sharpest dresser in Commerce; a bit hard to follow in lecture but great stories
Great prof!
great prof & great person. has kept her body tight!

teaches easy materials but the exams r hard, would not want to take her again

Stuff ain't easy... but marked pretty loosely for the midterm...
oversimplified examples that do not exemplify concepts

over-simplified lectures
Can't comment on lectures, but easy marker.

Really cute. Gyrates her hips all the time while smiling. Hmmmmmm.
Such a nice teacher
What a pleasant change after Lockwood! Nice Club Monaco clothes, good teaching, nice class atmosphere. It won't make you love accounting, but will certainly make you forget about Don Lockwood's loathable classes!
Very nice teacher who tries really hard. Sometimes hard to understand because she uses a lot of colloquialisms.
Go Club M!
Overall good teacher. Sometimes loses many people during lectures. She can lose her stories though, kinda dumb i think. I can see her being hot 20 years ago, but come on man!!! She's like a grandmother. Don't look at her gyrating her hips goddammit!!
This is the teacher you want, basically feeds you the exam questions. Joke lectures, nice and light.
Good prof, super nice. The exam is pretty much from her notes. Don't bother reading the textbook. She'll give you marks for writing something on the exam, so at least write the formula down, and you'll get at least in the 60s.
Wicked prof. Gets to the point. Explains well. Awsome stories
Stories are funny... Strangely hot in soccer-mom kind of way:) Material not always so clear. Processes for problem solving can change without so much of an explanation. Tricky.
GREAT prof! Her stories are super interesting (most importantly, relevant) to the material being taught. She makes sure everybody in class understands before moving onto next topic. Very organized.
shes awesome! very helpful and sympathetic... super nice too! cares about students as people
Good.
Very good prof. Explains matter in a clear way, welcomes questions, and answers them well. The stories are interesting and funny, and they definitely arouse interest. Available and helpful during office hours. She shows interest and care for students.
this is a prof who actually knows her stuffs and try to explain them in the most reasonable manner; however, the exams are LONG, don't expect to finish.....
Very friendly prof but tests are quite long and quite difficult
Patti! Very polite, very helpful, interesting class. Very bad term assignments and long midterms but they are made by course coordinator. Her grading is stupid, just random 1 and 2 all over ur paper and no explanation for anything at all. Go Patti!

terrible
Only had Patti half a semester because de Rooy threw a spaz and got suspended... But she's excellent, a very clear and conscise lecturer. Great in-class examples and, like someone else said, weirld hot in the soccer-mom sense.
horrible
Course material easy - class avg = 76%. Teaches clearly, and gives you a great feeling that it's impossible to teach this course badly :p
great teached makes a boring class interesting, good stories
Awesome! Very caring, helpful, and most importantly, knows how to present material in a way that is GREAT for learning and easy to understand. Exams killed me, but accounting is not my strong point. Great storytelling, and good, clear notes. Fast email replies, too... highly recommended!
clear teaching style, though can be somewhat repetitive. textbook was useless, i only studied from patti's notes. the exams are very hard, i knew my stuff but still very difficult. class avg=71%
very organized and nice! she makes you interested in the material and explains everything very well but exams and assignments are killer!
Accounting is boring, but Patti makes it as good as is possible given the subject. Assignments are random, but don't count for much. Explain yourself on exams (even if you don't know the answer) and she'll give generous credit.
Great prof! Notes and lectures are always clear and concise. Generous marker!

Very nice professer! The midterms are not very hard =D
Her notes are great! i think one of the best out of all the other professors; its concise and def. to the point. although she's an accountant, she's got a very chic urban style : ) my kind of person! she's a good prof, but exams are NOT easy!! the person who gave the first rating can go to hell.
Way to over-rated! If she took more time to explain and illustrate with more examples instead of merely filling in the blanks on her overly-simplified lecture notes during lectures, her efforts would have been put to some use. Poor t.a.'s as well. Thank God for the excellent text book.

Midterms were easy but final was waaay too long. she seems like a good lecturer but i just cant concentrate in class so i stopped going. the textbook is good but the chapters are too long so I stopped reading it. The only thing I did do in this course was reading the lyryx notes and doing the lyryx assignments and I still ended up with an A.
I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS PROF IS GIVEN 3.8 FOR EASINESS. WITH NO ACCOUNTING BACKGROUND, I FOUND THIS CLASS THE HARDEST THING EVER. SHE SOMETIMES EXPLAINS, BUT MOST OF THE TIME WE ARE JUST FILLING IN NUMBERS IN THE NOTES WITHOUT KNOWING WHY. SHE SEEMS NICE AND ALL, BUT DUDE THE EXAMS/FINALS WILL KILL YOU. SHE IS HARD. THE EXAMS ARE HARD.
she's very clear and good at explaining, but her notes need to be more than just examples. When I went over them, i couldn't remember how she got certain figures. The txtbk is also so unhelpful
Thanks for showing me how drab accounting really is and turning me away from this career. Things generally happen for the better in the long run.
Exams=DIE IF YOU DON'T DO/UNDERSTAND HW. If you have trouble with assignments, TAs are available in Angus basement. It will help tons. Notes don't seem helpful, but they are. Study and compare hw and notes, and get help from TAs and you'll do well. Her stories are entertaining and she's quite clear. Texbook is useless. Warning: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
Good at what she does. i personally don't care for financial accounting, but she knows her stuff, tells relevant stories, and tests the material very well. Good class to be in!
not a good teacher, not good in explaining the material. i didnt understand anything.
She's nice. BUT her teaching style is hard to understand. You take notes not knowing what they are for. She doesn't explain what she writes down. Midterm was ridiculously hard. She's boring as hell. Haven't learned a thing from her. Get De Rooy instead. At least he makes you do the work. Oh yea. and she's biased too
Makes accounting learnable, though her stories don't really have anything to do with the subject matter
Great prof!!! Extremely clear and helpful! Strongly recommonded
Hwk is hard bec lack of prep. I had no accting bkgrd but thought she explained concepts well. textbook is useless and hard. Exams not that bad
That hand motion she always does is really weird (watch it and TELL me it doesn't look like something awfully wrong...) As a prof, she's okay. Nothing spectacular, but I'd say better than all the alternatives. Probably better for MA than FA. The methods she teaches are kind of harder though - just do it like the book says to do it and you'll be ok
Good teacher. For the sake of all your wallets, DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!! You never use it once, she gives you a note packet that you fill out during classes and that's all you need. She almost implies that you don't even need to do any of the readings.
Really helpful course note, really nice prof. I recommand her to all the Bcom students,ha!
I wasn't sure about accounting, but after Patti, I learned to love it. Her explanations are very well done, and her notes package is the most useful I've ever had. The quizzes and assignments always seemed to catch people off guard, but she preps the class really well for both exams. Would take any class again with her in a second.
She teaches well with her notes. I just studied her notes and nothing else. She gave a lot of examples and cases so we can understand it more easily. I like Scott better than her because she tends to make classes a little bit dry and it is not interactive enough.
Good lecturer with interesting stories and teaching methods. However, may not be particularly dedicated to students.
Great prof! Accounting is something that I will struggle with forever but Mallia definitely made it bearable. She has great anecdotes and stories of her experiences auditing which makes the class a lot more interesting.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, she cares about you and your grades. She is VERY HELPFUl she always replies to emails and she is probably the best overall prof I've had here. LASTLY but MOST IMPORTANTLY....if you buy her notes package ($6 and yea its mandatory) and you listen in class and take good notes, then you can get an A+ very comfortably WITHOUT READIN
very helpful teacher, textbook is not really used much (just for clarification), her notes package is the most helpful thing, it is straight forward, she tells you exactly what you need to know, prepares you very well for exams, seems like she really cares about student learning, definitely take her!
Excellent prof! Crystal clear presentation style delivers exactly what you need to know. If you like the Sarah Palin accent take her class. If not, take her class.
Patti is awesome! She is a fantastic prof, super helpful, and makes class easy to go to. One of the nicest profs and most accessible i've had. Easy on the eyes ;)
great teacher, notes package tells you everything you need to know, textbook is a waste of money dont buy it, explains things in steps so u understand, definitely take her
GREAT PROF!! Her lectures are super clear and explain how to do all the problems step by step. If you actively listen and take note of what she says you will definately do well. Very helpful during office hours.
Her notes are really helpful! She teaches in a way that makes it easy for students to understand accounting.
Great prof. very helpful. sometimes the TA marked wrongly but she was willing to add marks for students if u approach her. it is easy especially for the people who took accounting before.
Mallia is the best prof ever in sauder..she's extremely nice..explain stuff very well and i like her course package..it's extremely helpful
Patty is just simply amazing! Accounting is hard, no doubt, but thanks to her I was able to enjoy the class. She answers emails practically in an instant, where I would usually ask her 5+ questions at once and yet she is still very willing to answer my infinite questions and emails. Loved her :)
One word, BOSS!
great style but goes by material really fast and the notes do not match up with the assessments or the midterms arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
best prof ive had so far, hands down. textbook is virtually useless; just go to class!!! she explains everything very well, and uses quirky example. I think im in love.
She is a really good prof. Ready to help out and clarify questions as and when they arise.
She teaches so well even a caveman could learn how to depreciate bond premiums under her tutelage. A+!
Awesome professor. Best professor I've had this year by far. She's funny, engaging, and does her best to make a dull subject interesting. First midterm is hard but if you go to class and keep up with the material you will be fine... LOVE HER, and she's a babe too :)
She was a great professor, but there are a few things that students must know at the beginning of COMM 293 with Prof. Mallia. Reading through her notes will not be enough to get you through this course. With the online exams, if you make one small mistake, it might cost you a lot, so study every minute detail.
Very good professor, she knows her topics very well and cares a lot for the success of her students. Always available to help outside lecture times as well
best option to pass accounting 293
Best prof I had in first year. Very very funny, tells amazing stories in class, still gets down to business and gets the job done. Easy to understand, easy to follow, notes on the board make absolute sense. always attend class!! ask her for help at her office hours, shes wonderful!!!!
<3 absolutely the best prof ever! Funny, tells great stories, extremely helpful, easy to talk to, and makes accounting FUN!
She is not very helpful. Her notes are okay. But you need to spend lots of time studying and doing questions. She is difficult to work with. She does not always reply her emails.
I studied super hard for her midterms and only got 67%. Her notes are hella easy but her midterms don't even match up. I used to think she was a good teacher but honestly, she screwed me over for all the Assessments and Midterms which are 10x harder than her notes.
Excellent prof! Makes me love accounting. Choose her for COMM 294. You will learn tons and you will be glad you chose her!
I have had her for 2 years now and she is honestly the best prof I've had!! Take her for 293 or 294 and she'll make you love accounting
LOVE THIS PROFESSOR, she rocks my world even though I don't want to go into accounting. Her examples are super helpful, shes so real and relatable, and tells awesome stories. Choose Mallia for your junior accounting!!! <3 so much love for this lady.
Organized notes.Making every point clear. Read her notes and attend class will be sufficient to get a good grade.
What a beautiful angel. I have been in a trance ever since the course began. Her sweet smile and effortless teaching style makes my heart skip beats frequently. Accounting has become my favourite class because I know every time I sit down in that lecture hall I will get a chance to hear the most angelic professor in the world speak.
She is a great professor! The course is at a fast pace, but she is going through the material effortlessly. If you listen to her, she will direct you through exactly what you need to know. There is also something VERY unique about her that is very hard to describe.
She is a doll. This is the one class that I am sorry is going to end. The classes are easy to attend because she is always in a good mood. Extremely easy to talk to if you have questions. Great view, too!
before takin her course i didn know anything about accounting, and after takin it, i still have no knowledge of accounting. Her notes are irrelevant to the assessments and exams. there are so many new things that you face in assessments and exams that were not discussed in her notes. she does not engage you with the textbook and it's no good.
Great prof, makes you more interested about accounting and constantly tells interesting stories. Notes are easy to understand but examples are way too easy in comparison to all her assessments and exams.
Patricia is an accounting angel, such a sweetheart who genuinely cares about her students. Responds to emails at lightning speed. Notes are simple and straight forward but her assessments and exams are harder because they tend to test your knowledge of actual concepts. Study hard, FA isn't easy to do well in. Textbook is useless.
Her notes are all u need to study. ATTEND HER CLASS and u won't need to study much for midterm and finals. textbook is useless in comparison. Very clear and make accounting easy to understand. Great accounting prof!
Good prof if you work well with examples. If you think on a more conceptual level you'll struggle to understand her notes. Very helpful when you ask her in person but not overly engaging as a lecturer. Classes have iClicker marks - make sure you go, and sit in the front row so that you don't fall asleep.
Patricia is the best. You do not need the textbook, her notes are extremely clear and cover everything you need to know for the exams. She goes out of her way to make time for her students and is very quick at replying to emails and addressing issues. Enthusiastic and hilarious with intriguing analogies, you will never be bored with her teaching.
Patty is my accounting angel. She is one of the best profs I've ever had. Her lectures are crystal clear, don't buy the textbook. Go to class, take notes and study hard. Her exams are not easy but she provides students with everything they need to do well. "The best teachers are those that show you where to look but don't tell you what to see."
One of those profs and classes that you will take with you forever. I am graduating this year and in thinking back on my education, realized just how valuable her course and delivery were. It is a hard course, but she is extremely fair and pushes you to learn. Draws people to her and makes them feel special.
I don't understand why people are telling you not to buy the textbook, maybe it's because of the McGraw-hill connect Labs that we have to purchase which comes with an e-textbook? But the content in the textbook are still useful. Attend class, Do labs, study hard. Format that she teaches in class *sometimes* don't align with the textbook.
Patti goes too fast sometimes in class and although her notes are great, she sometimes doesn't explain where numbers come from. I also emailed her to ask a very valid question and she was VERY rude back to me in her email. I think she's great if you get FA but not good for those who it doesn't come that easily to.
She is not very helpful at all. She does not explain where she gets those numbers. During class, she will go extremely fast.
Good teacher and very kind soul! She provided students with clear notes although she did not always seem adequately prepared for class. Concepts could be extremely confusing in the beginning, and for that reason I would highly suggest reading the textbook as it clarifies some things that she could not possibly over in 3 hours of lecture per week.
She tries very hard to explain the VERY extensive curriculum through her detailed notes that primarily are numerical examples of the concepts she will verbally describe. Attending class is a MUST! Very easy to get lost if you skip a class, stop paying attention as the course moves extremely fast for those who have no accounting background.
I love this professor. She makes accounting interesting and has a very kind soul. She does her best to help students and replies very quickly to emails. One of my best professors so far.
Patricia is very nice and kind and she makes accounting more interesting when possible. Exams were fair but extremely inconvenient online. Highly recommended as an accounting prof!
Great prof, very kind and always replies to email and help fast. Sometimes materials taught can be very confusing though. Tests are fair and are easy to study with online examples.
Patricia went waaaayyy too fast in lecture so it was impossible to grasp any of the concepts. I had to focus more on writing down how to do the problem, then actually listen to what she was saying
The class is now formatted like an online class, with videos to be done before class (that are dry and boring) and examples during class, that she goes way too fast over, so there is no clarity! She seems nice, but the new format of the class is terrible, I'm paying UBC for inclass lectures not online videos!
terrible prof. Hard test
Since converting to an online class, comm 293 has been miserable. The online wiley system is poorly structured, lectures are incredibly boring and everyone taking 293 this year is just incredibly unlucky.
Mallia is definitely a professor that cares about her students. Watch the videos, and complete the in-class exercises, and you will be find for the midterm final.
Seems like a good person, but honestly the new video system is just terrible. She expects students to know everything just by watching the videos. She says that the in-class lectures are completely optional and the videos are essential, but from personal experience, by just doing the videos at home, you'll have a miserable time doing midterm.
Watch the videos and make sure you understand the basic concept. Practice the Wiley Assignments and the In class problems. Practice the mock midterms and finals. If you do all this, you should be fine!
Good prof, lectures were online, so class time was used for big 'tutorials'. Very helpful.
Since converting the course to have a great deal of online material, it's gone to hell. As a few others have pointed out, the mandatory videos posted are very dry and her lisp theems even more notithable in the videoth. Lectures are "non-mandatory" though they're actually quite important in order to do well. Should revert to strictly in-class.
It's a very challenging course coming from a none accounting background. If you do not get the content from the beginning then it would be hard for you to catch up. Mallia is a great prof as she is very encouraging and tries to help out her students, but her lectures may sometimes be dry like the subject itself. She provides lots of resources too.
Patricia is uses her own condensed course package, so you don't need to read the textbook, and she has her own video tutorial which helps you understand better if you don't get sth in class. And she is extremely encouraging and supportive, very friendly in her office hour! Exam is fair. Undeniable, class is sort of boring, but it is acceptable.
There are two types of students, those who like her and those who does not. I really enjoyed her lectures because she was always straightforward. Her lectures are a little rushed but the video lectures are definitely helpful. I recommend watching her video lectures before exams. She's definitely a prof I like.
Patricia is the best professor I've ever had. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She is always available for office hours and responds to emails quickly. She has her own note package accompanied by videos, which is basically what the exam is based on.
Professor Mallia definitely knows her stuff. Its beginner accounting and she has to go slow for beginners so for accounting veterans it will seem dry. LUCKILY, she posts videos of lecture summaries. I rarely attended class and "marathoned" the videos and got high 80s in both midterm and final. I think she is underappreciated.
