She can be confusing sometimes, but she is always willing to help. Very easy class, A/B average. She'll always lets you use a notecard for tests and exams.
she makes calculus such an easy course, she gives a lot of extra points in examns... and, if she knows you care about her class and do hmwtk... she will give an A definitively.
Hated her as a teacher. I attended every class and did all my homework, and still failed. I even met with her regularly. She's bad at teaching and bad at grading.
This teacher is an idiot. You will get more help from the TA. You will have to go to all classes and take every bit of unhelpful notes to have a good chance. I believe everyone in my class has corrected her. Keeping this in mind, note cards are legit
a good calc professor. explains things fairly concisely, and if she doesnt at first than she will if you ask. test was no harder than any other professor.
Get on her good side and you will be ok...basically this class is all stuff you should already know...im horrible at math and i got a 101 on my first exam
She is fairly easy if and only if you attend class and not sleep through it, actually do the homework, and maybe ask for clarity. The quizes and test are like the homework problem. I wouldn't reccommend her, but I had no choice
Easy course. Pay attention to the material on her quizes and the exams will be easy. Your allowed to bring a full page cheat sheet.
For non-math people this is the class for you! Yes, you have to do some work, but it is all manageable.
She was really helpful. If you dont understand she will go back over it with you. Her tests can be a bit tough at times though.
Prof wants u to learn and very nice. will answer all ur questions. Quizzes and Exams are all straightforward (no tricks) similar to hwk problems. u should do the hwk if u want to understand even though she doesnt check it
two words...she-devil..!!
She is very helpful and goes over all material till EVERYONE understands. She also allows the use of a notecard with notes for all of her tests including a larger one for the final. Great teacher actually made me understand math for once.
good calc professor. quizes were fairly easy and tests no harder than ne other teacher.
she is very very nice. Was late to class like everyday. If you dont understand do the homework, otherwise its not totally necessary. Go to her office hours if u need help cuz she is very helpful and nice. Got an A.
Good Teacher really laid back, your grade is your responsibility but she will help you until you understand it.
Worst Teacher Ever, Not clear in her explantions, and Maple Assignments are ridiculus! Stay away from HER!!
Strange subject, not as boring as most math classes. She's a pretty easy grader and will do her best to help you do well in her class.
granfield's awesome, actually. she allows as much as you can fit on a notecard (both sides) for tests. she has afterhours help sessions. she'll do her best to help you out, but you have to take responsibility for it yourself. you have a few tests and a ridiculously easy 'paper' to write. not a bad class, since it's required.
GREAT professor!! i really recommend her for any math or synthesis class you need to take. gives you homework but you don't need to do it except for practice. i HATE math and really suck at it but i still got an A with her...you can have a cheat sheet during exams which are exactly like the problems you do in class, so you need to attend class.
Eccentric, but very helpful. She explains things well and is always willing to help when needed. She makes math fun.
very sweet lady. actually cares to teach you so that you will get this stupid credit out of the way. notecards and calculators are allowed on quizzes and tests. and she works out any problems out for you without making you feel dumb or anything. i actually can pay attention since she's so friendly and speaks softly. if you hate math, take her. =)
Decent class. She's very friendly and realizes that 99.9% of the students taking the class are taking it for a requirement, so she doesn't take the class too seriously. Tests are challenging, but you're allowed a notecard for formulas and such. Most of the homework isn't graded, so you don't have to do it if you don't want to.
I think the class would've been more enjoyable if it was the MATH 106 class. She often corrects herself while teaching at the same time, making it difficult to understand. She skips steps like no body's business, which gets irritating. The book is no help either. Matter of fact, HNRS 225 is a waste of a class altogether. It doesn't seem like math.
Horrible math teacher. Seems as though frequently skipping class would be a viable option. I had already taken a calc class in HS, so her extremely tedious and incoherent explanation of the concepts made this class a lot more harder than it should be. The tests are relatively easy if you learn to ignore her awkward teachings & go right to the book.
one of the nicest professors @ mason. math is hard, but she is very understanding and tries her best to make you understand math concepts. i would rec. her to anyone taking math 105. she is better than the other math profs.
very sweet lady. if you are horrible at math and need this requirement out of the way, take her. she really cares and will make sure you pass. just go to class and take notes. you're allowed notecards with formulas for quizzes and exams as well as a calculator. if you don't understand something, make sure to ask, she'll definitely help you.
If Math is not your subject, she is the professor for you!! I hate math, and she made it interesting and very clear. GO TO CLASS!! This is her only thing, she has ots of extra credi, etc, only available if you go to class and get it. She was great!
She's a very sweet lady and she will help you out if you talk to her. However, she's a little flighty and hard to follow. Maybe it would have been better if it wasnt calc. I was failing at the midterm and ended up with a b-. Overall not a bad teacher. If I was good at math I think her class would have been different.
Good Teacher... explains well... helps ya well... test get a lot harder as time goes on i went B A C B but the last two had huge curves
Granfield is really cute. Shes a nerdy lady who smiles easy, but is a little scatterbrained. She doesn't always teach what she tests on and you won't cover hardly any calculus at least when I took her. But she's easy, nice, and will help time pass. If you want someone more inspiring take Aligood, even Granfield recommends her.
Very nice teacher.
Prof. Granfield is a good teacher for knowledge of material. Her class isn't especially interesting, but not a lot can be said for math in general where entertainment is concerned. If I wasn't such a poor student in Math, I'd say she is a good teacher. She helped me a lot during office hours, and I'd have a grade much worse than a D if shehadn't
Do the turn-in homework, study for the quizes, study for the tests, not a hard teacher
Really nice lady. Usually gives really good study guides before tests. Will tell you ahead of time when she wants to collect homework. I'm not particularly gifted with math, but I really enjoyed her class and did pretty well. She's funny at times, too, and pretty easygoing.
This professor is Awesome! She is very excited about math, and is always open to questions in class. She is willing to sit in her office and help each student understand everything. Going to class is highly recommended b/c she will go over almost everything on the test. The book is only for practice, but not necessary HIGHLY RECOMMEND Prof Granfiel
wonderful!!! She explains everything well and answers all questions asked. If you're not a math student by nature, take her!!!!
Really sweet lady. Not the greatest professor. She's a lot more helpful and understanding if you approach her outside of class. I think she's a great person, but I was totally lost in her class. I'm not that great at math, and she jumped around without explaining the bigger context of the math.
Math is my absolute worst subject but I managed to get a high B with her help. She's a wonderful teacher and makes sure you understand the material. She's really here to teach and help you out. If you must take math, take it with her.
This woman is a godsend. I knew nothing about math (hadn't taken any for 1.5 years prior to this class), and I pulled a C- in this class when I had a low, low F at midterms because she was just that helpful. She's willing to work with you & meet with you to make sure you understand. Excellent lady!
I love Prof. Granfield. She is one of those teachers that seems to actually care if you fail/do well/understand. She will go out of her way to set up study sessions with students outside of class. None of the exams art multiple choice, but she does give partial credit. Her study guides look a lot like her tests.
Amazing math teacher, definitely one the best ive ever had. TAKE HER! shes so straightforward and you really just have to make sure you do the homework problems and follow her lectures, then youll get an A!
Wow, I suck at math and I actually pulled As and Bs on these tests! She is a fab teacher. I hadn't taken math since HS (9 years) and was dreading this class, but she was so awesome that I actually never dreaded going. Teaches math that actually applies to my life. TAKE HER!!!!!
Great Professor, this was my 3rd time around taking this, and I got an A this time. She's very helpful, straight forward with what she wants. Doesn't try to confuse algebra with calculus. Don't need a calculator. Highly Recommended.
This professor is amazing!! It was a great way to start of my freshmen semester. She is so straightfoward and clear! Just go to her lectures and do the homework and you will be fine!! She will answer any questions that you have. You should be fine.
She is SO nice. Kinda like your grandma--very sweet. However, she can be scatter-brained at times and sometimes makes learning the material harder than it needs to be. Most the time, I just taught myself from the book what we had gone over. But she's very helpful, doesn't take attendance, and is pretty chill overall.
Simple: The BEST math teacher I have had, EVER.You go over one idea for weeks, even after she's already hammered it in.Talks you through every step. Even if you don't do the homework but pay attention in class, you'll be more than fine.
i took pre-calc in high school and so i can tell you with 100% certainty that i have never been so confused my entire life
DO NOT TAKE HER. she is a cruel and unusual monster. she gives you 20 mins for 40 questions. she lives in the forest on a hut on chicken feet, she loves to gobble children with her shiny iron teeth. she doesnt have a proper grading system, she grades on her opinion and your class attendence. she is an evil women.
ummm i think she has dementia. i went to everyclass, did all the homework and put in a lot of effort but she gave me a F. i think she escaped from a nursing home and is using gmu as a shelter. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS esp if you plan to take calc later.
wow were to begin with this one....she does not explain anything, she leave us with piece of paper that has a list of problems in the book and tells to do it when we get around to it. I have seen her after class but all that did was confuse me even more (im sure it made me dumber)...TO PREVENT LOSS OF IQ AVOID AT ALL COST
very good teacher. if you dont understand something in class, go see her because she is alwayyys willing to help, and is happy to do it! very sweet and funny... love her!
Amazing teacher who is more than willing to stay and help students. Best Math teacher I've ever had.
Highly recommend. One of the most helpful and dedicated teachers I've ever had. Goes the extra mile to help you learn the material when you approach her outside of class. I'm awful at math (got C's in high school) but got a high grade here. She grades fairly, gives partial credit, etc. Use the tutoring center, ask extra questions & study hard.
Looking at some of the negative comments, all I can say is that you are bitter, vindictive (and clueless?) students. All the people I know who have taken from her have absolutely loved her. She likes to make math accesible and manageable for students who are challenged in that department. I really liked her. Take her!!
Taking a look at the negative comments below, my only conclusion is that you must simply clueless or mean-spirited (or some combination thereof?). She is possibly the nicest, most helpful professor I've ever had. She loves helping math-challenged students. All my friends who've taken her absolutely love her. Highly recommended!!
na na na na na na na na CAT LADY!!! CAT LADY!!! Boring lectures, stupud person, occasional brain farts. Quizzes and tests are relatively easy, though. As long as you understand the material you dont have to do the practice problems
She's really nice and dedicated and all, but she just makes things confusing. I tried just paying attention in class to learn the material, but she made limits seem confusing, LIMITS! After simply reading the textbook, it was crystal. Easy "A" though as long as you do the work (which isn't much).
Professor Granfield is the sweetest professor at George Mason! Sometimes it is a little hard to understand her teaching, but her tests are not bad. She is more than willing to spend time reviewing material in office hours and will change her hours to accommodate students. HIGHLY recommend!!!!
Take my opinion seriously. I'm not a slacker or a bad student. I never rate anyone, but felt I had to post about this professor. She's horrible. Loves to confuse the class, teaches simple examples then tests on hard ones. "i took points off to help u out!" She plays with your grade. Doesn't test what she teaches. Class feels very long and boring.
She is really nice and tries to answer all of your questions. Although at first you may think she explains things too fast at the end you end up getting it. I totally recommend taking her course it's not hard as long as you do your hw and pay attention in class!
This class was incredibly boring and completely useless. I basically taught myself calculus. Her tests are easy though if you can do the worksheets she gives out ahead of time. I would take another professor if at all possible.
She is not a very good professor. Her lectures are completely useless and unclear. Her tests and quizzes are very tough... she uses trick questions and brags about how she "got ya" after she takes off points. Plays around with grades and quirky. I wouldn't be surprised if that one positive comment below was made by her.
People who say she confuses or plays with your grade probably sat in the back and talked throughout her lectures. She teaches how to solve the problems which are practically identical to ones on the tests. She's very kind and respectful and answers emails promptly. Kind of funny and cute in a weird way, she is a very dedicated and fair teacher.
I'm a mathaphobe who dreaded taking a math class but this teacher ROCKED! She gave timely announcements, told you what to study, always answered questions quickly via email and actually used the best of Blackboard. For those that didn't like her, I'd assume you didn't study, didn't pay attention and are blaming her for your mistakes. Too bad.
To start off, our class was much larger than it was designed to be, it had over 250 students. Prof. tends to move a little fast and it almost mean when requesting help. In a class that is supposed to be super easy math, she almost makes it hard. That said, she complains about most of the class having poor scores and doesn't do anything to fix it.
She is one of the best Math teachers. Pre-calc is not extremely hard but she totally helps you understand the content and goes over examples or hw every class. She also post past exams to study which helps greatly. She is available for help. If you like to work hard but also have a good professor to help you understand TAKE HER!
She's unbelievably sweet, allows laptops in class, will do everything in her power to get you to pass, very clear. Don't let her elderly appearance fool you, she is full of energy and is the sweetest teacher i've ever had. she really knows her stuff. RECOMMENDED.
Professor Granfield knows her stuff. She did several problems of each type from every single chapter. Yes, she moved fast and told people kinda sternly that she already answered their question (if someone already asked it), but she prepares you for the test and quizzes. The one time i went to see her, she was extremely helpful. I really liked h
Even tho there was 200+ kids in my class she still managed to be a very good prof. She posted everything up on Blackboard (Notes, Study Aids, etc). She let us use "cheat sheets" for all exams. She responds to emails fast! She is very willing to help. Yes, towards the end of the course she got a little cranky but who wouldn't with that many kids?
Prof. Granfield is an AWESOME math teacher. I am one of those people who hates math but even I enjoyed her 106 class so much that I took her again for 110. The material covered is not all that hard, but if you are struggling just go see her. She makes everything very clear. Great professor!
I always felt bad for her because our 300 person class always talked over her. You could tell she was sad, but she's such an adorable lady! If you go to her during office hours, she LOVES it and is willing to help you out. Lots of homework from the book and pop iclicker quizzes....so attending class is wise. But whether you leave early is up to you
Granfield is great. If you go to her office hours she will totally work with you on anything you are having trouble with. I don't like math at all and I still pulled an A. If you need a math credit but aren't good at math, take her class.
Such a nice lady, and made the concepts REALLY easy. I am not a math person, but found this class really easy.
I am not a math person at all and she knows that most people in a Liberal Arts Approach to Calculus class aren't going to be and she incorporates that fact very well. Granfield is extremely helpful during office hours and going to them is the best way to learn the consepts from class.
Granfield is a pretty great instructor. I was in a huge lecture class and I still learned a ton. I'm not a math person AT ALL and I got 100's on all of her tests. Just go to class, pay attention, do the review sheet before the test and you'll be fine. I don't understand how some people did poorly in this class.
So helpful and nice! This class is super easy if you reach out for help.
Very sweet and funny, she loves to make math jokes or tell us the history behind the math and gets so excited about it. She is very willing to help. Sometimes she starts going through everything pretty quickly so if you have a question ask it. Webassign assignments aren't bad, make use of the practice another version button.
Professor Granfield is very passionate about math and it shows in her teaching. She uses Webassign to post most of the assignments oline for the lessons with a couple of actual paper hws that are graded. 3 tests plus the final and a couple of opportunities for ex credit. Reviews for tests and finals are very helpful!
She is the perfect honors college professor. She is eager to help students and is passionate about her subject topic. As long as you do the study guides she gives before the test and know how to get the right answers, you will be fine.
Granfield is the nicest professor of all time! I'm horrible at math (no experience in calc) and she helped me big time. If you don't understand something, just go to her office hours! They help so much. She genuinely wants her students to do well so she is very willing to work with you!
SHE IS THE NICEST LADY ALIVE!!!! BLESS THIS LADY. go to her to get help. she wants you to get an A. Shes so so so so so nice
LOVE MY GIRL PATTY. She is a great honors college professor. She makes Liberal Arts Calculus easy. Go to class (even though it's boring), and do all the online homework. She is so understanding and a great woman. TAKE HER!
She is really nice and enthusiastic about what she teaches! It was my hardest class this semester though. I put a lot of effort into studying for her tests (doing the practice exams really pays off)and sometimes the topics were confusing and I would have to look up how to do problems.
A great professor who is there to explain any confusion you have with the materials. She is funny at times and a very nice lady :)
This class was a super easy A. It took her a while to respond to emails, but when she did she was helpful and invested in each student. She NEVER took attendance, and put all the notes online, so I only went to class the first day and then whenever we had a quiz/test. She's really nice :)
I learned this material previously in high school, but felt I didn't have a strong foundation with the it (my teachers weren't all that great). Granfield presented the material in a new, clear and easy way. She is a nice person and will clearly answer any questions you have. Highly recommended and would take another math class with her if I could!
Sooooo extremely helpful if you ask. You have to ask for help, but if you do she'll make sure you pass. She wants everyone to do well. She made me like math.
Just go to class and do the web assigns. Other than that you should pass and if you're having trouble then talk to her. She cares a lot and will try to help out as best she can.
Granfield is possibly the nicest teacher that I have ever had and cares a lot about students understanding the material. Sweetest lady on the planet + hw never gets overwhelming.
Professor Granfield was one the better professors I've had. She's so sweet and acts like such a dork when she teaches math. She is incredibly nice and will answer most of your questions. She is very clear and the homework is usually a breeze. You definitely understand the material better if you go. Barely even cracked the textbook.
Professor Granfield is really a good math professor. While the class wasn't the most interesting, it was definitely do-able for a non-math person. She is very passionate about her subject, which is nice. If you need help, she's always eager to help you understand.
If you haven't taken Calculus TAKE HER CLASS. If you've taken a bit of calculus, specifically first derivatives and limits, you will probably do fine in Dr. Allegood's class, but you might be challenged. This class literally was Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc until the last 2 weeks where it all tied together. If you aren't a math person, this class is 4 u.
Tests are hard, but she's very nice, very helpful.
Professor Granfield is passionate about teaching math, which leads to both great explanations of the topics but also lectures that are long and sometimes boring. There is a textbook for the class but I didn't use mine- just the WebAssign code. The homework isn't hard nor does it take a lot of time. The tests are fair.
She is a very sweet and kind professor. If you have trouble on the material go visit her during office hours and she will explain. Don't buy the textbook because all you need is WebAssign for homework and checking grades. About 3-4 tests throughout with long lectures, explains in theories. Study!!! She really appreciates it when students try.
Why does the honors program only have one professor teaching honors calculus? She is not a good teacher. She talks in theories no one understands. She goes on math tangents and nothing is relevant. Tests are hard, quizzes tough. Good luck.
She is so sweet and will help you if struggling. She is not the best at explaining things. I took this class after taking calc in high school so it was a breeze but I could tell others were struggling. Only need the textbook code to do homework which was about 15 problems every week.
I really liked prof. Granfield. She made calculus really easy and the quizzes and tests were based off the homework and study guide so if you did those, you are good to go. She is kind and readily available after class for extra help.
Such a sweetheart!! She has multiple opportunities outside of class to get additional help and she provides a little bit of math history as well. She totally gets that we're not math people and isn't judgmental at all.
Professor Granfield is a very good professor and makes the class very easy to grasp and thrive in. Very sweet and accessible if you need help.
An absolute sweetheart; don't hesitate to contact her if you have questions, she will reply ASAP and help you with whatever you are struggling with. The class itself is not hard; take notes during class especially when she does example problems and use the online textbook and you will do just fine! Tests are also exactly like the study guide!
She is THE BEST. She cares so much about her students. The class is not hard, and if you're struggling she'll help. She was understanding when I had an emergency the night before the final and gave me an extra week to take it. She's also the best advisor in the honors college!! She is a GEM I cannot recommend her enough! I wish she was my grandma!!
She's great! She explains thoroughly and is so nice. There is a lot of homework but she'll go over it before it's due if you ask. She also gives so many opportunities outside of class to get help. She really wants everyone to do well.
This is a suppppeeerrrr easy class. If you are completely unfamiliar with math, this is the honors math course to take. If you do not like math but have to take the honors math course, take this one. It's really easy, and Granfield explains well for those students that may struggle. Definitely recommend.
I heard that MATH290 was a hard course because it was an intro to proofs, but Professor Granfield had made it really easy for me. I went to her office hours every week and got over 93% for every single test (not including the final). The tests are really similar to the homework so if you do the hw, you're set to pass with flying colors :)!
Here's the drill . Enormous amounts of homeworks(1/2 per week) that doesn't for much of your grade. Tests & Quizzes were somewhat based on the study guide & the homework but she always adds difficult things that you've never seen on either. So getting an A is very difficult. She's a good person but not a good teacher. U have to teach urself
Best professor Ive had in my life. As a person who has been struggling w/ math forever, Prof Granfield's class was incredible. She loves teaching and is an expert in her class. I walked in not even knowing how to factor and left with an A-. Believe me, I'm like, rock bottom. If I can do it you def can. HW is not as much as you think, and it HELPS!
Really smart and very nice professor, but she has a tendency to skip steps while explaining problems, which can be difficult if you're not great at math. Overall the class is worth it.
The kindest professor I've had at mason, a real gem. Genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Writes out literally every step and will explain things over if you need. Hosts lots of review sessions outside of class and super helpful in office hours.
Patricia is super sweet. sometimes her lectures can be all over the place though, so while I had an easy time, if you do struggle in math, I would suggest getting a tutor or teaming up with a friend who is good in math. The beginning of the class is fine, but it amps up pretty quickly. Extra credit is given at the end. Homework is all online
One of the best professors Ive ever had. Shows every step of a problem and is willing to explain things multiple times. Always announces quizzes beforehand. Kind, respected, made Calculus enjoyable. She has a great sense of a humour and is willing to connect with students. Great Professor . If you have to take a Calculus class, take her!
While Professor Granfield herself is a gem, her class can be more challenging than it should be for a basic introduction to statistics class.
Very nice lady. Is a little confusing at times, but wants you to do well.
