Very nice lady! really recommend her. all her tests are directly off of her notes which are off of basic concepts. lots of memorization but pretty easy course!
Lovely teacher. Taught us exactly what we needed to know, friendly, approachable, down to earth
Good professor, easy subject to take to get core requirements out of the way. Study guides to the exams practically mirrored the actual exam
Pamela was very nice. I was in the weekend class, which was super fast paced (definitely would not recommend). Hard material but going to the weekly study group helped tremendously. You NEED to study for hours and hours for the test. Thankfully a large part of the grade was homework/quizzes so be on top of that! Overall, I would recommend Pamela.
Very good teacher. Almost all exam questions came right off study guide, jeopardy review, or in class clicker questions. Online assignment are very easy. Lab write-ups also pretty easy. Overall pretty easy class.
Horrible teacher! Her way of teaching is by reading her notes to you. Her tests are made from test banks that are usualy not very clear. She takes on way more then she can handle. It takes her 2 weeks to return a test. Dont take this teacher.
This is just a hard class that covers a lot of material. As far as her teaching, she's goes over things pretty clearly. You just have to pay attention. The material is pretty boring and there's a lot of it. There's plenty of ways to get extra credit. The exams were hard. I studied for this class about twice as much as for other classes.
I took the Saturday class and I regret taking it. It is a lot of material to cover over a 4hour lecture in one day. The exams were brutal! 2 exams and 10 quiz?s make up your total grade. Wish I took the regular session, but UNR had only time slot; which messes up the schedule.
Really great instructor, had her summer course BIOL190 this summer. Course goes very fast but she paces it well, if you do the work for the class you'll do fine. Lots of extra discussion groups, clicker questions, etc. Really nice too, always available for office hours. She's also real funny.
Sandstrom believes that every student should know certain material already which is not always the case. Her comments about those who miss clicker questions are sadly noted. The quiz is not easy and you must work hard at getting an A in this course. Most students will earn a B.
I'm an A student who earned a B in this class. She acts like you should know a lot when it's an intro class. Take at CC elsewhere.
She is sometimes confusing but if you ask for help she is very helpful. Her lectures are long and the exams are fair. Do all the problems she assigns and focus on her lectures.(took her over the summer)
She's a great teacher but there are times she didn't know what she was talking about. Took during summer and she rush with trying to cramp everything in unlike most teacher. Exams are hard because the gradings are heavy but there are extra credit points :) I don't recommend summer class with her but regular semester would be good. Neutral w recomen
Hard to understand, if you understand well from teachers who are clear and concise she is not who you want to take! She mumbles sometimes and talks way too fast to keep up.
You will need to work hard in the class, but you will learn so much. Lectures go fast, so print ppt to take notes. Offers plenty of extra credit and help. SI sessions are VERY useful. Grades fairly and there are no surprises on the tests. Overall excellent course and professor, I would highly recommend. Took course this past fall.
Great professor! Super organized, very nice and always willing to help. Be ready to work in her class though. There is a lot of material and she moves quickly to get through it. I suggest bringing the powerpoint to class and taking separate notes. She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
She's a pretty good professor. Expected from a bio class, it's really fast paced and you should bring your laptop or print out the ppt slides before class. Exams are pretty hard, but she posts worksheets and masteringbio reviews for all the exams. There is lots of extra credit: clicker/discussion groups.
She's a very enthusiastic teacher. There are no surprises on the tests. Need to study to do well, but it's all in the power points. Print the PDF of the presentations to take notes. She talks fast. Extra credit for clickers and discussion groups. Easiest homework ever. Lowest test score dropped. First college textbook I've actually used.
The exams are tough and long, but the questions are the same as the homework and recommended problems. Sign up for SI sessions. They are extra credit and helpful for working out the assigned problems.
Dr. Sandstrom is a very helpful teacher. She makes lectures as interesting as possible, and she extremely nice when you talk to her outside of class. You'll need to read the chapters in the book to get an A.
Great Professor!
Fast paced, exams are tough, homework takes a while to do, and a lot of reading and studying is involved. But there's a lot of extra credit opportunities and her and her TA's are helpful. You just have to work for your grade!
My favorite professor! Sheâ??s fast paced, the homework is really easy. She's clear and goes over things a million times to get it ingrained in your mind. The tests are easy if you study and take a look at the practice problems she puts up online. There are some extra credit opportunities.
She is a really great professor, she really challenges her students but the material is interesting so it's easy to keep up with her. Study the power points and do all the extra credit you can. She moves really fast too so be prepared.
Sandstrom can feel like a stern teacher at times, but as long as you pay attention to her powerpoints and her MasteringBiology assignments, you will be on your way to an A. Didn't even read the book. Just make sure to not get on her bad side, or else she won't be willing to help you out.
She was way too hash for a bio 190 class, her tests are also way to hard for the amount she actually teachers you. The only perk of going to class is you get extra credit for answering clicker questions, otherwise she will put you to sleep.
Definitely fast paced, and the tests WILL be difficult if you don't study. But if you just study and do the homework, then you should be fine in this class. She's always willing to help and there's always TAs to help as well. Just study hard and do the homework, she's a nice lady.
She is always ready to help her students and give extra credit. Love her :)
Dr. Sandstrom is super nice and always willing to help the students. The course itself is difficult, but like others said, do the homework and actually study and you'll be fine. I didn't really read the book, but studied the figures in her powerpoints online. Plus, she gives tons of extra credit opportunities!
Dr. Sandstrom is an amazing professor. The class is pretty difficult, but if you actually read your book and do the extra studying you can do really well in this class. If you study you will be fine on the test. I thought they were easy, but I studied a lot for them. Dr. Sandstrom makes it so much easier to understand, so definitely take her.
Sandstrom is absoutely amazing and I would recommend anyone take her class. You definitely have to read the book if you want to understand the material more, as she goes through her powerpoint slides very fast. However, if you come to class prepared, she makes everything very easy to understand.
Sandstrom is nice and knows what she is talking about. You need to study outside her lectures and homework though. She has a bit of the "my class is the most important" stigma about her. Which is hard when you are also having to worry about your other classes. Overall she's pretty good, don't take her if you have a hard schedule to begin with.
She is such a good professor! Take her for 190 if you can. She lectures well and if you read the book, you will understand and do well. She gives lots of extra credit options and the discussion groups are so helpful plus they give you ec! Just read the book, do your hw and quizzes, go to class for the clicker points, and you will pass no problem.
Sandstrom is an awesome professor. She truly does everything she can to help you receive a good grade. Go to her lectures... the clicker questions are extra credit, so why not sit in a class for an hour? Go to discussion groups, read the text, & you'll get a good grade in the class.
This is a really hard class. There is so much information to retain. Discussion groups are very helpful. If she does offer extra credit, do them! They'll help your grade get that little boost in the end. Do the extra problems she recommends in the textbook. This is not the class to slack off in and expect an easy A
She is a great professor. She explained things clearly and there was the use of online lectures and the textbook which made the class easier. Keep up with the readings for the class and go to discussion groups. It really helps!
The class was very difficult but I felt as if she made it that way. She'd go really fast through powerpoints and it's hard to retain information that way. You're pretty much on your own. Study from her old exams, and take advantage of every extra credit opportunity you can get. Go to discussion sessions, they really helped.
Sandstrom is awesome! She does everything she can to help you receive a decent grade. She gives so many extra credit opportunities and tells you exactly what the short answers are going to be on the exams. She really wants everyone to do great in the class. Just read the textbook, go to the lectures/discussions and you'll do just fine.
She is very knowledgeable in the area of Genetics. However, her lectures sometimes lack clarity as she goes through material very quickly. There is also a huge emphasis placed on the "extra" material that you will have to complete to get an A, simply because her tests are difficult and the extra practice is needed. Be prepared to work hard.
She is a very knowledgeable teacher that loves genetics. Her tests are kind of hard but she has opportunities for extra credit by using clickers during class and going to discussion groups. The discussion groups are really helpful and they go over different problems. She also does reviews before every test. You need to study but not extremely hard
I took it over summer and it was a good class. She's a great teacher and her TA's were great also. EVERYONE especially loved Frank so get help from him if you can. The difficulty level is moderate. There's a lot of information, but she gives students plenty of opportunities to do well. Pay attention to the content presented during lectures.
Good class. One of the TAs was especially clear and helpful, so be sure to use the extra discussion groups that are available. The extra credit from the groups are also really important.
Sandstrom is very knowledgeable and explains things well. If you need more explanation, going to her office hours help, as well as attending the discussion sessions. Her tests can be difficult, so you need to study a lot, but its worth it to have her as a professor
Excellent professor. This is an upper-division biology course so be prepared for lots of homework, quizzes, tests, videos, discussion group worksheets and clicker questions. Attend her classes and discussion groups. These help immensely! If she posts a video, watch it several times. It WILL be on the test. Very fair professor.
Be prepared to learn completely on your own via textbook and videos. Sandstrom fails as a teacher due to her superficial covering of the material. Grades inflated from extra credit and she does want you to do well. Could be an easy A and makes tests seem easy, only to trick you with needless tricky questions and confusing word play on exams.
Sandstrom is a fun teaching imo. For an intro bio class it's tougher than I would like; however if you're a bio major or a pre-health major this is probably a good wake up call as to what you need to do for all of your classes from here on out. I liked the material, and her but I despised how tough she made the class out to be. Good Luck.
First two exams will be easy compared to last two exams. Drops lowest midterm. Offers little EC points. Exams will take some time to study for. Do all the recommended problems!!!! Watch the videos posted and know lecture notes. One of the harder classes I have taken this semester, I got an A.
This teacher goes really fast through the slides and it is hard to keep up. Uses a different teacher's videos and expects you to watch them when she doesn't take the time to make her own. Very disappointed by this teachers teaching style. Try to take a different teacher.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to go to class, I went the majority of the semester and got A's on the exams, around mid semester I stopped and got a D on the test, luckily you get a drop test. GO TO CLASS! and go to the optional discussions, they helped me get through respiration/photosynthesis with ease
Dr. Sandstrom is extremely passionate about what she does. She's a phenomenal teacher. She does use Dr. P's videos, but there's nothing wrong with exposing yourself to more useful info. The only reason that people don't like this class is because it's a LOT of work that they aren't willing to put in. But Dr. S provides everything needed to succeed
Exams are tricky, Practice exams (pervious semesters) and practice test (From study area in Mastering genetics) helpful to narrow study. Statistics; chi-square, probability. Dr. Sandstrom Doesn't have a Doctorate for nothing... *sarcasm* Good luck ..
Excellent teacher. Provides you with ample resources to do well in her class that are easy to find and use. All of the work in class is relevant. Tough tests if you don't study. VERY fair. Also very clear in her teachinglecture notesexpectations. She never got lazy and always provided stellar clarificationtips.
She is clear in her lectures but goes through the material quickly. She expects you to have read the chapter, watched the online lectures, and taken notes on her slides before coming to class. Even if you do all of this the class material is still difficult. She tests straight from her notes and the MB online work. If taking this class choose her.
to get an A: read the chapter(s) for the week the weekend before class starts and fill out the notes read the chapters throughout the week do the homework and participate in group DO ALL OF THE MULTIPLE CHOICE IN THE PRACTICE AREA STUDY THE MODELS THE WEEK BEFORE MULTIPLE TIMES do not skip class, must get clicker points!
The tests are tough, you need to read, do the study area questions, and watch the videos in order to ace them. If you do that though, they are actually not that bad. Her lectures are great and she's really nice. Seems to care a lot for her students too.
I loved Dr. Sandstrom! This class was an easy A even when I only got A's on a few exams. The extra homework problems really helped to boost up my grade. She pulls off her long answers right off the discussion group worksheets. I learned a lot in that class and I don't think she was difficult at all. Just redo all the discussion group worksheets.
Lots of supplemental material given that you are tested on that ISN'T covered in class. Quizzes for every chapter due before the homework and sometimes before lecture. Rushes through your question and basically tells you 'you should of learned that in introductory bio.' She said this is a 'weeder' class. Would NOT recommend!!!!!!!!!
A class which could have been fun and interesting was turned into a mess, there are too many different "resources" which spread information that we need to know all over the place, without any sort of study guide in which to direct our time. Something is wrong when I get high 90's-100's in ohem and biochem tests, but barely get b's in genetics.
It was very frustrating trying to complete homework and MDG before we even had a lecture on the material. Be ready to teach yourself genetics. I recommend making friends to study with you so you can do good on homework and quizzes. Good thing she doesn't teach it in the fall!
There are clicker quizzes in lecture where you apply what you just learned. Fridays are discussion groups, attendance is mandatory as is participating in class. Reading the book after lectures and taking notes really helped. She uploads a practice test before each exam as well as holds test reviews the day before the test. Very clear and helpful.
MDG are more helpful than her. Gives you extra credit which counts up to 2% of your grade. Test are tricky.
Attend lecture, watch the videos, & do the study area quizzescumulative tests & the exams will be pretty easy. She sometimes takes class questions right from the study area, but might change a few words around, so I would really recommend doing them! MDG was easy, just participate and do the worksheets. Clicker points and HW just boost your grade.
Dr. Sandstrom was an extremely supportive teacher. If you're having trouble, you just need to ask for help, and if you're still having trouble ask to learn it a different way. The Mastering Genetics modules can be helpful if you're not getting what you need to from her. The tests correspond highly with the materials you learn in lecture and MDGs.
Things I hated about Sandstrom was the same things I LOVED ABOUT her class: She is blunt, straight forward and direct about what YOU need to know and study for the exams. She is a Scientist, her humor may be lost on sensitive students, but you will get EDUCATED in class. READ THE BOOK. Do the ALL the homework. She will help you succeed if you try!!
Tough material. Gives good lectures and is really helpful during office hours. Read the book, do the homework, and clarify information during office hours.
Dr. Sandstrom's Introductory Biology course requires A LOT of work to survive, but it is doable, thanks to test questions she pulls from the MasteringBiology site, comprehensive review sessions the night before each test, and discussion groups each Friday. Attendance is mandatory due to clickers. Take this class with her!
I took Biology with her over the summer. As a professor, she really knows the material and tells you what you need to know for exams. The tests can be tricky, but if you actually read the textbook, it's entirely possible to do well on all the tests. That being said, she is not necessarily a likable person. She can come off as arrogant and rude.
The grade has to be earned. She posts the powerpoints early so you know the clicker Q's & what to expect in class, clearly tells you the chapters and the schedule & what you'll need to know for tests. Read the book. She talks fast so best to have slides printed out or on computer & just supplement what she says on them. Loved this class though!
Her genetics class was one of my hardest in college. She speeds though a lot of material in lectures. The tests were way too long for a 50 minute class, I barely ever finished. They are full of extremely tricky mc and free response questions. The mandatory discussion groups on Fridays do not prepare you for the exam. I would not recommend her.
The 3 exams aren't worth much like 10%, then the online homework and quizzes every week. Class attendance is mandatory using the "learning catalytics". Usually a learning assistant is nearby to get the answer from. You replace a test score with your LC grade. Need to be able to work on your own and study because in class you dont learn much.
To get an A in BIOL 190 you have to work for it. Tests are pretty tricky but the study area on mastering bio has similar questions. Class isn't mandatory but must attend if you want learning catalytics points which replaces your lowest test grade. MDG leaders will most of the time hold reviews which helped me more than Sandstrom did.
The discussion groups are pretty helpful for this class. A lot of the material seems to be review from BIO 190, but we go into a little more depth. If you do the assigned problems in the book, it will really help you prepare for the tests.
Dr. Sandstrom is super intelligent and understands the material. But lectures move fast so be prepared to do a lot of learning on your own. You'll get the grade you want as long as you are willing to put the studying in. Attendance isn't required, but learning catalytics(in class participation points) replaces lowest test score so you should go
She very clearly lines up what you need to know for the test. This is not a class you can fall asleep in. Pay attention and stay up to date, which isn't that hard, you'll do well. Sandstrom is incredibly smart and passionate. One of the best teachers I have ever had, maybe the only one I've had that cares that her students actually LEARN
Dr. Sandstrom is hands down the bestest most nicest professor on campus. She is hilarious and her class is so interesting and fun thanks to the learning catalytics questions. Definitely choose her for genetics because the discussion groups really help and you will love going to class. She tries to help everyone get the best grade possible.
Horrible class, expect to teach this class by yourself, tests and quizzes are extremely hard
Professor Sandstrom really wants her students to succeed and understand the material, which made this class great. There was a lot of opportunity to be exposed to the test material from MDG, learning catalytics, textbook problems, mastering genetics, and more, so it made the tests pretty straightforward. Overall, loved her class!
Dr. Sandstrom really wants her students to succeed, which makes her all the more admirable. The class rarely goes into the depth the textbook does, so I never really used it. It is not impossible to get a B in this class, but effort needs to be put in.
Do the readings and take the notes from the powerpoint before attending lectures - you must be proactive to succeed. Overall, she set out clear expectations and provided plenty of resources that could be utilized to do well in this class. Tests are tricky but doable - show up to class b/c participation grade replaces lowest test score.
Sandstrom is one of the best professors I have come across thus far. She really knows the material and truly wants her students succeed. With that being said, her class is still difficult but she provides all the resources needed to succeed. Go to class and the reviews, really study the review sheets and practice images and you'll do fine.
Sandstrom was a tough professor, but she teaches well. She is clear in her powerpoints lectures and homework expectations. Be willing to do the work and you'll be fine. Her tests are tricky but if you want to succeed in the science department they all test the same way, so get used to it. The book and her reviews are very helpful.
I took the summer course. She does not make any compromises for the shortened schedule. Class definitely kicked my butt a bit. She expects you to learn most of the material outside of class and then reviews it in class. EXAMS ARE ALL APPLICATION QUESTIONS BEWARE. Exams were very hard but passable. Not horrible but not great.
This was one of the most difficult classes I've taken. Tests are very hard, and lecture notes are extensive. I am not a biology major so I feel that she made it unnecessarily difficult. I passed the class but with a lot of effort that didn't really show. Not much or any extra credit. Be prepared to teach yourself and beware of many sleepless nights
A lot of people said this was going to be a difficult course, but it wasn't that bad. The majority of the questions on her exams were copied and pasted from the reviews and the Study Area questions. She also replaces your lowest exam grade with your Learning Catalytic's grade. Her lectures are very helpful because she explains concepts really well.
Great professor. She gives you every opportunity to get an A and succeed but you have to work for it. She makes you stay current in the class with homeworks and daily questions and while this may seem annoying to many it makes studying for exams so much easier because you are actually forced to study. She's a great lecturer, talks fast.
Since I took this class online it was a lot of work. There are lectures to watch, chapters to read, and lots of assignments. However, these are all necessary due to the nature of this class and gives you lots of resources to learn from. Dr. Sandstrom was very accessible and answered questions promptly.
Dr. Sandstrom explains everything very clearly, and really shows how much she wants her students to succeed. She holds test reviews before every test, takes time to answer questions, and gives you a lot of resources in order to help you do well in her class. This class takes a lot of work, but if you use your resources you will likely do well.
Get ready to teach yourself. She moves through material at a very fast speed. The powerpoints do not go anywhere near in depth as what is expected for the exam. You absolutely have to read the book. Also, you are forced and graded on going to discussion, which is a bit annoying. The questions on the exam will in no way be similar to practice
So Dr. Sandstorm is not the easiest professor out there but that being said Biology is not the easiest subject. If you do the college minimum you will pass no problem. This class is the basis of all the rest of biology courses here so be prepared to do reading or extra studying in order to do well especially if you don't have a strong background
I have to take Bio190 to graduate and I can honestly say I loved Dr. Sandstrom. This class was very hard, but also very well taught. Dr. Sandstrom actually cares about her students and their grade, she also gives extra credit that is so easy you have no excuse not to do it. Also I had an amazing TA. It's a hard class, but she is the best option.
Her lectures were alright, but the structure of the class was organized. She doesn't take attendance, but she does online questions during class that can be used to replace your lowest test grade. Her discussion classes were mandatory and you had to read ahead to get full points in class, but it motivated me to read and stay on track.
Because this is an entry level class, it's always insanely huge. You have to really work to stay focused with so many people in the room, but she does a good job at keeping lectures interesting. The information is difficult; try to take notes on the posted powerpoints before class and then add to them as she presents. It helps a ton!
This is the best class that I have taken at UNR. I found the content interesting and comprehensible. The struggle is to keep up!! Do NOT show up to lectures unprepared. Read the book, do your HW, and attend all lectures. Just do it and your grade will thank you. There are so many resources for this class so I recommend you use them.
This class was a harder biology class, but Dr. Sandstrom makes it easier. She gives many opportunities to do well and will always give enjoyable lectures. She is very passionate and educated.
The class only 50 minutes long, so it is impossible for her to go over topics in detail so you must do it on your own in order to learn. The material is not extremely difficult, but it is not easier either. She drops the lowest test score and replaces the grade with your Learning Catalytics score (an Easy A), so go to class!
A solid & easy leadership teaching position for sophomores and juniors. You basically help TA the SCI 110 class. Dr. Sandstrom is easily one of the best faculty members at the university. I have taken 4 classes with her and she is my faculty advisor and 9/10 times when people do not like her classes its because she makes you work for your grade.
Pamela's so nice! Your lowest score's dropped by the LC score so I suggest going to class to get those points so it's an easy A for an exam! Make sure to do hw on time because they're worth it. The only bad thing is that she spent so much time in the first half, that now she's rushing through the material to finish but the last half's the hardest..
Sandstorm is such a great professor. She really knows her stuff and you can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. The class itself is really hard, there is a-lot of homework and she does not just want you to memorize things but really have a grasp on what everything is and does. Would love to take her class again.
Dr. Sandstrom was great! She is very nice and will really go out of her way to help you understand the topic. In class you'll have to do learning catalytics for a grade but they can replace a low test score so do them! Overall, her class wasn't too hard you just have to put forth a little effort. She also does not curve so keep that in mind.
Dr. Sandstrom actually makes you understand concepts rather than memorizing the material which really throws people off. Understanding discussion worksheets, practice problem worksheets, and progress tests are key to studying for exams. Getting an A is hard but totally possible. She is super approachable and helpful in office hours.
If you want a dope Bio teacher that cares about her students, is down to Earth, is willing to see you outside of class, answers emails, and makes MOLECULAR BIOLOGY easy to understand, then Dr. Sandstrom is your professor. Straight up...
This class is definitely challenging but she gives you all the tools to succeed so use them! She allows you to drop either a unit exam or your participation grade, which is counted as a test as well. I loved this class and would 10/10 take another class of hers!
Good teacher. Tests aren't too bad just make sure you go to class and do homework (for a B/C grade). Wish I would have just put in a little time to get the A because its totally doable. Lecture heavy but explains things well. Nice teacher.
This professor is an amazing human being. She was always available in her office hours and moments after class to answer any questions you may have. She would go in depth on what you needed to know rather than what the course says you should know. She dropped one of your two exams and the lowest 3 quiz scores in her summer class. 5 weeks got an A.
She's the definition of tough love. She 100% cares about her students, but she doesn't quite let you just have the A. You definitely have to show up to class, do the homework, and study (just a little!). She gives you everything you need to get an A. Take the cumulative practice tests in the study area on pearson before the exams!!!
Dr. Sandstrom's class is set up to help you truly understand difficult biology concepts. I'd highly recommend attending class as often as possible since the pace at which we learn is very quick. She has a great sense of humor, is constantly giving us opportunities to learn and practice genetics concepts, and is all-around a fantastic choice.
She is an awesome professor and really really intelligent. She lectures from start to finish and her tests are fairly hard. She is accessible in office hours and her feedback is great but she is just so smart it almost makes you feel dumb
This is a very difficult class and I had to retake it but this time I took it with her and did so much better! She is very knowledgeable and wants everyone to succeed. She gave a lot of extra credit opportunities and is very understanding. Good professor!
Cares about her students, helped me out during COVID. Has a lot of extra credit so do not take it for granted. There is a lot of work but it is to help you learn all the material thoroughly.. stay on your grind! Highly recommend Dr. Sandstrom.
Shes a very good professor and its evident she knows her field very well. Ive enjoyed having her as my professor, I recommend showing up to class since theres LC questions every class which is always added to your grade. Your lowest exam score is dropped, and she offers so many extra credits to add to your exams ! Take advantage and work hard!
Pamela is great. Go to your discussion group and actually talk, it helps a lot. The tests are tough but the MDG leaders give great ways to study and review the material. A lot is review from biology 190, but don't fall behind when you get past the 190 material, it gets hard fast. Lots of extra credit opportunities if you pay attention to webcampus.
Condescending, patronizing, constantly reminding students how hard her class is and how they still have time to drop instead of encouraging them. Does not respect student confidentiality in regard to grades or DRC status. Study the LC questions and lecture slides and you'll do good on her tests if you have to take her. Would not recommend.
This professor is not good. Taking this class during COVID was the worst. She gives you the lecture videos that you should watch separately that are longer than the actual lectures. Meanwhile, during the zoom lecture, she doesn't lecture. She gives us so much homework, she doesn't explain well and she goes to fast. DO NOT TAKE HER AS A PROFESSOR
I wish more than anything I could be taking this course with a different professor. As an online class this is by the worst I have ever had. Impossible to take notes during lecture because she is constantly going back and forth between different screens and SEPARATE lecture slides made for us to read on our own time. Might drop.
Don't expect to pass this class with ease. I'm taking it during COVID, and I'm doing very well. You really do have to put in the work. The material is NOT easy, but the tests and quizzes are absolutely fair game. Professor isn't the best at explaining concepts, but the TA's are so so so amazing.
Professor Sandstrom is a a tough teacher but she cares that her students actually learn. She provided me with excellent resources to excel in her class. She is attentive and followed through with me about specific issues I had with the course material. She taught me how to study at a college science level and now I am going to attend medical school
I took Dr. Sandstrom's class in the spring and it was the best science class I've ever taken. She cares a lot about helping her students succeed and was super understanding as COVID moved us online. The class may not be an Easy A for everyone, but it's not as hard as reviews make it out to be.
A lot of different assignments are given each week and it's a little confusing to keep track of everything. The SI sessions were the most helpful part about this class.
This class had a lot of assignments but Dr. Sandstrom did a good job of sending out reminders about them and many assignments were short and easy. She was very clear about the grading which was also helpful. At the beginning of the semester I was kind of intimidated by the way she presented her class, but once I adjusted it was not too bad.
There's a LOT of work that goes into this class, and while it feels unnecessary and extreme, you'll thank yourself for doing it. You have to put the time and effort in. I did not find her zoom lectures helpful, except for the breakout LA groups. She's intimidating and can come off as rude at times, but don't let it get to you.
Extremely hard class for me. I am not a science person, so I had to work a lot harder than others. I took the first open note exam and failed. I quickly realized what I was doing wasn't enough. I never thought it would be possible to get an A, but I did it. The only thing that really helped me was the SI sessions with the LAs, and the extra credit.
Horrible class. Average test scores of open book was at the 70% range. Midterm: 66% avg score. She asks "why did everyone score bad on the midterm?" If you know that a closed book test scores are lower than open book, what do you think? Literally, do bad on the midterm, your grade is dropped 2 letter grades. Her tests are really hard. Horrible.
she was excellent. yes, there is a lot of work, but this is also an entry level bio class, setting most students up to be taking bio classes into 400 level. imo it was very fair to have to read the textbook and go to a discussion. take her class, you won't regret it if you love biology
MDG's and going to the BHC were super helpful, but you really have to put in the work to understand the material and understand how to solve the math-type problems. Sandstrom's Genetics class was very similar in structure to Pravosudova's BIOL 190A class if that's your cup of tea. Go to lectures! They may not be mandatory, but they can be helpful.
This class was difficult. There is a lot of material to cover in such little time and you are expected to know basically everything. She speaks fast and rambles on about irrelevant things. Learned more in discussion and on my own than I did from attending lectures.
I took this class online over the summer. You are expected to know the smallest details, sometimes barely mentioned. Nothing is open note in online, even equations are to be memorized. The online lectures are bland, you learn more going to the zoom discussion sessions. Maybe she's better in person, but the online for this class was rough.
This was definitely a challenging class, especially having in mind that it is an online course. However, Dr. Psandstrom is super helpful. This class is content heavy however she makes sure to make herself available for students and makes sure you understand the material by giving feedback. She truly wants her students to be successful in her class.
Dr. Sandstrom is amazing! She offers a lot of extra credit and the online lectures are super helpful. If you put in the effort, you can excel in her class. Go to the SI sessions to help reinforce any content, and take advantage of many resources offered. Dr. Sandstrom goes above and beyond to help her students succeed.
This is a tough class and it is all online. Dr. Sandstrom outlines the time and dedication needed to do well before class even starts. It was helpful to read the textbook along with the lectures and I would also recommend attending the review sessions. She provides a lot of extra problem sets for practice and extra credit.
Professor Sandstrom is amazing. She's very easy to reach, understanding, offers plenty of extra credit, and she prepares you for the exams. The exams are hard and you need to study, but there's a lot of homework so they aren't weighted too heavy. Would absolutely recommend her
She is the worst professor ever. She literally stood our class of 200 that nobody will remembers anything she teaches, and that we are supposed to teach ourselves with homework. That sounds alright when you think about it, but in reality, when you have no clue whats going on, biology is the most difficult thing Ive done. Do not take her.
Dr. Sandstrom provides you with all the materials you need to succeed. Lecture only covers a portion of the content, you cover most of the rest in your discussion group which are usually ran well. If you spend time outside of class mastering content, then you will do well in this course. Tests are very difficult but there is plenty of extra credit.
As long as you come prepared to class you'll do great. Be sure to either read the chapter from the textbook or watch the videos provided and you'll do fine. As long as you understand the concept the exams shouldn't't be too difficult.
My god this class was so much work for a 100 level. 2 exams but drops lowest. Midterm and final - not cumulative! Basically teach yourself outside of class. Pop quizzes announced at 11pm night before. Lots of annoying little things (power points, LC q's, outlines, DSM, SI sessions, mastering bio). Offers lots of EC though!
Biology can be hard, but she made it easy to get a good grade. Several extra cred opportunities, dropped 1 test score, and allows notecards on some tests & quizzes. Homework assignment answers easily found on google. Grades based off of many hw assignments, quizzes, 4 tests, & participation pts. Lots of extra resources accessed on organized canvas
Very fun class taught by a very fun and good teacher. She is accessible out of class, and teaches well in lecture. In discussion, new material is taught so make sure to pay attention. If you enjoyed Dr. Pravosudova's Bio 190 class you will enjoy this class because they are structured identically.
Great professor. Offers many resources to learn outside of class. TA help is there if needed for anyone. Homework is semi-heavy, and tests stick to the material. Go to lectures because of quizzes and the lectures are important for participation questions. Overall, apply yourself to this class and it shouldn't be bad. She's a G would take again.
OK teacher on the surface, but her lectures are hard to follow because of her way of speaking and the fact that the class is so big. Her tests are INCREDIBLY convoluted. Questions are hard to interpret. Many concepts you're told to study are not on the tests while concepts not even mentioned in the study guide are on tests. But her TAs are awesome
Honestly she is a good professor. She really does want you to understand the material and will answer any questions. Make sure you go to the discussion every week because the TA goes over the material that was learned in class. The TA helps to answer any questions throughout the lectures too.
This class can be too much, there's Mastering: DSM, HW, in class LC. ECs are only 3-4pts. But make use of them. The lowest of test 1,3, or LC will be dropped (each are worth 50pts/20%). She is nice, so if you're choosing between her and Elena P. take Pamela instead. Same class structure but she's the nicer one. Lectures feels messy but it's there.
She does a good job presenting the material in such a way that it lines up with how the book does. Her tests are hard, but fair, though, there seems to be a lot for each of the 6 tests that she has in the semester. Be ready to memorize a lot of very specific information if you want to pass.
Professor and the class itself may seem a little intimidating however, she is super chill and wants her students to succeed! Discussion's are super important and the TA will go over anything you may be confused about. Make sure you go to class as it counts for LC points that can also substitute a test grade. The exams are hard so study!!!
This class was extremely fast paced from the jump & felt like I wasn't properly learning. It was super easy to get behind due to the class pacing. There are 4 open note tests and 2 major exams which are pretty difficult. My discussion group & the BIO help center literally saved my life. Extra credit saved my grade so take advantage of it.
Avoid if you can help it. I had this prof for both 190 and 300 and they were the worst classes I've taken at UNR.
Dr. Sandstrom is one of my favorite proffessors at UNR! She is so kind and always makes me laugh during her lectures. The class is challenging, but she also includes a lot of additional assignments to buffer your grade. As long as you attend the lecture/discussion, watch the videos, and participate in the lecutre, then you will get a solid grade!
Professor Sandstrom is an amazing teacher. Her class is challenging but she offers lots of extra credit and support. Using unstuck ai, ChatGPT, and the Bio help center really helped me stay on top of the fast pace and excel in this course.
Dr. Sandstrom is phenomenal. Although she goes fast during lectures, her class structure with LAs and MDGs gives you a lot of practice and support. The homework is light, but you need to read the textbook or watch the videos to get everything. She is so kind, understanding, and always wants to help you understand concepts.
Lectures are mandatory but super well thought out and clear, though she does go through them quickly. The homework load is a lot but each assignment has a clear purpose and does not feel like busy work. The discussion for this class is also super helpful. But be sure to stay organized as it adds up quickly and the exams require a lot of reviewing.
I love Dr. Sandstrom, she is amazing and you should take her. The discussion leaders are awesome too!
Pamela Sandstrom is an amazing professor. Students complain that her classes are hard, but the truth is that the material itself is hard. She gives everything you need to pass with a good grade as long as you stay on top of work. She is very friendly, and very forgiving if you miss an assignment. She is extremely kind and runs interesting lectures.
Dr Sandstrom is a very engaging and good professor overall! I love that she had personality and keeps everyone interested. 304 is harder than 300 but it was very interesting and discussion leaders were super helpful! Would recommend:)
She's a good lecturer, but her lectures only help if you do the homework/some preemptive studying beforehand. She assigns a lot of homework but all the homework is very helpful towards understanding the material. She gives a couple opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester, so take advantage of it. She's very kind during office hours.
Dr. Sandstrom is a great professor. May get off-topic during lecture, but usually sticks to the lecture content and provides in-class problems (working with the in-class LAs) which are the most helpful. I spent ~1 day going through the LC Q's + lecture powerpoints before tests and got an A. Pearson HW/Discussions are annoying but manageable.
Genetics is a hard course, however, Dr.Sandstrom does an amazing job in having a program that helps you succeed in this rigorous class. She cares for her students and their success and as long as you show up her office hours to ask questions on what you dont understand, she'll teach the material in different ways that could make sense to you.
What's so great about her class is not only her lectures are very throughout but she has discussion classes where it helps you boost your learning the material. Honestly it's only her class that I got greater than a C with my science and math classes lol. I would take her class again just for the lecture to be honest.
BIOL 304 was similar to BIOL 300 in some ways, but it went more into detail, which I really appreciated! I saw many of the topics brought up again in later courses, and having some base knowledge helped me succeed in those classes. This was my first upper division Biology course, and it ended up being one of my favorites.
Dr. Sandstrom is always incredible. I've had her for two different classes, BIOL 190 and BIOL 304, and she was great for both. She's a fast lecturer, but she has so much information to get through that she can't go any slower. She's so helpful and intelligent, and she hires great LAs and Discussion leaders, so if you don't get help, that's on you.
I love Dr. Sandstrom! She's so funny, and her lectures are engaging. Her tests are short and usually based on discussion worksheets, LC questions, or homework. There's not much homework given, but when she does give it, take advantage of it because it boosts your grade a bit.
Sandstrom is an amazing professor especially if this is your first biology class! Her class is set up so you see the material multiple times throughout the week and uses her lectures to wrap everything up rather than go in depth. She is very nice and provides you many resources! Really recommend taking her if you can!!
One of the best bio professors at UNR in my opinion. Class is straightforward, meet at lecture 2x a week and discussion 1x a week, both 50 min. 4 tests, weekly HW. If you don't like reading, she provides lecture videos that are pretty engaging. One tip I have to do well on exams is DO THE NOTE OUTLINES and GO TO THE BIOLOGY HELP CENTER. 10/10 :)
Professor Sandstrom is the first prof i have had that actually cares, and will work with you! Lecture points add up at the end a lot more than you think so make sure you attend. Lectures are very helpful with TA's around to also ensure material is understood as lectures are pretty full.
