AWESOME prof... loves her classes... helps out whenever needed! take her class
very nice prof, her exams are difficult, but STUDY and go to class, she is cool!
really nice prof., go to class and take good notes - take her!!
She's SUCH a nice lady! Very Helpful! Not extremely easy though...
exams were not over things we covered, why even go to lecture then?
nice...but hard, take ver good notes
allows ques; helpful and friendly; uses old quizzes for final
Awesome prof, interesting & fun lectures, VERY HARD tests!
Very helpful. DO NOT miss any classes.

hilarious lady, knows what shes talking about, very helpful
Very nice and funny professor, take her if you get the chance!
BORING!!! She attempts tor elate though, I guess thats a plus, but so annoying.
Nice lady, made me laugh, but tests were hard. Go to class and take good notes.
funny lady, but DO NOT MISS CLASS, quizzes are quite hard
very nice and helpful! take notes. not too hard. she knows her stuff!
If you dont understand biology, don't expect this woman to change that.
Great prof!! Go to lecture! she makes sure you understand!
nice lady - very friendly but WAY TOO MANY lecture notes - dont need book
really funny prof, easy class if you study and i didn't use the book once
Very nice! HARD class, study a lot for quizzes and exams. go to lecture!!!!!!!
very helpful, but hard quizzes and tests...do not pertain to lecture material

Good class, tests are hard and Q's are tricky, quizzes are easier
Very nice woman

Easiest class I have. I love her stories.
WORST CLASS EVER....will not help you when you need it...does not seem to care about students...will fail you...no such thing as brownie points...yiou have to pass all of her exams....even if youa re at a 58% you will still fail the class...participation
The quizes and exams are really hard, but go to lecture and you will do ok.
Awesome prof! She tells funny stories & uses helpful analogies!
She gives great analogies to help you understand concepts. Even gives you her home phone number if you have any questions. She's 56 and stays up till at least 11 to check e-mail before she goes to bed. Very nice lady.
Pat is great! She is willing to help whenever. She drops the lowest test or quiz at the end of the semester. Definitely take her class if you can!

Great lady... VERY helpful. STUDY FOR THE TESTS AND QUIZZES-- they are kinda tricky.
Awesome lady and very nice. Good at explanations which makes her a good professor. Quizzes and exams can be a little tricky.
Nicest lady! Good stories and analogies. Don't buy or read your book. Just study lecture notes and make sure you go to class. Cares about students.
Great prof! Took her for both Bio 103 and Bio 112. Gives great notes that make the tests and quizzes easy. Dont need book just the lecture notes. Great stories and analogies to understand material
Great teacher, very informative, and loves what she does. Class isn't too bad just make sure you go to the lectures. By the way, the book is useless, study the notes well!
Great prof! Very good at explaining concepts.
Good stories and interesting class, but grades papers on her own views rather than quality of paper very "rightwinged"
Great prof! Funny. Very knowledgeable. Loves to help. I wish every prof had her professionalism.
prof. matthews is very nice. a wonderful person. she's pretty hip and very helpful, but her exams and quizzes are vague and ambiguous as to what she wants. the 6 week summer class was rushed. but... she is VERY NICE.
Sweetest woman in the world. Study her notes (alot)and you'll pass easily. But you HAVE TO STUDY cause her tests are hard.
She is so cool. Prof. Matthews is a great teacher! Make sure to STUDY for quizzes and exams. They are challenging but do-able! I'd highly recommend this prof. PS: GO TO LECTURE!
Awesome lady. She does a great job of explaining things and is very fair. Her quizzes are pretty difficult and specific but she is a great prof.
The class was pretty easy as long as you study the notes. Plus she likes to tell personal stories that make the class more interesting. Genetics is a fun class anyway but she is really good.

Matthews is one of the best teachers at GVSU. Very organized and very clear on the material. Great Professor.
She is a good teacher, just kind of unorganized, but she is very helpful.
Her tests are VERY hard. Some things will be stressed in class and then never seen on tests or quizzes. Don't sit near anyone or make friends in class because she will make the accusations that you are "sharing" information.
Pat has 5 quizzes (20 pts each)2 exams (50 pts each) and 50 pts projects and final. She will bump you 1/3 grade at end and projects are easy 50 points. Hold the B+ and ge tthe A-. MUST READ TEXT ALONG WITH LECTURE NOTES!!
amazing woman...
She is a delightful professor after a day of horrible ones. She is very clear when describing concepts and tells excellent stories to help students understand. Test are hard but not confussing. Study THE NOTES and you sould be good.
I loved her to death. Nicest lady ever! I hope I get a chance to have her again somewhere down the line!
She is a great teacher. she makes class fun and interesting. she gives plenty of examples in the notes so as long as you go to class you will be prepared for the tests.
Even if you attend lecture you will probably fail her exams. Her lectures are interesting but when you get your exam you wonder where she got the information to write it. Good luck with this one!
She is awesome. Lecture was always a blast. She had us laughing every class period. I really loved the way she taught genetics. Quizzes are tougher in my opinion than exams. Study and all is good!
an awesome class. Don't buy the book, because you won't need it. Quizzes are harder than exams. Assignments are fun to do, though.
This prof is not qualified to teach this course. A independent study would be more helpful, and she doesn't know half the answers to your questions.
Dr. Matthews is so awesome - she is helpful, she is fun, and she knows her material. Genetics is a tough subject but Dr. Matthews makes it interesting.
Hard class overall..but hey its biology...its ment to be a bit tough..Her office is almost always open and she is very willing to meet with students even bribs with candy...I suggest though to pass tests..know everything she covers even her little stories
This prof. should not teach 150! She makes you write more than you should be writing, and causes her students to get behind on portfolio work! Do not take her
Interesting class, but her tests and quizzes are hard, she will put on vocab and info she never went over.
Great teacher. uses lots of analogies in lecture, take her if you can
I hated every minute of class. Prof is not organized at all and she is very confusing. The class is based on a portfolio and she does way too many unimportant things in class instead of what the class is based on. Do not take her or you will be upset.
PMat is very helpful and hilarious. studying is necessary to do well, but lecture goes quickly if she's telling lots of good stories. very nice and very funny.
Very confusing and very unorganized. Not enough time spent on the actual portfolio, and way too much time on connection papers between articles, she should not be teaching this course
PMat can captivate an audience. She's very charismatic and tells amusing stories while still staying on topic. Her tests and quizzes can be a little tricky; just be sure to take good notes and study them.
Did not learn a thing in this class, but since I was on her good side I did well. If you make her think you are a 4.0 student she will give you an A.
Very unclear, interesting stories though. Tests are very hard unless you dedicate a couple hours to study every day.
Dr. Matthews is the best professor for this class! Her tests are a little hard but study and you'll do well! Highly Recommended!!!!
She is so fun. Tells lots of interesting stories, makes you laugh almost all through lecture. Tests are VERY hard, along with quizzes. make sure you study the book, her notes and listen very well in lecture.
don't take her
she is one of the best profs yet! I failed bio120 when i took it first semester, but with her I passed with a c! I strongly recommend her to everyone!
nice cute old lady
Interesting lady, very nice and wants to help, but her tests and quizzes are insane! Mostly fill in the blanks. Study your butt off if you want to pass.
PMat rocks...I didn't do well in Bio the first time, she made the second time easier! Is really fun in class, and makes it worth going to.
She is very nice. Her tests and quizzes are pretty hard though. For quizzes go off your notes for tests read the book! Requires lots of studying.
really funny lady. really hard tests and quizes. study study study
pmat is awesome. one of the nicest ladies i've ever met. she keeps lectures interesting. quizzes and tests are hard, but you can get through them if you pay attention in lecture. very helpful lady
PMAT is great! She is a very interesting lady. She talks about her experiences as a fire fighter and paramedic frequently, to try and keep students interested. Exams and quizes aren't bad at all. Very nice lady with a great sense of humor. If you want someone who can teach, and be funny, TAKE HER!!
She has very hard tests and quizes. Don't take her if you don't like crazy peppy ladies. She gets off topic easily talking about her husband, dog, etc. She is alright but hard.
her test and quizzes aren't hard if you STUDY and attend lecture. her class definitely requires a lot of study time.
I did not like this class. I thought I understood it but did very bad on tests and quizzes, they are really hard. If you don't have the time to spend studying a ton then don't take her.
GO TO LECTURE! If you pay attention and take good notes you will be fine. If you don't pay attention the topics will seem much harder. Notes help immensely when studying for tests and quizzes. Not a harsh grader, and she curves the quizzes. Very interesting lady, as well.
If you go to lecture and take good notes you will do just fine. If you do this, you do not need to spend a lot of time studying and you will do well. She is also quite entertaining...very nice lady.
Very nice lady. No need to buy any books since the tests are all lecture material. Attend lecture and take notes and you will be fine. She grades on a curve and adjusts scores so they can only go up.
Hard quizzes & tests. Genetics should be a lot more interesting than she made it.
A fun, passionate teacher who makes class enjoyable. Doesn't hesitate to talk about her family, pets, past jobs to make Bio more real and tangible. Goes on tangents sometimes. Tests based on notes so you know exactly what to study. Cares about students, wants them to do well. Also teaches BIO 355.
Even though I only took FS 100 I could tell that she would be a very good professor...Tough but good. FS was great though b/c she brought candy every week :) Other that that she is very helpful & understanding.. and has lots of interesting storeis.
She is a very nice lady and cracks jokes in class. Although her way of teaching was hard to understand. She says to only study the notes for tests, but you must to be able to apply what you learn because there are questions on the tests that aren't from the notes.
Prof. Matthews was a very nice lady! Her tests were not easy but she gave you opportunities for assignments that brought your grade up. I would take her again for sure.
Nice prof. Interting class. Tests and quizes can be confusing even if you go to class and read the book. Overall a pretty good class.
She is a very nice lady and willing to help and/or explain things if you don't understand them. If you explain why you answered something you got wrong on an exam or quiz, she may give you credit for your answer. Lectures got long, but at least it wasn't difficult. Save your $, don't buy the book.
She is a great teacher. Very nice and always willing to help. Good at giving you the information you need to know in lecture so you know what to study and will know what sections in the book to read.
She is an awseome professor. I would take her for any class I can. She is helpful and funny. Her tests are ok, but her final is mostly review. Very good professor. Take her if you can.
PMat was an awesome prof!! She told stories which related to the material and made it easier to remember. Her tests and quizes are a little tough, but if you study you should do fine. She's always willing to help! I'd recommend taking her for any BIO classes you can...shes great!
First paper class average was a 3.3 out of 10. Don't take her. Terrible teacher knows little or no more than students.
very unorganized, loses students assignments, changed the syllabus 3 weeks after she said she was going to. Inconsistent with expectations. I would not recommend this professor. Maybe when she has more experience teaching she will improve.
This teacher was great she helped out any way that she can, but the lectures were a little lengthy but other than that she was easy and helpful!
I thought that this class was very easy. She doens't ask all that much from her students, just to come to class and pay attention. Prof. Mathews is a very nice and I think is sexy. I'd take her class again.
Not as easy as I thought it would be. Did not talk about things in class that were on the test. She did give some extra points to boost grades. Overall it was okay...boring class though...she reads from her pp.
It's hard to dislike someone as cute as she is...but she can be frustrating. The lecture seems very straight-forward and yet her quizzes and tests can be so difficult. Even if you review your notes and read the book, it's still difficult. Just feels like a lot of work with no pay off.
do not take this class if you do not like to write. we wrote 10 small papers (1 page), 3 larger papers (around 5 pgs) and had reading assignments every week. but, i got full credit on every assignment, not very diffcult, go to class and act like you are paying attention, somewhat disorganized
entertaining & interesting. exams = HELL, broad questions but specific answers, marks off for giving too much, but then sometimes theres not enough. every point is crucial, but she takes em off very quickly! dont take class unless you can read minds! grade DOES NOT reflect how much you learned!!
There are only two exams and about 5 quizzes in this class. She explains things well and all you need to know is what she goes over in class. About half of the final is made up of questions from previous tests and quizzes, so that is very helpful. Overall she is a great professor.
This class was a little challenging, but if you go to class, you should be fine. Get the notes if you miss, her exams are entirely what she goes over in class, including her examples that aren't in the book. I should have listened to other reviewers and not bought the book.
her lectures are very interesting, but tests are out of control. The class was a lot harder than you expect it to be. Even if you THINK you know the material, you will still probably do bad on the tests. If you are usually an A or B student, expect a C in the class.
Prof.'s lectures are simply coping notes from overhead. Claims that tests and quizzes come straight from them, but really don't. Made BIO a lot harder than it really is, and was hard to bring up grade because of the grading system. Lectures are just very boring, and make you want to not go.
Grading system sucks! very hard to bring up grades! I wouldnt take her again if i was paid too!
Her grading system is very weird; and she words things on the exams incredibly confusing.
I really enjoyed having her as a Prof. She was very nice and friendly, easy to ask questions and helpful. Lectures are outlines on the overhead, but she tells stories and gives lots of examples to make class more interesting. I would highly recommend her!
Such a nice lady, but her quizzes and exams were horrible. Even if you study hard, you might walk away with a C. Grade did not reflect the amount of work put into this class. Very hard grader on short answer questions, Should have been much easier than it was. Reads from power point.
Normally I didn't mind going, and my notes were okay. I even did fine on the quizzes. But her exams are IMPOSSIBLE. It's also hard to make up for a bad one. She's a nice lady with pretty tough exams.
Prof. Matthews is an awesome teacher. She knows her stuff and doesn't teach at a level that's way over your head. HARD tests and quizzes, though...class is graded only and tests and quizzes, so study hard. Biology is a tough class but she is always willing to help and makes it so much easier to understand.
matthews is awesome she knows her stuff and enjoys teaching it! Class is a little hard, but if you study you will do fine! Final is directly from old tests and quizzes. Cute lady too!!
Her lectures are bad, she tends to go off on random stories comparing the notes to food in some way. Her exams are impossible! Bust your ass and it will get you no where . Good Luck
Human Genetics was very interesting, challenging, and enjoyable. Key to success: know everything. Even after extensive study, the exams would still show my weaknesses. However, I then understood why I missed question and had it down cold for the next time. Fantastically organized. Always immediate (next day) feedback on exams and papers.
Very nice, keeps you interested with funny stories, dont read the book-just study whats on the overhead....pay attention, go to class, and study before the quizzes
No Comments
she knows the stuff but cannot get it across to students and then on quizzes/tests the questions mix up concepts so that it is extremely hard to know what concept she is asking about, I wish she would use questions that have been formulated by the authors of the text. How can you give a specific answer to a mixed question? You cannot learn in here.
She is the worst professor ever. I don't think she can speak english because nothing comes out clear. Exams and quizes are very hard. She asks for the smallest detail for everything. She will send you 500 e-mails letting you know her schedule. Avoid if at all possible. Wish I had more space to explain everything wrong with her teaching style.
She is a SUPER nice lady and will do anything to talk/help you. The class is REALLLLLY hard. She is a funny lady and can explain anything but her lectures and her quizes/exams are totally different. No matter how hard you try to study or do well it will not help wehn it comes down to it.
Her lectures are interesting and easy to stay focused on, but her tests and quizzes are kind of out there. STUDY HARD. I got an A on an exam, but I also studied for about 10 hours for it. She's very detailed on her exams, so study every word from lecture.
Harder class than what i thought, but not impossible. Prof was good. Really helpful! I learned a lot!
caring professor, and very helpful. need the book for diagrams and main concepts only. almost everything on quizzes and exams is from lecture. quizzes and exams are fairly difficult, and grade is based soley on that and lab. so go to class, and write down everything she says! anything she vocalizes in lecture is fair game for the exam.
Class was more difficult than I expected. very difficult topics and tests. lectures were fun and easy to understand however. Prof is also very available to help students and incredibly easy to talk to if you need help. Prof made class much more enjoyable than it could have been
Very good professor, has a great interest in making the student's time and efforts worthwhile. Take her!
She has funny stories and is very helpful. Her tests are pretty tough but it's really interesting material and you just have to study and read to do well. People complain about her because they expected it to be as easy as BIO 120. Quit complaining and take her, she's great.
She is a very nice helpful lady, but her tests are incredibly hard. The questions are really tricky. Her lectures are interesting.
Great person.
I had her for human genetics and she speaks in very common terms. However, sometimes she can mispeak herself. Sometimes seems annoyed if asking questions one-on-one.
Great Class. Great Professor. Test and Quizes come strait from the notes.
If you like to hear about her WONDERFUL kids...then you should sign up for this class. Moms have mom cuts...
She just goes through the motions. Tests consist of open format which you will hardly ever practice in class, and a bunch of multiple choice wordgames. Almost every question is a trick in one way or another. Still tho, there isn't much material so it's not too hard, and she's fairly nice.
Dante's 7th layer of hell is reserved for this course. Professor Matthews expects you to grasp the information as well as she does and if you do not she treats you like an idiot. Her tests and quizzes are torture devices. Even students who study like I did struggled. A WORD TO THE WISE: BIO-120 is not enough of a prerequisite for most!!!
I absolutely loved her! But she is not easy by any means. Her tests/quizzes are extremely difficult, and even if you study like mad you may not do well. But she is very thorough and I was never lost in her class. Very interesting subject matter, but difficult class. I would recommend her - she's very passionate about her subject.
PMat was a great teacher! IF you ever had a question she would answer it. VERY helpful in office hours and was willing to clarify on test questions. Answers e-mails quickly. Uses bb and e-mail to keep you up to date. Quizzes are fill-in the blank or short answer, exams are mc, t/f, short answer and matching!
Very nice. Lectures are enjoyable to listen to. She is very hard and I struggled catching up if I missed class.
Matthews is an instructor that is easy to listen to and her lectures are very interesting but when it comes time to take tests they are horrible. She generalizes the notes but her test questions are so specific. She is easy to find when you need help with an area but makes you feel stupid. Keep on your toes with her!
Matthews is ridiculous!! I love genetics and this class made me hate it..her notes are general and her tests are insanely specific she throws tircks at you like you wouldnt believe, and read the book carefully because she gets alot of questions from it...easy final though bc the questions are straight from old exams and quizzes
Matthews was the first prof in my three years at GV that I couldn't get enough of. I had no interest in genetics when I started the class, but by the end of the semester, I didn't want it to end. Def. take this woman. Yes, she's very difficult, and I failed a quiz here and there, but I still ended up with a B-.
If you want to do good in this class do not miss the lectures. the questions are very specific from the notes you take. I loved this class and i think she was a great prof. It's not an easy A, but you learn a lot and she makes it so interesting- I couldn't get enough. She doesn't offer extra credit, but she curves to your benefit. Take her!
Tough prof but good. Her lectures are quick and cover a lot of material. She provides analogies to help relate content to real life. Difficult exams but grads fair and curved. Study notes, read text, and attend every class!
P.Matt was straight foward. She told you what you needed to know, and when you memorized you did well! People complain only because they skiped class or didn't study. SURPRISE you have to go to class and study, it's 300 level, duh!
You have to go to lecture to do well...
Professor Matthews is great! Yes, she's tough when it comes to quizzes and exams, but as long as you come to ALL lectures (or at least stay up on her notes)you'll be fine. She's funny, very knowledgable, and definately wanting everyone in class to enjoy genetics as she does. Put in the work- i recommend her!
I disagree that she is straightforward! I attended all but one class and studied a lot, but still ended up doing bad. Her quizzes and exams are much more specific than her class notes. Be warned - your GPA will go down if you take this class!
She is a really nice teacher and i really enjoyed her class a lot. However the class is not easy and there is a lot of memorization. the tests come directly from lectures but are not easy. They are very detailed and sometimes not clear.
It is very wise to go to class and stay on top of lectures. She is a good teacher, but you can't expect a 305 class to be easy. Just stay on top of things and you will do fine.
Great Professor! A lot of material to cover. Need to go to every lecture, ask questions. She will go beyond expectations for a professor. Awesome person to talk to, always available. Highly recommend taking Matthews for Genetics! Enjoy.
Take this immediately after BIO 120. BIO 355 repeats most material. Tests are all mult. ch, match, short ans. and T/F. But she tries to trick you so read every term in each question and choice of answers. For short answer, have her clarify what she wants. She does make lectures very interesting. Plus you get to drop one test.
P.Mat is a tough old lady. Her lectures are interesting, but make sure to take very good notes. Exams are tricky and you need to understand the material in order to do well. Hardly used the book, just study the notes. Overall tough class, but it's very interesting.
She trys to trick you on the tests, shes not clear at all. I studied my butt off and still diddnt do as good. She is not helpful at all. I would recommed another teacher.
She knows her stuff and is an excellent teacher. Her test questions can be a little tricky but if you go to class and study your notes you should be able to get an A in the class
She is a great teacher! Her class is very well organized and she always goes above and beyond to make herself available. The tests/quizzes are hard but she expects you to put in enough work, since it's a 300level class. Make sure you take good notes. She is very funny so the time in class goes by very fast. You will definitely learn a lot :)
Professor Matthews was unreasonably tricky in her exams. I put in the time and effort studying, and could not understand her exams. I believe she does not test for knowledge, but instead tries to trick you. I had a 4.0 before this class and could not get better than a B.
Shes a good teacher and very knowledgeable on her subjects, I had her for genetics, and struggled somewhat, as you really have to right down the majority of what comes out of her mouth in lecture, overall thought shes a worthwhile teacher
pretty tough, and VERY tricky with tests, quizzes, and homework. Our class average for a TAKE HOME quiz where you would use anything and anyone for the answers was a 65% just because of the wording of the quiz. Very nice, and gives a great lecture but tricky!
its a 300 level class but she teaches it like it is a grad-level. Be ready to have to know everything...She is interesting to listen to, but she doesn't give very many examples and she assumes quite a bit. She says she is willing to give points back on homework...GOOD LUCK!
I was hoping Biomedical Ethics would be more interesting, but this class put me to sleep. The class is strictly graded on writing assignments and class participation. She repeats her personal stories all the time and the discussions get repetitive and boring. Plus side is that you get to read a good novel and save money on textbooks.
Please, please, please, please stay away from this professor if you value our grade. Yes, it's a 300 level class, but she treats it like a graduate-level class. Her quizzes and exams were unreasonably hard, and it seems she would rather trick you than teach you. I put a lot of effort into this class, but I still failed. So much for my 4.0.
Best prof I have ever taken! Just pay attention in class and study the notes inside and out and you will do fine.
take the class that grcc offers, it will transfer. don't take this class if you need a grade point to get into the nursing program. we could have learned alot in this class but we were too stressed just trying to pass the class. test questions are VERY tricky, 300 level class but teaches at a grad student level. don't take this class
Don't listen to people who say its hard. It is a 300 level course so you have to do more then look over your notes once. The class is mainly learning processes and there is not much memorizing. It really helps by talking about the material with other people to study. PMat is also very helpful and is up online tutoring people at 11:00 at night!
I loved having Professor Matthews. She is a tough professor that expects a lot on homework, quizzes, and exams, but her class was never dull! Very helpful and responds to emails promptly. This is by no means an easy class, but you will leave knowing a lot about genetics which has helped me breeze through some of my other classes like micro!
Talks about herself like she's too big for her britches. Claims to be a know-it-all, but really doesn't know that much and says things that aren't true. Doesn't know how to properly use commas and marks you down for using them properly. I expected better from an SWS prof. Aside from that, class isn't too bad. Don't bother buying the books.
HARD COURSE! Great prof! Teaches material well. No need to buy textbook, although it would be a good back up in case you miss class. She teaches right from powerpoints. Study hard and you will do fine.
A VERY hard course, but a great prof. The material is very interesting, on the flip side the exams and quizzes are very tricky...study a lot and attend class and you will do fine.
PMat is a nice lady but that's as far as I would go. I seriously studied so hard and yet would never get higher than a B. She always asks if there are questions but then gets frustrated when you don't understand. Her questions are often unclear. She has been teaching this too long and seems bored. I would get out if I were you!
PMat's tests and quizzes were impossible. I studied sooo hard and never did well...her wording is tricky. She tells you to ask questions but makes you feel stupid because you don't know something. I wasn't a fan.
PMat is a fantastic prof. You don't need the book, just pay VERY close attention in lecture. Her quizzes are harder than her tests, so be sure to study for them. They are not tricky, they just force you to know the material and put the necessary time and effort in.
I loved this class. PMat is a great teacher! tough quizzes, exams aren't too bad. Make sure you study and know her power points. She makes the class interesting and fun and is very willing to answer questions. I would definitely recommend her for this class!
Unique teaching style. Hang on to every word she gives in lecture and study the concepts that she mentions even if it seems like she says it in passing. Text book not necessary. Don't miss lecture! Very interesting lectures, sometimes she gets frustrated but she has great intentions and is willing to listen and help. Tricky wording for tests.
Her quizzes are very difficult since there could be anything on them. Be very through with the short answers. I dont know how many times I knew the answer but didnt wright something else that whe wanted to see (tricky wording). If your trying to get into the nursing program it is very difficult to get an A with this prof even for an all A studen
She is a decent teacher as far as lectures go BUT i have never seen tests and quizzes with such tricky wording. She just doesn't have any idea how to write a test. She also gets offended when you ask for clarification on things. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS TAUGHT BY HER if A's are important. Our class adv. for the first test was a 69%
she makes lecture interesting, but quizzes are hard. She changes content slight each semester, so the past quizzes and exams she posts for study purposes are useless.Powerpoints are a MAJOR part of quizzes and exams so attendance is a must.If you go to class and understand the topics you will do fine.Book is a nice resource, but it is not required
Do not take her for biomedical ethics. She does this ridiculous pseudonym thing that makes everything anonymous, and you cannot ask for help! Her class was so easy, but I had no clue what she wanted so I got solid B's. Frustrating...
She is absolutely horrible! I went to every class and studied the material on a daily basis, yet still did not do well. I did everything possible (ms3, study group, etc) and it still failed. A girl in my study group had her a semester ago and the class average was in B range, this semester is was in low C's. DO NOT TAKE HER, SHE IS HORRIBLE!!
Went to class everyday, it was easy to understood the material but the exams were EXTREMELY hard. It was very frustrating to study everything and understand everything and then bomb the exams.
Professor Matthews was extremely helpful and was willing to help as much as possible. If you put the effort in it is possible to get an A in the class. She does curve at the end if grades are low, which was a nice surprise. Don't buy the textbook it's not needed. Go to office hours and study in a group. Quizzes are much easier than the test.
she was interesting, but her quizzes you have to study everything or else you'll just have to pull the words out of thin air. her exams are hard as well. AVIOD HER bc she seems nice but really when i went to see her she just acted like i was a bother to her. i went to every class, but just everything was very hard.
She kept the material interesting, but quizzes and exams were tough. Textbook is not needed.
I agree with what the others said:Good teacher but horrible exams. take her only if learning is more important 2 u than getting an A. The majority only ended up w/ ok grades cuz she curved a ridiculous amount but its not guarenteed she will always do that. without her curves only about 2 ppl would have got an A
Lecture is interesting and important. You need to "apply" learned material on tests & quizzes, not just regurgitate it. I do feel this is good, but she does not do it well. Wording can be extremely tricky and it gets very frustrating. I sincerely feel that many questions were unfair. Do not expect or hope to get 100%. I'd avoid her if possible.
The class is challenging and there is a lot of information, but she is clear and always willing to answer questions. Does get cocky at sometimes, but is a funny and lively old lady. Didn't use the book, as long as you have a good Biology book you will be fine!
She is a wonderful teacher. Very chatty and always has stories to tell. Her quizzes are very hard, you have to study everything, and choose "the best answer" a lot. Her exams I thought were easier. Just make sure to attend every class because she will through questions out there from stories she told relating to the topic.
She's a really nice lady who definitely knows her stuff. Her tests and quizzes are a little tricky. It is a hard class but if you study and go to her for help it makes it a ton easier
Very nice professor, but VERY tricky. Make sure that you attend every class and write down pretty much everything that comes out of her mouth, because you never know if it'll be on a quiz or exam. She encourages study groups a lot and will even allow you to work with others on homework and put everyone's name on one sheet :)
Great teacher and super nice lady! Make sure you take really good notes though, she gives tricky quizzes and exams. There is no homework and the textbook is optional.
She is a superb teacher. She is not tricky at all, you just have to know your stuff. Take good notes, get help if you need it, which she is always willing to do, and you'll be fine. She is a fun teacher and I've never been bored in her class. PMAT definitely is one of the best teachers.
She is a great professor, and very easy to understand. She really wants you to do well, and is very helpful if you visit her office with questions. She's a great lecturer, so lectures are always entertaining. I enjoyed this class a lot! Her quizzes are easy but you really need to know your stuff because she makes you think on them. I reccommend her
Matthews is the best professor I've ever had. She is passionate about genetics and knows it inside and out. Her quizzes and exams are tough if you aren't clear on the material. I recommend her over any other BIO 355 prof. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and/or GET A TUTOR!! The material is tricky to understand without this. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Amazing! Makes lecture exciting and interesting. Really cares about her students.
Bad bad bad.
NOT GOOD AT ALL. SHE IS NEVER CLEAR ON WHAT SHE LOOKING FOR IN EXAMS.
This teacher is very nice, but she is not clear at all what she wants on her exams or quizzes. She probably knows genetics very well and seems to teach it well, however, on the quizzes and exams the questions do not reflect what she covered in class. Furthermore, the textbook is overly simplistic and full of errors
She is a little scatterbrained sometimes but is really nice and funny. She does well at explaining what to do on that days lab but not good at explaining why we did what we did or what the out comes meant. Overall its an easy class and she's a cool prof that isn't hard on grading and is very understanding.
I really enjoyed her class, but her quizzes and exams were pretty difficult and worded in a different way than the way she taught it. However, she has lots of office hours and is willing to go over anything that you're not quite understanding.
Great Professor! She's been teaching at GVSU forever and is very passionate about Genetics. Her exams and quizzes are not too difficult, if you study her notes. Write down everything she says, whether it seems relevant at the time or not. She has a lot of office hours and is willing to meet with students. I'd recommend her!
Great professor! Matthews has very clear, interesting lectures. Her power points on BB aren't completed so you have to pay attention in class. You don't need the book. Her tests are just like the quizzes but longer. She is very willing to help and has many times for office hours so make sure you use them. Group quizzes/homework too.
Matthews knows her stuff! This is not an easy class, but she makes it manageable as long as you study and come to class everyday. Going to office hours is very helpful if you're having trouble understanding concepts. Matthews wording is very tricky so pay attention and reread things! Her quizzes are harder then her tests but its doable.
Horrible! Worst class I've ever taken at GV! This teacher is all over the place and unclear. Puts things on tests and quizzes not discussed in class. Extremely hars tests and quizzes. Little to no/confusing homework. Hated this class! Ruined my GPA! Very nice lady though.
You never know what she's asking for on tests and exams. I would have gotten an A if it weren't for her terrible communication skills. She also gave us all break to do homework then changed the directions the day before it was due so we all had to redo it.
DON'T TAKE!! More than half of her current sections are failing and she claims she doesn't know why.. Because she is a terrible teacher. She doesn't explain problems enough or give us enough examples. Teaching myself through YouTube bio videos. DON'T let the 4.0 rating fool you .. Because it fooled me.
Don't buy the book. She definitely could explain answers to questions and what's on her test better, but all of the info is from her lectures. Go to every one, pay attention, take good notes, and the class is definitely feasible.
PMat is definitely a difficult professor but DONT let this scare you! The class is very interesting and she knows what she is taking about. It will take work but it is very possible to do well in her class, especially if you go to office hours. My advice, don't be intimidated and study!
PMat is a super nice lady! That's all she gets though. In semesters past, she was a wonderful professor albeit hard. This was not the case this semester. Probably 60% of the class has lower than a C. She doesn't know what she's doing wrong though, so there's no change in teaching style. I'm an A student and I'm going to be happy if I can pull a C.
She is a great professor! She knows so much about genetics and has a lot of real life examples to make the class interesting. We never used the book, so all the material on quizzes and exams was information she discussed in lecture. She is really helpful and wants to help her students succeed. Take her if possible!
PMat is a wonderful professor. She is very hard and you need to study to get a good grade. But she makes the class interesting and loves what she does. She genuinely cares about her students and makes herself available outside of class. So many people complained about the stupidest things this semester and she handled it well.
SUPER tough prof. she's nice, cool, and funny, but she's much too hardcore. Her "grader" aka her retired husband is the stingiest grader ever and you WILL lose stupid points a normal teacher would give you. Exams are close to impossible and quizzes tend to be harder than you think. Find another teacher if you want a good grade.
Don't buy the textbook, you won't even look at it. Go to class and pay attention to every single little detail she says and write it on the ppt slide. She puts them online so it's easy to follow. Some of the test is word for word from lecture, some requires application of knowledge. Learned a ton, hated her at first, but learned to respect her.
She's a very smart lady and her lectures are pretty interesting. She puts power points up for you to print ahead of time and take further notes in lecture. My only issue with this class was her tests and quizzes can be extremely tricky, you need to pay total attention to wording. You need to know everything from lectures, therefore you need to attend
Shes nice and funny. But, watch out, she intentionally will trick you on quizzes and tests. Its ridiculous. I have never had a professor do that and then not care that she tricked half the class and everyone got it wrong for the same reason. You can study endlessly and you will only get a B typically
This class is the hardest i've taken. The professor is very sweet and easy to understand, however, the exams and quizzes are extremely difficult. You need to study for the weekly quizzes the same amount you would for an exam. And the exams you need at least two weeks to study for. All fill in the blank and a few hard multiple choices.
This is a great professor for biomedical ethics. There are two novels that are read throughout the semester. There are no exams but three short papers and one 3-5 page essay of your choosing. This class is mainly a discussion but quite easy. She does take attendance and participation is factored into your grade. I would recommend her for this class
PMAT is extremely interesting to listen to while she lectures with all of her real-life examples and vast knowledge of the medical field. If you are going into medicine and you are doing well in PMAT's class, you are on the right track. I say this because her quizzes and exams are EXTREMELY difficult. I studied every single day and still struggled.
DO NOT TAKE. I read all of the comments before taking this class and figured I could do it. I have never done bad in a class, but this one was too much. Ended up dropping it. Went to her office for help, didn't do anything besides tell me to review what we were going over in lecture. All she grades are quizzes and tests- which she makes impossible.
I took this class with her twice, and both times ended up with the same results. The tests, quizzes, homework are all ridiculous due to the fact that if its partially wrong, its all wrong. If you ask her to give you a point back or you aren't happy with a grade and she literally gets mad and yells at you. WORST PROFESSOR AT GVSU. (BMS senior)
PMAT is one of the best professors I have had at GV. Although it is a tough class, her lectures are very interesting & grab your attention-she makes you want to attend class. She has a true passion. Put in the study time. Do the prep material she gives you before quizzes&exams. Do not let the work load scare you- it is possible to get a good grade
Professor Matthews obviously knows genetics inside out but does not understand that students aren't just taking her one class. Genetics is tough but what really made this class challenging was that the exams were only worth 50 points and each quiz 20 points. The exams are 50 points so each question equals to 2%.
Professor Matthew's lectures are very interesting but it is a challenging course. Her quizzes and exams require a lot of study time and preparation in order to do well. Her exam and quiz questions are difficult to decipher, so be sure to read carefully. She is very tricky. She is very particular with grading, make sure you are precise as possible.
PMat is amazing! If you want to succeed and actually understand if material and enjoy class, take her. The class is not easy, but her teaching style makes it very easy to comprehend and learn. Loved this class!
She is a really good professor with a lot of experience in different fields so she has a lot of real life, practical stories to tell. Her tests and quizzes are extremely difficult. You have to know all of the information inside and out. I learned a bunch but it was a tough class.
The class is all papers, participation, and 1 presentation project. Her grading criteria is so vague its hard to write a paper for her. I feel like she has a specific writing style and opinion and if you don't match it she marks you down. She's very smart in discussion, but not the most helpful when it comes to the papers.
I like her as a person, but her grading criteria for papers is outrageous. She is EXTREMELY nit-picky and will mark down for anything. She'll add commas to your writing where they don't belong, and cross them out where they do. I'm not sure she knows grammar as well as she thinks she does. However, arguing about your grade gets you nowhere.
Very nice person with awesome stories from her career as a paramedic. The content of the class is not hard but exams can be tough. The wording makes an easy topic impossible. Also, her short answer questions are almost impossible to get full credit on because she always finds a reason to mark down. You don't need the textbook so that's a plus!
Patricia Matthews is a wonderful lady. HOWEVER, her quizzes, assignments, and exam questions are EXTREMELY vague, and difficult to understand. Most of her quizzes are fill in the blank with no word bank. I failed the first 2 quizzes. You NEED to make over 300 flashcards for this class. She's a great lady, LOVE HER, but study as hard as you can.
I LOVED PMat! She was a tough grader, but I didn't find any of her quizzes or exams to be unreasonable. I never got below an A- on any of the quizzes or exams. Her stories and cute personality made this class super enjoyable! She was always available if you needed extra help, and she genuinely cares for her students. Take this class if you can!
Pmat is one of the best profs I have ever had! take her!
Pmat is very knowledgeable, however, her quizzes and exams are rather challenging. She does not offer any extra credit and gives about 5 homework assignments throughout the course. She rarely ever curves quiz or exam scores.
I loved Pmat! She is one of the best profs at GV and really knows how to teach. I would recommend her for BIO 355 and would retake her if I had the chance.
Patricia Matthews is the worst teacher to take for biomedical ethics. If you want an A, it basically is not happening. Additionally, you will not be learning anything from her. She monopolizes talking time and uses it to talk about her personal life story. Simply put, she is a caring teacher that grades WAY too hard for what she is teaching.
Matthews is extremely knowledgable about genetics, however her exams and quizzes are EXTREMELY VAGUE and she does not give partial credit on anything. Even though she is available for out of class help, she made me feel stupid and like I didn't pay attention in class.
Prof Matthews is such a sweetheart. Her lectures are genuinely fun and entertaining to attend. Shes a funny lady who tries to make class fun. You can tell that shes extremely intelligent and knows what shes talking about. HOWEVER, her quizzes and exams are SO hard. I would study nonstop and even get help outside of class so just be ready to be busy
Ok everyone here whining about how hard genetics is with PMAT is in for a reality check when they take ochem or biochem. THIS CLASS IS NOT HARD. Put in the work, get an A. Simple as that.
PMat loves to share stories in classso only got through about 6 slides per class because of her stories which resulted in her skipping multiple packets and having us teach them to ourselves. Not many easy point opportunities so get ready to study and test/quizzes are not straight forward at all, recommend taking at CMU for transfer credit!
Professor Mathews is very knowledgeable about genetics and has interesting stories to tell about her career, but I wouldn't take her again as a prof. Her tests are very difficult to study for and she had often put things on quizzes that we hadn't gone through in class. She said to ask questions but she makes you feel dumb for asking.
I had PMat for genetics and biomedical ethics and I enjoyed having her for both courses! Her class is discussion based, so it's engaging and rarely dull. No exams, so your grade results from several essays and two presentations. She is a fairly difficult grader, but she offered a generous curve at the end of the semester! Would take again.
I felt that I learned so much and still did so poorly in this class. I loved PMat and lecture was never dull, but I still found myself struggling to pass the class (which is very unlike me). She's a tough grader but there is a pretty heavy curve. Study material is vague but ask questions because she genuinely wants you to do well.
I really found myself struggling to pass this class. No matter how much work i put into it, it just was not showing. she is a good professor and lectures are filled with stories, but when it came time for exams or quizzes, i stressed so much. I do suggest another professor, i learned so much, it just failed to show
Patricia is an AWFUL professor. The curve at the end is not worth the stress and embarrassment you'll feel throughout the semester. I wish I could have taken this course with a different professor or online. Better yet, I should have dropped when I had the chance. She talks for ages and her ppt's are so VAGUE. Save your GPA & take BIO355 elsewhere!
PMat is easily the hardest prof I've ever had. She thinks she is being clear in lectures, but her quizzes and tests are SO HARD. She purposely words questions in ways so that you will get them wrong. She curves almost everything, but you have to work very hard just to get a B-. Save your GPA and take a different prof.
I didn't think she would be that bad but I was veryyyy wrong. Her quizzes and exams are ridiculous. Very picky and set in her ways. Purposely makes up confusing questions to make things x10 harder than needed. Didn't even start learning about genetics till the last month of class. Take someone else
We had 5 papers & 2 presentations. The majority of the semester was listening to presentations on ethical cases. She can be a tough grader but with a little effort you will get at least a B. I took AHS 321(Legal/ethics) before this class so the ethics were easy to apply in the papers. Make sure to go to class & participate because its 20% of grade
I dont think the other reviews about Matthews 355 class are fair. She makes the pwps more interesting by including exs. and if you pay attention and take notes you'll have everything you need to be successful on quizzes an exams. You need to study, but its an upper level bio class, if you go into a genetics class thinking its an easy A you're wrong
Umm... thought this was going to be my easy class of the semester and boy was I wrong. She tests you on the most ridiculous information that you wouldnt expect. I would study HOURS for a quiz and still get a C. She can be very moody, and if you dont know something she makes you feel like you shouldnt be in the class.
She is very kind and gives good feedbacks. PMatt works very well in a diversified population. She is very passionate about teaching. Go to her office hours. She will make time for you. Study her notes more than once and you will do good.
PMatt is an amazing teacher, she has a lot of knowledge and explains it well. She teaches with diagrams and power points. It is important to go to class in order to fill in the information she puts on the slides, as well as drawing out the diagrams she has. Her office hours are important to attend if you don't understand something.
PMat is a solid professor to take for genetics. She is caring and easily accessible outside of class. Definitely would recommend.
I had to drop the class when I have gotten high grades in classes with way harder material. It is impossible to get high grades on her quizzes and exams even when you memorize her slides, because she puts completely different material on her quizzes and exams. Your grade in this class will not reflect your full potential as a student.
Dont take her. Exam and quiz questions are insanely vague. She doesnt give very good feedback. If you write something a certain way and she doesnt like it, its wrong. Even if you were correct but she doesnt like the way you did it. Wrong. Goes off on a lot of side stories too. Maybe Im biased but that annoyed me.
Probably your best bet for genetics. She's not AMAZING but I've heard she's the best prof for genetics you can get at GV. Her lectures were very interesting but she is a very tough grader. She marked me wrong for giving too much information even though I had the answer correct. Quizzes are usually matching without a word bank.
The quizzes and exams are quite hard but she makes sure you learn the material. Tells a lot of stories in class but wouldn't recommend skipping lecture because of all the side comments. She drops the lowest quiz or exam and the final is a majority of old questions from previous graded things. I would recommend if you want to actually learn genetics
This teacher seems like a sweet old lady and she is! however her tests and quizzes are unnecessarily hard and she makes it extremely difficult to get a good grade on them. beware
Professor Matthews has been amazing! She does grade kind of tough but she gives you everything you need for the class in her lecture slides. You may have to look more in-depth into the genetic diseases, there is some stuff she puts in exams that you don't go over sometimes. But her lectures are great, go to them!
One of my least favorite professors. Became very condescending to students, lacked professionalism, and allowed her physical health, and pride, to affect her teaching. All tests are application based over minute details, no opportunities to practice this application prior to tests. Take another professor if possible, or at a different college.
Took her for BIO 355. She puts little to no information on the lecture slides and then grades on every small thing she said in class. Her exams are incredibly hard and very vague. She is a tough grader and often makes you feel dumb when you email her with a question. Would recommend taking a different prof for genetics if possible.
This professor was the worst prof I have had since I have been here (Junior). She made me feel super stupid when I asked questions and would not even answer me. The tests and quizzes were absolutely ridiculous. I knew that material inside and out and still could only get in the C range on them. I'd suggest you drop this prof. So not worth the hurt.
This class was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. The professor knocks confidence down and made students feel so stupid. Don't even bother emailing her or asking questions because she pretty much just says you should know this and is very passive aggressive. Just save your mental health and take a different prof or class.
She needs to retire, like now. I spent so much time and effort on this class and could not get higher than a C on a quiz, an exam, or the final. If you want to watch your GPA tank, be my guest. She could care less if she gives you the material to pass and told me to stop worrying about my C and do better, kind of hard if you don't help me PMat...
19 semesters & 3 degrees, by far she's the worst prof I've ever had. I studied 3x more than any other class, went to office hours weekly, and still worried I wouldn't pass. I asked if she has trick Q's and she said no, then explained to me for 15 mins that she does have trick Q's so the school statistician doesn't think she's giving away A's.
Grade is based on 5 quizzes, 2 exams, and final. All telling detail: a T/F question about mitochondrial enzymes, which wasn't anywhere on the slides. I asked about it, she pointed to a picture of the mitochondria with an enzyme and said we should've known what it meant. She did give me 4 points that I argued for, but she was a terrible prof.
The worst professor I have ever had throughout college. She is very passive-aggressive and gives off a condescending tone all the time. Whenever you email her, she will respond rudely and make you feel dumb. Her quizzes are literally out there to get you. She asks the most irrelevant questions which are fill in the blanks and vague. Avoid her!!
Dont take her. She sends out rude emails and if you email her back she even more rude. Shes not cut out to teach online classes and cant communicate with her students politely. Shes unorganized and she doesnt understand how to use BB. Her quizzes are short answer and confusing af. Just dont take her if you still like genetics.
PMat is a sweetheart & tries her best to make sure all of her students succeed. The class is very difficult but her office hours are extremely accessible and she is prompt through email. With everything online she has allowed open note quizzes which has helped a lot. You can easily be successful but make sure to watch lectures and ask questions.
I got a C+ with a curve & that is my only non A I have ever received in my college career (Im a senior). The tests and quizzes are over the most minute details from the slides or textbook & when you ask her about it, she is so condescending with her response. I wish i never would have taken this class with her - giant mistake.
She is very condescending when it comes to emails. Expects a lot from you and will not take suggestions to help better her class. She always has an excuse. Exams are short answer/matching/written. Complains when students misinterpret her expectations. Overall bad experience. Sad because I do love genetics.
Heres the deal. A lot of people over react when it comes to PMat. Bio 355 is a hard class and requires a lot of work and time, but it is doable. She is very nice in office hours but can sometimes send harshly worded emails. I felt bad that a lot of people reported her and sent mean emails. She is older and trying her best online&shes a good prof
Professor Matthews is a very nice individual, but personally I did not prefer her teaching style during the pandemic. The grade is based off of roughly 3 exams, 5 quizzes, and 3 homework assignments. She posts 1.5-2 hour lecture videos weekly, and her quizzes/exams are extremely specific.
PMat is a more traditional professor who really cares about her students. The class is going to be hard and the tests/quizzes are very specific. However, her lectures are very comprehensive and she makes them engaging. She may come off as passive-aggressive, but she's actually very accommodating. She also has a lot of experience to share.
Professor Matthews is such a sweet and accomplished woman. Her lectures are long but very thorough and interesting to listen to. There isnt much busy work, just assessments of how much you learned from lecture. I personally did not use the book except for the open book exams on rare occasions. Overall a very knowledgeable and nice lady 10/10 :)
in the beginning, she was so sweet then within 1 week she snapped on us bc someone said she forgot to post the lecture as stated on syllabus. exams/quizzes could use notes but all fill in blank & makes it stupid confusing. if u get even the smallest things wrong on any hw its wrong & makes continued ?s wrong since they connect. Very inconsiderate.
Patricia can be nice and funny, but she is a very tough grader and her online lectures do not exactly cover what is on the exams. When quizzes are do you take them between 4-9pm and if you can't during them times you can either take it late at night or take a 0. Emailed the entire class saying we are cheating while most have a C.
I once emailed her about quiz questions that I believed (as well majority of the class) were unfair because she never talked about them in her lecture videos and told her that I was worried about my grade. She told me I was over-reacting (: enough said
Shes a nice lady but her time teaching is coming to an end. All quizzes/tests were open note but she accused individuals of cheating and wouldnt address it with these students individually. She was also very passive aggressive which caused lots of unneeded stress. Some quiz/exam questions were tricky, I would have failed if I took this in person.
P Mat is a decent lady. Her teaching sucks. She accused the whole class of cheating, her quiz questions are incredibly unclear (meaning she asks stuff that she never discusses in lecture). She stated students grades would also be impacted due to "inappropriate emails" sent to her. Overall, she's extremely difficult for no reason.
PMat is nice, but she makes this class extremely difficult for no reason. All the quizzes and exams are open note and I was still struggling. The questions are so specific and sometimes dont follow whats taught in her lectures. The homeworks are even super difficult and she grades them based off correctness instead of completion.
Grading is absolutely brutal. You can study so much and know exactly what you're doing and then still fail an assignment due to the wording of her questions and she will mark you down for the worst reasons. I got marked off because I wrote a genotype twice, due to dyslexia, and still included the other correct answers and still didn't receive cred
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Would not recommend taking her because she failed to accommodate student's needs, was degrading, judgmental, and unprofessional in her emails. Overall, she showed poor teaching skills and it was clear she lost her passion to teach and make learning engaging.
Her quizzes were nothing from the book or what we learned, and would not help during office hours. Grades were only from weekly quizzes, final and midterm, and 4 assignments from the semester. Ended up retaking the course with Nikitin in the summer and ended with a 96% compared to Matthews 78% I had at the WD date from just a change in professors.
For someone who knows how to study and use the textbook, never have I struggled so much due to her confusing wording on quizzes and tests. She expects her students to understand medical wording because she is in the medical field which is unfair. Shes aware that the majority of the class is almost failing or is and doesnt seem to care :/.
do NOT take this teacher under any circumstance. Had her for an online class (originally was in person but she switched it). The quizzes/exams DO NOT match her lecture notes. She expects you to only focus on her class and none others. She teaches you HER way or no way at all. She accused my whole class of cheating and submitted some to the board.
Professor Matthews has been teaching genetics for 30+ years and with that said is doesn't help the teaching what so ever. This was an online class, but she just read off the slides and did a couple of equations on a white board. Grade consists of 3 exams and quizzes a couple assignments. Quizzes are all fill in the blank and worded terribly.
Avoid!! She accuses a lot of people of cheating and makes her exams next to impossible even though they're open notes. The information she provides in lecture doesn't match the exams/homework/quizzes very well and the exam questions are confusing. Attend lecture because she says important info that aren't in her PowerPoint lecture.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had in any level of schooling. She is condescending, rude, and her teaching style is out of date. Her exams and assignments are EXTREMELY difficult and often have topics never discussed in class. In all honesty, it is a shame GVSU still has her employed as it seems many of her reviews echo my own.
AVOID. The lectures were not interesting, and you can barely take notes. On tests and quizzes expect to see a lot of material you've never learned. Also, she'll accuse your whole class of cheating and take it to the board. She is also very condescending when you are trying to get help from her. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Professor Matthews is unwilling to help students when asking questions. Multiple times throughout the semester she told me she couldn't answer my question because it would not be fair to the class. She is very condescending in emails and expects very specific answers on homework and quizzes. She also takes points off for minor things.
Her exams and quizzes are open book, open note, open internet. She is very accessible and flexible outside of class and is more than willing to help. She drops your lowest grade at the end of the semester. Exams are just tricky due to specific wording. Put in moderate effort and you will pass no problem.
Worst professor I've ever had in my life. She was condescending and rude in emails. Exams and quizzes were mostly fill in the blank and she wanted VERY specific answers. The questions on the exams were things she never taught and couldn't be found in the book. AVOID HER.
Don't take this class, she will get you in the position to get a grade W, she has some set of protocols she wants all the answers as per her requirements. Not recommended.
The worst professor I have ever had. Exams were extremely difficult and covered things we did not learn. I loved and understood genetics but still struggled in her class. When asking what I could do differently I was told I could start by learning the English language. Never went over examples so we never knew where we were going wrong! Avoid!!!
I don't have one good thing to say about Prof. Matt. She ruined genetics for me as it was one of my favorite topics until I met her. Her homework and quizzes are nearly impossible to answer as she is very specific, will only accept her version, and won't ever give partial points. They are ALWAYS over things we never discussed.
Worst professor I have ever had. I am very surprised she is still able to teach at GVSU. She was very disrespectful to me when I emailed her with questions about my quiz. She never answers questions about homework. She complains that people don't pass her quizzes literally saying it was disturbing in a blackboard announcement.
This is the most frustrating class I've ever taken. I've attended every class and take notes but she puts problems on the tests and homework that she's never showed us how to do. Most of her quizzes and homework are completely fill in the blank and she looks for very specific answers and has vague wording so you don't know what she's looking for.
Absolute worst prof I've had. Attending lectures and feeling good about the material, isn't enough. Tests are too specific and have odd wording. She has the weirdest grading scale ever so you never know your grade which is probably awful because of the way her tests are. I dropped having a F - retook it with another prof and easily got an A.
