if you have her as a teacher, be aware!!!! She's probably the most uncomprehensible teacher that you will get. On top of that, she gives you math hw probelms that are not in the book. =[
avoid this teacher....the homework is really hard....and she does not explain well at all
hard teacher, but very knowledgeable and helpful if you go up to her
She's very systematic when she teaches. BEwARE: the 20 pages of notes every lecture. Remeber the cartoon Charlie Brown....waahh wahh wahh. That's about all I hear, but she teaches from the book which is already hard enough to understand. Our homework doesn't come from the book. grrRRrR
Her homework is hard, but her quizes and midterms are straight-forward and easy if you know the material. Overall, she's pretty good. The only think that's annoying is the average of 5 pages of notes both sides per class.
Did old school review for the first 2 weeks...then the first midterm was pretty doable, however, the second midterm was nothing like the review and the majority of the class didnt even pass...Beware of 5- pages of notes per lecture. 0_0
Shes semi-evil.... quazi-evil one might even say... not very good at teaching... but shes really smart... and ok... i guess shes kinda hot.
BEWARE! She's organized with a lot of notes. She does not teach from the book but instead makes you print your homework questions and answer sheets online. Homework is too hard, and so are the midterms and the final. You can tell this lady's smart, too bad she can't teach what she knows. BEWARE!!!
She sucks so bad. She is the meanest person EVER and her tests are impossible. The final took the entire 3 hours for most of the class...and was so hard I thought I might cry. She didn't even stay for the entire thing. Don't take her class EVER. Wait for someone else to teach it.
This lady is the mathematical spawn of satan. I can't say I hate her, but it comes close. She's a total princess... she's totally rude... and she's completely disrepsectful of her students. I didn't get ANYTHING out of this class except the clear understanding that this lady is NUTS.
SHE WAS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. HER HOMEWORK WAS WAY TOO HARD FOR A BASIC CALCULUS CLASS. SHE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH. SHE WAS RUDE TO HER STUDENTS. HER MIDTERMS AND FINALS WERE OVERLY DIFFICULT AND BARELY ANYONE PASSED. WHAT SUCKS IS THAT WE COMPLAINED TO THE MATH DEPARTMENT BUT THEY DID NOTHING. =(
what you need to pass this class is a good teacher and Pascale is NOTHING like a good teacher.
She's an okay teacher. I hate her lectures because they're boring and very fast. Join ACE because that helps a lot. Her midterms are not as hard, but the final is. Her homework is annoying!
she shouldnt be called a teacher because she CANT TEACH. spent $80+ on the text book, and didnt even use it. she wasted my ink making us print out 9 page homework assignments every week. unconsiderate to her students needs. she is the WORST "teacher" ever. i hate her
she is a great teacher. she really encouraged students to work hard and willing to spend her own time making useful materials for us and willing to help student all the time. the midterms and finals were pretty straight forward if you STUDY. she is the best professor that i ever had in college!
THE PERSON BELOW ME HAS IT ALL WRONG! Someone in class asked a question but she didn't understand, so the girl said "nevermind". and she replied with "ok, well anyway" and kept going! this teacher has NO teaching skills whatsoever and didn't even bother trying to help a student! DON'T TAKE HER CLASS

SHE IS THE MOST HORRIBLE MATH TEACHER EVER! Honest going to class everytime, doing all the homework, and doing the quizzes does not help you pass at all! Her work is much to difficult for a calc class, her test were unbearable. Dont take the class with her, I regreat it so much!!
She tried hard with this class, put in so much of her own time, and tried to be available and helpful in office hours. Lectures however were a disaster, homework was unbearable (our ACE leader couldn't even figure out her assignments sometimes), and the final, that was about the worst test ever!
Wonderful teacher, extremely interested in how her students are doing, and VERY helpful if you go to office hours or put in any effort at all.
Pretty fair teacher. Paid a lot of interest into the learning of the students. Then again it was a small class. But was very enthusiastic nonetheless. Kept material interesting, and not too hard if you kept up with the assignments.
Horrible teacher, she herself understands what she's teaching but I don't feel like she's a good teacher at all. I actually became more confused on matters I had already understood fairly well. I do not feel she was helpful or that I learned anything much in this class.

this is by far the best math teacher i have ever had, because she is foreign and hot. who would ever expect their math teacher to be hot, with a hot accent? she is hot, and therefore good. but she sucks at teaching, which sort of sucks. god she's hot.
Major fault I find with her are her 'print out lecture notes' which are mandatory for class. They cost money and are, for the most part, not as helpful as a good ole textbook.
Straight up hottie! Take Pascale's class
Her first lecture said it all. We were directed to be "soldiers of math" under her mathematical regime. If I was smart, I'd have booked it then. Well, I've been schooled. I now know Garaud has the most unfortunate soul i've ever encountered. Don't expect her to help when times get hard. She's in it for the math, not for you.
She was a great teacher I wish she thought math 11b as well. I ended up with a high B in her class. Follow her notes, really important to print them out. She doesn't follow the book at all..everything including the test is from her notes. P.S. look at her old website for hints on homework and exams.
Sharp as hell, keep up and she's great, but not an introductory level class teacher at all.
Be prepared for a Calc/physics ride of your life and hold on tight. Be willing to work your butt off, for any slacking will make you hate a hateful subject even more! Yet, her passion for the subject is contagious! Go to office hours and be on top of things!! Tests are hard, but fair. Love that accent!
Pascale is ruthless. She doesn't care about her students at all. Not clear and only creates a huge grading curve (80%=A, 60%=B) becuase she's a terrible teacher and needs to account for it somehow.
Its a love-hate thing with Garud. I'm sure she was a navy seal or a boot camp sergeant in a previous life. She'll work you to the grave. If you get your butt in gear, you'll pull through. She is clear and straight forward. And her lectures are very helpful. Keep on your toes and practice, practice, practice.
Well, her looks are deceiving. She knows what she is doing and she is good at teaching math but her attitude is compareable to a Fire-Breathing-Dragon!!! She will destroy you if you piss her off but her curve is very nice if the class fails. Either study a lot or pray to god that the class has an average of 55 on the midterm.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Its a super challenging class but if you're willing to put in the effort its well worth it. She lays all the concepts out for you in a very straightforward and clear way. If you print out all her notes, you dont need to buy the book which'll save you money. She also has an awesome grade scale 80% = A 60% = B
I thought she was a very good teacher. Her notes made it easy to refer back to especially for the quiz. The grading scale I wish was a little bit MORE lenient... but you get what you put in. You'll have to take the time to REALLY study though and work it out. Although, I hate applied problems, you need to recall on past math.
I recommend printing all the lecture notes, although they are such a waste of ink and paper. The book is unnecessary and not helpful towards her class. She is tough, but at times, can be nice. The lectures are a bit boring. One midterm and a final, both pretty difficult, but are very curved, so letter grades are, in the end, reasonable.
She seems like a hard ass, but she's really not. Her curve is huge and she really is a good teacher. She gives lots of help with practice tests, extra credit, and help for those of us who still have not mastered algebra. Best Math Teacher I've had yet!
she makes you print your notes out for each class, a lot of paper but worth it. she is always willing to help her students, but she wants you to work for your grade.. she also has applied problems that are hard, but you can work, often fight through. over all she is pretty good :)
Highly recommended. The huge curve makes the class easy. Even without the curve, you would probably do well. She is very clear in explaining things. The only thing that was kind of tough was the homework, but the TAs in section help out a lot with that.
When I had Prof. Garuad all I could think of was how much I disliked her and how miserable she made winter quarter, but I learned SO MUCH! She was a great teacher and her teaching method was fantastic. I really wish she taught more calc classes because it was worth it. She will try to scare you, but don't be intimidated, there's a HUGE curve
I had her for Math 11A and she is a REALLY good teacher. You really don't need the book at all. We barely used it. Her notes are online and you prints them out before hand and just fill them in. It's really organized. There is a really big curve, so it's in students favor. Overall, you will learn a lot in this class but prepare to work for it.
homework can be hard sometimes, but if you study, you'll do fine on tests and quizzes. she is a hard prof but her notes and attending sections help a lot. shes actually a pretty good professor. her notes are clear and always there to help when needed.
She comes off as one of the rudest people on the first day of lecture, but she does have her moments. It may seem impossible, but they do happen. Print out the notes, you won't be able to live w/o them and make sure you go to lecture to fill in the blanks! She definitely knows what she's talking about.
She was a great teacher. Very helpful. Not a lot of HW. She really wants to help her students understand the material and gives out tons of extra credit. If you go to section, you will do well.
Though she may appear as a difficult teacher. She is truly a great teacher, she wants students to really understand calculus. And more or less does a good job doing so. She's really passionate with the subject, and it has been said that not many university professors are like her. To be honest, I think she's the best math teacher I've ever had.
She is a small woman but very intimidating. She lies too. There was a huge curve to account for her harsh grading. Lectures don't necessarily help. If you have a textbook you can skip them. Sections were worthless.
Scary at first. but all in all a very fair teacher. she gives back points for hw since some graders are so horrible. also gives an outline for lecture notes. PRINT THEN AND BRING THEM TO CLASS! the book it not necessary i didn't have one and i got an A-. pay attention to the applied problems on hw and exams. they're the killers!
Her system of taking notes is very useful i think. Just print out the papers and take the notes..they help a lot, and you don't even need to open the book. Her quizes, tests are kinda hard, but if you study hard you should do well ( after all 80% is an A- in this class). Homework is kinda short and prepares you for the test very well.
Many people are intimidated by Pascale but that is because she speaks her mind (who wouldn't want silence while they are trying to lecture?). Great teacher, very enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable- check out her academic background!! All in all, a very clear, precise, and worthwhile class. Especially if u plan on continuing your math ed @ ucsc
She seems very difficult at first, but her style of teaching is really helpful. One of the only math classes were i actually learned how to do the math properly. Lots of hard work, but totally worth it
you'll learn to like her by the end of the quarter! her teaching methods: superb! learned a lot of math in just a quarter. she's knowledgeable, helpful, and straight-forward. how to do well: pay attention in class, attend sections, DO the homework (esp applied probs) and take advantage of her practice midterms/finals! garaud is one of the bests!
Greatest math professor I have had so far.She wants you to ace the class.Plenty extra credit opportunities. If you work hard, you get the grade you deserve.TA's are extremely helpful.Go to lectures and sections and you should get an A or A+ (if you do the extra-credit's too).
learned a lot in her class. Her lectures actually help and homework is also helpful. Theres a lot extra credit so its pretty easy to get a b without trying extremely hard
She got better this year in term of being nicer and teach better. However, she doesn't like to talk to students or help them.
Great teacher easy tests and quizes just requires u to b in class all the time. Very helpful even awards extra credit during office hours. And very very good looking looks almost like a student
PROS- curved grades. a c is really a b, small class so feels like private school, dont need to buy a textbook just print out notes. CONS- lectures focused on case studies, explains math part in "mathmatical corner".
Simply the BEST. If you have any interest in learning math take a class with her. Explains the subject matter extremely well and her tests are very fair often with extra credit problems.
I've already taken pre-calculus so I thought I'd do super well. I'm doing alright but not as well as I'd anticipated. Pascale overcomplicates the subject when really there are many shortcuts you can take. Pay attention and find the strategy that works best for you. And do the practice midterms! The tests are exactly like it with the numbers changed
She teaches good stuff, but she is not a nice person, very rude.
She uses different methods of solving a problem than i'm used to and it confuses me as to which one to choose since hers feels overcomplicated to me. She's an alright professor but she tends to go through the material quickly so keep up
She was a good lecturer as long as you listened during class. Tests are easy if you do her practice tests.
Mrs Garaud is a very good Teacher ! Take her class !
Garaud is a great professor, she takes time in her lectures to make sure everyone is understanding the material properly, and she keeps the lecture interesting with applied problems in math. Grades are curved where 93% A+ and 80% A-. Should be an easy class to pass.
I went into this class expecting the best, based on other reviews of this professor. I have taken trig before but not precalc and she basically assumes everyone already knows whats going on. She tells everyone that the best way to study is the practice tests, however both practice tests were FAR EASIER than the real midterms. She is awful.
She is your typical math teacher. There is nothing special to add, she isn't extraordinary or bad. She does her job and if you pay attention and do the homework, you should be able to get an A in the class. She can be a little mean when people ask questions, but the TAs can answer your questions anyway. Good class!
Her practice finals and practice midterms are unclear and not useful to help you study for your midterms. Prepare to take lots of notes that are not useful, she also overcomplicates problems.
The most unprofessional professor I've ever had. Never available for extra help when needed and if you can manage to track her down good luck with her condescending attitude. She lacks faith in her students and is blind to her own mistakes.
I felt extremely cheated in this class. Garaud would put up a practice midterm and "last year's midterm" in preparation for the upcoming midterm. However, the material on "last year's midterm" and the actual midterm was vastly different and lead me to believe that she is cheating students out of grades. Only 9 students out of 300+ got an A+
Garaud complicated everything more than necessary and made math more difficult than it should be. She expects students to have learned most things already so what she covers will be brief and not very helpful. About 100 homework problems every week. Clicker questions for attendance. Practice midterm and finals were much easier than the real exams.
Her teaching style was, at times, difficult to understand. However, if you do the practice midterms and finals, you should feel confident that you'll do well on the exams.
Didn't learn anything in lecture, going to sections and MSI are the only thing that helped. Other than that, pretty easy class. The tests are somewhat like the practice problems except twice as hard and the finals was harder than expected.
Very organized and straightforward with her lectures. Assigned something around 100 problems of online homework a week but they were just your typical online homework problems. Won't take too much time if you split it up throughout the week. Pretty much just your standard Precalc class.
She is a really good lecturer and makes sure you understand the material during class and during section with the TA's. I think she's pretty awesome and her french accent doesn't get in the way of her teaching.
The lectures were organized, but very boring and not engaging at all. There was a fair amount of homework, about 100 questions per week, but they weren't too difficult. Overall, class wasn't too difficult but very dry and very boring.
Professor Garaud is not engaging. She does not care about her students well being or their grasp of the information. She assigns large amounts of homework that don't translate well to the tests. Her lectures are dry and hard to sit through. Overall disappointing class.
Lectures are super boring but mandatory to understand the class. Will be really tough if you havent take a pre-calculus course before. Super rude when you ask questions and will answer with come to my office hours often. Expect lots of homework too.
Pascale is an overall good professor. Most generous curve Ive ever seen in a class (40-60C, 60-80B, 80-100A) There are short pop quizzes in section but count for only a small portion of grade. One annoying thing as that she uses i-clickers during lecture so attendance is essentially mandatory.
Very boring class with same dry lecture notes everyday + clicker questions so you can't skip class. Lots of busy homework. The class itself is fairly easy and simple but honestly, Pascale can be rude and not very understanding. The TA is much much better and will clarify any questions, and she is also very good at explaining quiz questions.
I took AP Calculus and wanted an easy class so I took this one. I went to class and watched Disney movies in the back, I got an A in the class. Its super easy and when I did pay attention she was actually a great teacher. She accent isnt too heavy. She did move along pretty fast for some people. Go to Section and ask questions if you need help
Not a great teacher. Her lectures are boring she speeds through lectures way to fast and expects us to know everything. She will make you feel dumb if you go to her office hours. She should not be teaching this class. Shes very rude and disrespectful. Was a horrible teacher in general DONT TAKE HER!
She expects A LOT out of you. She doesn't get the average student in this class. Use your TAs. Be prepared for LOTS of MATLAB. I spent approximately 40 hours a week on just this class. Little respect for your time outside of the class. All lectures prerecorded, exams are hard but manageable, quiz and prep before class ~1-2 hours w/o hw.
Will accomodate with extensions on hw when needed & responds to emails quickly. The exams are 70% of your grade. After many people bombed the midterm, she made it so you have to pass the final to pass the class, but she will replace your midterm grade with your final grade if you do better on the final.I easily put in 8 hours a day with this class.
Spent around 30 hours a week on this class. Recorded lectures are okay, but the flipped classroom model added time and work outside graded assignments. The syllabus says this class should be 15 hours/week but I feel that it is unlikely. Undergrads didn't have extra grad hw and group project, but some complained their work was more than 15 hours.
I took AM114 with her and thought she was extremely rude and condescending. Her class uses the flipped classroom model and makes you watch lectures outside of classtime, making the class easily sum up to 30 hours a week of work. When approaching her in office hours or with questions she is very rude and makes you feel quite dumb. DO NOT TAKE HER!
I have taken two classes with Professor Pascale and each is so organized. The way she sets up her courses gives you no option to be left flailing if you simply utilize all the resources on Canvas. Would 100% recommend taking a class with her, I would be ready to do all of her assignments/quizzes though, they are all important.
This is one of the best writing classes I've taken. She wants you to learn to write well! The inquiries aren't too hard, but are quite time consuming since there are two assignments per week, one due at the end of the next lecture. Her office hours are really helpful. She gives really detailed advice on your writing, so use that to improve!!
