Dr. Gibbs is an awesome, inspiring teacher with a great sense of humor. I highly reccomend that everyone take atleast one class from her.
Great professor. Really interesting choice of articles and homework. Gives good feedback and is great at listening to students and not just talking at them!
Gibbs has a lot of energy and makes class fun. She is a great teacher and a cool lady. if you try hard you will do well.
Very professional and motivated.
Dr. Gibbs is a wonderful teacher!!!! I learned a lot from her lecture. She cares students, and she is supportive professor. Her grading is clear. Just remember to put page numbers when you turn in your paper. She is the best professor at Foothill!!!!
Great teacher! Feels like in high school again. She treats everyone like her kids. Clear, easy instructions and reasonable requirements to get an esay A. You'll feel the TLC!
No midterm, No final but just 2 presentations and some online quiz
Take this class online -- you can do things on your own time. It's a lot of work, but very flexible. This is one of my favorite classes Ive ever taken! I am recomendding it to my little sister next year! Thanks Dr Gibbs
One of the best teachers at Foothill. Will make you love Canadians, whether you like it or not.
Dr. Gibbs is awesome. I took two classes with her. She made it really interesting. She's the funniest and coolest. I recommend her for any sociology class.
We <3 Dr. Gibbs!
Dr. Gibbs was pretty clear about her instructions and expectations for the on-line course I took. She could have been more involved in on-line discussions. Her exams were challenging, but if you study hard it should be easy to pass with an A or B.
She was the teacher that made me decide to switch to a sociology major. She was so helpful and made the class very interesting. I had her as a teacher 4 times at Foothill. She is amazing and she knows what she is talking about!
dr. gibbs is simply 'fascinating'! i looked forward to coming to class every day. the student presentations kept the reading assignments interesting, and class discussions really make you think. TAKE HER CLASS!!! shes awesome and will make you love sociology
Dr. Gibbs is such a cool professor! I've only taken one class with her. From taking that class I am sure ANY class with her would be fun and inetresting.
Dr. Gibbs is a great teacher. She has a great sense of humor. She mmakes the subject easy to learn, and is very clear about what work you need to do to get an A. But I'm not so fond of her attendance policy: you lose 3 points for every absence OR tardy. (up to 20 points)
EXCELLENT teacher! Her assignments are very helpful to understanding the class, she's there if you need help, and is funny too! If you do the assignments and ask her for help/advice, good grade guarenteed!
If the exams were on Dr. Gibbs' personal life than i would definitely get an A! Too bad the tests are on the actual material in the book. If you want to sit and listen to a 40 year old married woman's life story for 50 minutes a day sign up now!
I agree with the last response. She tells WAY too many life stories and doesn't really listen to the students.I do not look forward to her class in any way what so ever.I like though that she read the last response and threw a hissy fit about it. Touchy I guess.
I absolutely disagree with the last comments. Dr. Gibbs is a FASCINATING ptrofessor. Her classes are well-taught and highly informative. She gets her sudents excited about sociology and encourages them to learn more on their own. She is my absolute favorite Foothill professor.
omg how ridiculous is it to require participation for an online class? i got an a on every assignment and test in the class but i ended up with a B because of my "lack of participation." IT'S AN ONLINE CLASS. freakin ridiculous
Great teacher, very smart and she knows what she is talking about. I actually thought of switching my major to sociology because of her. Take her face-to-face class, it's a lot of fun
Going to class seems almost piontless. I barely learn anything in class and everything that we do have to learn we have to do it ourselves from the book. Dr. Gibbs is a funny teacher but class sessions arent that interesting. If you're good at reading alot from a text book then take this class.
Damn class. Heavy work load. Lots of difficult readings. Requires lots of participation. Regret to take this class.
The class was really easy and it was basically reading a chapter then commenting on it in the forums. Responding to other's posts sometimes helps you figure out what to put. Midterm and Final easy. Definately recommend. She is nice.
the class itself (online) was easy. Gibbs was rude to me at times on the forums when I tried to question her lectures. A little too feminist for me. Still, the work is pretty easy and it is fun to interact/debate with other students on the forums
I think Dr. Gibbs is an excellent teacher. Her requirements are reasonable, such presentations. She is easy and interesting. I decided to get an AA in Sociology because of her classes I took and I plan on taking more. :)
She's apathetic to students. I took her class online and lots of participation was required. Also, difficult readings and hard final.
The class was very interesting it addresses many current issues. Overall, her class is easy because she doesn't assign much homework. There are only 2 required assignments, 2 extra credit, participation (3 post a week) and 2 test. Her final was very difficult despite studying a lot AHHHH!!! Although, it's real easy to get a "B" hard to get an "A."
Great class, great teacher.
She was an amazing teacher. She is what lead me to become a sociology major!!
An ok class with a very liberal perspective. I enjoyed the readings but the capitalism bashing got old even for a berkeley liberal like me.
This class is a good introduction to sociology. The book is very thorough. A chapter is assigned, some discussion and an extra reading from a class reader. Tests are not hard, subject is interesting. Teacher is solidly good and covers the material completely. This is a great Liberal Arts class - it has lots of insight into how the world works.
An ok class but don't argue with her on her views your grade will suffer. Just agree with her and you will pass with a minimum B. She talks like she knows hawaiian history and when I opposed her view having been raised in hawaii since I was a year old my grade suffered.
This is a good introduction of the subject. Read the book very carefully, even outline the chapters to get an A. Keep up on the reader as she will give a couple of pop quizes. If she has an option for paper or presentatio, present your reading for higher scores. She is respectful of students, knows her stuff and is very professional.Recommmended
she rocks
Great teacher. A pleasure to be around, extremely well organized and consistantly good humored. She makes the class so enjoyable that you feel awful if you have to miss it! Varied ciriculum includes, lectures, movies, discussions and presentations. The 12 weeks flew by!
Great teacher! I havent had so much fun learning in a long time. All of her assignments are awesome, and you learn so much. She's funny, especially in her 10am class, and she gets people excited about the subject. Highly recommend her, four thumbs up.
honor class ends in the middle of quarter, but the only paper graded and returned at the end of quarter. Students do not know what they get and if they should drop before withdraw day. Assignment requirement is not clear at all. Class material is not so related to what she expected in paper. Not Recommand her for honor seminer.
She's great! I had her for the 8 am section and she was so much fun to learn from. She's really enthusiastic, punchy (in a good way...), knowledgable, and helpful. 100% reccomend her; you'll learn a ton and enjoy the process. Lots of reading, but the discussions make it interesting and worthwhile.
In the two years I have been at Foothill, Professor Gibbs has been the best instructor I've had. She clearly enjoys being a sociologist and she is clear and helpful with the materials she teaches.
EXTREME reading in this class. little homework but you HAVE GOT to keep up with the reading, and there's A LOT of it. the midterms are key word and theory based. you would think that learning more about the statistics and the issues would be valuable, not the keyterms. She's a nice teacher overall, but the class is hard.
I took this class on-line. There is A LOT of reading. Particpation is mandatory, she tracks your log on time, plus you have to post several times each week. Don't get behind in the reading. There's one paper, 2 exams, and extra credit available. Dr. Gibbs is very involved in her classes & passionate about her subject. Great teacher who I recommend.
I took her online class, and she seemed great to me. You MUST post in the forums each and every week. I found the mid-term anf final to be somewhat difficult, but her lectures are clear and she is very clear about what she expects out of you in the class.
Dr. Gibbs class was a good one. The book was great reading and subject was contemporary. If you take her class, make sure you read through all instructions. She had a dated seminar paper, and some didn't respond in time and lost thier points because it was too late. Lots of reading- only two tests, few assignments, forums, extra credit too.
as long as you fulfill the required readings and logins you should do fine.
Online Class. It is a great class. She is a wonderful teacher and very passionate about Sociology. Makes you think about things differently. Class is organized well and expectations to do well are very clear. However, there is a ton of reading and you must log on to the class site regularly. More participation reqired than most online courses.
I took her online class. She is nice, helpful, and grading is fair. She gives her instructions clearly. So, you will be fine if your follow her rules, and remember the assignment deadline. Yet, I have to say that her mid-term and final are not easy.. You NEED to study hard and read many readings for preparing the exam.
Great speaker, clear, fair, open minded, approachable, down to earth, and can't emphasize enough...she's Canadian. She is the definition of a college professor. Expect to work at college level, slackers will suffer the grade and most important miss out on the learning. She has a wealth of info. It's worth going to each class and actually learning.
she's ok, but you can't disagree with her at all or your particpation will go down. she just HAS to be right
No text book, so you NEED TO BE IN CLASS TO PASS! It is all lecture based & articles, requires you to think for assingments, but I found them enjoyable and easy if you attend class regularly. My only complaint she talks fast and my heart rate went up when taking notes so beware if you struggle with notetaking/remembering and instructions are vague
I have taken her in-class section. The lectures were very boring and I have learned nothing from her. Her jokes were really "funny". It seemed to be an easy class because the final exam was online. However, the mid-term was so harsh as you need to prepare half of the syllabus. If you want to learn something from Soci, not the best choice.
Very interesting class. It was great because you can relate everything to real life. I took the online class and it is so easy, you have a choice of assignment. There are only 2 tests: midterm and final, both very easy. You just have to read a lot and write and one page essay with small assignments. Rrecommended.
Gibbs is the one who inspired me to get a psych/soc major. Had little interest in it before this class. Fabulous teacher! Very energetic & always teaches interesting subjects. Don't take any other teacher for Soc1. May not be the easiest but you learn interesting things that can be applied to every day life! Excellent class!
I took Gibb's class on-line and what a fantastic teacher! She post questions that make you really think. I HATE Sociology but Gibbs made it enjoyable with her thought provoking questions and on-line "lectures". If you have to take a Soc class..take hers!
The BEST teacher ever!! She made Sociology interesting and fun! I used to love going to her class because it was never boring! She has a great sense of humor and is ALWAYS willing to help! One of the textbooks(Real World) was so interesting, usually I hate reading text books but this one was great!! I'm definitly going to take class from her again!
Dr. Gibbs. What an amazing professor!! She is so passionate about what she does and her excitement is contagious. Attendance is pretty vital, you can't miss too many classes or your grade will drop. I learned a great deal and was a part of some good discussions in class. Overall a great teacher, I highly recommend taking her course.
This was the easiest class I've ever taken! I didn't learn anything in this class. All we did was criticize and complain about society, life, the world, etc. Most of the time, it felt like I was in some sort of support group. It was the easiest A I've ever gotten. A complete waste of my time.
Ridiculous amount of work required for an online class! Lots of reading, 2 logins and comment posted per week, 3 hrs worth of participating in a research study, 3-4 assingments, 3 tests (somewhat confusing) Hated this class!
Have taken several classes w/her, online & in-person. Lots of reading & homework, & participation is required to pass, but classes are interesting & assignments/tests are easy if you've kept up w/everything. She's extremely helpful, involved, & passionate about the subjects - love her!!
Easy class! Class is worth 220 points: 50 pnt on each midterm (theres 2), 50 pnts on a Stanford study (easy). 40 pnts on a debate presentation, & 10 pnts on a final 2 paragraph paper, & 20 pnts on participation. 200 pnts gets u an A +
Friendly and helpful instructor. Interesting class, always something new and thought-provoking.
First day might seem very overwhelming and she makes it sound so tough but it really isn't. Class grade is based on midterm, a presentation on an article, rep, weekly friday quizes (which is the final so technically there's really not a finally), and weekly online posting. Her class is a total bore but attendance is mandatory.
Dr. Gibbs really knows her stuff. She is enthusiastic about sociology and really strives to help her students understand it as well. Class is mandatory and there is a lot of stuff that you need to do in order to complete the course: participate in research experiments, weekly discussion posts, seminar presentation, weekly quizzes, and a midterm.
EXTREMELY EASY grader. Weekly online quizzes are T/F questions. The midterm was really easy. Even if you didn't read the textbook, you wouldn't fail the test. Just go to class and take notes. Not a demanding course, easy to get full credit on the project.
I have taken 2 online courses with Dr. Gibbs. She is amazing. She really cares about how her students interpret sociology and is very communicative in the forums. She answers your questions clearly and is helpful. Lots of reading and forum writing but all in all very easy.
TAKE HER!! she's awesome and very passionate about what she teaches. The class is really easy, with weekly online quizes that are open book (only 5 questions) and weekly discussion posts. The stanford rep project is easy and her class is easy. just show up to class, take notes, listen, and you will do fine!
Took the online course. Pretty Easy, just need to read the material and from the book.
Very good teacher. Makes the class fun! Pretty easy class!
i took the class online and it was very fun and easy as long as you did the readings. Also the textbook has a website associated with it and thats a great resource as well. the only thing that was difficult was that the extra credit options were not that clear, and it was weird to have discussions in a forum situation. but other than that fun quick
Even though I got an A, I would not recommend this class. Very dull, despite supposedly being about pop culture. Her multiple lectures/modules are overly long. Copy/paste lectures in Microsoft Word and use control F to find answers for midterm and final. Half the students dropped after a month. Take FA 1 instead.
She is awesome and you can see that she is very passionate about teaching sociology. Class is not difficult, as long as you follow her instruction, you will get an A for sure!
she really loves sociology and you can tell, but her ability to give notes that are easy to draw information from lacks. she should get a text book some of her stuff needs to be looked up and google just doesn't cut it. very good looking though
This was my first online class at Foothill. I found the teacher really engrossed in the topic. I was not excited about taking this class, but she taught it in a way that I found interesting. If you do the work, it's an easy class.
She is a really really good professor! She always manages to make the class interesting. Class is not difficult at all. You will surely get an A if you do all the work. I recommend you to take her lecture because she is just so cool in person!
Stay away from online class. Sylabus is 38 pages long! Each week there are 18 discussions. Mandatory module opening or you get dropped. Modules p/ week= 15. I have taken over 15 online classes, this one is insane! One midterm and One final. Nothing else besides discussions. Disucussion dnt count but you must read to pass midterm/final. Stay away
great teacher! you definitely want to keep up on the reading/modules/discussions. there aren't any quizzes so you don't really know how great your understanding is until the midterm/final. 2 required discussion posts each week. the project is SUPER easy. i finished it in the 3 weeks. great teacher. lots of thought-provoking discussions.
Take in-person if you can. Readings are easy, so do them - participation is the best way to build a good rapport w/ Dr. G. She is passionate and understanding. A lot of work can be done in advance: REP, presentation, xtra credit paper, and she is very specific on the syllabus about her criteria. Class is enjoyable if you're open to it.
I thought this class topics were interesting but I would've taught it differently. I felt like the coarse was too much of a skeletal overview of everything. Dr. Gibbs puts her lectures online so that helps when it comes to midterms but it's a lot. She's loud and can be kind of opinionated sometimes.
I felt that she was a good instructor and very clear on her guidelines. You are graded on attendance, so don't be late for class. As for the midterm/final, I recommend you to take notes in lectures and study from them rather textbook. Some of the questions will be based on video/examples she discuses in class.
Beware stay away from ONLINE class. Reading and forum participation intensive. GRAMMAR counts..she will deduct points for minor errors. I am currently getting a B+ in that class, but if I retake I would take in class or different professor. Hope this helps. Goodluck.
Do not take online class the workload is heavy. A lot of reading. She is very hard on grading. 1 midterm= 25% grade and 1 final= 25% grade. The questions are insanely hard. Study guide and textbook only help a bit. Plan reading a lot n be active in forum to be updated.
I found her class very interesting. She always tries to lighten the mood with some funny jokes. The workload is very doable. All work was online and in class were lectures. She refers and uses textbooks every single class, so be sure to use it. The way she structures her class is different, but doable and fun!
She is really interesting, and she is always exited to teach! I highly recommend you take her hybrid class.
Online class was a lot to take in! 30+ page syllabus and so much reading. Good teacher I must say but hard grader! Wouldn't mind taking a face to face class but not online.
great teacher! really helpful outside of class too; emailed her at midnight, got my reply at 7AM. Genuinely loves Sociology and wants to teach the students what she knows. Class material is often applicable to reality too. Definately recommend her SOC 40!
Prof. Gibbs is great. Class was pretty easy (I got an A) - there is a weekly test online and a response to a question she posts - which is your opinion so there is no wrong answer. Optional paper for extra credit/midterm/final. She is NOT a hard grader - good for a "new to college" type of student - so take her your 1st or 2nd Qrtr.
Professor Gibbs is such am amazing professor that really cares about her students! I loved listening to all her lectures and hearing her jokes. She is so entertaining and so passionate about sociology. I took soc 1 and fell in live with the subject, although depressing at times!
A hard online class, would recommend taking it in class. A ton of reading material with the lectures, text, reader, plus a crazy amount of information she puts on the discussion pages. Not very clear through out the class on what she's looking for. Midterm and final are hard. Participation and REP is easy.
Professor Gibbs is terrific. First of all her ratings should be 5's across the board. I don't know what some "raters" are thinking by calling her class hard or her a tough grader. She is not - and she is extremely nice. Take Soc 1 and it will be very easy to get an A - good for your GPA and you'll love her and the class as well! She is awesome
Professor Gibbs is AMAZING! I missed two weeks of school and I still got an A in the class. Just stay on top of the readings and online posts/quizzes. She's very understanding and helps if you tell her what's going on. Class was entertaining too!
Worst class ever taken with 3 degrees and A+ average. 30 page syllabus a complete mess. Material isn't hard, but meeting her demands was impossible. I turned in everything early and was dropped before the end of week 2 for logging in after 9am Friday. Prof Gibbs was unresponsive/I'm out $500 in books and fees. Maybe in class is better than online?
Her syllabus was unnecessarily complicated, and her ability to offer help with assignments/questions of such was beyond poor. I do not recommend her at all for any online class. She is more focused upon her own agenda as opposed to caring for her students' understanding of the course concepts and material.
I didn't like her long syllabus, however I enjoyed her online class anyway. She makes the discussions very interesting by the current issues towards sociology. Whether you take her online or on campus, just do the work and you will be fine. This is college. Professor Gibbs teaches a variety of classes, it's not like she only teaches online.
I took Dr. Gibbs online classes for SOC 1 and 8, and I highly recommend taking SOC 8 online over taking SOC 1 online because it's an easier class. No Sociology background required! If you need SOC 8 for GE, take it online, otherwise, I recommend taking SOC 1 on campus. I personally like her SOC 8 online class because there's very little work. :)
She's a very hard grader. Her syllabus is extremely lengthy. Avoid taking her online class if you could. Otherwise, she's fine.
She is very good and easy. No final for her class.
Very hard grader and hard to please. I realize it's college but she takes her self way too seriously. It's doable but try to find a different professor for Sociology.
Very confusing. Harsh course. Unclear. Did not make use of online learning program's widgets or functions, instead everything was crammed dis-organizedly into a HUGE syllabus. Small time limit on quiz/tests and unforgiving to issues dealing with technical/hardware failure
Syllabus is insane. You better read it very thoroughly, and maybe several times. There are tons of little assignments that I just don't understand. Why do you have to make a chart of your online activity? Why are comments only limited to 9 sentences or less? Other than that, I did enjoy the course. Especially the "reader" text.
Love Dr. Gibbs! The only homework she gives are these easy, weekly online tests (open book); time limit is an hour but shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes. She's really laid back and definitely kept me awake so early in the morning. You can tell she really loves sociology and loves teaching it even more. Would take her again!
You must attend every class or you get no points even if you show up a minute late. She grades very hard. You have to do a lot of reading. Not much help when you ask questions. Nice professor but hard class.
Love this class!!! It's not an easy class though. However, just make sure you do all the work and readings, you'll get a fancy grade.
1 Quiz and forum post a week. thats the routine. Pop quizzes are extra credit so make sure to do them. 1 midterm and no final but the final is replaced with Stanford REP which is a waste of time tbh. If youre looking for an A make sure to read but if youre looking to just pass this class just show up and do minimal work.
This is an unhelpful class. She is so strict on everything and if you are not sociology major just don't take her class, or you will end up getting bad grades. I took this as a general education class but this affect my GPA so much which I would not recommend her class to other people.
Interesting class. There is a lot of material to learn over the quarter. Her syllabus is very confusing and lengthy. Make sure to read it thoroughly because she doesn't except late homework.
Syllabus seems crazy but is literally an easy checklist to follow, do the REP right away (easy points), give 3 extra credits (quizpaper) so do them! 1 Midterm to study, just study the guides and your good, easy open book quizzes instead of a final! and a post per week. (easy money). The presentation she goes through completely so take time on it.
Gibbs is so inspirational, in my opinion. We talked about some really interesting topics in class and she is truly passionate about what she teaches. She has a lot of experience and she is so helpful. Super approachable if you need to talk to her. She is somewhat a tough grader, because she's very specific in what she wants.
Dr. Gibbs is seriously amazing. I would take this class again. Super easy! Save yourself trouble & don't buy or rent the textbook. You can look up excerpts that she assigns to read or she will post pdf's. I got through quizzes using quizlet. Definitely recommend this class!
Had some very interesting lectures. The expected online work is very easy. Attendance matters and there is no in class final. Fairly easy course
Dr. Gibbs is awesome. Just do the readings she assigns (it's honestly not that much) and she will love you and the class will be a breeze. Her tests are pretty easy, just review her lectures and take notes when she talks about the articles because that will help you on the final and midterm.
Professor Gibbs is a GREAT HELPFUL instructor. She truly cares about her students and their well being. Yes she expects you to show up to class, but honestly why wouldn't you expect that from yourself already? She gives a fair amount of work but always gives you plenty of time to do it. Deadlines are strict but amount of work given is fair.
Gibbs is such an exuberant character! She brings such a fun energy to class and is clearly passionate about sociology. However, her lectures are definitely discussion-based, so the conversation and the work-load can be pretty unstructured. Overall, it was a very interesting class, and Gibbs is so sweet.
My GPA is 3.95 for 60 credits but I find the class extremely hard not because of the subject but the way of teaching: unclear chaotic lectures, disorganized material. I got headaches after reading them. She is hard on students and forgiving to herself, very opinionated and does not consider a different point of view though states she does.
She's a harsh grader. For discussions, she expects you to write a well written post with sources. You will be criticized by her if you do not list your sources in the correct format or if you have poor grammar. Class is unorganized. Also, she gives an attitude when you email her. I brushed it off, but her attitude and criticism got worse.
Patricia is very nice & always willing to help make sure you understand the material. She is very passionate about the field of sociology and has some interesting lectures. But the class relies VERY heavily on her lectures, so be sure to take lots of notes! It is a sociology class, so my advice is to take it only if you are interested in sociology.
Professor Gibbs does all the talking, she does not stimulate discussion in her classes. She is not open to taking opinions and instead of correcting people on why their points maybe incorrect, she shuts them down. She doesn't even give you constructive feedback on assignments. Interupts while students presentation and then marks them off for time.
Get ready to learn about the sociological imagination and nothing else. Everything she expects you to know is within the books and her lectures consist of her ranting and going off on tangents while talking about the sociological imagination. Shes a nit picky grader and can be condescending towards students who don't speak up much in class.
Really nice professor--responds quickly to questions and cares about the subject. Don't be put off by the amount of reading or how long/unorganized the assignments and syllabus are. Lots of the links and lectures are optional. Know the definition of sociological imagination and use purdue owl to get APA references down, and you will get an A.
I took her class during my first quarter in the foothill college. She is a bit strict about her class. Especially for the extra credit. She is very picky about it. It is hard to earn a good grade in her class. I prefer John Foxx's sociology class better.
This class should be required because you will learn a lot about life, society, class and culture. However, its structure is really confusing in the beginning. You may do an assignment but must go back and click yes you completed it. Standard online formula - read chapter, post twice a week, quiz. There are other assignments too which are fun.
Straight forward. The first few weeks of online class are a bit confusing but as soon as you understand and get the hang of things you can easily get an A. You are required to post 2 discussion but certain dates and tests are on Fridays before 5pm. If you follow all directions and complete assignments before the deadline you are guaranteed an A.
An overall easy class with straightforward direction and easy content, but Stayte is a bit unorganized in Canvas. You only have to participate in 2 discussions a week, but this is a little confusing to understand the first time. Also her rubrics often do not match up, so it's better to do more than less because she'll take off a lot of points
Lectures/readings are unorganized, super text heavy. If you miss even 1 reading quiz, you will miss the discussion post assignment and she will NOT unlock it for you. It's literally just a "yes" or "no" if you contributed to the discussions. You get no credit, even if you did. Deadlines are all over the place too; 5pm, 7pm etc. Don't recommend her.
Deadlines on homework/quizzes are all over the place and massively inconsistent. It would be so much easier if all assignments had the same deadline of Friday at 5p. Extra credit deadlines also ridiculously early in the course. Net tutor is a rip off, unable to even log on. Zero flexibility on deadlines. Go with the other prof. Many regrets...
Very tough grader, and won't negotiate deadlines or accept late work. I was an A+ student and had a good relationship with her, I ended up with a B because of a missed stupid and unclear online study survey. HOWEVER, she is very passionate about her subject, and genuinely cares about her students and having a diversity of activities in the course.
took her soc 20 and sosc 1 class, and the structure is the same. Quizzes and discussion posts every week, be prepared to write 1 or 2 reports. The quizzes and discussion posts are based on textbooks and her lectures. The way she formats her online class is confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy to get an A.
It's ridiculous how much work she assigns every week.
The actual work isnt difficult, but you will have to scour dozens of announcements, messages, and discussion posts to figure out deadlines and other important information because everything is inconsistent and/or unclear. The weirdest online class format Ive ever seen. The readings and discussions are almost unbearably boring.
I just completed, a class called.. Major Social Problems with this professor. It was a good class, the only thing that I really did not like was that her quizzes did not always follow what was in the chapters, and also it is very important to have a good understanding of what the sociological imagination means. Otherwise just do the work and enjoy
While this class was not difficult, I felt her syllabus was a lot to handle and I found myself constantly checking it every week to ensure I didn't miss an assignment due date. Make sure you pay attention to the deadlines because those will come back to bite you if you don't finish them. She doesn't give much feedback except for major assignments.
I enjoyed the class and found the information useful. While I earned an A in the class but be aware of deadlines, there are a lot of them for your discussion posts and quizzes. This can hurt you if you aren't as organized. The quizzes were easy if you did the readings. Feedback is given on major assignments, make sure to start them early.
it is easy to slack off, but really easy to get an A if you understand the format of the course.
She is not helpful at all. Do not take this class. All you learn about is sociological imagination and that is it.
good choice for sociology! Professor Gibbs is super passionate about the subject and really tries to get her students interested in the field of sociology. lots of quizzes and discussions, but gives a really good learning experience and also offers a substantial amount of extra credit! She also gives you really in depth feedback on your work!
Her main focus is the sociological imagination & you truly don't learn anything new. Everything somehow had to be related to the sociological imagination. It's an easy class but her format is super unclear which makes it extremely difficult. When I tried to ask for guidance instead of helping she told me to just look back at her syllabus, no help.
Great teacher has no final exam super easy . Grade consist of discussion writting, Small pop quizzes relate to chapters you read, then a quiz game that test your comprehension on the books reading but you can continue to play to get the highest points to pass the quiz. Lots of reading & writting .
Prof Gibbs is an amazing prof, her lectures are clear. She gives extra credit and you have to do REP research, I would recommend her class.
Dr. Gibbs has her class set up in a strict, easy to follow schedule. As long as you do your work by the deadline and according to the rubric, you'll be fine. She's always there to clarify if needed. Open book quizzes on Friday, discussion posts due Wednesday and Sunday, and occasional papers sprinkled throughout the quarter. Not a difficult class!
Unorganized online and modules very hard to follow. Teacher responds to emails with no clear answers. We mostly used a website called "inquizitive" for majority of our quizzes, which In my opinion was not easy to navigate and overall was a stressful way to take a quiz. Did all the work and tests and still received an F. First F I have ever had
She seems like she means well, but her modules are beyond difficult to follow. She writes novels about nothing, but leaves instructions unclear. Everybody is obviously confused and it's beyond irritating. She seems to be very unorganized and just loves to talk. Easy class, big headache.
I'm in the INTRO to global studies online course, and there is so much busy work with some unclear deadlines. There are also non-Foothill affiliated major projects (like Stanford REP, or MiA) that do nothing for the curriculum and feel like a waste of time. This doesn't feel like an intro level class, not worth all the extra projects/busy work.
tough grader, her feedback is not very helpful. gives extra credit paragraphs, quizzes are open book and you can use your notes, Inquisitive is very helpful in learning the material. Stanford Rep Research. discussions due every 2weeks on Wed&Fri, student interactions are a must. Material is all over the place, really long & overwhelming.
Dr. Gibbs is a great sociologist. Very passionate about social justice and the sociological imagination. It was often difficult to understand the assignments in the modules, felt too packed, but the material was engaging and interesting. I learned a lot from this class. The textbook is also current and relevant. I would take her class again.
This class was taken fully online so it was hard to contact her. My classmates were more helpful than her. She would take a long time to reply to my emails and her responses never made sense. I would end up going to my classmates for help. So much material and long paragraphs but so messy, it was really hard to understand. Overall, class is easy
Great and caring professor, but her assignments were a little too much sometimes. Total of 5 graded discussions which was tough to get full credit, but possible with the feedback. Other important assignments: Stanford Rep, Inquisitive, weekly quizzes on textbooks, and weekly articles. Offered extra credit which helped get an A in the class
Previous comment was removed. So, here is the refined version: Unorganized, inconsistent, and does little to answer your questions through email. If you have a question about an assignment or dates (even though I read the syllabus) she will copy/paste from the syllabus rather than further explaining.
Her Soc 1 class is an easy option if you're looking to knock out ge requirements over the summer. She mostly grades on weekly discussions, which she gives you 100% on as long as you write something decent. She also gives extra credit weekly which boosts your grade A LOT. The weekly quizzes are easy, and she even drops your lowest one.
Lots of reading + easy online quizzes and somewhat hard to navigate weekly discussion posts. Easy A plus extra credit opportunities. Expects us to learn only through the online textbook. Not necessarily bad or great class. As a SOC major, I can't say this class really helped me as much as I hoped. Not much interaction or feedback with the students
Extremely confusing, inconsistent, and unhelpful. She does not care that her students know the material or are trying hard in her class. Instead, she grades her students using her incomprehensible grading system. My bad grade reflects all of her quizzes being RE-graded after the final and after the "class is over." I thought I had an A all quarter.
She is a very tough grader. Her canvas layout was confusing. She has a bunch of tabs everywhere. She has a bunch of videos and random articles that are useless. She is picky about discussion answers. Everything except discussions is auto-graded. You get 100% first but then she goes in and changes it manually to your actual FIRST try score.
Similar experience to other students here: the introductory sociology class was disorganized and her grading standards are unclear. She does not provide clear feedback and many of her responses are copy pasted. Everything is about the sociological imagination. I appreciate her well-meaning intentions but I would not take her course again.
This professor has the worst grading system, she doesn't go off of letter grades or percentages rather its the amount of points you earn that determines your letter grade. she has too many discussion posts which makes navigating the course so difficult. she makes everything 10000x harder/more complicated then it needs to be. don't take this class!!
This professor is not clear about her discussion posts and will grade you toughly! She doesn't even explain why she grades you down on Discussion posts and just copy and pastes the rubric in her submission comments. The quiz software she uses is also frustrating to use and makes taking tests stressful. I would not recommend this professor at all!
horrible grading system, not based on letters its a point system, just over all I wouldnt reccomend her as a teacher for this class, she seemed sweet but wasnt very helpful when needed, which was a lot with her style, and HORRIBLE quizes that take FOREVER to finish, like 3 hrs, to get full credit for like 6 points on them unless u want that, dont
had alot of negative things happen losing a loved one and she wasnt very helpful about it just offering counseling services but maintaining the same workload with no changes to due dates when I asked due to grief where other teachers have been more understanding Confuse disc posts if you did badly, copy/pasted the rubric which I followed to a tee.
BEWARE some of the discussions aren't even graded but are still mandatory to do and doesn't mention it on the assignment directly. You have to be so unbelievably anal when reading over the syllabus, announcements and directions because they will absolutely mess you up if you aren't careful. But even that can't save you from her inconsistency.
You need to buy an online textbook with inquisitive access. Each week: 1 blog quiz on inquisitive, 1 discussion +respond to classmate (she is picky with the discussion posts, but extra credit makes up for the lost point), 1 Inquizitive assignment. There 5 extra credit assignments each worth 5 points. This class is super easy if do all the work.
This class can be a bit tricky with the professor's grading system and unclear feedback. However, using unstuckstudy and staying on top of the discussions can help you navigate the class successfully. The quizzes are challenging but manageable with good preparation.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR SOC. By far worse and unreasonable professor for grading in a class like sociology.
I took the class accelerated and thought the workload was manageable. This class was extremely easy and if you read the instructions her grading criteria is clear. The assignments are easy and there is a ton of extra credit available.
How can you have an authentic community if your students never had an actual conversation with each other? Also, sometimes your smile is fake.
NO! doesn't have clear answers or help at all when you're struggling. Her discussions and assignments rubric are clear and you could follow it all but she will still deduct points, with no explanation. Extra credits are 1-5 points each assignment, you can get 100% on all ch. quizzes but she will only give you a 3.7, find a different professor
Spent money on textbook for no reason, only for it to be used on extra credit assignments worth 1 point and not actual work that give you more. Thanks to this class my gpa plummeted so much, wish I can revert time; would've dropped it.
I was excited to take the class but she is a really tough grader. I did every single assignment and followed the rubric but still fell short with no explanation. extra credit it offered but its kind of pointless. I was hoping to get an A in the class but points were constantly being deducted. And buying the text book wasn't even necessary.
Overall, the assignments were easily graded (besides discussions). The work was a bit demanding considering how much she gave us. She is super picky with her discussion responses. There were some reading, but it wasn't crucial to the grade as much. No test final.
