She presented the class very well and wanted everyone to do well. Do the homework, pay attention and you will do well.
Great teacher! Teaches material very well and you can actually understand what she's teaching! Go to class, listen, take notes and do the homework and you will do well and understand accounting more than ever!
great teacher... not too much work, fair grader, and VERY willing to help
Nice teacher, very clear, and always willing to help above and beyond the minimum. You can get by with a good grade without reading, but DO YOUR HOMEWORK TO UNDERSTAND!!!!
She is a nice professor who is always willing to help. Although she can confuse you during class because of errors she makes she is very good at finding them on time. Exams are at the middle of easy and hard. Can pass this class if you do the quizzez, take good notes, and do the homework.
talk about a teacher who knows her stuff. she is extremely clear, helpful, and could make accounting easy for a third grader!
Very helpful and clear. Great professor!
Can be confusing and tough because it's an intro class to accounting, but she is a great teacher and explains things well. Very helpful, but tests can get difficult (but hey, it's college, expect challenges!). Take her for accounting!
Seriously one of the greatest professors I've had at DePaul... I recommend everyone to take her.
One of the best profs I have ever had. She made accounting seem actually pretty cool. As long as you come to class and actualy stay awake you will do well. She WILL make sure you understand anything and everything. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
She is very nice, VERY effective in explaining, and very helpful. Tests can be difficult if you do not study. She definitely does her part well, but you have to work to get an A. Just attend class, do the take-home assignments, and take notes. Midterm, final, and 2 or 3 take-home assignments make up your final grade.
Excellent instructor. Does a great job in integrating class notes with presentation of material and making connections to concepts in previous accounting courses.
Worlds fastest talking professor. Is extremely fast paced class. Homework is easy, but midterm may be somewhat difficult if you do not go to class.
Opened class saying that department has 30% failure rate, but not in her class. Which was a relief, yet average midterm grade was a D-. Certainly passing, but not acceptable. Understandably, one gets what one puts into a class. I would not recommend for those who need detail. Large amounts of costly print-outs needed. Far too fast for intro class.
Great teacher! If I could i'd take her for all my accounting classes. She doesn't give grades away, but as long as you pay attention you'll have no problem passing. Very helpful and not boring. She's not the kind of teacher who's classes you'l fall asleep in.
Easy A... Nuff Said.
too much costly printouts. her midterm and final are tricky. if you're not interested in accting at all, i would def recommend TOWER instead.
Interesting professor. Keeps you entertained. Never been a moment where I was bored in the class. It's hard, but if you take good notes and pay attention to his teaching, you will be fine. One thing good about is sometimes he gives hints away. If i had to chance to take managerial accounting again, I would take her.
Smith is definitely not an easy teacher, but she does teach the material well. Your grade is based off of some take home assignments, eduspace, midterm, and final. Though it is not required, I would strongly recommend attending class. The lectures are very helpful. You have to work hard for an A, but it can be done.
If you're the kind of person who doesn't like accouting, then you must take her. She explains everything very well that kids can understand her. Always interesting & never boring. Very few hw, little to no reading, & has notes prepared for u already. Also, I recommend going to all the classes just so u don't miss anything. It helps. Best acct prof.
Awesome professor. Explains material very well. If you go to class and study a bit an A is very attainable.
If there was a class called "Accounting for dummies"---she would be the one teaching it.
very nice and helpful. gives a very helpful curve at the end of the quarter
Great teacher. She talks kind of fast, but explains things well. You only need to read the book if you feeling like learning a whole bunch of material that you dont need. Overall she was awesome.
Great Professor! Really tries to make you understand the material. Took her for both ACC 101 and 102 and would recommend her to everyone. Midterm and Final and a project or two. Awesome lady!
Who knew an accountant could be so personable. Her class is very well structured and she makes it easy to study by outlining each chapter in typed notes. Quizes were frequent early on, but only one or two after the midterm. Material was kind of rushed post-midterm.
great teacher..i recommend her for anyone that either has to take this class or wants to take this class. if you are confused about something ask her and she will help you out.
AWESOME AWESOME ASWESOME teacher definatly knows how to teach. acc is not easy but she makes it very understandble she is ALWAYS there to help her students very quick to respond to emails amazing teacher i highly recommend her i wish i could have her for all my accounting classes!!! loved her loved her loved her!
Professor Smith is just awesome! funny and straight to the point and makes the material crystal clear! ACC 101 is one of the hardest courses at DePaul but with this professor you'll ace with no problem! There's a quiz every now and then and she even offered extra credit if you participate on eRecruiting. Really cares about her students.
She is not a good teacher at all. She talks too fast and Does not offer any extra credit. She is only giving extra credit because the college of commerce is making her give it to people this quarter. Tests are hard. class average is like a 75, which sucks so she is not a good teacher. If i were you take someone else if you are not an accounting m
She's nice but that's about it. She does talk extremely fast and sometimes makes you fall asleep because you just can't keep up with her so it's easy to just tune her out. The avg. midterm grade was a 75%, which is ridiculous. The labs are ridiculous too.
she talks too fast and she expects u to know the material even if ur not an accouting major...DONT TAKE HER! U WILL NOT PASS!
The last 6 comments are clearly the same person. I loved her! Cares about students, prints out notes so no need to read text, puts everything online so don't need to go to class. You either got it or you didn't. If you do the homework it's an easy A (takes a little time but easy). I never took accounting before and got 99 on midterm, 97 on final.
The class was not difficult but it does require a lot of time and effort since you have to teach everything to yourself. Patti talks way too fast. The midterm was a disaster and the final was no better. Those 2 things basically make up your whole grade so good luck. I'd take someone who can speak a bit slower so you can actually pick up the materia
this lady can't talk slow, let alone at an acceptable pace... it's like she's in her own world blabbing on with the assumption that everyone just understands everything. try to find someone else for 101 because you won't get anything out of smith
lol to the comment below me. she does talk extremely fast. it's really difficult to keep up with her. i dont understand how she has to many positive ratings on here..shes supposed to be the best for accounting but i would say otherwise. find somebody else instead.
she is a really good teacher. Accounting is actually fun with her. So take her. She goes over homework problems and explains them well. She has hand outs for all chapter . So book is really not needed. She doesnt collect homework. Very fair grader. I will take another class with her any day. Great teacher.. Take her. And no she doesnt go too fast
She is a nice lady but it is kind of hard to keep up with her. I thought the midterm and final were ridiculously tricky. I would not take her again for anything else so obviously I do not recommend her. If you can take Pritchard for 101 OR 102...DO IT! She is the best--seriously!
i dont recommend
Excellent professor--she makes it clear that you must attend class and do the homework to be successful. If you do this, you will do well and understand! I wish I had her for all my accounting classes!
Im a senior at DePaul now and i had smith when i was a sophmore and i wish there were more professors like her. to see all these negative comments about her (obviously by the same person) is sad. she is such an excellent teacher i wish more acc teachers like her were at DePaul. she does everything in her power to make the material clear to the clas
her notes were crystal clear. if you didnt read the chapters but studied the notes you wouldve gotten a good grade. and yea the midterm and final was probably hard bc students didnt put enough effort into it. this is an intro class, so there must be a lot of freshman taking it that dont understand that they need to study! TAKE PATTY SMITH!!!
I'm not that good at accounting and I took this 2 quarters ago, but here is my analysis. It wasn't easy for me. There were quizes about every other week. The midterm and the final was pretty tricky. It doesn't help that she talks a little bit too fast sometimes, but just ask her to repeat what she said. On the bright side she is very helpful.
she was not very clear on exactally what to learn in class. she gave real world examples but instead of helping and teaching what we were tested on she wanted us to know everything. not the best professor to take if what to know what to study for to get an A, her h.w and class notes were filled with extra work which you are not tested on!!
Prof. Smith is crystal clear when it comes to her lectures. She teaches you well and prepares you for exams really well. However, show up to class. I got an A on everything...including exams but received a B+?? I missed class once and left early once.
If you thought ACC101 was easy then ACC102 will be a lot easier. She is a very helpful teacher. Be sure to go to class and follow her notes. I never used the textbook and did well on her tests just going over her notes and the online hw.
The quizzes are impossibly difficult. You can have an easy time with the homework and assignments but the quizzes are way harder that you would expect having breezed through everything else.
She is not like most accounting professors. The questions she gives you on quizzes and are incredibly difficult. You'll think the stuff easy in class but that is not the case. I compared the questions to the questions that my friend's professor had and his were much easier.
Quizzes are much harder than necessary. You can easily fail them even if you feel like you understand the material in class. Take someone different if you can.
As people have stated before she talks very fast and she will also make quizzes very complicated for no good reason at all. It doesn't matter if you know the material, if you're not familiar with the type f questions she will ask then you will struggle. If you find accounting easy, this professor can make it very difficult.
She has her own unique style of teaching. This causes a lot of consfusion, because her notes are not always very similar to the book and she will often give assignments and quiz questions where the book will not help you.
She has an odd and quite ineffective way of teaching the material. Also, you won't finish all the chapters you're supposed to finish in this course. Take someone else.
Very hard quizzes in the beginning with a tough midterm and takes forever to grade papers. She zooms through certain topics too fast in class.
This class is not easy and she doesn't plan on making it. The material you learn in class is completely different from the quizzes and HW. She doesn't curve and tricks you with everything from quizzes to the midterm and final. Avoid her if you can because you will see no results of improving.
Acc was always hard for me but Prof Smith is a very good teacher. Her material on take home tests is pretty hard and you must study for her exams. Lots of outside time requiredfor studying and homework
Professor Smith is very professional, nice, and a decent professor. She had a few slip ups in the class but who doesn't? I think she prepared us for her finals but not to the degree I would have preferred (for example she just told us to study with a little review in class). I got an A but I had to study
She is very approachable and checks email frequently. Her fill in the blank as we go along style lecture notes are the exams, along with a few short chapters from the novel sized book. Lots of group work in any ACC350 class, and she takes it seriously so check everyone's work b4 submitting. I would definitely recommend.
She is very specific in what she is looking for and very clear as to where you got points off. Her lectures are informative, and the tests have no surprises. Ultimately it't not a hard class but does require work. There's a group assignment every week (not all of them are hard) and one group formal. Put the work in and you should get a good grade.
A lot of your grade is based on team work--my only complaint. The syllabus seems intimidating, but Prof. Smith is very nice and the work is absolutely manageable (if your team isn't completely worthless). One of my least hated accounting classes.
She talks way too fast, so it is hard to take notes especially when the material isn't that interesting. She is pretty clear and basically tells you what to study for mid-term and final though, that is her best attribute. She has a weird grading scale though where adding up the points don't actually get you your grade either.
ok so if youre taking honors accounting 101.... shes rough if youve never taken accounting! its like she teaches and expects you to know the information. the quizzes and everything is online but the quizzes are timed and difficult. not my favrite. she made me change my major.
The course material sucks but she helps make it bearable and teaches it well. If you're group members are screwing you over, make sure to let her know and she will factor that into your grade. Definitely need to study for the tests but she's very fair and an A is not impossible.
I took her for Accounting 101 honors (as part of strobel). You have an online quiz over the weekends and written assignments once a week. The midterm and the final are tough, but if this is going to be your career then you need to know it. A lot of people switched majors after this but it was the subject matter and not her, accounting can be hard.
Your grade is group projects, midterm, and final. Midterm was harder than I thought. Make sure to be attentive during class and take lots of note, use those as a guideline for the tests. If you have questions about projects she will answer. Make sure to do good work on the projects they are a majority of the grade. Get ready for presentations too.
Lots of group work, but the actual assignments and material are not difficult. She makes everything clear and cares about her students. Also her exams have a bad reputation for being all short answer, but the material is not difficult so the exams were actually not bad at all. This was my favorite accounting class I took all year.
Very smart and up to date with the accounting world. She cares about her students and want them to succeed. A majority of the class is group work, so as long as you have a good group, you're good to go. The midterm and final were not too bad, but it was all short answer. Overall a great professor.
One of my favorite professors at DePaul. The class material itself is kind of dry, but very relevant to the current accounting world and she makes it easy to learn. There are a lot of group assignments, but they were't difficult as long as your group splits up the work fairly. Her exams are not as bad as I thought they would be.
Good instructor and class overall. There is a lot of group work. As long as you have a good group and the work is distributed evenly the assignments are manageable. Midterm and Final is mostly short answer/fill in the blank. A lot of work but this was not a bad course. Would take her again.
Challenging class, however a lot easier than acc 308. P. Smith is a great professor and teaches you what you need to know. 40% of your grade is related to group work, so build a good group dynamic. Exams are based off her lectures and are not hard just cover a great amount of information. Stay on top of the work and you should get A.
I do not think her grading criteria is clear. Otherwise, I think she is a good professor.
the most ridiculous grader i have ever encountered at depaul . COME ON
Good professor, although she can be a harsh grader at times. I would still take her though. The entire quarter consists of group projects aside from the midterm and final. The projects can be time consuming but not overly hard, make sure to manage your time.
There is a lot of group work that she grades very strictly, but the grading criteria is relatively clear. However, she does not have very clear grading criteria for her midterm and final, which she gets very defensive about if you ask her to explain. Also, if she says she will curve you because you do all the work in your group, don't count on it.
Worst teacher ever. She doesn't know how to teach, she grades super unfairly, and has way too much busy work. The amount of work that she requires is absurd and then she goes and grades super harshly. Never in my four years of college have I debated not only on dropping a class but also dropping out of college Some people just shouldn't be teachers
This class is tough but Smith is very knowledgeable. She's prepping you for the real world, so don't expect it to be super easy. Just try your best and you should be fine. Most of the work is done in groups. Cons: she moves quickly through lectures and talks fast. Grading criteria for formal presentation not super clear.
Awesome Professor and super knowledgeable, I actually really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. There's a lot of group work and 3 presentations that aren't necessarily hard just time consuming. She tells you everything you need to know for the midterm and final, so if you don't get an A on them, that's on you. Definitely recommend
She's kind, fair, and finds solutions for students with group issues. I'm grateful that I was part of a group of students who worked hard every week. Her exams are great because they are conceptually what we learn in class. Nothing out of the ordinary and no surprises. Pay attention and don't miss class. Thank you for a great quarter!
Prof. Smith is a great professor! The class assignments are heavily based on group work, but they aren't difficult, besides the codification research. She tells you exactly what to expect on the midterm and final, and she gives partial credit on exams. Overall, enjoyed her class!
The most unfair professor in the world. Unfortunately she was the only professor to take at DePaul for this ACC-350 class. I waited quarter after quarter praying for another instructor to pick up this course. Every single rate below accurate. She is rude. Unfair. No clear grading criteria. She ruined my last quarter.
The assignments for this class each week are UNNECESSARILY long. Every week there is a detailed research assignment due and it is just extremely time consuming for no reason at all.
Prof Smith is a great and caring professor, I liked that she offers to help everyone individually so if you are not doing well in this class, don't hesitate to go to her for help she will go over everything you need to know to do better. Quizzes were hard, but ask for help and you will do fine. Reading the book or lecture before class is CRUCIAL.
I took her for a synch class and it was one of the most boring classes ever. She is very nice but her grading criteria's are a joke. I would have the right answers but unless I over explained I would lose a lot points for nothing. Midterm and Final were extremely easy if you look over the slides. The class is all busy work so be ready for that.
This class is a lot of work and what I do not understand is how her assignments will ask for your predictions. If it's not the prediction she thinks, you lose points. Her assignments are time consuming and discussions are a drag.
Unfortunately the only professor who teaches this class at DePaul. I'm sure she means well, but this class has an absurd amount of "projects". They are extremely time consuming and are graded in a manner that honestly do not make much sense. She will dock points if your opinion doesn't match hers. Wish I could take this class with anyone else.
If you are willing to put in the work and have great time management, she's not a bad option. Tough grader and gives no feedback on anything whatsoever. Can't use the internet for any information either because she creates her own exams. Good luck!
This class should be easy with any other professor. But she makes the class so much harder and she thinks everyone is cheating. Her assignments are so long and hard, you need time to finish the assignments. You can't find anything online. There is one big project that she doesn't give Information on and don't provide anything. All the best!
8 Quizzes, Excel Project, and a Final. If you actually apply yourself and read the book, watch the lectures, and do the homework you'll do just fine. She offers A LOT of extra credit opportunities. Take them, because they can boost you grade big time. She is very knowledgable and caring, take her if you enjoy/serious about ACC.
She is a probably one of the better professors at DePaul. Grade wasn't great due to my own laziness and missing assignments but if you actually try unlike me you should be able to get a good grade.
Class is straightforward. Homework is easy, and found online if needed. Watch her lectures carefully, they get you ready for her quizzes more than the homework. The quizzes were rough at first, but after adjusting and paying attention to the videos I got better. Take notes, practice the formulas because her quizzes aren't online. Great professor
As a returning student after 20 years finishing up an accounting degree, Prof Smith was great! The material was difficult, however, if you stay focused and bang out the homework, you'll do well. Also really enjoyed the office hours as she's willing to work with students and definitely passionate about our success. I highly recommend her!!
Professor Smith is an excellent teacher who is very passionate about the material. She always goes above and beyond to make sure her students understand the material. The content is difficult, but if you read the book, attend the lectures, and work hard on the homework, you will do very well.
Go to class, this is one of the hardest classes you can take.
teaching style inadequate
She is a great person, I really enjoyed talking to her and our conversations. BUT DO NOT, DO NOT, TAKE HER CLASS. She talks way too fast! You will have to teach yourself the material outside of class if you want to pass. Seriously if you can take another prof DO IT. She is a TERRIBLE professor, and this is not an easy class if it's your first time.
Does not go over problems during class, just says how to do it verbally and gives you definitions while talking super fast. Great person and passionate but as a professor her teaching methods are hard to follow. You have to basically learn all the material yourself and there is no point in showing up to class because the slides go to fast
She is a wonderful person but not so much a wonderful professor. The acc 312 (formerly 350) final was one of the toughest tests I've ever taken, and was nothing like the study guide. Avoid if possible, but she really is a nice person.
Professor Smith was a fantastic teacher. She genuinely believes every student is capable and wants to help them work to their fullest potential. There are lots of second chances available and she is very engaging.
Professor Smith was amazing. Just like every other accounting course, it's pretty reading and lecture heavy, but as long as you are willing to put in consistent effort, the course will be easy. Professor Smith is very good at explaining and is always willing to help in any way she can. Would definitely take again.
TAKE HER FOR ACC 101!! Lecture's are important but if you show up and practice with the homework and extra exercises, you will do good on the midterm and final. Labs also help for the exams and make sure to understand the principles and formulas and you'll be good.
PLEASE for your sanity, DO NOT take her if you want to actually learn accounting. She goes way to fast and doesn't even teach. its just a bunch of lectures that don't cover half the material that's on the quiz's. Be prepared to not learn anything and have to teach your self out side of class.
This class is tough, but Professor Smith cares about her students' success. Engage with the material, use unstuck ai for study prep, and you'll do well. Avoid if possible, but she's a nice person.
Professor Smith was awesome! One of the best professors I have had at DePaul. Not great at accounting but she was super helpful especially out of class. She is such a sweet person and so caring for everyone. Would 10/10 recommend her!!!
Dont listen to the other reviews! She is a great prof and teaches the material super well. I fully understood anything and that was with me on my phone working during class. Just pay attention and ask questions. She can go a bit fast but she always checks with the class to make sure everyone is good. Easy class. Great teacher. Would take her again!
Coming from a straight A student, the content of this class is hard. Lectures are boring, weekly research questions are difficult and she does not help or explain because she doesn't want to "give the answer away in fairness to other students". Very picky in terms of grading. Midterm was ok. Final was one of the hardest exams I've ever taken.
The main issue is that she goes through content extremely fast in an un-engaging manner. So when it comes time to learn the entirety of governmental accounting (entirely different from financial accounting or anything you've ever seen before) in just the final 3-4 weeks, the course becomes very challenging very fast.
I had an asynchronous class, however, her lectures are detailed and interesting. There were 4 research exams that you had to do by reading SEC and FASB documents. There were 2 group projects, which were easy if you got good teammates. Her exams are recorded, and they are closed-book and MCQs.
Very nice, caring lady. Dry lectures bc we're talking about GAAP. Research HW & group projects = reading GAAP website. Not sure if the class is just very hard/boring or if its her teaching style I had trouble w/, but I had to STUDY for exams. Midterm was fine, Final was HARD but offers EC toward exams. Had to put in more work than usual for an A
She didn't read directly off the slides and in her lectures she really explained each concept. Out of all my classes so far, I think I have learned the most from her financial accounting class.
She does a good job explaining the material and will go over HW questions that lots of students got wrong or that were skipped. She also offers a zoom review which really helps out. She gives full points for the HW as long as you actually tried/did almost all of it.
The professor is nice, but to get a good grade you will need to teach yourself through Cengage or the quizzes becuase the lectures are really complicated and too complex to understand. Apart from that she is considerate and tries to answer all the questions student might have. So asking question is key.
