Requires weekly journal entries about history subjects. Very knowledgeable about Native Americans and ask about her many trips, they are interesting. Extremely interesting and more than a fair instructor. Schedule sometimes chaotic but reasonable. I wish more history instructors could have her enthusiasm.
An overall good teacher. She's very helpful and knows what she is talking about. My only issue is the way she pronounces railroad. It drives me nuts, but I know that is a me thing.
Great teacher. Helps you want to learn more about the world. You do need to do your reading and go to classes to do well. I would take her class again if I needed another history. If you don't want to act like an adult you might not want this class.
Hard class but still interesting. Makes you think. You have to read. Testsare over class AND reading assignments both. I did ok in this class. History is hard for me and I made it ok. But, I did work hard.
I had to drop about 3/4 through because I had an emergency but this was a thought provoking class. I like classes that make me think.
The book is written like a middle schooler's essay, and the teacher doesn't teach. Everything is from the book.
Worst history teacher I've had yet and I would not recommend taking her class. Failure to provide enough details as to her grading standards. Treats students as if it is still high school.
Made me want to learn more!
Notes probably the most helpful, but we had to read the Plaque and that felt out of subject of American History.
I learned a lot in this class. If you need help make sure you go to office hours. Dont miss class though. You need the class notes. Not an easy class but a good one.
McGovern is a hard teacher. She is clear to a fault about her grading and lecturing styles. Her lectures are sometimes boring , but she knows A LOT about the subject, so it's best to pay attention. I loved the class even though it was hard.
I found this class to be very interesting. McGovern was simplistic and informative. History is not very stimulating. However, she made it as interesting as possible. I like that she is very serious and to the point. She is fair. She WILL help anyone who comes to her for help! It seems that she truly cares that students LEARN from her class.
I generally like history but find this class rather boring.Students are still treated like high school students. Class is easy enough if you pay attention and do the study guides.
Can't really get notes off of the lecture with out the use of slides.
Everything I studied wasn't on the test. The things she tells you to study isn't on the test so it's useless.
The class is hard. You get by ok if yuou listen and do the work. You need to pay atetention alot. You will study a lot for this class. Dont bother if you dont take notes though.
Don't take her if you want an easy A slacking class. Easy if you aren't terrible at writing assignments. She's relatively friendly and helpful, as long as one takes good notes in class, pays attention to homework and DOES the homework, the student will be fine. She's more of a university professor in ease and expectations of students, like Murphy.
If you pay attention in class, take notes, and do the homework, you will do great on her tests, and for final grade. She bends over backwards to give you options on the tests and extra credit all the time. She makes it extremely interesting and is one of the very best teachers I have ever had. Highly recommend her.
Teacher is not easy, but she is consistent and predictable. She expects good work (take notes, read the book, and turn in homework assignments), but if you put forth the effort she rewards with generous grading. She tends to try to scare people off at first, acting like she's tough, but over time she proves to be kind and willing to work with students who show her they want to succeed.
DO NOT take her for an 8 week class! She might be great for a full semester, but she can't cover everything in 8 weeks, but insists on trying. Your entire grade will be decided by tests & 1 extra credit assignment. You won't get back your test until literally right before the next test. Some questions are vague enough several answers seem be right.
Very boring class. She expects a lot of notes and most of the material she covers is not on the tests. She also doesn't give tests back very quickly. I worked very hard and got a "C". I don't know of anyone in my class who got an "A"
McGovern is a great, albeit strict teacher. She is super clear and really engaging on the subject. Also if you have a thin skin dont take this class, she doesn't pull punches on tough issues (its awesome!) Read the textbook and show up to class and an A is inevitable, provided you do college level work!
Do not take this class online! There is a ridiculous amount of reading. This class should be a 5 credit hour class with the amount of work and reading the teacher makes you do! She is helpful and nice, but that does not make up for the amount of work needed for this class! Ridiculous!!! Very hard when taking other classes too!!
You have to work hard to earn your grade.
Dr. McGovern is fantastic. I learned an incredible amount in her classes and she inspired me to go to graduate school. If you are intelligent and do the work, you will have no problem. If you're an idiot trying to cruise by, you're screwed anywhay. Don't be afraid of reading just do it. Yes, it will be a lot. It's freaking college.
This class was absolutely horrible. I wouldn't reccoment the istructor to anyone. Save yourself the time and money, take it with a different teacher, anyone but her.
This teacher was awesome and extremely helpful! It's not an easy class, but you will learn a LOT! Also, I want this woman to bear my children!
Very hard class. In the hybrid you have to read the book by yourself-she doesn't discuss any homework or test material in the class portion, making it absolutely pointless. No extra credit and she is very late grading homework assignments(months)She also adds additional readings and videos on top of very long chapter readings. Very time consuming.
She is slightly scatter-brained with the dates on tests and homework. Other than that, she is very friendly and will answer any questions you have.
Her class is very time consuming. The reading is A LOT but thats probably normal for history. She is willing to help but only if you have a good attitude and are willing to do the work, if not she doesn't have patience. Her hybred was HARD i would recommend taking her in class if you can.
If you are not good with history, then dont take this class. Her tests were so hard and were not related to the class nor the study guide. I only recommend this professor for students who are going into history as their major.
Horrible teacher. She is a very hard grader. When you think you have something right, it gets an F. She doesn't give any notes, she just sits down in a chair and talks. Giving us no time to copy down anything important. and the text book isn't even that helpful because you don't even know what is important and what is not. don't take her!!
She is a traditional by the book teacher, but not at all boring. I found her class interesting and she is always asking the class questions to keep us involved. If you can read and understand the book while reinforcing the info from the lectures you will get an A.
Okay, you have to read your book for this class or pay attention when she talks. I know people hate reading, but this is college. If you don't like it, don't pay for it. No one is making you go. It's really not that hard. A guy in my class hasn't even bought the book and has a C average just using his lecture notes. Just listen.
The class can be dull, but it could be worse. It's not too difficult if you read the material. However, McGovern tends to go off topic a lot. Be prepared to study on your own.
This class was awful, she never stays on track, complains constantly and is very hard to follow. I love history and I didn't learn anything in this class at all from this teacher. If you are going to take this class just read your book and tune her out.
Basically show up, she's huge on attendance, but I found her lectures useless. What I did was read the textbook. She quizzes alot, no exams, tons of writing. Don't expect help outside of class, you won't get it. If you're good at reading/comprehension, you'll be fine. If you need an engaged teacher, she's not for you.
She is one of the best history teachers in Longview!!! She is very passionate and smart . She sits on her desk and talks a ton but if you read your lectures in the book, do well with the quizes, complete your assignment on time you'll be fine! she will helps if you work hard but she'll be tough if you are lazy!
She talks more about what she knows about the subject and not a lot about whats actually in the book so it makes tests hard. Make sure you do all of the learning curve and video essays to compensate for them. The learning curve will save your butt! Some of the learning curve questions will be on the test so its helpful to do more than the minimum.
She didn't seem to care about anyone but her own stories and life. One of the worse teachers ever. Typical of this school.
Difficult to learn and understand. More reading than can comprehend. We are not robots. Great for someone with a photographic memory.
No clear grading criteria on tests. She is extremely specific and detail-oriented, so you have to clarify to the MAX and include EVERY detail that could possibly be used to answer the question. She is very one-way-of-doing things and robotic. Most annoying voice ever. Go to class but tune her out. Study the book like crazy and do learning curve.
Do the learning curve to prepare for tests, which can cover up to 4 chapters at a time. Tests are very difficult as they cover vast expanses of history. There are essay assignments that are typically 750 words minimum, anything less will not be graded. Very tough class.
She never made clear when things were due which was difficult and stressful. She was so behind in grading towards the end that she just went through and gave people A's on everything.
Do not take her online class. Way too much work for an 8 week class. You use your book like crazy
Lectures are kinda boring so are the videos. The tests are hard and you must read the textbook. I just can't remember what I read in textbooks
She was a pretty good teacher. I feel it's hard to really feel out a teacher online though, but her online class was solid. She got behind on the grading though, but I believe she was dealing with some sort of medical issue, so I don't hate her for that. I'd take her class again.
I procrastinated and had a lot of work at the end of the semester. She let me turn it in late, mostly because I came to her stressed out & crying. Her lectures were only about what we were learning half of the time, and the other half was about politics. She cancelled class a lot due to being sick. I barely learned anything from her or her class.
Her lectures are boring and she uses no emotion when talking . When she lectures she just talks and doesn't engage you AT ALL. Her test are almost impossible to pass if you don't study. I overall hated going to this class.
Get ready to read! Also, when you take tests please note you'll be testing over four chapters at a time with no notes. I did everything she required the class to do and still wasn't passing. I was forced to withdraw so the grade wouldn't affect me. I wouldn't recommend anyone to ever take her class especially if you're paying out of pocket like me
I had her for History 120 and I'm a major History buff, so these classes are pretty simple to me. She's a good teacher with some flaws though. She does suffer from a lot of medical issues and yes, she is a tough grader. I feel as if you do the homework and read the chapters you will pass her tests. All of my tests were online. I love history though
Her lectures can get very boring. She always seems rushed and stressed for no reason. Make sure you do the learning curves, film assignments, and any extra credit she gives! Take a ton of notes from her lectures, as well as the book. If you put in effort, it shouldn't be too bad of a semester.
Lectures and book cover everything on tests. Read and study and do homework and you should be good. If you dont show up to class or do assignments then you wont do good
Helps lots if asked. Understanding. I Missed classes from illness and she helped in catching up and I passed ok
Gives study guides and chapter notes on Blackboard tests are from books and not too hard
This teacher is one of the hardest teachers Ive ever had. She is so hard to follow if you want to learn history just read your textbook and listen to nothing she has to say. At the end of 4 chapters you have a test with no notes or textbook and are required to remember the material.
This is an entry-level course. There were two videos that are an hour long each week. You have to write papers over these. They are not on the tests. You read on your own the book and do a Learning Curve Quiz and turn this in. The tests do not cover direct information in the book. No discussion on Blackboard at all. Totally on your own.
Good luck trying to take this as a summer class at the same time as having a job. Between the amount of time she expects you to spend on the class (17 hours) per week and working 40 hours, it makes me want to go insane.
Very unorganized and unprofessional. Constantly changing assignment requirements after it's assigned. All of the reading and online homework are done outside of class, class is literally just for her to talk. And she'll drop you if you miss two classes. Tests are not reflective of textbook and homework material.
It's never clear what this teacher expects from students. Can't even follow directions and be correct. She will upload assignments and the night before due date email an announcement changing the assignment. 2 video assignments due each week, over 20 questions & a 300 word essay, if you write 299 words, you don't get credit for any of it.
McGovern lectures are very hard to follow. She gives you TOO much information you need to know for the test and quizzes. 2-4 chapters are tested all at once. She goes into detail about every single thing. There is either Film assignments that have a 300 or more word essay due with it or a learning curve. Would not recommend.
I only gave her a one because a zero was not an option. I wish I had read all the terrible reviews for this professor before signing up for her class. Very threatening language used in her emails and she is not timely at all in grading your homework. I would not recommend her unless you enjoy being belittled through email.
By far the worst, this teacher had no patience and she hardly gave room for the students to ask questions in class. Her course work is difficult as well. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone honestly.
Very routine. Assignments assigned on monday and due on sunday. Same material every week, easy to follow. Always took first 10 minutes of class to make sure her students were doing well. The best professor in my first semester of college
This professor is entirely inadequate. I have never experienced an online class so disorganized. I would not recommend taking her course.
SERIOUSLY don't recommend her hybrid class if you want a decent grade. It's awful, she barely prepares us for anything, there's a quiz every week which people don't do well, waaayy too much homework, and everything she sends out is just confusing because she spams the crud out of your email and her announcements, so nothing makes sense. Don't do.

The professor was very strict showing absolutely no sympathy, graded very specifically, was very hypocritical, gave poor instructions, and was overall not a professor I would wish to ever have again. The professor is well known amongst the students for being very difficult and a professor they wish to not have.
At first I didn't think I'd enjoy this class, being new to college the workload looked overwhelming. However now I see she just wants to help us pass! There's a lot of work outside of tests to do so that low test scores won't ruin the grade. Plus, I've learned a lot!
Insane amount of textbook readings and homework, but it was never seen on the tests. The lectures were all over the place because the professor was never prepared for class. They put zero effort into the class and expected us to put in 100%. Professor was late to class almost everyday and took half the class to talk about random things.
I would not recommend taking this class, She thinks she's giving lectures at Harvard. A lot of homework and tests. Her lectures consist of her rambling about random topics and never about anything on the tests and is a very hard grader. If you don't write exactly what she wants to see she gives you an F.
16wk online course, but weekly assignments feel like 8wk course. This teacher is overly critical, even trying to deduct points for stuff like how you write or spell or organize documents and tries to get you on technicalities. Not very concise or reasonable in expectations. Picking this teacher is in my top 5 all time biggest regrets
Homework due twice a week at 5pm. Gave us grades back like 3 times during the semester and would be very critical. Went off on tangents during class that weren't beneficial. She docked points because she didn't read all the work that was submitted and sometimes wouldn't give a reason why. Would take it again only because it could've been worse
8 week summer course. due dates 2x per week. which is actually beneficial bc it keeps you from getting behind. Not a lot of work just very time consuming. watch 2 films per week in place of lecture. Understanding woman as long as you communicate. tough grader but gives good feedback how to improve. Would 100% take her class again.
I learned more in this class than I have in any other class before. It really took my scholarship to another level. It you work full time it is difficult to balance because its alot of work and she does grade papers a little late so you learn the hard way if you have been doing something wrong but great teacher. Im thankful.
She is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. I mean she would go on for 30 minutes out of our 50 minute class about the most random stuff. All she did was lecture but never let us write down notes. Overall the class felt very unfair. Her grading also felt very biased. If we didn't write it exactly how she would write it automatically point off.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. Extremely passionate about history and very relatable. She wants you to love it as much as she does, and she's successful at that! She sparked curiosity in me like no instructor ever has. The assignments in her course are pretty much effortless and sometimes fun. I always looked forward to her lectures.
Would NOT recommend this class to anyone. She goes off on many random tangents and almost never lectures, she would be late for class and cancel probably more than actually holding class. Claims everyone is plagiarizing, and doesn't give any real feedback, I've had assignments from the begging of the semester that have still yet to be graded.
Very strict with things. Always watching YouTube Videos.
Very large tests covering several units at once, hard to remember multiple months worth of information in full detail. Requests a lot of detail when answering test questions. Would prefer more frequent but smaller tests when the relevant information is fresh in mind.
She's is very passionate about history and mentions a lot of fun facts, but unfortunately this leads her off topic. It is very hard to follow her lectures and the smallest of details appear on her tests. You have to study weeks in advance to get a passing grade. Be prepared to prioritize this class if you sign up for it, otherwise you will fail.
Her tests quiz you over the smallest details ever. Good luck studying.
Worst class I have ever taken. She would go on tangents about things that had nothing to do with what we were talking about in class. The homework assignment were old photographs of news paper clippings that were extremely hard to read. The tests were super long and half of the questions were stuff we never went over. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Do not take a class with her, I was lucky enough to steer away two friends from having her the following semester I had her. It was the hardest class I have ever taken not because of the subject because of the teacher. So much readings and homeworks, which the homeworks were pictures of old newspapers with tiny font which made it impossible read.
Always ill-prepared, we spent the first 20 minutes of class waiting for her to get prepared. She would be absent or tardy for class without informing. She would also expect us to stay late on multiple occasions. She had no care for anyone's time. The lecture was so difficult to follow, that it would not go linearly and go off on pointless tangents.
assignments are very confusing and the information you need is in a bunch of different places instead of all in one place. due dates are also incorrect. you have to find those in many different places as well. she's not real clear about assignments. not very good with communications with help. she won't make clear what you don't understand. .
DO NOT take a class by this professor! The textbook was 80 pages a chapter. Gives PPs that are 20 pages and outlines that are 10 each week. Told students many times that she "wants to spend the weekend with her husband & won't answer emails or messages." Spams with class emails. Would be better for everyone if she did weekly test for each chapter.
Do not take this class with this teacher. She is not prepared and is very distracted. She often talks too much about her personal life other than class material. Her exams are very hard and detailed. If you don't study you will fail. If you apply yourself and study hard, you will pass.
There is a lot of homework, but it is easy and takes less than an hour per week. She is very willing to work with students. It is a lecture-heavy course. We only did 2 tests all semester. If you put in the effort, you can pass with flying colors.
Incredibly unorganized, she talked about her husband the entire time and spammed Canvas to make announcements daily. Graded late, you don't get feedback, yet expected to improve on discussion boards?!?!? Take legit any other professor.
Yaps way too much. Doesn't help with anything
By far the worst professor I've had. This is an online course, she makes a ton of announcements last minute changing things & when you ask for clarification she's rude with her responses. Doesn't actually teach anything in her online course. Exams have crazy detailed questions that aren't relevant to any of the material that you study. It's so bad.
She is weeks behind in her lectures compared to where we are in the homework, cuz she is constantly talking about irrelevant things. She Is lazy with grading and she doesn't even know what assignments she is giving through Cengage. She is always late and gives last minute announcements on canvas that directly effect her students. wouldn't recommend
Sloppy course and always late to class. Be ready to study!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! Terribly managed course and made test extremely hard and the powerpoint don't help be ready to write note because if you don't you will not pass. I utterly express again to save your gpa don't take her class. Sloppy class structure, just in general don't take this I'm saving you from a bad grade!!!!!!!!!
Please run and withdraw while you can. The professor told us we were always behind when we weren't. She assigned 10-20 assignments a week. She will belittle you when you try asking a question in person or through email. The only good thing she did was change the grading scale for the test so we could pass.
She talks the whole period and does not use any powerpoints. For our class, the homework was like 5 chapters ahead of what she was teaching us in class. The tests were all multiple choice but still difficult.
Classes are basically just lectures and that's it. Lots of short quiz-like assignments every week, as well.
Her lectures are extremely disorganized and hard to follow. She dives deep into tangents and side stories and glosses over the important parts, resulting in all classes being significantly behind. Assigns busywork and pointless group projects that waste our time. Test are multiple choice (mostly) but cover things that arent even important
Online course. Almost every assignment was not graded for 4 weeks +. Her announcements constantly contradicted assignment instructions. She said you must use feedback from prev assignment for the next or you get points deducted. This is impossible because the next thing was due before you got feedback/grade. Test questions often did not make sense.
I liked her a lot
She grades obnoxiously and it takes forever to receive a grade. She did not have our grades available for us to see until the end of the semester. She talks the entire class every single class and goes over time every single time. She sends passive aggressive announcements out and you cannot even get a hold of her. I absolutely do not recommend!
This professor is not very organized but she expects you to be. She treats you like a misbehaved high schooler and it gets pretty annoying quickly. She also is pretty spacey and gets lost on tangents not really relevant to the course. It's not a super difficult class, just annoying lol.
There is not enough space to describe how awful this class is! She goes on side tangents a lot, to the point where we were more than 5 chapters ahead in homework. Tests don't make much sense and are rarely over stuff in the book, just over stuff she thought she went over in class but forgot. She also has many errors in her tests! Grades awful!
horrible horrible horrible, do not take this class with her. she is very rude and is lacks human empathy. the class itself should be easy you would think. she makes it more difficult then it should be. gave me a zero because she refused to open my assignment.. do not take this class with her seriously
We did Cengage homework from the textbook, with a unit due every week. But she rambled during every lecture, wasting time re-stating the obvious. So we would test on the early frontier, with the homework from last night being about the Great Depression. So I never did well on the tests because the homework going over the unit was due last month.
I was an online student having to do group projects. Wouldn't get back to me via emails for at least 4 days (sometimes 10). There was a test over every four chapters (big chapters) and they asked very niche questions. Overall, the assignments weren't hard, however the tests were close to impossible. Wouldn't recommend.
She was late every day, disrespectful towards students, and her teaching was very jumbled, hard to follow. I already struggled with history and this made it worse. Assigns group projects but doesn't actually take and notice to the surveys she forces you to do. I rated a group member low and then were the only person who moved to my second grouping
Very difficult to work with, trailed off a lot
very messy but very interesting
bad teacher
Not good at staying on track for lectures. Spent a month and a half on one chapter and EVERYBODY failed. Wouldn't give us things to study and just told us to read the textbook.
Terrible teacher. The only way to pass the class is to write down every word that she says in her HR lecture and study all of it because she doesn't tell you what you need to know for tests. Only advice given for tests is "read the book" and study the book? Zero guidance for what needs to be studied for the tests, and EVERYBODY failed it.
Do NOT take this class. She is super unorganized, late to every class, doesn't stay on track for lectures, doesn't provide study guides or an outline, doesn't post due dates, and is incredibly insensitive. One of the worst classes I've ever taken. The lectures are super confusing and do not go in order.
Overall, she is not bad, but she is not good either. Her class structure is a mess, and she is really unorganized. Reading will be your top priority for this class, and there is no study guide for tests. On the plus side, she's pretty nice. But if you want to save your GPA, then I don't recommend taking her.
terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Her class structure is the most disorganized class I have ever been apart of. When she uses the book she never gives out page numbers and expects us to just memorize everything by heart. She also is really condescending for some reason. I would dread absolutely every day.
The most unorganized awful teacher if that I've ever had in my life she was so bad we are waiting for her to arrive and it's the FINAL how are we not on time to our own final don't take save the money and time also test never relate
