I enjoyed her as a professor, she wants to make sure that you learn everything you need to in order to get to the next phase in English. Yea she may nit-pick, but it's for your own good. I do recommend her even though she is tougher than other professors.
Easy until the C paper. She says you are doing great and you'll get an A, then when you get to that point and turn in your B paper she will expect you to know things she never taught you. Very difficult.
Although the class is a little diffucult, she is a great teacher... She is funny and makes everything really clear.
Nice teacher, the class is just insanely easy though
Helpful teacher. You just have to study the stories before class and you'll do just fine. She's great :)

helps clarify objective in classes. reviews stories with you. clear on what she wants, somewhat helpful on how she wants it. always in office hour/scheduled appointment.
THE ONLY ITEM I THOUGHT WAS HARD IN THIS CLASS WAS THE C-TEST. SHE GRADES PAPERS STRICT THOUGH, SO WATCH OUT!
Very good instructor. Helps you to actually learn something in her class. Although very strict on papers accepted. Communicate and you'll be good.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. She is not helpful what so ever. I've had my papers checked by tutors and they still didn't get accepted.
She can be a bit intimidating to speak to but basically spells out exactly how you are supposed to write the papers, just follow the form she gives you and you should be fine. It seemed to me that form mattered a little more than content so stick to it. If you are good she will treat you well so participate and stick to the paper form!!!
She told me that it wasn't worth it for me to take the C test which forced me to withdraw from the class. She also wouldn't tell me what was wrong with my papers, so I didn't know how to improve them in order for her to accept them. She was late everyday and wasn't in her office during office hours. Horrible teacher, don't take her class!
Yes, she's a difficult teacher to work with. You will only get a good grade if you do EXACTLY what she's detailed in class. However, if you attend class and listen well, the C-Test will be a breeze. Many of my classmates had a really difficult time with this class (or dropped); English is my favorite (and best)subject, and I still barely got a B.
Really strict and difficult.
She is tough. She makes you do alot of work. You have a paper due like every week. she is tough.
I love this teacher. She is so helpful. She gives very very helpful handouts for each paper, which has the paper basicly outlined for you and even some sentences. If you go to every single class you will pass and learn something. She is very willing to help and super nice when you actually get to know her.
I had this prof a few years ago but i took her for as many classes as i could. yes she is difficult and tough, but it's for your benefit. go to her office and talk with her - all she does is make you think. what a concept...
she is tough. you write multiple papers, one like each week, but shes fun in class and does the paper like right on the board in front of you. all she wants you to do is think and use your mind. MAKE SURE YOU READ!! I liked her overall
Didn't seem very interested in helping students.
she is tough. it seems easy peasy in the beginning but she is exremely picky and everything has the be the way she wants it or else she will return it to you and make you rewrite it. she makes it seem easy, but getting points for each paper in order to pass is very difficult. i will never take her again.
The class is a little difficult, she is very picky and will returne your paper if it is not how she wants it. The book is very helpful, it has templets and examples that you can use word for word in your essay. If you are looking to improve your writing then this is the class. Overall great teacher...but a challenge.
She seems like a great professor until you actually need her help, at which point she just patronizes and belittles you.
in class she is very fun! (on a good day) she is not always clear on everything but I liked her. She makes you think. Make sure you use her templates!! Write the way she wants and you'll be okay. You do write paper after paper but she lets you re-write all!
This professor is halirious! She is soo easy, she basically tells u how to write your paper, all other comments are wrong, if u actually think & use ur mind and care abou the class she will help. She is a very nice person and I got As in 1301&1302. She continues to write letters of rec. for scholarships for me. Man up u could use discipline.
very helpful, understanding and avaliable. uses lots of handouts to show you how to put your paper together.
really cool--let me turn in a few late papers without losing any points. You can easily pass her copurse if you follow her instructions. Good job! I plan to taking her for comp 2 and lit.
She uses a lot of handouts that are very helpful for writing the papers the way she wants them. You can get help any time during her office hours she doesn't make you make an appointment and the tutors are helpful too.
I took both comp i and comp ii with this teacher and wish she would teach a literature class. she is fair but expects student to be prepared. do the readings and pay attention and get her help. you can get an easy A!
she's very helpful with the concepts abot stories. She makes the conection between your life and the ideas so its easier to understand. you can get help and the class is fun but makes you work.
She'll answer your questions, but make you feel like an idiot for having to ask. I love English; it's the one class I'm good at, but she made me hate reading and writing for four solid months because you have no idea whatsoever what she expects you to learn. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
her syllabus tells you everything you need to do every day. you are never confused with what she wants if you use the handouts she gives you and they are avaliable online in blackboard.
I couldn't get in her class and she helped me get my schedule worked out. she will help you when you need it. very helpful and nice!
she is funny and interesting and lets you write about things you are interested in. Other profs would grade me down because I didn't agree with them but she helped me make my argument stronger. Awesome!
This professor was always helpful. I live in Buda and wasnt alwys in class and she let me send her my papers in email. She was nice about due dates and the late paper coupon is a great iudea!
She was really understanding when i told her my other teacher failed me becaue i did not get the c test taken on time. she let me use the papers i had aleready wrote with some few changes for her class and then i went on to take the test. Very cool!
The class is easy because she gives you so much extra credit work so you can eanr a better grade. Easy!
You have to read the storiesor you cannot do the work in class--shes a real stickler for being prepared to analysis the stories. if you read and follow her outlines its wasy and even fun.
Take this class if you want to learn something. I took comp i with an instructor who made class funny and accepted everything I wrote--I got an A from him, but I didn't learn anything and it was really hard for me to write papers in all my classes after comp i. garcia will teach you how to write successful papers. Awesome!
Prof's action demonstrates lack of not wanting to answer questions in spite of what is in writing. But, she will give you many handouts for assignments in order for you to figure it out for yourself. Somewhere between turning in anything & it being accepted vs. not answering questions there must be a balance. I found this professor's teaching style
Yeah, there's alot of handouts but if you use them and ask questions about them she is very helful. Don't ask about stuff in the syllabus like due dates!
great teacher
Awesome! Very interesting class on short stories--not too fussy about stuff if you pay attention to the instructions. yeah, read the syllabus and the handouts before you ask a question about due dates--very clear instructions! Just read the hadnouts.
Excellent.
Cool teacher--lets you use your own ideas and really makes you think. I appreciate being able to learn on my own and use my own ideas rather than being told what to think. Cool :)
She is helpful though you have to read alot and follow the instructions. I also missed several classes and still got an A--just do the work and its easy to get a A.
I don't know how anyone fails this class! She has this late paper coupon that lets you turn in a late paper with no penalty but I turned in several late papers and corrected a couple afterward. Easy dude!
If you have the slightest trouble with english.. do not get her for your teacher. She is very strict.
I don't know how anyone fails this class! She has this late paper coupon that lets you turn in a late paper with no penalty but I turned in several late papers and corrected a couple afterward. Easy dude!
She was hard, and was rather mean in class. However, if you see her during her office hours she is very helpful and nicer. If you show effort and put in good work she will help you do your best.
She is very firm but very fair. Take this class seriously and you'll learn a lot. She doesn't budge on her policies so don't test her. If you want to just cross this class off of your "required" list then find a different professor. If you want to learn how to write well, she's the one you're looking for.
Do not take this class if you don't show any effort or interest in being successful. She works as hard as you do and will help you a lot--lots of extra credit points for just doing your work. Easy A!
Just do the papers just like the handouts and the sample papers and you'll be fine. Don't ask stuff that can be answered by reading the syllabus! Easy A!
I don't see why professor Garcia has gotten so many bad reviews. If you come to class prepared and do the work according to her guidelines, which are always very clear, it is not a hard class. She is very helpful during her office hours if you come to her with specific questions, and she gives out lots of helpful handouts and instructions in class.
She is very unclear as to what she expects from the students. If you have a question she tells you to "read the syllabus". On my papers she told me to go see a tutor, after many visits with tutors and countless hours she would hand back the paper and say I still need to go to a tutor! She always talks about GOLF, and does not teach. Do NOT take her
Professor Garcia was very clear and to the point, she always responded to intelligent questions. At first she was very intimidating, but she warmed up to her students. If your looking for an easy A, dont take her class, if your looking for a good learning experience take her class.
Very helpful. Goes beyond expectations to make sure you know what to do. Easy A!
In class, she's very direct and to the point. Has little tolerance for repetitive questions. Went to her office hours and she wasn't there the first time, second time she had little patience and was very patronizing. Good teacher, just do what she asks of you and avoid seeing her in office. Her true colors come out then and it's not pretty.
I took this Professor Garcia's online class, and every time I sent her a email she would reply "Check the syllabus" or "Check the schedule." There was no online lecture or help with her class, when I would send her a email the response was felt like I was bothering her.
Professor Garcia was very helpful and very understandable to my needs. She was willing to allow me to come to her during her office hours if I needed help with something. Yes, a lot of her stuff is on her syllabus and there was a lot of reading. But I did better with her than I did with another professor that I had during the summer at riverside.
Excellent professor. Very clear and concise. Little tolerance for those who clearly don't want to be there. Can't blame her and frankly found it refreshing. Come to class, participate, read the stories and write the papers following directions outlined in syllabus and handouts and you will get an A!
Took this class online for the 8 wk option and it was super easy. 4 papers to get an A and you can revise each of them after she grades them. As a teacher she wasn't very helpful and I felt she would regrade with little feedback. It was an easy A for someone not intersted in truly learning English which as a math major I am not
I took Ms. Garcia's online distance learning 12 week course but withdrew after the 3rd week. Ms. Garcia was unclear about what she wanted with each essay she assigned-she always directed me to the textbook and to the handout she posted, but they were completely contradictory! If you like guessing what a teacher wants and getting zeroes, take her.
She left 3 weeks into the semester for personal reasons, but the time I had with her was good. As long as you went to class and did the assignments correctly, there was no problem. She didn't really emphasize the criteria for the dept. exam (which you NEED to pass to pass the class) and she wasn't going to hold your hand with the in class writings.
I took this class online during the fall semester and by the grace of God passed. ALL of the due dates in the syllabus were wrong. I would receive an email on Wednesday stating an assignment was due that Friday, instead of Monday which was stated in the syllabus. I revised a research paper 6 times before she realized she was grading it wrong!!!
ended up dropping the class towards the end of the semester because it almost seemed impossible to get an A or B in the class and I wasn't going to settle for a C. she was not very helpful when students tried to get help and it was very frustrating. didn't feel as if she was there to teach, she was clear on what was expected though.
I took the 9 week course. An essay every week and allows us to rewrite if not up to par. She's not very clear with what she want the first time around.
There were 30 in my class, and 6 at the end, including me. That says a lot. Shes not horrible, but is very strict and grades tough. Isnt very helpful and kind of scary to talk to. Must jump over hurdles to even get a C. You have to write exactly what she wants to be accepted. Dont recommend unless you want to be pressured to write difficult papers.
I took the 9 weeks class. We had a paper every week due on Friday at 7. In the online class you redo the paper till it's where she wants it. Until then you can't turn in the next paper. She feedback and original directions are unclear so email for clarification, but she usually wont be nice about it.
what are people talking about? Prof Garcia is a great teacher, I loved her! She is clear and concise. Her lectures are awesome and fun. Pay attention to her classes, read the short stories youll write good papers if you do that. The C test is easy and its up to you to write the B and A paper. I would take prof Garcia one more time!
I took both her 1301 and 1302 class and professor Garcia is one of the best! Her lectures are always straight to the point and helpful with upcoming papers. She's also available during office hours and will help you to the best of her ability as long as you put in effort to do well in class.
She's at UT now, not ACC and she is great! I took her for a Shakespeare class and I have never liked his plays so I was pleasantly surprised. She keeps class interesting and I understood the plays like never before. She had us get up and act some out, class discussions were engaging. Not sure what she was like before but she is great at UT...
Garcia has been my favorite teacher at ACC, you have to do the work but she wants you to succeed so if you work, she does too! Participate in Discussion, do your reading, and strive for above average on your papers and you will pass with flying colors.
Course is ACCEPTED/EDIT/REWRITE/REVISE. Do the minimum (7 total essays) to receive a C, 8 essays for a B, and 9 for an A. She typically takes a day to grade/respond to emails. She gives clear grading criteria with her response email. Stay on top of due dates! She'll work with you if you fall behind but it's a lot of work catching up.
I took Prof. Garcia for an online Comp I section this spring. Everything was really well organized, and she responded quickly and clearly to my questions. I plan to take her for other online courses in the future and have recommended her to my friends. I've taken online courses with other professors that were much harder and more confusing. Great!
Off the bat, this professor was very clear of what she expected out of your work and what your work needed to consist of. The textbook that was used was very diverse and involved a lot of real world topics. This class involves a lot of writing but allows you to see different points of views. Gives great feedback and informs if improvement is needed
Great professor. This isn't a blow-off class, but if you want to actually improve your writing skills, I recommend taking Professor Garcia. She is very to-the-point with what she expects. Just show up, do the work, listen to her feedback, and you should do fine. For an A, expect to invest a reasonable amount of time and effort into the class.
Professor Garcia is not a good English teacher. The only thing she is good at is helping you copy papers she writes herself. If you don't do it exactly like her she will return your paper so beware of that. I had to redo only my works cited page several times just because it wasn't exactly like hers. I absolutely hated this professor.
Worst teacher ever. Here directions are extremely unclear, which causes you to have to redo the paper multiple times. She also refers to the sample paper a lot, but if you the sample paper is completely different from the assignment!
BAD TEACHER IS ALL I CAN SAY....
Terrible teacher. She's a nice person but does not know how to actually teach her class. She relies on sample papers to teach her class instead. I wouldn't recommend her unless your extremely good at writing essays.
One of the worst Professors i ever had, and a major attitude problem.
Terrible teacher. Lectures are repetitive and unhelpful. Textbook is an anthology so take a pic of the ToC from someone w/ the book. Never explained how to write the essay as a whole. Really rude to me bc I turned in the last 2 papers late and wouldn't grade them, even tho she said it took 5 min, so I cant take the departmental exam. Worst teacher.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE. Definitely does not teach you ANYTHING and provides no help when you ask for it. She has a major attitude problem and makes you feel stupid. She will return your paper multiple times, and not help you learn how to correct it to how she likes. She is also very bad at responding and will forget if she does or not.
Took Prof. Garcia's 5 week ENGL 1302 class, we had to turn in essays every 3 days.. The instructions were clearly communicated and she workshopped an entire paper for you during class time over each book. If you attend class, the paper is basically written for you by the time the paper is due enjoyed the class Departmental Exam sucked not her fault
Didn't remember grading my paper and then talked down to me when I told her she already gave me the graded paper back, then accused me of plagiarism.
She told us that talking about mistakes grading our papers (that she had made) after the test was academic dishonesty. She gave us long lectures about classism but had no issue yelling at the poor IT person when he couldn't fix her computer for class. She grades on your ability to spew her language, not your academic ability.
While her class was challenging and a lot of work, Professor Garcia was an overall great professor. If you attended class, she went over EVERYTHING expected from EACH paper, so they basically wrote themselves. She was a tough grader, but provided opportunities for students to submit drafts to get feedback before the due date.
If you can, avoid this professor. Hard grader, doesn't help, lots of work. You start off with a "C" in the class after the departmental exam, then you are then able to complete more assignments for a "B", but guess what? She determines whether or not you are "eligible." You only get 2 tries for a "B" with a research paper on a movie.
I took her online 1302 class and she's on the top of my 'I would never want them as a professor ever again' list. Tough grader but that's no problem. It's her response time grading papers and to emails and her tone in those emails. Took her a week to reply to an email and when she did it felt like I was bothering her. Not a good online Professor
Started off a nice professor, but start the class with a C after the departmental exam and thats definitely not fun. Emails are extremely passive aggressive and her tone of voice when asking questions isnt great unless youre her class pet. thought Id give her a chance after reading these reviews but if you can AVOID definitely doNT TAKE HER.
Professor Garcia is a very dynamic professor, and gives straight to the point lectures covering every aspect of the assignments. Come prepared with questions, or find yourself frustrated as she doesnt tolerate repeating herself. Doesnt accept passive language on essays. Takes a lot of time to get back to students if paper is not accepted.
Professor Garcia has a lot of energy & really puts it into her lectures. She really wants everyone to succeed & gives great feedback in class & out of class. If you dont understand something, make sure you ask otherwise she wont think anythings wrong. She has a great sense of humor & grades everything fairly. I really enjoyed learning from her.
Unless you're a wiz at writing papers, I wouldn't suggest taking this course with this professor. Really difficult grader, and honestly just pretty rude altogether. I wish I would have read these reviews before registering. I came out with a B. Had I chosen any other professor I would've most likely made an A. All of these bad reviews are correct.
She's direct and blunt; she's not there to be your friend but your professor and has no problem letting you know it. HOWEVER, she very informative and helpful. I learned a lot and enjoyed her class lectures. Use the tutors in the learning lab. For every paper. More than once if you can. It will make a difference.
There are many bad reviews about Professor Garcia. More often, bad reviews are from students that do not understand the basic concepts of writing and feel every paper is a chance to insert their opinion or write a narrative of their life. I feared English Comp 1 for years, but truly I have felt she has given me the tools to be successful.
The first 6 papers earn you a proctored test. If passed, this only gives you a C for the class. There are 2 more papers after this that allow you a chance for a B and A, Good luck! She gives no feed back or grade on your papers. Emails are short, rude and unprofessional. Don't ask questions if you want to pass the class and stay off her radar.
Professor Garcia is a no nonsense person. You are here to work, not surf on your phone. Is very firm on expectations of papers. Reading your assignments before class is mandatory. I enjoyed her class , would highly recommend her. Do your work, you'll be fine.
Professor Garcia should be your Professor of choice if you want to really learn in the English Department. She has an amazing depth of wisdom on short stories, encourages student participation, and will respect your point of view. She grades papers quickly and gives detailed feedback if the paper needs revision.
Professor Garcia is really helpful if you are interested in learning. Read the syllabus, follow instructions, and don't WHINE. Easy A.
the assignments are easy and you get to revise as many time as you need. alot of sample papers to show you exactly what to do and she is helpful in calss and in the office hours. i struggled with english and still do good in her class. easy a
Professor Garcia is really organized and clear on expectations for each assignment. I agree that she's no nonsense and found her instructions easy to follow. I learned a lot about writing and easily earned an A. Good professor.
If you want an easy A and a somewhat fun class take this professor. The papers simple and you get to review a movie you choose.
Took Garcia's 5 week class, we had to turn in essays every 3 days.. The instructions were clearly communicated and she workshopped an entire paper for you during class time over each book. If you attend class, the paper is basically written for you by the time the paper is due enjoyed the class Departmental Exam sucked not her fault
She can be a bit intimidating at first buted not after you get to the second or third class. Very helpful with instructions and expectations and with lectures. Answers questions and email within a day. Easy A. Learned a lot about short stories
Got responses and grades witihin hours most of the time. Easy to follow instructions but the department exam sucks though it's not her fault.
took prof garcia in the summer to pick up a class while i'm home with my parents . her class was more challenging than i'd expected since it's acc and a summer class but it was interesting, to my surprise, and i learned a lot about short stories--who knew there was realism! lol
Easy A if you go to class and take notes-- easy too if you don't and can write in
Got a lot of help during class and office hours and that made writing the papers easy.
she was very clear in the instructions and has sample papers to use for your papers but i wanted to write more about topics i care about
Talks to students as if theyre dumb
Ask a question, get a response straight from the syllabus or its unclear. Other students had the same problem, they would send emails to other students for aid instead.
Very helpful, helped with papers, do work and will pass. Always available and will answer emails in timely manner. Very fair.
don't take her. she didn't let even let me take the final.
I wish I could go back and take this course in class with a different professor. Her assignments are not clear and it was nearly impossible for me to get feed back from her. She will reject submissions and leave utterly no feedback.
Save yourself honestly
Professor Garcia is great ! As long as you show up, take notes, start the assignment and not procrastinate than you are good! She allows you to rewrite papers if they arent accepted and will help you one on one if needed but as long as you pay attention , you cant fail! She is serious about work so ask questions and talk in discussions, it helps!
Unprofessional and disrespectful. Take this class will another professor. She sends your emails and assignment submissions to her trash can even if they follow the guidelines in her less-than-perfect syllabus.
Easiest English class I've taken. Clear instructions, quick and useful feedback. I liked sending prayers via email from my phone. It was easy
I got alot of help from the sample papers and the handouts in Blackboard and the tutor she suggested. Her responses to my emailed papers were kinda long but helpful and I liked the textbook templates and used them in my history class.
She was really quick to answer email and gives lot of opportunity to make extra points. Hard class but chance to redo an essay to improve your grades which in my case was REALLY helpful. She really wants all the students to pass her class with a good grade. Would definitely take her again if needed.
I was struggling with MLA and sending my papers to her in an online course so she converted my paper from the file I sent and fixed the errores so i could see what I was doing wrong. Im grateful that she did this so I can be successful
She gives terrible feed back, rejects essays, and her sample essays are very lacking. Assignment instructions are very unclear, and the syllabus is horribly written. Wouldnt recommend her courses, or ever take her courses again. Complete waste of time and effort.
I started this class barely able to write a college level essay. Go to her class, take notes, go to essay workshop days, and you will leave her class with an A and a skill to help you for the rest of school. 10/10 recommend
Professor Garcia is very unprofessional and lacks the skills to even teach at a college institution. She takes longer than any other professor to respond to emails, doesnt answer questions, and gives irrelevant feedback. When you do ask her a question, she refers you to her class syllabus that is out dated and from multiple semesters ago.
DONT take this class you probably wont get an A! Professor is rude, unhelpful and shames you for asking for help. Shell tell you your essay is bad without providing any feedback to help you grow as a writer. Also Makes her own rules doesnt follow syllabus. Save yourselves the bother and find a professor who is professional and actually cares!
read the assigned chapters! come to class EXTRA prepared! participate!! and give 101%. she WILL kick you out if you dont do assigned readings or even on your phone. she is very specific on how to contact her and is very strict/blunt/harsh. i dropped due to covid19 and she provided no lectures/aid and simply gave us papers. so- good luck...
She was HORRIBLE! She wasn't clear on feedback if she even gave any to you. Thinks that her class is the ONLY class students are taking that semester with the amount of work given, you don't have time to do any other classes. I would recommend avoiding her class.
Professor Garcia is very knowledgeable about what she is teaching. She was in the army I think or the navy, anyways she kind of is intimidating, but is very respectful. She treats you like an ADULT, so if you haven't read the material for class or done your at home assignments, then don't bother coming.
She was helpful in some ways. You have to take a departmental exam half way through the semester and on each essay you write you can only earn up to a C. Syllabus was very confusing and the only way you can earn a B or an A is if you get your subject approved extremely ahead of time and pass the departmental exam.
So, I started my semester disliking Professor Garcia. As time went on and I understood more of what she wanted, and I ended up loving her and the course. She is tough, but she has so much insight and she wants you to excel at the class. I hadnt taken an English course in 11 years and Im so thankful it started with her!
Professor Garcia is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. She is fair, but no nonsense. While in her class she graded papers with a keen eye and helped to sharpen the classes tools for writing and analyzing. Don't come in acting a fool, be respectful, DO YOUR HOMEWORK/READING and make sure to bring the book to class. Be attentive and listen and try your best.
Don't take this class. Don't ask her a question, she's rude & refers you to her outdated syllabus. Every assignment is the same. The class isn't enjoyable. You write how she wants you to write or you have to rewrite the essay. Harsh and blunt for no reason. Obsessed with the formality of the emails you send her. Work hard and you'll earn a C or C+
She's very rude and unhelpful. Doesn't really give feedback. If you know how to write papers, just put your head down and follow exactly what she wants in her sample essay. She wants very specific sentences in each paragraph. You likely won't learn anything from her and will find the class incredibly frustrating if you're actually trying to grow.
I took Garcia's Comp 2 in the Spring of 2018. At the time, she was tough to understand during lectures, and out of frustration, I ended up taking a B and not even trying for the A paper. I am now a senior at UT, and not one professor since taking Garcia's class has asked me to write in her style. I learned nothing but to copy her writing. Huge ego.
Worst professor I have ever had. Way too strict for a required class, its like she expects all of her students to write like English majors. She kept rejecting papers that I worked really hard on to the point where I had to drop the class. I am now a senior at UT and have been told by multiple professors that I am a great writer, she's too picky.
Not good.
Professor Garcia can be quite strict, but if you engage with her system, you can still do well. Definitely use resources like the textbook and unstuck AI to supplement the class - they really helped me prep for essays.
