EXTREMELY BORING CLASS! If you like taking naps this is the class for you! She is VERY passionate about Art History and knows her S**T so if you love the subject she'd be a great prof... if not, I don't recommend her.
She's very passionate about what she teaches, blame yourself if you think it's boring. I think she's one of the best art history teachers at SCAD.
I agree with the last person, she's definately passionate about ancient art and you must blame yourself for not going into it with a clear mind set. She has very interesting story b/c she was an archeologist and has a lot of knowledge to share.. def. knows her stuff. Very sweet and likable lady!
Knows her stuff, very passionate, but unless you are really interested in ancient art history, you'll most likely be bored because she's not a great lecturer. Very sweet though. The tests are difficult.
the tests will make you feel like a complete idiot, but stick it out... she's a generous grader at the end.... you'll always get an "A" for effort and showing interest

SERIOUSLY, SMARTEST ART HISTORY TEACHER IN THE DEPARTMENT.
Butz knows her stuff. It can be a bit of a bore, but hell, its survey 1. If you take good notes and pay attention you can get a lot from this class. I cant wait to take her ancient egyptian class.
Prof. Butz is so nice. On the first day you have her, you'll see her and be like "oh****" because she looks mean, but she's not. She's incredibly nice and helpful and really likes what she does. She knows a lot and if you stay awake and keep notes you'll be fine. She goes easy on the essay grading, which is nice.
She knows what she is talking about. Sometimes too much details. You have three tests and a paper. The last exam is not cumulative. The paper is 5 pages long on some piece here in Savannah. She also gives 4 'special readings'. READ THEM. She always puts an essay question based on them. STUDY FOR THE TESTS!
She was awesome. I hated Art History before this class. You have to be willing to work semi-hard for an A though.
Excellent. She clearly loves her subject which shows in her delivery. Extremely fair on tests, essays, etc.
I had Professor Butz for my first Art History class and I'm so thankful I had an opportunity to take her. She really got me to appreciate what I was learning about. Her tests are relatively difficult, but she gives a clear study guide. As long as you pay attention and look over the material she gives you'll be fine. She's Great!
She is the most terrible professor ever. I had her as a visiting professor in the Classics Department at Yale University. Horrible. This woman should be banished from education.
She is such a nice woman. Her class can be pretty boring, and its hard to follow her sometimes, but other than that if you can stay awake and pay attention you do good. She's very helpful and so sweet. Very easy. If you like the subject and know some history already I'd reccommend her.
Butz is a great professor. She really knows what she is talking about and is genuinely interested in the subject matter, so she talks with passion. If you show up for class you will know everything you need to know for the test. Definitely take her for Survey 1 if you get the chance.
Had her for Survey I. I generally do well in art history, b/c i usually enjoy it. With that said, I really enjoyed her. She has occupational experience in ancient art and is really passionate about it. She is also very passionate about teaching and helping folks make the grade.
This woman is SOO nice. Her tests are simple but you HAVE TO STUDY. She does give a study guide. The whole test is multiple choice with two essays based on comparisons and special readings. GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTETION! Bring your laptop! There is a small paper and three tests. She gives an extra credit opportunity. Recommended!
This woman is terrible...GOD AWFUL. Her tests are ok if you are interested in pure memorization of 5 page study guides, a large amount of tricky multiple choice, and 4 essay questions that are literally so vague you have difficulty answering the prompt at all. Not to mention the research paper and oral all due within the span of 2/3 weeks.MISERABL
Prof. Butz is good, she really knows her stuff and is quite fair on test compared with what I've heard aboutother art history professors.
This class is not easy by any means but it is amazing. Professor Butz is one of the nicest professors I've ever had and she makes sure the class is interesting, and also that you learn a lot.
Very nice woman. Class is pretty boring, and she doesn't stress important points very well. She is very helpful though. Gives a study guide. you must study. offers one extra credit assignment. there is a paper that is worth a good bit of grade, but have pretty good bit of time to work on it.
She's quiet but a very nice woman. I personally, along with the rest of my corner of the room, found the class extremely boring, but there are no surprises to trip you up and if you follow the basic rules (pay attention, take notes, study) you'll easily get a B. Tests were hard but she's a very fair grader. If you can stay awake, it's not bad.
My favorite professor during my first quarter at SCAD! She is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about art history. She really WANTS her students to learn what she knows, and will help you however she can, so just ask! Make sure you read the textbook, so you have some background before she lectures. Reading makes Butz's class so much easier.
First of all, she is a very nice woman and excellent teacher. But I think our class decided she reminded us of Shatner.
Butz is absolutely awesome I have her right now for Survey of Western Arts I and she really knows her stuff. The Greek chapter gets pretty long but as long as you pay attention and take plenty of notes you'll do fine in the class. Take her!
DO NOT TAKE ARTH100 WITH HER! Found the material quite boring (although i'm glad this class is required). On top of that her teaching style is SO boring and she's quite unrelatable. She's an EXTREMELY smart lady who rambles because she has a DR in this material. Nice lady but class was a PAIN.
As good as art history gets. This professor is an expert in her area, and although I don't generally enjoy art history, I would take any class she offered. Her tests are quite easy as far as art history goes, with both multiple choice and essays. There's even a brief extra credit section. I loved this class
Butz knows her stuff!!! and she is so nice. she will help you if yu talk to her. Take lots of notes and do not cram the day before a test. The tests are pretty challenging! liked the class a lot though! :)
Excellent Art History professor. She loves what she does and knows it well, has a clear passion for the history and wants everyone to do well. You do have to work in her class, but isn't big on dates and as long as you do the reading and study, you'll be fine.
At first I loathed this class with a passion. After I started to really pay attention and studied for the exams, I understood everything. And Butz is to die for..she will kill you with how adorable she is. Ask about her cat, she will love you forever.
If you can enjoy Art History I applaud you. Butz is very knowledgeable. Her class is difficult and you will learn a lot if you can force yourself to stay awake. She expects a lot. Butz doesn't make art history fun. Her class is a great place to take a nap.
She really wants all of her students to do well, I didn't do great on my tests (thought I was really struggling) and still managed a B. Only grades are 3 exams, 1 4.5-5 page paper, and 1 easy participation grade. A lot of reading and memorizing, I'm really not into ARTH, would recommend looking for an easier prof. if you also aren't into ARTH.
Always willing to help you, and once you read the text and take notes you'll do well.
I'm not good at history, so I'd have to study a lot with any teacher. Butz is very knowledgeable about her subject though, and is really interested in seeing you do well. It was a lot of work but I learned a lot, and I recommend her to anyone who needs to take art history!
Butz class is really hard. BUT she is a really nice lady and she wants you to do well. I failed every test and managed a C. You have to study really hard and it is a boring class.
I somehow managed an A in this class even though I dislike history. She is a very sweet women but her teaching style is extremely bland... anyone who says they never fell asleep during this class is flat out lying. TIP: she loves talking about her cat. If you want a break from the history, just get her talking about the cat.
She was really nice and sooooo sweet! Talk to her, and she'll love you! She's very very interested and enthusiastic about what she teaches. Honestly, one of my favorite teachers so far
I can't stand the way she uses class time. She talks about a field trip or papers topics for an hour, then takes a 30 min break, and when she lectured she jumps from one thing to another, so it's hard to take notes. Her tests are hard because you have to teach yourself the information because she wastes class time with unrelated stuff.
One of my favorite teachers. Im a performing arts major, and she makes this class so interesting, even for me! She expects you to read the book, but the tests are mainly on the slides she uses in class and vocab she talks about in class, but study. study guide has EVERYTHING you need to know. NOTE: greek test is the hardest! Study hard for that one
I absolutely LOVE Professor Butz! She is a sweet lady and is very willing to help anyone out when asked! Her tests are ALL multiple choice plus 3 essays. You will have 1 mandatory paper and the requirements are not bad! It is a tough course but Butz has amazing study guides that tell you what is exactly on the test. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
One of my FAVORITE professors at SCAD. She expects you to work and is so passionate about the subjects she teaches. She wants you to do well and will help. Not a class to take if you're looking for an easy elective.
Butz is very passionate about history and makes it interesting. She is always there for extra help and will take the time to answer any questions. Very traditional teaching style and assigns a 6 page descriptive paper.
A lot of people seem to think this class is boring. However, if you listen to Dr. Butz (and I mean reallly listen) lecture, it really is not boring at all! It's quite remarkable how much she knows... I never thought I'd be interested in an Art History class until after taking hers. I'd recommend her to anyone taking ARTH.
She is a really sweet, you will learn a lot, you have to put the time in to study if you want to get a good grade. Enjoyed her class very much. Would definitely recommend.
Very Good Professor. Shes really nice, passionate about what she teaches, and very clear. Expect a lot of studying however. She doesn't assign any homework other than studying for the tests. She sticks along to a study guide though, so if you follow that you'll do fine
A very great and passionate lady. She absolutely loves what she teaches and you can tell. I never bought the book and still got a B+. Ask her about her cats. Get to know her. Do the extra credit essay, it brought me up a whole letter grade. Start studying for the test as soon as you get the study guide, super hard tests. But, she is the cutest.
Prior to this class, I had no knowledge whatsoever of Western Art History (Greek, Aegean) You will be amazed at the sheer knowledge Butz has. Tests are ok if you STUDY & PAY attention in class (try not to fall asleep) Mcq is tricky. Being outspoken during class discussion is a plus,if not, prepare to write a good essay. Take her if you wanna learn!
This teacher was average in my opinion and many people agreed. She is very passionate about some art, and tends to always lean towards that. She's teaches very well, but your grade reflects on three exams and one paper. On the paper she's a grammar nazi so I got a C and I struggled to get a B in the class but she's sweet and understanding.
Very nice lady. Very passionate about her subject. Kinda gets off course when doing lectures and tests might as well be finals. Makes you memorize a bunch of slides but only uses one or two on a test.
She's really, really passionate about her subject - and that's great. But if you're not, it can be a little painful come test time. Seriously though, study like you've never studied before, and make sure to read the chapters.
I thought this class would be more about GREEK mythology but it kind of wasn't. It was more about Greece its self. Not really an interesting class. Most of our test were take home but that was her first time doing that. She is very passionate about the subject. Not really an interesting class tho.
She was always there to help via email or office hours all you have to do is try!
If you are looking for a class to focus solely on Greek Mythology Art, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It will be very boring. This class was not as interested as I thought it would be. She is a very sweet lady and very passionate about GREECE itself but not very interesting. 2 TestMidterm+Final exams, both were take home test w/ various essays & 1 paper.
Ms. Butz is a well versed english major and archaeologist. She is passionate about her field, and is very sweet. However, her lectures can be long, but take notes. She only had 3 tests, a final, and two papers (beware she is a grammar hunter). She holds review sessions. Bring the study guide thats whats ONLY on the test, she will give the answers.
I took Professor Butz during the Fall 2015 quarter. Even though I can tell she was really passionate and went into detail with what she was teaching, I found it so hard to stay awake in her class because of her droning voice. Her tests are difficult; read each question carefully! She is super helpful when you ask for help so don't hesitate to do so
Prof Butz is a sweet lady. She LOVES art history more than anyone, which means she expects you to memorize a lot because she believes it is ALL necessary to know. She is there to help if you need it, and usually conducts an extra help session the weekend before an exam. There aren't many exams/papers, so they all cost a large chunk of your grade.
Very passionate about what she does, but has very long and boring lectures that can be hard to pay attention in. But overall, a very sweet older lady who just wants to help.
Butz is a great professor. Tests are tough, always includes 3 essays along with ID's and multiple choice so be aware of that going into this course. She wants you to succeed, as long as she knows your trying. GO TO HER FOR HELP! She really saved my grade for a couple assignments. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA CREDIT! WOULD TAKE AGAIN.
She doesn't give a lot of grades so don't mess up on anything, also there is an insane amount of information that goes onto the tests so prepare to take a ton of time to study.
Butz is probably the most well educated woman I have ever met and she is so beyond passionate about what she's teaching, she's just not so good at teaching it. All she does is give lectures and expect you to just take it all in. She's such a kind hearted and adorable woman though, you can't even be mad when you get a bad grade.
Patricia Butz is a marvelous and inspiring professor. If you are unsure about Art History, she will make you appreciate it with her incredible knowledge and enthusiasm. Her exams are fair and need some preparation. She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. She is a MUST take.
She is a very nice woman, but her teaching style was not for me. Lots of tangents and few ways to solidify the basic information (artist, title, date), i.e. not written on slides/said in passing. Midterm (test) and Final (take-home essay), one 7-page paper, presentation on paper, and multiple discussions requiring written questions/comments.
It's mainly lecturing and out of class readings. She's a nice lady who'll work with you, but she doesn't always get grades out on time. Pretty difficult tests but she gives a good amount of extra credit opportunities.
Butz is a great teacher! She only has 2 tests and one essay along with extra credit and a field trip report. I got an A on each test but it required lots of memorization and studying. She offers lots of extra credit point on her tests as well as addition assignments. I found the lectures a bit boring, but she is extremely passionate!
Prof. Butz is very passionate and knowledgable about art history. She does go over quite a bit of information in her class, and expects you to know it on the test, but she always gives grading breaks where she can. Be ready to read and pay attention in class, if you want to earn a passing grade!
I adored her class; the material was extremely interesting and she was very knowledgable about the subject. She does expect you to memorize dates and names to some extent, but she focuses more on writing than anything.
Prof. Butz is one of the smartest and passionate people I've ever met. She only has 2 tests and 2 papers so each is worth a lot of ur grade! lots of extra credit opportunities. Note taking is critical! I love her class and I'd def take her again. Wouldn't rec. to people who slack off or don't like history. I learned so much from her!
Prof. Butz is one of the smartest and most passionate teachers Ive ever had and it was such a pleasure and an honor learning from her. Even though she strayed way off the syllabus, it was because she had too much to say and in the end, I learned more because of it. FYI: 1st test focus on what the art looks like, 2nd focus on artist names and dates
I really like her class! We only have two exams, one paper, and one presentation throughout the entire quarter. The exam itself is not easy, but as long as you read the book, pay little attention to the lecture, you can get a good mark. She also gives out the study guide for exams. Overall, pretty good!
Amazing professor. Super passionate about art history. Tons of lectures in this class, and the tests cover a lot of information, so expect to have to study a lot for each one. She rewards good writing skills and is always extremely generous with bonus points on the tests.
The teacher is nice enough but the class is not interesting. You can tell that she is passionate about what she teaches and she will answer all questions you have but the whole class consists of listening to her repeat what you read the night before so there is no reason to read the text book. Tests are very difficult and you MUST study hard to pas
Professor Butz was so passionate about Art History and I loved her lectures. However, the tests were so long and required way too much memorization. There were 2-3 full essays at the end of both tests. The only grades were two tests, two essays, one presentation, and participation/discussion. Loved the teacher, hated the class.
Dr. Butz is one of the most caring and understand professors I have had at SCAD. She realizes that not every student shares the same passion for Art History as her and she tries her hardest to create interesting lectures that engage the class. Her class is test heavy, but she gives extra credit and other assignments to even everything out.
Super passionate about what she does and she's really just a great person all around. She totally lights up when students express interest in art history. Overall, I think her class was hard but do-able. Her lectures can be a bit dry at times and her tests were hard. She's kinda a stickler for formatting on papers but still a good class.
Super passionate about her lectures, and this passion makes it interesting to be in her class. She made this class easy to comprehend but also allowing us to have our own opinion about the different artefacts. Memorise the artefacts on the study guide and there is no way you would not do well in this class. Engaging lectures.
Prof Butz is AMAZING! she's so passionate about art history! can go off about one specific thing for the whole class period because she has so much to say about anything historic! will always help you out if you need! ps. I didn't read the book at all, just listened to her lectures and still got an A in the class. the book is pricey just saying
Doesn't go by the syllabus, wasn't there during her stated office hours, no clear grading criteria or rubric for her assignments which makes it really hard to do well on an assignment, tells you to buy a writers' manual and then doesn't even go according to its instructions. I'm sure she's a great art historian but some people shouldn't teach.
Prof Butz is very nice and helpful. she understands that not all of us care for art history, but you do have to read chapters from the textbooks and take notes in class to pass the tests. very straightforward and easy, but if you dont do the work you wont pass.
I really enjoyed Professor Butz. A unique, quirky, sweet person and tries to really engage her students. Really into the lectures and is very thorough. Her tests are easy if you use her excellent study guide, ask questions if you have them and just communicate. Fair grader and is always willing to help you if she can! A really relaxing atmosphere.
Dr Butz is really interested in the material she is teaching. There is only one essay for the class, and it is written on a monument of your choice. You absolutely need to study for the tests. You don't really need to read for her class, but that means you need to pay attention to the lectures.
Professor Butz is a great Art History Professor. She is very passionate about her lectures, teaching, and profession. The class is all lectures with few tests but you are given a few extra credit opportunities. I would definitely recommend Professor Butz for Art History.
If you do not have any interest in Art History, I would not advise this class for you. The lectures are long and hard to follow, especially with the lights turned off it is easy to fall asleep (trust me). Prof grades hard and you only have a few grading opportunities so mess up on one grade and good luck.
okay yall... Im gonna tell yall straight up I failed both exams and ended up with a B. The exams are super hard but if you do well on the two essays and presentation (also an extra credit essay thats optional) you can still pass this class. good luck though
She is a super smart teacher, but being online in this class was tough because I never got ample feedback, especially when my grades were poor. You definitely need to work hard to be in this class!
Her class is pretty easy. Make sure you get the textbook, the assignments are all from the text. Mainly discussion posts and three 800 (max) word papers the whole quarter. You get more than one attempt at quizzes. She is a little slow replying to emails but I think she's just busy. She truly does seem to care. Very sweet, easy grade.
Professor Butz is a solid first option for your first art history class. You know what to expect ahead of time. I found myself relying on the readings more so than her lectures. Her quizzes were easy and were always based around vocab she told you ahead of time. My only complaint was that the final paper was a little confusing.
She is 1 of my favorites professors! You really need your book for discussions (1 per week). I wouldn't read the whole chapter unless you want to. Take sections you need and use the Turabian Citation Machine. She really cares about those! She is really kind and wants you to succeed. She knows what she is talking about and loves her work! Love her!!
She's clearly an intelligent person, and has a burning passion for the subject, but she shouldn't be a teacher. She will grill you about a late assignment but take months to grade that assignment, she cares more about everything being done perfectly than making sure you're doing well, and comes off as a warden rather than a teacher.
Professor Butz is a really good teacher and is super knowledgeable about what she teaches. I had her for CTXT 121 and we basically lived off the textbook. This class takes a lot of hard work to complete weekly discussion posts. That being said, we had no tests. Don't take if you don't like writing, but the workload isn't too bad!
Very nice and has a lovely personality, however, her rubrics are unclear and she doesn't grade things in a timely manner. There were a few essays that were extremely easy. The discussion posts were confusing because there was no specific rubric to go by. The textbook is definitely required and used.
she knows what she's talking about but she doesn't actually teach anything and just plays old documentaries most of the time. she'll tell you to email her if you have an issue or need help but she'll just belittle you and basically tell you it's your fault and you've gotta figure it out yourself.
Dr. Butz is passionate, but she does NOT stick to the syllabus at all. For three classes we ended up going over a textbook that she changed last minute. She goes on tangents when one question is asked, and there are NO visuals or powerpoints, which made this class extremely inaccessible and difficult to follow. Save your $4000 - don't take 357.
Professor Butz likes to lecture the whole Class She lives by the Text book everything you do will be from the textbook. She Only does weekly Discussion Posts and 3 Single Page Papers the whole Class; However you have to be able to use Turabian style citations she is a stickler about that. All together I LOVED HER CLASS shes is a super nice teacher!
Prof. Butz mainly sticks with the textbook all quarter. Most of the classes are her either talking about the textbook or watching a documentary. The weekly discussion posts are pretty easy as long as you have an understanding of it and use Turabian style to cite everything. Field trip reports are one page long so it's not terrible.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is genuinely the most inconsiderate, disrespectful professor ive ever met. For the discussion posts, she barely cares about the content. She only pays attention that it is correctly cited and formatted. She will belittle you and blame you if you have any sort of problem or question. She doesnt care about MENTAL HEALTH!!
the lectures were so boring and our exams consisted of 3 or more essays. i really disliked her style of teaching considering how long the lectures were. it was hard to stay awake most of the time
Nice lady but bad at teaching. She talks nonstop with no clarifications. Changed the syllabus 6 times and ended up changing the whole midterm 4 days before it happened. Extremely disorganized and chaotic, this class gave everyone in it anxiety. She will ruin egyptian art for you.
She clearly loves what shes talking about but doesnt know how to teach it. Everything I have gotten out of her class I got from the textbook. She also doesnt use a rubric for any of her grading, which is all papers (short ones) and her instructions are often unclear at best.
Her lectures are tough to endure, as most of the time she just stands in front of the class and talks. It can be engaging if people get involved with the discussion but that rarely happens. As long as you follow Turabian and pull some stuff from the textbook you'll be fine for the weekly discussion posts.
Lectures are extremely boring and she trails off way too often - talking about one thing, then just starting with something new without even finishing the sentence. Discussion boards every week but no tests, so you technically don't have to pay any attention in class and just read a specific page before writing the discussion (which is what I did).
This is the easiest class i've ever taken. She is so passionate about the details of things and rambles on for hours. She enjoys students that share in her passion but is nice to everyone. She is an easy grader and I could literally still have an A if I did not show up. If I was obsessed with Art History then I would not take this class.
Prof. Butz is a truly amazing Art History professor. In the subject of Art history, her class is very easy. It's a lot of reading but only had one paper and one test. She is super into the material which makes it easier to get into it as well. It is still art history so lecture heavy but I would take her again 100%.
Her class is super boring, with Professor Butz lecturing almost all class, every class. She goes on lots of tangents. That being said, she doesn't test, and as long as you are decent at writing you'll be fine, as that is basically all the graded work. Lots of citations and weekly discussion posts.
Professor Butz selects the text book, but it is on you to read it. If you don't read the textbook/assigned readings and take extensive notes, you WILL fail this class. Pay attention to the syllabus for readings, but know that she will change due dates multiple times and there's nothing you can do about it. A friendly lady, but a terrible professor.
She was unprepared, not tech savvy and often got lost in lectures waxing poetic about languages instead of teaching us herself about CTXT. There were only a handful of assignments, mostly the weekly discussion posts determined your grades. I feel like I wasted 10 weeks in her class. Herstand hall is cursed ground, beware.
The hardest assignment in the class is to stay awake. BEWARE FOR EXTREMELY HEAVY LECTURES and BE PREPARED TO BRING A PILLOW.
Professor Butz is very knowledge and passionate about Art History. She is one of the kindest professors I've had at CSUN. Her lectures can get boring sometimes but that also depends on the class. If everyone stays quite while she asks questions and tries engage and discuss the artwork, then of course the lectures won't be as enjoyable.
