great teacher, works best with Tyler
The thing that i hate about the class is that they never explain why.
Fast Paced, Quick Writter and Explains, TRIES to be Friendly Helpful.
One of my best teachers yet. Really offsets Dr. Tyler's insane puns, a comedic tagteam. You'll laugh, you'll cry, most importantly you'll learn calculus.
Great teacher! her and tyler go great together.
very good teach always willing to help you out
Wonderful teacher.. really passionate about subject, which is hard to do about calculus. Definitely not an easy class, and they expect a lot of their students, but do a great job of helping everyone be successful.
can write on a chalkboard faster than anyone i have seen. i find myself not recognizing my own notes.you can't think, just write.
The class is definately not a cake walk, but it is a class where if you actually pay attention and study youll do well. The best way to do good in this class, is not to study the homework, but to study the old tests.
really easy class
No Comments
I understand her much better than Tyler. I honestly think that all Tyler's job is is to stand in as comic relief and erasing the board. She's really nice and duzn't mind helping out students.
Anyone who says calculous is easy is lying. Calculous is difficult, hands down. Tyler and Ralston make calculous managable as a class, but you have to put in a lot of effort. Be prepared to study, and you'll learn your mathematics.
Way harder to understand than Tyler. I think she can't think down to our level.
Easiest way to learn calculus, just be sure to keep up and don't sleep or skip, then you are in deep trouble.
Are you guys nuts. EAC is hard as****. She Tag Teams with Tyler and the amount of content is insane. Homework and tests are overwhelming with content.Truly a class to get people to not to be an engineer. Work load is insane but if your dedicated its doable. Just finished my masters in CECS and all EACs were the hardest classes i took Good Luck.

The material isn't as hard as a lot of people make it out to be, but you can't afford to miss very many classes or you'll get left behind. You can't come into the class without a basic understanding of the early concepts either. The people that have to take it shouldn't have too much trouble.
Don't fall behind. Otherwise easy.
She is a good teacher, but she goes through material faster than any other teacher I have ever had. I thought the EAC classes were hard. You have to go to class, do all the homework, and study hard to do well on the tests. Very challenging. Ralson & Tyler make sure you learn the material.
Shes pretty laid back and the class is cake
Tyler slows her down a little, but the class is still very fast. She writes on the board so quikly that I have learned to stop thinking and just write. By far the most challenging class I have ever had. Tests are HARD. Still, Tyler will take time to go over material 1 on 1 if necessary to help out.
This class is a very rigorous. Not like calc in high school. Because of the enormous lectures, there is no one-on-one interaction, and much of the learning is do-it-yourself. The exams are some of the toughest. You will not pass without a good deal of work.
She will make you work VERY hard, but she's actually nice if you ever get to talk to her. In class though she's all business.. and she hates it when people surf the web or talk when she's teaching
Knows alot about what she is teaching but not helpful in showing "tricks" to solve problems. Automatically thinks we are all absorbing when we are puzzled. Does not give much info
Awesome teacher, the class was hard but its calculus and she makes it doable.
She's been doing this for a very long time. It seems like since she knows she knows it she expected us to get understand it right off the bat, which is not the case. If you get this class or any other calculus class with her, study hard, use your book, take good notes, and find some friends to study with and do homework. Good luck.
She seems harsh, but she's actually really nice. Just don't try to talk in class! Behave yourself and pay attention, and you'll do just fine. Note: Calculus is the weed-out class. She and Dr. Tyler take that job seriously.
Ralston goes fast and has high expectations. She may be intimidating, but she is actually really really nice. I personally loved her as a professor. Tyler was harder for me to follow because he doesn't use his computer as much and instead points at the screen, but together they're a great pair. Just don't talk or text during their class!
Don't be too scared by the stories, Dr. Ralston is actually an excellent professor. Her lectures to me were mostly easy to follow, although some days she does go a bit faster than she probably should. I prefer Dr. Tyler in a group setting but Dr. Ralston is much more helpful one on one.
Intimidating as she may be to most people, Dr. Ralston is an extremely nice lady who will do just about anything she can to help you out. She does lecture very quickly, but to people like me who are fairly familiar and good at calculus you might prefer this over Tyler's slightly slower (though still breakneck) pace. Bottom line: Ralston is great.
Dr. Ralston is a great professor. She'll do anything for her students, and is always easy to talk with, in and out of the class (which can't be said about Dr. Tyler, the other half of the ENGR duo). If you ever have questions, ask her, intimidating as she may seem at first.
Professor Ralston and Tyler are honestly some of the best teachers I've ever had. They teach the class in a very efficient and effective manner, and made learning Calculus easier. I would STRONGLY advise against taking any other teacher. To pass the class you need to do your homework and study, and you should attend class. Otherwise it's not bad.
Shes a really good teacher and always willing to help. She can be a little tense and intimidating, but take the time to know her and she is a sweet heart.
I had Dr. Ralston for ENGR 101, 102, 201 and Differential Equations. She is a great teacher that is very passionate about her job. She is also very nice. I missed a test once and went to her office, she was extremely understanding and considerate. She is one of Speed School's best professors!
ehh... she's ok
She does a better job at teaching the material than her counterpart but still makes Calculus not an enjoyable subject. Had math before and what the speed school is teaching isn't math it is more of can you copy what I showed you. IF you want a real math course go to a different school
Dr. Ralston is a very nice lady who knows her calculus. Very helpful but goes very fast in the lectures and can be hard to keep up with especially when you are unfamiliar with the content that is being gone over. I'll be taking ENGR 201 with Dr. Ralston and Dr. Tyler in the summer.
Great professor I learned a lot. Show up to class and DO ALL THE HOMEWORK and it isn't a terrible class if you do that
She is stuck up, answers questions as if your stupid if you don't know the answer. Goes way to fast and has a very poor sense of humor. No office hours and makes the class as hard as humanly possible
Not helpful, mumbles into the microphone when it is on.
She is very stuck up, not very helpful at all. Class is a weed out class so it's ridiculous hard. Doctor Tyler runs the show and she just helps out.
Expects a lot. Fast-paced. Strict & businesslike in class, friendly & accommodating 1-on-1. Works very hard & cares about students. Can at times overreact. Took 4 classes under her & worked as a grader for her classes for 3 years after, & I have immense respect for her. Work hard in her class--it will impact the rest of your Speed School experience
No, no, no. Just no. Never take Ralston if you can avoid it.
Ralston is one of the sweetest people I have met. If you have any problems, she'll be glad to help. If you ever need to meet her, just e-mail her and she'll set aside whatever time to help you out. Love her to death. This course was difficult. You need to understand why things work the way they do and research the material outside class to do well.
Its very clear that her and Dr. Tyler know the material well and have worked together for a long time. She can come off as a little intense but shes just very serious about the class. you'll have a test and an exam every Tu and Thu, but do the homework and use the practice exams and youll be ok. And if you go to class you get 10 bonus on the exam
Tough class but she is there for you if you need help
Her pairing with Dr. Tyler is amazing and makes for many amusing stories in class. Class is very difficult though, with exams every week. However, with hard work it is doable.
I can't really put my mixed feelings into words. The curriculum and expectations are so impossible at times that I want to just hate the entirety of Speed school. At the same time the insanity pushed me to achieve new academic levels with 4 semesters on Deans list so far. But to be honest, this style of education should be illegal and changed ASAP.
Class is a weedout class. They move very fast and it's hard to keep up. Have to teach yourself most of the material. Stuck up and not very helpful. Better off taking somebody else even though Tyler writes the tests.
Dr. Ralston has the potential to be a decent professor, but has fallen short every opportunity. Her inconsistent scheduling, frequent cancellations, late grading, volatile due dates, and strong political/sociological bias make this the one professor at Covenant I would never take again.
Extremely mixed emotions. You can tell she knows what she's talking about and what she's doing, but is stuck up and holier than thou because of it. In terms of notes, you never have to question if she's confused or getting problems correct. The class is well-developed, but she doesn't like to answer questions. Hard to relate to, but not terrible.
The most caring teacher I've ever had. Cares for all of her students. If you ever feel like you're lost really don't be scared to go up to her and talk and even go to her office hours. She will take care of you seriously. DE is pretty miserable but a nice teacher like this makes up for it
Rather than spending lectures on mastering the basics of each concept, Ralston and Tyler expect you to teach yourself the basics and spend class time on advanced examples which require mastery of the basics to know. The worst thing is that every Tuesday you're required to take not 1 , but 2 tests in 90 minutes. You rarely have enough time.
This course is a much faster pace than high school math. There is a weekly test which means a unit every week. Because there are so many tests its easier to recover from mistakes or difficult units. She teaches well and talks clearly however because of the fast pace can be hard to keep up with. Your final grade is curved and lowest test is dropped
I loved the calc series and Dr. Ralson made the EVERYDAY 8 am enjoyable. She is always smiling and happy to help and answer any questions. She is very patient and kind. Her office hours feel friendly and inviting. She structured the class and calculus is no joke, but she does help in any way possible. Go to review sessions and office hours.
Dr. Ralston is a wonderful professor. She is very willing to help students understand the material and is continually pushing to ensure that each student receives the instruction they need. She does have a lot of students so you may need to reach out, but if you do, she is always willing to help.
I took Dr. Ralston for the entire calc sequence and have immense respect for her and Dr. Tyler. She is an excellent educator and truly cares about all her students. The classes were challenging but always very doable with proper studying. Her interactions with Tyler are very funny and made the 8AM classes worth it. Take her if you can!
Lectures are very poorly produced, concepts discussed don't match up with homework content, and tests require every single step to be properly documented
Dr. Ralston is, quite simply, an amazing human. Sure the class is a bit challenging, but she genuinely cares about all of her students and will take the time to help you if you have any problems at all. 10/10.
She has met with me to help me understand the material and completely go ver old tests. She cares so much about her students even though the material is very challenging for most of them. Such a sweetheart.
Dr. Ralston. One half of the dynamic duo that is Ralston and Tyler. An intellectual baller. Has such a kind heart. TRULY cares about student's mental wellbeing and success in the class.
Dr. Ralston is quite possibly one of the most hardworking people in the world. She always puts her students first and aims to help them as much as possible. Calc 2 is known as the hardest in the sequence, but she gave us all the material we needed to be successful. She TRULY loves calculus and wants her students to be engaged and interested.
Dr. Ralston is so sweet. Calculus is horrible, but she makes herself very accessible to the students. If you do not do well with conventional lecture style classes THIS IS NOT YOUR BEST OPTION. This class is hard and it will require diligence no matter what professor you have.
Dr. Ralston is a sweet angel carrying you through the war torn battlefield of calculus. If you talk to her, she will try her best to help you out. She will even check on you when she sees you. She wants you to succeed. That being said, this call is a conventional lecture so if you need extra assistance office hours are your best bet.
Dr. Ralston cares about her students success, which is made clear if you put in effort. Her lectures are fast, but important; a lot of the homework problems and test questions are directly taken from the examples she works out in class. She is intimidating at first, but if you put in work, you'll notice she is a great professor.
Dr. Ralston is an extremely caring professor teaching a tough class. If you're a student looking to apply yourself and dedicated to improving in math, then she's great. If you aren't the fast pace of the class with tests every week will prove it to you. As long as you can handle the pace, she is a great professor for math.
This class is probably the hardest class most speed school students will take, but Dr. Ralston is such an amazing and kind professor that it makes the class better. She is willing to work with students on their needs. She even responds to questions on the weekends. While this class is extremely hard, she really makes it a special experience.
Dr. Ralston truly cares about the success of her students and will go out of her way to facilitate your learning. I've had her for Engr 101 (B+), 102(B+), and now 205(C+). The classes are curved so if you apply yourself, do the work, and study for tests, a passing grade is all but guaranteed. Getting an A will be challenging without dedication.
Dr. Ralston is a great professor teaching a hard class. Its a difficult class, especially for incoming freshman, but if you study and do the homework, you shouldn't worry about passing.
Stuck up but she is nice sometimes if you message her. difficult class but calc 2 makes this class look like a cake walk
I took Dr. Ralston for ENGR 101(A),102(A), &201(B+). She is one of the most caring teachers I had. Her lectures are fast but important. She may seem intimidating/strict in class but don't be afraid to email her or ask for help as she is very nice & will help anyone who asks. If you do the homework and have good study routine, you will pass.
1. Lectures are inadequate for tests. 2. Tests are about memorizing notation (98th percentile ACT/SAT students have
The issue is more with the class than the professor. Basically two class days that she has to cram an entire unit into before each test. The test formats are confusing with mostly being the last unit and only 1/4 the current unit. Everyone I know is failing, but the professor is good at teaching, given the class. The online videos are lifesaving.
ENGR 101 is a challenging course. While Ralston has good knowledge of the material she teaches, her grading on tests is very strict and confusing. Even if you have the correct answer, if your work doesn't align perfectly with her expectations, you lose significant points. I would not recommend this class if you don't have prior calc knowledge.
Dr. Ralston is very intelligent and caring, but the classes consist of her zooming through homework problems. It is expected you already know the material before class. The grading criteria is unclear. There are weekly exams that I study ~7-8 hours for every week just to barely scrape by. -(36 math ACT, A in Calc 1 & 2 prior to college)
this class is really difficult but remember to utilize your resources. Dr. Ralston is a very driven person and expects that from her students, but she wants everyone to succeed. go to her office hours and talk to her after class and she will work with you. make sure to watch the videos (one of my mistakes) and form good study habits early on.
Ralston is a phenomenal professor and knows her stuff. Her material is very in depth and complicated. Even though I did not pass, I feel like I have a better understanding of Calc than I did before. She makes her classes super fast and that is what makes it the class hard. I highly recommend going to her office hours. She is very friendly!
Best math teacher I have ever had. This is a hard class and requires a lot of work. She does everything she can to help her students. Lectures are quick, but with leg work outside of class, you can succeed. Don't be afraid to ask for help from her, she's very nice.
This is a difficult course, especially if you don't have prior calculus knowledge. To be honest, I'm lucky to get a B. Prof. Ralston knows what she's talking about, is caring, and encourages her students to challenge themselves. The only complaint I have is the pace. I found it difficult to keep up, and the structure was absurd. Go to PAL sessions!
This class was incredibly difficult, and it requires a ton of time to do well in. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed it because of Dr. Ralston's dedication to teaching. The class moves through content incredibly fast, so I recommend attending every PAL session possible to stay on top of things. She also moves very fast in lectures, so be ready to write!
Ralston was very good at getting through so much material in so little a time. She gives all of the resources a student should need to pass the course. That doesn't mean that the course won't take a ton of work to pass. I worked really hard and barely got a C. I wouldn't recommend taking the course unless you feel confident in your math abilities.
Very difficult class with lots of studying needed. I did not know a single thing about calc before starting this class and I was able to get an A-. Dr. Ralston teaches very quickly but is always willing to answer questions.
Prof. Ralston is a smart individual but half the time it felt like she was teaching the course to herself. She was working out the problems at her own pace and did not give enough time for us to even attempt the problem. Quite a few of the lessons were delivered through video which increased the workload outside class. Way too fast paced.
It was obviously not her fault, but the professor she taught with for years died during the semester. As a result, her teaching style is not adapted to be solo. Additionally, she is not very accommodating, and at several points during the semester she snapped at students. For many engineers, she is a requirement for now, but, if possible, avoid.
Dr. Ralston's class is challenging, but if you do the work assigned and PAL materials you will pass the class. I struggled to get on my feet the first half of the semester and adjust to the work load. She will work with you if you need help. Genuinely a caring professor.
Great teacher
Very very good teacher but a test every Tuesday at 60% of your grade ensures it is a weed out class. Don't skip this class and move to ENGR 102.
Only take her if she is your only option, if you do take her go to the pal sessions. Class is very test heavy and a lot of the content is taught through lecture videos. In person lectures are mandatory but not overly helpful. Class is passible, but you must put in extra work outside of class.
Her class is very difficult and you will get a grade that matches the effort that you put into it. You will definitely need to go to the PAL sessions every week to prepare for the tests if you want to do well. She can seem intimidating but is kind if you email her to ask questions. She is easily accessible outside of class as well.
Dr. Ralston Had very thorough lectures and was sure to teach all content well. About 20% of the content we must learn was taught through video lecture, while the rest was covered in person (there was just too much to cover solely in class). There is weekly homework assignments, but she can work with you to solve them all if you have problems.
Very tough teacher, but also very willing to work with you if you're having trouble and show that you're trying. If you want a grade like I got, be prepared to put your life basically on hold because it will consume so so so much of your time. Watch the videos of the lectures. Work out the problems yourself. Do the homework multiple times.
Dr Ralston is certainly a work-heavy professor, but don't let that dissuade you. She prepares people for the exams well, and along with tutoring services it is possible to pass with an A. The exams are weekly, so its possible for a bad exam or two to not be as much of a stain on your grade as other classes might be.
She is extremely test heavy; Tuesday is the exam, Thursday is a review of that test, and Monday is a review for the next text. She only teaches new material two days a week! This worked alright for Calc I, but in Calc II, we're watching most of the content on our own time with pre-recorded videos. Only take if she's your only option.
She makes the class extremely difficult, but you'll be much better at math as a result. She is easy to work with, gives lots of grace, but does make the class hard
She does the best she can teaching a difficult class. If you put in enough effort and get help when needed, you will do fine in the class. Go to PAL sessions, the MRC, and structured reviews. Tests are very important, and your lowest score on part one and two is dropped. Work outside of class is required. Don't get behind if you want to do well.
This teacher is extremely harsh in terms of grading as no partial credit was given. In my case I got a 0 for a full completed exam with bad answers but with full procedure. Lecture is super fast paced and she thinks you know everything. Not a good professor and her attitude is not the best. Old fashioned teacher and difficult.
As a student who has taken Ralston's calculus classes 3 semesters in a row, I can tell you with utmost certainity that your GPA will forever thank you for going as far as to avoid this class like the plague, it will become the vast majority of your homework regardless of what other classes you take, tests are once a week, every week, and are HARD.
Dr. Ralston is an amazing professor. If you are struggling, she is always willing to help and wants to see you succeed. Calculus is a difficult subject, so the class in itself is hard. You must keep up with the weekly homework if you want to do well on exams. Make an effort not to fall behind because content is taught very fast.
Excellent prof., she has taken me through the entire engineering calculus series. You will learn so much. While the content is challenging, she is very easy to work with, will help you one-on-one, always responds to emails promptly, and will extend deadlines. The tests are hard, brutal, and rhythmic; there is a flow that you must get into.
I've taken Ralston for Calc 1 and Calc 2, but Calc 3 was another beast. The summer class is so jam packed that it sometimes was hard to keep up with all of the content. She does her best with such an intensive course, but the exams and especially the final are very difficult. Exams make up the majority of the grade.
Dr. Ralston Consistently teaches some of the hardest weed-out classes available to engineering, and she does it well every time. She takes time to cover all topics thoroughly, but also is aware of the pacing of the course, breaking hard weeks apart as much as possible. She is consistently available for individual aid if needed.
