Good examples and he really seemed to know good ways of explainting things. (as far as i could tell). Always was up beat , and cheerful. livened the mood. treated us as ='s.
I highly recommend taking Patrick Averbeck for Math 140. He teaches his students everything from the basics. He gives pretty clear step-by-step instructions on how to approach problems. He is very generous and fun to be in class with. A defenite plus.

Interesting teacher, will provide you with complicated extra credit problems to stimulate your mind, but to pass his course you will need to teach yourself some. he does the one easy example from the book, and expects you to do the hard ones on your own.
Pat is pretty tight when it comes to lectures, but sometimes gets a bit carried away with corny jokes. I definitley felt I actually learned quite a bit, his grading is not the easiest, but I felt just by going to class that I benefitted. I am actually looking forward to taking 150 with him!
Pat is an awesome guy, if you put forth the effort he will give you a good grade! I really felt i learned a lot in his Business Calculus class. He is one of the best math teachers I have ever taken a class with. I would highly recommend him to anyone!
Pat frickin' RULES!!! He is one of the few really excellent teachers at EdCC that actually cares.
Very good teacher, very friendly.
Pat is very nice when it comes to teaching, he is willing to give help but then have a quick temper. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY OR DO IN HIS CLASS, he wants you to be in totall focus, if not, your gonna hear some things you have not heard from other teachers (inside class). But he is a Good explainer!!!

Best Math Teacher I've ever had. He is willing to help anyone at pretty much anytime that works for them. He's also very good at explaining the math.

Pat is awesome! Seriously one of the best professors I've had! I suck at math and was messing around the first month of class and he straightened me out and helped me find a way to pass! The epitome of what a teacher should be!
Great Instructor!! He really wants his students to understand the material and find it useful!! I tell everyone to enroll in his courses!!
Pat was the best math teacher I ever had. Take any of his classes, it was so fun, even if it was too early in the morning to be doing math. He wakes you up.
Great tracher, took his classes for 3 quarters and would take more :)
Math online - not an easy task. Pat is a great instructor and works with students that need help. If you don't understand it, he will work with you until you do. No homework, but the weekly quizzes relate to the assigned homework -it is in your best interest to do it. All exams have to be proctored by the testing center or an approved designee.
On-line course. It is a challenging class, especially for people who have been out of the math groove for awhile. While it is challenging, it is not impossible. Pat is a great instructor and keeps his students entertained with his quirky humor.
Keeps his students interested with real life data. He is a really optimistic fun person full of life and makes his classes very eventful and worth coming to everyday. I recommend taking him for any level of math class!!
So good I considered changing my major to math!
Took Math 90 a couple quarters ago and had to leave in middle of quarter, but was badly struggling anyway. I was very nervous about taking it again. Pat's style is so fun and laid back, I'm not only passing, I'm getting an A. I've heard from others he is the #1 instructor on campus to take ANY math course from. I agree whole heartedly.
Pat is the shining example of what a teacher should be. His jokes are corny, but that's okay. He's always making you smile while serving up a plate of knowledge for you. He willingly spends time outside the class room to have study sessions to help you get prepared for quizzes. I wish Pat could teach every class I ever took at EdCC!!
poor teacher, u will regret if u take him. one example per ch., useless to do the ex. of the book becoz it is totally different with his test. poor grading, many **** in the class. The only good thing is he doesn't require attendance, becoz he knows his class and his teaching is useless.

He is an excellent teacher! His tests are a bit hard, but if you have been doing the homework your all good. He gives very little homework, maybe like 8 or 9 questions a day. He is very helpful and hilarious. I highly recommend him.
I took Pat's on-line class. Pat makes math fun by adding some odd, but funny comments in his lecture notes.. it kept me interested and the notes were very beneficial as well as the discussions. I like that he does not assign too much homework. It allowed me to focus on the main points rather than being inundated w/ too much. Overall great teacher!
Excellent instructor willing to put time into students if you are interested in learning. Tests are difficult, but if you covered the material as instructed you will be fine. Tough material and fair grading.
One of the hardest classes ever. Tests are extremely difficult. Do all the practice tests (he offers lots to practice on) and you will be prepared. Spent more time talking to me than any other prof at Edmonds. Cares about the students. If you want to learn, take one of his classes. Excellent prof!
Online class, Pat is a fantastic instructor. He cares about the students and will work with you. Weekly quiz based on the homework questions, discussion board input, and weekly blog all are very helpful to be successful in this class. Great sense of humor and just a great guy! If you have an opportunity to take a class with Pat...go for it!
Awesome and funny!
This teacher gives office hours a new meaning. He is always welcoming and the subject doesn't always have to be math. He has a great sense of humour.
He is a good guy.
Much better professor when he is one on one. In order to be taken seriously treat him with respect and keep on task. He respects the fact if you go to him for help rather than assuming an assignment. Takes a while to get used to his level of enthusiasm.
favorite
I failed his class because his tests are very hard.
He is a great professor! He is always so energetic and comes to class with a big smile on his face! He makes going to math class less stressful and more fun!
Pat is awesome. One of the best professors I've ever had. Has a good sense of humor and makes class fun. He doesn't assign a lot of homework and you have 1 quiz each Monday but are aloud to use your homework so just do it and those are easy. Tests on examples in class and homework. Do the homework and get a 4.0 like me!
Everyone I knew in that class fail or did not get 3.0+ and I talked to a lot of the students. If your phone rings in class he will embarrass you about it or cancel class if you don't tell him who's phone it is. He jokes in class a lot but CANNOT take any jokes at all. WARNING!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! at least not for calculus!!!
funny, smart, c00l!!! u have to think when talking with him. he is indirect and wan u to think about wat he says
Pat is the best (Math) teacher I have ever had. He makes the material clear and he relates it to real world terms well. He also presents a strong knowledge of material. I loved his class, and I hate math.
One or two examples per class that usually provide little to no guidance for the homework he assignmentss. I appreciate his enthusiasm, but I am prefer reps vs. hard to translate lectures. Forgets on occasion how to do problems which only adds to confusion. Not a good teacher in my opinion.
Great Professor! Easy to work with. Always willing to help students. Funny!
Mr. A changed how I felt about math. Before his class, I felt like I was someone who could not do math- it was impossible. I had to work hard and do all the problems, and at the end he commended me for being one of the best students. I've never met a more enthusiastic math teacher. Not an easy A, but all the quizzes are based off of the HW.
Best professor I ever had so far. Great teaching style. He is extremely helpful and wants his students to be successful.
This professor is ok if you need no direction however he will ONLY Teach you his way, no matter if it is your way of learning and if it's not, he will claim you are not a good match and should seek another teacher. If he doesn't believe in the way you teach, then he won't teach that way. It is all about HIS style and not yours. NOT A RECOMMEND!
A nice teacher ever! clear lecture, homework are very useful for tests, and also gives a lot of extra points, ^^ I got a good grade and learned a lot from him
A really good and nice instructor. Since the class was done on a computer he would help us whenever we needed it. The system sucked but he was a very good and enthusiastic teacher!
Dr. Averbeck is AWESOME! if you do the work and he see's you are trying he will work with you! Coolest Math Teacher EVER! If he sees you don't understand, he is perceptive, he will explain it another way!
He makes a great first impression. Very passionate about math and very playfull. His grading is a tiny bit harsh on response papers and the Final Project, in my opinion. The class pretty easy if you do the homework, you can use them on tests. Most of my classmates hardly opened the book and passed the weekly quiz (even me on occasion), however.
He is so amazing!!!! The best instructor I have ever taken! His explanations are clear and simple, and he is funny
He's really nice :). I'm really love this teacher :D
Mr. Averbeck is a very good teacher. I would say that it is extremely helpful to take notes everyday and do all the homework. He is also very helpful during his office hours and was always able to clarify my questions. Their were 3 tests and a final. They were pretty tough, but if you pay attention in class, you should be fine.
He is very funny and attractive. But his tests, activities were so hard. Even though his power point notes are crystal clear, it is still hard to answer questions..... I wouldn't take him if it's me because he made half of the class not passing.
Dr. Averbeck is awesome ! you should take his class. He's a funny guy. He usually teaches with powerpoint. He's an easy grader. He usually gives partial credit the day after you do you tests. His lecture is also clear. If you don't understand the subject, you can go to his office and ask him. He's very helpful ! good luck ! ;)
he is so wonderful. he seems to be so passionate about his class! he always explains the material very clear. quizzes are easy enough
Dr. Pat is a really funny and fun guy! he has a lot of good examples and warning he will probably use your name in one of the test questions lol. Definitely go through the practice exams before the real one that's the only real thing you need to study. Final is alright. Homework is hard. Activities are harder sit by someone smart to figure it out.
Whoever wants to be a math teacher, take his class and you'll see beyond what you've ever imagined in math. Strongly recommend.
The best teacher ever! I loved being in his class! He is very passionate, clear, and helpful! He loves math, and ready to help you! Test are easy! And he gives you the problems a day before tests, so you would be able to do good, he just changes the equations!
I learned almost nothing from his class that I only spent no more than 2 hours a week on homework. On all the previous calculus courses I spent at least 10 hours a week. For his class, I only took 2 hours before tests and still got A-. However, don't expect he will reply you any mail on Canvas! It sucks!
This teacher makes a lot of corny jokes, but can't take students giving jokes back; Or else expect to be kicked out of class. He can be kinda easy, not too hard. He is also nice, but he's also has mood swings it seems like, so don't goof off too much even though he gets away with it.
Averbeck gives mini lectures & class assignments. Class assignments are definitely more difficult to do compared to his clear lecture. He has short quizzes. His tests are only bout 10-15 questions. I believe his class is great to take if youre GOOD at math. He likes to teach you and have you do critical thinking for complex Q's on activities.
Dr. Pat teaches very clearly and also in a fun way which makes us understand the concept really easy. He gives us practices and activities in class so that we could apply all the concepts and would be able to answer all of the questions. He's gonna answer all questions you have, he gives extra credit for the test and homework if we do it earlier.
He knows his stuff and wants you to know it too. Everything on the quiz is covered in the lectures and you grade the quiz in class to redeem points that you missed. He lectures half the class and group study the second half. Reading the material is important and homework is pulled from the book. Material is open source so no expensive books.
Averbeck is the best math teacher you could ask for. Keeps it funny, high energy and learns the names of his students fast. His method is to kind of throw you into the flames but if you ask he'll give you a fire extinguisher very willingly.
Nice guys overall, lots of activities
Hard but good teacher. Nice .
Really good teacher. Gives you a good understanding on Laplace, wronskian, etc..... Tests are tough and activities can become redundant but solid teacher
Dr. Pat makes math understandable for the average person. If you are a math major then don't take his class because you'll judge the way he teaches, but it is awesome for most. There are options for extra credit so utilize that because the tests are horribly difficult. Dr. Pat is funny, light hearted, and knows that this is tough. Choose him! :D
As someone who has been terrible at math all their life, this class was extremely difficult. You kinda have to already know what to do to get an A. I never seen the material before so it was super really bad for me, you have to study a ton and learn it yourself . But, he is caring and nice and will help you when you ask for it.
In the beginning, I thought that Dr Pat is a terrible teacher with a lot of confusing pop-up quizzes and homework quizzes, but he is actually great. You have to understand the material or you won't pass, but his videos are very helpful if you didn't catch something in class. His quizzes and tests are difficult, but the final is easier.
Dr. Pat is an awesome person with a very kind and sometimes funny personality, he learns all students names and tries his best to answer your questions. But, his in-class activities don't match the level of difficulty of his simple lectures and his tests are difficult. You have to be already comfortable in math in order to pass.
He is the best teacher I have ever met, you can easily understand what he is saying, and after he finish his lecture, he will give you an activity to do, and you have enough time to do it and ask him. 3 tests and 1 final. Tests are not hard if you come to class, and he gives nice grade of all of your tests and assignment.
If you come to class and work hard you should be getting 3.5+ in class! Hey, what can I say, great guy!
Ive had dr Pat for three math courses now and I wouldnt have been so successful if it wasnt for his teaching ability. Ive had multiple anxiety attacks in class and he has been understanding and given me the space to figure out the problems on my own. His jokes are absolutely awful but hes a really incredible and passionate math professor.
Dr Pat is the MVP. You have to work hard but he acknowledged the work student put in. You can tell that he loves his job teaching and those are the best kinds of professors. I would take his class over and over. Also he does a great job explaining the material and pacing the course. I highly recommend him!
He is a really grool (cool and great) teacher, he knows a lot about maths. He is easy going and his materials are useful. If you attend class and do all the activities and hw, you will get good grade in exams. My maths foundation is not good, but with his explanations, everything becomes clear and easy to pick up. I would recommend this instructor.
Dr. Pat is awesome. One thing that you have do is practicing a lot yourself, otherwise, you're not going to do well in exams except you're a genius.
Dr. Pat is a very good teacher!! l can learned a lot in his class.
Nice Guy. Hard teacher. Hard class. Hard exams. If you read the textbook and do the homework, it will not guarantee that you pass the class. He asks harder questions on the exams than what is on the homework intentionally. He may go over in class how to do the problem once or twice then give you a team activity, but even those do not help.
He is a great professor, and I have no doubt about it. I admire him for spending lots of time simplifying the subject, which could be hard just reading the textbook. However, his use of Canvas is kind of messy, such as broken links, missing lecture slides, etc. Other than that, he knows what he is talking about and is fun to work with.
Take the online class if you can you won't regret it. The work for the quarter is perfectly laid out and he responds to messages in minutes. Super sweet and helpful guy, just make sure to participate in the forums and start Activit 1,2,3,4 with prompt time.
Dr, Pat is one of the best math professors . He answeres all the questions and he has really good videos that helped me looot
Dr. Pat is a responsible and encouraging teacher.
Hilarious guy... funny jokes if you pay attention. I took him over the summer and wow, those lectures were very helpful... as well as the discussion boards/activities/group work you are forced to do for points. Can be a lot of work if you have a life outside of school, but that's expected. Anyways, Dr. Pat... I love you!
I have taken dr. Pat for the Fall quarter 2020. Loves his lectures, humors, and his style of explaining. Beware of word and concept problems because he is most likely going to add those the test. Besides that, you need to do groups solutions, group post otherwise you will loose a lot of points.
He makes you want to listen to his lectures. He is hilarious and responds to emails very fast. He answers all questions with thoughtful answers. The homework/activities/group solutions were a lot of work, but they helped a lot for the exam and weekly quizzes. You definitely have to work for it to get a good grade.
He's trying to get you to understand the material and cares about the student actually learning. He doesn't just give you HW then a quiz, then send you a test. He has lectures that you can go to and learn a lot from. Though they are lengthy, attending 90%+ of them can ensure you pass with 3.5+. Took him all the way from pre calc 1 to calc 2.
Dr. Pat is the best professor I have ever taken! You wont find a more caring, knowledgeable, and just awesome prof. Show up to lectures and pay attention, do the work, and ask for help. Office hours if you cannot understand something, he will take the time to help you and make sure you grasp the concept. If you have the chance, take him!
Took his inperson class. Dr. Pat is a caring and funny person, he takes time out of his day to help you out until you understand the material. Gives out daily activities that are confusing, but hes willing you walk you through the steps. A lot of HW each week. His quizzes and exams are extremely hard. Work/study hard for the class or you will fail
Dr. Pat is a wonderful teacher! I took both MATH 140 and 148 with him. Assessments are straightforward and easy if you understand the activities and homework. Going to class is basically mandatory as that is when activities are assigned. Lots of opportunities to improve your grade and earn extra credit
Great prof. He is very hilarious and jokes around during class. His assignments are hard and confusing at times but he is there to help you. You have to put in the effort and hours to study outside of class to get a good grade. Lots of homework but its manageable, and you have enough time to complete them. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help
The best Math Professor.
You need to put a lot of effort and time into this class. Missing one day of class puts you behind by a lot. you really need to learn and understand the material because test questions aren't similar to the homework and activity work. you truly need to understand the concept. But you actually learn a lot because you're forced to learn everything.
His class is great if you enjoy math and like challenging classes. Pat is a great teacher, has great lectures, and is very funny. I loved his class and would definitely take him again.
I've never liked math, but I do like Pat Averbeck. Dr. Pat is a great professor. He is passionate about what he teaches, and his doors are always open. In my personal opinion, there's no reason why you should fail this class. Use your time wisely and make SURE to visit his office hours.
awesome teacher. concepts are kinda hard but he explains them well. super helpful if you are struggling and overall is very energetic and fun in class
Imagine that he never listened to the students' reasons or explanations in class. He will kick you out of class immediately if you don't keep up with what he wants you to do. It's funny that students have to spend a lot of money to go to school but he doesn't care. Regarding lectures, he often uses a lot of slang to lecture, hard for international
he's an awesome teacher!! I just suck at math and couldn't keep up with his fast-paced class so I dropped his class, but he is great!!
I took him as a running start student who is not great at math. Very much NOT accessible outside the classroom so don't bother sending a message. Does give opportunities for EC however it really doesn't boost your grade that much. Compared to the other math teachers i think he is the best one. He is funny and nice just don't get on his bad side.
Dr. Pat is very energetic, organized, and eager to help. Attendance is not taken, however, if you miss class you will miss extra credit opportunities and will struggle with the material. Many opportunities and resources are provided if you are struggling. The lectures were always very engaging and never dull. Overall a great professor!!
Professor Pat is a quirky character who keeps the class entertaining. The material is challenging, but engaging with the textbook and using tools like unstuckstudy can really help. Attend class, stay on top of the work, and you'll do well.
I am honestly conflicted about how I feel about Dr. Pat. Great and nice sometimes but then not so great other times. You HAVE to show up to class or else you miss EC and activities. In my opinion the tests make or break your grade, 3 tests and a final. Weekly quizzes, forum posts, group solutions, and assignments. His office hours are helpful.
I HIGHLY recommend to do the assignments online before he lectures you on it. Really easy to get behind. The reason I will be switching professors is only due to the group activities and scheduling. If you're partnered with a bad group you will do all the work. In class assignments are why i didn't make an A. Focus on testing as thats 45% of grade
Dr. Pat is an amazing professor; you can tell he doesn't do it for money and actually cares for students. The exams and final ARE difficult, and you must understand the content to succeed. His reply time is pretty slow, but he gives great feedback in class. There are multiple extra credit opportunities, and he gives partial credit on exams.
Always gives most valuable feedback. Empathizes logical thinking, not raw memorizing. Appreciates hard work and communication in group activities.
Very energetic professor with lots of extra credit. Tons of in-person graded activities. Tests + activities are challenging but you actually LEARN. He is hard to contact outside of class. He is very passionate about Math and wants all his students to succeed.
Just go to his office hours unless you are some math genius. That way you can know exactly what he is looking for. Do not wait until the last minute to get help and DO NOT fall behind. This is my 3rd class with him so I already knew the structure. If this is your first class it may seem like a lot of homework but once you get used to it it's fine.
You learn differential equations.
I would say Dr Pat is the best professor I've had so far. Lecture are organized and inspirational, but Tests are heavy, you HAVE TO study to get good grades. He cares about his students by a different way, he wants you to be responsive for yourself after study his class, and you have to be proactive for that. Coordinate with him as much as you can.
He seems nice and this was actually the second time I took this professor. However, I think I got on his bad side because he started being quite rude to a friend and myself. He would make us move and take our papers away for silly reasons. You have to make 3 discussion posts a week plus more posts for group solutions on top of the regular homework.
Doesn't hear out opinions and jumps to a lot of conclusions before hearing different student's perspectives.
He has a tendency to interrupt students. kicked a student out of class out of annoyance whenever the student offered his thoughts and possible critiques which I thought was unprofessional. Also, he has a very slow response time and doesnt put much effort in responding to messages/emails if you miss class. Can be unforgiving and impatientat times
He is a understanding teacher. Go to his office hours as much as you can. I was confused and lost everyday in that class, and self taught myself a lot. On wamap the included videos help so much use it! The tests were so difficult you would stay up all night studying for it just to understand nothing. please do NOT get on his bad side or your done.
after attending several office hours, I often left feeling like I did not receive the help I actually needed. His explanations tend to be lengthy, repetitive
It sometimes feels like he is performing the role of a helpful instructor rather than genuinely engaging with student concerns. I believe he could improve by giving more concise, direct guidance and being more aware of the tone he uses with students.
as another person mentioned, for tests he makes certain students move which is strange and it's not like everyone has assigned seats for tests, but he just chooses some people to move based on who he is suspicious of. also he's overly comfortable with his students at times and he should just stick to being more professional and teacher like
He's… eccentric. If you want extensions, you have to argue like a lawyer. I like him as a person, but I'm not sure if I would take his class again. Study for the tests, and do the activities. READ THE SYLLABUS. Attendance not required TECHNICALLY but quizzes every Tuesday that you need to be in class for.
He is enthusiastic, sure, but I really dislike his stubbornness at times. I corrected him in a mistake he made during office hours, and he got really defensive and passive aggressive. I stood my ground knowing I was in the right, which made him especially irritated
If you want the watered down version of differential equations with no explanations or proof of what's happening he's your guy. If not wait for another instructor to teach it.
