She's rude and does not want to help students! I emailed her several times about the quiz, she replied refusing to tell me when is the quiz and what material is it going to cover! Her quizzes are dumb and are sometimes based on the useless book, that will not help you at all. Avoid this rude woman.
Tien is very kind, however she should not be a teacher. Her lectures were her reading passages from the textbook. Save time and don't attend. On our first exam, she also decided to "experiment how long the test should be," so she purposely gave us a test we could not finish. Basically you were graded on who could write the fastest. Content was easy
Horrible
Confusing. Wants students to self teach. Her lectures were not consistent with the exams. She knowingly puts too many questions and makes it hard to finish.
AVOID her if you can! Many unnecessary rules!
She's not bad. She explains well, is focused and comprehensive. Homework isn't too bad, though there are many rules, and grading is harsh, but you get to drop 3/10 of your homeworks and have no effect.
Don't get me wrong, this class was really really hard and you have to work to get a good grade. However, Professor Tien is clear about her expectations, and has an excellent and deep understanding of the material and is a great teacher if you put in the work. She really cares about her students learning, and pushes them to their maximum potential.
Avoid this class if you can. Prof Tien doesn't take responsibility to prepare you for exams, is uncooperative and inflexible. Exams are too long and she makes a million rules that will cost you points. Attendance is taken in every lecture and discussion, often multiple times. The lectures are pretty dull and hard to follow.
Worst professor in GWU
Frankly, she is trying to teach, but the tests will surprise you a lot. With her rules and attendance requirements, you wont like her at all. She also wants you to read the textbook, which has a lot of things her slides and lectures dont cover.
Pao-Lin Tien has been the worst professor I have ever had. On our second midterm, 166 people got an F before the curve. That is indicative of a larger problem with the test and teaching method. It was attributed to students just not studying. Tien uses TopHat, a glitchy and irritating attendance program. 0/10
So many quizzes and assignments. Powerpoints are the summary of the textbook and homework is from someone else. She makes the exams super HARD-- the midterm exam has 11 pages, and she wants you to notice the trivial details of the question to get the correct answers. She has so many rules also, such as taking two attendances per lecture. AVOID her.
if you want a good grade, do not take her class. if you want to learn something, do not take her class. The whole class is using TopHat and the slides are exactly same as textbook. In the second midterm, about half of the class get a F grade before curve.
I loved her! Makes material easy to follow; clear and concise. Her explanations of models really help understand them. She's sweet and caring, and very enthusiastic about teaching. 8/10 recommend. I mean, she's pretty good for GWU.
She is incredibly inept at teaching. 5 out of 350+ students got an A before curve on a midterm, and over 160 failed. Not only that, when I complained about this online, she literally went to my Dean and tried to get me academically sanctioned. Horrible teacher and horrible person.
Professor Tien is a lovely person, but not the best for a basic econ class. Lectures were confusing and rushed. HW and especially tests are much harder and don't connect to in-class problems, so even if you study you may be unprepared. Memorize everything because you never know what will be on a test.
I think my problem with the class was that I am not passionate about econ, so I didn't care much. She puts a very good curve on exams and drops your worst quizzes and homeworks. You're able to miss about 7 classes, but I'd recommend missing as little as possible. Tien is not a terrible professor, her class can just be a tad bit confusing at times.
Tien is THE WORST professor I have ever had. As a straight A student who is genuinely interested in econ, her class made me miserable. When I went to office hours, she didn't even know how to solve her own homework problems and would have to look up the solutions. She is a completely unreasonable person and I hope you never have to put up with her.
Tests were very difficult
She's definitely not the worst professor I've had at GW, but she's pretty bad. If she were judged by her lectures alone, she would be a mediocre professor at best since they are sluggish readings of slides. The class isn't that hard, but the setup is incredibly frustrating. The midterms are absolutely insane, way too much content for 50 minutes.
DO NOT TAKE! Seems like a lovely teacher but cannot teach at all. Literally previous test more than half of the students got below a D. Her tests are practically impossible and hard to get an A in. Although curves are generous for those that do worse, it is not worth it.
Try not to take her, she is very nice and respectable but is very difficult to follow lectures. TAs go too fast, have accents and refuse to answer questions at her digression. Over half of the class got less than a C on her tests She does though give a lot of grades and large curves to those who need it but still very difficult and not worth it.
I would not wish her on my worst enemy. I don't understand how a professor could be so heartless and also terrible and their job. No matter how smart you are, you will do terribly in this class. For reference, 160 students got Fs on the 2nd midterm, 280 failed(D+ and below) total. That should happen in no class. She's smart but shouldn't teach.
Undoubtedly the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take her no matter what. If you need to take Econ wait another semester or more so its not with her or take it at community college over the summer. She has no idea how to run a class and teach. You could study for days and memorize as much as possible but she will find a way to make you fail
Reads directly from the slides. Unhelpful when asked questions. Tests are extremely hard. Once our final grade was posted on Banweb, the course immediately disappeared from Blackboard (where the assignment specific grades are), so you couldnt even see what grade you received on the final. I found this sketchy and bizarre.
Prof Then doesn't trust her students at all. In her class it feels like you are suffocated with MILLIONS of UNNECESSARY RULES. She has an unwelcoming attitude and her emails generally are mean. She deleted entire class from Blackboard and we can't see our final exam grades. TAs strictly follow her rules, which makes them unhelpful. Do not take!
*AVOID IF YOU CAN* Lectures taken directly from textbook. Homework/tests/quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and have little to do with information discussed in class. 166 of her 350+ students received a failing raw score on the midterm. Class was deleted from blackboard after final grades were posted, we cannot see out final exam grades.
If you do end up taking this class (please don't) DO NOT buy the textbook - its useless.
Contrary to what many students have said, Professor Tien was a truly wonderful professor. I took her for microeconomics, and I always left each lecture feeling like she did her job and more. She always gives examples and works them out on the board. She is approachable and helped me a lot. Her TAs also were the best resources and knew the content
She is definitely trying to be a good professor but clearly doesn't know how. Her lectures are straight from the textbook. She has lots of rules like taking attendance twice each lecture. The good thing is she drops your lowest quizzes and homeworks and the tests are curved a lot. Be prepared to do a lot of independent learning.
Weekly quizzes and homework. 2 ridiculous midterms and 1 whopper of a final. Shes nice, I guess, but dont expect her to change her style of bizarrely fast-paced unexplained lecturing. Exams dont test knowledge, they just test how perfectly you can regurgitate lectures. Worst Econ prof I had in college. Avoid and only take as last resort.
Absolutely inconsiderate of her students. She tries to be taken seriously, and sure, she evidently knows the material she teaches, but often comes off as brash, inpersonable and unyielding, and this does not translate well considering how tough Economics can be already. In short, steer clear if you can.
TIen is clearly polarizing, but I think she has an unfair reputation. Her lectures are dry but straightforward. Tests are hard and graded up to a B-/C+ median, but she's a tough grader, especially on essay q's where even small omissions can take off big points. Overall, I got through her class alright - it was tough, but not as bad as her RMP score
She does a decent job of teaching the class content. What makes her an awful professor is her method of testing. The midterm is a writing contest. She packs in so many things to complete that it's impossible for slower writers to finish. Whats the point of studying if you cant show for it? Got a C+ even though I knew how to solve everything on it
The material is dry and heavy. She assigns a lot of homework and the exams are mainly formula based. She does extra credit -- attendance and if you participate in discussions. I went to her office hours asking her to check something for my homework and she said it was correct, but later found out it was wrong and got points off.
Yes, her exams are tough and graded very harshly. But, she doesn't deserve a 1.7. She's very organized and you will actually learn in her class. She's also great to go to outside of class, whether for office hours or for help with my Econ major logistics, and she responds quickly to her email. Re. exams, there is a large curve too.
I am not sure why Professor Tien has such a low score. Maybe my standards were just low from seeing all these reviews, but I think she is a fair professor who makes lectures as interesting as she can. I am in no ways an econ person, but I found this class fairly interesting, and while the the tests were hard, they were not impossible by any means.
The syllabus/amount of different assignments can be really overwhelming. Tests, online hw, paper hw, quizzes, attendance, in class questions, discussion posts, etc. It's a lot. But she's a great prof who knows a lot and has clear standards. Not the easiest class, if you're bad at econ but put in effort it's not hard to do well, she drops low grades
Prof. Tien understands every Macro concept deeply. She is very patient and takes care of students a lot of students feel confused certain econ part. However, her lectures sometimes lack organization and it is hard for students to understand at first. Attend is mandatory in her lecture and discussion period.
Not the worst professor, but definitely not one of the best ones at GWU. I took her two years ago, which was her first time teaching here, and her lectures were a bit confusing. There were many homework assignments that were confusing and different from lectures, but the TA's helped. Exams were just like the homework but long.
Professor Tien is an EXCELLENT teacher! She gets a bad rep only because students who took her basic Econ class as a freshman didn't want to work hard for a good grade. Professor Tien explains content extremely well with concrete examples. Her exams are challenging but fair, and is very helpful during office hours.
She is very unclear about her homework, grades very harshly, as well as gives up to 7-8 hours of homework a week.
People give professor Tien a hard time because her lectures are very straight-to-the-point, no frills, but honestly I enjoyed her class because you always know what is expected from you and what you need to be doing, and as long as you do the homeworks and try you'll do well
She clearly favors some students and it shows in her subjective grading. Avoid at all costs.
The midterms and exams are way different from what is discussed in the class. Many assignments that helps you practice, but midterm and finals have maximum weight.
3 exams, each bearing more weight than the next. Several homework assignments and participation points help bolster grades. Prof Tien is extremely organized, clear about expectations, and conveys topics clearly. I've noticed people displace their dissatisfaction with her as a teacher, but the content is just hard. You're gonna have to work for it.
I'm honestly confused why prof. Tien has such a bad rating on here. Her online lectures were extremely organized and she is clear about her expectations. If you stay on top of the lecturess, go to the optional discussion sections, and do your homework, you can do well. She is also very helpful outside of class in office hours!
Professor Tien is not easy, but she's one of the best professors I have had at GW. I found that reading the textbook in addition to going to lecture was really necessary to do well, and there is a lot of homework so prepare for this to be one of your high priority classes. However, she is an incredibly competent teacher and you will learn a lot.
For asynchronous classes, it was very unclear on what we needed to know for the exams. She did not provide a clear outline of what we should study, and her curve is a joke. Many students would be doing well on the quizzes and lectures and end up doing poorly in the class because of the exams.
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS. I mean that with complete sincerity. The materials covered in the lectures are not on the quizzes and the material on the quizzes is not on the exams. In conclusion, you may think you studied and prepared well enough, covering all bases, but I can assure you you will still be blindsided. I regret everything.
She is a good teacher overall, however, she is not good enough for most of her students to do well on her exams and quizzes. Her lectures are engaging and she's clearly very passionate about the material, and you will learn a lot, you just won't be able to apply what you learned well enough to pass her quizzes and exams. proceed with caution ;)
To put it simply, this has to be the worst class I have taken in my entire life. First off, the class is asynchronous, with questions on the lecture due at midnight that day, so you don't even have time to ask questions. Lecture material is never on any of the quizzes, zero transparency in grading. It should be possible to give below a 1
Oof, I don't know where to begin. I was taking 5 classes this semester, but this class somehow took up all my thoughts and time. Her tests are incredibly difficult, with heavy time constraints and even more confusing questions. If you are a GWU student and must take intro macro, do not take with Prof. Tien! She definitely deserves her low rating.
Tien's class was not THAT bad. 2 hw & 1 quiz a week, so there's lots of practice, which helped me understand the concepts. She explains things well and the class is structured clearly. Go to discussion!! Study discussion problems. Midterms had concepts that we barely covered, which sucks. Curves so the class avg a C. Not the best, but not the worst
Class items cost a lot. If you have questions, you will need to make time OUTSIDE OF CLASS to get it answered or you can ask in the discussion section and won't get a response till the next week. Quite unprofessional and rude in personal emails to be frank. Will welcome questions with a smile but answer them with a "you should know this" attitude.
I loved Tien. Yes, she can be cold at time, but thats just her nature. She has clear expectations, great class structure, and is so knowledgeable. Drops 2 lowest quizzes and HW. You should get an 80-100 on the quizzes as long as you read textbook. Exams have some curveballs but she curves generously. Shes polarizing but Id take her again.
Honestly one of the hardest classes I've taken. Tough grader and the content is extremely heavy, if you don't have a good macro foundation you will almost definitely pass (let alone do well) for this class
She's actually super helpful. Economics is a hard class by itself. A lot of the students were non-Econ majors which was why they found it hard. You look at any Econ professor you will see students complain about their classes being hard. Professor Tien has clear expectations. Her exams are hard, but Econ generally is. Overall I like professor Tien
I had avoided Professor Tien after reading RMP reviews, but I'm so glad I took her this semester - she is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable, and really great, although a bit difficult, to get to know. This class can be difficult, but if you stick with it, it's great and you'll learn a ton. Would highly recommend Tien!
Tien is definitely a hard ass, but she makes her expectations clear up front. Homeworks worth 25% of grade and mostly completion graded. Her exams are crazy difficult, but come with a nice curve and cheat sheet. If you are prepared to put the work in, you will do fine. NOT the class to skip or neglect.
Prof. Tien is the best. I had her for 1012 and 2102, both great experiences. She's so smart, lectures are clear, and she is super helpful and nice during office hours. She's a tough grader on exams but always curves. She offers extra credit. You have to put a lot of work in this class, but you'll learn so much. Overall a great professor and person.
Econ is hard in general, but Tien is super strict and a very, VERY tough grader. Often, she would go over certain concepts / math problems for just half a class or so, but then they'd end up comprising a super large portion of the exam. She does give extra credit though & clearly cares about her students. If you show up you will learn a lot.
Tien is particular about how she wants assignments to be done, so it may feel like you are never meeting her standards. However, if you talk to her in office hours she is very nice and tries to help as best as she can. You might not get the A that you want, but you do learn a ton from her. Would definitely take her class again if I could.
Professor Tien has very high expectations of her students. She is very organized, which makes the class possible to pass, but everything else is brutal. For some reason, we are learning 30% of the class material in the last week of classes. She is also very rude and a stickler for rules. Did I learn a lot? Yes. Was it worth it No.
Despite this class being one of the hardest I've ever taken, Professor Tien made the material interesting and applicable. She has very high expectations but will support you in reaching them. She is thoughtful, answers questions effectively, and pushes her students to acquire a deeper understanding of the material than just for her exams. Worth it!
Professor Tien is an engaging lecturer that wants her students to succeed. She lays out her grading and expectations at the beginning of the semester, provides ample opportunities for extra credit, and holds office hours every week, including extra scheduled one-on-one office hours. If you want to learn, definitely take Professor Tien.
Tien is organized, but lectures can be confusing and doesn't always manage time well b/c sometimes she'll have to rush at the end... this class is A LOT of work. I would NOT recommend unless it is a requirement. Overwhelming amount of content. My most stressful class at GW. Not impossible to pass, but u will struggle if not naturally good at econ
Not an easy A, but if you take detailed lecture notes, do the extra credit assignments, and show up to office hours, you'll be able to earn a fair grade. She is incredibly organized and an amazing lecturer who will teach you much more macro than the other profs. She can be strict, but it's only so that we can improve our critical thinking skills.
Tien is absolutely awful! She crushes students' dreams by telling them they can't do this or that because "econ is so hard", when in reality she makes every class sound harder that it actually is. She overcomplicates everything and told me I cannot register for one class because I would fail. Took it anyway and aced it. Do better GW!
Professor Tien gets too much hate for no reason. She'll basically tell you how to do the homework if you go to office hours, which are held online at night. She loves to get to know her students and connect with them because she really wants to see them succeed. The tests are pretty hard but she grades reasonably and gives a generous curve.
Professor Tien is way over-hated. She is very organized and provides a clear schedule of what is due well in advance. There are 2 midterms and a final, and her tests are pretty hard, but fair. This isn't an easy course and she can be a bit strict with grading at times but she's a good lecturer and clearly wants her students to learn and understand.
Not sure what she did in the past to get so many 1s, but she doesn't deserve it. Pretty fair grading and much easier than intermed micro. Only annoying thing is she doesn't release hw or exam answers after they're graded, so it's harder to study from them. All assignments and exams are reasonable.
Professor Tien is very punctual and very organized. She hawks over the class and is dedicated to going over the top. With that being said Tien only like things being a certain way... and that is her way. She wants you to show up to every office hour otherwise good luck getting a good grade in the class.
Hard class but you definitely get out what you put in. Tien is very organized and eager to help if you ask. She has some strict rules but is very clear about them. Exams are hard and she is a tough grader, but there is a curve. HW and extra credit are an easy way to bump grade. Learned a lot and she is a great prof but it was stressful at times.
Amazing professor who cares about her student's success and is very passionate about the material. She is very knowledgeable and gives previous exam questions as homework so students have a good understanding of what is expected and will be tested on. Overall hard class with lots of material but if you attend class and do the work it is not bad.
Very unorganized making the class much harder than it needs to be.
Prof purposely makes it hard to do well in class. She is only available for office hours 45 mins a week and never states clearly what is on quizzes and exams.
Professor Tien may be the rudest and least self-aware teacher I've ever had. Her tests are 2 hours worth of really difficult material crammed into 1 hour, and her lectures are extremely quick and dense, making it hard to absorb. Everything will always be your fault, no matter how hard you work or study, and she can do no wrong. Avoid at all costs.
She may be a great person, but she is the worst professor EVER. She is insulting and passive-aggressive and does not try to be accessible to her students. She is also extremely rude in her emails, and no one that I know enjoys this class. There are 2 midterms and 1 final, she does not offer a study guide, only a review guide that we already have.
I don't understand the hate she gets. She's a perfectly fine econ professor. In my opinion, the students in her lecture are some of the most disrespectful I've seen, which is probably why she has a reputation as passive aggressive. I also don't buy that she is disorganized, all assignments for the week can be easily found on Blackboard.
Professor Tien's course is demanding due to her lack of support and passive-aggressive demeanor, which discourages seeking help. Her unstructured exams and absence of study guides leave students unprepared. If you're not ready to teach yourself the material, consider avoiding this course to minimize frustration and improve your learning experience.
GW's econ department is notoriously weak so I think some of these reviews are overly harsh. Prof Tien isn't the best but if you go to class and try you'll come out fine. 3 tests, weekly homework, and quizzes. Main complaint is grading. Asked TA why I got points off on a midterm and was told if you use the wrong wording you get 0 credit. Just FYI.
Test are hard, discussion section is mind melting, but she herself is awesome
Does not do a good job of teaching content, makes it unnecessarily difficult, and puts too much reliance on the TA's in the discussion sessions to teach the content meant to be covered in class.
Don't take. She's so rude, tests are hard, and there's no student support
This will not be your favorite class that you take, however I don't think it has necessarily been horrible. She is passive aggressive and cold at times towards the lecture as a whole but she is very accommodating in office hours. I have had no problems absorbing the material whatsoever. Grade breakdown is very fair (between quizzes/hw/exams/etc.).
Lowkey passive-aggressive, rushes through the lectures just to complete the material not actually teach, puts too much pressure on the TAs in the discussion sections to actually teach the content, but she curves heavily, grading is fair, content is just extremely difficult
Wasn't gonna write on of these but after that final, please please please avoid. She makes her tests so hard and on the most random stuff. Please just take macro elsewhere and transfer the credit.
Prof. Tien's class is very difficult, be prepared to stay on top of your work! She's quite organized making weekly expectations/tasks clear, and the weekly quizzes keep you on top of the work. She curves heavily (which is good but required or else we'd all fail), and her grading is very strict. She's not clear abt test expectations also :\
Just avoid. Taught myself most of the material from the textbook which is so much more helpful than she ever was. Also she was so rude all the time. Like if you can't teach at least don't be rude too... smh.
Tien is one of the best professors I have had at GWU. She is extremely well informed and actually cares about whether or not you do well. Some kids think she is condescending, but generally if she says that you are doing something the wrong way its because you actually are, not because she wants you to feel bad. All in all a great professor.
It's a hard class and you have to work very hard to get the grade you want but in the end it will all go alright if you do that. She gives extra credit, participation ,and she is organized.
I would not take Econ at GW. The professor's slides went by quickly and were hard to follow. She did not give us practice tests and barely gave us practice problems even when asked. She was unaccommodating and honestly a bit rude to her students. She did not care about personal issues, citing her syllabus. I dropped my minor after this class.
Difficult class but learned a lot of important info!
Econ is generally hard if you're just taking it for the requirement. Prof Tien covers a lot material very briefly and the TAs aren't much help so expect to teach and practice a lot of the topics yourself. Exams are curved so the average is a C+ but don't pass up on the extra credit opportunities since they do end up helping your final grade a lot.
She genuinely cares about your learning and was very kind and helpful throughout the semester. The class is definitely tough but as long as you put in the time and go to office hours she'll make an effort to help you. While she moves fast in lecture, she'll walk you through the material (e.g. HW) in office hours.
If I had $1 for every time I wanted to end it... Exams are far more difficult than what is taught in lectures. Midterm #1 was easy enough, but she didn't like her students getting decent grades, so she tortured us for #2. Talks about a whole lot of nothing for an hour and a half and yaps about her being sick for the whole semester. Be warned.
STUDENT BE WARNED! Even though I did well in the course, it is mostly because of self-teaching. Pao-lin Tien was undoubtedly the worst professor that I have ever encountered in my entire life. At best, she is incredibly rude and has super disorganized slides, causing students to only feel confused. Literally choose any other econ professor!
Like some already mentioned, I only got a decent grade in the class because I taught myself all the material. Her lectures were difficult to follow because she would get sidetracked with other details. From my experience, Prof. Tien's passive-aggressive attitude was exacerbated by the disrespectful behavior of some people in my class.
If you are an econ major, ignore the negative reviews. She is an amazing professor and these bad reviews are coming from IA majors who don't try in intro. 2102 is a super hard class but she makes all expectations so clear and she has some of the best office hours I have ever been to. She really wants you to succeed if you care
The worst professor at all!!!!!!!!! DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!(IF U WANT A) If you decide to take her class be ready to every week quiz in the discussion section, and tons of hw. Also the final and 2 midterms are extremely hard! Most of the stuffs on the exams, she didn't even taught us in the class…ESPECIALLY!!! SHE'S EXTREMELY RUDE TO STUDENT!!!
Genuinely one of the best professors I've ever had. If you pay attention during lectures and work hard, you're all set. Professor Tien wants you to understand the intuition behind all the macroeconomic concepts, and she explains them in super simple terms that just click in your brain to make sure you do well. I couldn't recommend her more!
This class (ECON 2102) is going to be hard no matter what, and you will fail if you do not keep up with the course schedule no matter who you take it with, so choose professor Tien. Professor Tien cares a lot about her students and truly wants them to succeed, she explains well and gives a reasonable amount of extra credit. So take 2102 with her!
SO messed up, professor!!! will never take again in my life.
The professor is very hard! Be careful, forget about GPA, this will bring it down 2000% .......
Couldn't stand her by the end of the course. Quizzes essentially designed for students to lose points. Cold, uncaring, at times disorganized and can be an arbitrarily harsh grader.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Lectures are taught very quickly. I spent hours re-watching lectures just to understand what was going on. That being said, Prof Tien has a lot of extra credit and office hours. She'll help you with homework assignments during office hours if you ask.
Personally loved her, she is very intimidating yes, but she will see right through you if you are a kiss ass. She truly does want you to succeed and her office hours are superrrr helpful. You just have to put in effort since this is an objectively hard class in terms of content.
Tien is a tough and rough grader, but her teaching is amazing. Lectures are concise. Responds to emails timely. Office hours are EXTREMELY helpful. Posts lectures online. Participate in class. She is clear about her expectations and doesn't take bs. Ignore the bad reviews as they're from Elliott kids who don't try. You'll definitely learn a lot
This is a very difficult course. However, Professor Tien is a skilled lecturer and you will understand the concepts if you pay attention. Her exams are challenging, with medians often in the 50s, but get curved to a median of C+, making it manageable. She is very old-school and is not a very lenient professor, but you will learn lots from her class
Definitely a tough grader and it's hard (but not impossible) to get an A in the class. If you pay attention in class, take advantage of her many extra credit opportunities, and show interest in the topic, it should be easy to get a B+ or an A-. She gives you all the resources you need to succeed, it's only a matter of taking advantage of them.
Tien is on top of her stuff. That's the best way I can summarize her style. She's put together and analytical. She teaches economics in a very logical, step-by-step manner---if you pay attention during lecture, you will learn well. She's well-organized and very clear about grading criteria and expectations. I don't understand any rating below a 4.
