right.. is this philosophy? or psychology, i forget??
Such an easy course - could easily be philosophy!
Incoherent prof who makes stats much harder and confusing than it needs to be.
He didn't read his own course description - this isn't an essay course!
Missed his calling as a stand-up comedian - wastes time with irrelevant stories
show up to the 2nd hour of class - maybe by then he'll ve gotten to the point
good course notes, interesting approach
Delusional, incoherent, but friendly - kind of like a crazy uncle.
He's quite boring. A really nice guy I'm sure but didn't keep me interested. Stopped going to class...
Biased, unorganized, loses student work; avoid at all costs!
If YOU are a mute who sits in class and doesnt want to participate, wouldnt recommend him. If you want to be stimulated, say something in class and have fun debating. The more you talk, the higher your mark, the more you'll enjoy the course, noJoke
Honestly, this guy is sooooo boring. He wastes so much class time telling stupid pointless stories. He's also rude when it comes to asking for help. Basically if you don't find him wildly entertaining, you're screwed, marks wise.
Terrible prof. Half the time he didn't even talk about the course content. He clearly had not interest in teaching this course. He was shocked that his class did not do well on exams, but did nothing to correct the lack of knowledge. Just really bad.
Given the content of the course, he does a great job in teaching the material. He was always available to help and offered great advice on projects. I would recommend him to serious students. In fact, I am even taking another course with him this fall!
nice guy but brutally boring class. all lectures online, straight from the book - can stop going altogether and still do well.
A professor who truly cares about his students: he responds promptly to emails; his exams have clear, understandable questions; he takes the time to get to know his students!
The class is painfully boring, and his explanations are quite hard to understand. Exam is fair and decently laid out. He tries to accomodate you if you have a problem. Going to the lab section with your TA is the best bet. It shouldn't even be called a lab, since it's more like a tutorial.

Is inconsistent in his methods of teaching and organization. Poor in his explanations of concepts.
His tests are fair & he posts lecture slides online, but his classes are BRUTAL. All he does is flirt with all the hot girls in class, and talk about irrelevant content, and about how he hates cats. It's kind of funny, but attendance in his class is borderline useless (unless you are a hot girl).
This is the second time that I have Dr. Brown, and I hope to have him again. He is a fantastic prof and truly cares about his students.
What an outstanding class. Dr.Brown is a wealth of knowledge and enjoys passing down his knowledge to any student willing to listen and learn.
worst prof ever!!
TERRIBLE!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! He was the worst prof I had in my entire undergrad. Always late for class, very unhelpful, talked about random things, and the mark was unrelated to your ability - just to whether he liked you or not!
I took his class years ago and loved it. Patrick cares about his students enough to meet me on a Saturday morning to help me (almost 10 years ago). He still remembers me by name and offers me (good) advice regarding my career. You stand out in my mind as one of the most down to earth, caring profs I had at UWO. Thank you.
he honestly does not stay on topic AT ALL, he is rude to students and smirks and laughs when you try to participate during his lecs. He is the worst prof i have ever had. AVOID AT ALL COST!
His exams are fair and really not difficult. The class average after each exam appears to be over 72 which is not bad at all. Also, he really wants to help his students and has always time to meet with and chatt about everything and anything. If you want to meet a prof who understands student's needs and concerns, you will enjoy him as a teacher
A good prof overall. I agree that he seemed rude and arrogant in the first class but he just enjoyed discussion. Exams aren't difficult although some quesitions asked for details. Lecture notes which I studied like crazy never appeared on exams. Just read and study the textbook and you will get an A.
The exams are very reasonable, and the lectures are organized and clear. I thought he was a good prof overall.
Seemed prett rude and arrogant at times. Doesn't balance discussions and levturing very well. Sometimes a bit agressive with responding to you. Tests were overall not too bad but sometimes just too detailed, the type you roll your eyes at during the test. He's ok to take, but just be warned, some don't like him
One of the best profs I have ever had. Students who call him "rude" are just plain STUPID. He is so kind, and really encourages participation. A genuinely nice human being, and teacher who actually cares about LEARNING. Can't say enough about him!
A really nice man. Completely edits your essays before you hand them in so you get an A . He taught me how to write! Actually takes the time to help his students. Exams were always fair. He's definitely not rude but he IS scattered. He lost my exam mark and then asked me what it was, and he also lost my friend's essay a few years ago.
Best prof I've ever had. Brilliant, great lecturer, and so damn interesting. Brown is the best prof at Western.
I had Dr. Brown for 280 and 336. I can honestly say that he is the source of my motivation for being in psychology. Rarely will you find a teacher who challenges and encourages you at the same time. If you put the effort into learning from him, you won't be disappointed. Also, he is hilariously absent-minded.
Best prof at western. Has some very deep insight. Not the easiest marker, but the experience alone is worth it.
Snore. His lectures are very well organized, and his tests are reasonable if you go to class and do readings. One of the most arrogant, self-absorbed professors I've had. Interaction with students is condescending and sarcastic unless you are one of his handful of favorites he knows by name; lecturing to undergrads seems only to fuel his ego.
This was an online course, so I didn't get much contact with him. He seems very arrogant and cares more about shoving his opinion into your mind than allowing you to form your own. He does, however, answer questions quickly on WebCT.
Best professor at Western. If you take a 3rd or 4th year course with him, he will blow your mind and make your university experience worthwhile. Changed my life.
He seems fairly concerned about his students. He really likes to start up class discussions, but I do see how his opinion can be seen as domineering and arrogant by some. Rambles wayy too much about random stuff. I don't understand why he gives us essay questions on exams while other sections don't have em. Kinda unfair.
He is a really nice guy and really cares about his students but his TA doesn't go to lecture and is RIDICULOUSLY hard so you will regurgitate exactly what he said on exams and will do badly. No one did well in this class. Also, his class gets essay questions (which were impossible) and the other classes just got multiple choice. NOT FAIR!
Dr. Brown's lectures are very boring to listen to. He is not a very good lecturer, but is very helpful with one-on-one attention. I would strongly suggest going to his office hours.
I took the course online after what I heard about his lectures. However, his 12 page lecture notes are just as boring. Couldn't decide if he was funny/sarcastic or just plain arrogant. Essay topics took 2 pages to explain and were graded extremely harshly. Exams were tricky. To top it all off, the subject was awfully dry.
He's a great prof, considering all he gets to talk about is boring stats and methods stuff. I like his sense of humour but it gets on some people's nerves. Tests are very fair and basically you get what you study for. If you're in 2800 watch out for his TA though, ridiculously hard marker nicknamed "the hammer". Overall great prof though.
Professor Brown is a great prof. Although he's rather old school and has quite difficult exams, he puts all the answers right in front of you. Very willing to help out, even when he's busy. Make use of his office hours as this is when you see the true brilliance of this prof. He is a dedicated educator.
Horrible teacher, doesnt care at all about his students and is sooooooo lazy!!!!
Overall good professor. Tries to make lectures interesting. Likes class interaction. Exams are reasonable, not too hard. Have to study textbook and lectures.
good luck if you take a course with him 8)
Very nice guy. You can tell he enjoys his job and takes a big interest in his students. The material isn't easy, but I still would recommend his courses - he was easy to talk to and always happy to help.
Incredibly arrogant and unkind. Worst prof I have encountered in university. Although he has been known to work with students outside of class and offer extra help, mostly he is very condescending towards those who don't understand the material right away. His lectures are often off topic and self indulgent. Avoid him like the PLAGUE.
honestly, one of the best teachers I have ever had in university. So kind and compassionate. If you don't understand something, go straight to his office. HE WILL DO ANYTHING POSSIBLE to help you. The course is easy and if you read the book and the lectures, you'll pass with a great mark. Amazing teacher overall.
Moderately intersting course, textbook use was shotty, moderately hard exams. ALSO, there are required essays that shouldn't even be a part of the course because it wasn't marked as an essay course, so kinda misleading there...You can do well if you put the work in though!
I didn't like this professor. I had a mandatory psychology class with him and found him a monotonous guy that goes off topic regularly. He expects to get through about 70-100 slides and keeps you the full 3 hours everytime. I also took another class which I was excited to take (sens and percep) and was disappointed again by the off topic monotony.
awful. boring. tried my best to attend classes... but couldn't. talked about his wife and children a lot.
While the lectures can carry on and go off topic at times, Doctor Brown has without a doubt been one of, if not THE most helpful professor I've ever had. If you make an effort to learn, he will reciprocate with a lifetime of knowledge and helpfulness. Dr. Brown wants his students to do well, and it shows.
He will go above and beyond to make sure that you understand. Such a great professor, he really cares about his students and makes an effort to keep everyone on the same page. Sometimes goes off on a tangent but makes up for it by learning people's names.
Frequently goes off topic. Not a fantastic speaker. Reasonably clear. Tests had inconsistent difficulty and an entire chapter (eight) was taken off the final exam; however, he neglected to tell any of the students this before the exam. I ended up wasting so much time studying stupid mnemonics. Overall, he is an ok prof but he isn't the best.
Very helpful and easy to understand. Made me hate this class a lot less!
Dr. Brown brings a very clear understanding on what is expected of you in the literature aspect of the research world. Good professor if you get to know him
If you are one of those people like me who are depressed for any mark below A+, then this course WILL depress you. I agree that he's passionate about teaching, but he throws in this essay component on midterms which makes it essentially impossible to get over 90% (unless you're one of those English people).
One word should do it: terrible. I'm a nerd and Im getting A+s in my other courses, but this course is just unbelievably brutal. The amount of assigned reading is just out of sanity. Not to mention how BORING the textbook is. This course with this prof made me become a heavy smoker
Dr. Brown is a wonderful professor. He cares about his students and wants to help them succeed; he is always willing to give a hand to anyone who asks. I did not find the amount of readings unreasonable as it 'is' a university course. A side note: he seems to have a love for dogs (judging from his powerpoints). Study well and you're golden.
Really nice prof!! He is very approachable and is always willing to answer students questions. Tries to make the dry subject a little more interesting! Overall, really nice man!
Extremely boring lecture, he gets off topic and the entire class ends up being a discussion, the lab component has very vague guidelines for assignments
Dry class and his soft voice may lull you to sleep during lecture. HOWEVER, he does try his best to engage the class (makes jokes, uses pictures in his slides) is very helpful and a cute man overall! Material sucks to study because it's boring but exams are pretty straightforward. Make sure to do the readings and try to laugh at his jokes!
Take 2800 with Dr. Brown and you'll easily get >90% if you study a bit. You don't even have to go to his lectures, which are very boring. His tests are very easy as long as you read the textbook.
I used to go to his office hours for extra help pretty much every week and he was always willing to offer help. By the end of the year, you'll learn how to be a better communicator and be an effective writer. My writing skill was terrible, but I've improved a lot. Dr. Brown will get you ready for upper year psychology courses. Guaranteed.
The most dry class I have ever taken in 4 years of university. Do not take this class. He is actually a very nice guy, and willing to help all of his students, but his speaking style is incredibly boring, and his tests are unfair.
The class was good, but be ready for debates. His opinion may not match that of the textbook authors so he might talk more about his opinion than theirs, but tests you equally on both
Dr. Brown is a highly underrated professor - don't let the slightly monotonous voice fool you. I had him for 2135 as well. If you attend his lectures and actually do the readings it really pays off. He is EXTREMELY clear and never makes you feel stupid for asking a question. He always remembers me and gave me great advice on my honours thesis.
One of the best professors I have had the pleasure of knowing. He is incredibly intelligent and well-read, which makes his lectures even more interesting. Although this course may not appeal to everyone I found it to be extremely interesting and intellectually challenging. Great class and even better professor!
One of the best professors. As long as you see him during his office hours, he will tell you exactly what he wants and edit your paper as many times as necessary. His voice is pretty monotone, but he is very funny and sincerely cares about his students. Just show that you care as well and you will be fine!!!
Patrick Brown is a very condescending professor. He is unhelpful during office hours and put me down as a student (personally). Besides that, his midterms and exams were very textbook based and easy to study for.
Very dry material, but Prof. Brown did try to make it more interesting. Lectures are very long and quite dull, and sometimes not even worth attending, as everything in the slides is basically straight out of the textbook (with exceptions, which is detailed in syllabus). A lot to read, but overall, useful course.
Brown is an excellent prof but this course is extremely aggravating. Essays you hand in are returned them with few corrections/suggestions, and even less rationale for your mark that doesn't seem blatantly made up on the spot. You can demonstrate all the knowledge in the world but lose 5% on your whole paper for not capitalizing a letter somewhere.
Patrick Brown is an Excellent Professor. He is very clear with his lecture material and often clarifies material in the textbook that is hard to understand. There are 3 exams that are textbook based, and the exams are very fair. Overall, he is very nice and knows what he is talking about.
I am very disappointed that Dr. Brown uses the terms "mental retardation" and "Oriental" to describe intellectual disabilities and Asian people. A professor should not use such outdated, derogatory terms in his lectures. The lectures are dull, the textbook is awful, and the average on the first exam was low. I wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Brown is a great professor. I wasn't a fan at the beginning of the year-- he's quiet and makes small jokes. As the year went on you can see that he is caring and wants you to do well. Methods is a dry course, so it won't move mountains but he does the job quite well.
Dr. Brown may not be the most interesting professor you'll meet at Western, but Patty is still amazing in his own way. He may be a bit monotoned during his lecture but he throws in some jokes from here to there that are subtle and unexpected, and sometimes he may be downright savage. If you see him during office hours, he's extremely helpful!
He is very soft-spoken and not at all engaging so lectures seem to drag on forever. Roughly 70% of exams qs come from the textbook so read carefully. Dr. Brown lectures on theories that he supports and refuses to acknowledge any other theories. He always arrives 2 minutes prior to class and only gives a 5 minute break during a 3-hour lecture.
The lectures just went over every aspect of the readings we already read and understood, so they were not very interesting. This prof was extremely absent-minded and extremely unreliable in his duties such as marking things in a timely manner and providing feedback.
Monotonous lectures paired with extremely boring material results in a difficult class. In person, he's a great guy that will help you out in any way he can, but his examinations are difficult. Poorly designed course, pretty much 2 courses in 1 due to the lab components and the lectures.
He will make appointments to assist you before exams if you ask him. He was very supportive and very helpful. No, his lectures are not super exciting and he's not always "politically correct" but teaches facts (whether you like them or not important to him). Read the textbook carefully for a 90+, answers to questions are word for word from there.
Honestly.... sweet guy and all, but the lectures are awfully boring. I havent gone to 90% of classes because fhey are dreadful
I really enjoyed his lectures. He is a lovely man (as long as you do not chat in class), and he is intelligent and witty. I met him a few times outside of class and he is always willing to help and gives great advice. His exams are difficult and very long (100 questions in 2 hours). The essay/lab component is like taking a second course.
This class is very boring and the lectures are not necessary to go to since most of the tested material is in the textbook. Brown is nice and gets to know the few students who participate, although can sometimes let class participation get off topic and go on for too long instead of lecturing and discussing relevant things for the course.
Worst course I have ever taken. The TA's have no idea what they are doing, the lab portion is a mess and the profs lectures are reading off the powerpoint
