I had her for sociology, she was funny and nice. plus she made you think. tests were hard, essays, work but she grades easy. i liked her ALOT! definetly my favorite class and i actually went so :)
the tests aren't hard as long as you read the book. she also grades easy on her paper and her class is intersting you will learn something.
Nice professor. The midterm/ final is essay format but she gives you the questions ahead of time and you are allowed to use your notes during the tests. Paper is easy. Overall it is an interesting class... recommend it!
Very interesting processor. Attendance is 10% of grade. Can get dull at times but really good professor and pretty easy.
The paper work is easy but the test are really hard and it's up to you to study for them because the discussions don't have nothing to with the tests. The power point presentation is based on your research paper and your only required 7 min. long.
Class was pretty straightforward...just 2 exams and 2 papers. She can be a little tricky on her exams so make sure to write down everything she says during the exams reviews. Our whole class did bad on the midterm so she curved it and then eased up the final exam. Class is recommended to take for Soc. and non Soc. majors.
yes our entire class practically failed the midterm. I think she could be a little more helpful in preparing her students for tests and papers. Her lectures were boring and expect to stay for the entire class. You must write every word she says in the mini review, in addition to reading the entire book. If you can stay away then do it!
She's a really nice lady, but her lectures can get pretty dull. She is extremely fair in her grading. Exams are tough but she gives you possible essay questions prior, which is a big help.
She is very nice. The 8 page paper was an easy A, but the midterm was not as easy as it seemed. She gave us 14 possible essay questions and chose 7 of them for the midterm. These were graded kind of hard, but then again the paper made up for it. She is really nice if you can sit through longggg lectures. She makes it interesting.
Very poor teacher. When I need help asking questions about a test she is doesn't help at all, just tells me to ask someone else in the class. Her lectures are boring and all she does is talk about her life. All she does in class is pick on the guys and makes fun of them.
If you are not a complete slacker, she's an easy "A"...make sure to study for the tests because that's what determines your grade. She grades very easy on papers. She's very sweet and helpful.
Easy class but boring lectures. Lenient grader; 2 papers, 3 tests for which a study guide is provided beforehand.
Great teacher. Gives out review for midterm and final of approximately 12 questions and any 6 will be on exams. Go to class and you will do fine
Awesome professor. She really knows her stuff. Class consists of two exams and a 10 page paper. The exams are all essay and she gives the questions out ahead of time (14 questions and she picks 7 on the day of the exam). Time really needs to put in to studying for them I will say.
Great professor... although boring at times, she makes lecture interesting... Very easy grader. Take her for Juvenile Delinquency and Mental Illness..
The text book that she uses for her class she does not agree with; however, she doesn't express this until after you have turned in assignments, and then she marks you down because she based your answers on what the book says. I found her to be very unethical in her practices and comments that were made to certain students
Took her for Juvenile Delinquency, she was boring at times but kept to the book. Class was mainly a review of the chapter assigned to read. Test were write out (no multiple choice). She gives the study guide of the EXACT questions on the exam (gives you 14 questions she puts 7 on the exam). And answers to those questions easy to find in the book!
Really nice and awesome professor. 2 exams, 7 essay questions. She gives you 14 questions 2 weeks prior to the test. One 10 page paper about the sociological aspect of a disorder. I really enjoyed this class, very very interesting. You will begin to view people and your environment in a very different way. Easy 'A' if you know your stuff. Take her!!! :)
she is a lil hot older lady. She is demanding and not clear on what to study and goes by the book, test are short essays. get a study buddy or contact person and youll do fine
I really enjoyed her class. She was very nice and very helpful! Really recommend her, you will learn a lot and enjoy her lectures. Very interesting.
I really recommend her, she was very nice and extremely helpful! Really enjoyed her class!
She is very sarcastic and witty, which makes night classes somewhat bearable. 2 papers and 2 exams for the semester. Book is highly used especially for the exams. Book provides the theories, while she applies them to real life sitations in class.
A bit one sided. She speaks very slow and quiet and her voice tends to get you groggy. She is good though. Her topics are interseting which makes night classes bearable.
Super easy 2 papers one on a movie 5-6pgs one on a your own created juvenile program (super easy). Very sweet she's very willing to help but she may be a little boring voice is very monotone but its do able. Learned alot.
Boring lectures, attendance mandatory. Tests are memorization and verbatim. Can be an easy A if you study. There are two papers and they are both graded really easily. You don't need to pay attention in lecture. Just read.
midterm+ final+ book summaries=grade. make sure you do well in all of them. she also provides study guides :)
She's definitely a feminist, which is awesome. A little old school, but she is still great with current information. She clearly watches lots of late night TV. Only 3 assignments make up the whole class, so DON'T BLOW IT! Two essay exams and a large paper. Not too hard though, directions are clear.
Her lectures are mainly her speaking and writing a few things on the board. Graded on two test and two paper assignments. Gives a study guide of questions that will be on the test and chooses 34 of the questions on the study guide for the test.
Her lectures make sense but are not in sequence to the text so if you try going by the book, it can seem a bit confusing. Overall, it doesn't matter because the class is only based on 2 papers (information about the papers are in the syllabus) and 2 exam (she picks 714 questions from a handout given ahead of time). She takes a long time to grade
If you're an audio learner then this is the class for you. No powerpoints, no visual examples, no videos, just her talking.... Her exams are pure memorizing. Overall, she was below okay. I didn't learn anything.
She is a great professor and super easy to pass! No power points just verbal lectures. The lectures can be long and boring but make sure to pay attention. Never used the book and I passed with an A. Grades are based on two 5-6 page papers and 2 exams, no final. She gives a study guide with 14 possible questions and then picks 7 for the exam.
Final grade consists of two exams & a 10 page paper. She doesn't give hmwk. Do the math. Underperform on one test, it's over. She doesn't reply to emails, let alone, utilize her email account. She cancelled class seven times during the semester, sometimes twice in a week. She is incredibly ditzy, foggy-headed. I received a B, would not take again.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! She misplaced my first exam so i had to go through hell to obtain it, but it was mistake so i can forgive it but she did it again for the final exam. This professor literally lost my exam and gave me a 0% which resulted in me getting a D when i should have received an A. Horrible professor, avoid at all costs.
Throughout the entire semester she just graded our first exam. She got sick which delayed her grading. Essay's are specific and are 5-6 pages long. She hands out a study guide for the test. Its a lot to memorize so brace yourselves. Our graded assignments were posted after the semester was over which left the entire class clueless of their grade
She gives out a study guide a week or two before the exam. Memorize it word for word and you're good. This class only had three assignments. Two exams and one eight page paper. If you do poorly on one assignment then you're done. Go to her office hours, its a must. I received an A. Make sure to participate and be involved.
I honestly thought this class was really easy! Just show up and take good notes! She gives out the SG, I recommend working on it with other people, its easier that way. Lectures are boring, no lie. Grade is based off of 2 tests and a 8 page paper. She picks 7 questions from the study guide. Trust me its easy! Just study and attend.
She can be a space cadet. The course schedule is ever-changing. Stay up to date on the reading, be in class for the review, and participate. Her exams are multiple choice & fairly easy if you read and prepare. She is not a terribly tough grader on papers but don't expect them back anytime soon. If you are a self sufficient student, take her.
If you have the option, Id take another professor. Her lectures are very long and its hard to stay focused on what she is saying. Very monotonous and boring voice which is easy to tune out. Weekly 3pg chapter summaries, 1 midterm, 1 final. The midterm will take you by surprise, its much harder than everyone expects. Study guide for both exams
Avoid taking this professor. Bring the book and start reading because her lectures are pointless, she goes off topic a lot. She misses class often and still expects you to go into depth in the essay exam questions. She does give a study guide with 14 questions and tests 7 for test and for her teaching method she expects too much.
I had her for Sociology 463. She does not do power points, she just speaks. The midterm was a short essay format and the final will be the same. The midterm was not difficult, it was at an appropriate level of difficulty, but still easy. 10 weekly 2 page assignments but the book was interesting. I definitely recommend her.
This class is super easy. Two essay assignments and the a mid term and a final. She does not have any powerpoints . She just lectures and takes attendance every class. The book super easy to read. Yes it can get a bit boring at times, but this class is super straight forward. Provides a study guide, study it words for word and you'll pass.
Buy the book. Lecture is heavily structured around the book, are extremely boring with little important information, NO POWERPOINTS, & constantly goes on tangents. She's chill & funny & brings her dog. Attendance is mandatory even though you can just sleep or go on your phone. 1 paper, midterm, & final. Study guides are word-for-word on the exams.
She's easy and monotone. I won't take her again because she has a strange attitude against repeating information. I went to the bathroom and missed something during a lecture that was on an exam. The next week she was UNWILLING to give me a one-word answer because "she said it last week". I just don't get why she would not teach what's on the exam.
Hard to listen to, lecture is extremely dry. Reads strictly from her notes, rarely uses any other techniques. Exams are decent, her study guides consist of her reading out the test material one class prior. She does not repeat herself. She is hard with questions, not very helpful. I do not recommend this Professor.
I kid you not, she sits at the desk with her binder open and reads from her notes. No use of visual aides, no lectures, no videos, nothing. The only positive thing about this class is she brings her dog on Thursdays. 3 or 4 exams, 1 research paper and a journal that you do every class. Buy the book because her exams are from there and attend class
If your a visual learner or kinesthetic learner this class might not be for you. The professor is great on lecturing, but the tests are hard. And limited assignments to make up for points. The textbook is much needed for this class.
Take her! If you take notes of important things she says during lecture then you will succeed. If you're a daydreamer or don't like coming to class, then don't take her. Plus she brings her corgi and her neighbor to class who are both so sweet! One 8-10 page essay (it's super easy), one midterm, one final, one guest speaker, no homework.
Is nice enough. But her lectures are dry and she DOES NOT respond to emails. Her tests are definitions and she gives up to 90 definitions to memorize for each exam. Would not recommend taking her if you prefer interactive learning as she lectures vocal long and she is monotone. Only take if you have to.
Professor Gilbert has worked in mental health for 25+ years, so she knows her stuff and is really great at explaining it to students who know nothing about mental health. We have weekly 2 page summaries due that are very easy and you learn a ton from them. & there's two tests with essay questions but she gives you the ?'s ahead of time. Take her!
Her exams are straight up definitions. Up to 90 words to memorize for each exam. Takes 25 of those words randomly, so you dont know which ones you NEED to know for the exam. Her lectures are boring (even if the topic is interesting). Doable, but wouldnt recommend if you want an easy A (or B). Had to fight for my B after failing the first exam.
rambles & goes off track a lot/ told us at first we didn't need textbook & then 1 week before midterm, says we needed textbook or we'll fail/ exams for class consist of memorizing a list of terms & she picks out terms for students to define/ BUT she is willing to work with class/students so voice your concerns to her if anything needs adjusting!!!
Hands down! the toughest professor I've ever had to take. Her lectures are not interesting, they are boring. She just sits there and reads off her notes with her monotone voice. For the exams, she hands out between 80 to 90 words to study and she only chooses 25. You have to write out the definition exactly how it is in the textbook. Don't take her
Very tough professor, I had to learn the material myself. 4 exams, and a daily journal used for attendance. It's difficult to say what's going to be on exam, she had a question on her exam asking what her dog's name was (Belle). Interesting topic, but she does not like star wars and tigers for some reason. Inspiring to be around!
Very difficult to contact. Doesn't respond to emails and takes months to grade assignments. Half the tests were not given back to review. All tests are fill in the blank vocabulary. Prof. sits and reads from her notes all class with no visuals. Will get sassy if asked to repeat herself. Changed the date of the final without announcing it.
Worst professor I had this semester. She reads off her notes in a monotone voice for her lectures. Nothing she lectures is on the test. Her test are vocab words that we are suppose to define. She gives us 50-80 words to memorize but only chooses 25 for the exam. Takes forever to grade exams. Hard to contact and rarely responds to emails.
She sits at the front of the class and lectures in a monotone voice from her binder full of notes. She will repeat if you ask her to. She does not use BeachBoard at all. She talks about politics every class, and she'll go off on tangents about everything that is wrong with our government. She doesn't use the book.
Horrible professor! try to avoid taking her class if you can. Goes off topic and lectures by sitting in front of the class reading off her notes. Worst class I took this semester.
Although she is one of the easiest and nicest professors I have ever taken, her lectures are super boring. Only 3 vocabulary exams are given and LITERALLY just defining 25 words. She also requires you to do a daily journal for attendance and a research paper. I would take her if you want a chill class, but be ready to sit through her lectures!
Very unclear of assignments, will not explain why you got a grade for an assignment. Gets frustrated with confrontation and does not want to address issue. Do not take, avoid at all cost. Also, all she does is read off her binder for a whole 1:15. Literally said you could sleep in her class and wont help when study guide is given.
I wish I could say good things about her. But she is the most unprofessional teacher I have ever had. Get's upset when you ask about your grades or getting your work back. Doesn't return homework or tests for a long time (if she even does). Super unclear lectures, directions for homework, and tests. My friend never got her test back. Not good
Completely appalled by this professor. She got so mad at a student who was simply asking her whether we would get our homework back before the final because she wanted to know her grade going into the final. I also overheard she never returned another student's test. The student looked like she was going to cry. This class was so stressful.
could not ask questions about grade after approaching her in office hours after being brushed off. unclear syllabus and grading. does not do power point or notes on board after first few classes then reads from her notes fast so it is hard to write everything down. thinks that 7 pgs worth of memorizing test material is fair. Do not take.
Summary once a week except for week of test. Lectures are interesting but often are confusing due to tangents. She makes notes on the board for the first two weeks then stops and only reads notes off of binder. Seems to get flustered when asked about getting summaries back or grades. Tests were hard, 15 terms and you had to know 7
Just don't. I didn't learn nearly anything on a topic I really wanted to learn about. I don't know my grade because she doesn't grade anything throughout the semester. This professor really doesn't seem to care about students or helping them with anything.
WORST professor I've ever had at CSULB. She is the most dry and boring lecturer, does not use power points, just sits in front of the class and talks in a monotone voice for 1.25 hours. She does not grade anything until the last 3 weeks of the semester so you have no idea what your grade is. She is unaccommodating for office hours. Don't take her.
Literally wrote down everything she lectured about on the test (required green books) and somehow got a D on the exam???
Currently enrolled in SOC 320 class. Worst class ever. Super monotone & talks about the same thing each class. Very unclear and unorganized. Do not recommend taking this class.
Super easy A; I recommend taking her if you want one less class to worry about. Although it is true that her grading criteria isn't clear and the lectures are boring, exams and assignments are still incredibly easy. You absolutely have to try fail, in order to fail.
I wish I would've paid attention to the reviews before I enrolled in her course. She added weekly assignments & quizzes when classes were transferred online to ensure we were "still doing the reading" during the pandemic. It was really stressful on top of my other classes. Lecture was boring & doesn't know how to teach. She was the worst. AVOID!
She isn't that good with lecturing and makes you rely on the book. If you ask her a question she will answer it by saying "it's in your book". 2 tests and 2 papers. For the tests she puts out a study guide with 14 questions and chooses 7 out of the 14 to put on the test. Not the worst class but you basically teach yourself.
Prof Gilbert was very interesting to listen to during lecture, but most of her lecture tends to be tangents/discussions based around textbook concepts. I took this class online due to COVID, and honestly she could have altered the class for online format in a better way. We had 3 exams with no final, and she provides a study guide.
Easiest class ever, but don't expect to learn anything from her lectures as she just rambles on about the most random things. 3 open book exams followed by 3 "lists of concepts" which she gives you a list of terms to define from the book. One 5-7 page paper that is super easy. I really like Dr. Gilbert as a person, but didn't learn much in class.
Honestly shes an ok professor. Shell talk about things that arent related to lecture. Get side tracked often. Itd be more beneficial to read the book instead of going to lecture. Literally easiest class. Had to do papers every week based off a book we have to read. Not too bad. No quizzes. Just 10 papers (2 pg), exam 1 & 2.
Professor Gilbert is great. She has a really calm and analytical personality. Her lectures are interesting if you pay attention. She does not cover all the topics so you would need to read the book. Her class consists of: 3 exams, 3 easy study guides, and 1 paper. Paying attention and reading are a must in order to pass this class!
Worst professor in the Sociology department. I honestly dont know how she is a professor. She never knows what class shes teaching, gets upset when anyone asks a question about assignments, beach board is not updated, and overall unprofessional. Class is easy but shes an awful professor. You wont learn anything useful. Avoid if you can
Literally the worst professor I've had at CSULB. I was excited for this class but I didn't learn a single thing. She doesn't even talk about the material half the time and rambles on and on and on about random stuff that doesn't relate. I don't know how she even has a job here it's kind of ridiculous.
Professor Gilbert is easily one of the worst professors I have had in my years at CSULB. She rambles on and on about topics that have nothing to do with the test material. The paper was a bare-bones prompt that we were required to write 7 pages about. Steer clear of her if you can.
Dr. Gilbert is very rude and disrespectful to students, especially when they ask questions about due dates or assignments. She never knows what class she is teaching either, but will get mad at you when you are confused. Take her as a last resort. 2 papers and 2 exams. Even though the workload isn't too bad, this class is NOT WORTH IT.
The worst professor at csulb. She doesnt care about her students and picks favorites fersure. Students cant even ask questions and just says look at the syllabus, even tho its outdated and has all the wrong due dates. Very boring class.
Prof Gilbert is nice and her class is simple. There are 2 tests & our class also had a PowerPoint presentation due which was extremely easy. Her class is a lecture and you just have to write notes about what she is saying. For the tests she gives you a study guide and chooses 6/13 questions. Answers are in textbook/from her lecture. Super simple!
Great professor! Her class consists of two exams and one presentation. The presentation is about family and the theory so it is really easy. She gives great creative space for your own presentation. Show up to class pay attention to lecture, take notes and you will be good. Study guide is provided for the exams and it is what will be on the test.
I took this class not knowing what to expect for an in-person class back on campus. Professor Gilbert is very insightful about current events and ties these into the lecture. The study guides she provides are questions that you will find in the exam. She is open to questions that students have. She is really great!
Disregard the negative reviews. Her class was pretty simple: show up to class, take notes, and prepare for 2 essays and 2 exams. She provides study guides but only puts half of the questions on the exams. She lectures throughout the whole class so it might get boring but her random humor and stories makes the class interesting.
Professor Gilbert is very passionate, and it shows during her lectures. Even though she does give 1 group presentation and 2 exams the study guides had everything that were on the exams . The class itself was super easy overall though. As long as you keep up with the work she was very sweet and accessible if I ever had any questions and concerns.
This class consisted of 4 exercises(mini essays) & two exams which are vocab words that need to be defined. There is no way the she'll give you access to the powerpoints so you have to go to class. The textbook doesn't need to be purchased since you can use it through the library website but you'll need it for the exercises. definitely recommend!
Professor Gilbert is very caring and wants to see her students do well. Class is very heavy on lecture & they can be pretty boring, but overall a good class. 2 papers, 2 exams.
Professor Gilbert is the easiest professor I've had so far. two tests and one presentation. her study guide is the questions on the test, study the answers and you'll be fine. shes funny and straightforward, a very easy class overall.
Class of 2019 here - How is this woman still alive XD?
