Seems nice, but is not a very good teacher. Shame since he is highly regarded by other teachers in the department.
A great professor. He's funny as hell and easy to learn from. I can tell he has a great deal of passion for literature.
Great teacher! Great in class, and willing to help out of class. This class is not simple, like most of you want, but it is the challenge that makes it so great. It's ok to think, ya know. Patrick is challenging and fair. Take his class; he is best.
I remember back in the day--he was an excellent teacher and he was kinda cute!

Good guy. Great teacher and funny! I really enjoyed his creative writing class. It was challenging and fun!
The class was very scattered and really had no substance. There was horrible time management when things needed to be done. We should be doing our final paper on our perspective not an interview since it is the first time this class was done.
He has passion for teaching and literature. He really makes you think, and does his best to focus on the perspective of the students. He is easy going and goes out of his way for his students.
Great guy! Has a passion of literature so deep sometimes you dont know what hes talking about
He was a great teacher and promoted class participation. Has a great knowledge of the topic, and very inspirational. I would love to have another class with him! His feedback is all possitive, and he never brings negative comments or tones to the class. Luv him!
Good teacher. Tends to ramble on and talks really fast. That was the first thing i noticed was how fast he talked. Good teacher over all. Would recommend him
AWESOME teacher... i mean that with all my heart... he is very nice and never puts a student down....i thought he was great professor for english.
Doesn't get the concept that writing is subjective. isn't very open minded
He was awesome, yes he could be long winded and over-excited at times. But, that's what motivated me to attend class and participate. Loved him!
Mr. Callan is a great professor! This was my first class so I thought there was a lot of reading, but looking back on it, it wasn't that bad. Mr. Callan is always available during office hours to go through projects with you. Really great teacher = really great class. :-) I would give him a 5 for clarity, but it's CREATIVE writing.
Prof. Callan knows his material. The structure of the class is great, varied exercises and he rewards hard work and true creativity. Finds gold in all stories, its obvious he loves the work. He'll help explore the writer in anyone. Go to class, it is more fun then whatever you are skipping it for! I still talk/ask for advice a year later.
LOVE this guy. You can tell he really cares about what we're doing. The assignments weren't easy, but they were fun, and he's always happy to help if you need it. Definitely recommended.
Cool but wacht out when u hand in the homework
Good teacher, overly excited and talks a little to much at times but he gets the point across clearly. He is well informed, very rigid on assignments, but is willing to help students that are making a effort.
I absolutely love Callan! He was so funny, and he really loves what he is doing. He definately knows his stuff, and is ALWAYS willing to help if you need it. There is some homework, but it's pretty easy and he grades pretty easily as well. RECOMMENDED!!!
Awesome! He was the best! He really cares if a student does well or not. Also knows his stuff, which is refreshing! Wish I had another english class to take so I could have him as a professor! Do you teach math Callan? =)
great professor. challenging but fair and helpful. has a true passion for writing and literature. very engaging, and genuinely interested in your work, in class or out. i highly recommend his creative writing class.
Callan is just a great professor. He's a good writer. The exercises we did in class were really helpful and fun. He gets so exciting about things, he practically starts bouncing. He's always available if you want to go over anything you're written. He's an amazing professor. He made my first semester really enjoyable. Take anything you can with him
easy class. he makes you do alot of work, everynight you will have readings, ontop of other assignments he gives throughout the semester. if you do all of it you will get a good grade, but gets redundant after a while
Great teacher.I didnt think i had a chance to get an A due to my writing but he helped me throughout the course and taught me how to write
Professor Callan was generally a good teacher - he was soft-spoken and kind of beat around the bush sometimes, which was annoying, but he was always willing to help and I had some great times in class.
I love to write and this class really helped to stretch me in every aspect of writing. He is a great teacher as long as you do your work and many atimes you can get away with doing your homework while he rambles on about himself in the beginning of class. He makes you write 2 short stories, 4 poems and 1 one act play. Easy class and credit.
Professor Callan is a terrible teacher. He suppresses students that are willingly open to actively participate in class. The class was very enjoyable to me at first, sense then, he has completely stopped my willingness to participate. The class has now become extremely miserable for the lousy fifty minutes I have to attend.
Prof Callan is an amazing professor. He is so funny and is always willing to help students if they are unclear about the assignment. I naturally suck at argumentative papers, but he lead me into the right direction! I only wished he taught in an Honors level, because I would have definitely signed up for it..take his class, you will not regret it
He is a great professor and I would definitely recommend him. His class was the first time I didn't absolutely hate going to English class. Only problem is he is not open-minded. He interprets poems and readings his own way, so make sure you remember how he interprets things so you can get a good grade on the tests. Other than that he is awesome!
One of the nicest professors at MCC. Highly recommended!
He talks about his life experiences every chance he gets. Very self involved, and takes credit for making you do wonderful work. Talks constantly about nothing, and is very irritating. Would NOT take him again. Rude to other students in the classroom, tells in front of class who might be withdrawn. Un-professional.
takes 40 minutes to explain the simplest concept, then only 10 min left to get into it. demands your attendance, promptness, & attention, but doesn't show you the same respect. conferences always run late & often he won't get to you, then faults you on the final piece if it's not what he wants. if you disagree with a creative issue, he'll fault you
Callan is a great teacher. There is a small homework assignment almost every night but it always ties in with future papers that are due. This makes writing them not such a dread because he makes it very clear what he wants in them. Attendance matters. Can be long winded as others mentioned but its not really a problem for me.
I have never listened to more incoherent rambling in all my life. He often gets off topic, is true to the course syllabus and has a very high expecation of students. He is often late to class yet, will get on you or refuse to let u into class if your more than 5 inutes late. He is not a people person, arrogant and argues with students.
callan is useless dont take him he seems all helpful and easy and then trys to be a hard ass which he is not good at he rambles alot and if you take him make sure you write a comma after every word in your papers
He is so draining and talks a lot. Overall he sucks.
Very very good professor. HIs class is interesting. I took it one night a week for 4 hours. And i ejoyed every mintue of it. It was a little reading assignment every night. And the whole class was spend discussing your thoughts. When he would read the stories you felt like you was in it. loved the course.
He enjoys what he is teaching however when it comes to conferences he can be arrogant and rude. He really does want a coma after every word and that was after taking my story to the writing center. Don't be too predictable, he doesn't like that either. From past reviews it seems he used to be friendly back in 2008. I wonder what happened.
Awesome teacher. Conferences were very helpful. lowest grade was a B. Very fair teacher and always willing to help students with their work. Understanding and funny. When I take another ENG course, I'm going to see if I can get him as a teacher. Wish the course was longer bc it was that fun!
One of my favorite professors. All these people that are complaining either didn't show up on time, or didn't do their work. If you show up on time, and put some effort in P.Callan is willing to help you out. He does ramble sometimes, but usually he's trying to get you thinking and give you ideas.
This is an easy class if you keep up with writing responses and you share your opinion in class. The only issue I had with Mr. Callan was that he rambled a lot.
A very nice Guy. He will work hard for you. He made his class very interesting and the three hour class flew by. I would highly recommend Him and Eng-214 as a class for students who are English challenged.
This guy thinks he knows everything about writing. He doesn't, because I know more about poetry than this guy. He's good at the other subject in creative writing.
Great guy! Participate to keep things moving, bc if no one says anything he can run on. Knowledgeable. Very well meaning, and always willing to answer questions and help you improve your work. I highly recommend him!
He grades to critically, even when I would get help from the writting center. The only thing you are graded on in this class is your 4 essays, attendance and if you are paying attention. I never recieve anything higher than a C+ on my papers!
Great professor. I've learned so much more about myself as a writer through his exercises and conferences. I would definitely recommend him, just be prepared to write!
He respects Every student's voice in discussion. His passion influences audience! Highly recommended!
Isn't very clear on his instructions. He's very sarcastic at times. There has been times where he's been rude to some of the students in class. Like telling them he doesn't like how they dress. Even made a friend of mine cry. He's strict on grammar. Really wish I had something nice to say about him. But I don't.
Not very clear on what he wants from you. Not very helpful he is the second worst teacher I ever had at MCC.
I received an failing grade from professor Callan. did more work then some of the other students that received an A. I was miserable each time I attended this class
Don't take his class. Class is boring doesn't help much. Not a good teacher in my opinion. Very hard grader
He is very easy going and helpful IF you go and ask him. He grades essays kind of hard but over-all is an awesome teacher. I would totally take a class with him again
Prof. Callan is great. He is very helpful, though he does tend to ramble a bit. If you pay attention, you'll do well. Also, he didn't seem to be as strict with attendance as some people are saying. The door was usually propped open throughout the whole class.
Prof Callan seems to love teaching English and that makes the lectures nice. The grading system is easy to understand. I suggest taking any opportunity to have him go over your papers with you. He is thorough and catching your bad writing habits early on will greatly help you in class. The smaller papers really help when it comes to the big ones.
Always willing to help, has a clear syllabus. BUT...goes off on the WORST tangent during class, absolute Hell to sit through. Write your papers his way, or fail them.
Professor Callan was very helpful and an extremely great teacher. He was easy going and we always got out of class early. There was very little homework and only 3 papers the semester.
Three classes so far and I sit think what am I doing here? He tells you to write and then talks nonstop about any thought that pops in his head. He seems to have ADHD and doesn't stay on topic. Wish I had read the reviews before I signed up and now drop time is over. Don't they monitor these Profs? A lot of students just sit staring into space.
I'm a strong English student, first off. I thought that Callan was a good teacher. He is fair-minded and easy to get along with. There are 3 essays in this course and a short presentation and little homework assignments. He will edit your essays before you turn them in. Overall, this course was a dream compared to what I thought it would be like.
This guy is ludicrous. He gives you 10 minutes to come up with one, then goes around the entire class, criticizing the choices and telling each person what they SHOULD write instead. He spends extra long criticizing the topics he considers especially bad. He admits that he wouldn't even give textbook essay examples 'A' grades. Good luck!
This class is hard if you skip classes and don't do the homework. There are only 3 papers to hand in, but you have to write them to how he wants it. The only way to pass is by going to office hours. Make sure your ahead of the class since he will let you have days of conference and also read the homework there is a quiz almost every day(1 question)
I don't recommend this professor if you aren't a good writer. Writing is stressful for me and I found his attitude not so encouraging.
I wanted to find SOMETHING good to say about him as a professor, but I just can not. He rambles on and on. I am a very focused student but can not for the life of me follow along or see his point. He will give you the lowest grade he can. Worst professor.
He is a very nice person. Although, you read a lot in the book and write responses every single class then discuss them. It is a never ending cycle of the same thing every class so expect that.
I previously had Professor Callan for ENG 101 and loved how he taught. I took ENG 202 and was not disappointed. While the class in writing intensive, he makes it interesting and fun. The class was smaller, which was nice because we all were able to get to know one another. I would definitely recommend him.
One of my favorite professors! Professor Callan is so passionate and knowledgeable. Attendance is a must as participation in class discussions is a large part of your grade. He assigns readings from the textbook every class, along with a written response to a few guided questions, which he collects every so often to grade. Very nteresting class.
Expects the most out of ENG 101 students
avoid at all costs!
If you're taking ENG-101, don't expect to pass if you're functionally illiterate. He has a lot of knowledge to offer as long as one has an open mind. He's also willing to write a letter of recommendation for students he believes in.
You will have to read a lot outside of class. He focuses on short stories, poems and a few plays. For each piece you have to have a written response ready to present in class. The book contains all the poems and short stories but if you want you could just print them off the internet. He sets clear guidelines for his assignments and grades as such.
Don't take this class unless you can read minds! He doesn't tell you what he's expecting so then you go home write your paper and he hates it. Says it doesn't look like it should.. Well then teach us!
I thought professor Callan was fantastic. He was very nice and easy to get along with. He will give you a good grade if you actually try on his assignments, and he is very open minded. His passion for the subject he's teaching is inspiring and he encourages you to do your best.
Absolutely a fantastic professor. He will give you detailed feedback on what aspect of your writing needs to be improved. He has years of experience and is happy to share it with you. If you are a talented writer he will go out of his way to ensure your success.
Callan is in a league of his own. He is someone who truly loves literature and loves to tell you about it. The key to his class is to just do the assignments and discuss it in class. You don't have to share every time but an occaisional interjection to share your thought goes a long way.
DOES NOT PUT GRADES ON BLACKBOARD
Repeats himself. Hates all technology in class. Is helpful with essays and willing to explain better but is a harsh grader.
I could actually stand the content and homework that part wasn't bad. The part that I didn't like was his passive aggressiveness towards his students. He would get irritated and short if someone was merely coughing too loudly. I asked a student a quick question while he talked because I missed the day prior and he was so rude the way he said it.
Prof Callan is a great guy. He's super quirky and funny. Read all of the assigned readings. There will be quizzes. Go to him if you need help, he's very accessible. Don't skip class. Don't be a jerk in class. Participate a lot. The essays can be challenging, but he will help you if you're in need. Overall, recommended.
I understood full well this was a lecture course going into it; it's English, after all. That said, don't expect to get too many comments or questions in edgewise (or at all, for that matter); this guy LOVES to talk. Keep up on homework, study for quizzes, and frequently ask for clarification; you'll likely need extra help from the resource center.
Great guy, great lecture approach, makes you write a 1 Page response that's due every class. A little bit stingy with grades. I worked really hard in this class but my result wasn't what I expected.
Professor Callan was awesome to have. People complain he talks too much, but I really enjoyed listening to him because he really gives good food for thought. His lectures are great because he is a really good communicator. I also didn't talk much in his class and my grades turned out good.
Professor Callan described the class as a discussion based class, so I expected to have discussions with my classmates, yet the majority of conversation was dictated by him and his views on what we were reading. We never really got to say what we wanted and if we did, he cut us short and interrupted with his own thoughts.
I don't mind listening to him talk , but it gets to the point where he repeats himself, doesn't let anyone else talk, and guides discussions based on his thoughts/opinions. Personally I had a hard time with knowing what to do for given assignments as he was quite vague, which sucks because he is quite the harsh grader.
Professor Callan is a talker . When there's s absolutely nothing to talk about he will drag the class out for a whole 1.5 hours and there is no point for that. You will need the Ideas and Details book but.... only for like 3-4 weeks I would say, again, pointless. Professor Callan loves when students are participating in class GOOD LUCK!
I had Prof. Callan for an online class. I'm typically really good at English, however, his class was unlike any English class I've taken. He is extremely vague with explanations and doesn't get back to you until it is already too late. On top of that, he is pretty harsh with grading, which doesn't help when you're confused and get no explanation.
Too tough of a grader.
I had Professor Callan for an intersession course (English 101). He lays out due dates and assignments very clearly, to the point where it's hard to miss. He is a fairly tough grader, but he gave me great feedback on my essays. Make sure you complete the forums! Getting those in on time really lifted my grade.
One of the best. He will answer every question you have and gives everyone a chance to speak. His lectures on the stories are interesting. You have to write a few short papers-if you actually read the story, do the work, and participate, you'll be good!
Although there was a lot of reading and papers as to be expected because it was an English class, he was very accessible and willing to answer questions. I overall understood the content very easily, and enjoyed taking the class with him. Although there was a lot of work it was manageable.
I didn't do well with english in high school but I did well in this class. Discussion forums are worth a lot of your grade so make sure you do them. There is a textbook for this class and he said you're supposed to read it but I only used it for one assignment. He responds to emails fast and is very helpful
He always talks too much in the class.
Before choosing him as a professor . He criticizes your efforts in to trying to pass. He talks in circles
Do not take this professor if you can help it. Deviated from syllabus constantly and has absolutely no leniency to help even when miscommunications are his fault.
LOVES to talk but somehow constantly never explained things throughly? And whenever the class didn't understand something and couldn't do the work, he'd just get frustrated without trying to explain it at all and sometimes would end class 30+ minutes early. He was a rather easier grader tho, just didn't give sufficient feedback.
Refuses to actually follow his own syllabus, offers very little to no explanation of what he explains in class and talks in circles constantly He also doesn't seem to remember things he said such as promising to post dates/times for 1-on-1 conferences the Friday before conference week then didn't post them until Monday 1 hour before class
Professor Callan can be a bit long-winded, but engaging with his teaching style pays off. The workload is manageable, and unstuck AI is a great supplementary tool for staying on top of assignments.
While he does talk a lot, he was a pretty alright teacher not so tough on grades.
If you are not attending class every day you will struggle. When you are properly engaged with him in class you get a lot of rich information on how to be a better writer. Definitely is too harsh on grading deadlines and needs to do some housecleaning with online syllabus but is a delight if you are head down and willing to take/ask for advice.
not impressed. tough grader, clearly has favorites. ONLY positive, good communication
Took Intro to Lit online asynchronous, was relatively easy and he was a fair grader as long as you follow your guidelines of the assignment or discussions boards.
