Good teacher!
If she asks a question, she won't talk until someone answers. It's not a fun class.
she might be more interesting if she didn't talk so monotone. she grades like we should have been professonal writers. I thinks someone gave her a hard time in college so she's returning the favor.
shes an ok teacher i guess. She wont move on unless someone answers her question and the class is pretty easy. not a hard class, just kinda boring.
Great prof..for a newbie, I always got good grades on essays.. not too demanding, and very easy to work with..although she is another prof who grades attendence religously... absolutely no reason to fail her class... hell of a lot better than J.Curtis
Listen to you pansies. Oh, god forbid a college professor actually demand that you answer some questions! Got to love San Jac students... Sayles was a decent teacher, I liked that she expected interaction and comprehension. A little distant and a lot green with a need to get beyond high-school teacher tendencies - but very fair.
I didn't get the grade I wanted in comp I but I really learned a lot from her and classes were fun. So I took her again and this time around I guess I've figured out her style. This class is certainly a lot of work and don't think you will get an A for doing the minimum requirement but if you like to learn and be challenged she's a good one to take
Sayles was a good teacher, she did read ALOT during class and it, in a way of puts you to sleep. She was very hard on grading essays, but has a very sweet personality.
THE CLASS WAS OKAY =) ...
I do not feel she takes into account the effort that students make in her class. She can do a better job at clarifying her expectations.
I do not feel she takes into account the effort that students make in her class. She can do a better job at clarifying her expectations.
She is not helpful at all she degrades even the book essays and grades it as C or B. Even though u work really hard but she does not appreciate it at all.
horrible english teacher,i love english and writing papers but she makes me hate it.ive never made a c on a paper before until her,she doesnt explain what shes looking for and doesnt even look at the rough draft herself to help.i wouldnt recommend her
You need both books. OK at first but she clarifies what she wants on a paper AFTER she grades them. Reads a lot in class (boring). If you miss a class she WONT let you make up the work. Doesn't look at rough drafts (peer reviewed). RD due day before Final copy. DONT ASK HER WHEN SHE WILL GIVE ESSAYS BACK SHE WILL SNAP AT YOU (so rude).
Nice person, not a great teacher. Assignments are due before she discusses what you need to know to do it well, then grades you poorly because you didn't write it using the proper terms, or in the style she wants. Must be on time for classes, do each assisgnment and in-class assignment..they add up to a lot of your grade! Wouldn't take her again!
Shes a really nice lady but very boring. Has a mono tone voice and her reading will make you fall asleep. She grades really hard and her essay topics are dumb. I barely passed her class.
She is sweet and has a bubbly personality, but sort of laughs as she gives you paper to write over Spring break that is due the day you return,That really sucked! It is was hard to know where you stand in her class. In class assignments are boring but if you miss class, they equal big fat ZEROS,which hurt your grade.Very critical in grading.
I've read previous comments and I disagree. If you want good grades you have to do the work, listen in class and read the homework assignments. She's not a hard instructor but she expects you to do your work. She also expects you to be in class and on time when homework assignments are due.
Personally I did not like the way she taught. She is very boring!! She reads in class and students would fall asleep. She also grades very hard.
don't take this class, unless you are a genius at english, she gives an assignment that is due before she teaches the lesson. a lot of reading , and a very hard greader she never gave anyone a A ever ever
350 words are not enough to describe the comprehensible detestation I have for this class.I truly pity whoever gets the disgrace of being taught by Sayles. Not only is she the worst teacher I have ever had, there isn’t a single thing I have learned which has been worthwhile. In previous comments
“If make an effort you'll make a B.” it is partially the truth, the highest grade you can possibly make is a “B". While in class she actually told us that she rarely gives A’s. Just to give you an idea of how pointless and demeaning her class is, we started out with a full class, on the last day it was down to four people.
if you are taking this class you will have imminently doomed yourself to an appalling fate. I have friends who have done a fraction of the work to get an A, in this class you will work each and every class period never leaving early and you will receive a grade of a B or lower. Do yourself a favor do NOT take this class.
i didnt even have her but she subbed a few times when i took 1302. she was my SIXTH grade english teacher...and she barely has changed. I didnt pass then so svoid her now!
the worst teacher ever...!!!
Do not take!!!! Very hard to pass. She will load you up with tons of unnecessary work!!!!
then you are going to take her class? how do you feel if you fail a class? you wanna experience it.. ya go in her class..
more than half dropped in my class.. and barely someone will get A. god please dont take her class..
I am particulary fond of english and enjoy writing but the teachers ruins the essence of true writing. Her grading is judgemental and strict. I produced clear and knowledgable essays and never even made an C. She never interacts with the class, just extracts boring definitions and examples from the book. I regret taking this class b/c I lost hours.
She doesn't teach well and I haven't learned much out of her teaching. She doesn't explain the assignment until after she's assigned it. I noticed that she laughs while she talks, like there's some kind of inside joke. She's very boring and not helpful.
the class is total ****. She is a complete idiot who has no idea what she is talking about. The worst teacher i have ever had.
DONT TAKE PLEASE!!! she gives out a lot of papers to write and they are not short papers! she does not grade easy! on top of that u have boring reading assignments to write about that are useless! her voice is very tiering and super boring!
Not a good teacher
THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE
Talks too fast with a very low voice, doesnt try to understand the student
No feedback. Teacher let you see your grades at the end of the semester, so you do not have the opportunity to pass the class making extra tasks, or correct your errors.
Don't take her ...she has no quality to be a teacher.I had really bad experience and this is the only class I drop in my sanjac life.
Do not take her...she is very very hard on grading papers...i am taking her right now i just got my first essay back and got a c and i worked so hard on it...she told us herself that she doesnt give As
She's nice person but if your not going for a Literary degree the intensity of her class is wasted.
Sayles was very nice. However, she spoke in a low voice that was barely audible and often trailed off at the end of her sentence. Very hard class bc her grading is super strict. I made a C and I have always had compliments on my writing. I would not suggest her.
man she cant teach worth carp...she teaches as if the students already know her material, if we did you think we be taking this class
Her grading is waaaaay too strict! Nobody can get an A in that class... nobody. Completely impossible.
She is super sweet and is always available to help. She is really strict because she wants you to better yourself as a writer. If you like to learn and challange yourself, take her class. You will need to go to the writers center for tutoring and you will have to pay attention to get a good grade in her class.
Overly strict with grading: The fact that you were five minutes late to class on a turn in date results in failure even if you've written the best essay of the century. Completely unreasonable in most respects.
This woman is ridiculous. First paper, got a B on so I thought this class was going to go by alright. I was wrong. When time came around for research paper, she told me everything was great and it was a perfect paper but I cited people wrong in the paper so she gave me a F. a F for ONE thing wrong. Grades way to hard, and very useless and unhelpful
Horrible teacher. Grades ridiculously hard.
When I was frist coming into the class, I thought it was going to be interesting since I do enjoy writing every now and then. BUT I WAS HORRIBLY WRONG! Turns out, she's confusing and terrible at the same time and so is the class. I mean, she's nice and all but when it comes to essays, it's like a race to "impress" her. It's pathetic.
She grades too ridiculously hard. She gives you this false sence of security that you're gonna do wonderful in her class, then when it comes to grading essays, she fails you, not considering at the slightest the effort you've done to improve. Doesn't appreciate people's willingness to work harder. Don't ever choose her.
So overly nice its irritating. Grades way too strict!
ENGL 2311: Extremely hard class, I really worked hard for my grade, but this is college and not high school. A lot of memos to submit along with discussion boards and a huge paper due with an oral PowerPoint presentation. I would recommend this Professor if you are serious about your education, if you are a slacker I recommend someone else.
She was pretty strict when it came to essays; she never gives A's, you very lucky if you get a B
Very nice teacher who expects the most out of her students. She tells you exactly what she wants you to include in your paper and it is the students responsibilty to do it. She helped me become a better writer. You can get a good grade all you need to do is put in a lot of effort. This class is not for students who want an easy A.
She is the worst prof ever!!! Don't take her at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! WORK IS so HARD AND SHE GIVES SO MUCH WORK TO DO and Little time! She is extremely hard, gives about 100 assignments that are all due at the same time or near the same time. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She believes that her class is the only one that matter! I am WARNING about this teacher.
She is a pretty decent prof. but she grades way too harshly. Watch out!
Stay Away
Definitely a lot of work BUT she is VERY clear on exactly what she wants. I am taking her class online and I agree that her grading is a little harsh also. I am a pretty good writer and still cannot seem to please her. My highest grade so far this semester has been an 88. NOT AN EASY A....
She has a sweet personality and is knowledgable about the subject. But, I didn't get much out of the class, pretty much taught myself. Spends too much time on things that aren't helpful and is so monotone you will have trouble not falling asleep. She grades so hard! I made a B but not without staying up all night nearly all semester. A=impossible
I took her this past semester and she is horrible. I don't recommend her at all! She hardly emails you back when you email him. She is slow at putting up grades on black board, and her exams and Grades are extrememly hard. Stay A way...Stay Away..
Took FOREVER to post grades on blackboard, and often gave vague feedback if she bothered at all. Very frustrating not get feedback in time for tests. TONS of work for this course: weekly readings and discussion posts (need to be a full paragraph per question!), essays with sometimes tight deadlines, AND three 3 hour tests. Budget your time wisely..
I took the class online. She grades mostly on format and less on content. Make sure your papers are in the right format or you will not get an A.
Extremely difficult - unrealistic expectations from prof. Grading is based more on format vs content
I would strongly recommend that you do not take this professor. She speaks in monotone, the class is dreadful, the inspiration isn't there, and her gradings on essays makes it even more difficult. You have to have extremely advanced time management skills to have her because she gives tons of work all around the same date. Don't do it to yourself!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!! She is an extremely hard grader! You will not receive anything higher than a C on any paper. She takes off for every gramatical error. If you want to get an A for your GPA I suggest you do not take this teacher. i did all of my homework and wrote all m essays to requirement and still only made a C!
Very dry reading selections. 90% of the stories that were read this semester involved some form of adultery or cheating. Don't forget to keep up with your weekly assignments. She is lenient on test grades, but cracks down on papers. 4 papers total, 3 tests. The weekly replies are frustrating to finish if you have no interest in the readings.
Do not take this professor if you want good grades. Impossible to make an A on a paper. Reading selections are long and boring. Very harsh grader. She will take points off for any error. She also takes forever to post grades on blackboard.
I took both ENG1301 & 1302 from Professor Sayles, I really enjoyed her as my instructor. She's a very kind person and has a warm aura. She went out of her way to help her students with their writing multiple times. It's not an easy course, but it's not difficult. You just have to put in effort and actually try ;)
I really tried on all her writing assignments. The reading reflections that are due every Monday night, the long essays she assigns that are due the following weeks. I still failed on every single one of them. She is a tough grader, gives no advice. The worse part is, she reply emails so late. You can barely get any help from her.
Very good teacher. Her class consists of essays and some group work but she is very helpful and specific about what she wants. She can be picky when it comes to grading, but it's still easy to pass and get good grades. She never gave out tests, grades were mainly essays, reflections, and group assignments.
Mrs. Sayles was fantastic. There were a couple days that I had miss, and one that I was late. I communicated with her in advance and told her I would be late or missing, and she went above and beyond to work with me. She never took anything off of attendance because of this, and helped me make it possible to still get grades for the days I missed.
If you care about your education, do not take this teacher even if she is the last one available! Just wait to take your english course the following term with a better teacher. I registered late & she was the only professor who was still available. Now I know why... She doesn't appear to care about her students well being. Don't waste your time.
Professor Sayles is very nice and peaceful. Very welcoming. Yet, a tough grader. She will hardly ever grade a 100. An 'A' in her class could be considered a 95, so expect those grades! Though it pushes you to do better, it seems as if the effort goes unnoticed. Your work may be completed and very good, but she will deduct points off in everything!
Very helpful. Straight forward with what she wanted us to do. Very nice and understanding. Just need to put enough effort.
she was boring, topics for essays where senseless. she picky when grading
Mrs. Sayles is a really tough grader but if you take her class you will actually learn. She is a really good teacher and will help you if you ask. If you miss an assignment and have a good reason for if she will most likely let you make it up. She gives really good feedback. As long as you do your work and read you will pass her class.
I took her online class and it was super easy. The reports took a two-three days to do and I got Bs on most of them but they are doable. She replies to your emails on the same day which is a great thing. Quizzes are open book so I recommend renting the book.
She is a tough grader. A is 95 and it is really hard to get 100. She is so kind but there are so many group works. And all of them are graded. Im sure that her class is really helpful to improve your writing skill. But i think other choices are better if you want an easy A in this course.
She will constantly tell you to put your phone or laptop away. You can buy the book but, you will only use it twice & will get upset if you don't have it. You write 5 essay with each of them being at least 4-8 pages. If you don't meet length requirement or correct sources she'll fail you. Many in class assignments so try not to skip.
I really enjoyed Prof. Sayles. She is a tough grader but she gives you clear instructions as to how to write your paper. She likes to ask questions in class so be prepared to give her answers after reading stories. She is easily accessible outside class, email her anytime M-F and she will respond. Take advantage of her offerings to proofread.
I took her online shes awesome online! A discussion every week but very easy 5 major essays but also doesnt offer extra credit or accepts late work so overall the class was easy but you only get one chance to do good ended with a B just because I forgot to do some assignments and couldnt recover with a late grade I recommend her though!
I cant even begin to describe whats wrong with this lady and her class there are so many problems if you have the misfortune of taking her I wish you good luck because youll need it
She's not a bad teacher and her class is really easy. The only thing I would say is she is highly passive aggressive and it gets annoying fast. She tries to shove a lot of useless busy work in your face just to kill time. Wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you enjoy passive aggressive people.
Course itself is easy, although when you contact her she's very passive aggressive and doesn't address the concerns or questions you give her. She add's grades without notice and without it being part of the pre-listed grading formula. The work itself is generally easy but there's quite a lot of it for a class like this.
Professor Sayles is a good professor that is willing to work with you. She gives very good feedback but is a tough grader. this class was a tough one that I was stressing about. There is a lot of reading and 2-3 discussion boards almost every week. If you are a slacker DO NOT take this class. just because its an online class doesn't mean its easy!
Her instructions were a bit vague but they were no different than the actual requirements of a technical paper. Her grading is absurd & you'll almost never receive anything higher than a 95 (I got 1B & 1C). DBs & major papers are due biweekly. Be sure to take advantage of Smarthinking to check your work. She uses Turn-it-in so don't plagiarize.
Don't ever take her she's the worst!
You must turn in an essay every 2-3 weeks. She assigns homework everyday, but she lectures so much you wont have time to go over your work. It could take 2-3 days. She gives you nonsense assignments during class that have no correlation with what were even doing. She will give you more work before youre even finished with what you started.
She gives you a lot of homework, but most of it isnt graded and she lectures so much shell never get to it. It can take 2-3 days just to go over one assignment because she never shuts up. You will never leave this class early. Youll be lucky if you even get out on time. If you have a class right after hers, good luck.
Doesn't care about her students well being. Very hard grader. Gives a lot of pointless homework that has nothing to do with the topic of the lesson. Doesn't teach what is needed to know in order to write her unnecessary essays. Would not recommend.
I really wished I wouldve looked on her reviews before taking her. She is the WORST!! Im taking her 8 week class and shes already missed 4 of the 20 days weve been in class. Her topics make 0 sense. She said that she would never give a 100 because she doesnt believe anyone is perfect. I have never had a professor this poor!
Online ENGL 2311. She is VERY strict about deadlines - there is a discussion every week (If you miss 3 discussion questions you fail the class) and a total of 6 projects which take the place of tests. If you miss any of the deadlines for the projects you instantly fail the class. Overall it was easy enough, just be cognizant of the deadlines.
Professor Sayles will make you HATE literature. She does not teach, she assigns an unreasonable amount of reading, gives you a paper topic and sends you on your own. When you submit your paper be prepared for it to be graded solely on whatever mood she is in that day. She puts little to no feedback on your papers and has no justification for grade.
This professor is a tough grader and takes very long to grade essays. She did not teach very many writing techniques. I did not learn how to properly write an essay. Assigns readings from textbooks that are unnecessary. She also requires participation and puts students in breakout rooms for discussion.
Professor Sayles was encouraging and supportive. She definitely wants students to succeed and IMPROVE their writing abilities. The texts used were fun and insightful, and the online grammar activities were valuable. I would have loved to take Comp 1302 with Prof. Sayles as well!
Horrible teacher. Does not teach. Lot of readings. Would not take again. HORRIBLE
There is a lot of reading and note-taking assigned, but she doesn't check them or grade you on them. (I read less than half of the articles from the list). She does give in-class assignments due at the end of the period, so attendance is mandatory. Sayles is such a nice person and a great teacher, but she doesn't give out 100s (95 and 98 instead).
Professor Sayles was okay. Her class is rigorous with lots of reading and in-class assignments. She is a tough grader but does not give clear instructions on how to write essays. Most of the time you have to find out yourself what she wants. There are 4 essays in this class and you basically write them back to back with no breaks. Good Luck!
Such a tough professor. She does not give any other grades rather than 95,85,75. She makes you do unnecessary reading every week, and plus on top of that there are about 3-4 discussion boards to be done weekly that have to be answered in essay format. The tests are essay format as well on top of three other 5+ page essays. Never again
Professor Sayles is a good teacher. She is understanding even through the class she has designed for her students is troublesome. Lots of reading that do matter in relation to the essays. She bettered my writing skills so that is a positive.
Easy class overall as long as you can keep up with the work. Didn't seem to grade hard. There are 2 discussion boards for every Learning Unit except for the last one. One of those Units is a group report. Memo, Group Report, Procedural Writing, Proposal (4-page), Research (6-pages), Resume, Oral PowerPoint based off Proposal.
Tough grader. Provides very good feedback when asked and truly wants to help students. SO much reading required in the class be prepared. Big on partner/group work. Being lazy in this class won't pass, she makes sure of it
My overall experience in this course was okay. Professor Sayles was great at communicating and leaving clear instructions. The only issue I had was the overbearing workload because it often interfered with my other classes. I would only recommend this class to people who are able to prioritize the course or have excellent time management.
Was willing to see what you can improve on papers. Holds conference hours that can dramatically help boost your grade if you let her proof read the papers she assigns to you. As long as you finish the papers on time and be in class on peer review, you should be fine.
This class was very difficult because of the workload. The whole class is very heavy on group work so If that's not your cup of tea I would avoid her class. Professor grades so harshly, only 90 ,95. She assigns so much reading and homework, it was hard to balance this class with my others. Overall, I recommend this class if you will prioritize it.
The semester started with about 45 people, by the end of the class, only 16 people were left. Need I say more?
Sayles is tiring. I finished her class with a high A but this lady does not believe in 100s. Even on the easiest assignments, she would only give out 95s or 85s and give no reason as to why you received that grade. Each assignment is on PAPER. She makes you do everything on paper. You need a textbook but you dont have to use it, mine is all ripped.
Professor Sayles is okay, she assigns A LOT of work but it's manageable. They're 4 essays each 3+ pages but she does guide you through the writing process. Her grading is strange as she never gives 100s and doesn't explain why. There is A LOT of group work and A LOT of reading/watching. Take another class if possible, if not prepare to work hard.
She is a nice lady. There is 4 essays, she does grade a little hard but follow the rubric and you will be fine. There is lots of group work and in class activities so beware. Just make sure not to slack off and start on essays early and you will be fine.
Pretty decent amount of work, but was somewhat manageable. Don't be afraid to email and ask questions. Also, don't be afraid to ask her to review your rough draft. Whenever I asked her to review my essay (sorta like a peer review), she would give me helpful revisions and offer advice on what I should fix, add, change, etc.
This class was overall difficult, but if you put in the work and do everything she asks, you will get a good grade. If you email her a draft of your paper for each module, she will give feedback that will help you revise and get better grades.
Be aware that this professor is strict with NO PHONES! She also assigns many In-Class/Homework assignments and reading. The workload took a toll on me, including how tough her grading was. I barely got a B in this class!
professor sayles is a good professor who thinks that you only have her class. if youre taking multiple classes i would steer away from her. clear grading criteria, lots of simple assignments but only 4 essays, all worth 20%+ your grade. short deadlines which is annoying but manageable. 1 pop quiz LOTS OF ASSIGNMENTS ON PAPER HAND HURTS A LOT
Prof. Sayles is great! She gave clear and detailed lectures and walks you through everything step by step. warning she is a tough grader and there are A LOT of assignments (I didn't mind that though). I love writing but, if you struggle with writing this class will be tough. Overall she's great. Just pay attention u will learn a lot from her :)
She was ok, wouldn't take her class again.
Professor Sayles assigns a lot of work, but it's manageable if you stay on top of things. The essays can be tough, but she provides good guidance. I found unstuck study really helpful for essay prep - saved me time compared to ChatGPT alone.
She was pretty decent, some reading and note taking(99% didnt need to), a lot of in class work and group work, and no test only 4 essays. I think her rating should be alot higher than what people are saying, but there are other patricia sayles. The essays were not that bad, the worst being the 3rd and the best was the last one. Just do the work.
The best thing for you to do if you register for this class is to drop it. Absolutely scathing reviews going back more than 10 years and it seems nothings changed, wish I listened. Truly, words aren't enough. Also I'm almost entirely certain the few recent positive reviews calling her "decent" were written by her. Weird behavior, in class and out.
Although the course is quite vigorous and requires lots of effort, it helps strengthen you as a writer. Her attendance is mandatory in order to pass the course and there is a daily assignment, but it's doable if you're determined. She is structured when it comes to essay planning and is willing to help you revise your essay prior to submitting.
Had lots of meaningless assignments, including paper, which honestly had no positive effect as they were just there as filler grades which tried to relate to the essay topic but didn't. Harsh essay grader too, will never give a 100.
First time returning to college! She is very detailed and organized. If you're an adult 28+ years old, you will find this course very interesting and practical. Be prepared for lots of work. If you are 18–27, you may find the course challenging unless you plan your time carefully. A group project is required. Overall, I would take this class again.
