I am taking a refresher course on Bio40ABC. Rarely had I had a teacher that was unclear, unorganized, scattered, and unhelpful during lecture and esp lab. You are better off learning from self study than going to any of her class. The best teachers are the ones that make you think critically and apply learning material rather than memorize.
Took this class in order to transfer for a Public Health degree. Came in as a working Paramedic and expected to do pretty well however it was still tough. The tests were difficult bc there were a lot of which is "not" questions, meaning you'd have to know every detail about everything in order to do well. Neutral performance, PowerPoint no fun
Microbio is a hard class for anyone without a solid science background. Youre going to have to try. If youre taking this class with any professor, shes a great choice. Homework is assigned & the points help (understand material and/or buffer test grades) Tests are hard but come with a study guide. Shes extremely fair. Would take her again!
Very fair professor. Offers extra credit. Happy to answer questions and extend office hours. Youre going to have to work in this class - but that would be required of any professor with this material. I would take her again.
This class is difficult, but she's a fair professor. You definitely have to work for your grade. It's easy to simply pass (with minimal effort), but it's difficult to get an A. You have to read the chapters in their entirety to do well on her exams. Overall, she's a great professor who clearly wants her students to succeed. I'd take her again. :)
Good lectures. Test are directly from lab and lectures. No big surprises.
She is a tough grader, a lot of homework, quizzes and test very difficult, fortunately she gives extra credits, a lot to read, and do not skip classes , tests , and labs activities, if you want to pass the class!
The A&P taught by Parisa was straightforward. I took her for two quarters including the 40A during summer and 40B during fall. Once you get a hang of her teaching style you will be fine. One must study their textbooks for the lecture exam, there are group quizzes whenever we finish a chapter. She is passionate about what she teaches.
40B is difficult class, I don't think its possible to find an "easy teacher". Dr. Shafaei is a tough grader, but she's an amazing teacher. Shes very responsive, If something in lecture didn't make sense, she would pause to clarify. She's really tries her best so her students can achieve. Dont be discourage by quizzes the more points the better.
She is really nice as a person and as a teacher she is really straightforward and informative. I took her for BIO40B, there are quizzes almost every class, so don't skip and be on time, I lost a lot of points for that. Otherwise tests are pretty okay, if you read the book and listen to lecture, you'll score high. Good luck!
Mrs. Mousavi, is a sweet lady, but misses a lot of class due to headaches. To make matters worse, it was always the week of midterms and then crammed in a whole chapter in a day or two. For those who work, that's difficult to get home at 10 at night and grasp all the material is such short notice plus have to get up early the next morning. 40A & B
She is an amazing teacher very passionate about Biology. She can be tough sometimes but she would take it into consideration and provide you with some extra credit to help you out. It was an honor to work with you Mrs. Mousavi the best of luck to you!!!
There are a lot of things to remember and basically she just read her slides. During the lab, she didn't teach anything, you need to self teaching yourself. exams are ok but you do need to read the book to get a good grades. quizes right after you finish every chapters which is not good.
I took her during summer quarter, and a lot of things to memorize. exams right after we finish one chapter, but its open booked.
Awful Her test is really hard, will not take her again!
This is an anatomy class, so there is a lot of information to learn. There are exams each week, but if you're on top of it, you'll be fine. I didn't use the book at all, I studied her slides and looked up videos on Youtube. She will answer any questions you're having problems with. Great professor with exams that can be easy, if you really study.
I took this class during Summer term, so it was a lot of information to learn very quickly. I read the textbook, which helped me understand the lecture better, but reading the textbook is not needed to get a good grade in this class. Be sure to listen during lecture because she gives information not on her slides that will be on the test.
Took during the excruciating short summer quarter. This is a tough subject, slightly bearable for me since this was a retake. Honestly, you put in the work and your grade will show. "Pop Open Book Quiz" activities (for extra credit). Bought the lab man/TB online and it'll help. Use flashcards, coloring book, YT videos, the STEM center too!
At the beginning I felt that Professor Mousavi was the hardest teacher ever, but now, I love her. She gave extra credit both in the lab and lecture exam which helped me to get an A. Anatomy class during summer is really hard since I work full time, but as long as you put into the effort and read the book, her slide, then you will be ok!!!!
Hardest teacher I have ever taken because there's so much information to go over and she DOESN'T GIVE STUDY GUIDES for the exams.
I think professor Parisa has been teaching for a while now, because she seems very unattached during lectures- reading off her slides and playing videos. She keeps track of attendance via in-class activities to be turned in. Know: there are NO study guides given, exams are extremely difficult- and they are worth many points. EC opportunities given.
Really hard exam and there are a lot of things to memorize without any study guides. Basically, you have to read all details in the textbook. There open book quiz almost every classes, but you use all resources to answer it. There are a lot of extra credits activities. But anyway, BIO 40B is a hard course, no one could question that.
This is so HARD.. EXAM is so hard and you do need to read every single words in the textbook to get a good grades. Most of questions are not related to her slides. And she never mentioned those points at all. YOu have to guess the answer. This is class does ruined my GPA. One good point would be the EC, a lot of EC was offered during the quarter.
Quiz almost every class, and she tracks your attendance through the quiz. Lecture exam seems to have nothing to do with her slides. You need to self teach yourself. During the last few classes, she just read her slides without any explanation. Most of students got confused!!!!!!!!!do not take her if you want to read the heavy book
40B is a hard class - the hardest of the A&P sequence. That being said, Parisa works hard to make it accessible. There are quizzes every class that track attendance because it is hard to do well in the class if you don't show up. She publishes practice questions for all exams so you know what to study. I got an A without ever using the textbook.
I took her 40B class in Fall 2018. She is a great professor- understanding and respected. She is also very specific what is on the lecture and lab exam. I promise you will get an A if you go through the material she gives to you - the powerpoints and the study guides. She is also generous on extra credits too! I would recommend her and take her 40C
She was a great teacher. I took her for Biol 40B. I was intimidated of this class in the beginning because there is so much material, but she explains things clearly and the PowerPoints are very helpful. As long as you put in the time to study for exams and show up to class, you will do well. Many people in our class got As.
Professor Shafaei can be hard for those who do not study enough for the class. She isn't the best lecturer, but she is more than willing to answer any questions you have. You definitely have to review her slides in great detail to do well in the class. I never bought the book- I only studied her slides and still got an A.
She is by far one of the toughest professors I've ever been taught by. I stressed a lot in her class, but I also learned a lot so...... Just be prepared to learn and study like never before.
She is definitely a nice lady, but her exam is so hard that you really have to read the book and all the small details. One thing good would be the extra credit, she gives a lot of CE. Class activity after you finish one chapter, sometimes is group work, sometimes you have to count on you own.
You know how sometimes youre heading to class and youre hoping it gets cancelled? Parisa cancels the hour prior. There was a month where we only met 1x a week and was still expected to retain all the knowledge for the exam. She doesnt teach. She just provides information. Her lectures dont correlate with her exams. Lab exams dont make sense.
i would not take this instructor again, her exams are fill in the blank and not multiple choice, the exams are 50% of your total grade, and she does not give a study guide! Read the textbook very thoroughly and you might get an "B".
I would not recommend you to take this prof if you have other choices. Her exams are hard and though she was saying that her slides are enough for the lecture exam, but no, a lot of information in her exam are never on the slides. So you do need to self-study. Her lab exams are ridiculous, and her guidelines for the lab exam are not clear. run away
Taking A&P with Shaffer was the only option if youre taking classes at night/after work. If you can, take anybody else. She sort of just read off the slides a majority of the time. She doesnt write her own exams so they dont match the lecture. Her lab exams were inconsistent and had vague questioning that made you second guess your answers.
Must attend class for graded clicker type questions after the lecturethat is if she doesnt cancel class. We would learn a ch of material the Thurs before the exam on Tues. Shed rush through the material, but shed read off the slides. Exam questions were a lot harder than the material presented. Says the book isnt needed but you should self teach
HARD EXAM. NOT RELATED TO HER LECTURES AND LAB MANUAL. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU DON'T MIND READING THE BOOK AND STRUGGLE THROUGH THE QUARTER
This is my only choice for BIO classes since I work in the day. Or I would not take this prof, hard exams that not really related to her lectures. You have to read the book to have a basic understanding of some of the terms in the exam. You do need to put a lot of effort to get the grades you want
She canceled some of the lecture and lab classes, as a result, she was so rush to finish the chapter so she could give us the major test on time. You will have a major test right after she finished the chapter. Be prepare to be crazy!!!! at least 40% of her exam questions are not related to her slides, so make sure you read the book!!!!!
Slides are from publisher, she makes edits to & always forgets to upload the edited slides, so youre left without information. Says you dont need the book, but youll need to self teach because her slides dont match the exam questions. the exams are really hard, but she doesnt challenge you to think critically in class to actually LEARN the material
Prof provides a lot of extra credit so overall average is better. But don't expect to learn anything from her lectures. You'll need to do a lot of self-teaching/reading to understand the material and be able to pass the exams. Lab exams are really inconsistent/different every time. Cancels class a lot due to "headaches"
I don't know where all of these negative reviews are coming from - 20/55 students got an A in her class this term. All exam material comes from the lecture slides. She emphasizes what specific material is important for the tests. If you pay attention and go to class, you should be fine. Lab exams are straight from lab book.
Overall I like Prof Parisa, her exams are straightforward and at least 30% of the questions are not from her slides but from the textbook. Unless you have a biology background, but for some people like me from accounting field, I do need to read the book to get good grades. Lab exams are not always form lab manual, some of questions from lecture.
Mrs. Shafaei is perfect and nice person. Enjoyed taking 40B with her. her class activities help you to understand the the material . 40B is not an easy class but she helps you to pass this class. she cares about students and she gave lots of extra credit during the class. her quizzes help you to memorize all the new terminologies better.
wasn't sure if I should take her bc of bad the revws, but so far the class is just as hard as any other bio40. i have to self teach evrythng which is what i hate. She gives EC but u lose class activit pts so easily, they r basically mini quizzes. I haven't finished the class so not sure if I like her grading style. i'll lyk the results when its ovr
Unorganized! Her method of teaching is that of a father who instead of teaching his son to swim just throws him in the water. She just reads from the modules and is very uninterested in making sure the class is engaged and understands the material. expect to do a lot of self teaching and studying with out any obliging direction from her.
dont take her class. she is nice and cares but that doesnt change your grade. i tried as hard as i could and failed all lecture exams. the lab quizzes are not bad, but the lecture exams are ridiculously hard and random stuff. no study guides given so u have to study off of 300 slides ea test. if you struggle in school or bio, do not take her!!!!!!
Be prepared to self study as she teaches off a different set of slides than she provides, and expects you to know the difference. Exams are on 300 slides with no study guide and have multiple questions about a single subtopic so either ace or fail. Lots of EC given to bolster grades. Class activities on random days, so don't ever miss class.
Professor shafaei is a difficult instruction. Bio40b is the hardest of the series. She gives 3 lecture exams and 3 lab practicals. No study guides and isnt always clear about what will be on the test. Can feel as an ambush as to what is being tested. Lots of extra credit offered and she has office hours. Nice lady, shes very kind.
I took Bio40B with Dr. Parisa Mousavi. The lectures were not easy but it is second course of anatomy which includes a lot of difficult topics. She gave a lot of extra credit opportunities and on both lab and lectures exam which I didnt have from my other Anatomy professor. I will continue taking the last course of Anatomy with Dr. Parisa Mousavi.
I just finished Bio 30B this fall and before I took this class I read all the comments and I was scare not only because Biology its hard, but having a hard teacher will make it more difficult. Those students that wrote those comments were way off, she is the best teacher to have if you want to learn biology. I am taking her next quarter .
She is a nice woman but a terrible professor. She reads her slides and tells you to study those for tests. 300+ slides. Tests often feel like an abush, she says to study one thing and it isnt on the test. Her tests are very hard, she does not curve and provides minimal extra credit. Her class caused me terrible test anxiety.
Prof Shafaei is a straightforward professor. She is clear with her material and doesn't make you guess what's going to be on the exams like a lot of professors do. She remembers your name and cares about your well being; she genuinely wants you to succeed. The class is easy IF you study the material she tells you to. Overall an amazing professor!!
Professor Shafaei is an excellent instructor. Her style of teaching is engaging the students to help each other like a community. For instance, the class was split into groups and were assigned an organ system. We learned from the creativity and details from the other group's organ poster. A good grade is acquired through classroom participation.
This professor takes life too seriously. She doesn't like to explain what is on her exams. This professor doesn't inspire me to learn at all. Gets very upset when you ask her a question then she thinks you're attacking her. You need to make sure you read everything because she does not like to be corrected or she will deduct points from you.
She deducts points for nonsense things. She doesn't respond when you email her. The only time she responds is through lecture. So you basically have to wait until the next day to get help! However, be careful what you say in class, she takes things the wrong way! Get a tutor, they're more useful. She assigns a ton of busy work, so be prepared!
This was a great class, considering that it was fully online due to covid-19. Prof. Shafaei cares about her students and is always accessible. She always responds quickly to any emails, even on weekends.
Lecture is a little all over the place but she has them recorded so I could always go back. Very responsive. Her email reminders helped me stay on track with hw and quizes. Theres a lot of resources available in the modules. I suggest you read the book before lectures. Homework was not overwhelming, online simulation was annoying, and easy grader.
Professor Shafaei is a kind teacher, she is very organized and she responds quickly to emails. Although there were a lot of assignments, she always made sure that we submitted homework on time. She gave us many extra credit opportunities. You have to study to earn an A from the lecture slides and you really need to understand the material well.
Her class during pandemic is manageable. The tests and quizzes were really straight forward to her lecture. Definitely take her next quarter for my next biology class!
Incredible! In the beginning the course load seemed like a lot but if you manage your time well then youll be fine. Her grading criteria is straight forward and she responds quickly to emails ! You need to dedicate a couple hours a week because her lecture videos and labs are sometimes dense but so helpful for exams!! Highly recommend.
*note: the only reason attendance wasnt mandatory was because of COVID. This prof is excellent. The best you can get in these tough classes is a clear communicator who genuinely wants her students to understand the material; thats what youll get here. You get out what you put in and she is very helpful along the way. Very thorough lectures.
Professor Shafaei provides everything she can for you to understand the material with recorded lectures, lecture and lab slides, and sends weekly reminders for what's due during the week ahead. With that said, you get what you put in. As long as you are able to keep up with the course and turn in assignments on time, you will succeed.
She lays out what is expected from the beginning. I mainly used the textbook to study. A lot of homework and deadlines through the week to make you stay on top of your work. It can be difficult at times if you're busy with things outside of school but at least it is clear from the start.
Professor Shafaei has a lot of knowledge for teaching Biology. When you attend in her class you can figure it. Her recording video is very helpful to learn because Biology need imagining. She is responsible to answer emails. I enjoyed taking this course and would like to get Bio C with her.
I took her class because it was online and thought it would work well with my schedule, but she makes it very difficult. Her due dates are Wed/Fri, and her assignments are long. She grades on accuracy, and the answers are hard to find. We use a free textbook so that's nice, but it's not very helpful. Not very nice or helpful, hard to understand.
Do not take this class. The content in the tests are not included in coursework. This course is unnecessarily difficult. Worst professor I have ever had.
No study guides for exams and too many assignments, including during exam weeks. Can only see one test question at a time for online tests. She's not very engaging in her recorded lectures and she's also difficult to understand. Textbook wasn't that helpful.
no amount of reading the text book will help you answer her tests. Questions are hard and not based on any of the review material. She assigns histology slides and case studies not in book, then won't help during office hours which means you spend a majority of your time looking for external resources to help understand the content. don't do it.
As long as you religiously review the printed out lab slides and worksheets for the lab then you should be prepared to get the grade you want. Test yourself as much as possible and ask questions in class! Thanks Dr. Shafaei! -Edwin
One of the only professors that I will actually write a review for. She cares a lot about her students and gives A LOT of extra credit on lab exams and during lecture. Go to class and truly listen and this class will be a breeze. No textbook needed, but the exams have easy and hard questions. Start studying few days before exam date.
Professor Shafaei is generous, fair and wants you to succeed. She posts lectures online, provides additional resources and study materials to help you, but it is a lot of work. Tests are from her lectures, so pay attention and re watch her videos. There is no reason to fail this course, but go in understanding you have to work.
Prof Shafaei is a great teacher! Her class is somewhat difficult, but she offers a good amount of extra credit. She is very clear about what will be on the test and gives us practice questions. I would recommend her class and I would be happy to have her as a teacher again.
Not an easy class but Dr. Shafaei provides a lot of resources, allow notecards for exams, & opportunities for EC. There's lecture, pre & post lab quizzes, 3 lecture & 2 lab exams. Take notes, utilize what's given, do additional studying & ask q's for clarification. Hopefully my notes shared w/ her will help prospective students w/ the materials!
I adore this Professor. She has this class set up in a way that has just enough challenge but not too much to overwhelm you. She is caring and humble. She wants you to succeed. She offers extra credit, she gives you everything you need to pass with an A. I really enjoyed her class. She made labs easy to understand.
Put the time in to study she provides many resources you just gotta use it
Professor is very organized and caring. Her grading system is pretty straight forward, if you do the work and study it is easy to pass
This course is demanding and requires effort. Shafaei is a very caring professor and will provide you the materials necessary to pass the class. Definitely would take her again!
Class is very organized and easy to follow. Definitely not an easy A but if you're willing to put in the work it is very much achievable. Lectures are easy to follow/understand and matches what is on the exams
Highly recommend! She is very caring and nice. Answers any questions you have. Lecture exams were online and tedious, and lab exams were stressful but fairly easy if you study enough. It does require a lot of studying and time, but she makes labs interactive and helpful in grasping concepts. I learned a lot!
The professor is VERY tough in her grading. All quizes are timed. Be ready to read read READ! Please read the chapter, watch her lecture recording, lab recording and do the labeling all b4 coming to class. Heavy content, heavy workload, high stress. The class is a challenge for sure, don't be afraid of a challenge it's good for you! Best of luck!
Prof Parisa is a wonderful Prof. Never rated any Prof before but I decided to sign up for this website to rate Prof Parisa so everyone would know more about her. She is the best professor I've ever studied with. She loves teaching and she is doing great at it. She cares about how student give feedback about her and she always listens.
Would love to take other classes if she was teaching them! Genuinely enjoyed meeting for lab every week. Professor Shafaei is extremely helpful and truly just wants students to learn. She is really understanding and open to questions.
I really enjoyed Shafaei's class. Lab was fun and interactive. It's definitely a challenge, but put in the effort and you will be rewarded. Highly recommend doing the labeling before coming to lab. For her lab tests, if you pay attention to the questions she asks during in-lab lecture and study those questions and the models, you should do well.
Took this as a summer course and it was certainly a challenge, but a good one! Professor Shafaei is super kind and engaging. Lab was fun and went by very quickly. Would take her for any and all anatomy and physiology classes if I could!
She comes off as a very nice teacher but once it comes to taking the lab tests she becomes very hard. Her lab tests are biased in my opinion she picks which class she wants to go easier on. Lecture exams are online can't complain about that but for the lab tests get ready to study A LOT. Class averages for lab tests were always low 50s to 60s.
If you be attentive in class it's easy to get An A.
The professor is great and willing to help. The lab exams was tough for the class, but a good grade is achievable if you take the time to study the lab worksheets and memorize the labeled anatomical models she provides during lab. Extra credit assignments are given at the start of the quarter so make sure to do it since it will help later.
A caring and helpful professor burdened by the daunting task of cramming a ton of bulk material into too short a time. She's very sweet and receptive to questions and requests for help, but I think there's only so much one can do when the course's learning goals involve memorizing hundreds of terms without adequate time to really get it all down.
I learned a lot from Professor Shafaei's class. It's not an easy A, but the courses is definitely manageable as long as you put the work in. She's extremely knowledgeable and gives clear, concise directions.
Professor Shafaei is great. She really wants you to succeed. Ask questions and do all the extra credits.
One of the best human anatomy and physiology professors out there. She is in top of grading and gives reminders when something is due! It is very easy to follow her in class as she is very interactive with you. If anyone says something negative it's probably because they did not put in the effort.
This class was ok. I am not saying it was horrible. This course has a large amount of information. Not only do you need to learn the functions of the material you are learning but spelling matters as well. You have to know how to spell it correctly or points will be deducted or no points at all. Do not believe the other reviews. Very tough grader.
I took this class in summer I did not get to see the reviews but most of the recent 2025 reviews are good I don't know why she is very hard grader and teacher. She is not organized and not specific in what she wants in the assignments. The tests are memorization of 3 chapters which are 100 something slides Would not recommend if you want hard tests
Very old school styled teacher (expects you to print all the lab materials, will deduct you points if you don't have it), tests are hard (40% of your grade), she is also not a nice person; comes off as rude and blunt, not understanding at all. Just avoid her if you can. If you want an A, don't even think about it.
Lecture exams were tough, closed book and closed notes. Majority of the sample exam questions did not help with preparing for the actual exam. You will also need to buy your own scantrons because it is not provided. Lectures are pre recorded online, so she does not teach in person.
Lecture videos are pretty long and I found reading the textbook to be more helpful than the slides. Lab exam is handwritten, no word bank and spelling matters; lecture exam is multiple choice. The teacher seems passionate about anatomy, but I think her teaching style is hard. Getting an A is very doable if you put in a lot of hours to study.
Be prepared for a lot of confusion. The Canvas layout is scattered, with materials not organized by week. Lecture videos are extremely outdated and long, and exam questions often don't match the lecture content, so you're left guessing what to focus on. Overall, it's not the most structured course, and she's not helpful, friendly, or approachable.
The professor is very strict about the way she wants assignments done but provides little instruction. If you take lecture in person she doesn't actually teach she just has us go over case studies with a partner. If you struggle with self study I would highly recommend finding a different teacher.
She is sometimes late to class. Gives out too much work that she will postpone some of the assignments to a later date. For instance, she created a list for presentations and a lot of us prepared to do it on the date she provided. However, due to time restrictions, she kept pushing presenters back to future dates. Please work on time management!
Online lectures are long, but I really liked them and I barely had to use the online textbook. She assigns a lot of work, but is very clear about her expectations. Provides a lot of external study materials, lots of links to different quizlets from former students and youtube videos. Really learned a lot compared to some of the "easy" professors
Although 40B is supposed to be the hardest out of the series, she was the best professor. I love how she reviews lecture/lab material before lab as a class and will repeat names clearly to easily remember. Before lab activities, she was very clear on what she expected. If you're wrong/confused, she guides you to the correct answer with reasoning.
