Got to be the coolest, friendliest, nicest teacher @ mission. He is really helpful. his tests are fair. He emphasizes the main idea [fundamentals] more than stupid some hard stupid useless problems.Take him if you want to learn !
He is super , so cool , so stress in his class!!! take it with him he is the best
Pat knows how to teach. tests are easy. you learn the concepts really well. He really cares about his students.
A+ quality teacher. His tests are medium hard but explains things clearly. He is really funny sometimes too.
He is fabolous teacher. I took him when he was teaching Math C. He knows how to explain. The quizes are fair and direct to the point. Well, i have a crush on him!.... he
He's easy, but I don't think he knows a whole lot about Discrete Math. When you arrive at SJSU, expect a HUGE burden. Unforunately, I did not feel I learned as much as I should have.. and I'm suffering for that now (4 semesters later!) But he's easy!
he's a cool teacher, his classes are pretty easy. his tests are pretty easy too, you don't even need to do homework because he doesn't count homework. great teacher, should take him for calculus if you need it.
he's cool ....but if you wanna learn the whole in this class(Math4C), taking it with others...i dun like his teaching. it's so fast and i slept in class all the time... most students did in this class.
He is the best, u'll enjoy his class & u'll learn a lot, he is the sweetest teacher I ever had. if u need help he is always there for u, he dosen't mind to go over a problem agian & again.there is no stress , everything is so cool & relaxing.
Pat is an extremely talented teacher, oh yeah and he's funny too. I would definately recommend taking his class as he is very calm, patient, and helpful. He is the best Algebra teacher I have ever had! (kept me awake)I would give him an A++++ Pat rocks!
he sucks
Very well organized teacher. I like his organized method of presenting a new material. Tests-no suprises. Do homework and you will be ok. Good teacher.
he's the best teacher i ever had! he's cool and very approachable. he teaches his class very well.
Pat is soo AWSOME!He ROCKS!The best math teacher you'll ever have! That's why I took him twice. He's totally understanding and knows you by name. He's not too shy to approach you if he sees you at the mall =D He sounds like kermit the frog, but it makes class entertaining. He's always free to help!!!!
very nice- awesome teacher...if you wanna learn math...you should take this professor-he is soooooo cool!!!
Very cool teacher, and he's always helpful if you have questions. Exams are very easy, you can use your note cards.
Best teacher @ mission college. He will make you love math. The exams test you on necessary stuff only!! A++ quality.
Finised all math, physics, english, CS series. Still, no teacher is as good as he is. He sparks the mathematical interest in you. He never discourages his students. Friendly. We need professoors like him in UC.
Awesome Teacher! I would recommend him to anyone! :)!
best math teacher around, explains everything very clear and goes at a good pace
Overall, he's a pretty good teacher. However, he has this laidback attitude and can get pretty boring. We ALWAYS got out early during the summer. His tests are a lil tricky, but you will manage if you study hard.
I enjoyed taking his class very much. He makes you enjoy math and not get bored. He is fair to students especially if you are just starting college. I recommend taking any of his classes :)
By far one of the best math teachers. Attempted many times to take this class with other teachers. I passed with an 'A'. Don't get me wrong, the 'A' wasn't just given to me. You have to attend class every meeting, do homework, and take notes. Overall, GREAT TEACHER!
Teaching is sufficient, but nothing to write home about. Test were difficult, mostly because of the time limit. If you want a good grade drill for speed and pay attention to what he lectures on, some of the test material is not in the book.
Hard class, test are very difficult, test are impossible, class average was a 68. Very difficutl for 3b.
this class was very confusing. His lectures did not really give any clarity and he did not collect homework. I had to go to the math lab to have each lecture reexplained. A waste of time in my opinion.
He is very helpful and explains very clearly
good math teacher. tests are hard, however calculus is hard. does his best to simplify the material and explains with visuals. Nearly never skips a step. No hw required, but it is a very good idea to do it anyway. Doesnt make lecture long and boring.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. He is muccch better than UCLA professors. Very easy class but you will learn sooooo much. A+
Hard class, very few A's and B's, mostly B. Test only on the hardest part of the sections. Take someone else for 3B, he may be easy for precalc but really hard for 3B.
nice teacher, enjoy teaching, energetic, but tests are a bit hard,
Alien from another planet.Stuck on self and not to helpful to students.Hard to get straight answers out of him. Take someone else. Poor test giver. Feeds lots of negative to students.
do not take this guy for math 3b, test are extremely difficult, heard all these great things about him for 3a but 2b is a killer
If u want to learn math from the begining, take a class with him.He is really good at what he is doing ,know all the stuff, teach u step by step. The office hours is a blessing , he wants to make sure u get the concept. The tests are fair. This is not an elementry math so expect it to be a little bit hard , but with him U have nothing to worry about:)
Test is very hard. He gave homework but newer correct. He said that the test base on the homework but it was not ( 180 degree defferent). I never understand his lecture. Beside, he just walk you around with diffrent materials tht he like instead of the main problem.
crazy teacher. Don't take him.
If you want to learn sth, you should take another teacher.
Best professor I have ever had. He knows his material. Took him couple yrs ago, felt he was easy. Also, it was a night class and he used to let us go early ! He is definitely better than professors here @ UCSD
Lavallo loves Math. That alone rates him high. He was always willing to talk after class, sometimes for hours. He never gives up on a problem. He cares for his students. He is tough on students who try and coast through his class. He can come across as gruff until you get to know him and understand what he is trying to say.
He is very disorganized. His teaching style sucks. Very confusing. Likes to do one problem, start another, then assign some random hw problems, THEN go back to the first problem, while earasing half of it. GOOD LUCK taking notes and actually understanding what you write. Oh yeah, No calculators=/ If you really do LOVE integrals, have fun!If not GL!
He jumps right into the lecture. No calculators allowed, quizzes are pop quizzes. no note, only basic calculators. he stands in front of the board while lecturing, so you can't copy anything down until he moves! i couldn't handle it and dropped his class.. I'm now taking jonish. he so much better!!!
really bad teacher, just proof of the formulas, not much examples a lot. Lots of quizs, no calculator allow :)dont take him for math3B
Calc. isn't easy, and this teacher isn't making it any better... He is funny, but his teaching style isn't great; gives examples, doesn't explain concepts.
Math is not the easiest to follow. Felt that he didn't have the patients or time to deal with someone below him.
Mr. LaVallo was very nice and helpful, but I did not like his teaching style. He moved very fast through the material and had too many group assignments. A large portion of your grade is based on daily quizes.
He is very unorginized, he has quizzes every classes, doesn't really teach you at all but pretty much just has you work on class assignment trough out the class.Pretty much there was no point as having him as the teacher I pretty much toaght myself with the text book.
Homework takes 8 hours a day.
Insists students pay for and use online system. Teaches by recapping last classes homework. Easily sidetracked by future applications of what you're learning at the moment. Example: Spent 25 minuets teaching algebra, and 45 talking about its use in calculus, then got side tracked by talking about finding the tomb of Archimedes while on vacation.
So far I like him. He teaches in a way that ties things together so that you learn the "why" of doing things in certain ways and the future applications. My only request: some of us did WELL in int algebra, but many years ago, and many things have been forgotten. I am changing careers, so am revisiting math w/ new eyes and would appreciate patience
Mister LaVallo is a great person. His teaching style is a little off. He expects a lot from day one, but as the semester goes on he softens up a little more. Just be ready to dive into math and be good at it!
There is seriously something wrong this him. He is always making simple mistakes and students have to correct him. He blames it on his forgetful memory...He gives tons of hw that extremely time consuming! What a joke
He is most useless teacher at the school. He shows examples at light-speed and expects you to already know everything. More than half of the class failed the midterm and he advised most of his students to just drop and give up. Don't take his class unless you want a ridiculous amount of homework and are ready to teach yourself everything.
Very helpfull
He sucks.dont go to him. hes not fun, doesn't put emotion in his words, and gives riduculus amount of hw. screw him and get any other teacher
Be prepared to break out that text book folks, because you'll learn alot more from it than you will from him. He's monotonous, barely engaging (his lectures are literally just him talking to the board) and goes WAY too fast for anyone to comprehend clearly. I feel like I lose brain cells by the thousands ever second I sit and listen to him lecture.
He is a terrible teacher, his practice and exams are so much different. He is so strict to give a grade. You should not take his class because he requires to do a lot of online homework. He is not a fair teacher. Mission college should kick him out
I got NP. Although I pretty much know the material, the quiz or tests were so hard and random. I'm afraid of him.
He is a pure math guy. His love for the subject can make even boring, useless things seem interesting and worthwhile. Halfway through the semester, he got sick and we got a sub. OH MY GOD IT WAS AWFUL. You really miss his lectures once you don't have them. He easily illustrates complex theorems. Best Math Teacher at Mission!
He's eccentric to say the least but he's really nice and helpful. if you want to pass you have to talk to him outside of class because it is really hard to learn from his lectures.
does not like to "spoon feed" the student.. explains material way too fast.. does not return email, too much homework.. shall i go on? see if there is another math c available!
Lavallo is an excellent teacher who explains complex or hard to understand concepts in simple terms. He always works out several examples on the board and teaches new material from the ground up. He expects you to be dedicated to learning, which I am guessing most of the people giving him poor grades lack.
Professor Lavallo is an excellent teacher.
If u work hard enough, u will get an A. Pay attention to his lecture, do hw, extra credit and spend time on the text book. I got B b/c too lazy ... ^_^
Good teacher, I enjoy the class last semester.
good teacher only thing that sucks is all of the homework he assigns. but besides that you will learn a lot from him.
homework is assigned online and easy to do since it has all practice problem. hard quizzes, and hard midterm test.. he is very difficult in the test even you just look around
Good professor! Explains the material very clearly. Tells you what to prepare for on tests. show up to class, do hw on web assign and do hw problems from book and you will get an A!!!
One of the absolute worst math teachers I've ever had. Goes out of his way to confuse and bore the class. Rambles on and on endlessly when nobody understands him. Teaches to the one or two people in the class who already know calculus and ignores everyone else. Be prepared to teach yourself all the material because the lecture is useless.
Professor Lavallo is an excellent Math teacher. He explains the material very clearly, always energetic, tests are fair, do all the HW on web-assign and little HW from the textbook you will get A!!!
Fun class, he enjoy teaching, always willing to help his student.
P. Lavallo is hands-down one of the best teachers I've ever had. There's no need to take notes in his class! He now uses a tablet-pc to write all of his lectures, which get uploaded to his website! He also has a deep passion for his job and helping students, so he is always available. One of the few teachers who can get you excited to learn.
Best math professor I've ever had at Mission. Very smart, understand his student, really care all of his students. Very passion teaching math. Best mathC professor.
A+++++++ Pro. Lavallo.
Do not take this class during the summer unless you already know most of the material. Even then you will spend around 4 hours on online homework per night. Most of my frustrations from his class came from the online homework site -- took up all my time. He's easy to understand though! Good for Fall/ Spring.
Very helpful guy, doesn't let his personal issues get in the way of teaching. I didn't take trig before the calc class so technically he taught me trig AND calculus AT THE SAME TIME! Homework is worth more then quizzes so thats a plus. Im sure anyone giving him a bad rating doesnt want to go through the work to learn math. Just saying.
He projects the lecture notes from the ipad and you can access on the net. Many examples are given in his notes. He is very challenging, but a fair grader in the end. If you can?t handle public criticism then take someone else, as he likes to joke around this way. Overall, he simplifies the learning process and focuses on the main elements.
Very passionate about math! The online homework is rather tiring. It doesn't teach you much if your new to the subject. Most of the answers are either guessed or you'll end up spending hours. Good lecture notes. Don't depend on him to learn the subject, lot's of self study required. Tests are not very easy
He will give you a hard test. You are hard to finish 100% problem on his test. Self study is required in his class, test is based on textbook. The thing you need to do in his class is to do the problems in textbook and understand them. Although I got A+ in this class, I felt this is the hardest class of math I passed. B,C are very easy to earn.
dont take unless ur a math major super hard
He gives hard tests. But, goes a little easy on the students. Will be willing to help if you are ready to spend some extra time immediately after the class. Great person to talk to and highly knowledgeable. If you had any extenuating circumstances or other problems, he will be the first person to help you with the dates and exams.
He projects the lecture notes from the ipad and you can access them on the net. Many examples are given in his notes. He is very challenging, but a fair grader in the end. If you can't handle public criticism then take someone else, as he likes to joke around this way. Overall, he simplifies the learning process and focuses on the main elements.
Highly recommend for those who already know calculus, if not, he's quite challenging. He's fun and has a great passion for math, likes to talk about math applied in real life, willing spend extra time after class to help students with homework (which is important for the tests)
If you have nothing else to do then take his class. He gives a boatload of homework through the web and recommends you make flashcards to study the theorems for his test. His tests are not easy. My advice is to either go with another teacher. If he is the only one teaching, then take this class at a different school.
He's late to class *every* day (including 30 minutes late to the midterm, so no one finished and the class average was a 41%), makes insulting comments during his rambling lectures, and fixates on obscure concepts or details that are outside the scope of the class (e.g., calculus proofs in discrete math). Also didn't cover 14 of the syllabus.
I love Lavallo! He may ramble, but he's willing to help you 100%. Very understanding of students who are part-timers as well. I constantly did the MyMathLab homework as were in class going over the material, it was really helpful and the class was very relaxed. I had a B since I stopped showing up for 1/4 of the class, so that's my fault.
He's a very good teacher. He give many homework, but will gladly to extend the due day for you to finish it. The test is very tricky but if you study hard which will help you to understand more math's problems. I will definitely take him again next semester.
Lavallo is no question dedicated. EX: takes email questions, in person too. Class is straightforward: webassign and lecture notes, both structured from book. Lecture notes are great bcuz go beyond basics (Going beyond is optional though). Improvements: In beg, too much time spent on arithmetic. Cutting this would allow more time for conceptual.
It would be nice to know that your math teacher was dyslexic. He definitely rambles on and on about things that are not related to math. He favors students and if you have a question don't bother asking because he will ignore you or tell you its that way just because. If you take the class be prepared to watch youtube videos for more explanation.
Dr. Lavallo is very knowledgeable and inspirational. He encourages and help students all the time. Homework and test is a bit heavy.
Engineering Majors listen up. Want to challenge your math skills, then jump on board the LaVallo express. He's a tough professor, but he's also very helpful to those that need it. Office hours, after class, through emails. Aside from being challenging, he's also a very down to earth guy. He's very passionate about math. Work hard, and do integrals.
I am a non math major and non engineer major. I take Lavallo with aspecting at least a B. Howver, things starts to happen, but i passed. He is a very generous teacher, know all of his students by their names. He will make you work for your grade. Homework is online. Although, it is a math class, but i have never felt stress when i was in his class.
He's cool. He teaches very well. He makes people work together.
Great professor. Cares about student's success. Probably the most knowledgable math professor at mission. Knows material inside and out. Come to class prepared and ask tons of questions and you will do well. Very accessible, always open to questions via email or after class/ office hours. Lazy students will crash and burn.
Great Professor. Lecture notes are well structured. He goes the extra mile demystifying the concepts. You will definitely learn a lot on his class, but be prepared to do the work and persevere.
Professor Lavallo is very dedicated. He cares about every students in his class. He gives interesting lectures. He makes you think and learn. I enjoyed working in his class. He makes everyone get involved. He is a fair grader. If you work for it, you will get good grade.
Pretty easy class for Math C. Explains lessons well.
Professor Lavallo was really great at explaining the details of each type of algebraic construct we needed to learn. He would not only go over these things in class, but would then distribute notes with step-by-step solutions that were easy to follow and helped us to learn enough to then go on and solve problems on our own.
He's a good teacher! His class is fun.. he cares about his students.
He was cool.
He is a good teacher!!!
Excellent Instructor who clearly outlines what is required. Is always available to help. Solid choice!
Great teacher
Great teacher, truly wants the best for his students! He is very helpful when you tell him to slow down on parts of the lecture. would absolutely take his class again if i had too. He's a really good choice when it comes to math!
This class was definitely challenging. A quiz almost every class. One midterm and the final. Reading the material before going to class will help you follow along. Available for help via email and office hours. He definitely wants you to be successful but is going to make you work for it.
Lavallo is such a helpful instructor! I constantly asked questions after class and he never failed to clearly explain everything. Grade was based on my math lab grade and midterm/final. He strongly believes in effort. He has a unique style of teaching where he works through all examples with us, the best math teacher i've ever took.
Lavallo is the man! Yes , his class is hard , however if you show you and participate he will more likely to pass you, his grading is great and gives you a lot of percentage on just your homework which helps your grade in class! Definitely wanta his students to pass, overall great man and person, he understands the struggle of bring a student
I took Math 4C- Linear Algebra with him, and he is such a good teacher. The class is hard, and he devotes a lot of time to teach as well as help you before midterm and finals. There are a lot of quizzes, and he will give you extra credits from your work and your participation. I got A from that class. Recommended this professor!
Mr. Lavallo teaches a tough subject really well and he tells you everything you need to study. You need to be a self-starter to make note cards for all the terms and definitions. That is how I got a B and if I had worked hard all year then I would have had an A. Great guy and has awesome stories and connections!
Best math professor. He looks intimidating but he is a nice guy. He cares about his student's success. Just don't skip class, do your hw, and ask questions
He is a hard teacher will make you work hard but at the end of the day he is a far man show up to every lecture, try to participate during lecture and do all the extra credit offered it helps a lot only a final and midterm. Once more he is a good teacher and a fair person.
The class is work heavy just like any other classes. Make sure to do all homework and quizzes. Very easy teacher to talk to. Cares about his students. Easily accessible through canvas and email, in case you have any question about homework.
If you are an engineering major or you just want to learn calculus, Mr. Lavallo is your best choice out there. Lavallo not only explains difficult calculus concepts in a clear way but he also goes extra mile to explain use of this concepts in engineering field. He will also throw a funny joke or anecdote, so you will crack a smile here or there.
I like Mr. Lavallo. He is the teacher who will help you gain knowledge if you are an engineer or computer science major. He goes beyond teaching math. I recommend his class if you want to learn and prepare for the outside. Also, dont be afraid to ask him questions, he is really nice and patient.
Mr. Lavallo is a great math teacher. If you're an engineering or math major, definitely take his class. His tests are hard so prepare well. Try to participate during lectures and do the homework. Ask questions if you don't understand, he might look intimidating but he's a nice and patient guy.
Lavallo, has many funny stories and is a great teacher. He likes for you to stay involved and focused. Definitely will take him in the future classes!! Some homework but if you stay ahead you will do fine. He just wants you to succeed.
He has a unique way of teaching math. He uses Desmos for reference to his notes. There were written work that he teaches us but this mainly focuses on Desmos, expect teaching yourself for some of the written part. He makes you work for your grade, so study for the test. His test are fair with multiple choice.
Lavallo's class is straightforward. Expect a couple of hours a day for homework. His midterm and final is heavy work and is a huge part of your grade. Overall, if you can do it, you are guaranteed you can get an A.
Professor Lavallo is a great professor and has very organized, useful lectures. In multivariable calculus, he teaches a lot from the physics perspective. He is experienced and knowledgeable in math. His final is weighed very heavily, which may be scary but it encourages students to work harder. He is very nice to talk to and helpful. And funny!
Mr. Lavallo is a nice guy who is available before/after class to help. His lectures are short and brief, so he talks about other things. The last hour of class is spent doing classwork. The final is half your grade. The course is pretty easy, but Mr. Lavallo is a tough grader. As long as you pay attention and participate, you're good.
Lavallo has a solid understanding of math. I took him at spring semester evening course. It was worth it. I learned more from him. In order to do well on the test, you must do your homework and the worksheets he give you. Just don't slack off in his class or else you're dead. I recommend his class.
I had mixed feeling about this professor. He has great passion about teaching math and cares about his students. He uses a different approach to teach calculus which is creative. What bothers me is he always encourages us to use online tools to do homework. The problem is we didn't get much chance to practice by hand and we bombed the midterm.
Great teacher !!! You dont have to buy the textbook and he is very straight to the point on how to solve things. Hes more focused on teaching you how to look and solve the problem rather than the annoying textbook definitions. Made math easy!!!!
A good teacher and cares for his students. There is a lot of online homework so be prepared to do it on time.
Bus Calc is something to avoid. If you need a class that makes it tolerable/frames it in a way you can actually use it then learn with Mr. Lavallo at MC. Not that I like MIssion but Lavallo isn't stuck in 1934 and breaks it up with convo. DO the HW, Do the worksheets, Attend Lectures at all cost!!! & youll be looking at life from a calculus lens.
The class was difficult w/ a majority of the class failing the midterm. In his lectures, I didn't really understand concepts so I had to watch a lot of videos online. He simulates a lot on desmos which can be helpful but didn't help for doing by hand on the tests. Tests are hard but if you ask him questions throughout and work hard you can do well.
Great teacher, recognizes effort so be sure to give this class your ALL especially if Math is not your subject. Assigns take home worksheets every week, be sure to do them! Listen to his feedback & adjust your work accordingly. Learn how to use demos (this is huge in his class). Enjoyed all his side tracked conversation topics & life advice.
Professor Lavallo is TOUGH. If and only if you plan on majoring in Math, then TAKE HIM. If not, I would highly recommend you to take a different professor. He will make you work VERY hard for the A. It is not easy, trust me. Attendance is MANDATORY. DO NOT SKIP A SINGLE CLASS.
Don't skip class, don't be late to class. Do all of the hw, take all the online quizzes on mymathlab. Do all of the take home work, use DESMOS. Participate in class, and you'll be fine! Prof Lavallo is a math genius, he makes it easy to follow, he introduces new ways of thinking and he is always giving good advice!! He is amazing!!!
I can't recommend him. Thinks DESMOS builds physics/math intuition but completely neglects the underlying "monkey work"(WHAT YOU'RE TESTED ON!) opting instead for "ETC/HOME" ... irresponsible prof! Exam: sci calc. only, scantron w/ work problems. "Check Out" procedure wastes time. Final50%. Friendly guy, but I wish he took teaching more seriously!
So helpful ! He is willing to answer any question . He makes sure you understand the lessons . Is available to help when ever needed .
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER TAKEN AT MISSION COLLEGE! He does too much desmos examples and never works out "monkey work" problems in class. He highly encourages the use of online help (wolfram alpha which is a horrible way to teach because they don't get enough practice. 75% of students in his class failed the midterm and barely passed the final!!!
Professor LaVallo did the best in teaching. He was very helpful and tried his best to answer any questions we had. I would definitely take another class of this Professor. Best Regards.
You need to stay on top of things in his class. His lectures aren't the best but try grasping a little material from him. He gives difficult tests so be prepared. Only take his class if you're highly motivated.
He is a nice guy, but take his class only if you are a good self learner. He went over the material too fast and very easy to get lost. Only a few students listened to his lecture. 80% of the course based on my own study. Be sure to review lecture notes before class. VERY hard to get an A, you need to study damn hard. Late to almost every class.
Prof. Lavallo is a good teacher. If you plan to take his class, take it now. He cares about his student. The homework is little bit heavy, but if you pay a attention on the lesson, you can do it. The midterm is 10%. If you dont get the best score, you can replace it in the final. Just pay better attention, you will get an A easily. I recommend him
He is great at explaining notations and connecting all the knowledge together. He is very good at explaining new knowledge with simple examples, and spent more time on helping students to understand the concepts instead of the computation. Just don't like memorizing the definitions.
Prof. Lavallo cares about teaching. He makes sure that students understand the concepts, and that they learn stuff that would be useful for the real world. His background in physics only makes his math lectures more interesting because he constantly draws connections between the two. His personality makes the class a joy to attend. Great teacher!
Pretty tough teacher. You need stay on top of this game. If you want an easy A, it's definitely not for you!
Business Calc. 18-20:05 Prof. made the class enjoyable with his humor. It will be a hard class if you haven't taken a calculus class before so make sure to pay attention. Prof Lavallo tries his best to motivate his students to succeed. I wish that there would be more class practice as groups to better grasp the material. Overall a great professor.
-Professor Laval knows what he's talking about and has a interesting sense of humor is very understanding when students get sick or have issues going on is good at keeping class engaged , I had for Math 12(business calculus) I recommend taking him
He is very good teacher, and his lecture was well organized.
He understand that class is not easy and he will do something to make it easy.
It was hard class, but not with him. He made math 12 class easy for students, and he is a funny teacher as well. Take math 12 with him, you won't disappointed.
Discrete Math wasn't a class he regularly taught but you could tell he loves and has a deep understanding of math in general. He offered many opportunities outside of class for help, although I use them. 40% of each class was spent on lecture, 60% on going over examples, so he was very thorough. Many opportunities for help out of class.
He was one of the worst math teachers I've had at Mission. He never really explained examples, he talked constantly about irrelevant things, he bad mouthed other math teachers DURING CLASS, he started our class's final AN HOUR LATE, to the point where I had to leave his early and get to my next one late. HW was fine, fair grader and fair tests.
great guy. Since he shows up about 30 minutes late to every class, you have more time to talk to your friends. Also, since half the class failed the midterm he just gave us the exact multiple choice questions on the final. he will make sure that his statistics look good, so you will likely pass.
Professor Lavallo is a great teacher, he is always accessible for students when they need help. I would definitely take him again!
Extremely knowledgeable & passionate about math, although not always in his office during office hours. Tends to be late every class. Tough grader especially with definitions for linear algebra. Have to give EXACT definitions or he marks everything wrong, it's all or nothing. Really have to do LOTS of reading and studying ON YOUR OWN to pass.
For someone with a lot of time on their hands and little stress/responsibilities, I think he would be a great prof. Its hard to memorize definitions with a lot of other stress on the mind. I got an A on the scantron/calculations and F on the definitions. It seems unfair that one could get a C for not being able to regurgitate the text.
He's nice, u just have 2 try. Its college math so you have 2 study The best way to pass: Always have his notes printed b4 hand, it's easier to keep up with his fast pace lectures which r mainly for his Worksheets. Lots of time 4 hw so use it to learn, Use symbolab! tests r based on mml. + he bumps up ur grade! Desmos-free graphing cal, learn 2 use
I did not learn anything from him. What I learned is from MyMathLab. In Math4c (Linear Algebra), I have learned about matrix which is not really hard if you know the technique; however, Lavallo did make it harder with lots of definition and true/false question. Once again, believe me, don's take his class. (faithful advice from ASIAN GUY)
Lectures fast paced but he'll help you a lot in office hours. Tests are hard but he curves hella. Homework tedious but not difficult mostly. 4C with him is a little easier: less homework but tests have definitions and proofs etc. Appreciates motivated students; go to office hours to prove that you are one. Very eccentric; a nice person
Definitely!
i took him for STATS .He is very knowledgeable, he wants to see his student succeed , he will help out with anything you need and also will come in if needed for extra help. Do his homework , show up for his class and your pass.
Math teachers are important Math is important as much as we hate it Pat is a phenomenal teacher If you hate math or have trouble with math take him He will help you understand and prevail I appreciate his help and honesty. Hes a amazing teacher I have been trying to pass math for over 10 years now He has help me prevail
As long as you do the hw and show up to class and go to him for help, you will pass. Show that you are trying and you'll be fine. I hate stats and tried taking it with 2 other instructors before Lavallo, but failed miserably.
Professor Lavallo is the best math teacher I've ever had. I probably would have stopped at an Associates Degree if it wasn't for him.
If u r a math/physics major worth taking. He goes in depth with physics related topics. 4a was 2 midterms and final, final was curved and replaced lowest midterm and if u show effort, u will get the grade u want. Sometimes extra credit on final/in class. He has notes for u to use. very friendly and open to questions.
He uses a lot of tech like desmos and wolfram alpha to explain the lecture. Lecture is heavy just pay attention and take note. He allows you to use desmos and such during the test but beware test can be tougher then expected.
His class is hard but he gives a very generous curve at the end of the semester. I had an SI (Supplemental Instructor) in the class. There were one hour SI sessions before each class to prepare for midterms. I scored decent of the first one and almost perfect on the second one. He gave a lot of homework and assigned to graph on Desmos.
If you have already taken a great top notch precal and trig class and already know the material. This is the perfect prof for you. I came in knowing basic algebra, I studied for inumurable hours, dozens of all nighters and got lousy scores. Literally barely passed. The experience of working so hard and knowing Lavallo was worth it for me though.
He is great. He explains everything carefully. He gives you a lot of homework and difficult tests in his class. He allows you using a website like Demos during the tests. But you need to study hard to pass the class.
Homework isn't due til the end of the semester & unlimited, lets you use outside resources on tests, lecture heavy but most of the time you teach yourself. He depends on Desmos a lot, make sure you know how to use it. Has unlimited amount of tries for Practice Test which count towards the grade. Take advantage of the unlimited chances! he sells egg
During his lectures, he does homework problems and emphasizes on important formulas. There is only one midterm and one final. When I had him, the tests were take home and had to submit them in single PDFs. The grade has more emphasis on homework. If you do better on the final, then that score replaces the midterm. You may be put in a group.
I would not recommend this class to be taken over summer without a strong algebra foundation. The lectures are held 4 times a week and can be upwards to 4.5 hours with homework. Lavallo teaches by doing example problems but does not fully break down concepts in structured lesson plans which did not work for me. He is very passionate about teaching.
Genuinely cares about his students and teaching. Is a practical person and accepts the usage of modern technology in his lectures and exams, but the questions are more difficult so it's useless if you don't conceptually understand what you're doing. Make sure you bring a charged laptop to exams so you don't spend all your time doing algebra.
He likes to put in definitions in the first exam, but then he puts less of it in exam 2 and almost none on the final exam, which isn't very consistent (preferred less definitions like the final exam). But , he puts in genuine effort in his lectures (making sure it works) and exam are open book. HW and review quizzes are not hard but it's tedious.
Made linear algebra super digestible as a summer class and very understanding. Was always open to slow down and answer questions and explain things in different ways, and was fun with the occasional tangent. :)
He is a great teacher! Clear lectures and very kind! Please take him if you really want to learn :)
I had Mr. Lavallo for Precalc with Trig online in the summer session. What I learned from him this summer was how to use Desmos effectively. I have to say, most of what I learned was from Khan Academy & MyMathLab. He digresses from the topic way too often. If you do not know the concepts beforehand, this class will be extremely hard. Good luck!
Mr. Lavallo made himself accessible outside class but took a long time to respond to any emails I sent him. The final was tough; I got an 85% despite having gotten above 98% on the quizzes. If you have a good background on the topic beforehand, this class will be just right for you. If you're like me and didn't know much, good luck.
Mr. Lavallo has been one of my favorite math professors. His genuine passion for math always shines through his lectures, even through online zoom calls. He's always open to answer questions and even go on math tangents if you ask him too! I love his energy as well as his clear explanations of dense mathematical concepts from the textbook.
Great professor. Took his class during summer as a fast paced Linear Algebra class, and he worked through the technical difficulty, and really helped every single student. Would certainly take his class again. Do yourself a favor and take this prof. You will get a fair grade depending on the amount of effort you put in.
Took class online over the summer. Lots of homework but could redo problems for full credit. Quizzes/tests were difficult and lengthy but still manageable to get a good grade. The final was extremely hard for the amount of time given. There were daily lectures but I went ahead and did homework the whole time and was fine. Overall really nice guy.
Genuinely cares about math and teaching. Took this over summer and did the homework during all the lectures and basically taught myself the whole class. Would spend hours on homework after class and even longer taking tests. No clear lecture structure just lots of practice problems. Heavy work load but great guy with passion for math.
The class isn't an easy A class but it isn't hard either. Definitely doable. You have to put in effort. Do all the homework, attend lecture, study a lot for the exams and you should be fine. As long as you understand the problems gone over in class, you should be fine. Don't memorize! Make sure you understand the topics to a deeper level.
I got C because I was sick and I didnt engage as much. the class is hard but Professor Pat makes it easier. he knows the material very well and he always available for students even for one to one meeting. I never had a Professor like him that made Math as easy as him. he will make you to enjoy doing math. I dont mind taking 100 classes with him.
I took this course with Professor Lavallo over the summer so it was pretty lecture heavy but I enjoyed the lectures. I like how he explained through examples and the quizzes and exams were very fair!
No graded hw, he records his lectures then posts them for you to watch on your own. Used MyMathLab where he assigns 20 questions on quizzes that have multiple parts to them, and all of them are 1pt each. Means easy and hard questions are 1 pt. Final was 46 problems with multiple parts, gave us 3 hrs, i got to question 33 when i ran out of time.
precalc isn't hard but for those wanting to be in a class where they are aware of what they have during the semester in terms of grades, don't take him for MAT 2. The quizzes are easy because they're the same as the homework, there's only two tests during the semester and the final is 3 hours for around 40 questions. He does not respond to emails.
I struggled quite a bit in his class but that might be only me as I struggle with math. Professor Lavallo was always available to help you with any questions you had. A little disappointed as he didn't let us use a cheat sheet on the final.
Professor Lavallo is very approachable/accessible, the material is just pretty hard. Grades are based off three tests and a final. Homework doesn't count toward your grade, no extra credit is offered, and there aren't any quizzes. Tests are curved, so far the average has been 50%. I would recommended tutors/study groups/lots of study hours
Lavallo is a nice and laidback guy but not the best professor. He will be on Desmos for a lot of your class and expect you to do what he calls 'monkey work' on your own without his help. MML is a good resource he uses but he could do a lot more to help his students out.
Great professor!
Don't use the pdf book he provides because it doesn't provide the video lectures that the author of the book made. I never watched one of Prof's lectures, I just used MyMathLab, clicked on the hw assignment, clicked on the text book option on the bottom of screen and the book provides their own lectures. 4 hours per lesson=A+. 32 lessons total.
If you're someone who struggles with math or doesn't have a strong math foundation please don't take this class especially not online lol. The prof ONLY grades based on tests and there's only three test and the final. Really hard to get your grade up if you bomb one test. He also doesn't teach so a lot of it is self learning!
Mr. Lavallo is an excellent math teacher with a very practical approach. Pros: HW isn't graded so there's no stress to get it done. Exams are very similar to the practice ones he gives. Provides logic to the lessons so you can understand the abstract ideas. Available outside of class. Cons: class was online sync. Do the work, you'll get an A!!!
I found the reviews on this site unreliable as 4C with this professor is extremely difficult. Lots of homework (DON'T procrastinate), basically a self-study course (lectures were abstract/extremely hard to follow, I learned through YouTube). Positive: generous curve at the end. To succeed, you need to be self-disciplined and an independent learner.
Mr. Lavallo is an excellent professor with extensive knowledge. He makes mathematical concepts relatable to practical life applications. But Heavily relying on DESMOS for problem explanations can leave some students needing more thorough explanations.Almost two hours of group work can be less effective if students struggle to learn from each other.
The only people that will struggle in this class are those who don't use the book and the videos in the book. To access the real book (not the pdf of it that he gives in canvas), go to the homework, go to the bottom left screen, click on more and textbook then you'll have the textbook with videos that show how to answer the problems DO this for A+
This class is challenging, but Pat is a great instructor and is willing to help when you need it. You have to do all of the homework and not procrastinate. The test isn't so hard. I took this course in Spring 2024, and I will definitely recommend it. I will also retake it if Pat ever teaches any other courses.
A walking encyclopedia of Math and Physics! His classes offer deep learning but can be intensely stressful. He shows respect through rigorous teaching rather than flattery. Abstract ideas → easier concepts. He encourages true understanding and generously shares his knowledge with students. And trust me—his knowledge is EXTENSIVE!
He wants you to truly learn, so don't expect a high grade if you even don't pay any attention or effort. He's awesome, and his classes are very informative. You can only hate him for one reason: he's not easy-going, and that's it. It's acceptable because it's for students' sake.
As long as you complete all the assignments and practice tests on the expected milestone dates, you'll do pretty well on the exams. Professor Lavallo is a really nice guy and I highly recommend this professor for anyone that likes online classes and are pretty good at math!!
Amazing teacher. Made Calculus so easy to learn. I would take every single one of his math courses if I could. But, just don't take him for online classes though. Since, he won't be teaching, it would be 100% online. But, I would love to take him for all his in person classes. Lectures are so easy to follow along, you don't need a textbook.
This and precalc (Math 2) were my first real experiences with MyMathLab. Even though these were courses where this professor was mostly hands-off from the students, the study strategies he recommended were surprisingly effective. He also replaces the test of lowest score with the final exam score and curves up the grade at the end.
This professor had the homework deadlines at the semester's end. Just do the homework and you can easily pass the class. His lectures were interesting, but it didn't help that he was left-handed, so there was no point in taking notes. Also, he posted his notes on Canvas, which is a great way to review.
This guy be talking about the most random stuff sometimes like how he goes to China or something like that which made his class something to look forward to. Also he heavily curves every test and even the final, giving out partial credit too.
He's alright. Not good for online since MyMathLab does most of the work. Don't recommend.
I can't really say much to his grading since I took an asynchronous class, so mylab math did most of the grading. The grading distribution was probably the worst thing about him, since 3 tests determine 90% of your grade.
