Great teacher! Loved every chance I got to be in class! He helped me change my life and I suggest him to anyone wanting a very inspirational and inspiring teacher. I would give him a 6 if that was an option! His lectures are the best and he is very engaging. There was never a bad moment in this class! If you are considering anyone else, don't!!
Hands down best teacher I have ever had. This is the easiest teacher that I have ever had! You don't even have to show up to class and you will receive an A. Also Homework does not matter either if you show up the first day your final grade will be an A. His breath does smell like he ate some smelly pizza but you only gotta see him once.
He doesn't understand he's at a community college now that hosts high school juniors and seniors.
Absolutely hated this class. Unless you want to sit and listen to him talk for 2 hours straight don't take this class. Super boring and did not learn anything. Also is not a easy A. He gives a 10-11 research paper that his instructions are super vague. Also he takes forever to grade papers.
He means well. His lectures tend to be boring but he tries to engage the class by asking students questions, especially if he notices you aren't listening. Lot's of reading. This quarter the textbook was 100% online which was difficult for me. Would probably be a good class/better professor if I was more interested in government and politics.
Long boring lectures & too focused on engaging the class that he runs out of class time. Also super unorganized in canvas. I took an in-class class specifically to not have to get confused with canvas but nope, still gotta use canvas.
Dr. Hoon is my favorite Spscc instuctor. At the beginning of the quarter he was a bit nervous and his delivery suffered, he gained steam quickly and finished strong. The best quality he has is his ability to listen to his students and adapt . He let's the discussion go where may. Is not an arrogant blowhard.
long boring lectures. Doesn't have many in-class interactions. Sitting in the front row? make sure you're ready to get spit on. Also, 10-11 research paper is due by end of the quarter. yikes! Definitely have to work hard for an A.
He lectures for way to long, he wastes so much time asking questions, we watched the same video 3 TIMES. He does not use clear grading criteria for many assignments, half the class doesn't get grades. Anytime you ask for help he will tell you to see him after class.
Very repetitive. Goes over same topics multiple times. Doesn't teach well, instead basically just goes over the textbook for the entire period. Fails to make class interesting, gets boring quickly. Assigned work on three papers at once, due in the same week. To give you an example of his teaching style, we watched the same 20 minute video 6 times.
Parakh is a great instructor and I really enjoyed the class. There is A LOT of writing so if you want to take this class be prepared for several research papers. I did not feel too overwhelmed by these assignments because we knew about them from the beginning of the quarter. I learned a lot. Good prep class for University work!
This professor gives the most work I have EVER had at a community college. I do not recommend taking his class if you are not ready to write A LOT of papers that are graded harshly. I wrote longer and more essays in his class than in my English class.
He only gave a couple assignments which would be a couple of small assignments, and mostly the midterms and final papers. He gives no grading rubric but grades hard without giving explanation, and grades last minute. English/Writing is very easy for me so it is not just me. Very kind and understanding, but unorganized and confusing course.
This class will prepare you for University level writing. Not for the faint of heart if you don't like research papers. You will be given plenty of time in advance to start working on them
Two hours of going over the material from the text book. It gets boring really fast. He assigned two 5 page papers at once due in the same week. You really need to work hard in this class to do well. But, he is a really nice and understanding professor. If you're having issues and you talk to him about it, he will cut you a little slack.
This class is definitely not for those people who are seeking an easy A. The textbook work is easy but the most difficult part of the class are the papers and the lectures. He does assign many discussions and additional readings so if you dont enjoy writing or reading, this isnt the class for you. Professor Hoon is a really nice guy overall.
This has been one of the worst classes that I have taken at this college. I have never seen such a horrible use of class time. We are given readings from the online textbook the night before, only to come into class and have the same points stated again, and again. His grading process is unclear. Great person, but a terrible teacher. Good Luck.
I hated this class. He assigned very large assignments online over the weekends with vague requirements without ever addressing them in class, while already assigning large readings to complete. He spends the entire class lecturing what youve already read in the textbook. Youll never know your grade because he will take forever to submit it.
Class requires a lot of readings and discussions so be ready to read and write. Prof. Hoon is a little disorganized sometimes but that's because the topic is so current. Peer interaction is useful.
Theres lot of online reading and note taking needed. He assigns big projects online and doesnt further explain them in class. Poor time management and feels like we dont finish the lesson we needed to. He does offer outlined notes for everyone for each of his lectures. He answers his emails through canvas in a good amount of time.
Online textbook is easy to read, and questions in the textbook are the same. Discussion forum is interesting, but can take a while to complete. Professor is unorganized. We only had two different kinds of assignments this quarter (discussions/chapter reading?ions), and the due dates for these were completely inconsistent. Would not take again.
The textbook is online and simple to use. The book is fairly expensive at around $60-$80 so be aware of that. The professor is incredibly unorganized. I took this class fully online and noticed that random assignments would pop up two days before they were due. These assignments would be long and extremely time-consuming. Not a good teacher at all.
He seems to get lost most of the time when speaking to the class. He has some quirks with his repeated phrases and such but overall kind of mediocre. I've sent him messages that weren't answered. When I went to get help outside of class I was given very vague help. He doesn't grade until after the course is over and he never gave back my tests.
Horrible. It was easy to do the readings assigned on the web text but he hasnt graded ANY of my papers for the whole quarter. I have emailed him 5 TIMES and HE always says I will be getting to them soon when he finally graded my papers a month later, I realized he gave 5 of my papers the same grade. HE DIDNT EVEN READ THEM!!! MAD STUDENT!!
He doesn't seem to have figured out how to grade papers. Due dates are inconsistent. Often he will surprise you with a last minute assignment that he doesn't mention in class. His lectures were passionate but dull. He is overbearing with exactly how assignments should be done. Most of his papers are full of spelling errors. Don't take his class.
I literally didnt learn anything from the class. Homework and textbook was really easy. I got the same grades on all my papers. Discussion posts matter, but dont stress out about it, he doesnt read. The downside is that it doesnt matter how good they are he will still take points off. HE DOESNT GIVE FEEDBACK OR RUBRICS. This class was a joke.
Hoon was a fine teacher. His online class was a breeze. However, I had 5 assignments ungraded when grades were due. 4 discussions and my final exam. I emailed him about it because it would boost my grade to have them put in but he never replied. I might take it to the dean.
He's a strict grader, but you learn a lot in this class. He really cares about what he's teaching. He can be funny; and he is also very honest. I enjoyed his teaching style.
This class was a joke, completely unorganized. Hands out papers to help us take notes and then doesnt get to half of the topics. He is very knowledgeable but his thoughts are very scattered. Final and midterm were 5 "short answer questions", which really means 8-10 sentences each. The final is a eight page paper. He will take away your phone btw.
Too much homework. 1st day he gave a huge packet. He waits 10:00 pm the night hw is assigned & will not easily reply to emails. super confusing and calls you out to restate what others said so pay attention. Do NOT take class. He won't even inform you on what the homework is, if there is any homework, or when it is due. Its a waste of money.
Incredibly confusing, requirements and expectations unclear, never available when I need him and he never answers his email. He expects us to know what he wants from us and gets upset if we don't deliver. Numerous problems with changing dates for assignment and not setting up peer review correctly. Overall poor communication skills
Don't take him! At least not his online course. He seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't know what he's doing. He's unnecessarily changed my grades so many times and at the beginning of the quarter he never responded to me. He leaves grading to the last minute, and as of right now, has disabled grades. I have no idea what I have. Don't take him!
I am about to graduate and this was the worst professor I have had in my college career thus far. There were lots of things ungraded are quarter long that he didnt grade until the last second. I had no clue what my grade was. Zero feedback on assignments. Unresponsive to emails. Will preach from the mountain tops to not take this Professor.
Hoon is a smart man who is confident is his field. However, he doesn't seem to know how he wants to convey information to the class. His lectures are all over the place, and board notes are near impossible to read. He did not respond to the majority of my emails/comments and takes his course to seriously. He is not strict, his style is just clumsy.
This course had twice as many assignments as the typical online course. Assignment instructions often misstated requirements. Aside from auto-graded assignments, nothing was graded until after the midterm, so students had no time to reflect on their work and improve their grades. Also doesn't cover all class requirements before grading.
This professor is all over the place. Grading criteria was so unclear and I was unaware I was doing some assignments wrong because they weren't graded until nearly the end of the quarter. After getting grades, I had no feedback and this professor does NOT respond to any kind of email or contact. I felt super left in the dark. I would not recommend
Horrible. At one point when he said I wasnt gonna pass he laughed at me and said, Since you wont be graduating this year anymore(Due to the fact this is a required course to graduate; Also he did not know I was a junior so I was returning in fall but still) Ill see you back her next fall and laughed at me some more as I walked out the door...
I took his online class and it was an absolute mess. He barely answers emails, never uses rubrics and has weird assignments with unclear instructions. He is the only online American Gov teacher which is why I looked past his score, but don't do what I did!! It's not worth it. Also, the midterm and final are both three (3) long essays each.
It is currently June 17th, 2020, the quarter ends around this Friday and there isn't anything but the midterms, intros and web text assignments graded (the web text automatically grades itself btw) so out of the many assignments we have done this year he has grades 4, the midterms and introductions. 16-17 assignments are not graded.
Im taking this class in spring quarter of my senior year of high school. my hs graduation is in 1 week, and i currently have a failing grade because the only things in the gradebook are assignments that go in automatically, my midterm, & the zeros that he put in. assignments are unclear bc he makes the due dates and titles different on each system.
The quarter ended yesterday, and there has only been a couple of assignments graded. He posted a message saying that he is working on grades during the midterm exam, and that we will receive feedback on how we are doing in the class. But so far, nothing. He has not replied to any of my messages. I feel left in the dark.
Grades for Spring 2020 posted today and he never even graded half of the assignments. I needed this class to graduate and he was the only prof left and online. Of the 18 courses I took this was by far the worst. I honestly don't even think he does anything except post articles under announcements. If you have any other choice, don't take this prof!
The final grades for the quarter were just put in. Nothing had been graded since the Mid-Term, and he deleted the canvas page once he input the grade. I never saw what I got for my final. I doubt he even read it. I expected more from this class, I put in a lot of work and I got nothing back from him in return. I would not recommend this class.
Let me just start by just saying DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It is the midpoint for the semester and there has been 30 plus assignments and only 3 graded. We just had our first quiz and almost all of the questions weren't covered in our readings. This class is an unfunny joke.
I wrote an angry review before this review about this professor after what I though was an unjust score on a test. I later e mailed him abt it and got it figured out with him. I jumped the gun on the earlier review, however, I am still skeptical about the class. there isn't many things graded however, I have high hopes
I have never taken a class with such an unnecessary and OBNOXIOUS amount of work. It seems like he intentionally makes his assignments as tedious and time-consuming as possible because he enjoys wasting your time. The content in this class is not that difficult, but the sheer volume of confusingly written assignments will test your mental health.
There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this professor. Constantly moving around due dates, very unclear instructions, and little to no feedback on assignments. He assigned 3 1000 word essays for the midterm and final exams, then didnt even bother to give feedback. There aren't enough words in the English language to describe how terrible he is
I would not recommend anyone to choose this professor. He doesnt grade anything and just uses the same instruction for every assignment which makes each assignment confusing. He assigns 3 questions that need to be 3+ pages of length answers for mid-terms and finals and does not give you any feedback on what he did wrong.
I would not recommended this professor to anyone looking to take political science, at least online. The assignment descriptions were often very confusing and some were just re used. There was no feedback on assignments, which proved to be a problem for me when we had to write our second set of 3 essays , which was the final.
I was really excited about this course. The material is interesting and the prof gives you extra articles if you are interested. The grades really came down to the midterm and the final and a few small assignments. The discussions didn't count for grades. The essay prompts and guidelines were pretty confusing, and clarifications were confusing too
Professor Hoon is a very slow grader which ultimately effected my final grade as he didn't grade any assignments that were completed at the beginning of the quarter. I took this as an online course and the workload isn't too bad but the final/midterm exams are difficult and I would not advise taking this course.
"How previous two hundred and fifty years the early 1500s, leading up to 1776 and the inclusion of slavery in the original document influence the subsequent development of the United States?" This is a question he gave his students. Expectations for assignments are very vague and confusing. He is also an extremely slow grader.
This is by far the most uncoordinated class I have ever taken. The due dates are constantly changing. The assignments have shockingly unprofessional grammar. Prof. Hoon had yet to grade any of my work even though we were a month in. There is no clear guidance in any of the assignments and I can just feel the lack of effort. This class was a pain!
He does not give feedback unless you ASK FOR IT, but he is very willing to talk to you if you reach out to him. He responds very quickly and is eager to help but you do need to ask him. Make sure to do assignments well because he is a tough grader. It's hard to get a perfect score on anything.
Good teacher and interesting to say the least! Be ready to do a LOT of homework if you're online. It's not very difficult homework, just very time consuming. The quizzes and tests require you to KNOW what you learned.
The only hard part of this class is the midterm and final which are both 3 essays about 750-1500 words each. The weekly work is not that hard if you stay on track, there are a ton of quizlets that help with the reading. No required zooms. He hosts daily meditation zoom which is super cute and will zoom with you anytime you ask if you are confused.
I couldnt reccomend this prof less! He didnt grade a single thing all quarter. As well as having little to no instructions on assignments. The mid term as well as the final are 3 long essays you must wright on unclear topics. There was also a second final that was up until the last 2 weeks described as just "journal entries" he deosnt respond. BAD
Seems like he thinks your world revolves around his class as non-stop and time-consuming assignments are thrown your way. these assignments are due every other day but he suggests you don't do them last minute, however, don't bother getting ahead as he will screw you over by making something else due and not that previous assignment.
SOOO many unnecessary assignments that take forever. He is the worst teacher I have ever had!! He doesnt grade anything for a long time so you dont even know if your doing good! lord have mercy
I'm only a month in. Nothing's been graded, every question is drawn out, poorly worded, or a ton of small vague questions disguised as one. I sent him an email at the start of the quarter and never got a response since. I just read the midterm essay questions and I'm gonna lose it.
Nothing has been graded so far, and I am about a month into the class. I do not mind if professors take a little to grade - however, I am concerned. Getting a grade and receiving feedback in a timely manner is critical in improving - however, I cannot do that. Overall, Professor Hoon is a nice guy - just having trouble with the dynamics of class
I wish I could give this professor zero stars. Where do I even start. Its a month into the quarter and not a single assignment has been graded. Assignments that i turned in were put in as zeros. And the midterm had to be 12 pages long. You could put your whole heart and soul into this course and still fail. Its unacceptable.
I took this class despite this Professor's reviews because it was the only course in this subject available. It has been 1+ months and the only grades I have are the ones automatically generated by Canvas. All the work is super time-consuming and all together very confusing. Due dates keep changing and assignments just keep getting more unclear.
If you love reading chapters and chapters nightly this class is for you. I dropped it, the workload was not feasible, and there was no engagement. Very nice professor, just not right for me
Class is not hard. He provides your textbook. The chapters are easy and quick to read. The discussion post is easy and based on your opinion, no wrong or right answer. Exam is 3 questions and essay but not hard at all. Workload isn't that heavy, just do everything when its due. Class is basically a guaranteed A-B. Just do your work and pass! GL!
I would recommend against taking this class. This class is too unorganized, the directions on assignments are unclear, due dates get moved around way too often, and the finals are too much. This class isn't HARD but there's way too much work you'll do compared to the VERY slow and shallow grading. Workload unrealistic. Don't take if you have a job.
I cried every day of this class. I read day and night, never stopped. I can't read fast or read well not to mention the textbook was below size 6 front and it was so many pages to read. He never graded anything, and I emailed him 5 different times, and he never responded. I put more effort into this review and he still won't respond. Don't take.
Do not take this professor
The professor keeps a spreadsheet of our grades and doesn't let you see your grade overall in the class (for the most part) Some things are graded automatically, and they do show up. Super strict criteria for grading but has awful directions that aren't clear. They do tell you if you are at risk of failing and is a nice person but lacks as teacher.
Honestly, he was not there when you had questions and he gave a ton of work with little direction on how to even do it.
Alot of homework and reading especially in the discussion posts. Your week looked of around 20 chapters of reading with question on each one, a discussion post, and a few other assignments thrown in. The midterm is three essays with a test as well as the final. He does not reply to emails and gives little to no directions at all!
Horrible. Made us right a 3000 word midterm within a week, I cried for days straight due to stress. He didnt respond to any emails. SUPER UNCLEAR instructions. Everyone hates him. He got in trouble awhile back for not even reading the midterms. He just put them through an automatic grader. Anyone who says hes worth taking is lying to you.
He is very understanding. Although the class was a bit difficult, he was always available after class through email if you had any questions. I would take him again!
I took two of professor Hoon's political science classes while pursuing my degree. Both required a substantial amount of reading and thought, but I found it manageable with some planning. I was under the impression he genuinely cared about my education as he would often give feedback and provide additional assistance. I recommend him as a teacher.
I liked having him as he was pretty accessible outside of class time through email. If you didnt understand something he would totally explain it again. For my final, I asked for 2 days after the deadline, and with my updated exam, and good communication, he gave me 4 days and I was so thankful. Graded it as if it were on time! Would take again!
Worst class I've ever taken. Killed any and all interest I had in the field. Completely inconsiderate of other classes or commitments. Assignments are large and often unmanageable. Directions/questions/etc. are deliberately worded to confuse you. To receive even a bare minimum passing grade you will have to dedicate hours upon hours everyday.
TERRIBLE. HORRIBLE. IF YOU ALREADY EROLLED YOU MIGHT AS WELL DROP OUT OF SPSCC AS A WHOLE. Don't. Don't ever take a class with him. Every night, I went home in fear. I feared his face, the way he smelled, and the grades he gave. He was nearly fired due to the fact that he gave out an F to every student in one of his classes. Nothing you do matters.
Professor Hoon is terrible to say the least. I read these reviews about him before I took the class so I knew what I was getting myself into, but these reviews do not describe exactly how terrible this man is. I now truly know what extreme frustration and anger feels like. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSORS CLASS. You will regret it. Trust me.
The lack of connection in this class is the worst experience I've had as a student at SPSCC. This Professor does not stop to ask questions during his two-and-a-half-hour-long lectures. Students get one break. Very time-consuming assignments and lectures. However, interesting material. Politically unbiased. Somewhat easy grader, but not sympathetic.
I did not enjoy this course. He does not put in grades in a timely manner, by midterms, nothing had been graded. His exam and discussion questions are incredibly lengthy and difficult to understand, not concise at all. Everyone is constantly confused, and attendance is graded. I would highly suggest that you search for another class to take.
Class material was mostly ok, and the online textbook was actually interesting and easy to complete. However, I received no feedback on any work, and only two assignments besides the textbook were graded by finals week. Had a 97%, then the next day it went to a B+... Also, the finals are just a bunch of really long essays. Very annoying class.
He provides a LOT of homework, it's hard to keep up. He requires attendance every day. He is understanding if you can't get your homework done but you have to keep up with it, and he will extend deadlines as long as you get it done. His methods of teaching are all over the place and hard to understand. His instructions are hard to understand.
I would never want to take his class again. The weekly reading is boring, and many assignments just feel like busy work. He does not give good help and it was my only A- on record. I could have gotten to an A, but the assignment I needed required me to read, not joking here, 35 articles and summarize all.
Professor Hoon is actually a really solid professor despite the reviews you may see. He's very relaxed about grading and doesn't grade very tough, you can also turn things in after the due date as long as you let him know, even finals.
The worst professer I have ever had. Workload is unrealistic. You will spend hours and hours doing homework for this class. His questions are intentionally worded to confuse you. Do not take this class! You will regret it! I had to dedicate my life to this class to even be considered for full credit.
Difficult for no reason. In his class he makes students purchase an expensive and unnecessary subscription that the class could do without. And being that I took his class online, I could not understand anything he was saying in his lectures. I would avoid this teacher at all costs if possible. 0/10
The thing about Professor Hoon is that I really like and respect him as a person and a professor, but his class was awful. The workload was unmanageable, and the finals were the most complex and dense projects I have ever done. On the other hand, he let me turn in many things late and was very forgiving. Very caring professor, horrible class.
Dr. Hoon is well versed on the subject and has good intent. The amount of work expected is excessive in my opinion. The questions are worded a little odd and hard to understand exactly what is asked. Get ready to dump 13-15 hours a week in the class. He takes a while to grade but the criteria is clear. He responds quickly to email so thats a bonus.
So from what I've heard, the online class is much more difficult and time consuming than the in-person class that I am taking (PLSCI101). Mr. Hoon is very considerate and cares deeply for the class and students, sometimes the prompts can be a bit confusing, but he is always open for communication and ultimately the class is not difficult.
I lost a huge chunk of my soul working on this class. Genuinely wanted to end it all, not exaggerating. This man was probably sent from the devil himself to torture college students. words can not do justice to how much I and many others despise the very being of this man. I've never had so many consecutive panic attacks working on this class. help
This class was very time-consuming. When I emailed to ask questions, I got no replies. I received little feedback and it felt like I was doing so much work packed into a small amount of time that I really wasn't able to learn much. He seems like a kind guy who cares about his students but he definitely has some things he could improve on.
This class was quite challenging, but Professor Hoon was responsive to emails and willing to work with students. Using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the workload. Overall, a rewarding experience despite the difficulty.
Class was not as bad as reviews, some assignments took a long time, the first "mid term" seemed like a skewed amount of writing but the final was pretty easy and nice.
Professor Hoon is extremely passionate about political science and loves the subject. Unfortunately, as English is his second language, his directions are often very difficult to understand. If you politely ask for clarification, he will clarify and will not bite you.
Honestly, I was scared to take this class after reading his reviews the first time, but he's not a bad professor. He replied to my emails and provided numerous clarifications for assignments. OMG, the workload is so heavy. I don't recommend taking it with any other writing or English classes.
