Holy mother of god. The epitome of bad profs. All I could think about was committing suicide while he droned on about unconnected, random thoughts about statistics. It’s a good thing he’s pretty easy.
has good and bad points. has a crazy sense of humor
Random man. Weird sense of humor. Tests are really random as well. Doesn't test on anything from lecture. Had no idea what to study.
I wanted desperatly to drop out of college for fear every prof would be remotely similar. Frustrating and long-winded.

I did not find this class to be what I had expected. Test for the most part did draw directly from either the power points or readings but the questions were not really about important issues. If you know everything detail on the study guide you'll be fine.
this professor did not make sense and i felt like he didn't know what he was talking about most of the time. he was confusing and extremely random. lots of work for a 2 credit class, & he requires you to do three group papers during the quarter which aren't hard, but if you're busy, they're a pain..
Buckley gives too much work for a 2 credit class. The study guide is so overwhelming. He doesn't draw a lot of points from lectures on quizes he draws them out on his readings online that are super long and boring. I would have rather had a book. Yeah too much work for a measly 2 credits not worth i

This class isent as bad as everyone makes it out to be. All you have to do is listen in class and glance over the readings to get a good grade. Plus he is more that willing to help you if you ask for it!
I was very interested in the topics covered in class. Although random, they were very interesting, and he tries to tie them together in the group papers (which are horrible). It is too much work for a 2 credit class. However, I am glad I took it.
I've never had worst teacher: unorganized, dumb sense of humor, boring lectures, horrible testing methods! Great subject, but horrible teacher.
One of the worst classes that I have taken at WWU. Horrible lecture style, very boring, very irrelevant test questions, wish I had dropped the class.
This class is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He talks a whole lot but never says anything. Insane amount of work for 3 credits. Don't do it. Run the other way, and if your in it. I suggest dropping it.
This is buck's favorite class to teach, you can tell, he gets stoked about it. He is a quirky guy for sure. If you cant handle inordinate amounts of work, get angry when teachers go off on tangents dont take the class. Or dont be a wuss and take the class.
Fast pasted weekend class. First off he is a generous guy, brought us food, drink, ect. Also very willing to take time to help. But I had trouble following him for much of the time, and he has bad tendency to interrupt when you try to talk to him.
The key to this guy is knowing how to use him. The quality of his teaching blows hot and cold, one day good, next day lousy. He is boring but knows a lot, communicates strangely. But he will help you. And help you some more.He is very very approachable. As long as you dont mind being interrupted.
He does tend to ramble, but I really enjoyed my classes with him. He's a smart guy, and very interesting. I guess he's an acquired taste, but I'd take another class from him if I could.
This guy can ramble and get off subject for hours!
This is going to be interesting. He seems to like variety. But I can tell this is going to be way too much work for a 2 credit class. His grading is tough too.
Buckley is a good teacher. I like the pace at which he teaches this class.
Okay class. Could be better, could be worse. Unusual character.
Class was fairly interesting subject material, but he is a dry lecturer. Had some group papers for the class but it was never clear what exactly he wanted. Tests were simple multiple choice, straight forward. Side note - he seems to dislike his children, always refering to them in a negative context. Interested if anyone else agrees.
Agree with some of the comments. He has a very strange lecturing style. Can be boring. Never figured out how he grades. I DISAGREE with the comments about his kids. He is POSITIVE about them, almost to the point where it is sickening. He is always talking about how his 7 year old is smart enough for college, etc.
I wonder if he knows anything about Geography at all. A very bizzare individual. Only consolation is that he is very helpful in office hours, unlike many profs who can't wait to get rid of you.
Pretty terrible class. No new material covered, just a basic overview of economic history, environmental studies, and globalization. A few simple group papers plus easy "pop quizzes" to check attendence. Tests were easy...right out of the textbook and off his study guides. Not pleased with this course whatsoever.
Very interesting class. Taught very well by Buckley. Very eccentric.

People tend not to like him because he adds his own bias to economics, but that is not really a valid statement. He is not teaching economics, he is teaching geography and how economics comes into play with it. His class in interesting because we learn why things are located where they are, and where the production centers of the world are located.
It is not a bad class but he presents his own opinions as the the absolute truth which is very annoying. Very dumb sense of humor. Reasonable load, high use of textbook, not a harsh grader but his grading system seems a little random.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. I decided to take the class because I wanted to learn about something new. I left the class after a month still not knowing what GIS is really about or having learned anything at all. He spent class time going off on random tangents about his life and possible irrelevant future situations.
I undertook 312, my first economic geography class. At first it was interesting but the lectures definitely varied from interesting to the point were you are sleeping. the test are based on a DESCRIPTIVE study guide, which answers are mostly from the book, the book isn't covered in class, but he is HOT! stay away, if your not willing to DO WORK!
Go to class and put work into the study guides. Print out slides before class to get the most out of the lecture. Be weary of the group papers and get a good group. All in all good class, pretty dry though and I even love the subject.
uses an ancient textbook that is as out of date as he is
Wow. I though lectures and reading the book was actually supposed to help you with tests. His lectures dont really relate with the book and they have major continuity problems. VERY DRY CLASS. Prepared to be bored
Don't bother going to class. He's very dry and lecture doesn't relate to the test at all. Do the practice questions though, he takes pretty much all the test questions from them. The book was updated and is actually really interesting but has a lot of typos. They're fun to find though!
Buckley was not the most exciting teacher, but very friendly. The class was boring and consist of powerpoints. The exams had the EXACT same questions from the study guides he had online. You don't need to go to the lectures, just print out the study guide, get the answers from the tutorial once a week, and you'll ace it! East GUR!!
If you like the subject and are conversant about the bands "Celtic Frost", "Armored Saint", and "Shotgun Messiah" this professor will give you an A.
Human geography wasn't that hard of a class, all you have to do is get the notes online and fill out the study guides he posts online every week. Patrick was not the most exciting teacher but you will get a laugh out of his class sometimes and you don't need to go to class everyday. Study all the chapter study guides and you will do great!
This class should be a requirement for all freshmen at WWU. What I learned in this class has been discussed in every one of my other classes. I would call this class 'world issues' rather than 'human geography'. Buckley is boring at times, but I have learned it helps to picture him as a pocket professor. He makes the quaintest little six inch man.
his class was mind numbingly dull. i did poorly in the class because it was so hard to go and listen to him drone on about nothing. an easy class but don't bother going, go to study sessions
Dr. Buckley is really hard to listen to! His lectures are really boring and often couldn't remember how to do some of the GIS techniques he was trying to teach us. His TA also took points of on papers for the stupidest minor errors.
Easy class if you read the book and look at the pictures in his lectures
not a bad class, he's just a little spacey.
Nice guy, but the class was really hard. All of his powerpoints, notes, and lecture recordings were online. His tests were mostly multiple choice and a few really really hard fill in the blanks. Make sure you study!
Class is largely easy and you really don't need to show up. Only hard part is memorizing the 60 Q study guides for each chapter that he takes problems from for tests. Occasionally shared controversial world views which i felt was unprofessional. Decently interesting class, learn a variety of kinda interesting things
I wasn't sure what to expect when I took this class. I got a B, but I deserved an A. Lied to us about the date of our midterm. Way too much work for a 2 credit class.Helpful person though. Decent grader. Goto class due to he partially grades on it. Course content is easy. Boring lectures though. But overall decent. 6.8/10
For a GUR, he required too much work for tests. It was a homework assignment in and of itself. He required group projects. He wasn't clear in his presentation or directions. Tests themselves weren't hard, but figuring out what you needed to know was. Looking for a GUR? Look else where. It's not worth sitting through his class.
Really easy class, if you go to lecture and read the text you will do just fine. Prof Buckley is really nice and does his very best to make it easy for his students to do well.
Not the greatest class ever. Project instructions were difficult to fully understand, study guides for single chapters were pages long and readings had little to no connection with in class lectures. Ultimately I did learn some interesting bits and pieces but the class just wasn't cohesive enough to be worth much.
This was one of the easiest classes I have taken at WWU and one of my favorites. If you read the book and go to class you will get an A. Buckley is very friendly. He does have a bit of a sleepy voice though so make sure and bring coffee.
Very boring, yet easy class. I would suggest that you take another GUR option if you wish to learn.
He's interested in what he teaches but somewhat disheveled. Taking this class is good for having a stable backbone and understanding important aspects of history and human evolutions. Pretty good class. He also puts all he's power points and recorded lectures online = AWESOME.
Definitely boring but easy. All you have to do is memorize the answers to the study questions that he posts online. The quizzes and exams all have questions that come from the study packets. Easy GPA booster class
To get an A: Fill out the study questions that he posts online and memorize all of those questions & answers since those will appear on his quizzes and exams. Buckley can be somewhat rude and cranky and he also can't even button his shirt/collars up sometimes so he looks sloppy sometimes when he's in class. If you want an A, take Human Geo!
This guy... I could have taught myself the material because his tests and quizes are copied straight off his study guides. Memorize the guides and you are fine. However, I found the material covered in class excruciatingly dull. If you want an easy A and are INTERESTED in human geography then take this course.
Very unorganized and assigns a lot of busy work. Nice man, but hard class to like.
Absolutely the worst professor I've had at Western, and yes, I have had Maria Chavez. He doesn't lecture, he rambles. Tests are mostly based on study guides for each chapter that follows the material sentence for sentence. There were a total of like 14 study guides for 2 tests. He micro manages group projects. STAY FAR AWAY!
Super easy map making class if you know basic computer skills. Go to class he randomly takes attendance. There are weekly assignments which you create maps as well as one mini quiz and the final is an individual project that you present on the day of the final. He is a little bit all over the place and always forgets stuff, but is a nice guy.
Easy class! Class is interesting and worth going to, definitely more so than the book. Do the extra credit and the study guides, and you will ace the class.
Easy class. Lectures are quite boring however, and he makes some off color remarks occasionally that I can imagine could be offensive to some people.
Easy as long as you study enough for the tests. Really passionate about what he teaches, but tends to trail when he teaches and doesn't make an effort to keep the class interested.
He is one of the worst professors that I have had, the lectures were dull and he tended to ramble, and were a waste of time to attend. The exams were mostly taken from the study guides, but they were several pages and each chapter took hours to do. Buckley was rude and unapproachable and made a habit of calling people out during class.
The single most disappointing professor/teacher I've ever had. Lectures don't relate to assigned readings. Test study guides are several pages long and force you to memorize random facts. He doesn't know how to teach, period. You will learn nothing from him. I feel bad writing this, but people need to be warned for their own good.
Mr. Buckley was not the most exciting professor but he was clear with what he expected and received a good grade.
Had him for a regular human geography class as well as an advanced class on top of it. He's not the most exciting lecturer and likes to take time to tell personal stories. We watched a lot of non-related videos during lectures. As long as you stay on top of the coursework and read the textbook and the powerpoints, you'll do fine.
He's a nice guy but the class is a mess. There are study guides that the tests come from but many of the questions are not in the book or gone over in class. The questions are from the publisher and do not feel cohesive with what is actually learned. The slides are messy and skipped over most of the time. Get ready to google everything. Don't take
took this class for my major, worst professor I've ever had in school period. He was very rude if you asked for help, and his lectures were all over the place and didn't make any sense. His power points are worthless, and he wasted a lot of the class period setting up his technology. Pop quizzes galore, rude, confusing, STAY AWAY FROM HIM
don't take this class. just don't.
If you want info before taking this course, Dr. Buckley's website shows a lot about class expectations - just search "buckley wwu" Wasn't super interesting, I'd rename this class "learning to be patient with ArcMap." Dr. Buckley knows what he's talking about, if you're willing to spend 1-3 hours on the 8 assignments, you're home free
Avoid this professor at all costs. He is very rude and totally unhelpful when you ask for assistance. His lectures make no sense and are full of totally irrelevant information. Study guides are huge, but most of the questions you'll see word for word on tests. Would NOT recommend this professor. Keep your distance if at all possible.
Bummer of a class, really interesting subject but strange teaching style. Great texts, learned mostly from readings. Mandatory participation as he wanted the students to teach the class. Few lectures, mostly focused on student led discussions and presentations. We would have learned much more had he used a different teaching style.
Waste of time, the class and the teacher with your time.
Warning: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO LEARN THE SUBJECT. If you want an easy A, he gives enough extra credit that you can get a good grade without to much work. Terrible lectures, basically unintelligible.
If you have any other options, do not take this professor! As a senior in college, taking a 200 level course should have been simple, but not with this guy! He rants, goes on tangents, and is disrespectful to his students. Prepare to study a whole lot and basically teach yourself, but remember his random facts- they'll be on the test too. Good luck
This class was extremely painful. His lectures were dry, irrelevant, and boring, not to mention he went off on tons of unrelated tangents. He had us check out clickers to use for clicker quizzes that we didn't touch once. If you use his study guides you should be fine on the test. A fairly easy class, but SO BORING.
This class WOULD be interesting and fun to take if anyone but Buckley taught it. He is so unclear on what he expects its maddening and then the work you turn in is never good enough. He references such an array of authors that he expects you to know off the top of your head like he does. So much reading. So much writing. And then a research project
He is unclear in what he wants, but whatever you turn in it won't be correct. Expect to know the authors of the reading by heart and to know every detail they wrote about. Terrifying driver. He like ice cream from Lynden.
He's pretty awful. It was never really clear what we were going to be tested on. He also often said misguided racist things (I'm probably going to official report him to his department). His lectures are very boring and unorganized. He likes the things he has to say for sure, but i doubt he cares a lot about students learning stuff.
Passionate, quirky, good content. And oh so UNORGANIZED. I made the mistake of taking two classes with him in the hopes things would improve with an upper-lvl division course. I was so, so wrong. He is unclear, heavily detail-oriented and haphazard with his organization and expectations which very difficult. Otherwise, I'd rate difficulty 2.
He made an incredibly interesting topic VERY boring. All his assignments were confusing and the tests were pretty hard. Find a different prof to take this interesting class.
Worst professor I've had at Western. I'm sure he's a nice and interesting person outside of the classroom, but he is not fit to be a professor. He's obviously qualified in his field, but he is downright rude to students during lectures, unorganized as heck, and cannot engage a classroom. Do not take a class from him if possible to avoid.
Lectures are often irrelevant to tests and quizzes. Group assignment expectations are unclear and he micromanages. He will be 2 weeks behind in lecture and yet he expects you to have read ahead and will test you on material not yet covered in class at all. Extremely unorganized. Made an interesting subject very dull. DO NOT take this class!
This professor had things so scattered. Due dates didn't line up, he did not respond to my emails. This became a very frustrating quarter. He leaves all comments back as audio responses and he makes you watch so many videos that are very time consuming.
Don't take this class unless you have a lot of spare time and are a freshman. Towards the end of the quarter he swamps you with quiz after quiz and exams barely over a week apart, and the assignments he gives take way too much time to do. Read the text book for every chapter, and this is coming from someone who never has before. Good luck.
I like professor Buckley, but this class was horrible. I passed and it wasn't horribly difficult, but the class was incredibly frustrating. The grades are not available online, only in person. Some classes are important to attend but there are many where you do nothing. Reading helps, but the book is crazy expensive (look on redshelf its cheaper).
Due dates change at random, if you don't go to class you won't know when he randomly assigns homework. Don't ever skip class, but skim the readings before class if you didn't have time to read the whole thing. Go to his office hours frequently to clarify what the expectations are for assignments will help you get higher grades on assignments/tests.
Worst prof, disorganized, doesn't teach but expects you to know minute details of readings or powerpoints he didn't present. Easy until last the 3 weeks when he assigns group essays, projects, powerpoints, and a final exam all at the same time. No in class reminders, no grading on canvas, Avoid this prof at all costs.
The only reason this class was passable is because the assignments are based on external readings and TAs grade them. His lectures are disorganized and his exams are frequent and expect highly detailed information not given in lecture. If you care about your grades, health or happiness, don't take any of Buckley's classes
Ohhh Patty B... his lectures are basically one long hippie rant. His tangents start off, triggered by a word or a thought... not-so-circular. His tests are hard, lecture based... the more into the quarter you go, the more obscure, random facts from the book, will be included. Cool dude though. Not tech savvy at all. super cute, grandpa-esque
His lectures were boring and disorganized, follow the reading schedules and go to class and you'll get an A. His random quizzes are a way to take attendance. If enough people don't show up he will randomly give a quiz that could just be to bubble in a,b,c for the first 3 questions. Go to class kids!
Do readings, this is somewhat a discussion based class, READING LOGS DO MATTER. Buckly's lectures are terrible, poor pacing and goes on rants. Will grill the class for specific word for word answers. Will go on field trips, but never returned within the time frame for the class. DON'T TAKE without a basic understanding on Canadian politics/history
He's a nice guy and clearly loves what he teaches but his biggest problem is clarity. The tests were disproportionate in difficulty to the rest of the class, his expectations were unclear and often changed and answers to questions were rarely given as you were expected to already know the answer. Study guides were too dense and vague to be helpful.
There was lots of extra credit, and all the tests were curved very generously. Also, Buckley was fairly good about using canvas and putting everything online, including lectures. However, literally all the classes were just him droning off a powerpoint, and he managed to make interesting material seem very boring. Coming to class felt pointless.
As someone interested in geography, I was really excited about this class. Although Dr. Buckley is passionate about what he teaches, his lectures were not organized and a bit boring. I actually found the assignments and readings interesting, but I wish the class lectures were better. The class is an easy A if you show up and do the assignments.
This is the worst teacher i've ever had in my whole life. He doesn't understand how to use a computer, he doesn't put grades in on canvas, and his instructions for assignments are all over the place. AVOID THIS "TEACHER" AT ALL COSTS.
He can seem to ramble but if you get through the first 10 mins of each class, he is really interesting and has a funny, dry sense of humor. I recommend going into office hours, it really helps and makes the class a whole lot more interesting.
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had. 3rd day of class I was 5 minutes late and he gassed me in front of the entire class saying how terrible of a student I am and I don't deserve to pass his class. Almost entirely based off of group projects, extremely unclear on expectations, constantly off subject, near impossible to get an A assignments
Buckley is somewhat of a WWU geography "Dark Horse" although everything is horribly unclear and he rambles off topic for hours, you can't truly have the proper experience here at Western without taking one of his courses
Doesnt know how to use technology. Lectures are a snooze-fest. Online quizzes twice a week, you dont get any kind of reminder so you have to be very on top of it. Gives extra credit but its a lot of work for a few points. His powerpoints are basically unreadable.
I did not enjoy my experience with Prof. Buckley. Even though class was online, the lectures were very boring and did not relate to what we were doing in the class at that moment. He talked down on students, particularly female ones, if they had an answer of which he did not remotely agree with.
In my time at WWU, I've had three classes with Professor Buckley: ENVS 204 and ENVS 333 in-person, and now ENVS 430 online. He is by far the most difficult professor I've ever dealt with, and I have viewed his classes as obstacles to my academic success. He has gotten my grades mixed up with other students, and his lectures are all a rambling mess.
Buckley is by far the worst professor I have ever had and potentially one of the worst professors at Huxley. The actual texts he uses in his classes are interesting though severely outdated. His lectures are nonsensical seemingly on purpose, he spends min 10mins complaining about zoom. He is terribly disorganized and reveals grades to entire class.
Patrick is a nice man and it is clear that he knows what he's talking about & wants to see his students succeed. That being said, he should not be a professor. He's very unorganized and gives very short notice for due dates. Ignore the syllabus, he doesn't seem to go by the schedule on it at all. The class isnt terribly difficult if you do the work
This class should be renamed to "The History of Globalization". Literally everything in the class revolves around the history of globalization and these videos from Jeffrey Sachs. Not a very hard class, but quite literally all of the learning was done through videos and readings. Buckley is not good at teaching and expects students to teach subject
Do not take a class from Buckley. Incredibly disorganized, forgets to tell students about assignments that are due.
Buckley is such a gem. ENVS 342 is the first class I've taken with him and he is such a sweet old man. I plan on taking as many classes with him as I can in the future. Even though my major isn't Geography or even a part of Huxley, I plan on taking all of my upper division credits with Pat because he is a great professor and gives clear rubrics
Buckley is a nice person *clearly intelligent but he should no longer be a teacher. Our class has found out about assignments from fellow students that Buckley has never mentioned in class & don't exist in the syllabus. Syllabus has not been updated in a long time & is not followed for the class. Very frustrating class as the subject is interesting
Would not reccomend
May as well taken a free online course through Sachs. Class is mandatory however you just sit there and watch videos. Lectures don't make sense, extremely disorganized, outdated, and he makes very insensitive comments. Posts grades for everyone to see. Definitely worst professor I've taken at WWU.
I've never had a more disorganized or unpleasant professor. He's impossible to listen to and doesn't know what's going on in his own course day by day. The quizzes are detail heavy, there is no structure to "lecture", & absolutely no discussion in the course. There's a confusing quarter-long group project. Office hours are held by phone. Don' t.
There are weekly quizzes in 333 where you get about 20 seconds to read and answer each question. To add on, he's extremely unorganized and makes very insensitive remarks to students. I've had Buckley for 3 other classes and his one bright side is that he raises everyone's grade, so if you do the work you won't fail (even though you dont learn much)
Just avoid him and thank me later. That's all I have to say
He has no idea how to use canvas, and because his classes are so large it's as if he also refuses to do anything to help individuals with issues. Most quizzes are multiple choice with less than 1 minute per question. AND HE DOESN'T GIVE YOU THE ANSWERS SO YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GET WRONG ON ANYTHING. EVER. Good luck learning, maybe he's better irl
Online lectures are boring, long, unorganized, and distracted. A nice person and very well versed in his field, not the best teacher. As long as you do the work, whether it be right or wrong, you'll pass though.
Professor Buckley does not know how to use Zoom or Canvas and spent an inappropriate amount of time complaining about their apparent shortcomings during class. This class required copious and diligent note taking and I spent 15 hours per week just taking notes. Disorganized, dense, and inaccessible. Take this class with a different professor.
I really don't understand why there's so many bad reviews for this guy. He's a bit of a rambler, but super accessible outside class (he even gave us his phone number) and he seems to care a lot about students succeeding. Flexible and gives tons of extra credit opportunities. Funny and sweet. Assignments are easy, just attend and read.
Dr Buckley has no idea how to use Canvas and my grade suffered because of it. I have straight As and this was the most ridiculously disorganized class Ive ever taken. Grades are posted for everyone in the class to see. We were quizzed on material we hadnt covered yet. I spent so much extra time just trying to track everything I needed down.
Patrick Buckley is a man of assumption. He presumes that everyone knows what he is talking about when he has explained something in such a convoluted manner that no one understands. He rambles to the point of students not knowing whats important to pay attention to and what does not matter. I cannot give him a low enough rating. Do not recommend.
Hes so funny, relatable, and an overall good person.
Please take my word and don't take this class. Very repetitive, dry and boring. Always wants exactly the answer that he would give. Repeatedly and rudely interrupts students when they are talking or presenting. Poor communication about assignments, difficult to reach. This was my capstone class and probably the worst class I have taken at Western.
Dr. Buckley is very intelligent, and has a humorous personality that can make lectures interesting. With that being said, his class is wildly disorganized on Canvas, and is test-heavy. His time-to question ratio was a bit out of proportion, making tests harder than they shouldve been. Nice guy, but not the best teacher; I wouldnt take him again.
Professor Buckley is old so you kind of have to bare with him on some things. He is a smart guy though and you can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. Overall easy class, did not take much effort.
Probably a better in person teacher, but his online synchronous class sucked. Boring lectures and even worse breakout rooms.
I am unsure why so many people hate Pat. I found him to be funny, approachable, and an easy A. Tests were material-heavy but answers were easily found in the slides. Sure, he's old and not incredibly tech savvy, but he is a great professor and the class was as good as a Zoom class can be. Bonus points bc he always showed us his cat.
Does not know how to use canvas. Does not know how to record lectures and wastes 10 minutes of class time everyday trying to figure it out. Does not answer questions correctly. Does not listen to student concerns. We don't know what questions we missed on tests. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. I could teach the class better.
1. Took far too much time going on personal tangents rather than covering the material. 2. Expected us to know the material and quizzed/tested us on it even though it wasn't covered in class. 3. Was not clear about schedule and then we needed to have assignments done
Outdated information. If you do your own research on the topics he discusses, most often it turns out that what he's teaching is at least a decade or two old and is now considered wrong or incorrect. Wastes a lot of time in class. If you're able to get away without taking his classes, please for the love of god do.
Honestly he's a little boring, bad at technology and slow. But he's so nice and lenient. He's one of the few professors that actually cares if you learn. If you take this class, try to meet him in person for office hours and it'll make the world of a difference. He also gives you multiple chances at extra credit.
Professor Buckley is a very nice guy, but he his class organization is very poor. He refuses to engage with canvas, saying its "cheap software" and instead offers an excel spreadsheet where you can manually calculate your grades. His lectures are at times engaging. Yet, he often sets up a point but never returns to it.
nice guy but not the best prof. class is very difficult in the terms of how he teaches it, it would be much better with a current "in the know" professor. you have no clue what is on the exams and 1/3 of the exam grades are short answer questions that can be the smallest things you did not know you had to remember. does not provide exam study guide
I found his lectures fascinating for the most part. Prof. Buckley is pretty understanding and gives you lots of chances for bonus points. He's good about the subject, knows a lot but I never felt like he was trying to B.S. me or the class. He is funny in his lectures and seems to have a good heart.
He's honestly pretty easy going. This class is very easy and he gives out a lot of handouts. Go to office hours if you have any questions, he definitely should be teaching >70 class.
He was great about answering questions during his office hours if you went go see him. Super helpful guy
He's a nice guy but not a great teacher in this age of technology. I took this class as a GUR and Buckley seems sweet, but he's a little scattered and can take a minute to start class because he struggles with computers. He also doesn't let you see your grades because he is not a fan of Canvas and grades on his own scale. He goes on tangents a lot.
His lectures were scattered, and he'd go on tangents for up to ten minutes at a time and never return to his original point. He's bad with technology and at least once a week class would start late because of it. Makes you calculate your own grade. An okay guy, and a somewhat easy class to pass, but I wouldn't recommend taking a class with him.
I signed up for a study abroad class with him to Hawaii for a week. While I had a good time overall, he definitely wasn't the best person to be teaching the class. He was a little slow and there was a strong age and cultural difference between him and the students which often resulted conflict. The trip was way more stressful than it needed to be.
Made us sign up for an online course through Sachs and expected us to teach ourselves about globalization. The lectures weren't very organized and a lot of times were very confusing. Did PowerPoint presentations at the end of the quarter and made insensitive comments during the presentations, making people feel upset, anxious, and overwhelmed.
This class was basically a teach yourself class since the lectures were disorganized and very hard to understand. There was an online quiz every week on canvas and an in person pop quiz every week that was based on the same content and had similar questions which made no sense. Assignments were difficult and confusing.
Professor Buckley seems like a nice man and he gives you a lot of opportunities to boost your grade. However, his frequent tangents, read-off-the-slide lectures, frequent difficulties with technology, and often out-dated/colonizer-y information made me wish I had taken a different professor.
Lectures are uninteresting and hard to follow. His canvas page is disorganized and it is easy to miss assignments. He is not very accommodating. Classes are small and discussion style which can be painful as there is a lot of awkward silence and slow pacing. Learned very little and would not recommend this professor for any class.
Professor Buckley really does care about his students and was invested in our success. He encouraged us to come to office hours and ask for help. However, this class was so hard and incredibly stressful, mostly due to his disorganization. The material seemed much easier than the exams, which were very difficult. Avoid classes with him if you can.
Prof. Buckley's classes are only difficult because of his old style of teaching and not knowing how to use the internet. He is super unclear in what he wants the students to do with the assignments we get, yet grades harshly. If you can - do not take classes with this guy.
Just absolutely awful.
Im sorry but he is just so boring. I had him early in the am and wanted to fall asleep the entire time. Also he is super hard to reach by email. Random attendance taking and pop quizzes. I wouldn't recommend his class at all. If you can take it with someone else do it!!!
How Much Stress and Chaos Can One Person With Tenure Cause? The Answer May Surprise You! No cohesive or easy-to-follow schedule; instructions and expectations are vague. Does not answer important emails. Is not adept at Canvas. Will embarrass students by making comments that should be said in private meetings. An absolutely bizarre experience.
Lots of colonizer mindset and language, and use of a lot of Asian accents. Doesn't do DAC accommodations and is pretty ableist in a lot of ways that add up quickly. Doesn't let you see quiz results, only grade, because the questions are "copyrighted" - same with the Scantron, it's very hard to see what you actually got wrong. Outdated info.
The worst professor I've EVER had at my 3 years at WWU. He spends the first 5-10 minutes of nearly every class struggling with technology. This transitioned into lectures that became irrelevant due to his nature to talk in tangents on unrelated subjects. Attendance was randomly taken and assignments are added the night before they are due.
Dude is insanely boring and made a subject I was interested in the most unenjoyable thing ever. Lectures are terrible. I will say he grades on a curve which makes it hard to do badly in the class, and gives lots of study guides. But the tests and quizzes are long and have so much information it feels impossible to do good and learn.
Professor Buckley's lectures can be disorganized, with frequent tangents. But the class is manageable if you stay on top of the work. unstuckstudy and the textbook are helpful for staying prepared.
Not good at all avoid if possible
I have taken a class by nearly every professor in ENVS at this point, so I feel like I can say this with confidence: Patrick Buckley is the worst ENVS professor at WWU. He is disparaging towards his female students and says things that would've gotten him a side-eye even in the 1950's. He does not care about teaching students, only about his tenure
Buckley does not have a grasp on technology that is necessary for teaching in today's age. The lectures are a mess and nearly impossible to go back and review for tests. Random and confusing attendance quizzes. Lectures are boring and at points vaguely racist. He is unapproachable and leaves you more confused than before you asked the question.
Dr. Buckley seems like a nice guy, but his DAILY struggle to use basic technology and his tendency to go on many, many tangents makes the class very boring and confusing at times. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities which is nice, but will often put in grades wrong and will forget to change them.
Really prone to tangents and long-winded examples that have little to do with the concepts they are meant to illustrate. Some sexism here and there. Lectures about "learning how to learn" but still relies on closed-note exams and rote memorization. The Canvas was poorly organized, and technology was a daily struggle in class.
“Patrick Buckley, some call him Sleepy Pat. He's Been teaching forever, folks, a long time. Knows his stuff, no question. But let's be honest, he's getting real old, folks, real old. Might be time to retire, maybe take it easy, hit the golf course. A lot of people are saying it. Tremendous career, but i think it's about done folks. Sad!
Relatively easy class if you show up, take notes, and pay attention. However, the lectures are pretty boring as he tends to go on long winded rants that are irrelevant, and then expects us to learn whatever he didn't get to cover by reading the textbook. Easy, but boring, and I often find him unhelpful when asking questions as well.
He seems very kind and sweet but is a yapper, try and get friends who have the class for attendance and homework is super easy. I didn't really go to the class but when I did just took it as a study hall and did hw and just read the textbook.
STOP! Do NOT take this class with this professor (ENVS204)! Go change that CRN right now! This was probably up there with one of the worst classes I have taken at WWU, and I was constantly baffled in class that this was the education I was paying for. Ramblings and Reagan-era politics make this class more of theatrical performance than a class.
So this class was awful and fel
Envs 204 was very very boring, I barely learned anything in class during the lectures and mostly read the textbook. The exams were easy and the curve was good. Lots of extra credit too. Bad professor but at least he made the class easy.
Lectures are incredibly boring, he has a tendency towards going on tangents that often feature some sort of out-of-touch comment relating to race, gender, or disability. Struggled with technology daily. Not a tough grader at all, it's pretty easy to do well in his class, but lectures are just SO painful to sit through. Would not recommend.
If you're looking to learn nothing about Human Geo and only learn the true stress in college, take this course w/ Buckley! I was an A- average student graduating high school last spring, took this class in my second quarter at WWU, and had to get a partial dean's withdrawal from this course. Now I'm on academic warning. Thanks Dr. Buckley!
Spent half an hour not answering my question, and would publicly shame people for asking questions. Gave me the wrong equation for an algebra question, and when I couldn't answer it, told me in front of the whole class to drop his class because he didn't think I could do “basic algebra” I got an A in algebra
