The best teacher I have ever had--monumentally inspiring. Lots of work, but well worth the effort. I learned so much, not only about art, but about feminism, history, culture, philosophy, ideology, etc. This is the best class I have ever taken!!
Memorable times were had touring So Cal museums and art exhbits. I wish I could have taken her Art Appreciation class too.
She is sophisticated high class person. Very knowledgeable but make sure you dont get on her bad side. Vague on some things she wants you to do, but she is an excellent speaker. Try her art 100 class instead.
fun and easy.
The Class was very easy, but the art that we saw in the field trips were shaky at best. The art was crap Metal encased trees is not art, it is stupid. The texts that were used are very political, favoring socialism and communism. they are crap too.
Great class and teacher. Not alot of work, NO TESTS! Just a take home final. 2 museum visits and 2 short papers on them. She makes class fun and you will learned alot about art.
If you do all the required work, never miss a class. Easy "A"
This was the most facinating class I've ever taken. Saddleback students are extremely lucky to have this teacher. She opened my eyes to another side of the world.Alot of work, but fun!
not very approchable, seems like she enjoys hearing herself speak. Make sure you have a dictionary for her lectures. Intro. to Art??? She speaks and teaches as if Art was your major and you are in your upper division courses.
Honestly, I didn't learn anything, it was a very boring class. Just go along with everything she says and try to ignore her feminism. Don't ever disagree with her, or she will tear you down.
This class was very easy but the class is very stupid. Don't bother going on any of the feild trips because you can get the info online. You can't disagree with her because she is always right and has an attitude at times.
Summer school class was very easy going. watched a ton of movies. be prepared to analyze and take notes during the movies. Also be prepared to read somewhat complex 100pg books and understand the material. She let us go early too.Enlightning.
boring not exciting not worth taking with this teacher bad communication
she makes you feel really bad about yourslef. I always do very good on essays and she told me that she thinks i am worst writer ever. She grades really hard and unfair.
This lady is unbelievable. Her arrogance and attitude leave you feening for her class to end. The worst mistake I made this semester was taking her class.
this class was so frickin boring and the way she talks is hilarious. i dreaded going to this class. i know im a good writer and she gave me a 10 out of 35 on my essay!! she also told me that i was the worst writer ever. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
She was rude , disrespectful and did not go out of her way at all to help the students. Out of all my classes this was the worst and she made it that way. i do not like her and do not recomend her. You can not make an A in this class. Take someone who will teach you things and respect u as a student
Very enlightening. She is very smart, sophisticated. She is kind to the kind students, but devours rude attitudes. Be prepared to the class and you'll learn a lot. When you write essays, be sure to write what the text book says, not to write your feelings.
She is very nice and very clear in her lectures. Only three essays for the entire semester. No final and no quizes. You do have to go visit two museums up North for two of the papers. She's a really easy and helpful teacher. She'll look over your papers before so you'll get an A! Great Teacher!
This ended up being more of an english class than an art class. Dr. Levin can be moody and unclear in her direction of the class. Reminiscent of 7th grade english teacher.

Another case for why tenure sh/be revoked. MOODY & bizarre. Class was easy tho. Just expect your first essay to be slammed - she wants all touchy/feely stuff in it. So forget the fact & emote your way to an A!
she is really into art so she expects you to be an art major..well guess what some of us are taking it to fill general ed. There is only 2 essays and a final so do well or you wont pass. Plus the final is 65% of your grade but it really wasnt that hard. This lady thinks she is really smart so watch out. o yeah and she is artsy fartsy snoby
Listen to what she is saying and use it on your essays. Ask questions often, as she loves what she does. Just because art is open to interpretation, do not think that you can debate certain things with her. Interpretation is fine, just don't be one of those people that thinks he/she is smarter than the Professor. She's called Dr. Levin for a reason
Ask a ton of questions. Become her friend. She will tell you what's on the test you just have to listen. The movies are great. That's all you do is watch movies and go to exhibits.
Has industry experience as a curator at the Getty Museum; comes from a perspective of a historian and not an artist. This is not an art class; it's taught more as a "way of seeing art" class. The books used were up to date and highly recommended. The trips the class took were informational and the subject matter was more modern. She keeps her class at a professional distance. She is very formal and will not "hold your hand" as you take the class. Definitely a college professor.
shes very boring and has a very superior attitude with her students. it could be a good class but shes wack and makes it boring. also very rude.
Horrible, worst professor I had aat saddleback or anywhere else for that matter
I took her class and it was horrible. She missed the first AND last days of class, (and a class in between) she TAUGHT us nothing but rather relied solely on the use of semi-interesting art history videos. Pompous attitude as well!
She is knowledgeable about the subject but condescending and rude. Her teaching style is really bland. Some of the art theory concepts were really hard to understand and everyone pretty much failed the first paper. I love modern art, but I dropped the class because I couldnt bear listening to her for 3 hours straight.
This teacher's holier-than-thou attitude was an immediate turn-off for myself as well as most of the class. She demands a class discussion, yet manages to insult the opinion of everyone that has the courage to speak out. Not to mention she doesn't even teach: she simply puts on these horrible British videos and leaves the room until class is done.
BORING CLASS!! All we did was read from textbook and go on a couple field trips--all boring!
She is a terrible teacher. She missed the first day of class, then expected everyone to read over 100 pages by the next week. She tries to teach about photography, but she is an art major, and doesn't know what she's talking about. She's extremely boring, and everything revolves around art. She should not be teaching the history of photography!
BORING BORING BORING
This teacher is not really that great. She thinks she knows everything about Art but really she knows less than my Dad. She doesn't seem interested in teaching or her students. At the end of the semester you watch films which I was excited about. She picked the most pedestrian films to show that were not very artistic. Bad teacher.
Not sure what these others are talking about as she is a very fair, helpful, and interested teacher. I can only think they wanted something for nothing. To get a good grade in any clas you have to put in some effort. Show some interest and effort and you will do just fine. She's really nice! I highly recommend her/great class. (Summer '08 student)
"Dr" Levin is terrible. I do not recommend her class. She is very boring and grades very unfairly. She argued with a lot of people in my class which was very unprofessional. I am majoring in Art History and her art history class was absolutely useless. Avoid her class!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROF. LEVIN. Myself and 3 other people dropped her class after the 2day...VERY BROING..and doesn't give you enough time to take notes...Book is mandatory and it's $107 .. she is all about Talking the art language, and expects you to know it...for an art class there is TOO Much reading and the too many tests on the book.
bad teachers forced my class to go to field trips in LA on the weekend, i got 110% on the mid term but failed the final some how?! ya it was ridiculous... and the essay was supposed to be my interpretation of a certain artist's work... i guess i don't appreciate art very well?****s weak dude
By far the most imperesonal, least helpful, uncaring teacher. Thinks very highly of herself & little of you, reminds you of her PHD. Says everyone should be open to free interpertation in the class but is really criticizing. Attended all classes and the inconvenient fieldtrips all reading & sat in front, to be told im "ignorant". Don't take!
Dr. Levin is different but I didn't find her to be rude. Overall, I enjoyed the class because I learned a lot about art and was introduced to some new perspectives. The rating isn't always about the professor but about your attitude toward learning. I think some of you should rate your own effort before blasting on the professors.
Levin and this class is not that bad. No work except for midterm and final. AND the final is a take-home essay. Attend every class, listen to how she views art, analyze the art in that way in the essays. super easy. replaces 2 class meetings w field trips. class never went the whole 3 hours that it was supposed to. dont even need to participate.
The most arrogant, snobbish teacher I've ever had; the textbooks don't help either, usually you'll have to open up a dictionary for every 5th or 10th word. If you want/need to take Art 20 register for Bob Rickerson's class; he's a laid back surfer and getting an A in his class is a breathe. Remember her ratings are low for a reason!
Awful experience. Demands discussion about topics most of the class does not understand. Completely condescends students viewpoints and does NOT help students understand AT ALL. Missed many classes and was over an hour late to one of the mandatory field trips. I'd suggest finding another professor.
Very boring classes. First semester is reading a book that is pretty hard to understand, second semester is watching videso that you can view online at home. Only points are midterm, final, and museum trips. Read the chapters and participate in class, you should be fine. If you happen to miss class several weeks in a row though, you should be fine.
She really wants students to participate but has trouble eliciting discussion. The book is hard for many to understand so they don't like it. Her passion for the art is obvious. It's not an easy topic and requires some thought on the students' part. Which makes it harder when you are working and taking classes too.
The class is boring, with slideshows of art all class period every class period, but worst of all was the professor. She picked favorites and chose to fail students who she did not like. I attended every class got an F then with reminding her of her favoritism for students she put my grade to a C. she is unfair. Do not take her! you wil regret it.
Save yourself, do not take art with this professor, she is the worst teacher I have ever had through all my years of schooling. She wants to fail you and will use her power as a professor to fail you regardless of your work or attendance. She literally fails you just because she doesnt like you. She should not be a professor at all!
The concepts require thought, she will not spoonfeed them to you. Class participation is the key!
Im currently taking both her art 20 and 28 classes and I completely regret taking them. She stresses class discussion but usually spend the entire time talking and paraphrasing everything she says. Dont even try giving your opinion she will shut it down immediately. I can honestly say I haven't really gained any knowledge in taking her classes.
DO NOT take this class with this professor. She has no interest whatsoever in her students, and she has this attitude that she is always right, even though art is supposed to be your own interpretation.
Comfortable movie theatre seats in the room. Way too easy to sleep in class unless you sit in the front.
Your opinion won't matter much if it is different from hers. It was a perfect class to take on my busy schedule, there were no homework besides the take home mid term. Not my favorite class.
such a tedious class, its really hard to be interested in listening to her talk about photos for 3 hours. the book we read makes no sense unless she explains it. She's nice, but the class is just waaaay to boring
boring boring boring. she would talk for a little, then put on old movies. took two field trips which were required (worth points) but an easy A and she let us out early most of the time
GREAT! At the beginning of the semester is a lot of HW because she wants you to pay attention to her teachings, she is very helpful, and understanding. I love her class!
very intriguing. knows her subject well. i personally enjoyed the films we watched in class and the reading. takes a different approach to feminine art, one that i never considered or even thought about. field trips were great and learned a lot. Definitely recommend this class without a doubt. Professor Levin is awesome!
EASY A! if you can;t get an A in this class then idk what's wrong with you!! sure she's not the nicest person but getting an A in this class didn't require too much effort! i didnt even ever study!
Mrs. Levin is a very proper lady, she has high standards for behavior but is a really easy teacher, I got an A no problem I didn't once open the book or study, the field trips were fun and I learned some stuff but it did get boring sometimes. overall it was a pretty good class.
Easy to get an A in this class, didn't participate in discussion either. First half of the semester is really boring, but second half you'll be watching a lot of movies. ATTEND the field trips, it will help your grade. Reiterate what she says in lectures for your essays and you'll be fine.
I'm very happy with the way Professor Levin teaches art history. Her approach is not memorizing slides, but rather understanding the art movements in their historic context. Modern art is a hard subject to comprehend, but she explains it well. Lots of movies and readings, but I made an A without doing most of them. I'm happy I took her class.
She is really rude if you have any questions. She is not helpful at all. She definitely plays favorites. Her class is easy, just make sure you attend because that will not only help you on exams but also in discussions. If you have the opportunity to take it with another professor, do that.
If you come to class, pay attention, go to the museums and read the book there is no reason to not pass. She is misunderstood. I found her to be very caring, very supportive and willing to help. If you don't care about school you can't expect your professors to care about you. Take her if you are a serious student and you will love the course.
Class is SO boring, I am very into art but this class was not fun or interesting at all. Everything is easy, it just is so monotone and uninteresting. Musuem papers are easy, I never went either time but I got 100% just from the things I saw on the musuem websites.
I had her class spring '12. I'll start by saying she has a hell of a commute - from LA. Anyways, her class is what you make of it. If you show up to be a wallflower you will be bored - if you can speak and participate you will be fine. She is fair, loves the subject, and her assignments and instructions are clear (something I increasingly miss)
this class sucks!!! the teachers so boring and no ones captivated by the teacher so any time she asks a question no one raises there hands and only the same people answer which we all know that gets old fast! i took this class up till the 11th wk till the semister ended beause she said anyone that gotta D on the midterm wouldn't pass.
This class is really interesting! I highly recommend taking Dr. Levin's class. she pushes her students to think critically and expand their knowledge. its not an easy A but if you partiicpate, do the work, and study you will do just fine.
teacher is very complicated and rude. Not clear what so ever. Not a fun class to take. She is confusing when it comes to midterms and finals, Do not take
NEVER TAKE THIS TEACHER SHE BARELY SHOWS UP AND WHEN SHE DOES SHE IS RUDE AND NOT HELPFUL
Teacher is particularly rude, extremely boring and barely shows up. Easy A but i didn't learn anything remotely useful or interesting from this class. Plays movies literally every day and is very unclear with instructions for assignments. Avoid her if possible
There is a lot of work online, but it's due able. You go to a museum twice on your own and write a three page paper on it. Midterm and Final were easy as long as you use the study guide she gives you. The book is needed!
Class is simplistic yet interesting. For some it may seem like a lot of work. The videos are very helpful in conjunction with the textbook. Overall a very compassionate teacher. Kept up with the class even when very (very very) busy. Always answers emails. Even a simple email she acknowledges. No extra credit so must score well. Wonderful teacher.
A very interesting class. Have great textbook with videos to accompany the text. Engaging discussion - teacher writes thoughtful comments. Always answers her emails. Might be a lot of work for some. You must do well on your quizzes b/c there is no extra credit. She really pays attention to your work and is also an educated, compassionate teacher.
Overall, I was really interested in art, but I faked my way through this. I got a very pretentious vibe from her, even through online. I would receive 10/15 on discussions and get a comment like "you fully understand, needs to be more developed." Had to work really hard to get an A because apparently art isnt subject to opinion unless its hers.
Don't take this class online, or ever. Teacher's due dates are confusing and change depending on where you look for the information. Responses to student questions are so rude that students stop asking, and learning through others then becomes obsolete. No feedback to final exam essay questions. Not worth time.
Took it online. The lectures are somewhat interesting, but will definitely put you to sleep. I will never take a class from her again. I am a straight A student and had to work harder in this class than any other class. I barely got a B. Her exams are not relevant to the lectures. Best of luck to anyone who takes this class.
The only real lectures are video adaptations of the assigned book. Not very helpful if you don't already have a deep understanding of art history. Take home midterm and final are easy but the weekly assignments are more like essays than discussion posts. Gives more negative feedback than positive and a harsh grader.
Two museum essays, She expects almost an essay for the discussion board every week. Accepts late work which is nice. But the videos are really long. Second half of the semester you can Google the answers to the quizzes and get 100% without watching the videos. Exams are two essays and a quick quiz. Essays on a specific painting. So take notes.
I took her for an 8 week online course. She required two museum visits, both with a four page essay. I take online classes because I don't have time to go to class. The closest museum we could visit is in Long Beach, the next closest is LA. I think that is ridiculous for an 8 week ONLINE course. She also grades based off her opinion.
I didn't know anything about Art when I started the class but I learned a lot and really enjoyed the class! She expects college level work and will give good feedback to help you succeed. I would definitely have her as a teacher again.
It's not a difficult class, nor is she a difficult teacher. She may seem shortcold in her emails or essay feedback, but I doubt she means to come off that way. If you do the work, you'll get a good grade. I had trouble getting to the museums on her list, so she was nice enough to find one closer to me to go to and still gave me full credit.
She's great; 2 discussion posts due each week, make sure you provide a lot of examples in your analysis to get full credit. Quizzes are super easy if you take notes on the week's material; you can also look up the answers sometimes. 2 museum papers (4 pgs)- I think she gives full credit just if you do it. Exam study guides help a lot for the tests!
At first, I felt uneasy when she graded my work, but as the class progressed and I was able to realize that she wants exactly what she asks for in discussion board posts, then I got the hang of it. She loves lots and lots of examples specifically from your reading and videos. Truthfully, I loved this class and her as the professor.
Very easy A! Just read the book and participate in the discussions and make sure to bring in specific examples from the book to truly show you read it. There are two papers where you have to visit a museum and talk about the art, but it was a fun chance to go see LACMA and another great museum I took my friends and made a day out of it.
Worst teacher I have had in my undergrad years. I was open minded about this Art history class and was excited. NEVER again will I take an art history class. She has made me dislike anything about art. Worst professor in California.
Warning, avoid this Professor at all costs! Very rude! Changes the day that the final is due to an earlier day and when you ask questions about anything she basically calls you an idiot. Quote "WOW are you out of the loop?" What kind of teacher says that when someone just asks a question. And that's just one short example out of many.
If you're not so hot with your writing or you don't like to write, then do not take this class. Participation is centered around submitting 2 ESSAYS a week, and then replying to four other essays... The final assignment is a 6-pg museum paper, exam is three big essays and one little quiz. The videos will put you to sleep. I'd seriously reconsider.
Professor Levin is kind and understanding. If you have and issue with an assignment, email her before it's due and she'll extend the due date. Weekly discussion boards (be thorough, she grades these pretty tough) and 10 question m/c quizzes. Two museum trips on your own time followed by 4-page papers (easy- I got 100% on both). Would recommend!!
I took this class for my gen-ed. Two lessons per week, each lesson has 3-5 videos 10min-3hours long each. Then you must write an "essay" style (3-5 paragraphs) discussion post for each, then reply to 2 other students responses in each. Two museum papers, fairly easy, two weekly quizzes and a midterm and a final. Too much work for a 3 unit class.
She grades hard on the discussion boards and there is over 2 hours of videos per week for the online class. There are two lessons per week and 2 quizzes every week.
The work load for this class is pretty heavy for 3 units. You have to write 2 essays and 4 responses each week, plus other various assignments (including two museum papers). It's an art appreciation class, but she bases it around her own interpretations of the art. She's not very understanding when she changes dates. Quote, "Aren't you oblivious?"
She is very strict and grade the discussion board very hard. However, she gives good feedback on the essay discussion board so you can she what you did wrong. She can come off that way on her discussion board comment so that she can help us earn 15/15 points on the essay. Remember to read her feedback and it help us understand what she want .
30 years in the Saddleback College!!!! Just like student's GPA, the accumulated 2.7 rating says it all. Most of the students will not benefit from this instructor. It maybe good for students who like to write essays.
Usually with art classes that non art majors take, you'd assume the teacher would grade you based on effort and not actual content. She grades all on content so if you don't understand the difficult material, you're screwed. Way too many videos to watch and would definitely take something else for art credit.
I was surprised that she had so many negative reviews. In all fairness, she may come off as passive aggressive at times, but I do not blame her for many students do not reference the syllabus or required material. She truly cares about the student's ability to succeed and will give constructive criticism and/or extend the due date.
Sometimes it felt like there was a lot of work. Expect to spend 4 or more hours a week, but if you do it and follow instructions it an easy A. She is extremely understanding and gave me an extension on a paper when I needed it. Gives good feedback and always replies to emails.
I would not have expected this class to be so difficult. This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken and I just took it for art credit. She is a very hard grader on everything even if you try your best. She is kind of rude when you ask for feedback as well which makes things more difficult. Would recommend another course.
There is a lot of material but if you look at what she wants, youll get a good grade. She communicates really quickly and clearly what she wants and tries to make classical art interesting.
Hardest A I've ever worked for. If you are not a strong writer I'd advise not taking this class. Maybe the class would of been different if I had taken it in a regular semester as opposed to a condensed semester.
Dont waste your time. She is so rude. She expects you to understand and know everything about art history, and talk about in every discussion board... although it was never taught. She also makes you watch several videos throughout the week. So happy to take this class off my schedule, because the stuff that she does teach is not useful.
Took it for easy art credits, ended up being the hardest class Ive ever taken. The term paper for this class is more than my actual important classes which is bs. Basically have to watch two hours worth of boring videos and write two essays every week. Ridiculous amount of work for the class youre taking. Avoid at all costs
DO NOT TAKE!!! There is a ridiculous amount of work for this class. Took this course online and she gives two 3 paragraph discussions each week + 2 quizzes. Gave the midterm Thanksgiving week. Extremely tough grader! Her due dates are wrong and inconsistent on each page of directions. If you must take good luck!
This class is not an easy A you always have to stay on track and make sure you turn everything in. There's a lot of videos and reading you need to do throughout the course. She's very understanding and will accept late work if you communicate with her. She also post grades and replies to emails quickly, which was something I really liked.
I took this class as a psychology major with a big interest in art. The material is interesting for the most part, but might be difficult to meet the assignment requirements unless you are really motivated to think on art. She is looking for honest work, and a critical eye. You will have to write a lot, especially for the semester project.
She is never pleased with anything and she gives out unrealistic expectations for discussion boards. Also she doesnt update her field trip papers with the semester so get ready to drive to museums that are closed for the season.
She doesnt seem as a happy person or teacher. Final paper requires 2 museums visiting and 8 pages. After my hours work, she even did not post my final paper grade, b/c she took off class off canvas already. Only a couple of days after paper due day?! What a joke?! In short, Unpleasant class, stupid material and awful teacher.
Ridiculously unattainable expectations for an art appreciation class. Expect 2 essays per week and expect to be graded extremely (unnecessarily) hard on these. I liked the content but the course work and unrealistic expectations made me drop the class. It's way too much work for an art class, in my opinion. Do not take if you can help it!!!
I took this class online and it was a first 8 weeks class. It crammed a 16 week class into 8 weeks. (twice the work in half the time). Dr Levin is a mediocre teacher in my opinion because she grades where it's almost impossible to get an A. She expects all students to be passionate about art and understand every term better than Da Vinci himself.
She marks down on EVERYTHING. You numbered your answers, marked down, didn't include the name of the student in your reply, marked down. She's not flexible on anything either. During COVID, our wifi is limited (i live in a remote area with bad towers), wifi went out in midterm, no retake allowed. Her expectations are too high for a 3 unit class.
Art is based on perspective. This professor grades on her perspective only. Unless you describe a painting exactly how SHE sees it you don't get good grades. The lectures and videos do not give you direct answers to the questions you ask and neither does the book.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. This professor expects way too much from each assignment and picks at every single thing. She is also very petty when she thinks you're not putting in enough work. I changed the grading to P/NP since I knew I wouldn't get an A unless I only focused on this class. Overall terrible just don't do it!
I did this class via a full semester online format. Prof Levin for me was great. You reach out, she responds. You ask for help and guidance, you get it. Prof Levin does push you. You do have some papers to write, but if you get what she's looking for, you'll pass. If you don't get it, reach out, then she'll guide you, so you can pass.
Professor Levin should not be teaching entry level Art classes. This class was the hardest college course I have taken as a nursing major so far and it is entry level history of photography that I took as a 2 unit elective. She is rude in her grading, expects you to be a God at breaking down artistic functions. Be prepared to write like hell, AVOID
