she is the worest professor i have ever seen!!!!!
She makes things more complicated then they should be. She doesn't do multiple choice only long problem exams. She never gives students enough time to finish her exams. She does try to give extra credit because she knows she makes the tests hard. I would not take her if your not really good at math and doing long problems. Home work is just checked
such a mistake to take her for lab. like 3/4 of my class dropped her lab b/c she made things so dificult. shes the only lab teacher who asks u to type up ur report and u have to do all these extra sections that no other lab teac asks for. do not recomend
i used to get excited about chem but she turned that into anxiety about keeping up with the flow of prelabs, reports, worksheets, quizzes and notes that we had to do. took out the fun of it for me. way too strict a grader
Please don't take her if you want to pass the corse. She puts you down whenever you work hard and show progress. It is a nightmare to take her. You would hate your life. Whatever you do it is not enough . She checks each little detail like grammar as if it is English course. Her grading is really harsh. Avoid avoid her. Not helpful at all,
Relatively heavy work load for a 101 class. I learned a lot from her and she's fair to you if you 1) Do the work and 2) Actually want to learn about chemistry. The people who failed or did not like her did not take the time to READ THE SYLLABUS. She wrote everything clearly and she sets you up for 300 level classes.
IT is not a joke what people have written about her it true. except the one that want to justify what she did. she is the worst professor ever. Be aware of that don't take her. if you want to enjoy the chemistry.
Absolutely the worst professor ever! Don’t take her. You will regret it
Personally, I received a 97% in lecture (had Jayesekera) and a 67% in lab (with Takahara). I feel anybody who gets an A in her class is either one of the few students who she likes or a tremendously intelligent individual. I found her unhelpful, somewhat apathetic, and inconsistent. I felt like my work was over-scrutinized for an introductory chem.
If you are a nursing student like me please heed my advice and do not take Takahara. She is an intelligent woman, and knows her chemistry but her class is much more difficult than it needs to be. Takahara doesn't use the book at all, she teaches us what she thinks we need to know (which is not on the dept final)! Be prepared for a hard semester.
Dr. Takahara, please do all of us a favor and stop teaching. You may know your chemistry but you don't know how to educate or upbringing a student and help them succeed, that concept is fairly new to you and you also don't know how to encourage students. Please find another profession because you're hurting ours as students.
I don't what everyone is complaining about. She is very clear with what she wants. Although she is a hard grader, she is fair and is always open to help before tests. She doesn't use the textbook but she hands out lectures notes which are also very helpful. As long as you study and pay attention you'll do fine.
Strongly agree with everyone else. Had interest in chem but she absolutely ruined it for me. If you can avoid it, DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES, your life will be miserable. Worst class I've ever taken.
You think you're preparing for the exams with all the work she's gives and then when the test comes nothing she taught is on the tests. They are a real morale killer and she has no sympathy.
If you love yourself and your GPA, avoids her courses. Pure madness, something is wrong with her, her attitude sucks also. The worst teacher I have ever had so far at my MC. Grade too harsh.
she was not teach in the class.i studied by myself.it was hard because u have no idea what she will give u in the exam . i killed myself to got A, but she was so nice with students.
You can tell she enjoys teaching this material way more than 101. I'm in her honors class and had her for 101 Lab. Huge curve for exams. If you don't want to try, don't take her chem lab; she does a lot of lab reports. Always super nice and helpful.
Real talk.Yes she is very hard but she is also not out to get you and ruin your grades. She doesn't know how to do EASY. She's organized and responds to email very quicky and grading turnovers. Her test are very hard she knows she will need to curve before you take them. But I if you allow it, she will make you a better problem solver.
Be sure to read the syllabus and keep up with the work. If you do this and turn in your work on time, you will do fine. The tests are based on examples from class and homework.
Professor Takahara is much better than the professor that I had for 101. Interesting lectures and examples. Very detailed solutions to homework. Very helpful in office hours.
Lots of material for CH135. Fair grades. Lots of partial credit. Lots of extra credit too.
Dr Takahara teaches you how to solve problems and think. Lots of work but worth it. Do the homework.
great class. very interesting and easy if you study the notes.
Professor Takahara has gotten a really bad rap. Let me set something straight: She is NOT the worst professor ever. It's true, her tests are difficult BUT she is fair in the way she grades. She curves when needed and gives PLENTY of opportunity to better your grade. Come to class and study the examples. You will not regret taking her. She's great.
Not the easiest teacher, but definitely fair. Need to work hard, pay attention in class, take notes, and do your homework to succeed. She can be very helpful and offers a lot of office hours to ask questions. Exams may be difficult but a fair curve is added on when necessary.
Horrible teacher. She argues with students, disrespects opinions and is plain rude. Worse teacher I have ever experienced. Pathetic teacher, and isn't clear with what she wants. I strongly advice you DO NOT take a chemistry class with her.
She doesn't give enough time to finish exams, has never curved any text or given any extra credit. Try to get your Ph.D. in chemistry before you get in her class because exams are very difficult. She is unhelpful and very detached from students. Because of her I make sure I visit this site before I register. Stay away at you any cost.
Worst teacher ever. Horrible. She will make you hate chemistry. Not recommended.
Chemistry is not meant for everyone and I completely understand that. But as a professor she should encourage everyone and help them, not everyone is pre-med or a scientist, some students have to take this class to pass the university requirements. She could lighten up a bit. Very tough professor, offers no flexibility.
What a teacher! This teacher lacks empathy; not a nice teacher at all. Class atmosphere is very tense, Agony! Agony! Agony! Hope you are not taking another class beside her lab and get ready to teach yourself the material. She makes the course very difficult and enjoys seeing student’s failure. Get ready for the challenge of your life.
Professor Takahara is simply the best professor in MC. She is very organized and caring professor. She will not hesitate to help students by any means she got. Grade-wise, I think I could do a better job considering the opportunities she gave us to be motivated and work harder . She gives Extra-credits and I recommend her 155,000% Thank u Professo
She makes you love chemistry. I highly recommend her.
If you are a working student then this professor is not for you; lots of homework to do esp that Cengage that will take all of your time, i will say it again all of your time. She takes points for wrong grammar and spelling; really, for chemistry? She has a temper and yeah she yells and she can do it really well. Exams are really hard.
Ask for help and it is there, super nice, best class I've taken
Horrible Teacher! she will make you hate chemistry
Just, if at all possible take anyone else. For your sake.
pros: available at office hours, goes over past quiz questions cons: very hard grader, doesn't give u enough time to finish a test, assigns tones of online homework every other day, you are responsible to teach your self in lab, doesn't cover material thoroughly, no excuse if your late FYI: there will be lecture and lab quiz every week
Sad face, though grader, hardest class and Lab I've taken from her, dropped middle of the semester. So harsh grader and mean to her students. I was one of not well speaking English second language student, she made me feel so bad. Those good ones written by her. If Possible TAKE ANOTHER Lecturer. Don't even think to include in your schedule guys!
She is a tough grader, but she really cares. Do you readings before class, and practice the same concept over and over again until you get the hang of it. Don't be afraid to ask her for help, because she will help! She gives ALOT of extra credit.
She is pretty hard I won't lie. Doesn't really help with labs, with that in mind she is a tough grader and you can try all you want on a lab, she see's something wrong, your grade for that lab is basically out the window. Also expect a bunch quizzes.
She is ridiculously tough. I don't understand how she got those good rates. she might look nice but she enjoys seeing students struggling in her class. If you ask her a question, she makes you feel so bad and nervous. She doesn't explain anything in class and she thinks everyone is capable of doing everything by their own.
I just finished CHEM 132 with Professor Takahara. I learned a lot in this class and she is one of the best professors I've had. I'm a chemistry major, so the material is very important to me. There is a lot of work, but if you do the work, you will pass the quizzes and tests just fine. Pay attention to examples during lecture.
Participation mandatory and you don't really want to skip class because she emphasizes things in lecture that show up on the exam. She is available during office hours, everything clear on syllabus. My advice is to do as many practice problems as you can--don't worry, there's HW:) It's the best way to understand the ideas and prep for the tests.
It's not an easy class, but Chem isn't an easy subject. There is some online homework, but not overwhelming. There are many quizzes, but she drops the lowest few and the lowest Exam for your final grade. She runs most of the chem help sessions, and is very accommodating. Put in time and show effort, you won't have a problem and may even have fun.
This isn't a class you can skip. You aren't penalized, you'll just miss out on the material and get behind real fast. She provides the notes for each section, and you work out the problems as a group. Some homework, a number of quizzes. She will curve, and drop low grades. Her background is amazing. She is beyond qualified. I enjoyed the class
As a returning student who has taken a years of chemistry at multiple universities, as well as several years of research, I can honestly say that Dr. Takahara is one of the great professors out there. Her expectations are built upon real world experiences. Excellent, well organized lectures. Will really help you succeed but won't coddle you either.
Professor Takahara provides some interesting, informative lectures and practice problems are explained step-by-step on how to solve. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there is important material covered during class that will come up on exams or quizzes, missing these will put you behind. The course is challenging, but manageable. Put in effort NP
Nice and helpful professor.
One of the hardest classes I've taken. Got an A but had to really work for it. The class was interesting and very rewarding and worth the work.
Clear professor who wants you to actually learn the material. She expects all homework turned in each week and grades for completeness. Extremely supportive but runs a tight & organized ship. GREAT PROFESSOR! Wish I could have her for ALL my classes!
Great Professor and wants the students to pass and learn But if you haven't had a good chem background you will struggle in the classes because of the nature of course which 2 courses in one semester. So before you take the course just make sure you are ready for a rigorous course and you have time in your schedule for this class
Chemistry is a super hard subject, but Dr. Takahara does her best to help you pass, as long as your willing to put in the effort to ask for help and do the extra credit work. If chemistry is a completely new subject for you, i would recommend you read the text book ahead of class and ask questions during lectures.
I took two chemistry in row with her. she is not an easy professor but she is very knowledgeable. if you do the usual work that is expected you will pass the course with good grade. she will give out hard quizzes sometimes but if the overall grade is low she will give out extra credit. I recommend her for those who are looking to learn something.
Personally i like the way she teaches. she gives out lecture note so we dont have to buy the text book, however, in her course we generated a lot of paper. she is really helpful in the lab, i have always asked her questions and she answered. In general, i will recommend her for those who likes to learn something.
Dr Takahara is a very good and informative teacher. She expects you to do your homework often tests based on homework material. She is fairly helpful during labs and during office hours. However she is a very strict professor and can be slow at the beginning of the course; and hence has to cover lots of material at the end of the semester.
Had for Lab portion of Orgo I. Professional and serious. Pay attention when she's lecturing! Doesn't hover, minds her business while you work. Plenty eager to help if you ask, but you have to go up and ask!
expect to read a lot to understand the material. Expect pop-quizzes every lab section. The key to succeed in this class is to ask for help when you need it. There is Chem help sections that are specifically design to help students with their assignments and lab reports.
I had her for general chemistry and she was really great. I love her as a professor. She's tough, but you know you earned your grade when you get a good one. She's always willing to help, you just have to ask! Her R2D2 is the cutest too. She's just very approachable. Don't be afraid of her. She doesn't want you to fail. That being said, work hard!
Seems to hate being in the classroom. Highly unapproachable, chews people out for going ahead of the material and falling behind. Tells people to their faces that she doesn't care about them or their grade. Avoid if possible.
gives extra credit, let class redo an exam, gives quizzes every other week, lectures can be difficult to understand sometimes but will always answer a question, brings snacks to the exams
Dr. Takahara is a great professor! If you are passionate about chemistry take her. Her exams are tricky sometimes. She gives a lot of extra credit and a second chance to improve your first exam grade. No textbook. Do your homework and read ahead of time. If you don't understand some topics go to her office hours. I recommend her!
I just finished Dr. Takahara's CHEM 131. I read some negative comments here so I was hesitant to sign up, but it turned out great! She is very clear, gives fair tests and is generous with partial credit. No required homework (only suggested problems). Open note quizzes. I wish she was going to teach CHEM 132 in the fall so I could take her again.
Great professor. Go to class, do your homework, and turn lab reports in on time and you will get a good grade. It's not super easy but if you put time into studying you will get a good grade.
Great Professor!! She gives all of the material for you to pass and do well. You may ant to drop the class in the beginning stages but it gets easier as you go along. She answers any questions you may have. She gives many extra credit opportunities. Quizzes are open book as long as you do your homework. She brings snacks which are also a plus!!
Professor Takahara is very good. She does tend to make calculation errors. She offers plenty of extra credit. She answers all questions students have concisely and also makes herself available during office hours and she tutors in Ackerman. It is a hard class initially but if you use her as a resource and keep coming for help you'll do well.
I'm looking for a CHEM132 course to take in the second part of the summer and I wish she were teaching! I had her for CHEM131 and it was a great experience. Very reasonable, very helpful. The class is lots of work, but it's chemistry so I expected that. I would take her for any chem class.
I took prof. Takahara for Chem 131 and 132 and she is amazing! She breaks everything down and makes it really easy to understand the material. She does not require homework (it is assigned but not mandatory) but doing the work will help you pass her quizzes and tests with ease.
She is great at explaining difficult concepts and gives plenty of opportunities to bring a lower grade up. I almost dropped the class because I thought I was going to fail but ended up with a B+. HW is not graded but used for open notebook quizzes. She keeps things interesting and it is not hard to focus during her lectures. Def recommend.
I could barely keep up with her. She claims to quiz us on the homework, but I swear all the questions on the quizzes looked foreign.
She is mediocre. However, she gives a ton of xtra credit. She can be unreliable; sometimes she won't be in her office during her "office hrs". Her tests were Ok, not too hard but not easy. Ppts/notes are printed and passed out to students. Would only take her again if the remaining teachers weren't good, she is 1 of the better ones... so they say
She gives out a ton of extra credit throughout the semester but never curves anything. Went in for help many times but didn't get anything out of it. Made me feel as if I was incompetent and should have already learned the material before coming to class. Just be prepared to teach yourself. Final exam was NOTHING like her other exams.
Lectures were occasionally engaging. Often, there would be an overwhelming amount of material and most of it must be self taught. But she'll resolve issues if you seek help during office hours. She offers plenty of extra credit, which I am eternally grateful for. Fondest memories where when she brought in small trinkets and brightened our days.
Good teacher! Most lectures were interesting ex. Gave us M&Ms (which we later ate) to help us understand Lewis dot structures. But there was a lot of hw. This helps you on the quizzes/tests so do them! Very generous in giving extra credit! Says many mom jokes but no one laughs. Great person in general! Prob the only chem prof to give extra credit.
have no doubt that she write her own reviews. this professor (at least for the class im taking) reads off the powerpoint and does not interact with the class. she does not teach, she talks. she doesnt engage whatsoever, and her tests is based of material she never taught. she belongs in a high school setting, not college level professor ready.
I took her class last semester, shes so nice! She gives handouts where one can take notes. Content is clear. She gives extra credit and shes also available to help students during office hours! Effort does count!
Good professor for MC. If you go to class to learn, not the best one. Chemistry needs good notes to reflect on later, which is impossible when the professor only wants to use 4sqft of board space and wipes it clean after each sentence. It made complete notes impossible to take. Confusing when trying to study n do well. Use the other 7 boards maybe.
Dr. Takahara is a nice woman, but a terrible professor. I tried to be optimistic about her at the beginning of the semester, but soon realized that she's a very disorganized teacher and is extremely lazy towards students who go to her for extra help. I went to her office for a specific question and she told me to go to the Ackerman learning center!
Professor Takahara is a very nice person but not the greatest professor. She will tell you to come to her office hours for help, but when you show up she'll send you somewhere else to get the help. I wouldn't recommend taking this class EVER, this is honestly the hardest class I've had my whole college career.
Good professor, very knowledgeable. CHEM135 is difficult so no walk in the park but Takahara explains things quite well for the time it all has to be crammed into. Expect the early weeks (leading up to the first test) to be very difficult because it's treated as a weed-out period. Don't take this class unless you're very confident in math.
Really great teacher, I definitely recommend. She used a free online textbook and a homework website that was based on it. It was the most helpful system I've ever seen. If you are stuck on a part of the homework, it will show you a lesson to help you understand what you are having trouble with. Although she does give more homework than usual
I took this class over the summer. It is was difficult at first. Be prepared for lots of math. The professor provided us with lecture note outlines which help a lot. Take lots of careful notes in class. She also prepared us very well for the ACS final exam. I did really well on the exam because of all the practice she gave us.
I don't understand some of the comments below. Professor Takahara is very organized and fair. She hands out notes for you to write and practice problems. Exams and quizzes are graded and returned right away. But be warned, this class is hard work. I did well on the ACS exam because of her practice problems and going to office hours.
The worse professor at MC. She is very disorganized. At the end she curves the ACS that everyone fails. I passed the course but did not learn anything.
Listen here. don't be afraid because of bad reviews. Im in her class this semester and I can tell she actually read these reviews and improves her teaching!! She IS engaging, she does curve exams, she is very helpful and she give a lot of extra credit. Shes great HONESTLY
She is a nice professor. But she goes too fast, without caring if anybody understands. She gives very hard exams, you sometimes feel like youve never seen the material in class. However she also gives extra credits especially when you find mistakes on her worksheets
She just reads off the powerpoint the whole time and is still pretty vague. Only did well by reading the textbook, class felt pointless. She curves a LOT tho so it should be an easy grade as long as you put in some effort.
She gives alot of extra credit. She provides worksheets for practice and is very caring and always willing to help. Exams are curved. The class is easy if you do all of the practice provided and do your part.
I personally wouldn't recommend Prof. Takahara, but she seems to be one of the best at MC Rockville. She certainly tries to teach but is very disorganized. She tries to make up for this by offering insane amounts of extra credit. Her exams are ridiculously hard compared to her lectures. You might not learn much, but at least you'll likely pass..
Some of these comments are strange and don't make sense. Prof. Takahara is one of the most organized professors I've had. She gives notes and outlines, extra practice problems, and prepares you for the ACS final exam. You have to do your part and work hard, but I've always gotten great help during office hours.
Professor Takahara was the first teacher I've had that was always available to help her students. She even went out of her way to hold a back to basic class for those who were struggling and it helped tremendously.
Dr. Takahara is a good professor, as long as you pay attention.
Prof. Takahara is honestly one of the best chemistry professors on campus. While the entirety of the semester was a struggle, I do believe it was more or less the content rather than the professor. Be sure to read the textbook, pay attention in lecture, and develop good study habits for the ACS exam (such as doing problems in under 2 minutes).
The exams are extremely hard. There will be retakes because everyone usually fails . Dont put yourself so down because its a hard class. Honestly study the acs book. Do the packet problems. Do the extra credit . Pay attention always. I dont recommend taking her at all but if its your last choice, be ready to put your all.
Clear, concise lectures. I'm actually paying attention in chemistry for once. You have to work for an A but I would not mind taking her again. Her attendance policy scares me
gives almost 100 bonus points. exams can be hard if you dont practice the content however exams are always curved. shes alway super helpful if you go into office hours and ask for help
Her class is genuinely hard but it prepares you for classes at UMD. They are about he same level of difficulty
Professor Takahara's class was the best class I have taken at MC. She hands out lecture notes that are kind of like outlines, so it's easy to take notes in class. The tests are on the harder side, but the grading is generous and fair. You have to take the ACS test for the final. Her tests and worksheets get you ready.
My experience taking Prof. Takahara for Chem131 was great. I only took the class because of transfer requirements but she made everything simple and easy to understand. The lectures were extremely organized so It was very helpful since my initial chemistry knowledge was minuscule.
I had to retake chem131 for grad school. I took it 10 yrs ago and got a B. Dr. Takahara is so clear and I left class with a really good understanding of CHEM. She records her lectures and I rewatched them multiple times. I prob would've gotten a C without that. She uses ALEKS as HW: a lot of work but worth it b/c it helps u understand. 3 exams.
Dr. Takahara's course was challenging, but it opened me up to education in a new way. This was the first class where I can actually recall the information I learned from a year ago, and it's because of the way the course was taught. She's very accessible(email and office hours), and taking chem with her'll prepare you for what college has to offer!
Takahara will help you succeed and give you the tools you need to make it in your other chem classes. TRUST ME. I have taken chem 3 times and this was my third time and I got an 84%. She knows what she is doing and follows the book. I highly suggest you take her class!
Dr. Takahara is a true academic. She is such a good teacher. Her exams are challenging but if you're here to learn, you will do just fine. Her lectures are very clear and she records them. She is very accessible and responsive. You have to work hard to keep up but she will really help you along the way. ALEKS is a lot of work so don't stay behind.
Dr. Takahara gives good feedback and gave us many chances to re-do work. She goes very quickly in lecture, but it is a lot of material and she covers it all. She records lectures (rewatch them!) ALEKS is very important to keep up on to do well. I feel she is genuinely proud of her students. She is very busy so O.H. meetings are brief/to the point.
Goes through the lectures fast and doesn't make sure her students are following. If you get lost (likely), you'll have to use outside resources. Tests are nothing like lectures and she purposefully tries to trick you. Says you don't need calc but she makes you do a lot of extra math. Would never take again, especially if chem is new for you :)
She is a rather difficult professor and, while extra credit occurs, it is not enough. I can say that we don't mesh because my learning style is different (Disability). If you need someone to take their time on material or to explain it differently than a textbook then I do not recommend her. Tests are also really REALLY hard.
Dr Takahara's teaching style isn't for everyone - YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK. If you are a proactive student that comes to class prepared, she can clearly answer any questions you have. If you want a teacher to drag you through the semester, she isn't it. Extra credit and cancelling test questions that everyone missed boosted my overall grade by 7%.
we were all always confused. on the final she used stuff from an entirely different class. study guide didn't match at all
everyone failed the final.
It's such a confusing class... DON'T take this professor if you want to earn your grade based on your studying. No one did well on the final and half of the exam was from Chem131. Practice exams do not even match the exams and final.
goes over one thing in lecture and the exams will reflect that. need to pay tf attention so you can understand the material and do so much practice. beware of the final, mine was more content based and not really what we did in class. will give EC and curves, and has a sensible/comprehensible way of organizing material. overall 5/10
The lectures were a bit too fast paced at times, but she recorded every class and make the recordings available. The tests were really hard. There was not a lot of homework, so you need to do problems outside of class to do well.
