MEAN MEAN MEAN - very rude, extremely sarcastic. Very angry, unfriendly person. Grading is extremely unclear. Stay away!
She's very strong in her subject, and can be funny, too. Too bad she is intolerable. She is just nasty, fickle and unfair. She is a bully. She gives no support to the assignments, and our whole class is lost. She is intimidating and unapproachable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I spent to weeks in the class and dropped imeadiatley she is the biggest B****.
Very charming and attentive! How ridiculous that she has received bad ratings. Silly freshman... Highly recommended she's a sweet-heart
she is an amazing teacher. if you are willing to put in time and effort into the class and show that you care she will help you out to the best of her ability. if you are a snotty freshman looking to get by don't take this, if you want to learn, take her
im a freshman and i find her to be one of the best writing teachers i've ever had! she's funny, very helpful, and taught me alot in only a few weeks of class.if u focus and appreciate hard work you'll love this class.
Stay away from her. I'm a freshman and I did not drop her class just because it is a requirement and I need it to take it this semester. Not recommended, she is just nasty.
I loved Professor Matthew. I hated poetry and she helped me to appreciate it so much that I don't mind reading it anymore. As far as being helpful, she has always told our class many times to come to her if we are stuck, and she has been able to help.
She was a great a great professor. I learned a lot in her course and I thought she was a very fair grader. If you pay attention, act like an adult, and want to learn, it's an easy A...just don't ****her off.
I was surprised to come to this site and see negative ratings for Prof. Matthew. I found her class to be enjoyable. As long as you do the work, you should do fine in this class! It is not the easiest teacher but she is helpful and interesting.
a great professor, she is very knowledgeable about the subject and expects you to be prepared and have done the readings and assignments. so if your a person who is lazy and not focused dont take her, but if your somebody who wants to learn go for it!!
I found this class to very interesting. We read some good stories and poems and she was very knowledgble about them. There's alot of work, but, she is a fair grader. The only thing I didn't like was her attitude, she was very moody at times.
Well, the fact that the person who gave her one of her only bad ratings can't even spell IMMEDIATELY correctly, says alot. Simply put, if you put the time and effort into this class, it pays off. Professor Matthew certainly knows her stuff. Take her.
She is great. A lot is two words.
She is very nice and has a great sense of humor. But, she gives the class busy work often. We are always in groups. We never talked about the novels we read as a class. Also, often times I felt like I was walking on egg shells. She is very intlligent though and I would take her again. Not too hard.
Professor Matthew is a very FAIR grader. I suffered very much last semester do to personal ailments and I believe that she was fair to me, regardless. This class is enjoyable. It will challenge you and it should, this is what College is all about. :) Thanks Dr. Matthew. :) ---Lynn <>
Dr. Matthew is a smart, funny, & interesting teacher. I like her a lot. At first I wasn't too sure. She really expects you to engage in discussions & keep up on the reading. She seemed difficult, but she is a fair grader...not an easy one. Now that it is over, I think I got a lot out of her class.
Dr. Matthew is a brilliant mind who is master of a great depth & breadth of literary concerns. Her comments are direct & clear, & enable a student to greatly expand her writing skills. However, her work load is heavier than many graduate seminars, & she has an intimidating classroom manner.
her attendence policy is ridiculous - thinks we have nothing to do but live for her class. grades harshly. most of the class was pure nonsense. HOWEVER, dr. matthew is a brilliant, engaging, fun professor and you'll learn a lot from her even if you fail her class. which you will. ;)
That last comment was ridiculous. You're obviously a mental midget for thinking Dr. M is out to fail you; she's great.
Dr. Matthew is a difficult grader and has high expectations from all of her students. If you disapoint her she will not refrain from letting you know how she feels but she is a great teacher and very inteligent and I recomend that everyone takes her class but be sure to give it 100%.
Dr. Mattew is, I believe, part of the "fab five" an apt designation for her and the rest of her colleagues. Fabulous teacher, remarkable woman. Always eager to help students reach the next level with her feedback and class assignments. Never asked us to do more than we could and makes the best ginger cookies in the East.
This class was mostly just SCARY! She is condescending, cruel at times, and singles out her victims strategically. And, if she’s having a bad day, rest assured you will have one too!She can be funny, but her dim students are usually the butt of her jokes! Just adopt HER ideas and don't take anything personally, she rolls her eyes at everyone!
Teaching most come natural and not everyone is born to teach. She is a very cold person with a very dark humor that only she understands. You will know if she has had a bad day misery loves company. I feel sorry for her because she is a very lonely and cold woman.
i just finished watching this woman degrade two students for talking in class after they apologized to her and explained. she put them down, made their responses seem stupid and then acted like a child herself as she storms out of the classroom. NOT A GOOD PERSON LET ALONE TEACHER!
Blames students for her inability or refusal to teach. She thinks all problems can be solved by telling students to come to her office for help instead to addressing problems in class. One student stormed out of her class declaring she didn't have time to come to her office every day. Not a professor for college students, maybe high school.
she is the most miserable person in the world. she interrupts and dismisses ur comments. she has faves in the class. and she craps herself everytime they talk their nonsense to one another. she is miserable n will ruine your day. week. month and year. she screwed up my gpa and my only C for the semester. she should be fired.
She does not know her subject matter very well and compensates by seeking out the brightest students and then ridiculing them. Not only is she unorganized but she is also not able to direct a class. Really, not a good professor at all. Also, she promotes a far left feminist agenda in class.
Very intimidating at first but over time I appreciated her helpfulness and realistic expectations. She took into consideration the amount of time I worked on a paper and effort that was put into it and for that I was very thankful. Not a class for someone who wants an easy A. I think she is right on target for college level- Goodluck!
Students are not to blame for a professor's lack of sensitivity and skill.
satan in training???
A professor who thinks very highly of herself, but not everyone shares her opinion.
She's a trip! Workload is UNfathomable! Course isn't for adults but for people that are into masochism. Dry sense of humor(as some1 mentioned)...yes dry as the Sahara Desert. On the bright side-very knowledgeable (about dead daydreamers) and does let up to give u a chance to b creative w/1 assign. Got an A, in therapy, but can handle anything now!
Its not mandatory that you "baby" your students. of course not. this is college. BUT at some point maybe she should try to treat them like normal human beings with feelings. she is BRUTAL and shows no sign of caring at all for her students or even the professor she co-teaches the course with. someone who should not be allowed near students ever.
I was really put off by her b/c she can be moody, but at the end of the day, you need to: READ, participate in class discussions, and go to her office hours if you need help. If you go to ask for help, she is very kind, understanding, and really willing to help you. The workload is a little tough but she knows her stuff, thankfully.
Great professor. She is very knowledgable. The workload is kind of heavy, but not unmanagable at all. Expect to read many books and write a few papers. If you don't like English Lit take something else.
Dr. Matthew knows her material, specifically the British Romantic period, which is great. However, she is not equipped to teach the material. She does not show any interest, or initiative in helping her students, or making sure they understand what is expected. Overall, I was displeased with the class and would not take any class she is teaching.
Dr. Matthew does know her material but I didn't think she was a good teacher b/c she wasn't helpful @ all...She expects you to think the way she thinks and she looks at you differently if you aren't comprehending.. Judgemental..Don't take her!!!!!
Matthew is very confusing. One day she is the sweetest, nicest thing, and the next class she has an attitude and is very rude. She switches on and off depending on her mood. there are 4 papers and she grades a bit tough. She wont read your whole paper, just your first Paragraph, She does'nt think that is helpful and I do not understand why!
She is obviously very interested in the subject matter, but is not interested in hearing any student interpretations that are different than her own. When she gives quizzes she is not clear on expectations and time limits. Half the students in my class withdrew, some after the withdrawal date. That should be an indication of her teaching ability.
I went in for office hours and she does not believe in reading the essays. When i went back again for help she was rude and complained I did not write enough of a rough draft yet she would not have read it anyway. She is not approachable and you feel very uncomfortable when you ask for help.
I see she hasn't changed much since she taught at UMass while working on her thesis. Demanding and ready-to-fire at those who don't suck up to her. very controlling.
Agree with last coment. She could benefit from a big heaping spoonful of humility. Acts like her opinion is God and God help you if you disagree! Hey, she gets an A for ABSOLUTELY AVOID!
Sometimes she's really cool and funny, and other times she can get real nasty. Do the reading, participate in class, and try your best on the papers. Oh, and don't walk into her class late with a coffee in your hand.
She is a tough cookie but she is very intelligent and really wants her students to strive to be better. Although she is hard, she is one of my favorite english professors and I learned so much from her. Basically, if your willing to learn, take her. Do the reading.
Dr. Matthews does know her material, and it quiet intelligent during class. But she certainly could use a taste of humanity and a bit of caring towards students, she is rude and mean.
Dr. Matthew is a tough cookie but only on those that try to get over or not up to par -- doesn't seem to tolerate stupidity. Overall, she is a great teacher and I learned very much from her. Beware though, the workload is grueling.
SO FAR I LIKE HER... I HATE HER CHOICE IN BOOKS. BUT I LIKE HER CLASS. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS NOT ENOUGH READING TIME, TEST ARE WERID, AND DID I MENTION BOOK CHOICE UGH!!
If you are looking for an easy A then she is not the professor for you. If you are looking for consistent grading and a fair and understandable grading policy in a class that you will learn a lot then look no further.
Amazing class. Amazing teacher. Read, participate, and listen to what she says. Yes, she is hard, but if you put effort into the class, you'll get a lot out of it.
Sometimes she thinks she a little funnier than she is, and there are certain days that she can to be very mean, but do ALL of the reading, participate and you will get a lot from this class. She is very smart and knows what she's talking about. Shes tough, but not impossible. I ended up with an A. I would even take her again
Matthew is a tough professor. Although she is intelligent and well educated when it comes to the romantic era, she is not a good teacher. She assigns an overwhelming amount of reading and it is nearly impossible to write a paper to her "high" standards.
Mary Shelley and the Romantic Poets... tough review to write.. sometimes I thought she was great and sometimes I disliked her.. she is intelligent and open to new interpretations.. but something about her is odd. she can be very short with students.. which, when you are working hard, can be annoying. but I have to say that I learned A LOT.
Didn't like this class at all!
To the previous commenter, shame on you. You're a grad student and all you could come up with is "I didn't like this class?" Not constructive at all. Dr M is smart, clear, v helpful and straightforward. If I had 1 criticism, it would only be that she didn't provide a grading rubric for one of our assignments beforehand.
OMG she is the worst professor at MSU I will never take her again. Save yourself the trouble !
Dr. Matthew is intelligent, however she lacks social skills, she's rude, arrogant, and obviously, shows favoritism. She lacks the ability to treat others with respect. She honestly appears socially challenged.
Prof. Matthew is unpredictable. She seemed to like me but she humiliated others. I don't think she is aware of it. It's a personal problem. If you don't agree with her, she shames you. I don't know why she is so insecure, which is, probably why she behaves the way she does.
Dr. Matthews is very intimidating if you don't get her sarcasm or humor. If you understand sarcasm, she's hilarious. Her class was really enjoyable and fun to be in. But she is very vague when she gives her essays out!
She teaches level 200 classes at level 300, so prepare to work. Attendance is mandatory. Reading assignments are 200-300 pages of reading a week. She grades very fairly. She is very engaging and funny in class so you will not be bored. You will be expected to participate in class. You won't be able to get away with not reading the material
the class was a lot of work but she was understanding of that & sometimes gave extensions. the stuff i learned in her class i was able to use in other classes, even non-ENGL ones. she shows some favoritism (kid in class did none of the reading, but she had him before & gave him good grades even though he BS'd). overall, she was a good professor.
Dr. Matthew has a lot of wisdom--and she seems so young! I have a feeling that one day I'm going to be able to say, "Oh yeah, she taught me at Montclair." Take her classes!
She is awesome. Great personality funny when appropriate and not afraid to tell you where you're at. She does care about the subject material as well as her student's progress and will sit with you when you need help. I had a great experience with her.
Prof. Matthew was great! She really knows the material and is completely open to other opinions. She likes class discussion, so be prepared to talk. Her grading is fair and if you ask for help on a paper, she'll be willing to help you out, no problem.
She is nice. Not available by email..ever. Alot of reading.. Tough Grader. Overall okay. Wouldnt take her again though.
She could sometimes be very unprofessional when she may find her self humorous. She seems to be a nice lady and offers help during office hours. She brags about her degrees but she seems to be more well suited to be a professor of theatrics instead of English.
She is so full of herself and to make matters worse, she isn't a good instructor. Below average is being kind to this queen of vanity and if you have looked at her lately, she has nothing to be vain about. One of those professors who you can tell never held a job before going into academia. MSU can do better than this. She's isn't worth taking.
she is a delightful professor to have and keeps classes fun and intellectually stimulating. if you reach out to her during her office hours, she is more than willing to help you improve. she made poetry translucent and comprehensible to the students. great class.
If you don't care about your education Dr. Matthew isn't for you. If your interested in leaving school with more than a piece of paper she will contribute to your success. By always upgrading her style of teaching she holds her end, reading these comments you can tell who didn't contribute their end.
i will never take her again. very judgmental person. loves to brag about studying over sea. assigns tons of reading, an impossible amount. Like to make people feel smaller and less educated.
If you're at this stage in your education--junior or senior--then you will find very few things to complain about in Professor Matthew's teaching style. You'll succeed if you read. People may complain she assigns too much reading, but that's laziness speaking. You're an English major. She's an English professor. Expect to read. Be serious, she is.
"Dr. Matthew has a lot of wisdom--and she seems so young! I have a feeling that one day I'm going to be able to say, "Oh yeah, she taught me at Montclair." Take her classes!" LOL. Nice try, Professor Matthew.
Professor Matthew is an excellent professor, but only if you are willing to work hard. I would not recommend her to non-English majors. You need to be in the class to push yourself academically and to learn, not just to fulfill a requirement or get a grade for your diploma. If you are up to it, you will learn a lot.
Ms. Matthew often made her credentials and her personal views clear. Response? "Great. Now teach us something instead of making us feel inferior." I lost respect for her as an educator when she said, "If I marked everything on papers that needed work, you all would be devastated and never pick up a pen again." Thanks for the encouragement. Avoid.
I loved Professor Matthew. She was encouraging and really was trying to get through to everyone in order to succeed. I hate poetry and she really found a way to make me understand and enjoy analyzing it. I felt I really grew in her class. A lot of work, but worth it.
I did not enjoy this course. I had a really nice TA who was also a student but I found Professor Matthew to be kind of rude and full of herself. She has a lot of experience but I feel she brags a little. The papers are kind of confusing. I do not recommend her.
She is the most biased women I have ever encountered. Do NOT take if you want your GPA to remain where it is or get better. She is not clear and favors students. Only talks about her self and talks down to you like you are five. She has her mind made up whether you will pass or not before you even write your papers. Beyond tough grader.
She actually made my stomach turn going to her class I was so afraid of her. Still am. She hates you if you do not see things in her eyes. Talks down to you and never explains her grades just tells you that's how it is and you have no hope.
Prof Matthew knows what she's looking for, just not always how to ask for it. When I took this class, it was her first time teaching it. After our experiment, she figured it out. It's structured as a study of British Slavery. Long, sometimes confusing papers, but go to her for help you will do well. You must WANT to learn.
Dr. Matthew was probably the worst professor I've ever had. Never once in my life have i gotten lower than a B on a paper and for both papers I got C's! She gives little to absolutely no feed back (literally on the last paper all i got was a grade). She even asks that you do not email her questions regarding class or class work at all. HORRIBLE!!!!
Class is best for English majors. She's looking for serious students only. If you don't have tough skin her classroom is not the best environment for you. Expect to work hard and read all your assignments. She is tough and her class is no joke.
She has a major chip on her shoulder and talks down to the students. I don't know how many times she mentioned her PhD. She tried to make people feel small and stupid. Super insecure but trying desperately to cover it up. She told one girl who's GPA was borderline to abandon her dream to be a teacher. She is on a major power trip. Do not recommend.
Like her as a person, but not thrilled as a professor. Everything is somehow always about race. Learned very little about how to become a better writer. Feedback was minimal and useless. TOUGH grader, very hard to please her.
Professor Matthew is the worst Professor I've had at Montclair. She favors students in the class, especially if you've taken her before. She is so unclear about how she wants you to write your papers and then grades them very harshly. How can I write what you want, if you don't explain it. I will never take her again. This was my first C in college
Honestly it's a week into my winter class with her and she's very unclear. She didn't state we had to specifically post our assignments in a different tab, but instead I had to find out by myself as I read through the discussions. She's unclear and goes back and forth on how she wants her assignments done and brings it down on her students.
This Professor is HORRIBLE. She is an extremely unfair grader, and as many people have so far mentioned, she is super unclear about what she wants. I had to clarify something in her own syllabus for her and was forced to contact the head of English department because of the unfair grades she's given me so far. It's absolutely ridiculous.
Dr. Matthew is one of the best professors at MSU. Her class is interesting and she uses a variety of methods to teach and engage her students in conversations. Small in class group work as well as discussions are mandatory. She also knows when no one reads the material! The book is must have. Shes willing to help and gives good writing tips.
Professor Matthew gives an unrealistic amount of work. It's as if she can't accept the fact that students are in other classes, and/or have internships, jobs, families, and other responsibilities. On top of that, the material is complex and she's unclear! The worst part is her pretentious/condescending attitude. Listen to me please: DO NOT TAKE HER
Perhaps people don't expect this caliber of teaching at MSU. If you went to a more prestigious university, Dr. Matthew would be your favorite professor, by far. She is passionate about what she is teaching. She is an established writer, so of course she expects the best from you. I came out a better writer and student because of her.
Hardest class I had at MSU so far. She's unclear abt what she wants & gave me many C's. I'm normally an A student. I received a B in her class. Her lectures are great. But she's powerful af & made me cry twice. Made me not want to teach anymore. I'm taking her again bc it's mandatory. She's brilliant, but scary. Pretentious but funny. Love/ Hate !
Dr. Matthew is an exception teacher. Though she's a professor people love to hate, I absolutely adored taking her class. Her insight and intelligence are unparalleled at MSU, and I signed up to take her again as soon as I could. I don't think it's particularly fair that people take swings at her because she has high expectations- earn your A!
Dr. Matthew is probably the most intimidating person I've ever met. It's a writing class and the whole 3 hours was class discussion. I didn't learn anything about how to write an essay. Constantly stressed about her class. Probably won't take her again unless I have to. Wouldn't recommend
Professor Matthew was such a gem!! Im so glad I took the class. I learned so much in her course and would really encourage anyone who genuinely wants to learn about Literature to take her.
I liked this class though I found it hard. Dr. Matthew pushes her students to break out of the normal writing format we've been forced to follow (5 paragraph essay) and though I found it difficult I enjoyed it. She is always willing to help her students and her class discussions are very insightful.
Dr. Matthew is a great professor. She can be intimidating in class but in her office hours she's kind and you really feel like she wants you to do well. Her lectures are interesting and interactive, just make sure you do the readings or you're going to find class boring. Gives clear directions for papers. If she doesn't like you you will know.
Professor Matthew is an amazing professor. You can tell she puts a lot of effort into selecting the material for the course and is prepared. She gives amazing feedback on essays and the lectures and exercises really help to tighten up writing styles. I feel like I understand concepts much deeper that I used to struggle with because of her course.
Hard grader and does not answer emails. She is accessible outside class if you need help, does not mind the use of technology in class. For the first paper she is very vague about what she wants for it and still grades hard on it. The instructions were very vague and very confusing. After the first paper she is clear about what she wants going.
Dont waste your time. Her assignments are vague and the class is only lectures and three papers on of which is single spaced. If it wasnt a requirement I wouldnt have taken it because it was a waste of time and money for me.
Class with Professor Matthew is what you make it. You have to participate, ask questions, and at least show her that you're making an effort. She was so helpful the entire semester and made everything easy and stress-free in a really difficult time. I loved this course and I hope I get to take a class with her again!
Dr. Matthew is one of the toughest graders I have ever had, but she gives great feedback on each essay, especially if you ask for it.
Love her so much! An amazing English class!
I'm not even an English/Writing/etc major, I'm a science student, but Prof Matthew was very approachable and kind, and her class was enjoyable. Discussions and engagement with class and content are important, but that's to be expected with a novel reading class.
Attending class is mandatory all though not useful, professor uses it as time to complain about political issues and not talk about anything relevant to an assignment. Flex's power often in class stating how she controls what is put on the syllabus and how she controls the grading. Not a good professor and I think she is aware of this.
Dr. Matthew was a great professor who provided very good feedback on all of the papers we wrote in her course. You could sense that she did care for the content she was teaching. Make sure you participate since the class is very discussion-oriented.
Professor Matthew is a tough but fair grader. While the assignments can be challenging, she provides great feedback to help improve your writing. The class discussions are engaging, and using resources like unstuck study alongside the required readings really helped me succeed in this course.
Unprofessional and irritating. Don't expect to have a civil conversation with her, it's her way or the highway and if you disagree just get bent.
