He's a funny Canadian. As long as you learn the material you should be fine. His tests are less challenging than the other BIO142 teachers but they're very ambiguous though he's quite helpful during his office hours
took him for summer physiology. Good teacher. Test and exams are very doable. take it
He's entertaining and approachable. He's also really willing to help and extremely patient. Everything is 100% multiple choice, so if you're good at that, go for it. If it's not your strong suit then I wouldn't advise taking his class.
Coolest dude ever. Corny. But cool. He's really helpful during office hours, and you can tell that he cares. You don't even need to talk bio with him during office hours. All of his tests are 30 multiple choice, and if you payed attention in class, you won't see anything on the test that you haven't seen before. But read the questions carefully.
Exciting,Very Intelligent, Clear. REALLY cares about student’s success. Devotes lots of time and effort formatting presentations, slides and material (Class audio&slides online). Excellent job condensing and explaining all complex subjects.Fun and Informative class. 1@home quiz every Fri. 3-tests (30q M/C). Nicest Guy and Best Prof. Take Dr.C-100%
took him for bio--class was hard because I am not very good in sciences....however, very funny, goofy guy with a dry sense of humor. very easy to talk to and always willing to meet with students. if you are pre-med or taking a science based major, highly recommend! if just taking for a lab, be prepared to study, but still great guy
great professor, but some test questions were honestly thought to be misleading.
Cafferty was kind of weird, but definitely nice. He wanted his students to learn, but his tests are quite hard and cover a lot of material. His final exam is cumulative and accounts for almost all of your final grade. Would recommend overall.
Has the best/most helpful powerpoints ever made. Download/print them out before class so you don't waste time drawing/writing what's already given to you. Just add to what he says. Tests are fair, all MC. Final is a big chunk but it can redeem you if your midterms didn't go well. Good lecturer, funny, and helps a lot in office hours.
Cafferty's PPTs may be helpful for some students, but for me they were very dense with no rhyme or reason to the presentation of the information. He doesn't really add much in lecture beyond the slides. Rushes through slides because he thinks that every student can simply look at them on BB later. Personally not a fan. Did seem to curve up at end.
Cafferty's teaching style was good, and his midterms are reasonable. The final is worth A LOT (50% of your grade). Definitely study hard, and the tests are doable (They are all MC). He is very helpful during office hours.
Enthusiastic guy, keeps lectures clear and relatively basic. His tests are all MC and are obviously not made my him. Test material didn't adequately match up with lectures and reading, most likely due to him using a textbook questions not associated with the textbook used in class. I went to all SI sessions but didn't help. Would not recommend.
Clear, enthusiastic lectures. Great slides. Questions in class and on problem sets often come up again on exams in a different form so pay attention. Just participate in class, practice the questions, and you'll get a great grade.
Good, interesting professor. A little quirky, in a good way, though. His tests are all multiple choise, but the final is weighted more 50-55% of your final grade. A LOT of memorization... good lecturer, it's just a lot of content to go over, so don't fall behind. Not easy but not impossible.
Take Cafferty if you need to take bio142. Nicest guy ever. Tests aren't tricky but you may not get an A everytime. helpful problem sets, helpful SI, helpful lectures and online podcasts of all his lectures. How can you go wrong with that?! Take him if you want to actually learn some things about biology and like it.
One of the best professors I have taken at Emory thus far.He really cares about his students and goes above and beyond what is neccesary to make sure people understand. He is super helpful in office hours and he is also a cool person to sit down and talk to. If you have an opportunity to take him...DO IT!
Dr. Cafferty approaches physiology from a pretty interesting perspective. He's always engaging the class pretty well, and doesn't shy away from talking about other cool stuff as well (Viagra gets mentioned). His powerpoints are nice, but often leave the big picture stuff up to the student. Make sure to stay on top of the material in his class.
He's a silly little man. His exams are okay (only 30 mc questions), but sometimes a bit nit-picky about details. A TON of information so don't cram last minute. He copies & pastes directly out of the textbook into his ppts- might as well not even attend class. The only reason i look at his ppts is to see what I have to go read from the book.
He's one of the most caring professors that I have come across at Emory. He is very good during office hours. However, be warned, he has gotten a lot more difficult this year. His exams are 30 multiple choice questions and he is very big on application. It's very manageable to get a B on the exam, but hard to aim for that A!!
Oh my god. I just took his final. The whole semester, he was so big on application, so I focused my studying on applying the concepts. But guess what he did? He put a lot of detail-oriented questions. Like some of them, we didn't even cover in the class. Don't take him if you can.
Great guy but test questions can be ambiguous at times. Not bad for an intro class, but choose him with caution for upper levels.
Dr. Cafferty is a really enthusiastic professor, who is willing to help students. However, his tests are really, and most of the questions are application-based, so they are tricky.
All tests were multiple-choice. The information is pretty clear, but the material is very dense and can be overwhelming at times. The tests were extremely tricky - I sometimes felt that Cafferty was intentionally trying to trick you with his test questions rather than actually testing you on your knowledge. Clicker questions for attendance.
two 30 MC tests and then Final was 50% of grade, huge amount of information. Very few MC questions are simple straight from memorization. Have to know concepts backwards and forwards to be able to apply them and there are also detail oriented questions. Overall he's helpful and lectures are clear, but be prepared to study a lot for tests
Tests require you to know information inside and out. not knowing a small detail will leave you guessing between two answers and you can easily fail tests while still understanding the majority of the material. Be prepared to study a lot for human phys. Going to class gives you little extra credit, and he's pretty lenient with the final grade.
Voice kinda grates on me, but my classmates don't really have a problem with him. His lectures are clear cut and although I didn't go to any of the undergrad TA sessions, his grad TA sessions are pretty helpful for reviewing class concepts. Make sure you don't underestimate the tests, they'll surprise you.
He's clearly become a lot harder this semester.
Dr. Cafferty is definitely quirky. He does not have the most interesting lecture style, he does get his information across. No other notes are really needed except the slides, but reading the book helps to clarify difficult concepts. The tests are a little difficult with strange wording and each question counts for a lot.
Do not take his class if you are not good at Bio. I went to him for help because I didn't know why I wasn't doing well on his exams. The first time he gave some helpful tips but when those didn't work he replied "I don't want to tell you you can't learn biology but I'm not sure what the problem is." So yeah, not the most helpful.
Cafferty is not an easy A as some may say. That being said his tests are 30 multiple choice and very tricky. Its hard to do well if you do not study and work for it. His questions are very tough and definitely test a full understanding of the material. You must work very very hard to do well. Dont be fooled.
Cafferty is a fantastic professor. His lectures are amazing and he is able to fit a ton of information into one semesters worth of classes. His tests are multiple-choice, and if you are good at taking MC tests and you study hard (not cramming last minute), you will do well. I would recommend for students who know that they love biology.
Choose someone else if actually serious about biology. Is the only professor that has multiple choice only tests, which is kind of just lazy. Nice for an easier grade than the others, but not as good if you want to learn biology at a higher than normal level. Others do cases and relevant things while he just lectures. Nice guy, average teacher.
Don't need to show up to class but his teaching helps you to understand the material better. He's always willing to answer questions and is a nice guy. Weekly quizzes online are pretty much straight from the powerpoints. I pretty much only studied his powerpoints and did very well on the tests.
so... the class is extremely structured which is something I look for. There are slides that are posted that you can study off of (did not buy the textbook), and problem sets, and online quizzes etc. Tests are poorly worded at times, but I didnt do well in midterms and ended up doing fine in the class. Attend class - clickers and notes are useful!
Biology is going to be hard in general, but this professor did not help the situation. Confusing exams and boring + hard to follow lectures. Reading the book is necessary. Attending lectures is not necessary because the book/internet is more helpful.
Do not take this class if you want a good bio experience at Emory, and definitely don't take this class if you are going pre-med! Awful Awful Awful! Worst professor I have ever had here. Brings nothing new to the table, literally reads to us straight out of the textbook. He doesn't care about YOU or your GPA, just making sure he looks "tough".
Lectures were posted online this semester, however still go to class. Tests and quizzes are heavily based on learning catalytic (LC), POGIL, and problem set questions. If you have a good understanding of the concepts behind each LC question, you'll be fine on most of the exams. Study more of the little details for the finals. Very willing to help
Dr. Cafferty is a really nice guy with a pretty funny voice and tries his best to make BIO 142 interactive. I was borderline at the end of the class but i think he put a nice little curve to make up for his relatively difficult exams. Great guy altogether and promotes activity along with learning.
Cafferty is overall a good professor. It's just that his exams are fricken hard. You think that you know your stuff in and out but he torches you after you take the exam.
Honestly, he is one of the best professors I had at Emory. He REALLY cares about his students and he only wants the best for his students. He is also REALLY good at teaching and you will understand everything. Looking forward to taking human physiology with him. freaking love this man.
You basically have to teach yourself from his slides. His lectures are repetitive and really poorly explained. His tests are all mcqs, but really oddly worded. If you're looking for a good bio professor who will actually focus on learning the concepts, look elsewhere.
Dr. Cafferty cares about what you learn in his class. He's organized and excited about getting to know students. He gets mixed results about how students feel about him, as do most of the intro bio professors. I primarily learned from the textbook and used his lectures as aids to those. He tries hard to keep the students entertained.
Relatively speaking, cafferty gives harder tests. His first test was so long, a lot of students didnt even finish it. I would say you should take notes from all his ppt and make sure to redo all the POGILS, learning catalytics, quizzes, and problem sets before test day. His review day questions are very much like his test questions.
I really don't get why everyone thinks his tests are unreasonable. They're completely doable as long as you work hard, and are intelligent and highly motivated. Emory is a tough school and if he didn't give harder tests to prepare us for the MCAT, then why should he be paid? He's very kind as a gentleman, and is very thorough as a lecturer.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! He genuinely cares about his students and how they're doing in his class to the point that he offers "active office hours" designed primarily for getting to know his students better. His lectures are interactive and interesting, which makes it a lot easier to remember the information for his (mostly) lecture-based tests.
Dr. Cafferty is one of the best biology professors at Emory. He cares for his students and is extremely accessible outside of class. His lectures are a bit boring ocassionally as he just reads off the powerpoint slides, yet that is all the material that gets tested and the exams are very easy if you look over those slides. Would highly reccomend
If you dont like Dr. Cafferty... then that is your fault. The man literally does everything to ensure our success. His slides are so well detailed, and if you know them, you are pretty much guaranteed a B at least.
Kind of a rude professor. When students asked questions, he made it seem as though the answer was obvious and adopted a condescending tone. Uses a lot of biological jargon when teaching, which is good, until it becomes so excessive it's hard to understand what he's saying, like he's purposely using complicated terms to confuse students.
Cafferty is pretty socially awkward in the way you would expect a bio professor to be, but seems to genuinely care for his students (he has TONS of office hours). His lectures aren't great because he answers questions by introducing more confusing material and advanced biology jargon. For a non-premed student, this wasn't a great class.
Dr. Cafferty is very passionate in what he teaches and he gives good lectures. However, don't be fooled by the online assignments and mastering bio, these won't raise your grade that much. The grade will be determined by 3 tests and a final, and they get pretty hard. Some material won't be covered in ppts so make sure to read the textbook.
Out of all the bio professors Cafferty's lectures are by far the most concise and straightforward. His tests are all multiple choice and true/false questions and majority of then come from lectures or worksheets. He's always open to questions and genuinely enjoys teaching.
He's a good lecturer, and is pretty good at teaching, but not the best person. He can be condescending, and lacks empathy. Very invasive during class, and NEEDS to have boundaries. A professor should be more professional than this. Help students strive instead of simply showing off your skills.
Cafferty is great! The material is interesting and he explains it in a way that just makes sense. His tests are all multiple choice, but they're fairly easy as long as you keep up on the reading and do the weekly quizzes. He uses LC for attendance. Go to the TA mentor sessions for help! He's also adorably awkward, which makes going to class fun.
Didn't take him for bio 141/142 but took 336. Great professor. Records his lectures so you can listen to it again if you were confused during class. Test is all MC and memorization heavy.
Tests do not reflect material at all. This class had the easiest material to comprehend out of all my courses this semester but it was the only class I did not end with an A in.
Professor Cafferty is great. The most organized professor I've ever had. Seeing lots of reviews calling him uncaring, etc. - I'm not sure where that's coming from. He expects his students to work hard but 100% gives them lots of opportunities and is accessible for extra help outside of class. Lots of material and memorization required to do well.
Very engaging and straightforward lectures that I enjoy listening to and are recorded if you miss class. Many opportunities for office hours but tests do not reflect the material at all. The class is VERY memorization heavy but test Qs are all T/F and MC but are worded in an extremely confusing and vague manner.
The class itself is very well structured and fair. His powerpoints have everything you need to know for the exams. I'm not one to give a bad rating, but I've gotta say that he is genuinely not the nicest guy I've ever met. He comes across as super nice and welcoming in class, but this is not reality. Undermines students/seems to lacks respect.
Just like many have said, the test does not reflect anything during lecture or worksheets at all. Memorization heavy, but also you sometimes have to think outside the box to arrive at an answer not immediately obvious from lecture.
Dr. Cafferty's lecture functions to grasp important points in the chapter, but you shouldn't expect him to cover all. Read and memorize the textbook, and you will be fine. His class activities, attendance, homework worth 20%, and are easy to get. He has no annoying pop quizzes, but he has some challenging weekly assignments.
This course was quite rigorous it was lecture heavy and timing on exams was difficult for one of the exams. The exams required memorization and application, but if you complete all weekly problem sets, you shouldnt have many issues. Cafferty did a very strong job in explaining course material and all of the resources made the material engaging.
Cafferty teaches the material very well and has a strongly organized class. Exams don't really reflect the problem sets too much. Class is memory heavy but also application is needed which I wish he gave more practice with. He isn't a very caring professor however. He seems very welcoming in class but is opposite in his office hrs.
Dr. Cafferty is a spectacular professor. His lectures are comprehensive and his passion for the content shines through. In order to succeed in the class, pay good attention to his lectures, keep up with problem sets, consciously do the weekly assignements, and find a study group that works for you. Extremely helpful for the MCAT. Would take again.
His tests are tricky. He reviews problems during class/at home fine yet the test throws curveballs that weren't discussed. I saw material for the first time on exams, which weren't even on practice exams assigned. You also have a very short time for each exam and a LOT of problems to do, which doesn't help in deciphering the unfamiliar concepts.
Not the best professor, but not the worst either. Lectures can be informative, but things get lost in the details and the big picture/connections weren't emphasized. Exams aren't too tough but have a LOT of questions to do in a short period of time. Weekly assignments can be challenging. Don't feel like I learned as much as I could have.
Dr. Cafferty is a good choice for intro biol lectures. He does his best to make a 100 person class as interesting as he can, but he's not phenomenal or anything. Solid choice and great guy though!
I think he is an okay lecturer. However this man really really likes when you go into his office and pretend like you care. So if you want a rec from him later make sure to share a word or two at his office everyday so that he thinks you like him.
He's alright, the okay choice for a professor overall. He tends not to really to review or go over quizzes, which can be annoying when you don't understand why you missed something.
Has a sense of humor, and his lectures are pretty engaging. Some of the homework, especially assigned readings and problems, was irrelevant to what would actually be tested on exams, which was somewhat off-putting. Exams themselves were generally fair and not overly difficult though, and he gave significant extra credit. Overall a solid choice.
The class graded mostly by exams but they are relatively easy. He also gives plenty of extra credit. The class is well structured and in my opinion hes a pretty good teacher.
Really nice guy who genuinely cares. Pretty funny too tbh
You either love him or you hate him. His grade is majority exams with the final being basically 40% of your overall grade. There is so much additional work outside of class that takes hours which are about 3-5% each in the overall grade. It's a lot of work that all comes down to how well you can memorize.
Dr. Cafferty is a great prof for human phys. He is very caring and has lots of office hours opportunities, and he is very passionate about what he teaches! The tests are very memorization-based, with a few final questions about synthesizing the information. The final is a large chunk of your grade. Make study guides and review the POGILS for tests.
Definitely the best professor for BIOL336. Did not feel much different than intro bio: each class you go over a powerpoint, tests are over the powerpoints, need to be precise on the tests to do well. In-class POGILs help explain the concepts clearly. Cafferty is a great person, makes lectures interesting, and is good at answering questions. 93% A.
Not as good as I was expecting, presented confusing info in lectures that directly contradicted the textbook readings. Textbook readings often went into more depth than was needed but every now and then he would throw in some random specific fact that was buried in the textbook. Probs wouldn't take again, but definitely not the worst choice possibl
His grade is majority exams with the final being basically 40%. The last exam ruined my entire semester's work! Every lecture was rushed to finish and you only pass if you memorize. The class average was a B+.
Dr. Cafferty is a really solid professor for 142. Grades are comprised of midterm exams and 10-point weekly-assignments. The weekly assignments are a breeze. He can be a little fast during some lectures, but all the slides and the recordings are posted so as long as you keep up with the weekly assignment, exam preparation isn't to intensive.
Cafferty is great for 142! He's a really engaging lecturer and gives a lot of material to prepare for tests. He teaches a lot of the content with in-class worksheets and POGILs. Exams were online and straightforward. Love him so much and would 10/10 recommend for anyone taking 142.
the class structure is predictable and organized. tests are easier than other professors from my experience
A very forgiving person and probably the easiest biology teacher I've ever had. 10/10 recommend and his slides are amazing
Such an easy class with a charismatic professor! He is nice and funny and he makes the class so easy to do well in. Definitely worth it.
I am currently in medical school and am writing this rating because of how well Dr. Cafferty prepared me for my basic healthy physiology unit. BIOL336 is tough (be ready to work hard, study and really take the time to understand how things work), but has truly made medical school easier because of how well Dr. Cafferty teaches critical concepts.
Dr. Cafferty was entertaining and funny during lectures and really cares about his students. We had fun group activities during lecture and the class was pretty engaging. If you ever need help, don't hesitate to go to office hours and/or LA sessions. Both are extremely helpful and necessary to do well on the tests.
Cafferty is very passionate and it definitely comes through in his lectures; he is very engaging, even when the lecture is super dense. The class is difficult with 2 midterms, a combined exam 3 + final exam, and weekly quizzes. Study after each lecture and go to LA sessions, the more exposure you have with the content, the better you'll do.
Great lecturer. Has office hours that are a little unorthodox. I definitely recommend Dr. Cafferty!
Dr. Cafferty is very enthusiastic and kind. He explains concepts well both in class and out of class. Has odd office hours times sometimes. The only difficulty in this class is the sheer amount of material you need to memorize, especially towards the end of the semester.
Dr. Cafferty is a pretty good professor overall. Sometimes he rushed through difficult concepts which made understanding them hard. However, his slides are amazing and are enough to do well in this course. Very test heavy but the tests are fair. There is a lot of information in the class so make Anki cards to help with memorization!
Dr. Cafferty is definitely the best option for BIOL 336. The class was online over summer so it was very easy to earn good grades, but you still learn a lot of information just by watching the lectures and attending zoom. The course content helped a lot for MCAT preparation as well :)
dont check his instagram
hard class and your whole grade is depended on 3 exams
instagram following is cooked
Dr. Cafferty was a really good professor and very enthusiastic about the material. Yes, it's lecture and test heavy, but you really shouldn't expect otherwise from a Human Physiology course. A lot of his exam questions come from quizzes, PollEv, and problem sets. If you take good notes, you will be fine.
Nice professor just a hard class
Dr. Cafferty is an excellent professor who always tries to get you engaged in lectures. I found the POGILs and pollens helpful. The slides are detailed and have everything you need to know—if you can remember them. Still, this is a very hard class, and this is the most I've studied for a final, still barely got enough for an A(with EC).
Don't really need to go to lectures as slides are in-depth. Memorize the slides a week before, work the problem sets, go to LA sessions, and you should be chilling for exam. He's a nice guy and reuses questions a lot (PollEv/HW/Midterm Qs). Gets a 4 b/c lecture is too dense and POGILs, while useful, aren't structured the best. Take him if you can.
Nice professor with great in-depth lecture slides, but the class covers so much content that it's hard to study for. Class covers 50%+ of bio MCAT content. The tests require no critical thinking, and it's pretty much regurgitating the information from the slides. Would highly rec taking the class online in the fall if u can bc in-person is hard.
