Wouldn't recommend taking his stats course unless you're a math god or willing to spend 30 hrs/week on hwk. He obviously enjoys mathematics and teaching, but he expects way too much from his students. I think Parran assumes that we all went to Berkeley and Stanford like he did. His lectures move extremely quickly and it's very hard to keep up.
Overall great teacher. I like his classwork approach which makes me stay on task. It is easy to procrastinate in a math class, He has a great sense of humor.
way, Way, WAY too demanding. If you are just taking the class for the stats GE/transfer req, I would recommend a much easier teacher. His teaching style is only for the mathematically inclined. Parran is great and all, but I don't plan on being a mathematician. The students who really liked math ended up with A's, but the ones who didn't failed.
Even though I got a C, I learned a great deal in his class. To be honest, I would have much rather learned nothing and gotten an A. The class is nightmarish unless you are very good at math. He doesn't give reviews for exams and the exam questions aren't like the homework problems. HUGE sports fan, extremely funny & self deprecating, great teacher.
very helpful teacher and really knows what he is doing. i found some problems with his speaking. but still everything is good if you wonna learn math you really should take this class
Awesome professor, very funny and likes to teach, he uses funny examples to explain the concepts and actively comes around the classroom to help out people who look like they are struggling. He doesn't require cell phones to be put away but you can't be talking to anyone on them for obvious reasons. Tests and quizzes were explained well and were :)
easy midterm
There are 3 kinds of people who like his class: 1. Those who are just there to learn. 2. Those who have already completed stats even though it's an INTRODUCTORY course. 3. Those who love stats & talk/think about it all the time. If all you want from the course is a passing grade (be honest w/ yourself), you will definitely find your efforts futile.
Crazy cool, funny, quiz at beginning of class, easy, then lecture, then classwork, he will help you if needed. Total math geek. Favorite professor ever.
Such an awesome teacher. He is really funny and good at knowing his students. I respect him a lot because he was really helpful all the time and hardworking and made it really easy for everyone. he reviews homework and solve all the hard problems. I love how he made us partners and socialize a bit, that was all really fun!
He provides all the materials you need, don't need the expensive textbook. Had a lot of fun in his class. The homework are very helpful with the tests and exams. I recommended all my friends to take his class. Don't take his math10 if you don't have a good basic math skills.
Because of his notorious reputation for giving tough exams, most of the people who signed up for the class were complete nerds who devoted 3+ hrs/day to the class. That's the ONLY reason for the very high success rate in our class. The tough competition meant NONE of the tests were curved. He has problems relating to lazy students.
Tough, but fair. Spent more hours each week than letters in his last name.
He's one of those young, ambitious teachers who thinks we actually care about learning math, when the only reason we are taking the class is so we can transfer. I have learned a lot from his calculus class though and would take him for 1C if he were teaching it next quarter.
It's been pretty good so far. He's definitely not the best lecturer - he talks way too fast and he doesn't give us enough time to copy down the notes. He does everything else well. His online videos have been really helpful for me.
GREAT TEACHER! He explains material so well and is very helpful! He makes sure you understand what you are doing!
He's a good teacher in that he explains the material well and is always there to help. His voice is very monotone and sometimes sounds like his entire lecture is rehearsed. But none the less I do recommend taking him. I liked how we could bring one page of notes to our exams.
I actually really enjoyed this class. I struggled a bit in the beginning but seeked for help immediately. I asked questions and went to the math tutorial on campas for further help. I passed this class with an A!!! His lectures are pretty clear and we did class exercises so we can have a better understanding. Great professor!
He is a great teacher. His lecture notes are extremely clear and his tests and quizzes are straight forward. Just keep up with the work and you can get an A. The final was easier than I expected! He's one of the best math professors at DeAnza!
This class was really easy. If you did the homework and showed up to class you should be fine. Doing the homework does not mean just writing a bunch of numbers it means actually knowing how to do the problems and how to reach a conclusion. All in all, the class was pretty easy for me.
We all really liked him until we took the final - after the final all of us really hated him. The final is one billion times harder than the midterms.
Overall great teacher. He was well prepared for class and gave us excellent set of notes. Quizzes every Friday that were not difficult. The final exam was not difficult for me.
Gave extra credit problems at the beginning of every class. They were usually the most difficult problems from the homework, which forced you to take the homework seriously so you can help your group. You really need all the extra credit you can get because the final was so much harder than the midterms and dramatically lowers your grade.
Great teacher and person. Tough exams. Picky grader.
Recently completed his class. If you do all of your homework and participate in the Extra Credit sessions then you're fine. I don't think he goes much in-depth with answering questions but hey it's just Pre-Calc l I guess. The extra credit is very important and try to get those points so you'll have an easier time for the final.
Very smart - he graduated from Stanford and UC Berkeley. His midterms are community college level, but his final is berkeley/stanford level. Recommend only if you are willing to study like crazy for the final.
Down-to-earth given his impressive academic credentials. Friendly funny and willing to help.
Best math teacher ever!
Loved him!!! Great sense of humor
If you spend more hours on the hwk each week than letters in HIS last name, you will be successful in the class. The first week, I only worked for four hours (my last name is only three letters long) and I failed the first quiz. After I quadrupled the time I spent on the hwk each week (and quit my job), I started doing well on the quizzes.
The midterms were a complete joke compared to the final. I received 98% and 94% on the midterms and 21% on the final. Went into the final with an A- and came out with an F. Good luck!
Over forty hours of work each week. Hardest teacher at De Anza.
first half of the quarter there are quizzes that consist of hwk questions, so they are easy as long as you did the work. second half homework becomes extra credit and no hwk quizzes. TESTS ALWAYS HAVE THE SAME QUESTIONS FROM HOMEWORK at least 75% of it is from homework. hes a really chill and funny guy if u talk to him. would recommend him for sure
Strict and nice at the same time. Would take again.
Kind and compassionate man - he didn't drop me after my first absence. He did drop me after my second absence however.
Don't cheat on the homework. If you do a homework question perfectly right and can't do the exact same question on the pop quiz, he will assume you cheated on the homework and will then fail you.
He assigns a large homework assignment (took me sixty hours to finish) ONE MONTH BEFORE the class even starts. Enough said.
Best math professor I've had at De Anza. His midterms aren't bad, but his final is extremely difficult. Don't let his Stanford/Berkeley/Monta Vista background intimidate you from taking the class. He's not that hard to understand, and he really knows how to teach Statistics!
Mr. V is a great person and a great teacher. He just fails to realize that his class is not the only thing we have going on in our lives.
He doesn't allow notes for the exams. ( I wouldn't advise taking him if you are the type of student who strongly prefers to have notes for the exams.
Received an F in his Winter 2016 Math 10 class, but I am going to retake the class with him in the spring. Harsh grader, but that just pushes me to work even harder.
I was impressed by the great attitude of my classmates. I got a C on the first exam, but everyone else failed it. NONE of them whined or complained. (I was surprised by this since De Anza is located in Silicon Valley, where people just want more & more.) They kept a smile on their face, worked harder, and some of them didn't fail the second exam.
I definitely wouldn't recommend taking statistics with him unless you received an A in Math 41 or an equivalent or higher course.
If you currently have a full-time job, DO NOT TAKE his class. I REPEAT: if you currently have a full-time job, DO NOT TAKE his class. You need lots of energy to understand the material in his class. I am finding it impossible to balance both a full-time job and his statistics class at the same time.
Favorite teacher at De Anza. Knowledgeable and reasonable. In class, he always tells us that we should enjoy learning rather than focusing on the grade. I wish he would understand that I really do like to learn, but I can't enjoy it because I'm stressed trying to get an A.
Do the homework! If you do the homework, you get the credit points, some extra credit, and you know how to do the problems. He bases the tests on homework. He is very fair and his lectures prepare you to be able to do the homework and do well on the tests. I would definitely take him again.
In my Spring '16 stats class, he was super nice to us until final exam week. He was in a good mood cuz the Warriors and Sharks were winning in the playoffs. The exams were reasonable and I was getting a B. After the Sharks and Warriors BOTH lost in the finals, he made the final exam the most difficult test ever and I ended up with an F. Good luck!
He makes the final ridiculously hard if there is someone in the class not giving every homework problem their all. So if there are 45 hard-working students and just ONE lazy student in your class, you will probably be destroyed by the final and see your grade drop a whole letter grade or two or three. He was the nicest person until the final.
I love his strong, no-nonsense approach to teaching - no extra credit at all, no group quizzes, no hints and no partial credit for the quizzes or exams, exam problems are nothing like the hwk problems. You earn every single point you get. Feels like I am taking an actual college math class for a change.
32 out of the 37 students passed the third exam (a decent number), yet some of the five students who didn't pass had the gall to complain that the exam was unfair. After that unnecessary whining, he gave the most difficult math final in history - only three of the 37 students in the entire class passed the final.
"Unfair!?! I'll show you unfair!" He's actually a fair teacher. Don't be greedy!
He's too passionate about teaching and mathematics - he expects perfection from everyone. Thinks we're lazy if we are not spending at least ten hours on each of his long-ass hwk assignments. I didn't take his class to become a mathematician, I took his class so I could go to Stanford or UC Berkeley.
He does not allow calculators for any of the exams. If you are not capable of multiplying two-digit numbers in your head in a very short period of time, he is not the right teacher for you. Many of my classmates were amazing at mental math so they did well in his class.
I have wonderful "people skills" so why I did get an F? "People skills" means NOTHING when it comes to succeeding in Mr. V's calculus class. To succeed in his class, you must WORK HARD. One of my classmates had awful "people skills" and still passed.
Took his MATH 10 class Spring 2016. LOTS of extra credit opportunities, which was my favorite part of him. HW is a MUST as there are daily quizzes with exact questions from the HW. Tough tests but not impossible. Got A's on all of them, including the final. Overall a super nice guy!
He is pretty chill and his exams are really easy. I scored 5 on AP CALC BC.
He is the smartest person I have ever met. He is amazingly intelligent - he answers every question thrown at him super fast and gives perfect explanations.
On the very first day of class, he walked into the room and said, "Turn in your homework." Wasn't a big deal, he emailed everyone beforehand that there was an assignment before the quarter began. His lectures were based more on examples rather than concept, and he hands out notes for you to follow along.
Mr. V was an amazing professor! He prints notes with lots of example problems to go over in class and they're easy to follow along. Quizzes and exams are based on homework (which there's a lot of) but as long as you do the assignments and understand it you'll be fine.
he goes over various examples during the class and I liked it. There are homework and quizzes every class so get ready to study. If you do all the homework and review frequently, quizzes and tests will be eazy. cheat sheets are allowed for midterms and the final. Just take his class
I can truly say I don't think I would've done as well if I hadn't had him as my prof. He goes very fast pace so you have to keep up! All his quizzes/exams are based on the hw, sometimes even the exact same problems. Let us have cheat sheet for the final. Stay on his good side and don't annoy him because he can be moody, which means no cheat sheets.
If you're slow at learning Calculus, DON'T take this guy. He goes extremely fast. By the time you finish writing down the #1, he's already working on #3.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS with him if you are both student and working , because he doesn't care about it. he doesn't teach math at class well ,he only goes over his papers ,he doesn't write on the whiteboard and explain the problem. he teaches very fast. Also if he finishes his lecture early, he keeps you waiting at the class until the last minute .
Mr. V encourages people to ask questions and individual help. This class is normally hard but he makes it easy to understand.
Excellent teacher for statistics.
He lets you bring notes for tests and the questions are all from hw problems or examples done in class. You take a 2-3 question quiz every class and hw for every class. Makes you work for the grade and you have to come to class to get an A. Definitely going to take his classes again if he teaches calculus.
Great teacher, take him if you can!!
Parran is a very nice man and even though I absolutely hate math I so far am enjoying his class. He even brings in food sometimes for the class. He assigns homework every single class and it is always due the next class meeting. Every class begins with a quiz from the homework. There are no surprises on his exams and he usually allows cheat sheets.
Parran is great. I have always struggled with algebra and was very worried going into a College Statistics Class. His lectures are very straightforward and informative. He has a funny side to him which came out later in the quarter. He is very kind and quirky. His quizzes and tests come directly from the hw assignments. He allows exam cheat sheets!
Challenging. Took him in Fall 2019. Spent 40 hours/week on his class alone. Had to quit my job because of his class. No cheat sheets, index cards, or study guides.
Despite the difficulty of the class, Sithparran Vanniasegaram is a very good and intelligent professor. When questions are thrown at him, he answered and explained well and quick. He also encourages students to work together when solving a problem. And before class starts, he would offer helps to students who had problems with any homeworks.
If u think his class is hard u def gonna fail at UC. He's an easy grader, like hw u cud easily get full score if u studied the book n tests come directly from the book. You won't be solving new problems so there really is no excuse for anyone to get any grade other than A. He's very reasonable cuz he doesnt make participation part of ur grade.
Hardest Math 1C Professor at De Anza. Average exam score was 40/100 and there was no curve. Only the math geniuses got the A's in our class.
I am not too good at math. Professor uses "flipped approach" to teaching, meaning you must teach yourself the basics in order to pass this class. I felt this was more of an Honors Stats 2 class at a university rather than an Intro to Stats class at a community college. I barely understood one piece of homework before we had started another.
He makes his teaching style and expectations clear from the start and doesn't deviate from them. Expects his students to change to him rather than change his teaching style based on his students. I didn't think the class was that hard. Then again, I got 800 on the math SAT. Has a gift for motivating students who are already self-motivated.
I started tutoring intro stats after this course, and now I'm doing my master in BA, his class helped me out until this day.
Hands down the most difficult calculus professor at the college. Only recommended for math nerds and lovers. No extra credit, study guides, or curves. Doesn't "bump up" borderline grades for ANYONE: 559 points out of 700 is a C.
Professor Vanniasegaram is definitely one of the best professors that I have had so far at De Anza. His lectures are extremely clear and rest assured you will never forget the concepts that he teaches. I think he teaches stats exceptionally well. I'd like to take his class again!
Amazing professor who has multiple resources for you if you just ask him or google his name and find his "Web Presence of" website. He makes review packets for each chapter he covers in class, which helps make notes and reminds you of the main formulas needed. Ask questions to ensure you understand the material, as he will pause if necessary.
His online synchronous calculus course is the hardest course offered at De Anza! No cheat seats/study guides for the exams and the exams are proctored by/recorded with Proctorio. Twelve of my classmates were flagged for cheating. I got an A+ in 1B and 1C with a different prof then got a C in his 1D class. Gpa killer for sure. Learned a lot though.
Overall awesome. A bit intimidating at first but he's super chill and his class is solid. Exams questions are usually easier than the homework. Every class we had to do classwork with a partner which was honestly really nice after taking online classes for so long. Highly recommend! Mr. V is great A+ 5 stars u should take his class
Knows multivariable/vector calculus very well. He answered every question I asked of him with ease. Superior Math 1D knowledge. Tricky exams.
If you are not afraid of doing homework choose him, it is easy to get an A because you only need around 900% to get an A. Also the exam was totally online searchable and others are from the homework. If you finish your homework in full score you will be easy to get full mark in the exam too.
The first three exams are community college level and the final exam is berkeley/stanford level (i.e. ridiculously hard). Since he graduated from Berkeley and Stanford, I guess that's not surprising. It's as if his entire personality changed during final exam week. The final dropped me two letter grades (A to C).
Professor V was amazing! He gave reasonable amounts of homework to build aptitude and always answered any questions. The tests and class were quite easy overall. Would 100% recommend taking if you are genuinely interested in learning multivariable!
Professor V is awesome. He drops your lowest homework and quiz grades. If the Warriors are doing well he'll throw a pizza party in class. Each class there's a quiz on what you learned last time and standard hw for that topic. Only the first 11 quizzes are graded. There's 3 non cumulative midterms and a cumulative final. Get quizlet plus
Pretty accessible outside of class, quick responses and grades, easy exams. Homeworks are sometimes hard because the topics are hard. His worksheets have poor explanation so watch the videos by Alexandra Niedden on his website, but the exams are literally his worksheets and homework (even the ones you think are curveballs). Wish he had more videos.
Mr. V responds to any question you ask him in class(if you decide to attend the zoom lectures) and is fairly nice overall. Exams weren't very difficult as they are mostly based on the worksheet questions you work on during class. The Alexandra Niedden videos were the best videos to watch to understand the concepts.
Mr. V's Math 1D is the best math course I've ever taken. He is deeply knowledgeable about the subject material, gives out handouts with all relevant theorems and lots of example problems, and is very accessible outside of class. His grading is tough but fair; you'll have to work hard for a good grade, but your efforts will be rewarded.
Professor V. is awesome. After not taking a math course for months, the beginning of this class was tough but rest assured, Professor V. hosts office hours weekly that became extremely helpful. It was nice knowing he was always available for help. I quickly picked up on his teaching style and his math class became the best I'd taken!
He knows the material too well & that's the problem! Final exam is crazy hard. In my Math 1D class (thirty students), only one person received a course grade of A at the end of the quarter & only two people received a course grade of B. I spent four hours a day working on the hwk & my grade was a D. Wish I'd taken the class with an easier grader!
As long as you consistently do the homework and pay attention in class, you'll be fine. Do as many practice problems as you can; the professor give a huge list of resources, so use them to your advantage!
Mr. V was a very kind professor, he cares about his students and is a good teacher. Make sure to email him if you are waitlisted, he is very responsive and will add you. Homework is graded on accuracy, quizzes are 1-4 random hw questions, and tests are exercises covered in class. Take Mr. V if you can because he really is one of the best I've had.
Mr. V was kind, smart, and dedicated a seemingly perfect fit for the class. However despite being an Angel, this was the hardest class I have ever taken. No matter how much I studied I barely passed. I don't want to blame Mr. V but it couldn't have been my fault. If you value a good teacher take the class, otherwise seek another professor.
The kindest, smartest and sweetest professor I have ever met. Mr. V was a savior to preach the word of math. However despite his positive personality, he was a grading monster. I spent 35+ hours a week doing his hw and studying for no yield. I love Mr. V with all my heart, but I must advice against him. If you love having free time, look away.
Mr. V assigns a ton of homework each day, but as long as you can finish it, and especially ask for help when stuck, the quizzes and midterms that follow should be relatively easy. Quizzes are picked from the exact questions on assigned homework. Attendance is mandatory as everyday is a quiz, but you will get a lot out from his lectures too.
As said in his syllabus, spend 4 hours and 30 minutes on every homework, which is twice a week, and you will do fine.
He uses a strict point system so if you do badly on the 1st exam, you basically have no chance of passing the class. No extra credit, no test corrections, no opportunities to boost your grade. On top of that, the final is incredibly challenging. Learned a lot in his class, but I would much rather have an A on my transcript than the C that's there.
As long as there are no complainers in your class, he is quite reasonable. I took Math 10 and Math 1A with him. There was a complainer in my Math 10 class = final exam was impossible and 3/4 of the class received a course grade of F. There was no complainer in my Math 1A class = final exam was easy and 2/3 of the class received a course grade of A.
Mr. V is caring, inspiring & makes an effort to teach. His lectures r organized, always answers questions, & rly knows his stuff. You don't need calculators at all, on exams you are allowed a few notes, daily quizzes r given but its just hw Qs. Tests tbh not hard, no hardballs on exams & the Q pool is on his site. 10/10 Do take any of his classes!
I took this prof for 1B and 1D and he was just really awesome. If you are someone who relies a lot on examples when learning he's a great professor. The only thing is that his lectures aren't the most entertaining but at the same time, he takes his time answering all questions. I absolutely recommend him.
If it weren't for the final, I would have rated Mr. V as the best professor that I ever had. Knowledgeable, organized, answers difficult questions well. The final was unreasonable though. The questions on the final were ten thousand times harder than the ones on the regular exams. My grade went from an A to a C. Still don't know who pissed him off.
Took his Math 10 class 16 years ago. He was very young at the time and one of my classmates tried to challenge him. Because of that dumb-ass classmate, the final was a total nightmare and I failed the class. I was so discouraged by that failure that I dropped out and started working at Chili's. I now work at Denny's. That classmate ruined my life.
I am currently taking his Math 10 class and he clearly informed us that there is no notecard for the second, third, and final exams. He also clearly informed us that the exam practice problems are NOTHING like the exam problems. I know the delusional classmate who posted the rating below and no one in my class likes them. Hardest stats class ever!
Professor V is the best calc professor I've ever had at De Anza. When I was hospitalized he was very accomodating towards me.He is easy to talk to, gives good lectures, and has reasonable expectations. Also, a lot of the quiz/exam problems come mainly from HW or in-class work, so there's literally no reason to do bad if you actually put in effort.
Professor V. was too strict and too demanding imho. Even though I haven't taken his class since 2022, he still rummages in the back of my mind. He incorporates tons of difficult multivariable calculus and linear algebra examples into his discrete math class. Taking Math 22 with him is an absolutely terrible idea unless you aced Math 1D and Math 2B.
The class became exponentially harder after the San Francisco 49ers lost the Super Bowl. Don't take him in the Winter quarter during an even-numbered year as that's when the 49ers perform their biennial playoff choke job. Not coincidentally, he made the final so difficult that the mean was 49%. His course was much harder than my Physics 4d course.
I typically attend Santa Clara University but took his Math 2B course at De Anza because I thought linear algebra would be easier at a community college. Boy was I wrong! I got an F and probably would have gotten a B had I stuck to SCU. The class was going OK until the final exam. I was completely blindsided by its difficulty - it was otherworldly!
10 quizzes lowest is dropped, all quizzes are pulled from the hw. Hw is collected daily (usually not more than 15 problems). All test questions are pulled from hw and class work (no surprises). 3 midterms (100 pts each) + final (200 pts) Very accommodating. Do the work and you will get an A. Amazing professor!!
Despite studying six hrs a day for his stats class, I got the lowest exam scores out of everyone in the class (22nd highest out of 22). After a great deal of thought, I came up with a theory as to what happened. Every other student were nerds who enjoyed learning math (not just there for the grade). Unlike all my classmates, I am not a fan of math.
Man Professor V is probably one of the best professor I've had, he is straight forwards and knows literally everything about the stuff he teaches. Took him during the summer 2024 as a 5 weeks course, lowkey kinda sad that it went by so fast. Take him if you actually want to learn things.
his is simply amazing.
The syllabus scared me but I did very well in this class. He was very friendly and intelligent and witty. Great lectures, very clear, and he loves to help you. If you do the hw and some studying, you're set for A. For the final, must study... you just need to practice everything a little. Use your quizzes/exams to see what you need to start with.
Mr V is a great professor who teaches concisely and clearly. He answers questions during class as well. There's a good amount of homework but if you do it all you will do well on the daily quizzes which are just homework problems. Exams and final are of same difficulty as homework questions. Lectures are fast paced but he throws in some good jokes
Unbelievably difficult class. But I learned a lot.
I took this course over the summer term. MATH22 was not very challenging. Mr. V claimed to do a flipped approach class, but ended up going over all of the material and problem types in class anyway. He cracked some funny jokes in the class and generally answered questions and explained the material well. Every lecture had a 1hr homework assigment.
Prof V. is one of the best. He really knows his stuff and his class has a swift and solid structure. This also means you absolutely can't miss a class. If you're caught up, he's an amazing lecturer and he works every problem out. But if you're behind, you will be left in the dust. His class requires attention and keep your arithmetic chops up too!
Took Math 10 this fall quarter. The difficulty of the course was beyond my expectations. More than half of the students dropped the class. This is a course where only students who are passionate and talented in mathematics can get an A; otherwise, you may end up with a C or F. I learned a lot from his class but this course is not suitable for me.
Exams are tough, but hey calc is tough. Weird how one of my lazy classmates thought that the 1st three exams were unfair. The questions on those three exams were just solving problems. On the final, there were MANY derivations/proofs of formulas. ALL of the problems on the final were NEVER covered in class. Went from 97% to 71%. Thank God I passed!
I took his class based on a friend's recommendation. I later learned that the class is totally designed in such a way that students who dislike math WILL FAIL. I am one of those math dis-likers. Thus I failed the class. My friend (the one who recommended the course) later came clean & tearfully confessed that she loved math. My friend betrayed me.
His class was so difficult that I built my entire life around his class, kinda like lindsey in the FM song landslide. Make sure you have a huge buffer going into the final exam. The final was harder than a steel wall in Antarctica. With the final, my grade went from a high C to a low F. The final brought me down. Oh mirror in the sky, what is math?
took his Math 10 last year. The difficulty was unbelievable. Only 6 students took the final. There was a quiz every class. He didn't curve under any circumstances, so if you messed up any exam, you were almost get C or F. His teaching methods pushed me to become an excellent math student, and I'm very grateful to him.
He expects you to have a strong math foundation. Perfect algebra, perfect calculus 1 skills. If you don't have any of these mastered, you will struggle. His tests are absolutely brutal and he gives no pity points. Good luck passing the class. I got an A in Calculus I but still managed to drop out of his class due to his extremely difficult exams.
Teaching Mode: Flipped classroom. Pros: You can learn more in-depth. Cons: It requires a significant amount of self-study. Be prepared to spend 8 hours on each class. I wouldn't recommend him if you're taking more than 3 classes. Also, I only recommend the students who love the math. His course can elevate your mathematical thinking to a new level!
So challenging! If you have a hard time with figuring out concepts on the spot he is incredibly difficult since he goes through things pretty quickly. I have him for math 1b rn and this is the grade distribution - 8 F, 7 D, 6 C, 5 C+, 4 B-, 3 B, 2 B+, and a partridge in a pear tree. Rumor has it that the final is harder than a heavy duty trash bag.
Here's what makes his class so hard: there are NO study guides or reviews given before the exams. The class before each exam, I was taught new difficult stuff that would appear on the exam. For the final, I ended up spending 10 times as much time studying topics that were NOT on the test than topics that WERE on the test. Difficulty: 100 out of 5.
Not an easy A.I don't like his teaching model
Difficult quiz every class = constant stress for those who suck at math. He thinks that people who do well on homework and do poorly on the quizzes are cheating on the hwk. He's a great professor only if you love math and are great at it. Otherwise, you will hate the class with a passion. Fortunately for me, I love math and loved Mr. V's class. =)
Hardest professor I have had for math. He gives really hard exams, & expects you to know all your stuff from past math classes. He is great at teaching advanced topics, but makes basic math extremely tough for non-math majors. Like every stereotypical math prof, acts as if math is the only thing that exists in the world. No extra credit is offered.
An overwhelming number of the exam questions were about things that were never taught in class & not covered in the homework. This led me to get an F in the class. To my complete shock, three of my classmates got A's. Maybe they were just math geniuses who could answer any question. His stellar teaching was overshadowed by his tough exam questions.
This is amazing.
There was no study guide and review for the final so I had no idea what the final questions would be. For my bad luck, I studied very hard for areas that were not on the final and studied very little for areas that were on it. My final exam score was 36/200. My exam score would have been at least 140 had the final covered the topics I studied. Sigh
See "Parran Vanniasegaram"
Mr. V's class made me fall in love with math, so I plan to change my major from CS to math.
I can honestly say that Professor V is the best math teacher I have ever had. I am so honored to be his student. He is well prepared for each class and knows the material well. Super organized course. Amazing explanations. Would recommend him to anyone and everyone. Will also take differential equations & linear algebra with him!!!

THIS PROFESSOR IS AMAZING. Just do the homework and you'll do good in this class. I have learned the most from the class then I ever have from any of my other classes. This class sets you up for success in the future and how to succeed in future classes.
Avoid him unless you're amazing at math. He's not for everyone. Some students pass, but most students drop or fail. Great math students = pass, Bad math students = drop or fail.
Great at lectures but the homework takes hours. Be prepared to commit a lot of time
Creates his own questions for the homework so you can't use online solutions to complete the homework. Does not allow index card/notes or give a study guide for the exam + the exam questions are unbelievably hard. Only enroll in his class if you LOVE math. LOVE, not like.
I actually liked his class. He didn't allow an index card or give a review for the final exam because four students were goofing off after the third exam. Plus, the questions on the final were extremely difficult. My grade dropped from 99.6% to 90.5% due to the final. Still got an A though.
An incredible educator! Take him!
Mr. V seems very serious at first, but he's pretty friendly. He prints out his lecture notes so you just copy what he writes on the board. His hw ranges from 6 to 15 problems with many parts to it (1a, 1b...1e). Quiz on previous lecture/hw every time you meet. Quizzes/tests are hw problems.
Pro tip: ACE THE HOMEWORK. The exams are impossible thus you really need all the points you can get in order to pass. No extra credit whatsoever thus perfect homework assignments are the only way to boost your grade. The math nerds in my class loved him and he only listened to feedback from them.
Out of nowhere, he went from being a cool teacher to the strictest teacher ever: no cheat sheets or notes for exams, no exam reviews, no study guides, no extra credit, no late homework accepted, no partial credit given for the exams, no group quizzes, no curve for hard exams, no calculators for quizzes and exams, no slowing down of lectures.
Mr. V is amazing in his lectures. His teaching pace is more advanced. For someone who are not good in math, I advice not to take his class. Whenever you have problems with your math, he will very kindly guide you until you understand the problems. The exam problems are very reasonable and suitable with his teaching. A+ for this professor
Don't like math don't take him. Like math take him. I don't like math so he wasn't the right teacher for me. He's a good teacher though, cares that his students are learning.
Prof V is a knowledgeable and organized instructor. His lectures are helpful, but the coursework and final exam can be quite challenging. Using Unstuckstudy along with the provided resources really helped me stay on top of the material.
No makeups, no extra credit, no cheat sheets, gotta be a math genius, very strict.
I wholeheartedly agree with my good friend below: he is very strict. Also, he is incredibly merciless and unforgiving. The more the three or so dummies in your class antagonize him (not doing the hwk honestly, not paying attention, using cell phones, not working with partners, freq. walking in and out of class, etc.), the harder the final exam is.
Mr. V is amazing! He expects u to preview the lecture, complete the hw,& prepared for the quiz before each class starts. In the lecture,he briefly expains a definition, provides an exmaple, and then u practice 2 similar exercrises. His lecture are fast-pace but really teach u how to solve the hw & exams problems. The best choice for high-level class!
Mr.V is pretty straight forward regarding the expectations he has for his students, but he's a very good teacher. Just communicate with him and do you're homework and you're golden.
Takes his job way too seriously. I needed an 175/250 on the final to pass the class and got a 174. He totally refused to pass me. His response: "You should have studied harder." I freakin' studied five hours each day for that class!! While Professor V is a good person and means well, he is completely unreasonable when it comes to his expectations.
Tough grader!!!
3 midterms and 1 final. He's great at teaching and showing you how to do problems. However, you really need to spend a lot of time out of class in order to succeed. He can be a very tough grader and he expects you to all of the problems his way. Otherwise, you lose points on the test. Overall, he's a nice professor who helps you learn calculus.
Mr.V 's expectations are straightforward. All the test questions directly pick from HW, text book examples, class exercises and pauls online note. I would strongly suggest taking the class exercises again and again, as well as doing all of the homework thoroughly. If you make sure to understand these problems, you will do well.
I'm taking his 2A2B and I really love his class. He's probably the hardest but also the best math teacher at DA. There's a quiz every class, and his lectures go deeper and cover a wider range of content than other CC math classes. But the weird thing is that in the first exams, 32 out of 39 students got A/A+ scores in 2A, and 28 out of 39 in 2B.
Mr. V is quite good at teaching but because of how dense lectures are, it's easy to feel lost in class. To get the most out of this class, I recommend watching the videos on his website (Alexandra Niedden/Kimberly Brehm) before the class. However, don't take him if you're looking for easy A without effort or expecting curve/ extra credit/ drop exam
Mr. V is a legendary guy. The exams are hard, including non-calculator & calculator part, with T/F questions and free-response questions. All students become math geniuses under his excellent instruction. The median exam score is 98/100, and the lower quartile is 94/100. Dedicating your time = A+; Lazy = F.
It's widely known that he has the toughest exams out of all the calculus prof in the district. Lectures are fine but if you don't read the textbook it's over lol. I got a C but had to dedicate my ENTIRE life for it, also helped that this was my only math or science class. Makes you work for everything. He's a funny quirky guy. Very knowledgeable.
I wouldn't suggest taking his class unless you're ready to spend more hours each week than there're letters in his name. He's extremely passionate about math and expects perfection from everyone. He just not realize that math isn't the only thing we have going on in our lives. If you're serious about learning math, this class is well worth taking.
I miss Mr. V so much, even though I have already transferred to Stanford as a math major. The way he teaches is insightful. His class fully prepares students for advanced linear algebra at the university level. Thanks for his teaching and his recommendation letter. He is not a tough grader—only 6 students who always skipped his lectures didn't get A
Challenging but rewarding class. Prof V's teaching style takes some adjustment, but the lectures are engaging if you stay engaged. Use unstuckstudy to succeed.
Mr. V's math class is the hardest yet the most rewarding I've ever taken. He prints out his own handouts for everyone. His class exercises are not easy, many of them are 10,000 times more difficult than the exams. But as long as you work hard and repeatedly redo the homework and class exercises, you will definitely get a good grade. A+ professor!
Mr. V is very strict and pushes you to do well in everything. Even if you are late by five minutes, he will only let you go if you give a reasonable explanation. His class exam averages are usually close to perfect scores because most of his students study very hard, and he kicks out all the lazy students in the first week. Hard class, easy grader.
I had Prof. V for 3 classes at EVC and I swear there are two different people inside of him. The Math 63/73 Mr. V was merciless/unforgiving and only gave passing grades to the select few [loved math, studied 5 hrs/day, answered his questions in class]. The Math 70 Prof. V was kind, fair, gave reasonable exams, & seemed happy teaching us.
Very funny professor and very well-loved by students. Personally, the class was pretty easy, but quite a few people struggled. Quiz every day, but they are exactly same as homework problems. Says he has "flipped classroom", but not really as he still lectures in class and gives homework problems.
good handouts, difficult material; lecture cover all types hw and exams questions, they are much difficult than what's on the exams; exams directly pick from the sources he provided; require to turn in hand written hw and take a quiz every class, grade will suffer due to lack of effort; Absolutely nightmare for lazy students; The idol for nerds
Suddenly, at the last minute of the entire course, he made the most shocking decision of the 21st century—we got the trivial particular solution, the common Maclaurin series, Laplace transforms, an index card, and the exact exam questions for the final. Honestly, this moment was as legendary as the Warriors sinking a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
Mr. V absolutely has two different people inside him. There's no cheat sheet and exams topic in his linear algebra class. Many proof, theorem and problem-solving. Learned a lot though. If the grade is important to you and learning is not, take a different professor.
easy final
Had a very wonderful experience with him. It's reasonable that he doesn't offer extra credit or drop any exams. We had a very nice grade distribution: 35 out of 39 students got an A, and 4 got a B. I would recommend him to everyone, especially if you're in a STEM major.
He is a massive believer in "collective reward". No arrogant pr*cks in my Math 2A class = topics sheet/page of notes & reasonable questions for final [90% of us received A's]. One arrogant pr*ck in my Math 10 class = final was impossible [70% of us received F's]. If you see an arrogant pr*ck in your class, drop the class immediately. Not worth it.
I love this guy. You can really tell that he puts a lot of effort into the class. He definitely knows his stuff and is very well educated as indicated on his website. The site is very well organized, with everything from lecture videos to external resources easily accessible. Exams are fair and accurately reflect what we've learned in class.
Your experience in this class will depend on your prior experience in 1B1C. As someone who had learning with a barely teaching and very easy pass professor before, this was difficult and lectures were hard to follow. I reached out to Mr. V many times for help, even on Sunday. I even had to quit my job just to survive this class. Hardest class ever!
Don't listen to the troll reviews. He may sounds scary, but he's not. Quiz every class, 3 midterms, 1 final. Test and quiz questions are taken directly from the hw, so if you do the hw, you'll be fine. In my class of 40 students, 36 got an A and 4 got a B. It's 2B-you have to put in the work for an A, but he's one of the easier prof for the course.
He believes math is learned by solving lots of problems. In every class, you are required to submit the hk from the previous lecture, take a quiz, and complete class exercises. There are no exceptions—if you are absent, you will receive a zero for hk & quiz. Only recommended for students who are willing to put in the time necessary to be successful
Prof. Parran Vanniasegaram is absolutely a legend.
His grading scale is definitely NOT student-friendly: 98% is needed for an A, 96% is needed for a B, and 90% is needed for a C. I have never heard of anything like this. (For most professors, 70% is good enough for a C.) On top of that, the questions on the final were all TRICK questions.
Average score on Exam 3 - 98/100. ONE of my classmates then complained about the difficulty of the class -----> Average score on Final - 26/200. The final was not curved and there were no test corrections. I had A before the final and F after the final. Because of my self-centered classmate, I had to retake this class.
Mixed feelings: incredible teacher, tough grader. As long as at least one person receives a perfect score on an exam, he won't curve the exam at all. 1 perfect score and 40 F's no curve. Wish my grade was better, but I can honestly say I have learned a lot in his class.
TAKE. HIS. CLASS. Believe me, you won't be disappointed. He's the best thing that happened to me in the time that I took his class. Totally recommend, do not think twice, just TAKE THE CLASS. He's an engaging, understanding, and taxing teacher- all at the same time. You'll find you remember every single part of his curriculum with no issues later.
You have NO CLUE what will appear on the exams, you have to memorize every single formula/integral. The exam questions are all "curve balls". Who on earth passes these impossible exams? It's the jobless mathematics majors who have the time, energy, mathematical foundation, and parental support to complete all the hwk assignments without any "help".
Mr. V inspired me in the same way that Mr. V inspired Ruby in the great film CODA. Ruby gained admission into Berklee but I hope to attend its homonym (Berkeley) one day. Berkeley is where Mr. V went to college
Extremely strict professor.
High on mathematical knowledge and teaching ability, low on compassion. Some of us are working two jobs and have kids to take care of, yet he doesn't care. "20 hours of calculus a week" seems to be his favorite phrase.
He goes at an extremely fast pace. You should not take his class if you prefer an instructor who goes at a slower pace. He also does not give study guides or allow notes for the exams. Knows the subject matter well.
Mr. V is the toughest math instructor at De Anza! He's not for everyone—definitely don't take him unless you really love math.

Mr. V is a smart person and genuinely wants you learning. But his stats course felt more like a lower division course at Stanford than an introductory course at a community college. I am not surprised because he exactly graduated from Berkeley and Stanford.Too challenging. Too time consuming. Try someone else if you are looking for an easy GE.

His class covers a lot of material, but it wasn't as hard as I thought. Most of the exam questions are directly taken from assignments and classwork. If you spend enough time, I promise you'll get an A. I think I would become an extraordinary mathematician if he taught all my math classes.
I took Math 78 with him in Spring 2024 and got a D. As a result, my admission to UCLA was rescinded. Professor V. will not at all touch his grading scale or final grades to help you even if you face rescindment. I was just three points away from a C: my final point total was 557 (out of 800). What did me in was the enormously difficult final exam.

Very difficult class, be prepared to spend lots of time. He is good at teaching and explaining, but the workload was heavy and the exams are super long and hard. I only recommend this class to students who are good at math and have a lot of time.
He is good at teaching, but the materials are too challenging. I believe he is one of the best professors in linear algebra and differential equations, but not in statistics.
Take this class and you will be challenged! This class was very fun and he is a very good teacher! He is pretty nice and very lectures were very good! He is a fair grader when it comes to exams. Many people failed because they didn't study, not because he's not good teacher!
When the gates opened, he stepped forth, and that's when I saw his face. Standing in front of me, in all his godly grandiosity, was Parran Vanniasegaram. I was frozen with awe. He handed me a final exam, and told me that the meaning of life can be determined alone from taking his Stats class. At this moment I was certain: Parran himself was God.
Mr. V is amazing!!!! I wish I could take him for every class. Don't skip class and homework, pay close attention to lecture, and you'll excel with Mr. V. He also has a nice sense of humor! Awesome guy.
This course demands consistent effort. Mr. V is very approachable and dedicated to teaching, but he moves through the material quickly—getting distracted even briefly may cause you to fall behind. Compared to other statistics classes, this one is more challenging, but the rewards are substantial.
Had him at EVC. The notes he provided were very helpful and made understanding the material much easier. Always happy to answer questions. The lecture pacing was a bit fast so I did have to go and reread the textbook and watch YouTube videos to keep up. However, the HW is hard and worth a lot of your grade.
One of the toughest classes I have had with Mr. V simply because it had the highest workload. My recommendation is to only take this class if you have enough time to invest (no pun intended).
Was a great professor until the final. Then he went rogue after one of my classmates said something under their breath. Exam 3 average was 72 and the final exam average was 68. You're probably thinking that doesn't sound too bad. Oh, but I left out one minor detail: exam 3 was out of 100 and the final was out of 200. So the mean final pct. was 34!
As the Golden State Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Semifinals, we got a nightmare of a final exam.
The final was an absolute NIGHTMARE, and I almost failed the class. A bunch of my self-righteous classmates always left early after finishing the quizzes, which seriously pissed him off. As a result, he gave us the most difficult final of 21st century. Only 5 students were able to finish it before 6:20. My self-righteous classmates ruined my life.
Mr. V teaches well and provides extremely organized handouts. However, the difficulty of the final depends on class participation. Some students tried to antagonize him and stopped attending lectures, so we ended up with a difficult final. He gave us two extremely challenging proof questions, which caused my grade to drop from an A to a B.
Does a great job teaching a hard course. Should teach more differential equations and linear algebra courses. Most students get an A in his class.
Lowkey don't understand what the other reviews say about difficulty since all the quizzes and exam questions (except for the two proofs on the final) were directly from the textbook hw or in class exercises. Was in his Spring 25 section and the exam and final averages were pretty high, (IIRC over half the class getting 90+ on all of them).
The tests are extremely difficult & hard to finish. There's absolutely no mercy in the grading & there's no curve at all. Don't expect to get a good grade even if you feel like you know the material well because this professor is so strict. The disparity between what he teaches, what is in the textbook and what he tests you on is quite ridiculous.
I took Math 1C, 2A, and 2B with him and got an A+ in all. His quizzes and exams are fair, so far only one final in 2B was a bit more challenging than usual, but still acceptable. We had time to discuss with classmates (he assigns partners), which really helped. If you study, nothing on the tests feels unfamiliar. I love this professor.
The median score on the final was 44/250. There was a super quiet U.S.A. Math Olympiad qualifier in my class who received a perfect score (250/250) on the final. Professor V has this disgusting rule that if there is a perfect score on an exam, he won't curve it. Thus, the final was not curved and my dreams of going to Princeton died in the process.
What everyone says about his final (it's hard) is true, and says about his grading speed (it's fast) is false. After completing the final, I was on pins & needles for 19 days until I saw my exam score and my final course grade, which was a D+. Due to my score of 52/250 on the final, my admission to UCSD was rescinded. It was very traumatic for me.
He is very straight-forwards and very friendly. If you go to class and study what he gives you, there's no reason you won't get an A. Definitely take this class over other professors. The grade distribution doesn't lie!
Take professor V instead if you want to learn. As you can see from the class distribution, his class is doable; However, the homework workload is pretty heavy. Would take again, but probably not during a shortened summer quarter.
a very hard class
He is an amazing professor if you want to learn, but absolutely terrible if you want to get an A or B. Taking his class was a very demoralizing experience for me. He taught extremely well, and I worked extremely hard (6 hours every day), yet I still failed his class. The final was something else, median was 66/200. Don't take if you value your gpa.
