Though she mised 3o% of classes the term I had her, she was an excellent prof.
great lecturer but hard marker, not a nice person to boot!
Her classes can be a lot of fun, will improve your acedemic writing skills.

very hard teacher, is not willing to accept students ideas. NOT HELPFUL. very difficult as a first level course teacher
prof is vey difficult. as a first level teacher, she is very challenging, not open to suggestions or student ideas. needs to be more like a helpful teacher and less demanding! dont take this course, way too difficult!
The best teacher I've had so far. very insightful and passionate I loved it. would recommend her to anyone truly interested in learning.
my papers went from b- range to b+ and a range---she is hard but what a great teacher!
this teacher is a hard marker. she has good memory so if you miss class she knows. this clas so hard and boring.
teacher is VERY hard for first level english course. marking is very unfair!!!
i did my readings but this class is damm hard, she's nice but beware extremely HARD marker. if you take her class good luck! remember she's a hard marker ,very hard marker
She was very fair with her assignments and included non-technical aspects of poetry which made the class more interesting
she was a very fair teahcer and if your looking for a class to actually learn in it is awsome but if your just looking for a credit don't bother.
Good Teacher! There is a lot to learn from her. Fair and open minded. But if you hope for an easy ride in 130, forget it!
Trish is awesome... best prof i've had so far!
Great teacher. Expects a lot, marks hard. Made me raise my standards. You will learn a lot. Took it 2 years ago (part-time student) and my essay grades in other classes improved dramatically. Got my first two A papers.
Best teacher i've ever had! Definitely not an easy class...but you'll learn soo much!! Trish was really easy to ask for help...and her marking seemed fair.
Very impatient, treats students like children, very snappy to unwanted questions and condescending.
Get in an argument, get a C+ or lower. Silence is the best way to success in this class.
so much to read, so little time. Trish was really nice and not a bad marker.
Very hard course, will learn important stuff though. Trish is intelligent, good teacher. Learned a lot from her.
She can teach, but she's not the best.
Love this class so far. The material is laid out perfectly to maximize learning. Quality class discussions. Interesting course and important for anyone to take.

can succeed in her class as long as you put in the effort, very nice lady, always willing to help if you ask and show interest
Trish is a passionate instructor. Very likable but at times seems patronizing.

The course requires alot of attention. We wrote 5 essays during the semester. She seems nice but there is alot of readings and you discuss them in class - so be prepared!!!!
she's a very hard marker.she gives out alot of so-called "guidelines" for the essay, and insist that they are helpful(but they're really NOT)and should follow every single one of them(they're very unclear). She's so demanding and impatient with students.
Not impressed!!!!!!!!!
She obviously prefers gay students for some reason. Very clear on what she wants... you need to be very insightful, or you need to have her opinion to have a very good mark. If you don't do your work... she'll rip you apart.
This is a tough ride but at the end of this class you can write and actually make sense in English.
Avoid this class at all costs! Especially if you don't want to listen to someone complain about everything in the world....this is especially not a good class for people in business because she rips it apart....not good!

If you like Business or Marketing, do NOT take this class, as you will hate the material and her. Plus she's a feminist hippie-****.
she was not VERY NICE AT ALL. she is stubborn, thinks shes always right and if you suggest something else she'll try and make u look like a moron. hard marker, i thought.
A very tough marker on essays, but she certainly does have a passion for teaching.
Her english class was a bore! If you don't want your GPA TO SUFFER-FIND ANOTHER INSTRUCTOR!
I thought Trish was a great teacher! Loved her feminist stance on issues, and though her marking was hard, if you followed what she said, you would do well. Really enjoyed poetry too!

She's awesome. Marking is hard though but if you attend class you should be fine. Study lots and start on essays with PLENTY of time to correct errors.
Good class...teaches you alot that I had no idea had happened. Relaxed atmosphere...overall great.
I had her for Academic Writing. Trish was pretty okay. As long as you go along with her feminist viewpoint you'll be okay. She's a difficult marker, but tells you how to improve. Very helpful if she thinks you'll use her advice. Aside from that always show up to class and listen to directions when she's explaining assignments.
1130 had the potential to be the most boring and aggravatingly difficult class ever, but w/respect to how Trish set it up, it made it a lot more tolerable, & even *gasp* relatively enjoyable. I would recommend her for this course-I've heard some horror stories about other teachers in 1130 & I can't anything similar about my experience in her class.
Trish seems to hate on anyone who seems to somewhat care about their appearance! It may sound dumb, but it seems that anyone (mostly girls) who look like they spent time on their hair/makeup/wardrobe she seemed to have a grudge against.. treated them (without seeing any of their work) as "stupider" than the rest!
This is a difficult class, but if you work hard, can accept criticism, and take Trish's advice, you'll become a better writer. I had a hard time at the beginning, but I continually made a huge effort to improve my work and I was writing much better papers by the end. Take Trish if you want to learn and are prepared to work hard. She's a good prof.
Reading-interpreting poetry, short stories and dramas (scripts) is all u will do in this course with 2 big essays.gives reading responses that counts towards marks so missing a class, missing a reading or discussion on a reading is not a good idea. With a great passion and understanding of each topic discussed-Trish made this course interesting.
i took trish in eng.11 and in fiction, poetry and drama. first year i didnt like her, i thought she was mean and a hard marker. second year i gained lots of respect. she is nice, funny, and wants you to do well. she clarifies things a lot so GO TO CLASS!
Her class is tough. It isn' easy. But if you strictly follow her instructions, pay attention to her course pack and follow the steps to be a good writer, you'll get a grade. It's a matter of your effort, and you willingness to adjust to her requirements and work hard on every detail of your writing. Don't do it your way, do it her way.
Trish actually makes 1130 interesting! She seems passionate about what she teaches, and if you follow the way she instructs you to write your life in college will be much easier. Even though she can be a tough marker, you will be clear on her expectations, which can't be said for many Eng instructors.
Best instructor I've ever had.
Outstanding.
You will learn how to be a better writer in this class, and you will learn with interesting material.
Trish is an extremely difficult marker!! Although she is a very nice lady who wants her students to do well. An "A" paper in her class takes a heck of a lot of work.
She is very unapproachable and rude. She wanted us to write anonymous questions down so people wouldn't be shy asking, and then she criticized every question we wrote. She has her favourites and don't even think of coming late because she will call you out in front of the whole class. I found she was very unfair with her marking as well.
Good teacher, hard marker, Getting an A is a lot of work. Is helpful when you need help, but sometimes makes you feel like you're stupid. Content learnt is some what interesting
tough marker, interesting class and topics, disiplines students in front of class-(makes them feel stupid)unprofessional in that sense
horrible teacher!! Dont ever take her if you want a good grade in English.
Trish was clear about what she wants from the class. However, her comments were unclear and not helpful. A tutor says my essay is clear and cohesive, Trish said it was not clear and cohesiveness deserves an F. The tutor doesn't understand her grading, and why I would get a bad grade. Also its gendered biased, men gets great grades and women bad.
I found Trish a very good teacher, her topic was very informative and interesting, and she definately made a subject that I don't find very easy, actually much easier for me. I found her very organized, but she does have high expectations. If you are showing interest and trying, she definatey does the same.
Class is hard. High expectations for first year english. Topics are interesting. If you want an A; will be difficult. Like I said, hard, high expectations, and very opinionated.
Fantastic professor! Absolutely a wonderful woman! She knows what she's talking about, and has informed opinions, something she expects (both things) of her students. Definitely have to go to every class and do the readings or you'll get very behind. If you're looking for an easy grade, this isn't the class for you.
Trish is an awesome teacher and I totally recommend her. I was in her academic writing class and it was really good. I learned a lot and she kept it interesting.
Trish Matson is a fair and well-organized prof. Expect to learn a LOT from her. Seriously, unlike some other classes, you will use this stuff over and over again! Good class, and though she tends to be very opinionated, I didn't find her grading was biased in any way. VERY high expectations, but just 3 or 4 essays, usually one being a re-write.
she rocked!
She's rude about "Side Conversations";ya cause we're really having a conversation when we ask "did you see what she wrote there". She is also very unmodivational and critical; because she has a "image" to withhold amongst fellow professors. Instead of setting a goal to have everyone in her class succeed, she would rather promote dropping out.

Trish is a great teacher. I took Women studies with her and it was a great class. Because she usually teaches English classes it seems she expects alot in terms of writing ability. This course was alot of writing!! Very interesting though and Trish is a great teacher!
I'm not very good at English in the first place, so I asked for a lot of help in order to get a decent grade. Was not very empathic towards me because I missed 2 classes due to family issues. She did not help me very much with my essays even in private meetings. Received a C in the course. Won't be taking a course with her again.
Good teacher but really hard marker. Class discussions are always interesting.
Very good teacher in terms of invoking class discussion about material as well as guiding you through the thought process of understanding and viewing the literature in different ways. At first she may come off as intimidating but as long as you make the effort to participate and do the work you'll be fine.
Trish is a really nice person, and she will go the extra mile to help you. The course is pretty dry, and she is a very hard marker. If you aren't a very strong writer, Trish won't be a good teacher for you.
Patricia is a great prof, you learn so much from her. She is always available to help you out. Needless to say it was a very tough course, really hard to get a good grade, if you are looking for an easy A this is not the course to take. If you want to improve your writing, take it with her ! Wonderful person!
Excellent professor with clear expectations. Willing to help and give advice if needed, but also a very difficult marker. The class itself is more like a sociology class rather than an English class, so don't expect grammar exercises.
Amazing prof, extremely hard marker. Brings loads of insight to her lectures and really expands your thinking. Very clear and constructive criticism. You'll be able to write an incredible essay with what seems to be minimal effort afterwards! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
She has obvious ways she wants the course work to be interpreted and marks accordingly. I had a huge interest in the subject prior to the class and couldn't wait for the semester to end. I worked my butt off and couldn't manage to get over a C+ on any assignment (EVEN when I got a prof from UBC to edit my work) I wouldn't take her again.
Trish is a very nice person and is extremely passionate about what she teaches. She is unbelievably hard though, such a tough marker! The nice thing about her class is that there is no midterm or final. She is VERY picky how she likes essays written. It's tough to get more than a C+. Wouldn't recommend her.
Best English instructor I've ever had! If you come to class, put in the effort, and ask her for insight on your writing she will help you so much. She puts a spin on Academic Writing by incorporating current events and sociological issues. I have managed to get at least a B on everything so far, so the previous review on her hard marking is false.
She is nice and entertaining but is the hardest marker I have ever had. I've worked hard and only ended up with a C-; her marking is very specific in what she is looking for. She has a background in women's studies which explains why she also has a feminist perspective in the way she teaches. It gets rather annoying after awhile.
Do not take poetry if you think it's going to be easy compared to other English courses. She is one of the hardest markers I've had. Her teaching style is unique & clarity is perfect. She is very kind and will help you if you ask for it. If you don't prepare for her lectures you will have trouble understanding it.
Interesting class, just very hard marker. Don't every take this if you're only doing it for the marks. Only take it for fun, or else you will be left with disappointment. Trish may seem nice at first, but do not be deceived. She's got some demons that you do not want to conjure.
Trish was a great teacher on a personal standpoint, keeps class more interesting than most 3 hour lectures. But an unbelievably hard marker, she's very specific. Also, if you're not interested in the topics she chooses (most feminist issues) then it's even harder due to being uninterested. Overall, nice but would not take a course with her again.
Trish really helps you learn how to write papers, and has clear guidelines, gives example outlines, examples theses, and sometimes example essays, but she is a hard marker. Overall, she's a very informative prof.
When you need help and talk to her one-on-one she gives you very good feedback. She is very strict and firm on her marking and gives good criteria. This class with her is very hard and I tried my best and worked by butt off and got a C+, but I did learn a lot from her. This class will most likely drop your GPA but she is a very good prof.
I've taken a couple classes with Trish, and I really enjoyed them. Her subjects are really interesting, and I especially loved Reading Poetry. Do not take her if you want an easy A, because that will not happen. She's a hard marker, but she's really helpful with her feedback, and I feel like I learned more that way.
Would never take again. She's an awesome person but my perfect GPA is now wrecked... Hardest classteacher I've ever had.
Trish is a really nice lady, but an extremely hard marker in my opinion. I don't think she liked me very much because she was really hard with me. Once, she told me I didn't have the pre-req to be in her class, although I was an A student in high school. All in all, I would not take her again.
This lady loves the sound of her own voice and is one of the hardest markers I have ever had. My English classes didn't transfer from my original university (which I got a mix of A's and B's in ) and I was struggling to achieve a C+. Not because I wasn't willing to try but she only wants a certain essay written her way with no room for creativity.
Awesome teacher! Very helpful if you seek extra help! Essays are hard and she marks hard but overall she's really great! You will have to work extremely hard to get a good mark as I worked by butt off to only get a C+ :(
Fantastic teacher! Best professor I've had in post secondary. Trish makes academic writing easy! The corse package she made is AMAZING, even if you are not in her class you should buy it and follow it. Trish incorporates modern issues into the curriculum, other professors need to take notes and try to impact students the way Trish does.
I highly recommend her class, you take a lot more from it than just academic writing skills. There are at least 5 'mini writes' (top 5 are graded) which are sort of like pop quizzes, so you have to read the material every day or else you wont get a good mark. very kind and funny!!
Trish was a great teacher! A challenging marker, however, she is only preparing you for further studies. She is so helpful, so take advantage of her office hours, time after class, AND her e-mail help. She was very helpful over e-mail. She sends back paragraphs and paragraphs of feedback! Use it to your advantage, we are all here to learn!
Course content is very interesting, but she likes to talk ALOT. She gives good feed back, but is a very tough marker. I usually get A's in an english class, but with her marking, a B-. Is like an English class, but on the topic of women's studies and gender role. Most people do worse than they expected. Reading every week, with questions.
Trish was a very nice professor, but the hardest marker I have ever encountered. I usually get an A in English courses, and I received a B-. I did learn a lot in her class which will definitely be helpful in the future. Be sure to take advantage of e-mail and office hours as she is always very helpful and gives amazing feedback.
Patricia is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Her lectures are interesting & engaging & she has a great sense of humor. She gives great feedback & is very helpful! She clearly enjoys & is passionate about teaching. I've learned a lot in her class & I'll definitely take another class with her if I get the chance.
Do not take this class if you a specific grade. She is a very hard grader. You will be expected to really push your limits. Lectures are super long, the class is usually full of third wave feminists. Very hard class.
Attend her classes, read the books and follow the essay criteria and you will have no problem. She makes you work for a good grade, she's very clear about her expectations. Not an easy marker.
Trish is an amazing prof. Very inspirational and mind opening. Also very captivating and keeps you interested. She can come off a little hardheaded but is very kind when you need the help. Expects good work as she knows she is very clear and thourough.
I took this class coming into it I knew it would be hard, but right from the get go in first lecture she was already lowering our self confidence in this class. I know many other students who have taken this course with her and they have nothing good to say. Would not recommend!!
Prepares a lot and is interesting. Pleasant disposition and calm. Eventually the penchant for feminism was revealed, so do indulge her in the papers and she will return the favour.
Very discouraging from the start as well as throughout the entire course. Gave me anxiety going to her class.
RUDE. If you're late she freaks out at you... Needs to be more understanding with that. People understand that you say important things in the beginning of the class, but that's why we have peers who we can ask. Not a good first impression. Talks about other things and probably wont answer your question with a direct answer.
Shes a super kind person but she is a hard marker. There are a lot of papers and weekly readings. I thought this class would be a breeze but it wasnt. It required a lot more time and effort than I hoped. I wouldnt take her class again because I felt she wasnt clear about what she wanted even though she made it seem like she was.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. I have always gotten high A's in my previous English courses but Trish made me feel like the dumbest person in the class every time I tried to seek help. She is WAY too hard of a marker and if your answers do not match hers then no marks are awarded.
A really solid choice if you actually want to learn how to write academic papers. Gives amazing feedback on all your papers. Her current theme is happiness which is meh. Graded on a summary and 3 papers mainly increasing in worth as you go through the semester. Engl 1130 is not an easy class in general so you will have to work for your mark.
Teaching is all over the place, grades very harshly. She may seem to be nice but she has that underlying"looking down on you"attitude She made me feel like a failure in class, I wasn't engaged in her lectures(I tried), her notes are messy Prepare to have lots of readings. Missing class will hurt you too, so make friends in class, they will save u.
A very kind person. Participate in class and youll do fine. Also read what you have to in order to succeed
Took this class for credit and it's a first-year course and she marked us like we were 4th-year students. Trish can be nice but if there is one small inconvenience she can be quite rude. I retook the class and with a different prof and ended up with a B+ and actually learned skills. Talks a lot about her spirituality which is a huge waste of time.
Shes a nice person and willing to help you, but I struggled to understand basic concepts that she taught and struggled to understand how to write an essay. The biggest issue I think was the lack of communication in trying to figure out how properly distinguish between what a university level essay is and what a high school level essay is.
Massively tough marker as 1130 is meant to be a difficult course. However, extremely sweet human who went out of her way to make sure I understood the content. Don't expect a high mark, but expect to learn a lot and have it fully improve all your future grades in other courses.
She is rude and very passive aggressive; she sent my entire class a massive email essentially saying how all of us failed or nearly failed certain assignments. What does that say about her teaching style? She responds rudely in emails and grades us as we are in 4th year. It seemed that she didn't understand this was our first year in post secondary
She is an awesome teacher! The way that she teaches is easy to understand and she provides extremely detailed instructions on everything. This class truly requires your time and attention and if you expect a good grade to come easy in this class with this professor, you won't enjoy this class at all.
ENGL 1130 is known to be a challenging course, but Trish made it fun. Stick to the essay directions & do the reading and you should do well
