She is a very cute and sweet person. There is a LOT of difficult reading for the class, but you can get by without doing most of it. The class ended up being kinda boring though.
very helpful and a great teacher
I am still not sure what to really thing about Prof. Smart. She seems so intelligent but her lectures jump all over. Her office looks the same way with books and papers strewn from one end to the other. I think she just needs more organization.
Great lady, but is really disorganized. Never puts paper topics/final ques up when she's suppose to. Lectures kinda long and boring winded but topics are interesting
Very unorganized and unclear. Never gets to the point, even after an hour of talking. Nice woman, but not much more.
very nice, helps if you go to office hours, lectures are sometimes out there. if you do the readings and listen in lecture..the paper and final wont be bad at all. i got a b+ and i didnt even read 2 of the books
She is the most unorganized person I ever met. It's impossible to follow her train of thought. She does not grade or give questions on time. Lectures are very unclear and jump around. She answers questions with more questions, NEVER getting to the point.
She's a nut job....she goes off on tangents and somehow managed to talk about time for 3 lectures. Class is boring and puts you to sleep, plus she doesnt grade any assignments until the last week of class, so you have no clue of how you're doing.
She's very nice person and I recommend going to her office hours but none of the papers were graded till the end so know idea where we stand . tests are fair. readings are not always necessary to do but are much more interesting than the lectures.
She was very helpful and approachable. She gave us the questions to the test before the test happened, which was very helpful. She goes off on some tangents, but focuses on the main points which are guaranteed to be the questions she asks on the tests.
So helpful and eager to facilitate your success. If you have a problem, see her in office hours, she is willing to put forth time to help you succeed if you take the time to go see her. Go to class and you can practically ignore the readings- but give them a once over before exams.
Great teacher! Really knows her stuff and is very helpful. Very fair in her grading and assignments are manageable. You can learn a lot from Prof. Smart!
The biggest idiot of all time. So stupid. She should not even be a professor. I don't know what type of knowledge she's coming in with, but she'll just babble while everyone sleeps during her class. Then she'll grade your stupidly formatted test on some type of unknown retarded scale. Stay away!
Ignore the last comment made. Smart is a wonderful teacher and a very fair grader. The key is to actually do the readings and pay attention in class. Otherwise you will end up making stupid comments like the last ignorant moron who left a bad rating.
very sweet professor, gives you exam questions a week in advance, helps keep the pressure off and by doing so I actually retained more information! great experience I recommand taking her class.
She's an excellent professor. She's always happy and a little spacy sometimes but she teaches theory very well and shows the best videos in class. The hour and a half lectures do get a little boribg but it's an easy A and good if you have any intrest in the social sciences.
Great professor. Very nice and very helpful. Tests were nice since she gave the questions out a week in advance, so i could actually prepare. some things in lecture are erraneous, but going to class helps a lot. the hour and a half class sucked, but the videos were pretty interesting.
she's an awesome professor. he's very helpful Both her upper level and lower level classes we easy. Just do the readings and the assignments. SHe explains things and answers quetions very helpful nice likes teaching and helpin her students take her course!
cant understand her
best professor ive met in bing! classes are easy as long as you really go to classes & really listen. you dont even need to do the readings much! wasnt used to her accent at first but if you really pay attention, you know that shes unwrapping everything for you. very helpful during office hours.
I seriously heart Prof. Smart. She's one of the better professors in Bing. Go to lecture and pay attention (not difficult she's very entertaining), you will do well. Her assignments were fun and relevent. Very personable, very willing to help. I HIGHLY recommend taking a class with her.
Super nice, and fairly easy workload. Lectures can be a little boring at times, but her niceness makes up for it.
This class is taught also as ARTH. Found it hard since I had not been introduced to some core idea of the class before. She is leniant to the undergraduate students though. I liked her because she was very attentive and willing to help. But I suggest that if your are not interested in art and the meanings behind collecting to avoid the class.
Pam Smart is my hero :)
Pam Smart is my hero too.
Pam Smart is super AWESOME.
Could have been better. Interesting material, but uninteresting prof.
Classes drag on forever and she has little control over the students. TA's grade tests so possible inconsistency with the grading. Over all class was okay but harder than all my upper level classes and it was a 100 level class
Dr. Smart was one of the best teachers for an intro class that I've ever had. if you talk to her one on one, she is more than happy to talk to you about any issue with the class you may have. although the readings are lengthy, there is not too much busy work and the material is very interesting and rewarding.
This class was the biggest waste of my time. Not only is it structured so that the same information is repeated to you verbatim in long readings, long lectures, and long discussions, but the information that you learn is useless. Everything is made into generalizations. Everything is subjective. BSers will do well.
Professor Smart is boring. She reads directly from her notes and repeats herself several times. She is lucky to fill a third of the lecture hall. The class has no real substance. You don't learn anything. It is not overly hard nor is it overly easy. There are better classes to take for the gen-ed. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
Whoever is saying dont take this class is apparently a freshman, & does not know about the other classes on this campus..This class is extremely easy..all you need to do is study before the test...SHE GIVES YOU 7 TEST QUESTIONS BEFORE THE TEST(including the final)AND USES 4 OF THEM..all you need to do is study the 7 questions & you can get an A
oh...and she is mad nice....and truly wants to help her students...it isnt the most interesting thing in the world...but its not that bad....she has a small accent, but its not even that bad
I think she is an excellent teacher, but I think the material covered in class could have been more interesting. She is easy to talk to and is always willing to help. She cares a lot about her students and has an excellent sense of humor. However, the class and her tests are too easy.
I hardly put any effort into this class and still ended with an A. Lecture can be interesting sometimes, but she sometimes forgets what to say and stutters. Easy class, though. So I think it was worth a little boredom
She is sooo boring....no use in going to class. Just three essays determines your grades. She doesnt give notes and she drones on and on about a topic. Take her for an easy A
She's pretty entertaining for the first few weeks, but the class material gets really boring really fast. She's really disorganized and half the time forgets what she's saying/ wanted to teach that day. Overall, the class is boring but bearable..kind of.
Her Anthro class is pretty boring. The class is somewhat hard even though you're given test questions prior to the exams. She's a nice woman though.
The class isn't that hard, but it is almost impossible to pay attention. It is really hard to follow the point she is trying to make but she does give you the test questions prior to class. be sure to elaborate on EVERYTHING because you get points off for the littlest details in your answers.
I. Love. Pam. Smart. She's just so great. She doesn't realize how funny she actually is, so her classes are priceless. She's really hardworking and really respectful, if you're the same to her she'll be the best professor you have. Doesn't spoonfeed work, but it's not terrible - TAs are great in office hours. A great, great lady. Highly recommended
great teacher, great class.
Compassionate, generous and witty.
Pamela Smart is my hero too. Has a perfect blend of wit and skepticism to go with really interesting material. She manages to take even mundane reading material and make it relevant, even enjoyable. Her lecture and coverage on Magic and Technology in photography was one of the best lectures I've sat through, period.
Pam Smart is great! Her classes are interesting if you do the reading. If you don't, you'll be lost and bored (and probably should go back to high school.) She's very nice and witty. Willing to help you out and clarify points if you ask. I recommend this class.
Lectures are very boring. But overall its a very easy class. Essays are simple and are not graded hard. You have to do the reading or else you'll be bored and lost in class. Had to force myself to go to class-so boring!
Professor Smart is a really good teacher. She states from the start that you must do the reading AND go to the lectures and I completely agree with her. If you do no read what she assigns the lecture will be useless and you will end up lost. She does a good job at explaining the text, overall it's a good class that you have to put some work into.
Professor Smart is great! She is hilarious most days, and offers help when needed. The course is easy if you do the readings. If not... you'll be lost and have difficulty doing well on essays. Overall, a fun and interesting course.
Just want to say, this was the best lecture I've ever been to- Pam Smart is amazing. SIT IN FRONT FOR HER LECTURE- she says the funniest things and she makes eye contact with you, and loves when you participate. If you don't sit in front... (there's a reason people call her boring- THEIR OWN FAULT for sitting in back, in the dark)
Professor Smart is not a good professor. Her lectures were hard to follow and boring (I even did all the reading). I went to TAs and her personally multiple times before essays were due, yet still did subpar even after I was told I had an A paper. When I went to see her she did not give me the time of day.
By far the most boring professor I have had in my college career. There is absolutely no point in going to class. The assignments are insane, it is almost impossible to squeeze out 5 pages, even if you read the material.
She is extremely disorganized and the class really suffered as a result. I was really interested in the course before taking it and I felt like I learn nothing. She is very hard to reach outside of the class and never answers emails.
Worst professor that I have ever had. She is very unclear about the assignments and is not helpful at all when it comes to the two main papers. She briefly goes over them but then assumes that we can pull 6 pages of out of an essay that, in reality, could only be, at most, 2 pages. Mumbles alot and has a very strong accent thats hard to understand!
I am surprised by the ratings. Prof. Smart is witty and her lectures are thought provoking, interesting and extremely relevant. The assignments are open ended and involve personal creativity as opposed to regurgitation. If you read and come to class you'll do fine Also, she is from New Zealand, not a foreign county. Her accent is clear.
She makes class very interesting, you would be a fool not to attend. There is minimal work (2 papers, 2 tests) and as long as you go to the lectures they are relatively easy. She also gives the test questions out ahead of time so you can prepare.
2 exams - questions given to students ahead of time & 2 papers- 5pages each. you need to do the reading and get notes from class so you can have enough info to complete reqs. she is so nice, class is easy! all you need to do is read and write what she says = A. day before test can ask questions, recommend!
Professor Smart was great! In class, shes witty, comical, and very passionate about her subject. She explained topics clearly and adequately. Outside of class, shes very accessible and eager to clear up issues. The class overall was very interesting, and Prof. Smart made me view the visual world from a completely new and refreshing perspective.
I wouldn't recommend this class for someone who just wants the A gen-ed requirement. I didn't do as well as I would have liked in this class. Your entire grade rides on 2 papers and 2 exams which are short answer so if you're not a good writer (like me) you're screwed. This class is hard if this is not your thing.
Definitely not an easy A. There's lots of readings that must be read eventually. She gives out the test questions beforehand, which is great. That was my key to success. I may not recommend this class if you are not interested in the topic. I have nothing bad to say about Professor Smart; she is very friendly.
Pam is disorganized and incredibly confusing. Expectations of students are unclear from start to finish and her lectures/discussions don't follow any clear course. In the end, I didn't feel that I had learned much of anything... which is sad because the material could have been interesting if it had been presented well.
Lectures are boring, and seemingly pointless, although I have not had a test yet so maybe the information is relevant. The Professor is disorganized, and speaks from notes but still takes forever to say anything, and often repeats herself. The class is pretty easy, but there has got to be a better way to learn the material.
Do not take to fulfill the A gen-ed. There are tons of readings that are long and boring. Lectures are painfully boring and the topics themselves are not interesting at all. There are only 4 grades(2 papers & 2 tests) which determine your grade. Prof. Smart rambles a little too much and will put you to sleep.
Very smart lady, and more importantly, interesting!
What else can I say about Professor Smart other than she teaches a really interesting class, and does a great job doing so. While she isn't the most organized human on the planet, her lectures are very interesting and enjoyable. She gives test questions out before the tests, which makes the emphasis on the class about the material, not about grades.
AWFUL professor. only get good grade if you reiterate what she blabbers about in class. not helpful at all and her lectures are the most boring thing ever.
She leaves all the work up to the TA's, which means your grade will depend upon their terrible judgment. She's a nice and smart woman, but the way she organizes her class and grading really screwed me.
She does make the effort to teach, but the information is useless except for a few interesting main points. 2 5-page papers and 2 cumulative written exams. Except for 3 books, the weekly reading is 10 pages. Aim to memorize the main point made for each reading. She'll get to that point, even if it takes her an hour and a half. Not recommended.
Know what she needs, you will be good.
She relies on TAs so much to the point that it becomes difficult to get in contact with her if the TA doesn't forward your email to her. Rambles on, content is boring and very unorganized. Would not recommend.
Absolutely awful professor. Completely killed my interest in anthropology with her droning lectures and horrible attitude towards students. You really can't ask for less. Stay away at all costs!
I took several classes with her and she was my adviser for my masters degree in art history. I thought her classes were great and she fantastic. I'm surprised by the low ratings as all the students I knew sincerely liked her.
She is horrible. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER. She was so passive aggressive and very antagonistic towards the class for the people didn't come to class every day even though she didn't take attendance. It created a very hostile learning environment. This is an ANTH class, not ARTH. Very easy but incredibly boring and annoying.
awful prof. Don`t take this course. Take somethng else instead....
Really, really bad professor. Awful at lecturing, treats students with hostility, and seems to be there for her own interests. As another person posted, I was really into Anthropology before I took her class, but really don't like it anymore due to this experience.
Pam can be very disorganized, and sometimes took it out on students when they couldn't perceive her unclear expectations, but I still felt like I learned a lot and that the class was a worthwhile experience. She gave me lots of good suggestions and feedback for my final paper!
A wonderfully quirky professor with a talent for expressing ideas in a fresh way. She really tries to engage her students and get a conversation going in class. Wants the best for her students and if you do the work, your efforts will be rewarded.
Professor Smart is soo nice and funny! I really liked her. The tests were very easy, you literally had to try to do poorly: she gives you the essay questions before the test. Prepare your answers and you will be fine. Plus she has a really cute new Zealand accent so that's fun.
Dr. Smart is a bit kooky but I've never met someone who knows more about museums (this class was Museum Studies). Sometimes she would go off on tangents, but usually would teach all the info she needed to. A reading or 2 every week, but not too much. 2 tests (5 questions that require less than a a page answers) and 2 short (3-5 pg) papers.
A really genuine person. Museum Studies was great and everyone liked her. She can be a little spastic but you can tell she really knows the material and wants you to do well.
This class, Global Artworlds, was exceptionally boring (only made even more boring by Professor Smart). I dropped it right before Add/Drop ended because I couldn't take it anymore. She seems like such a nice woman but her slow and slightly spastic teaching style couldn't keep me interested for an hour and a half. I don't recommend this class
Very disorganized and scatterbrained. You will get frustrated throughout the class but the work is extremely easy. 50% of your grade is one project you are only expected to work on in class.
All over the place, pretty disorganized, and lectures aren't clear in the slightest. It's an easy A if you show up and participate in the groupwork. Tests are easy, not worth a lot, and you can prepare in advance. If you love groupwork and unclear lectures that are little more than unhelpful statements strung together randomly, go for it.
Don't take her class. Complete waste of time.
Overall, very easy class and quite enjoyable. If you have a good group to work with, things are great! Prof Smart talks a lot, but she means well. She is not always clear about things, but she is pretty laid back.
Really nice style of teaching. Really wants to engage people in a discussion if you like learning from conversation! Quite self aware in her style and causes a laugh almost every class. The reading is a lot but it will make the class more enjoyable. And if you're lucky she will bring her dog in.
Professor Smart is a really caring and passionate professor. She really wants you to do well in her class. Just go to class and participate and she will like you. Her lectures can be kind of disjointed but otherwise she is great.
Professor Smart has been my favorite professor at Binghamton so far. She's very well versed in her topic and you can tell that she is extremely passionate about her research. She cares about students and wants you to do well, as long as you pull your own weight. Readings are fair, assignments are fair, and grading is fair.
My biggest issue with Professor Smart and the Materials Matter class overall is how she makes this big effort to say that the interdisciplinary applications between science and the humanities are so important, yet every time a science question comes up she has no idea what she's talking about. If she expects us to learn the science, she should too.
Professor Smart is so sweet and just wants her students to engage with the material and learn. There are occasional pop quizzes, but they are not hard as long as you skim the reading. There are two papers and two written exams for which the questions are given to prepare for in advance. Very easy to get an A as long as you show that you care!
One of the worst classes Ive ever taken, it was so boring and stupid. 90% of the lectures were guest lectures, the professor herself didnt even teach us anything. she never knew what she was talking about, she was always rambling on and on about nonsense and always let the class out late. grading also made no sense, it was unclear and terrible.
Professor Smart is just bad. I remember her lecture from years ago talking about the wall being purple. What? She's also condescending and really is just an ego trip for her to teach. As a now professional, I can say for sure that this class was absolutely 100% useless. I only hope this professor isn't tenured.
This class was advertised as a course about thought process when artists painted, we spoke about materials the whole semester. When it came to papers, prompts were very general, and when needing help I felt like I was being talked down to. Many lectures felt unnecessary, and her tone was very condescending when expressing my feelings of confusion.
I found Smart very condescending when asking simple questions and felt like I was spoken down to. The lab part is cool for the most part, and the guest lectures can be interesting. However, I found the course overall disjointed and more work than I was looking for. I wouldn't take this unless you're into art history or want to feel belittled.
I'm coming back to this 15 years later to say honestly: Pamela Smart is the worst professor I've ever taken a class from. A cavalier attitude with little to back it up with l.
This class is so easy for credit. There is a lot of reading but you don't have to do it because she covers it all in lecture! The concepts are very easy to grasp. There are 2 written papers and for the midterm/final she gives you the actual test questions in advance. She is a very lenient grader and is very passionate about what she is teaching.
Lectures were mandatory but there was very little homework. There were 2 papers and 2 tests that were all subjective writing and the grading was lenient. Tests require preparation to do well but if preparation is done then the test should be extremely easy. She likes to keep the room dim which made it difficult to stay awake at times.
I feel like Professor Smart made me enjoy this class much more than I initially thought I would've. I thought it would be boring and while it was at certain moments, I felt as though her lectures helped me understand the material more. Lectures are the key part of the course, and there's a big emphasis to pay attention and engage in them.
Pamela Smart is a nice person but looks down on her students. She has a very elitist tone when teaching. The class wasn't very difficult but if you do not have a passion for the subject it will be difficult to do any of the work.
She is EXTREMELY dyslexic and doesn't post her lecture notes so if you miss a single day, you're cooked. SOOOOOOOO BOOOORING
This lady is polite but clearly has a bias against white men.... of which I am... She loathed me and made sour faces every time I tried to participate in the lectures, which were tedious at best. Often times she would lose her train of thought mid sentence and would rattle on endlessly about inane theories. Avoid her terrible lectures at all cost
While the guest lectures can be interesting, the course felt disjointed overall. Professor Smart sometimes came across as condescending when answering simple questions. Unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
Pretty disjointed lectures, very reading heavy too. Assignments weren't too difficult, although grading did lean a little harsh.
actually the most deranged woman ive ever been around in my life. just dont take this class
