Paolo ROCKS! This was his first semester teaching and he made it so easy. Open notes for EVERYTHING, he posts his powerpoints online and you can bring them to tests and quizzed. Takes lots of Q&A's before the quiz. Assigns Homework, you do not HAVE to do it. 2 Tests and 4 quizzes all semester. Final day allows you to retake the tests to better grad
Paolo is the best. This is a class the everyone dreads. It normally has like a 40% dropout rate. I hate math and I've never taken calc before this, and it was so smooth and easy. Open notes for all the quizzes and tests. You can even use the old tests as notes. He posts his notes and you can use them and the book on the tests. Easy A.
He is Amaizing. Open notes on quizzes and tests...but even if it wasnt he is very clear when he teaches. Very helpful and understanding. he is funny too.
Paolo is a funny guy who cares about his students. Math is a lame and tedious subject but he made it fun. One of the best VCU has to offer. Do yourself a favor, and take this class!
This professor is awesome and makes the class alot easier! Take him!
Paolo Catasti is by far the best Professor I've had thus far and one of the bests VCU has to offer. He's passionate about teaching and genuinely cars about his students. Exams are difficult, he only tests you on material he has already taught. If you remotely try, you will do well. I highly recommend him. He has an AMAZING sense of humor too!
I got an A in this class by coming every day, taking thorough notes, and doing all the HW. I never once studied for a test or quiz. If you take notes you are set. Very funny professor, jokes most of the students and makes math actually fun to learn.
This professor is extremely helpful and he is a very fun and interesting teacher to be around. Easy A for sure.
I don't do these things at all, but making an exception because I think people should know... Might sound like an echo, but you can tell the professor truly cares about subject matter and students, not just collecting another paycheck. Professor Catasi made the class a pleasure to attend, he is an asset to VCU...
THE BEST ! take him for sure !!
Probably the best professor I've had at VCU. I'm not a math person at all but prof. Catasti makes the subject easy to understand and even interesting. Exams are difficult but quizzes are just like hw problems. Final is optional but helps if your grade is on the cusp. Don't need textbook, save some money. Highly recommend Catasti, he's great!
Paolo is an amazing individual, he is passionate about math, with the understanding not alot of the students are so he explains things with realworld applications/definitions so that we can better understand and grasp the material. test and quizzes u can use notes and the optional finals are great for boosting your grade if you want!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! makes math fun and is very easy. pay attention and do the homework and you will do fine. Easy A
He teaches the material well. His Quizzes are easy for the most part. HIS TEST ARE NOTHING LIKE ANYTHING SHOWN IN CLASS. They will challenge you. He hates men too. If your girl you will get a lot of attention.
Catasti lectures without really explaining what he is talking about, but if you go to his office he will help you until you understand. He hates cell phones, don't text in his class or he WILL call you out. The exams are much harder than the quizzes. Buy mystatlab. Overall, he's a good professor, but definitely not the easiest.
Clearly the best teacher at VCU. Extremely dedicated, helpful, compassionate, inspiring, and sexy.
I took calculus in High School & thought MGMT 212 would be a breeze but I was wrong. You have to work for your A. His quizzes are easy, but the tests are hard. It's a real world type of class. He's extremely helpful, if you go to office hours! Do homework problems as practice for the test! Heads up: he likes to joke around a lot & might pick on you
his class is overall a good experience. You have only 2 exams, 4 quizzes and homework and attendance that make up your grade. The quizzes in his class were harder than his exams. Overall i think if you put in time you'll get a B but extra hardwork will get you that A
I would definitely recommend him. He does a good job of explaining the material. The quizzes are open notes and multiple choice, but still prepare for them or you will fail them. The test are 1 page cheat sheet and short answer, I found them to be the same level of difficulty as the quizzes. The final is optional.
Great professor! Really TEACHES his classes and wants you to learn the material. Tough class though, you really have to work at it!! No book use, just CourseCompass.
This guy rocks! I took a 5 week stats class, and he made it pretty bearable. The homework was a little much, but it was only a 5 week class. Buy MyStatLab! It will help more than anything! He is really cool, and funny. I got a B and I didnt even feel I worked that hard for it.
As an older student, I found his teaching and requirements not fair to those of us who work. I travel for a living and his manditory attendance rule made this class the worst. He is also not a very understanding teacher and spends too much time flirting with young girls. Unless you can be at all classes, don't take him.
Good teacher, class wasn't so bad
By far the best math professor at VCU. His accent is hard to grasp at first but after a couple classes you get used to it. His grading scale isn't conventional but if you do all HW and attend all classes it helps. Take him over stith-willis, kellet, really anyone at VCU. Paolo is the MAN!
If you are not a Maths person, the material is quite hard, not easy to grasp. His two trials test, attendance and online homework make it fair for students. You dont have to be in class, every session to get the material tough. But you NEED to study !
If you go to class and are a good student/do all of your assignments and make an effort he will notice and you will do well. Be respectful and work for your grade, that's about it.
Prof. Catasti is the man. As long as you do the homework, attend class, and have a sense of humor you will do great. Most of the material he teaches is difficult so you have to pay attention but hey that should probably go for any class you take. Oh and dont use your cell phone in class HE WILL SMASH IT jk....YOUR THE MAN CATASTI
MGMT 301 winter session, 11 days! Take Prof Catasti whenever you can! He is clear and helpful for tough classes, will help you understand the concepts and do well, in exchange: expects you to pay attention, & do the homework. Math require's effort vs other classes. Grading is very fair. Your best opp. to get the material & pass is w/ Catasti
Great Teacher. No cell phone or laptop use. And attendance and homework are graded and mandatory. However, that helps your grade alot. Also an A is a 90, a B is a 75 a C is a 60 d passing is a 50. No book use only an online homework program. Easy B.
Class started out not so tough. The material does get harder but his teaching method was not conducive to my learning at all. He is not approachable if you ever had an issue or had to miss class. He is rude and arrogant. Try your luck with another professor.
Does take attendance. The subject is kind of hard but if you keep up and pay attention you'll be okay. He's pretty helpful in class and pleasant. Homework is all online which makes it easy and you can use it to study. Don't need the book. Tests are fine if you understand the subject and study.
At first his teaching style worried me because it felt like he assumed that everyone had a lot of mathematic pre-knowledge which I did not. However once you get used to him and start asking good questions things get easier. I can also personally vouch for the fact that he takes your effort to be a good student into account when it comes to grading.
Test are too hard. I see why he gives an trial test. SMH.
Great overall teacher. Quizzes are easy if you take good notes and prepare slightly. Tests can be viewed as difficult if you don't study and prepare. Take good notes and you will pass easily. Cheat sheets for quizzes and tests. Easy B if you spend some time studying and Easy A if you really sit down and review.
Paolo is a great teacher and does a good job at explaining the materal, but his quizzes and tests are unbearable and they make you feel as though you haven't learned anything or studied at all. Attendance mandatory. No cell phones, laptops, or other electronics in class. Cool guy but I would take this class with another teacher if at all possible.
I hate math but he is def a good teacher. He has a great grading scale that literally helps everyone pass if they WANT to. You have to study and listen during lectures. No cell phones. Cheat sheet can be used on tests and quizzes are open notes/book. Awesome teacher, I am taking him for 302 as well! take him
Very engaging teacher for a math class. If you care about your grade you will do well. Participate in class, and it's fun. Great/entertaining teacher who actually cares that his class understands the material!
hes test are super hard and he quiz.don't take him.
He assumes students know it all after each hw assignment. He quickly reviews and moves on to new material making learning that much more difficult. He is strict on attendance and can be rude in class. Overall, his quizzes and tests are extremely difficult and he doesn't go over enough materials to properly prepare students for them.
BEST STAT TEACHER AT VCU. Definitely take this professor. He makes the class enjoyable and the material easy to learn. The quizzes and tests aren't difficult because he makes it easy but that doesn't mean you don't have to study. Overall a great teacher.
He is a nice guy & there is no graded homework, it's only there for your benefit. He uses attendance to boost your grade up. You can use open notes for the quizzes & you're allowed 1 page cheat sheet for the test. Even still, the quizzes & tests are still hard. He teaches very fast in lecture so you must do homework and study. Choose wisely
Best math teacher I've ever had! Go to class and participate and you're golden. Attendance boosts your grade, and he attempts to make the class engaging and actually knows students' names. 4 quizzes- open note. 2 tests- 1 page cheat sheet. Optional HW. If you put in a good effort you can pass this class with a good grade
You HAVE to show up to class to pass but he's very entertaining and funny. There is mandatory attendance that is worth 50% of your grade. Homework is optional and ungraded. Exams and quizzes are hard, but if you READ THE TEXTBOOK and DO THE HOMEWORK, it is an easy B to an A. I'm terrible at math and stat is hard but I managed to get an A somehow
Worst professor I've had so far. Catasti makes the tests super hard and complicated. I attended every class, did ALL homework and invested so much of my time and put forth all my effort into this class and was 1 point away from the next letter grade and he refused to bump me up (even though he told the class he would, unless he didnt like you)
One of the best professors at VCU. Very sharp, he will catch you dozing off, so pay attention (it's worth it). He has an awesome Italian accent, easy to understand. Even though the course material is dryer than pinot grigio, Catasti is very expressive, you can tell he's really passionate. 10/10 would recommend. Show up to class. DO THE HOMEWORK.
If you're diligent and read all the assigned chapters, do all the homework and write down everything he says without having to rely on his whiteboard notes, you will do well in the class. Otherwise, you will miss a lot of important details and do poorly on his very difficult exams that are almost nothing like the homeworks.
1 assignment due each week, a quiz typically every 3-4 weeks. Group projects help boost your grade in case you struggle with quizzes. Attendance helps too. He makes cringey jokes and calls out students a lot for no reason, making class uncomfortable sometimes. Teaches way too fast, acts offended when you ask him to redo a problem. Took as elective.
He was a kind professor at the beginning of the semester, sarcastic and rude yes, but it got terribly worst at the end of the semester. He seemed as if he hated us or something, no idea why. This class is full self-learning, hell show you in class but then you have to figure it out on your own through practicing the homework.
He is very passionate about Analytics. He does go pretty fast in class because their is a lot of material to cover. Go to office hours. It is a difficult class, but manageable if you put in the time. Definitely a class to take to apply concepts to use outside of class. If you don't have a thick skin, he may not be the one to take.
This is the absolute worst professor I've ever had in college. He is condescending, rude, and treats students poorly. I have never went out of my way to rate a professor on this website, until I met this guy. His "quizzes" are really tests. He goes extremely fast in class. I am typically a B student and I am hanging to dear life for a C.
He is a passionate and communicable professor, but you need to avoid him if you are not a master of Statistics or Stat Major. If you don't have ability to read and understand 5 statistic statements in 1 minute, he will harass you that you are not paying attention. Yes. He will harass you and make fun of you without any word.
Good professor, I personally liked him and you can tell he cares about what he's teaching. Can be rude by calling out people (usually students who aren't paying attention) and putting on a show. Take good notes, ask questions, and stay out of his way and you'll do fine.
Paola is a spicy noodle. He will not stand for shenanigans, lateness, or you staring at your phone during his lectures. He's very temperamental some days. If you are a Business major taking this class as an elective like I did, avoid Business Analytics with Catatsi at all cost. I am an A student who will gladly take a C in this class.
Great professor who does not have much patients for students that do not care. He does go a bit fast at his lectures and he is a bit harsh, but if you show some effort you will be fine with at least a B. If you are often baked then you should not take this course because you will not be able to handle the material
This class is not the easiest, but if you follow along in class, do the homework, and ask for help if you need it, you will succeed and learn so much. Catasti can be a bit of a harsh professor as he doesn't put up with students that mess around and don't try, but he is intelligent and more than willing to help if you need it. Take him and try hard!
Terrible class. If you pay close attention you make pick up enough to make it by. He belittles his students and you feel discouraged to participate in class or ask a question. You have 4 quizzes and 2 tests that are not to similar to the reviews online.
Favorite professor in my 5 years at VCU, and math was always my subject of least interest. Had him for two courses and he was the only professor I'd say hi to on campus. He's funny and even though he had to crack down on me fkin around on the computer from time to time (ADHD and not math-focused like I said) we established a good rapport.
One of my favorite professors at VCU. This class is not easy by any means but if you attend and pay close attention in class, do homework, and ask questions you can easily get a B. He does move fast and I would say he isnt very PC and can be a jerk but he knows his stuff and is an awesome professor. Ive learned so much.
I dreaded this class and was expecting to struggle to pass. However, the professor provided many resources to help you learn the material. You have to take all the assignments serious and put forth effort. The professor is extremely helpful even late at night. You can tell he wants you to be successful.
This was the first time I ever withdraw from a class. I thought that I could study harder after reading all the comments about how hard he is (his course worked with my schedule better than Pamela) but I was wrong. I studied so much and so hard only to realize I couldn't pass the course. For the record, I have all A's in my other courses.
Honestly, STAY AWAY! Take anyone else. He is extremely rude to his students to the point where I don't even know why he is a professor. I felt discouraged to even ask questions in his class. He speeds through an example and just hopes that you catch on. The only reason I got through this class was because of the templates I made in SCMA 301.
BEWARE!!! I will never take this professor again. I did so well in SCMA 301 and was expecting to do the same in 302. He is awful, hard to follow, and expects that you just grasp the concepts after he shows one example. You can not review quizzes or tests which is important because they are nothing like the practices and homework. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
Hard class.
Worst professor in the dept. His hw and quizzes are nothing like the exam. Has "videos" on BB but don't expect to learn anything unless you study 5+ hrs a week. I joined the course late and he took off attendance pts for the first week I wasn't even enrolled in. He doesn't let you dispute rounding errors & overall he is not respected for a reason.
Look, if you don't study then you aren't going to pass. People are complaining that they had to study for hours... it's freaking college, not high school. This class was difficult, but Professor Catasti gives you literally all the information you need. He has a different sense of humor but that maybe Italian coming out of him. Just study!
Do not take him. He doesn't teach. You just watch him make excel tables that don't help with the test. Don't waste your money, take someone else.
Genuinely the WORST teacher I have ever had before. This guy does not teach anything. I had to teach MYSELF his entire class. All he does is do excel sheets during class that hardly help with the tests or the homework. I asked him multiple times for help, and he told me to watch the lecture recordings, after I told him 3+ times that I did. AVOID!!!
Professor Catasti is great. I took him for Business Statistics II. He's a hilarious person that really tries to make the lectures entertaining. Warning, the tests and quizzes are the only grades are done through blackboard in lockdown browser, but he walks you through specific examples that are exactly like it. If you do optional HW you willdo well
One of the best profs I've had! He teaches a difficult class but does a great job explaining things. Make sure you stay on top of the weekly assignments. You just watch a 40-60 minute YouTube lecture once a week and follow along in Excel. Plug in the numbers from the HW and you get an easy 100%. Quizes are more difficult but he's always available.
Catasti is a great professor! SCMA 302 is a very hard class but he makes it accessible IF you put in the time and effort from the beginning. This is not a class where you can study before an exam and get an A, you have to prepare and learn the entire semester AND do your due diligence with the case study and quiz data before the exams and quizzes.
Taking the summer asynchronous 6 wk version. If you're good at math/know Excel, it's reasonable. There are 3 deadlines for assignments each week (T/Thur/Sat) all at 7pm. He does optional Zoom reviews on Tues and Thurs after 7pm. Not loving the Saturday 7pm deadlines; seems arbitrary and if you have a life outside of VCU, can be harder to juggle.
He doesn't care about his students and their success in this class. Exams are hard you need to study a lot.
Taking this class again with someone else and currently have an A at the halfway point. Prof Catasti makes you earn your grade which I respect but at the same time he isn't very nice or easy to talk to and will take away points for things that shouldn't be as this class is hard enough as it is. For anyone who struggles with math like me stay away .
The worst person to take for math, he says one thing but does the complete opposite, not only that he doesn't give you enough time for the test. Additionally, they don't go along with the labs, practices, and homework when he says that they will be. Everything is excel based whether you're good or not.
He is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. It almost seems like he doesn't like to teach us. If you ask a question, he'll give you a sarcastic answer that wouldn't help you move forward. He teaches pretty fast and so many students had to learn the material themselves like me. At one point, I couldn't do it anymore so I withdrew.
I would stay away from him at all cost!! You can do great on the lab, practice and homework but for the tests and exams is nothing what you been doing. He expect you to make the charts so if you don't know how to create and filter the data then you're screwed. Basically he set you up for failure, the class average for one of the test was a 42%
By far the worse professor I've had at VCU. He has an attitude towards his students and will ask you why you aren't paying attention when you have a question about the material. Only class I ever had to drop, and prepare for 5 exams that will most likely make your grade. Avoid at all costs!
During class time when multiple students had asked him to slow down to explain things, he flat out said that he would not do that. He takes fifty percent off your exam score if you do not upload the excel file. This is reasonable but roughly 30% of the class was not able to do so and he did not care at all. Please avoid taking this man at all costs
Worst professor ever! Doesn't teach at all just goes over the previous assignment for class. Get chegg so you'll know how to do the assignments. His test is nothing like we did for the hw. The class average for the tests is not even close to a 50%. VCU needs to fire him! If you can try to take the class at a community college, it'll be a lot easier
Catasi is a solid professor just not my personal preference. 6 exams that are extremely short on time which makes it super stressful. Just do the extra homeworks and do decent on exams and you should be able to pass.
He doesn't teach, quizzes and exam are very hard. I wouldn't recommend taking him for scma 302. If you end up taking him, the one tip I can say is to pray because you'll get nothing higher than a C
Not a bad teacher, but the course is test-heavy so even with doing all the assignments, what decides your grade will be your performance on the tests and exams. There are 4 tests and 2 exams. Knowing your way around Excel is very helpful. His class is very structured and organized, so you'll have the same schedule each week.
Made an account just to say how much I disliked this professor. Tests do not match material taught in class, gives very vague answers on what exactly you should be doing. Avoid at all costs!
He is the worst professor I have ever taken. He literally does not care about anything or anyone. He gives so much homework and takes hours to complete it but his exams are totally different from the assignments he gives. So no matter how well you score on the assignments, The grade mostly based on his exams. AVOID HIS CLASS AT AT ALL COSTS...
This professor is legitimately the worst.Totally unhelpful. He would encourage us to ask questions and would simply tell us to look in our textbook for the answer. When we took quizzes in class, he would speak aloud to clarify questions while timing us. This would make it even more difficult. He expects everyone to just know how to use Excel. DONT!
This class was legitimately awful. He is not very helpful and gets lost and confused explaining his own questions. When he tries to explain the lab and practice assignments during class but it's hard to keep up with him showing how to work the problem. Good luck.
just don't, he is a really nice teacher, but it is too hard , i don't recommend at all. Unless you actually enjoy excel alot. homeworks and tests are totally different, tests are much harder than everything.
by far the worst professor and class I have ever taken. The amount of work and stress his class gives you is greater than all my other classes combined. He lies to you; he tells you the tests will be just like the homework when they are completely different. The class average is always failing grade which is proof of poor teaching.
DO NOT take this professor unless you have to. he is the absolute WORST. Paolo is very sassy and hates criticism. He disregards student feedback. The workload is absurd, you will have labs, homework, and practice assignments, each due weekly. He's a tough grader If you want to pass this class without suffering I suggest you find another professor.
Go to the review sessions, and take notes! He allows you a "cheat sheet" so reviewing the chapters he mentions is really the key to getting a good grade. You'll be good for the tests if you remember and understand how to do the homeworks. Take NOTES during the review sessions they're VERY similar to the tests
Professor Catasti is very polarizing. He's very no nonsense and sometimes can bit harsh in his delivery but means well. The class and content is difficult but if you truly learn how to fully optimize excel and watch all of his lecture videos it made the class much easier. Create a excel formula sheet for the exams before the test!
The information it self isn't too hard to understand if you get extra help from the campus center but this professor is no help. When students ask questions during lectures or he has to repeat himself he doesn't help you fully understand the problems. I wouldn't recommend taking his course if you're looking for an easy grade.
Professor Catasti is an overall good professor. He sometimes directly targets students for not paying attention/being on their phones, which I think isn't very respectful. Other than that, the class is very straightforward. Most of the course is based on Excel, HWs have multiple attempts, he reviews HW answers in class, and tests are just like HWs.
You really have to pay attention during class and take excel notes to do well on the tests. If you take him, show up to every single class and do all the homework assignments. You can practically fail every test/exam and still pass if you get 100% on attendance/hw. Also beware of asking simple/seemingly stupid questions cause he'll go off lol.
He will make you turn on your camera for online classes and will call you out if your camera is off even for a second, which is unfair to people's comfort with being shown on camera, and will not care if you have technical difficulties. Doesn't show compassion or sympathy whatsoever. terrible
You REALLY have to focus and copy everything he does during his excel lessons or you will fall behind. Other than that, Catasti's alright!
He strikes me as someone who is great at the task of statistics but not a good teacher at all. He has little patience for students, almost always a negative demeanor, and sometimes snarky remarks when questions are asked. Just keeping it real. Pick another professor!
I struggled throughout the entire semester in this class but because he saw I was putting in a clear effort he opened up assignments so I could pass the class. Communicate with him and let him know when you're confused or he's going too fast. I know he comes off as harsh but he's a great professor. Participate in class!!
Sent him an email asking for help regarding a classroom requirement that is needed. I reached out through email and he gave me attitude, granted I did email late at night, but I just found it disrespectful how he responded. Homework is heavy the first week, and makes you turn in assignments at the end of class instead of the end of the day.
Don't take this professor. The exams and tests do not follow the practices or homeworks. Everything is done in excel, which is really bad in regards to statistics.
Be prepared to drop hundreds of dollars in the first week of this class. Never show up late or he puts a zero in the grade book regardless of the reason (even personal family matters). First time I've ever actually been motivated to drop a class.
The absolute worst professor that I've ever had here at VCU. The most people I have ever seen drop a class in my time here as well. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
This professor is very rude, provides little to no positive/helpful feedback when emailing to ask a question about any assignment. Be ready to be blamed for doing everything wrong, when asking for help or when met with a conflict in an assignment.
He is very knowledgeable about his subject matter but very combative and takes questions as insults as "it means you weren't paying attention" you must take notes all the time and always be present in class as labs close after class is over and you will have to complete with a big penality
Absolutely miserable. Material is not difficult, however, the professor does NOT know how to work with others. The tests were so particular and partial credit is not given not matter if you did all the correct steps. Completely graded on accuracy, not understanding of the subject (tests had failing average). Legit don't bother with this professor.
This professor is very rude, he often makes snarky remarks when asked questions by students that he deems to be self-explanatory or things we should already know. He also does not grade on a curve under any circumstances, every test in my class had a failing average and he did not curve at all or even mention it. I would never recommend taking him.
I've literally seen him make people cry ON ZOOM, he doesn't like to answer questions and if u ask u will get a response like "maybe this isn't the class for u" or "i already went over that" He will call you out on anything if ur bathroom break is too long, if u itch ur eye, if ur outfit is weird, disrespectful
Dr. Catasti was a great professor in my opinion. He is very strict, but he does the assignments with you in class. If you remember the formulas and adopt the Excel tips he gives you, you will finish with an A in the class. He roasts you if you can't listen to simple instructions but I had a great time in his class because it came very easy.
Very rude, snarky comments, got annoyed at students asking questions. Would get angry at students missing class even if they were legitimately sick. Class averaged an F for almost every test/exam.
Be ready to be roasted by Professor Catasti if you can't follow his strict teaching style. But if you put in the effort, use the Excel tips and unstuck study for study prep, you can nail this class. Tough, but rewarding.
