Very good instructor. She gives alot of work but if you show up everyday and study you are guaranteed an A. Her test and quizzes are based off her study guide. She doesn't use the textbook at all. I would definitely take her class again. Plus she is smoking hot...

This is a very hard class but with that being said, it was my first bio class with no chem and I got a C. I studied by but off, if I didn't have kids and work, a B would have been attainable. She wants you to succeed and is ALWAYS available to all of her students. I used the tutoring center often which was a big help. Her TA's are also very helpful

Same instructor from Saddleback College. VERY GOOD instructor. Lecture attendance not mandatory but highly recommended as she draws exams from them. NO TEXTBOOK. Lab: must understand what you are doing or you will find exams to be hard. She ask very specific questions on Lab. NOTE: UTILIZE school tutors (YEN is great!) & bring recorder to class

Dr. Oertel is great! She expects a lot, but you get out what you put into her class. She is very approachable & responds quickly to emails. Exams are fair & largely based on her lecture outlines.

If I could I would take the rest of my bio classes with her! Her exams are not hard if you attend lecture, pay attention, and study her outlines. IHadABlast!

Dr. Oertel's class is no cakewalk. It requires a good deal of initiative on your part. The exams require that you not only memorize what is gone over in class, but that you understand it, because she'll ask questions in a way that ensures that you do. That being said, she has a great personality and plenty of good stories to tell.

Dr. Oertel is one of my all time favorite teachers. Her tests are very fair, and based solely off of her lectures. She explains things very well and by the time class is over, you will understand what she taught. She is very easy to contact for help as well. The context for the class is not easy- you will have to study- but Dr.Oertel makes it fun.

Do use a recorder in her class and make use of her lecture review outlines! I reviewed each lecture she gave, didn't open my book once and still got an A. She is such a great instructor and really makes the class fun and interesting. She had such an impact on me that I'm now considering a career in Microbiology.

Dr. Oertel by far is the best teacher I have had.Shes' a great instructor.Puts up lecture notes on BB for you to print out and follow which makes things easier.She is there to he;p and provides office hours. This class is challenging and does require studying but I mean come on you're in college you can't possibly expect to have an A handed to you.

Professor Oertell is a great teacher. She has good intent, is very passionate about Micro, and wants her students to learn and excel. Micro is not easy. You have to study and put in the time. Its hard material. She explains everything, and is very detailed. If you are weak in an area, she will make time to help you during office hours.

Awesome teacher. Her lecture is basically an elaborate version of her powerpoint, which she posts on the blackboard. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those can have time to study.

Fantastic instructor! She is very helpful with any questions you might have. Do not take this class if you are not dedicated or have time to study; requires a lot of studying on your part. Great lecturer and really makes the subject interesting! This class is NOT easy (esp. if you haven't taken bio.) Her tests are pretty fair and she gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Having a helpful lab teacher helps, too! I would say make sure you have a lot of time to study for this class and don't be cheap and not buy the book.

Dr. Oertel is an extremely helpful teacher. This class was super easy in my opinion. Not challenging, just do the homework and study for the exams. There are tons of opportunities for extra credit. I got a solid A.

This is to the person who said to not be cheap and to buy the textbook, you do not really need the textbook because she gives you study guides and the tests are off of them. I would say study really good for the final because it is about diseases. But she drops the lowest score including the final!

I have never taken bio and she is by far one of the best teachers i have ever had! Her tests are hard but she offers extra credit and a lot of help prior to the test! I HIGHLY recommend her she is awesome! Her lectures are interesting as well because she puts personal studies to them to help you remember the material! :))

A great teacher for a difficult class. She is very organized and gives students plenty of tools to help study. She tests off her lectures and has study guides to help. She is available in lab and helpful with clear answers to your questions. There is a lot of material to cover and your need to study for a good grade.

Go to class. Do study guides. Record lectures. Buy the book to do online assignments (not mandatory, but if you complete them you can drop 1 of 4 tests and replace with highest test score). I did not take the final and got an A. TONS of info on tests. Great professor. Time consuming class, skip if you cant devote time to studying. Lab hard too.

Awesome Instructor! She is very intelligent and experienced. I love that she always put me to the test and think outside the box whether in discussion or in lab. It can be an easy class just do the work, take notes from lecture and record cause she wont repeat more than once. Lab is super fun and challenging.

Always attend class, entire diagrams that she draws and sentences she says will be on the test, guaranteed. She's very attractive, very funny, and is willing to be your friend if you're a good student. You can tell she's passionate and almost always has a relevant story to the subject. She gives plenty of opportunity to pass, ec available!

Her class IS NOT EASY. Do not expect an east A. You cannot be lazy in this class at all! This will probably be one of your most time consuming classes so be careful! Dr. Oertel is the greatest professor I've ever taken. I did not regret taking her class for micro, she's wonderful, very smart, kind person. She helps you when you need help in class. She's sincere to her students, and provides extra help for the others. I love her class and if there are more classes under her name, i will not hesitate to take it!

Smart, Kinds, and very fair to her students. You can tell she's very passionate about students getting a good grade in her class. If you take her class be sure to put a lot of time in studying; she teaches over PPT, record her lectures, come to tutoring session, and use study outlines she posts online. She was by far the best professor. She explains things so that you can understand them. She doesn't try to trick you. she's totally straightforward. The tests weren't easy, but if you pay attention, she'll give you everything you need. She keeps you interested and she has the cutest sense of humor. And yes, I gave her "hot." She's adorable!

First of all, if you want an easy class, this class is not for you! Dr. O is amazing!she knows her stuff really well, helpful and encouraging, funny, consistent of her class syllabus and very strict on her policy in class..no late submission is accepted! On this class, you will learn a lot from her so i suggest that practice, practice, and practice

Oertel is AWESOME. she runs her lab like I wish all micro labs were managed. She writes the instructions crystal clear. She explains everything so well, and the lab is the best part. Take her and enjoy it cause I have a feeling all labs aren't this organized.

Exams off lecturesPP's, refer to textbk for broader knowledge, record lecture, form a study group early on, & be prompt to class. Made me enjoy micro again.

Professor O is an incredible instructor. Her tests may be a bit hard, but if you study everyday you will pass. Didn't even touch the textbook.

One of the best professors I've had thus far. Her lectures are clear and follow the syllabus. She provides lecture outlines and PowerPoints and a majority of the tested information comes directly from them. Students are required to do a fair amount of work but it's definitely reasonable. She teaches with passion. Don't hesitate taking her class.

Microbiology is a hard subject but she is worth taking i definitely recommend her lets you record!

I hated micro but she made the class interested and fun. Willing to help her students and all her exams are straight from the power point!!! Lab was amazing.... she is very detailed and organized which made lab a lot easier to understand. Would take her again in a heart beat!! Exams are 6-7 chapter long so you cannot slack off. Would def take again

Oertel is one absolutely fine, and amazing professor. In every aspect of teaching you can imagine, she excels at. She's lively and easy on the eyes. Definitely recommended for someone who actually wants to enjoy learning this amazing subject!

"I am here to encourage you, not to discourage you;" thus, she generously offers extra credits for those who struggled. YOU WILL LEARN. Love the way Dr. Oertel structures her classes! Had her for 2 bios in same semester and had great experiences in both! Her classes were challenging but very doable. I regret being a little shy and didn't come to her for extra help. Tests were strictly based on ppt; she's very animated so lectures weren't boring! Would take her again even it's P.E.!

She is the best bio teacher that I have ever taken. I took Bio211 before nut I dropped it because my previous prof made bio stuffs so complicated, confused and nonsense. Prof Oertel is different. She makes biology much more interesting and easier. Her power point is super clear and easy to understand. High recommendation for her class.

She is enthusiastic about teaching and makes lectures interesting to listen to. You definitely have to take time to study but tests are straightforward with no surprises. Wonderful professor who wants all the students to do well. Clear lectures and powerpoint notes, so the textbook is not needed. Lecture exams are straightforward, but they are from 6-7 chapters and there are no study guide. Plenty of in-class, homework, extra credit assignments. Lab is fun, but the lab manual (not written by her) is not clear.

Dr. Oertel is a top notch teacher. Amazing Power Points that easy to follow. Tests are mostly based on them, so NO surprises. Material is hard in Micro, but she makes it very understandable. Open to any type of questions. Lots of work, but doable. Her study guides are very helpful, as I would say 90% of the SG content will be on your test.

In terms of her professional abilities, Dr. Oertel is organized and her lectures are based on power point slides. She provides study outlines for each chapter and it is extremely useful for exam. However, 90% of material on the study outline will be covered during the exam. Therefore, the power point lecture slides can also be used as a study guide

No more than 5 hws, easy points- last one is in groups. Tests are based on ppt and study outlines, study both!! Break the ice and ask ur lab members to study together. ALWAYS ask to see your exam and quiz, we all make mistakes even her. Towards the end you have a research paper and group presentation. She tells u exactly what she wants. I loved it!

Dr. Oertel is a great professor. Her lectures are amazing. Her teaching materials are clear and very organized. I learned a lot of good skills in her lab. She also care for students. If you understand the lectures, you will surely get good grades.

Heavy on material. Specially the last month of the semester(Exam 4, lab/lecture final,unknown paper, oral presentation) Don't be fool about her personality. She doesn't care. She's only there to do her work. And you can tell because she's always on a hurry. A good professor will be the opposite of this. Not my typical professor.

Not an easy A, always ALWAYS pay attention to when professor starts drawing on the board, that material will be included on your test in a question form. Attending lab is crucial to pass the lab portion, take good notes, tests are based off of ppt's, the unknown project is hard, so don't mess up!

There are many positive reviews about Dr. Oertel but you don't get it until you actually sit at her lectures for a full semester. I mean she is an example of a perfect teacher. She is talented, and can transfer her knowledge to her students very easily. The lectures are organized, and the exams are solely based on them. I recommend taking her class

She is a tough grader but really knowledgeable. If you are looking for a class to coast in this isn't it. Her tests are very difficult and studying is a must. She is a professor that is extremely thorough! She really takes the time to teach you everything you need to know in detail. She is the best professor I have ever taken! Her tests are tough! So make sure you do all the outlines and take notes of all her drawings she does on the chalkboard! Study! Study! Study!

100 percent recommend this professor if you are the type of person who is on top of your game. You can get an A if you work for it. Record the lectures and memorize every word, her lectures are dopesauce. She gives you all the tools you need to be successful, if you don't get a good grade its because you didn't study enough. Make sure you record her lecture and use the study outlines to prepare exam. She wants you to understand as well as memorize. Textbook is useful for understanding some fundamental concepts and process, as she may start her lecture assuming you already read the book. Lab is a wild card depends on who is the instructor, and can be intensive

Love Dr. Oertel! She 100% cares about her students and wants the best for them. You can tell she has passion for teaching through sitting in one of her lectures. Definitely not an easy A though, for sure have to put in the work. Also as previously mentioned you can get lucky/unlucky depending on your lab instructor so research your lab instructor.

She is excellent; she takes care of her students. She loves Biology and knows how to makes you do as well. I strongly recommend her. Be prepared for taking note, most probably, what she said in her lecture will be in your next quizzes.

Her tests are next level. You need to pay extra attention to her lectures, record if you can. Labs are all right but she has really high expectations. Overall she is an extremely tough teacher and you go over a lot of topics. She is a hard teacher, its not impossible but man does she work your butt off.

Oertel is very knowledgeable in micro and it shows. This course requires alot of time & effort. You must be disciplined to be successful in this course. She'll put you in your place if you're not on top of your stuff. Despite that, her lectures are very good and she's understanding. The workload becomes heavy towards the end, be ready for that.

She teaches really well. If you listen to her lectures and lab really well, you'll be good. She covers most of the things that you need in the exam. But the tests are heavy. Memorization is important for this course! Her study guide is helpful. You need to put in so much effort but I think it's worth it. She is understandable to students!

A good teacher, found myself easily understanding and enjoying her lecture videos. Nice personality however she is strict with her grading. Do all your work, study well and all I can say is the grade you get will be the grade you deserve. Don't count on any extra credit, so you will have to try from the start if you want to achieve an A.

Dr. Oertel is very disciplined and very dedicated to instruction. She places a lot of effort into her lectures and labs and expects that same output from her students come exam time. For the A students, this is not an easy A it took more effort than what was put into bio 239 and 249; it took me to a near breaking point. exam heavy and group project

This is a 5 unit class. Get ready to WORK. The material builds and stems from your prereq courses. Dr. Oertel is a great professor that will help you any way she can. Dont slack off on studying because she WILL call you out on it. Very challenging class, but overall very fascinating.

I took a fully online course with Professor Oertel. The work mostly consists of quizzes, based off the lectures. Her lectures are engaging and she teaches well. The final and midterms were based off the other quizzes, so easy pass. She offers extra credit at the end of the semester too. :)

P. Oertel is such a sweet and passionate professor. Her class is pretty difficult, so make sure not to take any other hard classes. This is a great class to prepare you for nursing, she emphasizes clinically relevant info. if your grade is suffering, stick through it because the projects will save you, trust.

Professor Oertel was the BEST teacher ever. I loved her and would love to take other Bio classes with her. She knows her stuff and I learned alot. This is not an easy class so be ready to study. She gives you the right tools to do good in class. I also watched all her recorded lecture on youtube prior of her lectures so I was always prepared.

Dr. Oertel is very intelligible, she will always show up to class prepared and is ready to lecture with passion. I studied her powerslides mostly for her tests but I did put in 30 hours a week on this course! This class means business so make sure you put in the work and you should do just fine!

Firstly, I really like Dr. Oertel. She's very knowledgeable and approachable. BUT exams are a nightmare! The mean score of our first exam was 65%... yikes. The grade is based almost entirely on the exams and there is no extra credit. Extremely difficult to get an A. Don't take any other classes when you take this class.

I took micro while also taking physiology. (passed both with B's). The effort / hardwork you're willing to put into studying will reflect your overall grade. This subject in general is not easy. Get ready to study for hours/ days! Her recorded lectures were super helpful for studying and lecture slides. Don't be afraid to ask questions! :)

Dr. Oertel is the best. She is knowledgable on everything she talks about and wants you to succeed. You will need to put in work for this class but extremely doable if you are disciplined and want the A. Extra credit available to make up for bad test scores. Rewatching lectures is a must. Exams are so fair and easier than they could be.

Dr.Oertel does an amazing job at teaching Microbiology. She is very clear on her instructions and teaches students very well on how to use lab material along with how to grasp lecture information and make connections. Always made me feel comfortable to ask questions and to approach her when I needed help. Overall, I really enjoyed her class

Dr. Oertel easily made microbiology one of my favorite classes I've ever taken. Her lectures are thorough and entertaining, and she makes sure to answer any questions students have. Her office hours were right after lecture, so always take up this opportunity to catch up on anything you didn't understand and review your exams here.

Microbio is a hard class in general. definitely stepping stone into the healthcare. Dr. Oertel is very knowledgeable & wants you to succeed. Exams are from the lecture slides. People want things handed to them instead of working hard for the grade they want. This is college, if you want to succeed, you need to put in the work and study.

Dr.Oertel is a really tough Proffesor but is really smart and knowledgeable when I had questions she never made me feel dumb. Exams where really hard and she expected a lot from us, but she did help me feel really prepared for getting into the medical field. as long as you study in advance you'll be fine!!!
