Very nice lady, and the most organized prof in 2nd year Bio. study those FIGURES!
i curse the final!!
wow sooooooo nice and friendly!! Her lectures are interesting and she makes a difficult class seem pretty understanding. I'd recommend her any day. She drops by labs to see how u doing.
Amazing Prof. She's organized, very helpful, and very understanding. She actually wants you to learn. Her students come first. She has a passion for what she's doing, so don't be surprised if you're actually amazed at what you're learning.
she is not easy at all....tests were brutal !!
Very good prof. Her tests are EASY; you can bring a sheet of notes to exam. Well use of pictures and videos. She writes out the notes the same time as you do. So we are all in the same line and pace.
the midterm was easy.the exam was killer!! it was brutal!! she even lowered the lab marks for the class ,so that people cant score much overall in this course.teaches well but will kill you on the finals.
A pretty organized and very helpful prof. Her tests were not that hard, but make sure you knwo all th diagrams that she shows in class.
Easy midterm- brutal exam!!! Wow! She got us all there! The average was 59% and she lowered the lab grades too! Killer exam, all right!!!
She's very nice but the course is one of the biggest bores you may ever encounter. I actually spent lectures thinking of how much fun it could be to jump off a cliff or go for a root canal!
Dr. Pat is one of the best professors I have had in university. She is very helpful and encouraging. You learn great presentation skills in her class and I recommend this course for any upper year biology student
dr. pat is one of the best profs in the bio department. She explains things clearly in class with her own notes and refers to many diagrams and videos which give lots of clarity. She is also very helpful and kind. Overall take a class she's teaching.
easy midterm ,hard final.good lecture notes. she's really really nice .one of the best profs at york.
Dr. Pat is very helpful when u need the extra help b4 tests or exams. She is very approachable :) Her notes were very clear her tests were very fair with 1 or 2 trick questions. She has the heart for students as can be seen with allowance of crib sheets to bring into midterm and exam. This helps the students study effectively.
Very nice course. There's a lot of information to absorb, but if you take the time and read your notes and some of text you will do very well on the tests. The exam is actually easier than the tests (ALL multiple choice). Compared with the horrible BIOL 2020 (bad prof), taking this course was surely chillin. May the force be with you lol.....
She is a good prof but i found her midterms so tricky and she expects you to know every detail.
She talks with passion and presents notes with diagrams and videos for entertainment. Her tests were easy and cheat sheets were allowed. The final was however difficult even with cheat sheet. There is alot of material to cover in this course but if you join her notes and notes you made in the text then you should do well in this course
it's a good course, but requires a lot of time. even though shes allows cheat sheets, they aren't that helpful for the midterm but were helpful for the exam. Exam was fair but her midterm was hard!
.1) The course title is very misleading, cuz this class actually involves understanding the results and conclusions of research papers (not just methods). 2) she doesn't lecture it's students of the class. 3) Exams and tests have questions that test your understanding of the papers in a different way from the way they're presented
interesting lectures. includes visuals and videos to make everything interesting and clear.
This woman is unreal. She refuses to post lecture slides, but then doesnt even prepare a power point presentation with complete notes. She actually thinks that her headings are going to be useful, but refuses to post them before class! Take a peek at the old course stats, she ensures a C average.
Not a good experience taking BCHM 2021. No posted notes. I spent so much time going over the material in the book, re-taking notes and studying a lot, and I didn't do so well. The midterm was good, but the exam was hard - not the best way to evaluate students, esp after the strike. Note sheets were allowed, but I did not find them much useful.
The midterm was overly detailed, average was in the 50s. Half the class failed, and is urged to drop. Bell curve anyone?
Got B+ on the midterm. Im happy considering the average was 57. Never saw a D+ average on a test before. Her questions are a little confusing and ambiguous, and the same may be said about the answers she provides. It seems like alot of people knew the knowledge, just how the questions and answers were worded caused some confusion.
She's pretty hard, true. But if you attend all your lectures and make a minimal effort to read your notes and consult the text, you'll do fine. I'm not a particularly studious person, but I got an A. Read all her exam questions very, very carefully. Try to think about what each option would signify.
A little confusing since the sections to read from the book are all over the place. Extremely hard test/exam. But you get cheat sheets, which are helpful A LOT if you know your stuff. Must attend lectures. They are not posted online. Test all multiple choice and with your cheat sheet and knowledge it is possible to do well. It is hard, very hard.
She is very approachable... will make sure your questions have been answered. However, she goes a bit too fast in lectures and covers A LOT of material in one lecture. Tests are really tricky... i.e. is the answer just A or is it A AND B.
Attend all lectures and write down everything she says. Use textbook for more detailed explanations for concepts discussed in class. Midterm much easier than the final exam, however, read all her questions carefully and at least twice and you'll do well!
Make sure you copy down everything she writes on the overhead. Then go home and read the text for topics covered in the lectures. Do not waste your time reading anything else. Once you know the concepts, just memorize all her lecture notes and copy as much detail as you can in the cheat sheets. You will have your A.
Great prof. I got an A in her class. Make sure you attend all lectures and read txtbook material that was discussed in class. It's that easy.
she is good at lecturing but very hard exams!the average of the class was 56 in the first midterm!!
She's a great professor very clear and you will not believe how much she knows about biology, she's what every professor should be like. Her tests aren't really easy though so study for them. You HAVE to go to class tests are straight from there, and don't get freaked by the huge text, you don't end up covering most of it.
Amazing Professor. Extremely knowledgeable and class attendance is a must. Takes notes for you to copy during lecture which is what all the tests are based on so put it all on your teach sheet. Best prof I've had yet.
Amazing prof, but really hard tests/final.
i think shes a very nice woman and a lovely professor. however i for one didnt like her teaching method. we spent 1hr1/2 writing down whatever she wrote down on the overhead. her tests are tricky with too many options. we were allowed cheat sheets which was only helpful if you put every little detail on it.
I did not enjoy her teaching style. She moves through the lecture too fast and copying down what she wrote on the overhead wasn't helpful because it's just keywords. I think most people recorded her lectures so that they could go back and study all the details. I ended up taking the course in the summer with Dr. Nivillac-much better imo.
Go to all the lectures! copy everything down and study your notes plus figure captions no additional detail from text. Tests are fair but not easy you have to know the material well! The good thing is that she is clear about her expectations "know my notes"
Her teaching style really did not work for me. Lectures were dull and boring. We just took notes from the overhead and had a "cheat sheet" but the questions sucked. If you like multiple choice with like 7 choices, takes this course. Didn't work for me but it might for you.
please stay away from her ,please
Dr. Lakin-Thomas was a nice prof and knew her stuff well. However, I did not like her teaching style. She wrote on the doc cam and her notes were incomplete and difficult to follow. Tests were fair, don't rely too much on the cheat sheets!
Her tests are TOO DETAILED and have way too many options (AND the questions are all tricky-NOT fair AT ALL. She is dead boring. overall not a good prof. Take it with someone else if you can.
The classes are so boring that every minute feels like a century. My least prof at york hands down. Avoid avoid avoid
Horrible prof. Boring and her teaching style is so outdated! Tests are tricky and very detailed with too many options. Avoid taking this class with her. Worst prof I've had at york.
I guess I'm in the minority but I absolutely love her lectures. She's very clear and you must take detailed notes to do well. I've done extremely well on the midterms. They are not tricky, but rather fair and a very good overview of the course material. She's quick to reply to questions and offers an explanation whenever asked. I enjoy this prof.
She seems to think that this is the only course on our plates. If you are a full-time student with 5 serious courses, it's extremely difficult to catch up with the amount of info she forces in each class. Test are multiple choice, but go from a to f, and are extremely tricky. take this course at your own risk.
The tests are tricky. You don't have to read the textbook, just make good notes in class and study off them. Only use the textbook as a reference or to study for the figures she gives in class. I felt like no matter how hard I studied I still fell for few off her trick questions. She is quick in replying to questions and the 2 assignments are easy.
She is okay as a prof however, her midterms are way to detailed with endless confusion options. such as "is it a, none of the above, or a d and c but not B." Attending class is mandatory. Make sure to study a week in advance and write very small on your cheat sheet as well as know it well. That will guarantee and A
Stay away from her. Her tests are so horrible. You could copy HER notes word for word on your cheat sheet, find the answer to a question on the midterm/exam, and STILL get it wrong. Do yourself and your GPA a favour, take this course with someone else!
While she does tend to moodle regularly and answers questions responsibly, her tests are ridiculous. Each MC has 6 options, and 90% of the questions are tricky. Even if a question is clearly wrong, it won't be fixed. I deeply regret taking this course with this prof. The material is indeed interesting, and with anyone else, it would've been good.
oh my lord. her tests were sooo tricky like seriously how is that even legal?!!! its goes like this : a, b , c d,all of the above, a and b, c and b, none of the above. On top of that they are extremely and I mean EXTREMELY tricky.
Great professor and a very nice lady. Tests and MC are tricky. To succeed you have to go to all classes and take down her notes word for word, just memorize those and you will do fine. Make sure you read all the figure captions in the textbook, they will be invaluable and some are on tests.
Worst prof of ALL time. Tests are too detailed and she doesn't provide enough information in her notes to help you---even with a cheat sheet! Class is boring. Too much to handle with 4 other courses. This class is horrible...PLEASE AVOID!!!
Explanations in class are clear but notes are very vague and not posted online so you HAVE to be there to fully understand what she's saying. Tests were tricky and questions were lengthly, so read carefully (multiple choice with a-e options!!!) even though we were allowed cheat sheets. Easy to do well if you really study your notes and figures
For the love of your GPA, stay away. Straight A student. Ended up with a B (struggled to get it). There was 1 rating for this course on this site and I decided to ignore it. Tests are ridiculously hard (even though everything is open-book). Stay away..
Absolutely loved her way of teaching. You just copy whatever she writes and make sure to copy figure caption numbers. Textbook is great and explains everything ( if you still don't understand something after the lecture) her test are not tricky at all, but you have to know your material and read carefully. Material is not hard, lots of memo.
Great prof; her lectures are VERY clear. BIO4141 is really interesting. The class is really about understanding molecular biology papers, learning current lab methods and honing presentation skills. This class should be a prereq for all biobiomed students! Tests are all openbook so the emphasis is on understanding, not blind memorization.
She is amazing! I really enjoyed taking this class and would do so again. She is willing to help her students in any way possible. Her grading criteria are very fair and clear. This is one of the best biology classes at York!
Amazing prof! She's there for you! Lectures are super clear & understandable! All you have to do is to read the papers BEFORE class & be ready to listen carefully, take detailed notes about the methods and results of each figure during presentation. Also ask questions & take additional notes from her talks after presentations. Easy A challenging A+
The course is open-booked but you have to make sure you read the articles and know the method and results. It sounds hard but the prof is always there for you. Make sure you arrange an appointment to meet her before your big presentation to discuss about the article since it really help you to know what to talk and what she expects from you.
One of a kind. If York had few more profs like her, York's ranking would be much higher. All profs have the knowledge, but MANY of them DO NOT KNOW how to teach. Dr. Pat DOES KNOW how to teach. Just take the course, put effort by reading the articles before each lecture and you'll end up with a big smile on your face at the end of the semester :)
Worst Biology prof at York. I have loved every biology professor at York. Her lectures move very fast, and her notes are less detailed than what she tests you on. Her tests are very tricky and an extra word or a small condition changes the entire meaning of the question. I usually get high 80's to 90s in biology and I got 60's in her class. beware
Loved her lectures, she goes into detail and explains everything properly, couldn't have a better prof for cell bio!! :)
Dr. Pat is AWESOME! For how detailed this course is, she did her best at covering it all during lectures. Take good notes, then each night after lecture redo the notes while referencing the textbook and making sure to ACTUALLY understand everything. Cheat sheets are allowed; make them detailed (include lists) and don't wait till the last minute!
Even though I got an A, I had to work ridiculously hard for my mark. Always go to class, write detailed notes off the textbook based on her lecture notes, and study the figures. Write as much as you can in the cheat sheet but be able to understand the material. I didn't like her teaching style but the content was interesting.
I would avoid taking this course with Dr. Lakin-Thomas. She does not care about her students and makes lecture excruciatingly painful. Her teaching method is very poor and not engaging whatsoever. Her midterms and exam were more painful than her lectures. She had too many MC and even with a cheat sheet it was very hard. For your sanity, AVOID.
Whoever said that she is a good prof has lied to you. This prof was the most painful one I have experienced at York. Not only are her notes vague and written by hand, her tests are TOO wordy and tricky. You also have to read the textbook ALOT, because her notes did not explain the concepts well. Save your money, and your GPA. AVOID THIS PROF!
Amazing professor! She made me fall in love with cell biology and was my favourite class. I received an A in this class, but worked extremely hard. Taking excellent notes in class and studying regularly is a must to receive an A. Textbook- I used only as a reference and for figures. You must understand everything she teaches, not just memorize.
I contemplate suicide every time I go to one of Dr "Pat's" lectures. She does not upload notes online (no PPT), she writes like Dr. Pietrowski on the overhead doc camera, and she isn't even that nice. In a university where the instructor has many technological devices at their disposal, she chooses to teach as if we were in the 18th century. AVOID!
Do you want your GPA to drop ? Do you want to do bad in a course? Do you want question why you took this course? Then take this course. Honestly, after this course is over all the information disappears from your head. She tries to cram too much information rather than going slower and showing the application of the concepts.
She was not ideal at teaching, her lectures were unbearable. I would cry myself to sleep every night dreading to go to class the next day. However realistically, the course content itself was insane and she did the best she could do to teach everything in the time we had. Tests were very hard and if English isn't your first language, then AVOID!!!!
Prof Thomas doesn't believe in "online lecture notes", instead chooses to WRITE NEXT TO FRICKIN PICTURES ON AN OVERHEAD. Tests are extremely difficult even with a cheat sheet allowed as there is so much content. You have to worship the textbook to fill in the gaps of her vague lectures to do well. Avoid her at all costs.
Like many others, I found Dr Pat's 2021 course difficult, but that's the nature of the course. However, I really enjoyed this class. The class involves a presentation and 2 midterms. You will read around 20 scientific papers and evaluate them, the course teaches you an important skill. Take it! Fair Grading. She's super sweet, and a top professor
Worst prof I've ever had my entire life by a thousand leagues. Uninterested in knowing if you understand the material. Does not post notes, does not record lectures. The notes you ARE able to scramble from her unorganized lectures are not sufficient enough for the test. Have fun spending half your savings on the textbook and learning every word.
she is honestly a kind-hearted, genuine soul that does care for her students. her lectures are unbearable but if you make an effort to actually learn the material using the textbook and ask questions she is always willing to help
Not a good prof by any standard. Horrifically boring and refuses to record lectures or even post notes online despite giving super dense lectures. All exams were MC but often had a-f options with borderline unacceptable ambiguity in the wording. Course is easy but she will have you banging your head against the wall for a full semester 5.5/10
Highly recommend you record lectures and attend class as she does not post her slides. Tests are tricky but if you study and understand specifically what she talks about in class, you will do well. Tests are all MC and some are application based and some purely knowledge-based. Study and put your time and effort in and you will do well.
She's a good prof. Unfortunately, she doesn't post her slides, so you have to type them really fast. I rewrote her notes and added in information from the textbook to help me understand the topics better. The course really got me re-interested in science and made me remember why I love it. It's a lot of self-studying though. Put in WORK!
Dr. Lakin is a wonderful prof! You read 19 papers throughout the course and you have to present one of them to the class. There is only one midterm and the exam is not cumulative! Coming to class is a must since there are quizzes right after every presentation. The articles are not difficult but if you have any questions she is always available!
For it being Dr. Pats first time teaching this course she ran it well! For a final project she gives you 3 options. There was only 1 small textbook required, rest were articles . There are quizzes *every* class but she takes the best 16 out of 20! If you attend all classes, pay attention & take good notes, theres no reason to not do really well.
This class was great and she taught it well! You have a presentation by classmates each class on different scientific papers and then there is a quiz after each one. The quizzes were easy and could easily be found from the information in the journal articles. On the midterm and final you had a choice of which questions to answer.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING professor. I was unsure about the group project at first ~ didn't want to get penalized for my group slacking. Dr. Pat made the group project an individual mark where you only got grades for what you did. If the slides were bad but you didn't do them, you didn't get penalized. LOVE this prof! Don't pass up on the best class ever!
She gives you 2 papers to read every week. Around 50 pages of scientific journals. 1 quiz for each of the papers, in person, 5 mins to answer the 1 question. She literally is not teaching the course, the entire material is taught by us, the students. Her grading on the quizzes is either 100, 70, 50.
This prof makes the course basically impossible to achieve a good grade in. She has the presentation assignment in just to pity you, the quizzes and midterm were god awful.
Professors quizzes use vague questions. You've have to basically word vomit to get all the answers she wants
