to do homework. If you had a hard high school calculus teacher, then this class may be easy.
Helpful and nice person. She's definitely harder than most of the other 150b teachers, but her class is manageable. Make sure to do hw and attend class, she gives extra credit based on this. Tests are rather intense.
Went way too fast, very hard tests. Nice lady.
A hard class, but she does offer extra credit and is extremely helpful about scheduling help sessions. She moves quickly in class, so unless you are good at independent study this isn't the class for you. She is very sweet unless she thinks you aren't doing your part, in which case watch out!
She's cool and very helpful. Math usually sucks but she tries to make it as clear as possible and helps you out on your grades as much as possible.
Nice lady and tries to make class fun. She expects you to do your homework.
boring
Extremely unhelpful, very difficult.
She is a very good teacher, straight and to the point. Her tests are very hard but it made the departmental final so much easier. Her classes usually do the best on the final which means they get curved up the most. Pay attention, do the problems and your golden.
That class is no joke, but she tries to help as much as possible. Her exams are really hard, but then the Final seems slightly easier.
It is possible to make an A here if you work extremely hard, go to office hours, and show up to class. Extremely nice woman who can create quite possibly the hardest tests ever. The benefit is the final is easy in comparison. I finished in 1.5 hrs when we were given 2.5 by the department!
I took her for two semesters. Her tests are over the notes and homework. Write everything that she writes on the board. I cannot stress that enough. An A is hard to get. However, a B- is average.
She has clear notes during each class but is unwilling to help outside of class and her tests are impossible and much harder than other sections.
She makes this course much more difficult than it needed to be. Her tests were near impossible.
Made a hard calss interesting and as enjoyable as possible. Always available for help. Seems to really enjoy teaching.
Very good teacher who explains everything thouroughly. I really disliked math before but because of her clear instruction (and my good grade on the final) I am now really excited about math. Warning: Be prepared to work hard for your grade.
She tries to be really nice and helpful but it feels like she is talking down to you the whole time. Also she expects you to do the homework before she teaches the lecture, which is not much help. I personally did not like her at all, but if you get on her good side, she can be a favorite I guess if you work.
She is a great great teacher. I had a horrible teacher for calculus and she has made the material very clear to unserstand. I highly recommend taking her if you can. The tests are next to impossible but it helps in the end on the final
Although she is good at teaching, her class is miserable. I can honestly say it is the worst I have ever taken. She has a theory that she will prepare you for the final, which is true, but in the process you are given very unfair tests which give you little to no chance to demonstrate competency. Take another teacher or don't take calc.
Very good teacher. Very helpful. Test are difficult but stay with it. She will prepare you for the final.
She is probably the best professor I had during my whole time at Vandy. Her explanations are clear and she's very willing to explain anything, even if you no longer have her as a prof. Yes, the course does require a lot of work, but it's calculus what do you expect?
She is the best math professor at Vandy. She provides clear explanations and tries to make sure that the entire class understands the concepts. the class is tough, but if you stay on task you will do well. She's very easy to talk to and she has multiple office hours.
One of the best professors at Vandy. Hard, but very clear in class and helpful during office hours. Get on her good side.
She is horrible. As a fellow Mississippian, I am ashamed to be from the same state as her. She is nasty towards guys, very unhelpful, and moves way too quickly. Her tests are ridiculous and unfair. She makes anyone who has a question in class feel like they are an idiot and that they are an inconvience to her. Worst class ever. never take her
Great teacher - she really works hard to make sure we understand. Very encouraging and has lots of office hours. Do your homework and ask questions and you'll do fine. I also know she's from Tennessee.
Simply put--the best professor I've ever had. I've specifically tried to get her for every math class I have. It's my 3rd semester with her... wouldn't trade her for another teacher. Her tests are easily manageable if you do ALL the homework that's assigned. They're long though, so make sure you know your stuff! Most caring professor I've met!
Great Professor! Very helpful and encouraging. Test are not too bad if you do all your work and study and I do mean do your homework. She has lots of office hours and review sessions before each test.
GREAT TEACHEER. DO THE HOMEWORK AND YOU'LL BE OK - BUT YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE. VERY HELPFUL OUTSIDE OF CLASS. HAS REVIEWS BEFORE EACH TEST.
Shes the nicest professor I ever met, along with one of the hardest. If you work hard, she'll work hard with you. Always there when you need help. Helped me like math. She also reminded my of my grandma so thats a plus
Ms. Pigg is a very swift person. She goes over 30 pages of your textbook in one lesson. Please do noe take her, you will fail.
She is one of the worst professors to take if you are a guy. She moves way too fast and her test are unfairly hard. She says that she makes all the tests hard so that we are not suprised when the final comes. Thanks alot ****! I really enjoyed getting C's all semester. She made me feel like a huge idiot. I am embarassed that she is also from MS.
Pamela Pigg is a great teacher. She always makessure you understand the material before you move on and she is readily available to reach outside of class. I took 150B from her twice (so I could replace my first****ty grade). She is tough on her quizzes and tests but all of her students do the best on the final and end up with the best grades.
i thought that taking a math professor who spoke english would make it easier for me, but her quizzes and tests are TOO hard. even though she makes the final exam, i'd rather have an A, take the exam, and finish with a C/B, than have an F and still not do well enough of the final exam to raise the grade. Avoid Pigg, TAKE HUTCHINSON!!
Ok, she may be tough, but she really is the best professor to take for this class. I'm pretty sure she's the head of the dept. and prepares you very well for the final. Her class always gets the highest grades on the tests. Take her.
Mrs. Pigg is without a doubt my favorite math professor at Vandy so far. Her teaching style is very clear and she's unbelievably patient with those who have questions. She tells you far in advance that her tests will be hard, but as long as you keep up with the homework assignments and actually understand the material, you'll do fine.
go to class and take notes...do the homework...get an A
Prof. Hutchison is an incredible teacher, one of the best I had freshman year. If you must take calc. make sure you take it with her!!! Her class average is consistently better than the departmental average and it's definately not better students, she's just that good of a teacher.
She's been around and definitely knows how to prepare her students. She's always around for study sessions and really helps her students.
Very clear explanations, does a good job explaining everything. Available for help and offers reveiws prior to tests. Kind and encouraging.
Watch out! The kids in my class who were naturally great at math did fine - but if you're one of those who needs a teacher who can explain the material, then Pigg is not for you. The tests are impossible, as are the quizzes.
Class was slightly difficult but, second semester calc is going to be. Pigg is very helpful and wants everyone to do well. Goes out of her way to give review sessions and help students. overall decent class great teacher
Ms. Pigg is definitely the best 150a teacher at vanderbilt. if you have to take 150a then take it with her. The class is impossible but she is as helpful as a professor possibly could be in this impossible class!
dont listen to all of the comments that say "the tests are hard". ITS NOT HER FAULT people! math 150 A and B have departmentalized tests, so it's not pigg's fault. She is an incredible profesor, really explains everything well and is helpful and friendly. if you can take it from her. she is the best math professor you could get.
Good teacher. Just be prepared to have her teach the class with a tone suited for first graders. "Am I right? Come on! Am I right?"
Absolutely the greatest. Very clear presentation, really knows her stuff. Tests are challenging but if you do your homework you'll be ok.
I think she represents the material in an easy way. She got her awesome hand-outs. She is nice. However, her tests are not easy. You need to be WELL-PREPARED for them. Her tests are pretty long and got some degree of difficutly.
good professor, but tests are challenging and you really have to know your calculus to do well.
This one's a tough cookie.
While her handouts are good, she is an impossible teacher and her tests are even more impossible. Unless you want are willing to let all of your other grades slide to put all of your work into calculus DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
One of the best math profs I've ever had. I will say that while 150B loved her, 155B hated her. Handouts are very helpful; she does go a little fast in class, so make sure to keep up. Always willing to help outside of class. Take her if you get the chance, you won't regret it.
Terrible teacher. Goes extremely fast in class, although it makes sense when she does it on the board, it gets a lot harder when you try and do it alone. Her tests are near impossible, although there is always one kid who gets a 95, they mostly likely should have been placed in a higher class. EXTREMELY hard grader, very picky. STUDY, and avoid.
Hardest/worst teacher ever. Just writes examples on board, too fast to follow, and then makes you basically teach yourself. Impossible to get an A, unlike the other sections, where A's are common. Math was my best subject in high school. I will never take another math class because of her.
She's by far the toughest teacher up to date. Not only does she make everything way too complicated for it's own good, she also makes her section extremely difficult compared to the other 155b sections. Do not take her if you want to get an A. I have heard that 150b students like her though. Her handouts are nice since you teach yourself.
Fantastic calculus professor. Although 155 kids seem to not like her, she is great for 150. Clear explanations with good handouts and her humor keeps the class interesting. The class moves a little fast so make sure you keep up with homework and lessons and you should be fine! Make sure you get her for 150.
Great teacher. I found her handouts very helpful. She was available for help during her office hours. Our class was expected to learn. The other sections got curved and group work. If you want to actually learn the subject, she great. If you expect to have the grade given to you take someone else.
Prof Pigg is the least helpful math prof you could possibly find at this school. If someone asks a question she may either respond by looking at you like you're suffering from Downs or tell you that you should already have learned it. If it wasn't for the TA I probably would've failed this course.
prof pigg is the best. i took her math 150A course as a freshman without having taken calculus or even precalc in high school. go to class every day. do the homework. she is a great teacher and explains everything clearly - i did better on the department tests than my friends who had gotten 4's on the AP. if you have to take the class, take pigg.
Avoid if you are in math 155. her tests are rediculous and most students ended up spending more time on this class than all their others combined. Supposedly she is not that bad for 150
Great prof, great handout, explanations very clear. I found her very helpful but I really worked hard. I had not taken calculuc in high school so i had to study. I recommend her if you want to understand what your doing
Calc 150B is normally a hard class because it is a weed out class. However, if you have to take this math class, Prof. Pigg is the ONLY professor you should take it from. Her quizzes are pretty difficult, but if you go to class and to the recommended problems, you will be fine. Her classes averages are consistently higher than any other class.
Great teacher, great handouts, tough tests. She assumes you know your first semester stuff and goes on. Sticks to the schedule and knows her stuff. Very helpful if yu have questions.
Prof. Pigg was extremely helpful, I was only auditing her class but she still allowed me to come to her for office hours and made things very clear. She's strict, but she wants to prepare you for going into calculus. She also has very informative handouts. Take notes and do the homework and you'll be fine.
I took this class first semester and failed miserably. Our first test average was a 46. I'm retaking it with another teacher this semester and have a 94. Her tests were ridiculously long and much more in depth than other sections. Take her if you want to be a math major. If not, go to another section.
Absolutely the best handouts, great teacher but strict. If you want an easy grade don't take this class.
she s a nice teacher. although sometimes she expects you to be ready for accelerated learning. but it is an accelerated class. so review before class unless you take calc before. she grades hard on test n half of the class may fail. but she drops the worst grade n give ten credits more for overall if you do test corrections. so she s good though.
Pigg is an AMAZING TEACHER. She breaks things down to where anyone can understand her. UNFORTUNATELY, this is where the good things end. She makes her test and quizzes too long for the time she gives. She's the only 133 teacher, so be prepared to get a grade much lower than you expect. Half my class dropped or is retaking it. She has no sympathy.
She makes things simple and easy to understand. She takes attendance most days so you should go to class but she won't waste your time. She gives amazing handouts to follow along in lectures. She doesn't take up homework. Her tests are hard and I had to rush through them to finish in time. Overall she's great if you identify with her teaching style
Pamela Pigg is an example of the profligate teaching practices that leave America devoid of math enthusiasts. The useless woman doesn't even have a Ph.D. She is insuffrable in her use of the expression "Did I boo-boo?" She will single-handedly kill my GPA and raise my blood pressure. That being said, she is pleasant enough as a conversationalist.
Dont let her kind grandmotherly ways fool u. Her test are hard. But she's a pretty good teacher. I did not really learn new in this class due to APcal. But the tests are difficult. Also be careful in making sure you don't make silly errors on the test in showing work. Even taking off for missing parenthesis in work shown when the answer is right.
I dropped her class after a week because her test were impossible, she was an awful teacher and just a generally unhappy person. She still holds it against me every time she sees me she makes an offhand comment in the hallway.
She's great, has great handouts, and is very helpful out of class. Her test are long and thorough. The first test is not until about the third week of class, I don't know what the previous person is talking about. She tough but fair. Those who try to cry their way to a better grade get treated the same as everyone else.
Amazing teacher! She can go very fast, but she is clear and easy to understand. She truly wants every student to do well. There is a high time commitment for any calc, but do all the homework and you will be fine. If needed, go to office hours. Also, this semester she had the highest grades out of all other 155B professors. B averages on tests!
A terrible woman. I'm not trying to sound ****, but she should be teaching at the highschool level. Memorize stuff and you'll do fine. Ask why you should memorize it and she just ignores you. I would not recommend this teacher. Plus the test had nothing to do with the hours I spent on homework. I feel like I was cheated.
Great prof! She is so nice and really concerned about her students progress. Her handouts are terrific and her lecture is so clear- she makes is sound so easy. I went to her office for help and the help session before each test. I totally recommend her.
Good class as far as calculus classes go. Pigg actually seems to like teaching and like calculus. Required a lot of work. Tests were long and hard but I studied and got an A. Do the homework and go to review sessions and youll be ok
She was my favorite prof last semester. I went to office hours and review sessions. She was very helpful and explained things really well. Her handouts were the best. The tests were difficult but I managed to get an A
Professor Pigg is pretty funny and her handouts are very helpful, but the tests were pretty hard. She cares so much about her students though, that she let us replace our lowest test grade with the final exam.
I had not taken a calc class prior to 155a, and got a C+. The fact that I was proud of this grade shows the level of difficulty she brings to the course. She teaches at a quick pace and has a fondness for hard problems, so you have to have a mastery of calc to receive an A from her. But because of this rigor, I have come out with a strong calc base
I had her last semester and I wish she taught this semester. She's tough but I could understand her and her handouts were the greatest. Miss you Mrs. Pigg!
The only distraction I experienced during this class was her hotness.
Not a bad teacher, but the tests are far too long. Did not finish any test. Having a question contain 10 complex parts and take up a whole page, and to cram it in as one question on an 8 page, 14 quest test is ludicrous. If you can't do math at her speed, avoid her at all costs. Your grade will not be indicative of your level of understanding.
Good teacher, explains concepts well, has great handouts and is very helpful during office hours but the tests long and thorough. You will need to do all the homework and study hard to do well in this class. An A is very difficult to get. She expects a lot but you learn a lot.
Great teacher, very helpful, and explains everything well. Her quizzes are hard, but get you ready for the standardized tests. One of the best math teachers I've ever had and tries to make the class interesting.
Great teacher. I like math so I was willing to put in the work, but she is pretty tough. Very helpful if you go to her outside of class. Tests are long, but if you learn to move quickly, they're fine.
She was the worst teacher that I've had at Vanderbilt. She refused to discuss questions that I had about course material and questions that I about tests (after she had graded/returned them). She took off points on a test when I did not put a "2" superscript on a square root sign (yeah, that happened) and then refused to discuss it. DONT TAKE HER!!
She is absolutely the best teacher I have. She very concerned that all her students do good. The test are long and thhorough but if you do your homework and go to her office hours for help it's ok. She is very kind and willing to help. Her handouts are great.
Professor Pigg is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Math 133 is EXTREMELY difficult (I can barely add/subtract without a calculator) but she was there to help me through. The tests are hard but if you do the homework and meet with her during office hours you'll do fine.
She is the best professor I have ever had at Vanderbilt. This class is hard because it is so standardized, but she makes it okay. He classes always do far better than the other classes in terms of average on tests, and she's extremely helpful and wants her students to succeed. Avoid all other 150 professors and take her.
good teacher, handouts are helpful (must go to class!!). tests are hard- not nearly enough time and graded extremely nit-picky. would retake this class with another professor if possible.
great teacher, handouts are very helpful. very helpful during office hours. if you have to take the standardized calculus try to get her.
She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Her lectures are clear and she gives out concise handouts for each (very helpful!). Draconian department standards get in the way of everything though. People who previously enjoyed math begin to dislike it because of ridiculous time restraints placed on tests.
Pigg is a great teacher and teaches the material clearly. However, the homework isn't necessarily helpful for tests, and even if you feel like you know the material, the tests usually include some ridiculously hard problems. Also, don't try to negotiate scores with Pigg, she can be pretty sassy and ruthless.
Pigg is great! Calculus 150B at Vandy is the worst, but she does the best she can with the ridiculous department rules. She gives great handouts but this class isn't one you can skip a lot. She wants students to do well and is very clear with material in class. Definitely go to office hours, she is intimidating 1:1 at first, but will warm up to you
Probably the best math teacher I have ever had. Very fair and helpful. Tests are long and thorough. Gives great handouts and explains calculus where you can understand it. I owuld definitely recommend her.
Love her! She is very helpful. The quizzes are hard, so be sure to study for them. However, they really help you prepare for the tests. Go to office hours for help. Study and do the homeowrk and you should do fine.
She is such a nice professor. She helped a lot if you don't understand. Spend time to go to her Office Hour and she'll surely helped you.
Even though you may not want to, do the homework. Reinforcement is necessary since the lectures are often fast paced and difficult to follow (beware if you haven't taken calculus in high school). That being said Professor Pigg is probably the best possible choice. She's really nice, but the tests are, of course, really tough.
Best teacher for Math 150 by far, our class scored better than all of the others. You do need to attend class, and it's helpful if you keep up, but otherwise it's all quizzes and tests. She wants you to do well.
I absolutely loved Professor Pigg as a teacher. She is an unbelievable professor who truly cares about her students and their success. She will work to explain key concepts to you until you understand, and she is always willing to meet outside of class as well. She made me actually enjoy calculus class.
Take this prof for 150/155. Period. Don't chance it with anyone else. She is a charming southern woman with a simply hilarious sense of humor and an even greater prowess concerning mathematics. Super, Super helpful. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, she WILL help you. The class is hard not because of Prof. Pigg, but because of departmental restrictions...
She helpful, funny, nice and caring- enough said.
This was my second time to take this class. Wish she had taught it the first time. Explains things so well. Makes class enjoyable. Great prof.
Her lectures, while quick, are clear and problem-focused. She definitely cares
Way too hard
Really difficult class, and I took BC in HS (and got a 4!). Quizzes are either really easy or really hard, and most of your grade is made up by the 5 tests (which are also hit or miss). Be prepared to fail at first. She is marginally helpful during office hours, but prepare to do a lot of learning on your own. Not an easy A by any measure!
Took this class, advertised as precalculus math, because I wanted a good background for a real calc class. It was geared towards the international engineering students, who made up 95% of the class and were taking upper level calculus. Prof taught this class like everyone should have already known the material and didn't even follow the book.
Love this professor. She is funny, caring, and a great teacher. Really cares about her students and their success. She is willing to help outside of class , especially when preparing for tests. Would definitely take her again.
Really cares about her students and is very helpful. Classes are very problem driven so you get practices and she keeps class entertaining. Tests are difficult but doable if you do all the homework she assigns.
She is kind and very helpful. Study her class notes and you won't even need the text book. If you are thorough with the questions she does in class, you can easily make a good grade. Our section had the highest averages even though the tests are standardized. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Take her if you want a good grade in calculus.
she's so funny and i love her southern accents! her extra credit assignment was not hard at all, just correction on exam papers and oh, no homework too! i love her she's so cute hahaaha
This class is hard no matter who you take it with. You may know the concepts but you'll mess up if you don't pay attention to detail. There's a lot of wiggle room for your grade though. She drops 2/12 quizzes and averages your final with your lowest test grade. Test averages are in the 70's. If you have to to take this class, take it with Pigg!!
Prof Pigg's class is tough but fair. She doesn't take up homework but it's a good idea to do it anyways. She wants all her students to understand what's going on. She goes a little fast sometimes but she asks for questions. Go to office hours if you need help.
Avoid Calc 1200 if you already have credit for the class. I did well in AP and expected this class to be easy. I was wrong. This is the hardest class I have taken at Vanderbilt. Only B. Although the actual content was easier than math and physics courses I took in high school, the grading is so meticulous that it makes it very difficult to succeed.
She's a good teacher. Classes are very fast paced. She gets annoyed when you ask questions in class. Office hours are very helpful. Do EVERY homework problem and use the supplement before the tests. They are very harshly graded. If you can skip using credit from high school, please do.I took Calc 1200 and am currently doing poorly in the class.
Class is fast paced but Pigg stops often for questions. She tries to make class entertaining. She's a tough grader If you study handouts and do homework you should do ok. Go to office hours, she's a great help there. She's hard but she's fair. I would take her again, if I had to take another math class. Don't skip class.
This is my second time taking Pigg, and I'd say the second semester is definitely easier than the first semester. Still a lot of room to bump up your grade through recitation and test corrections. Her handouts are a godsend and she's always there to help you. Overall, not impossible, but not easy by any means.
Pigg is an amazing professor. She clearly wants her students to succeed, but Calc is a course that requires a lot of personal effort. Quizzes and tests are very detail oriented. Making little mistakes adds up and can be frustrating. Do the homework, it really helps. Go to office hours.
Hardest class I ever took. Pop quizzes, which are normally grade boosters, were really hard. Tests were near impossible. Partial credit is more of a curse than a blessing because points are taken off left and right. This is more a reflection of the difficulty of the course than Professor Pigg. She's very nice, but the class is just too tough.
Great professor. She really cares about her students and their success. She is willing to help outside of class , especially when preparing for tests. Her handouts are very helpful. Do the homework and go to office hours if you need help.
She goes really fast and won't own up to her mistakes. Also, you get a lot of points off if you do your work differently than her, even by a margin and even if you get the correct answer.
Professor Pigg's class is not extremely easy. She offers so much extra credit including three extra credit quizzes and she averages your lowest test grade with your final if you want her to. She also lets you drop two quiz grades. For sure take her for an easy A or B.
I took AP Calc AB in HS so I figured this class would be a breeze - WRONG! Prof. Pigg gives you all the material you need to succeed (review packets & office hours) but this class requires a lot of effort. You have to carry out each problem in exactly the right way so partial credit can be more of a curse than a blessing. Extra credit opportunities
Professor Pigg is an amazing teacher and helps students learn the material very well. However, this is a hard class and was by far my most time consuming class. This is not the class for you if you just want an easy A
She is really helpful during office hours, but you must come in with specific questions. She will not reteach material during office hours. It is easy to boost your grade with dropped quizzes and bonus points for attending weekly discussion classes. Tests are very difficult if you do not fully understand material and know how to combine all topics.
The weekly quizzes are deliberately challenging (as are the tests tbh) but are doable if you complete the homework and packet she gives you beforehand. She is helpful in office hours (come with a question in mind) and gives a good extra credit boost at the end. Despite not being particularly good at math, I managed to pull a B+ in this class.
Professor Pigg is an amazing lecturer. Tests are hard but everything on the tests are similar to the problems that she taught us how to solve in class. Go to every lecture and study her handouts before tests and you'll be fine. Calculus is a subject that requires a lot of hard work. A is hard to get but not impossible.
Really nice and sweet lady who cares a lot about her students. Despite this, extremely hard class. 12 quizzes but get to drop 2. Usually hard and really necessary to do well on tests, but the tests are extremely difficult as well. If you aren't a math person this isn't the course for you.
She teaches a difficult subject. Sometimes points will be taken off for little things. Overall though, she cares a lot about her students and teaches very clearly.
RIP GPA. She is super fake about being bubbly. Very snappish when you ask her questions and the tests are more about formatting than math. Very frustrating. She is not a nice person and despite what she says about wanting to help you, nothing about this class really helps you learn. If you're doing good, it'll stay that way if not, she won't help
Absolutely wonderful prof who is invested in her students' success. Works hard to ensure that you understand the material and feel prepared for exams.
The class is ridiculous and is based so much on format rather than mathematics. The professor has office hits at such short time brackets and refused to answer questions when I asked her. She would say that we didn't go over it in class so it wouldn't be on the test and yelled. She had two sides to her which was really annoying and she didn't care.
Prof Pigg is very caring and an excellent teacher. Her handouts are very helpful. Do your homework and study the handouts. Very helpful during office hours. Don't try to con her, she will call you out. She's tough but if you work she will help you.
This class is the most format heavy math class I have ever taken. You literally get points taken off you get the right answer, but don't get there the way she wants. Blames everything on the Math Department. Seems happy-go-lucky but couldn't care less about you outside the class. Honestly would have been better to take 1300 than 1200 with Pigg.
Races through problems in lecture, not super eager to get to know students on a personal basis. The most high school-like class you'll take in college.
Pigg is the best option for 1200. Her quizzes are hard. Youll have one weekly (worth 15 pts each) pretty much. But exams will be easier because youre way better prepared. I actually learned a lot and am good at calc now. She gives a lot of opportunities to raise your grade at the end of the semester. Take her if you can.
Great at conveying material but be sure to pay attention as she moves fast. Quizzes and tests are very difficult but that may just be the entire math department.
Clear when teaching concepts, but goes super fast on the board. Takes the time to further explain if asked to make sure you get it. Has a sense of humor. Quizzes and tests cover exactly what was taught in class, but are made harder because of time constraint.
Prof. Pigg is not the best option for Calc 1201. She gives incredibly difficult quizzes which should be buffers to your tests, but instead they are extremely hard. She doesn't teach effectively and just simply solves problems on the board without teaching how to do them. I had to teach myself through the textbook for each quiz and test.
Sweet lady, likes to help, but is pretty stubborn when it comes to grading/her TAs usually grade really tough. She's pretty funny and openly embraces her southerness which is nice, but she is just a really hard teacher to do well in.
The worst professor I had at Vanderbilt. Period. I took MATH 1100 as someone who has already taken math courses level above it just to fulfill a requirement and I despised the class. Terrible grading methods and she doesn't understand how to teach. She gets mad at students who question her speed or don't understand. She caused everyone to hate math
Thought calc was easy in high and figured MATH 1100 wouldn't be too hard? Yea, me too. Prof Pigg teaches very fast and is pretty negative when it comes to answering questions. Sweet lady though :)
Prof. Pigg gives great handouts. Shes always available during Ofc hours but theyre in the early morning. Go to class and study the handouts and youll be ok. Im not a math person but did ok.
Second time I took this class; even though I already knew the material and studied more and even felt like I performed better on the tests, she has absolutely insane grading policies. Instructs TA's to cut points for handwriting/less work/shoddiness, even though there is no space to actually write the answers down.
Honestly, the class is tough. I took calc in HS and still felt like I was learning entirely new things because they were so much more difficult and in depth than before. But she really does want the class to succeed, despite the difficulty. She allots class time for questions and is always willing to go over quiz/exam questions. Lots of EC too.
Prof Pigg is absolutely the greatest. I really liked her handouts and she was very helpful during office hours. Lots of quizzes and tests but you get to drop a couple of quizzes. Do the homework go to class and you should do fine.
I came into this class having taken AP Calc in high school thinking it was going to be easy, but it was incredibly difficult. Definitely my biggest time commitment, and I personally wasn't a fan of her teaching style. The tests and a lot of the quizzes are incredibly hard and you will have to grind for a good grade. Extra credit helps though
Her class is difficult, but calculus is a weed-out class so it's really what you'd expect. She's nice, and you can do decently if you've been exposed to Calculus before and do ALL the homework. However, if you didn't have rigorous exposure to calculus in high school, I would consider taking an easy math first to get used to math at Vandy.
She is pretty stubborn and when asked for clarification or to slow down, she does not receive feedback well. However, she does really want people to succeed. Quizzes and tests are pretty hard to do well in, a lot of people took it pass fail which was manageable. Learn her handouts well and you should be fine although her tests are always harder
The class was difficult but I did not have calculus in high school. Class was very organized and I had to get extra help during office hours. She was very helpful and answered all my questions. Some were taking the class pass/fail and were ticked that they had to do something. I learned a lot.
I was retaking calculus this semester. Prof. Pigg was amazing. Her lectures were so easy to follow and she was able to break things down so that I could understand. I definitely recommend her if you want to understand. My grade is so much better this time. Her tests and quizzes are very thorough but do-able.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. If you have not taken calc before, DON'T take this class. She is unhelpful, rude, and does not care about her students in any way. Her teaching style is simply doing problems on the board very quickly with little explanation.
Prof. Pigg is one of the worst professors at Vanderbilt. Be ready to learn how to do the math exactly how she does it. Use X instead of Y but get the same answer? You get a 0. She takes her lack of understanding out on you. Genuinely enjoying failing kids and with a pass rate of roughly 50%, this class is not for you. Take ANY other 1200 Prof.
I found Prof Pigg to be very organized and knowledgeable . Math at Vandy is a weed out course. I was taking for the second time. Piggs class is so much better than the last time. I always go to office hours for help. Its a lot of work but she is very helpful. Her handouts are very helpful. She seems to enjoy teaching.
4 tests and a final. Weedout class. You have to go to class, do all the homework, and study in order to do well, but it's possible. This class requires commitment to do well. Great teacher and lots of help resources. If you do pass/fail, you have to put in effort to pass. Would recommend 1100 for peabody or no background in math.
Save yourself the trouble. DON'T TAKE PIGG, I failed so you don't have to.
Pamela Pigg ignored most student requests for simple things like "could you give a 5 min warning for the end of quizzes". She sped through class lessons and did not care to slow down and explain clearly. She also was very harsh with grades and took off for anything, in office hours, she would always try to rush through all students and questions.
Great professor. Great handouts. Very helpful and kind during office hours. I was retaking calculus this semester and found the experience very good. You have to study. Im no math brain but made it through. Do the homework and go to office hours to get help.
Like many others this semester I was retaking calculus. Prof Pigg was great. She knows how to break difficult concepts down so they are easier to understand. Go to class, do the homework and go to office hours for help. My grade is so much better this time.
Professor Pigg is extremely organized and detailed. She does move quickly in class so be prepared and don't be afraid to stop and ask her questions! 1200 is a weedout class so you will have to work through every single problem on the homework to really be prepared for the exams. The final is especially tough!
SHE WASN'T VERY UNDERSTANDING OF PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES AFFECTING MY GRADES OR THE FACT THAT HER CLASS WAS ONLY MANAGEABLE IF YOU'VE PREVIOUSLY TAKEN A CALCULUS CLASS BEFORE.
Pigg's class covers a lot of material very quickly and therefore moves very quickly in class. She's somewhat brisk, but she really wants you to succeed. She distributes a list of topics and practice problems before each exam, then works through it in class. She's also very funny with her southern colloquialisms. You'll have to work, but she's fair.
Prof Pigg made calculus both enjoyable and unnecessarily stressful at the same time. If you follow what she's saying you're in a great place, but if you stop to ask her a question, she will get annoyed and has trouble explaining things in a different way. Tests and quizzes are difficult, do not expect much partial credit or explanation of points.
Professor Pigg definitely brightens up 1200 with her sass/humor. Pay attention in class, keep up with homework (it's never turned in, but it's good practice), & review for quizzes & tests, & you'll do just fine. Drops your lowest 2 quizzes, averages your final with your lowest test, & gives extra credit for each week you go to your discussion.
She is SO BORING. Each class she just stands at the board, works through her packet, while we stay completely silent and many people are confused. She's not very caring about her students and is very unapproachable. She does drop our lowest quiz grade and gives a bit of extra credit opportunity at the end of the year which is nice though.
12 quizzes (you drop two), four tests, and a final. Pigg is a solid choice, IF you understand calculus prior to Vandy. She definitely expects a decent background in algebra so if you're going to need a lot of support in that regard I would advise against that. Generous with partial credit and isn't an actual professor so pretty laid back overall.
Do not this class with professor pigg unless you have a solid background in calc. She speeds through the lectures, is unnecessarily strict about her guidelines and is not very understanding of others situations. Additionally, she is highly uncommunicative and can be difficult to work with.
Made tests pointlessly hard. Didn't help in conceptual understanding in any way, just copied notes onto board. Zero communication between her and the TA, so the TA became useless as he didn't know any of the grading criteria. Wasnt present for office hours. Made me think I was trash at math until I took upper-division courses and did decent. Avoid
