whatever your major, you'll think about changing it to his department!!
He's a great guy
Scared me quite a bit...not very approachable
Challenging, but very entertaining!
He's so hot he's on fire!!!!
sexy, sexy, sexy!!!!with a capital S!!!!!
Great guy...tests are okay...excellent speaker...keeps you focused and wanting to come back to class!
One of the best classes I have ever taken!! He definitly keeps you awake and it was always interesting to see what was going to happen next.
Very Interested!
He's a really nice guy and is a dynamic speaker. Loved the class. He still says hi to me on campus and asks about my major and my classes. Very approachable.
He is an awesome teacher, if you pay attention you will learn A Lot from him. Including NOT to Live in the Flood Plain! :-D He is an awesome teacher all around. Expect to do work, but it is all worth it. Don't ever fall asleep either!
Stud Muffin with a Brain!
As a non-traditional student I find Professor Burkhart's lectures geared more towards the younger generation. With this said, I think I would get more out of his lectures if he would not treat all the class as if we were all teenagers.
This guy teaches towards EVERYONE. He gets students involved by grabbing their attention! Very smart man and wants you to learn something even if you don't want to. This class will leave you to be a better person not only for urself but for the enviro.
feel sometimes he goes over the top and is too much, intelligent man, but very opionated, when he writes thing on the board it is clear and detailed but difficult to decipher what words he spews otherwise will be on tests.
Dr. Burkhart is a great teacher. he is interesting and fun. He is also blindingly attractive. I had a hard time focusing on class because he is just so hot!
do not build your house ON A FLOOD PLAIN!!! Best class I have ever taken. If i could take it again I would. Burkhart is the MAN!!
He will sing "Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry..." He keeps things interesting. Excellent Prof.
I took the class my 1st sem. fresh. yr. and had a D right before finals so i dropped it. I just retook it and found that attending class is helpful and just study. he curves a lot, so its easy to get at least a B
Great Class, Great Professor.
His tests are hard as they can be. Keep all of your notes from the previous courses because all of his tests and the finals are cumulative. I know that i'm going to fail. The bad thing is that he is the only prof who teaches env. geo.
He is the best teacher in the world!!!!!!!I think his classes are GREAT!
we get to watch dr. suess. he's a good time. kinda hard- get someone else's test who had him before and use them as study guides. class is generally fun. hes not afraid to say what he thinks and be politically incorrect. i admire his character.
this man will make you**** your pants. he's hilarious, serious, and truly cares about the students. he dosen't have an attendance policy, but i never missed a class b/c you never know what might happen in his class! take this guy!!!
DR. BURKHART IS A VERY PASSIONATE PROFESSOR AND I WOULD LOVE OT HAVE HIM FOR EVERY SCIENCE CLASS.
i love it.. i want to change majors b/c of him.. he's a phenomonal teacher.. definitely recommend him and GO TO CLASS..it's your grade..
This guy is horrible! He is rude and arrogent. He is mean. He treats college students like they are retarded! If you are shy, and dont like to ask questions because you are unclear then dont take him! Horrible...He made me cry!
I had a horrible experience with physical geology but i needed another science so I took env. geology and Burkhart made me realize that geology didnt have to be terrible. He keeps your attention and wants you to learn. I enjoyed his class a lot and did very well. Take him
One of the best teachers I ever had. If you study you will do well. He is very fun and interesting and he cares about his students
burkhart is effing amazing. i almost didn't give two sh*ts about environmental geology before taking the class, but his passion for the subject intrigued me beyond belief. take this class.
He tends to intimidate students and they are afraid to ask for help. He makes you read 100 page stories and puts "juicy" questions on his test to see who knows their stuff. Take good notes on movies and go to review sessions and supplemental instruction if you don't want to ask him personally.
Kind of intimidating, but seems like a nice guy. Make sure you go to class and take detailed notes on the movies. You have to read 100 page stories that are horribly boring and then have a 10 point quiz on them. The bad part is, the questions he asks on the quiz are incredibly detailed.
Very scary the first few weeks. I almost dropped out. But once you get past that point he is a pretty nice guy. Very willing to help you understand the material. Much different in his office than he is in the classroom
Dude is nuts. He's a heck of a good professor though. Really wants students to learn something about life rather than just learn the material in the books. Really cool guy with good stories.
The stuff that was taught in this class shouldn't just be for general knowledge, but should be looked at as a life lesson for anybody who is passionate about the world they live in. Dr. B is a wonderful prof whom I would recommend to anyone needing a science to fill a block.
Teacher was extremely passionate about what he was teaching.. could be very intense at times.
Easy if you go to every class, take notes on videos, and read assignment. He will ask questions like, "What song did I sing in class?" to catch those who weren't in class. All questions on stories are written by past students not him. Easy A if you GO TO CLASS!!!!!!!!!! PS. Don't sleep or talk to others during class or he blows up.
Dr. Burkhart looks like a wizard.
Class was interesting. She was a bit crazy, but loved what he taught. Wasn't a hard class, as long as you went and took notes. Tests were pretty easy; they came from his lectures. Really enjoyed his class because he made it fun. You will laugh alot so be prepared!! JUST DON'T SLEEP!!! He will come and slam on your desk.
"DON'T LIVE ON THE FLOOD PLAN!" "THE POPULATION IS GROWING EXPONENTIALLY!!!" i remember screaming burkhart quote while studying for tests. the crazy hippy is the reason i went into environmental studies
His huge personality made an otherwise boring subject and enjoyable class. If you don't pay attention he will "fillet you!!!!" but with moderate work and attention you're getting at least a B if not an A.

Your in for a ride
Environmental Geology is my favorite class that I've taken at SRU.
very sweet man, always willing to help you if you need it. he is crazy, funny and really nice. make sure you take notes and go to every class. Make sure you dont sleep...he eats people who sleep in his class. Also dude looks like a hippy, wizard, cowboy all in one...i have no clue!
I severely disliked prof. Burkhart. The old hippy won't stop yelling, its very disrespectful to the students; he has no business raising his voice like that unless hes trying to pick a fight. The blatant arogance of making you buy a special book that his name is on (that the bookstore won't buy back) for a 100 level class is disgusting. Burkhart takes WAY to long to get to his points, and on the way there screams at you and tries to confuse you with stupid metaphors and analogies. Do not take his classes.
He's very scary at first... but the tests were pretty easy, as long as you came to class. He tries to throw random stuff into the discussion and then quiz you on it to make sure you came that day. He may seem unapproachable in class, but he's actually a nice guy
Never read the book, but still did fine. I did heavily skim the novel though. Go to class and you'll be fine.
You will do well on the tests by studying your notes. If you miss a class get the notes from someone, notes are the best way to study for his tests.Very interesting class, extremely interesting teacher.Easy 10 pt worksheets and easy 10 pt quizes. Take notes when you watch videos. He curves your grade.Easy B, not too hard to get an A,just study notes

Dr. B is an excellent teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone. I do recommend that if you take his class in a lecture hall, to sit close to the front because he sometimes whispers and you can't hear him at all if you sit back. Also, DON'T SLEEP IN THAT CLASS! He will have someone around you nudge you to wake you up then scream at you!
He's a little crazy and intimidating but he wasn't bad. There's not a whole lot of work in the class. It wasn't bad.
best teacher i've ever had
best teacher i've ever had
He is a great professor. He makes the class very interesting and makes the students learn the information.
Really funny but you got to really think in his class
Horrible teacher. i didn't pay to take his class so i could sit through 50mins of him telling me my brother who is in the army is a dumbass for going to iraq..what gives him the right...almost half our class walked out after that comment...he should just stick to geology and stay away from the political **** that comes spewing from his mouth.
Tests are very hard. Test material comes from lectures and movies. Reading the book wont help much. His class is very interesting but tells to many storys instead of teaching. He screams alot for no reason, gets old really quick.
This class gave me the most trouble my freshman year. All he does is yell and make students embarrassed. He thinks he's cool because he swears. I don't know why. The tests are so hard with irrelevant questions about what songs he sings in class. WHO CARES?! I don't recommend taking him if you plan on getting a decedent grade.
Probably the best prof I have ever had. those who act like students (i know, a new concept for some) usually do fine, and he is an awesome dude if you just go talk to him.
Does not use text offen and needs to me more clear with instructions and last needs to cover and text only on what is covered in the classroom and on outside of the classroom activities.
Dr. Burkhart was very helpful with anything that anyone needed. I missed some quizzes and he let me make them up. As an advisior, he didn't help with scheduling classes but helped with some personal problems. The class itself was interesting and made me think, but it kind of scared me when he yelled. All in all a good class.
DR. B IS AN AWESOME GUY. VERY KNOWLEDGABLE. TALKS ABOUT A WIDE RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL TOPICS. ALL HE EXPECTS IS YOUR ATTENTION, RESPECT, AND EFFORT TOWARDS YOUR GRADE. HIS CLASS IS HELPFUL AND INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING!!!!!!
Scary at first, but once the ppl who can't handle him drop (ie: ppl who text/talk during class, etc), he lightens up a lot. He challenges you to do your best. PS, you are basically guaranteed an A if you go to supplemental instruction.
Dr. Burkhart is the man. The fact that he won't baby students is an admirable trait, one that more professors need to acquire. I firmly believe that when he says his class will help you save money and your life in the future, not to mention the future of our planet, it is true. So take him for any class he teaches and learn something.
very arrogant man! He thinks his way is the only way! Tests are ridiculous & the way he swears & talks to the class is a joke. I think for a professor he needs to talk like one not like a truck driver
Challenging course. I heard the other Geology teacher is a breeze, Burkhart is scary. If you are intelligent and care about the Earth you can do well. You have to read a 300 pg book, but it is broken up thru-out the semester. Tests are cumulative and you must study big time. He is nuts, screams and yells every day, a freak, but likable at times.
come to class take notes and study. I though i was falling but he curves and what i had and he two different things.
Insanely intelligent, passionate about the Earth, wickedly cool, and an all around awesome professor. He can be intimidating at first, but as long as you're not part of the lazy ass goof off group, you'll do very well in his class and enjoy what he has to say.
This guy has passion. He makes education exciting, he loves people and the earth. He EXPECTS you to follow direction. Show up, do the work and get an A. The workload for this course is manageable and he gives you every opportunity to succeed. I wish there were more Profs like him. He cares! Shiny Happy People learning to care for our earth!
Helpful if you need it. yells a lot almost had a B tests are very hard quizes easy their are only three test pay attention and take notes read the stories you'll be fine.
This is a very good teacher and does not take nonsense from NOBODY! he really loves the environment and he will try to make you love it too(happy shiny ppl holding hands!!lol)!! The class is really challenging but its nice! and DO NOT MISS CLASS BECAUSE YOU WILL PAY FOR IT IN THE QUIZ AND EXAMS!!
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, GO TO CLASS AND THE SI SESSIONS AND YOU WILL HAVE AN A!!!no jokes!
Very knowledgeable man so he has the right to be arrogant. Class is not that hard if you read and go to class. There are many quizzes and the exams are detailed so you must study and read everything he gives you. On a personal level, Dr. B is very condescending and yells a lot. It's not really effective. He thinks his students are idiots (most).
Horrible teacher! Do not take him. I went to every class and studied my butt off and still got a B plus i did the extra credit. By the way he dosent take attendance and says it makes a difference that a crock of **** He yells randomly in class and just flips out on ppl at random
This class is ridiculously hard. I attended every single class and studied like crazy and the tests were still really hard. He randomly screams in the middle of lecture and is so intimidating that you don't even want to ask for help. Only take this class if you want to work hard for a crappy grade and get screamed at for no reason.
Not bad in general. Yells a lot and get fired up over things. You'll learn a lot about the environment. One of the few teachers that test my knowledge at SRU. Tends to talk about politics a lot instead of doing lecture. Book can't be sold back anywhere.
Dr. Burkhart is both pretentious and abrasive. i do not advise that you take his class unless you enjoy hearing about how "students these days are just lazy" all while you're trying to balance six courses, cipher his not so informative "lectures", AND manage you extra curricular activities. his allocution could move mountains, but the information
Down Right Abusive just stay away, will save you alot of DRAMA
he is ridiculous he expects u 2 remember the dumbest stuff u learn a lot but he is intimidating i am not bad in science at all and I had to drop this class!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He is the worst professor I've ever had. He teaches the class like a 400 level when its only 100. He expects you to know Geology when he doesn't even teach it. He barely test you on the notes that he accutally does give you, he tests you on his personal interests and stories. He yells all the time and is completely riduclous. I do not recommend him
I really enjoyed his class! I learned alot from him. You have to attend class, take notes and study HARD, but if you do all those things you are more than likely to get a good grade in the class. He does yell alot but he wants to get his point across. If you really pay attention you will do fine. It is not a sluff off class. Make an effort!
Honestly, i hated this man so much during every single class, but now that the class is almost over i really do respect him. he loves his job and does a really good job of making an impact on his students. he is scary at times but study, go to class, and follow directions and your at least given a B in this class.
Worst professor I've ever had. I studied, read my books, took notes, and didn't miss a class and I still got a D. Ive never had a D in my life. He gives his opinions too much and teaches us different stuff than whats on his tests and quizzes. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Ok everyone, here's the lowdown on this class. ITS HARD but if you care about the environment you will LOVE Burkhart. He's VERY opinionated and gives quizes out of the blue, so this is no easy class. I've attended all but one and am getting a d. i'll prolly drop it and take it again but i LOVE him and i think once you get used to him you will too.
he is a great guy to listen to and always keeps our attention. plus he will always help you if you need it
Burkhart is a tough teacher and attendance isnt mandatory but if you want to pass, id make sure you were there. quizzez and tests are all on notes so study those really well and youll do fine. He does yell alot but hes very passionate about his work. He seems mean but hes not. Pay attention and take notes on every video and story he tells you!
While his class was a hard one, i did actually enjoy it. I had him my first semester at SRU and his mix between scaring the**** out of me (I sat in the second row) and his humor really gave me something to look forward to. He's a great guy in and out of class.
Burkhart is the man! He really cares about the environment, and gets his class to care too. Don't be scared of him, he is very funny most of the time! I think everyone should take his class if they want to learn about the earth.
Dr. Burkhart is pationate about what he knows. Some may think he yells just to yell but it is only because he is trying to make his students more aware of how we affect our world. Excellent professor!
If you don't have the maple syrup, you'll fail. Also, don't sit too far back during the first class or you will be sprayed with the nectar of Hoss. Confused? You'll learn in good time, don't worry.
Very hypocritical teacher. He stresses the importance of sustainability but requires you to buy a book with a very small section that he drew up which could be posted online hence saving students money and paper. Class is very unorganized and attempting to study for his tests and quizzes can be very confusing. I would not suggest taking him.
Do yourself a favor.... Take some one else. While he is very passionate about his own beliefs, the actual act of teaching course material other than his own small section of the book he requires is minimal. There are many things that I would like to learn about Env Geo that are book related that he just doesn't go into. He is self serving....
Good teacher, very opinionated. Hard class. Write down exactly what he says and read the "maple syrup". Not a lot of notes, but you need to know everything he says. Scary professor at first, but a cool guy.Go talk to him during office hours. Go to tutoring. It helps a lot. Honestly, I loved this class. It helped me decide on a major.
He is very passionate about what he does! Take notes and listen carefully! Do exactly what he says and you will succeed! Otherwise, you will fail very quickly!
I love Dr. B!! No interest in EGEO before this class, but Dr. B is entertaining! He's a crazy man who is very opinionated, but he will not **** you! Need the maple syrup to pass the class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but go to class. Tests mostly on notes; study those and you'll be good. Read what he tells you to. Entertaining stories! Funny gu
This cat is great! Loves his work and very easy on the eyes. His class is hard. But you learn so much and have fun taking on the challanges. He should California where I'd bet he'd shine at UCB!
Easy A if you go to class, take notes, and read over them before the test. All there is to it. But this guy sucks. Spends half of lecture time telling you how dumb you are (meanwhile he doesn't know the difference between lose and loose).
Dude isn't as much of a hard ass as ppl mkake him out to be. just pay attention and he tells you evrything u need to know. READ CONTROL OF NATURE! tests are mostly from this book and lectures. also go 2 supplemental instruction (that teachers cool anyway). Read, study, get an A
You can really learn a lot from this guy. He comes off like a jerk sometimes but you can tell its in good faith. The most interesting lectures I've had even though it was a freshman level class I was taking as a junior. If your interested in the subject he's always happy to talk about it. Take it if you have the chance.
I took Environmental Geology with him at the helm this semester. This class was probably the greatest class I've ever had. He's a great teacher who actually gives a**** about what he's teaching. This class is an easy recommendation if you're willing to go to class and take notes.
At first I found this class very difficult for being a 100 level class, but then I just started studying my notes before class started each period because he gives pop quizzes so be ready! He is a great prof and you will learn a lot, not only about environmental geo, but he will teach you many life lessons and tell you stories that are memorable.
The man knows what he's talking about and cares a lot about it. He's intimidating - reminds me of Clint Eastwood. He doesn't take attendance but he gives pop quizzes once a week so it's important to go. Every video you watch is fair game on exams. CONTROL OF NATURE IS IMPORTANT!! Read it. He's not an easy A but you learn a lot.
Very knowledgable man. Should be out in the wild, chasing storms and observing volcanoes. Hard to study for his class. He will pull assignments out of thin air and does not have a proper syllabis. Very hard to be prepared for his class.
Don't take the man so seriously, he act the way he does for a reason. Realize that everything he does has meaning, it like a play. He's a good professor, while I don't share all his political views, he does make you make you think critically. I think that should be the objective of all professors. Take his course, just don't take him so seriously.
It took me awhile to get used to the way he teaches. I started doing better toward the end of the semester. take notes, review your notes for pop quizes and take the class seriously. He puts on an act and STUDY.
I thinkhe is a great professor. Take notes, be prepared for quizzes and showup for class. Also take advantage of the tutoring that is made available. He really cares about the planet and it shows with his enthuisam
This professor will seem obnoxious at first and still will be later on but he will grow on you. Make sure you listen to him in class. Attendance is mandatory and take notes. Make sure you buy a new textbook because used ones might have required worksheets torn out. And one last thing........Staple your papers before turning them in!!!!!
He is awesome!! I have no interest in science what so ever and i absolutely loved this class. If someone did not do good they are lazy. He tells stories which actually teach you the information. I would recommend him 100 percent!
He Rocks! He's one of the best teachers I have ever had. he knows his stuff and is great both in/out of classroom. He cares not only about his teaching material but also about the students. I would suggest him to the end of the earth! HE ROCKS!
Make sure you pay attention the first week and study the notes. I started off bad because i didn't look at the notes. He has quizzes fairly often the first half of the semester but then they are less frequent. There is a group tutor for this class that he tells everyone about, GO TO HIM!! He tells you everything you'll need to know. Recomend Dr. B
He is a very passionate man, he really cares about what he teaches AND he cares about his students. Meet with him if you are confused, read the book, use the maple syrup and take notes! He is not as intimidating as you think! He will do everything he can to help you succeed. This is not an easy class, you aren't in elementary school anymore.:)
Burkhart is incredibly passionate about his subject and about education in general. His class and lab are not difficult, but you must show up, take notes and pay attention to get a high grade. He's intimidating at first, but he seemed like a great guy once you get settled in class.
Dr. Burkhart is a great professor and knows what he's talking about but you MUST attend class to achieve a high grade. Pop Quizzes once a week and you need to buy the book for the worksheets. Preferably a new book so they pages aren't ripped out. He's a great professor you just have to attend class to get a good grade. Attendance isn't mandatory
Dr. Burkhart is one of the best professors I have had the chance of taking at Slippery Rock. He is so passionate about his work and he teaches you how geology applies to everyday life. The textbook is very helpful so I would highly suggest purchasing it. Go to class.. it will pay off!!
Dr. Burkhart is one of the best professors I've had at SRU. He has such a passion for the world and for teaching. He is both entertaining, yet he expects you to be prepared and ready to learn. Read the book, attend class, take good notes, and study hard for his exams.
As a senior, I've had some bad professors over the years, and Dr. B is one of them. He's passionate, but other than that, its a horrible class. He constantly complains how there isn't enough time to teach, yet goes over the syllabus every class and wastes your time with lame stories. The class is a extremely boring. Avoid Dr. B at all costs.
If you fail Dr. B's class, you are likely to fail at life in general. Dr. B holds his students accountable and treats you as the adult you should be. Focus on the message not the method, LISTEN to what the man is saying. By far the most amazing professor on campus. He also offers a tutorial taught by a former student. GO! It's worth it!
He has tons of outdoorsy stories to tell, but does not teach. If you have the time & effort to work extremely hard for your grade, this class is for you.....
Dr. Burkhart's teaching style is extremely unique. He's funny but can get angry and go off on rants, however he does tie it together to make a point. He treats you like an adult but at the same time isn't clear on when assignments are due or quizzes are taken. My only problem is he spouts a lot of political talk but isn't as informed as he pretends
The absolute worst professor to ever teach at Slippery Rock. Hes an insult to Slippery Rock. I didnt learn anything in his class. The most offensive thing hes ever done would be talking like he was mentally retarded and not thinking about students who may have mentally disabled family members. He enjoys degrading his students. Very narcissistic
He is THE WORST professor i have ever had. He goes off on stories about nonsense and expects you to learn a lesson from it. He is not clear about anything and no friendly either. He makes in intro class impossible. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
DON'T DO IT. The absolute worst teacher I've ever seen. He's spent more time this semester talking about Elmo (literally) than he has teaching material. He makes the tests based entirely off of the book because he doesn't teach anything in the lecture. If you're willing to spend hours every day studying for an irrelevant class then this is for you.
An excellent, knowledgeable professor. Expects college students to act like adults. Doesn't like when students don't study, are disrespectful, or don't follow instructions, which is understandable. Questions on tests can be very difficult. He goes the extra mile to make you work for a good grade. Very passionate about Science; I learned a lot.
He is a very unique professor. He mainly rants during class the entire time, often screaming and getting very mad out of no where. His tests and assignments don't make much sense, and are graded by pure memorization of the exact definition rather than a broad or comprehensive understanding. He is very very very passionate about our planet.
Dr. B is an amazing professor who really cares about his students. He may come off intimidating at first, just get to know him and he will help you out where needed. Make sure to attend every class and participate. Write down anything he says, and when I say anything, I mean anything and everything because it may show up on the exam/pop quiz!
Love him, Tough grader. Work hard and you will receive the grade you deserve. Amazing class to learn all about life and the amazing planet.
Majority of the time Burkhart just rants and yells about the same things. There's more ranting than actually material being taught. He focuses a lot on minute details from stories or movies instead of general understanding. He cares more about following directions. If you miss a class, you could have a quiz the next class on the stuff you missed.
Dr. Burkhart really opened my eyes up about the world and the environment. He treats his students like they are adults (which he should). Honestly, if you just show up, take notes, and read the assigned texts, you will be fine. You are in college, expect professors to be different from high school. I would recommend Dr. Burkhart. Very passionate.
The class is really easy, most of the test questions come from the lectures so you have to go every day and pay attention but you don't have to read the textbook. But, you don't really learn anything and Burkhart just rants. He yells for most of the class and insults students. It's an easy A, but having to deal with him may not be worth it.
Definitely a unique experience. Lectured a lot, but was always pretty easy to listen to. Tests weren't easy, and there were pop quizzes almost every week, but I learned a lot.
Very tough grader, but very passionate. You will learn a lot. He is very intense at first but give him time and go to his office and make a personal connection with him, you'll see he is a really nice guy.
Dr. B is kind of a nut case. You won't learn anything in this class, you have to pay attention to very specific details in his lectures and assigned readings. He spend most of his time screaming and making you feel really bad about yourself, even if you're passing the class. I dread going to his class.
You prompted a question of how you can get students to further care and follow directions. Now, whether the question was rhetorical or not was not conveyed effectively. But again, that's why I am writing this. As a future educator, I believe that teaching has its own styles in all aspects. However, there are determining factors as to how effective
I never knew what would be on the next quiz, when the next worksheet would be due. He's very passionate about the environment and geology, but he strayed from the topic at hand very often, leaving me confused all the time. If you're a slow learner that sometimes struggles in the sciences, Burkhart might not be the best professor for you.
I strongly advise against taking Burkhart's class. You won't learn anything in this class, you have to pay attention to VERY SPECIFIC details in his lectures and assigned readings. He spend most of his time yelling, insulting students, and just making you feel bad about yourself, even if you are passing the class. I dread going to his class.
Really loves his job and cares about the earth extremely
Lots of people hate Burkhart, and although he's intense, you'll learn a lot and the class isn't hard to pass if you just go to class, take notes, and do what he tells you to do. Don't take this class if you are expecting him to go easy on you, or if you aren't willing to put in the work. You don't use the textbook except for the Maple Syrup.
Since Dr. Burkhart reads these posts I'd like me share my displeasure in this class. You make us buy a textbook for $150 dollars, which we don't use, but 10 pages in the front. Then you lecture us on how bad WE are on the environment. I only wonder how many trees this environmental teacher has killed that is a true waste of paper
Cool dude. Personally unless your as amped about geology as he is your probably not gonna have a fun time. He's a good teacher but he does go off on tangents now and again. Honestly the course is harder than a regular 100 level should be in my opinion but if you follow directions and do what he suggests you will pass it's just not an easy A.
Extremely passionate, cares about students, strict but honest.
If you like someone yelling every class that you're ruining the environment and not learning anything, then take this class. For a 100 level class, it is unreasonably detail oriented. I took this class to fill a liberal studies requirement and I regret not dropping it at the beginning of the semester. Do yourself a favor and take a different class.
Dr. Burkhart has a polarizing personality, that is a self-descriptive term. He is not for everyone but his lectures and attitude were amazing. He is probably my favorite professor I have ever taken in my entire time at SRU. I am not even a Science major and I am going to continue to take his classes. Highly Recommend
Dr B comes off very tough, but hes one of the best professors Ive ever had here at Slip. If you actually go to his office hours and talk with him, hes a genuinely good guy. I did my work and he helped where it was needed but he didnt hand it to me. Work for it, but worth it.
Dr Bs class was the highlight of my semester. Hes tough but hard work pays off. He loves this planet and wants you to as well. Lots of pop quizzes, so show up. Tests are hard. Amazing lectures. Took me on a trip w/ a different class to show me what geologists do. Super caring and considerate. Once in a lifetime experience. Ill miss his class.
Very passionate about the planet. He tries to drive home concepts and ideas. If you come to class and pay attention you will do well. Read assignments and do the homework. There is a quiz or homework due once a week, usually Thursday. Exams were a lot harder than they needed to be and you have to study some. The curve is VERY heavy. Easy B if not A
This professor is a do not take!! He screams and yells during his lectures and makes comments about things thats dont relate to what he is talking about. I promise you, you dont wanna take this class unless you wanna be yelled like a parent. Doesnt use D2L, doesnt use email, makes you find stuff on the IDrive only.. do not take
Youre going to hear horror stories about this guy, but believe me when I tell you: you have NOTHING to worry about. Its a 100 level class, his grading scale gives Bs into the 70% range. Dont skip class, take decent notes, listen to his lectures. I wasnt a diligent student, still got out with a high B. Hes a really cool guy if youre respectful
Dr. Burkhart is smart, really smart, and you're gonna have to accept this. He also cares alot and speaks the truth. However, if you're taking any other hard classes then I wouldn't suggest taking it. This is not a 100 level class, you are going to have to listen to VERY specific details on lectures that dont follow any flow, and be ready to test
Dr. B is an in your face professor. If you prefer a laid back atmosphere he is not for you! He's very passionate about the material he teaches, and expects 100% from the students. His test are in depth, and if you miss a lecture you will get behind. Would recommend making use of office hours! Nice professor, just not the right atmosphere for me!
Burkhart's class was a struggle. He gives you a seventy page case study to read to simply ask on the quiz what science organizations were used through out the case. To me it seems like a lot of busy work. The class is not worth it. Nothing but MIND GAMES. I personally was not a fan of the class and would HIGHLY HIGHLY advise against it.
Burkhart is either lobed or hated. He speaks loudly and is very dramatic and bold, this is what makes him fun. He tells the truth, wont sugar coat. Hes blunt and will teach you SO much. I look up to him. Hes opened my eyes to many truths of the world. Just make sure you put your phone away in class and STUDY WHAT HE TELLS YOU TO STUDY
Dr. Burkhart gets judged on his teaching style rather than him as a person, which is why he gets bad ratings. If you talk to him one-on-one or go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful and willing to do anything he can to help you succeed. He continuously says in his lectures that he is our buddy and wants us to succeed. That is not a lie.
Dr. Burkhart's EGEO100 course is too difficult to do well in. No powerpoints, no d2l, no organization, hard exams. In class, he rants more about climate change than teaching material. Often, his emotional rants would make me feel uncomfortable. 10/10 Recommend taking biology or physics rather than EGEO100.
Burkhart is a very misunderstood professor to many students here. You either hate him or love him. Burkhart is extremely passionate about the world, and his lectures show it. (though sometimes they can ramble) Big negative about the course is the lack of D2L AT ALL and expensive but necessary textbook. He truly cares about your success, in the end.
If you value your money or time, dont take Dr. B. Hes a good guy and a poor teacher. We spend thousands to go to college and his distinct teaching method is an abhorrent example of higher education. He will not test on beneficial or useful information but on soporific and tedious assignments/readings. Passionate lectures, still a collegiate waste
He has a hard time staying on one topic during lectures making his lectures hard to follow. He will call you out if you are doing anything disrespectful (talking during the lecture, packing up early, being on cellphone etc). However, my life has total changed after taking his class and I strongly recommend taking it.
One of the best teachers at the slipper rock. Learnt the most in his classes. Yes they were hard but you actually learn stuff. Definitely worth my time and money would take his classes 100x over
I added this class later in the semester and he still made me take the quizzes I was not here to learn the material on, prior to signing up for the course. He's very degrading to students. Hard assessments but passionate about geology. Goes on tangents. Nice during office hours but scary in person. This class still haunts my dreams 2.5 years later.
Refuses to use D2L, off-topic rants in class, unclear instructions on homework and quizzes. Is an angry old man, should not be teaching.
DR. Burkhart once stayed an hour after the class ended because I got out of my internship late. He taught me all of the material from class and I couldnt have been more grateful. He even made sure I understood it before he left and our class was his last class of the day. The material wasnt always easy but he really works with you. Great prof!!!
Hardest class Ive ever taken, doesnt upload slides and hard to follow
You can tell that Dr. B is a good person and has good intentions, however he doesn't require you to go to class. Which isn't fair for the students who do go, because you can get the same grade as someone who skips.
Dr. B is a pretty cool guy, but I'm not sure that he's a great professor. He's knowledgeable and passionate about the environment, but he's unorganized. He barely knows how to use D2L. I'm writing this on the last day of finals week and there STILL isn't a syllabus for the class in D2L. We weren't given a paper one either. It's very frustrating.
Dr. Burkhart is not for the faint hearted. He is not afraid to call you out in front of a hundred people. He is also an extremely passionate professor. He comes off as a savage because he cares about our planet. His classes aren't easy, but you will learn a lot from him. If you are going for an easy class, don't take him. He is a great guy.
He yells at students for missing questions
What can I say, a veteran of being a professor at SRU where he has a traditional way of teaching. It's either you like or dislike him, and I'm torn between the two. On one hand, very passionate and successful in his career which would be good for Geology majors, but as a basic RS class, he tries to persuade you into changing to a Geology major.
Took this class as a rock studies requirement that's not even in my major; Was unbelievably difficult for a 102 course. He didn't post a single thing to D2L and would yell and swear at students. Exams were nothing like the study guides. Avoid this professor at all costs!!
Tests are impossible and he yells at you. Take this class online I beg you.
Dr. Burkhart was one to remember, and not for many good reasons. He would barely explain what he was teaching us and then blame us for not learning. We had many pointless emotion lead lectures instead of covering the course topics. Along with that, his tests were hard and he also assigned a huge suprise essay for the class before his final.
Class is very difficult, average exam grade was failing. Although attendance isn't taken, you will fail if you skip. He is very passionate and isn't afraid to yell to get you to listen to his rants. Textbook was purchased through inclusive access but never used. Getting an A requires an excessive amount of work for a 100-level rock studies course.
Dr. B is something else. You will certainly not be bored in his class, though that's not always a good thing. He often devolves into completely irrelevant tangents and life stories while taking ages to return to the topic at hand. If you show up and take notes, it's an easy A, though.
He goes on long lectures about things that have nothing to do with the actual module, his tests are never on what he says to look at, he doesn't take criticism very well, and he doesn't even teach. I love the passion but he's not helpful. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
He's very passionate but he will waste your time. For an entry-level class, he expects you to know everything as if it was your major. He has the habit of providing study guides that don't matter because he'll ask about something so minuscule that wasn't on the study guide. He expects too much and will blame you for everything. Take this online.
He reminds me of my uncle if my uncle went on a life-changing nature hike in his early 20's. Like he'd give you your first beer at 12 but if HIS kids did that, they'd be grounded for a month. He actively TRIES to trip you up. If you get a good grade, he accuses the class of cheating.
He is a cool guy but not a good teacher. He would much rather be in the exploring the world and he doesn't really care if you do well or not. He just enjoys making his classes very difficult, struggles with common sense.
The worst. He goes on long rants during lectures that have nothing to do with the modules and often yelled at the class. D2L was a mess and the tests are never what he tells you to study. He is passionate about science but he is not a good teacher.
Do not take his classes unless you want to suffer.
Dr. B is very knowledgeable but he often devolves into long, shouty rants and tangents, to the point where it is often unintentionally hilarious. There will never be a dull moment in his class, for better or for worse. The class is very easy as long as you just show up and do the bare minimum of studying, though.
Dr. B's classes are an experience - lectures often veer off topic, but if you keep up with the material, it's an easy A. unstuck ai was a big help for study prep.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Nice guy and so smart & passionate. Has zero clue how to relay information to students. We have nothing to go by or study. We don't use one of the textbooks. Lectures are barely about the information we need. I struggled so much this semester.
Dr. B is off his rocker 24/7. Easy class in terms of actual work though, as long as you actually show up.
This guy is a bit crazy. One second he'll be whispering then the next he's screaming about something irrelevant. Often talks about his life stories instead of teaching. Textbook doesn't relate to reading quizzes AT ALL. Seems like a sweet guy one on one but doesn't really teach content.
Genuinely don't know how this man is employed here. He veers off topic literally every class period often using much of it to rant about. Religion, politics, public schools, his family, students futures. Very hard to follow and take notes on. Often shouting at students which I don't care about but some may find to be too much
He is an awful professor, constantly screams about unnecessary information. He doesn't care about how you do in the class at all. If you can take it with a different professor, I suggest you do so.
screams about anything and everything under the sun except what we actually need to learn. and I mean SCREAM. today he took points off for people that didn't staple their homework assignments, yet he snuck into the classroom early to take the stapler away for people who may not have stapled it. something small but shows his teaching style
Absolutely awful. He SCREAMS and is completely out of his mind. He's constantly telling us that we will never get our dream jobs and that we are going to k!ll his unborn granddaughter if we're not vaccinated. Content covered in class is completely irrelevant to the work assigned outside of class. Will take points off for no reason.
Awful, he SCREAMS the whole lecture and tells us how we're not going to get our dream jobs and how our actions are going to harm his unborn granddaughter especially if you're not vaccinated. He takes the lecture time to rant about the government, his family, current and past students, etc. but not the actual content. Avoid this man for this class.
Talks about anything but material related to the class, screams at you, and then whispers. Exams are impossible and completely irrelevant to what he discusses in class. Then he yells at us for not doing well when he is the reason. The class is also extremely boring and uninteresting.
I can tell this guy is very nice and passionate about what he teaches but he just does not teach in a way that makes the material easy to understand. It is very difficult to follow him and he goes over things very briefly and then wants us to know them in depth.
Taking him as a professor was terrible. I took a level 102 class for a rock study credit. He made it impossible to understand what he wants us to learn. He left for almost a month, gave us little assignments, and then gave us a test two days after he came back, with no review or clear understanding of what the test would be on. Terrible professor!
Dr. Burkhart is respected nation wide.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have ever had. Was here for class the first 2 weeks and then leaves and goes on a trip for 3 weeks while barely posting anything on D2L. First class back after being gone he tells us that we have our first exam in two days and that the study guide "should" be posted the day before the exam.
A very odd man. He was here for class for 2 weeks and then goes on a trip for 3 weeks while barely posting anything on D2L. First class back after being gone he tells us that we have our first exam in two days. He screams and whispers. Exams are very hard. He yells for us not doing well when he is the reason. Talks about random crap a lot.
