Dr. Turner is really nice and very helpful, but this class is A TON of work. A quiz every week plus a 4-page paper, but at least there's no final- very top heavy class. She grades kind of hard but you can rewrite your essays before you turn them in for the final. Took this as a GE and liked it a lot
good course, very interesting, prof is personable and nice if you try in/out of class. she is awesome! super cool final - no exam. class is hard work - you get used to it/learn how to manage your time (4 pg paper and 1 quiz per week), no real work for last 2/3 weeks of class.
good teacher very clear and precise
This class is a TON of work, scrapbook assignments everyweek and online quizes every other week, Plus long long reading assignments for every class. She knows her stuff but moves fast and doesn't make it clear what you should be taking notes on.
Professor Turner is awesome! She is so knowledgable and her class teaches you organization skills, time management, helps you be able to understand challenging material, and helps you take the information you learned and apply it to the real world. At first I thought it was going to be too hard, but it's my favorite class and I've learned so much.
Dr. Turner presented a very organized and structured class. Everything is run on D2L and the class runs according to schedule. Readings can be lengthy and pile up so stay on top of things. She uses tons of different presentation techniques which is nice. Do not fall behind or you will be in trouble. Assignments, quizes, exams are all essay based.
I never read a single article for this class and never studied for anything and ended up with B+
There is a LOT of reading in this class, some of it very difficult and lengthy - STAY ON TOP OF IT! I found the course as a whole very interesting. PREPARE FOR THE FINAL (40% of grade!)! You pretty much get the final 2 wks ahead of time - but its hard! Take advantage of that time! I didn't and it dropped me a whole letter grade from an A to a B.
TONS of reading in this class. The amount of material we're expected to keep track of is so far beyond me, and the tests (midterm and final) are ridiculously hard. They are totally open tests; you have to explain your answer for everything. This class was way too much work for a 100 level class. The teacher as a person is very nice and helpful.
There is a ton of assigned reading but I got by not reading it at all! Ended up with a B without cracking the textbook. Really nice teacher and grades papers sooo eaisly. Really reccomend this class to all who want an easy A.
Don't take this class if you're looking for something easy, it's EXTREMELY demanding! There's so much reading that it takes away from how interesting the class could be. Quizzes and online discussions every couple of weeks, a midterm that's 20% of the grade, and a group project/presentation that's 30%. It's doable but way too time-consuming.
Very helpful teacher, always willing to assist in writing a paper, or studying for a quiz. Online quizzes are somewhat difficult, just follow the provided study guides. If you check out her office hours she will greatly assist projects, and in the book report you do. Enjoyed the class!
Good professor. Very helpful outside of class. For those of you taking 192: Don't worry about the grade. Online quizzes, an easy midterm + final, and then a relatively easy final project. Don't buy the books she wants you to - it's only one chapter out of each. Interesting class. She only counted attendance for group projects at end of semester.
The class was a little overwhelming to begin with but eventually got better. She is very, very helpful and clear. She uses D2L a lot and there is also a lot of readings. The quizzes were kind of hard but if you do the readings they are a piece of cake. Class isn't mandatory but it is a good idea to go to the lectures. It's a pretty easy A.
The quizzes are tough but the midterm and final are easy A's. One final group project, not too tough. It's pretty much impossible to get below a B+ in this class. Don't bother buying the books, they are really unnecessary. I paid $30-40 for them and never used them. All information you need to know from them she will talk about in class.
The class was one of the best history classes I have ever taken. Turner knows her stuff and does her best trying to make sure her students understand as well. The only bad thing about the class is that every Tuesday there is a quiz with the i-clickers on the week before lectures. Go to class and you'll get at least a B+. She's a good teacher!
midterm and final are a must study for. alot more on theories than just names and dates. tough for a 100 level class but if you like history than its for you. Alot of reading but you can avoid most of it but its helpful to read them for studying for tests and she likes those dumb iclickers. so you got that going for you
If you listen in lecture and do the reading, you will get an A.
She is one of the most dedicated professionals I ever had the chance of working with.
She is a super nice teacher who will help anyone who asks her for help. Hardest level 100 class I've taken. Quizzes are easy but tests and the final were really hard.
The class isn't bad, but there is no textbook so attendance is vital. She is helpful, but the material is dull. Weekly quizzes that are relatively easy. Her tests are bizarre. One I ace, the next I fail. Also, it is possible that she is the slowest grader of all time. Literally takes like 3 weeks to get scantron tests back to us.
This class was ridiculous. Her lectures are dull and very fast paced. She often tries to cram a lot of information into the last 5 min. A LOT of readings. Tests are very difficult. Not many people scored above a B. I do not recommend this class.
Turner is very slow uploading reading assignments, lecture outlines, grades and feedback on D2L and it is rather frustrating at times. She knowss what shes teaching but if you are struggling with her weekly clicker quizzes or 4 midterms, go to the study sessions every friday. midterms come mostly from quiz questions.
I really liked her and thought she was a great professor... however... very little of our work over the whole semester has been graded and it's a little annoying. Overall though, she's great and I'd recommend her.
Boo! Clicker quizzes gave me the most trouble since the wording is so strange. She is also very slow in giving feedback and getting grades back. Disorganized but competent. Assignments are useful only in the sense that they show up on quizzes and tests. Extremely difficult and frustrating class. Take only if you are willing to commit loads of time.
Turner is very intelligent and can talk your ear off for hours about french history. She is absolutely useless returning grades. Still havent seen my midterm or two of my early semester small 4 page papers. Avoid if possible
Professor Turner is awesome! She's one of my favorite professors at UWEC. Interesting lectures, fair grader, great person... overall you will learn a lot! My one complaint is she takes a long time to grade papers and midterms.
Easily the worst class I have ever taken. Boring. Lots of reading. Long, difficult paper.
clicker quizzes are awful. topics are unclear. never really get any notes for this class, just vague outlines. exams hard also.
She is very unhelpful and disorganized. The clicker quizzes are ridiculous and so are the tests. She takes FOREVER to get homework back. This class isn't hard if you spend A LOT of time doing it. But I would say it is way too much work for a 100 level course. I would never recommend taking Turner again.
Terrible! I received a B+ in this class but you really have to earn it. There are quizzes both Monday and Friday and the ones on Monday are impossible to get above a 8 out of 10. Class average is usually a 6. She has good intentions but just misses in every possible way. Avoid this professor if you can!
Do not take Turner for Origins of Current World Conflicts! You do not cover anything at all that is current. We spent weeks on the French revolution because she loves France. The work load is not that bad aside from all of the reading that you have to do. It's like she doesn't think you have to worry about work for other classes. Bad class to take.
Origins of Current World Conflicts?? No, this class is about France and human rights. Nothing really about current world conflicts. An extreme amount of reading every week and many unreasonable questions to answer for one quiz on one of the questions. Ridiculous The clicker quizzes are made to confuse you.. Tests Hard annoying class
I loved this class. Dr. T, as she likes to be called is very clear and easy to understand. Writing tests are easy because you get to use a page of notes, clicker quizzes are a bit tricky however. Go to class and print of lectures and you'll be fine. VERY interesting class, opened my eyes to a lot of different things going on in the world.
Seeing her in person makes you want to shoot yourself afterwards-- she demands a lot of time from you, so if its time that you can't devote to her she will make sure you feel terrible about it. She can criticize until you cry! Which does not help motivate. I work hard for her to no avail...
Hated this class..Not really about history, seems the focus is more on human rights and ideologies. Tons of reading on random articles and lots of group work. Gets confusing with multiple different groups in the class.
Questions from exams come from clicker quizzes and lecture notes, so make sure you show up on Mon.! Req. readings are online (mostly) and she goes over them in class - material usually shows up on quizzes. She has a bizarre fascination with France, so everything comes back to it. Terrible with feedback/ grades. Very friendly.
Completely surprised by Dr. Turner, did not expect to enjoy this class this much. I am a science person at heart, but Dr. Turner made me regret not having a minor in History. Fantastic teacher who really knows her stuff, and is clearly a great mind. What's more she is good at teaching in addition to being a very knowledgeable person.
This was an online class - Current World Conflicts. We studied more about socialism & French Revolutions and issues in the 1600-1700s, current conflicts very brief! Tests were all timed and extremely difficult, the final was ridiculous with half being essay questions. Grading was very subjective & unfair. I would NOT recommend this class at all!!
This class is a lot of work. She gives you plenty of time for the bigger things like essays because there are other things that need to be done every week. Overall, I've learned so much in this class and we cover several topics. Dr. Turner is a very knowledgeable and passionate professor.
Dr. T is very personable and gets along with everyone. She gives really relevant assignments, but you have to be in class to do them. They're easy, though. She gives you good feedback and usually lets you out of class early!
I was excited to be in this class because I love to talk about things that are CURRENTLY going on in the world. Turns out, this class is anything but current world conflicts. You will be talking about the Enlightenment, old philosophers, WWI and II, none of it ties together. Dr. Turner is a nice person, especially in office hours. Utilize those.
She might not be the most easy grader, but she really wants you to learn and understand the material. She is always willing to help and provides pretty good communication. Would recommend.
I WOULD NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR PROFESSOR! During the final, she came in 15 minutes late, almost half the class didn't finish in the amount of time offered, and it was primarily short (long) answer-written questions. You have to read all the lectures outside of class and she "goes over them in class". So unclear, and confusing. Not helpful.
Interesting class, but definitely not an easy grade. It's basically a chronology on conflicts throughout history using different models to analyze them. Test question answers can sometimes differ from what the lecture said. Also many test questions are multiple choice'A, B, C, A and C, or All of the above' format. If you work hard you will succeed
Professor Turner cares about her students and is more than willing to help you outside of class. I thought this class would be relatively easy, but it is my hardest one. Her tests are multiple choice and are pretty difficult in my opinion. She gives you a study guide that helps but you definitely need to study a lot.
This class was okay.. The group project really sucks and she makes you do a lot of unnecessary work for it. She takes this class too seriously for a 100 level class. Wasn't the worst class wasn't the best. I got a B without really putting any work into it.
Course is much too difficult for a 100 level class. I studied and still did poorly on her tests. She is condescending and expects too much. Her lectures drag on and she goes on tangents that you won't be tested on. She is also very scattered. By far the worst class I've taken at UWEC.
Great lecturer! However, power points are just simple bullet points and you are expected to get all the details from her. Which gets pretty difficult because she talks fast and lacks organization in presentation, gets off topic pretty quick. Gives very detailed study guides before exams. Would recommend finding a more straight forward class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR TEACHER. Such an awful experience. This topic should not have been turned into a class. Prof is condescending and unhelpful. Consistently working on 2 papers at a time as well as additional out of class readings. She assigns a project that is mainly used to populate HER website. Complains about grading and late feedback.
Very disappointed with this class. Turner ruined the subject for me. She complains about how long it takes her to grade papers and uses that as justification for late and short feedback. On top of this she is very condescending. She is no help with questions, instead she just tries to prove her own intelligence. 100 lvl class taught at 400 lvl.
This class was a struggle. You can tell Dr. T is passionate about history, especially the French Revolution. Half of the week is on lectures and the other is on group projects. Iclicker questions are mostly with the lecture. YOU HAVE TO READ BEFORE GOING INTO LECTURE. So much reading. Tests are difficult. Personally, I wouldn't take it again...
Turner was a very good professor, her lecture notes are available online, which I felt was very nice. This allowed me to do my homework ahead of time, which increased my participation (clicker questions) grade.
Very tough, get ready to read a lot of lectures as well as do 1,000 other things at once. Lectures were kind of hard to follow.
She is one of the most annoying professors I've ever had and makes this class so much harder than it needs to be. Every single thing in this class is group based. The tests are super hard even when you study. She teaches the class in the least helpful way and makes it confusing and painful to be in class.
I found Dr. Turner to be someone who really enjoys history and wants you to enjoy it too. I never needed to read the textbook to understand the material or do well on tests, but I find history an easier course. She helps you find primary sources for your final group paper if you are struggling and she really takes the time to help you out.
Probably one of the most frustrating classes I've taken. It's difficult to earn a 10/10 on her weekly group discussions, and her tests are way more difficult than they need to be. Had I known this class was going to be such a pain I would have never taken it.
This is a 100 level class and I can tell you I have never studied more for any other class. Her lectures are crazy long and no one knows what she is rambling on about. Her slides are just little bullet points. The only way you get a decent grade is if you read 3 hours every week in the textbook. She annoys me..
She's nice, but really likes the sound of her own voice. I was in a three hour class with her and she drones on and on. She also isn't great at clear grading expectations. I always do very well at papers, and get mediocre grades through her. I wouldn't take this Professor again, she makes things more difficult for no reason.
Very nice and caring Professor. Need help? Just ask and she will guide you. She is not a bad professor, her class material is just a little tough. Lecture readings can get long so do not get behind. You get out what you put into this class.
Dr. T is nice, but this class was a lot of work for a 200 level class. I studied for hours for the midterms and got C's on both. Luckily she lets you drop one and count the final more if you want to. LOTS of reading, but you don't even have to do most of it since she lectures about the topics anyways.
This teacher is basically insane. She has a large number of ideas relating to her own theories of how things are or should be, and is entirely unable to present these to the class without veering off into her own train of thought. If you have an idea that does not dovetail with hers, then she will not accept it.
The class topic is very interesting to learn about. There is a ton of assigned reading that you have to do because there are writing assignments or quizzes every single week on the readings. The midterms are based on the readings too. The papers are based off a primary source, not super difficult papers to write though.
SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. YOU HAVE TO READ 10 PAGES OF STUFF BEFORE EVERY CLASS.
It should say something that I couldn't find a tag that works for this professor. She's clearly knowledgeable on the subject but has no clear means or ability to deliver that information to students. She will present powerpoints in class that contain next to no information. Our midterm covered everything from 1500-1917 and was six weeks in.
Took the course looking for an easy-ish history class to finish off a few loose ends, I ended up in a 100 level history class taught at a 400 level. There was a lot of content slammed into every lecture with little to no points to write down on the slides. Plus she said that there would be extra credit for some roles in the game but never gave it
This is a class that is lecture heavy. She talks a lot, but if you pay attention you should do decent on test (if you take notes/study it will be easier). Lot of extra credit after every lecture, so that is nice. Technically there is a lot of reading, but usually you can skim until you get the gist of it and not actually read.
If you find history to be interesting, this is a good class. There is a lot of reading, but it is very manageable. Tests are easy enough and she makes clear what she expects you to know. Extra credit opportunities are plentiful, take advantage. She gives individualized feedback before you turn in the main project, which is very helpful.
Dr. Turner is very knowledgeable and has been one of my favorite professors to have. You definitely need to pay attention and take thorough notes but she makes it easy to do well in her class.
Dr. Turner is very knowledgable about history and does what she can to help students succeed. However, this was a 100 level course and I've never had to do so much work or spend so much time on a class like this before. I learned a lot, but this class was honestly taught at a 300/400 level.
Tons of weekly reading and the lectures kind of go on forever but are interesting. There is also an online weekly discussion. The mid-terms are take home but they are essays. There is also a huge final historiographical paper. Super hard but she gives individual feedback on it. Overall very interesting class but you have to work for your grade.
Note that I can only speak in regards to Honors 138, History in Fiction and Fiction in History. I have not taken any of her other classes, so my complaints may be limited to just this class. Now I'm not a fast reader, but she assigns what I would consider ridiculously long readings. Three times, she has assigned us an entire book to read in a week.
Other than the homework for the discussions every week, the midterm is two essays and the final is another two essays that are longer as well as a 10 page critical review essay that is due on the same day. You have no idea what your grade is the entire time because she doesn't grade anything until after the semester. good luck...
This was the hardest 100 level course I've taken at UWEC. She is a very smart individual and clearly knows what she's talking about but the material is choppy and hard to understand. She puts trick questions on her tests and there is LOTS of in-class group work. I don't recommend taking her class.
There are professors at the university that want you to succeed and will help you prepare. This professor is NOT one of them. She will throw in trick questions and is very ominous and vague regarding the final exam. Lots of outside of class work and in class is all group work.
Dr. Turner is a decent choice. There is not too much work, but the tests are hard. Be ready to pay close attention during lectures and put in some good studying time. The material is interesting and she teaches it pretty well. She is knowledgeable about the content and is good at teaching it. She is also helpful and approachable. Overall, not bad.
One day I showed up for class late after going home to be with my family because I had a family member pass away and I forgot to sign in for group discussion so she dinged me very badly. I tried emailing her to get the points back and she basically told me that it doesnt matter what happens in my personal life I have to check in. Very rude.
Professor Turner is a fine professor but the class is awful. Unless you need it or are a history geek dont take it. Lectures are very long and boring. You are assigned 30+ pages of reading weekly. The midterm and final essays arent bad the class is just boring unless you love history.
Dr. Turner is available to students, but getting grades back was a struggle. The final is a big paper that takes a long time, but it is a history class. Some lectures were confusing, but she's a very nice person. I think she would be great in other history courses, but I think this class just sucks and that's not her fault. Slow grader though
Dr Turner is a wonderful professor for learning how to do research as a historian. This class is challenging and has two longer papers. She was always available to meet and accommodate time outside of her office hours. Just reach out!! She truly cares about her students and wants all of them to succeed. Grades slowly depending on the class size.
HIST288 is a difficult class but rewarding if you put in the necessary time and effort. Don't hesitate to reach out for help from Dr. Turner or the archivists in the library if you are feeling overwhelmed or stuck. The only main downside of this class was that many of the assignments were not graded until the very end of the semester.
There is no textbook for the class so she teaches what she wants based on the topic. Lectures very fast so you can't get the notes and don't post the lectures for almost a week so by then you already forget about the previous lecture. Group discussions are critical and she grades very strict. Would not take this class again w
I think that Dr. Turner's class was fairly easy, however it is mostly memorization for the exams. I did find it frustrating how a lot of our assignments were not graded for LONG after we completed them and if we were done with class early she kept us there like we were kids. Overall a very nice person, however lectures were very long.
This professors powerpoint are very poorly written so if you miss class you won't have a good understanding of what's going on. The final is 5 essay questions 400 words each and u need sources and only get 3 hours to do it and you don't know the prompts until you click start test, No one got 100%. she also gives out misinformation on other subjects
My problem is that I am a soc ed major, and I had to take this course. I do not see how it will benefit me. That is not her problem though. But most of her in class lectures were pointless, then would give us no time to work on the assignments. Which none of knew how to do because she never taught us.
Omg, this class was not good. She rarely grades things, and we have 3 papers due by our final exam, as well as mandatory attendance for the final exam time. Because she never graded anything or gave feedback on her expectations, it was impossible to write on her weirdly worded questions. Do not take this class.
She has still not released my midterm grade the week before finals week. Most of the assignments are based on reading done outside of class, only two essays are based on in class lectures. There is a lot of reading and a lot of writing, and she does not always give very clear instructions. She really knows a lot about and loves the material.
