Lectures are extremely detailed and very helpful if you go, but you dont HAVE TO. Very accessible outside of class. Helpful during office hours. Sometimes gives extra credit during lectures, so you should probably go.
This is a really hard math class so you will have to go home and teach yourself a lot of content. The exams are really difficult and the professor doesn't do a great job of covering what will be on there.
Went to every lecture in the beginning of the year, but he overcomplicated the material, so I started watching the online lectures which helped more. Very content heavy. Lots of work and time in order to get an okay grade
His lectures are okay, he goes through them fast so if you are taking notes leave space between but he wont upload the notes until days after :/ Use the lectures to supplement textbook and WA hw but be ready to learn stuff outside as well. Hard exams in the class, make sure you go to office hours and tutoring, you're gonna need it!
Gives extra cred on random lecture dates. Often will not be able to cover all material within the period, but always uploads his slides after. If you're confused, he'll pause lecture to go back and explain stuff. Exams are tricky, so make sure to pay attention, do tb hw, WA, and watch Teaching Center practice exam vids to get an idea of test q's.
Professor Carmichael is a solid teacher. I already knew the material but didnt score high enough on the ALEKs test so I had to take it. If you prepare for the exams it will not be too hard.
Lectures aren't mandatory, but if you don't go, you probably won't do well. The tests and quizzes aren't too hard if you study and go to discussions. Weekly homework is assigned, which pretty accurately reflects the test material.
He goes through his lectures VERY fast, so watch the recorded lectures if possible. He makes the material super complicated, and he does not give any shortcuts or tips to help understand the material. He does not do a great job preparing his students for his exams either.
I didn't go to lecture after the first week and just copied notes from the uploaded slides and did the homework (I did go to discussion periods though- that's necessary). I already knew the material from high school so it wasn't that hard. If you don't know the material, go to lecture. And use Broward's resources to help study for exams!
Learned a lot and he is good at explaining things clearly. Tons of homework but its very helpful to prepare for exams. Discussion period is very helpful but lecture attendance is not super important. Sometimes gives extra credit for showing up to lecture so it never hurts. Hes a very chill guy and this was an easy A.
He is a funny guy who clearly loves math. He makes fair exams and I didn't mind this class. Math is not my thing and I better than I thought. Study edge is a must in my opinion because they teach tips and tricks Carmichael dismisses in lecture.
MAC 1147 is a very fast paced course due to its nature, so ignore anyone saying he goes too fast. Prof. Carmichael is an amazing teacher who explains things in a way that is super easy to understand, and if you have any problems he will help you after class or in office hours. The exams he helps make are very fair. Highly recommend him.
It's math at UF. That's all that really needs to be said. It is way harder than it should be. You're going to have to put in a lot of work to be successful and get an A. The exams can make you or break you.
Prof. Carmichael is an amazing professor who clearly cares for his students and for math. He explains everything in detail and is always accessible at any hour and usually responds in 30 minutes. His quizzes are very similar to the exams, and he gives us plenty of resources to prepare for the exam.
Lectures and homework sometimes take a lot of time to complete, and you do 3 modules a week. Carmichael is amazing though, really cares about his students and explains concepts well and is always there to help. Quizzes are open note, just pretty frequent. Exams are like the quizzes, but doable if you study for them. Made me like math more.
Very detailed lectures with plenty of examples. Responds to emails very quickly and will offer any help you might need. Cares about your grade in the course and offers extra-credit for each lecture. Actually sent me an email reminding me to take the first exam after I had forgotten about it.
Prof Carmichael is an amazing professor. The class moves fast. I definitely felt like I was drowning, but that was completely my fault. Everything makes sense, but I procrastinated A LOT. If you have an asynchronous section, keep yourself on track, and you'll be fine. Super great and helpful guy.
Carmichael is a great professor; you simply just have to work a lot in his class which is expected. Be dubious of other reviews saying this class is extremely hard - it's not and Carmichael is super reasonable and generous. I had great TA's and a great time in the class.
Hes a good professor. He answered my emails quickly and answered all of my questions. He tries to make it fun and it is. Very fair professor.
I found him to be an okay professor. He is very willing to work with students if they have a conflict. Just be prepared to work your butt off. I, personally, didn't think his lectures were great. He seemed to explain things in a more complicated way than needed. Also, failing exams will kill your grade. It's 48% of your grade.
Carmichael is super cool and really funny. He is fair and answers questions quickly. However, the homeworks are very time consuming and difficult compared to the lecturers. For a UF math professor, this guy is amazing.
Super funny guy, I find math incredibly boring but he made it interesting in the lectures. Class moves very fast (60ish homework problems a week on about 12 lecture videos with a weekly quiz and a progress exam every two weeks). Definitely feel more prepared going into calc 1.
Made online math bearable throughout the semester. There was definitely a sh*t ton of content that was reviewed, (it's trig and precalc) but I think I can survive calc now because I had Prof. Carmichael. I wish I had his class in-person.
His class was extremely organized. The prerecorded lectures were detailed and helpful. The class is pretty straightforward if you put effort into learning the material in the lectures. Professor Carmichael also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
It's math so of course it's going to be difficult, but Mr. Carmichael is a very funny, understanding, and enjoyable teacher. He tries to make learning fun, and gives you lots of late passes. His exams are the same as the practice tests, and he's very easy to get in touch with outside of class.
You could tell he put a lot of effort into the online course. It was a lot of material but I felt that his lecture videos were extremely helpful. Its is definitely a difficult course and you have to constantly be on top of the work because it adds up and it is a lot. Also dont leave studying for the last minute like I did and you should be fine!
Online lectures were really funny and very informative; Carmichael was very kind and very responsive to emails. Workload is heavy but manageable since this is basically 2 classes in 1, stay on top of it and you'll be fine. Gave 20 late passes, unlimited attempts on quizzes, and 2 tries on all exams except final. Lots of extra credit.
Professor Carmichael gives many lectures throughout the course, but if you pay attention and take notes you will learn a lot from them and do well on quizzes and exams. To prepare for exams I would recommend doing the review quizzes he posts before each one and watching the teaching center reviews.
Great in detail descriptions of everything and did a great job of breaking things down.
Professor Carmichael is easily one of the best if not THE best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures are entertaining and he cracks little jokes to make them bearable. He understands that the class has a lot of work and is very fast paced so he tries to help his students as much as he can. He makes math a lot easier!
It is very important that you stay up to date with the lectures on the homework in this class or you will definitely fall behind. He does lectures and TAs work with you for the rest of the stuff. The material is not too hard but there is a lot of it and you will have to make sure you are accumulating knowledge and not just studying for exams.
Great professor! Offers a ton of extra credit opportunities to post grades. Tests are fine since you have access to previous quizzes to review. Lectures have little funny sayings in them.
king.
He was very helpful during office hours and always kind to students. He seemed very knowledgeable on what we were being taught and was always prepared for class. Just do the practice quizzes and reviews before exams and pay attention during lecture and everything is pretty easy.
Reviews before every test which helps a lot. Pay attention in class especially on zoom or not you will be lost. Get study edge if you can helps a lot.
I had the luck of having Professor Carmichael for my first math class, MAC1147. His lectures were really good at hitting at both common cases and edge cases for math. It is thanks in large part to him that I had a solid base for upper-division classes.
Great guy in general and shows he does care about students. Not sure if it was this semester being back from COVID but exams are really tough. Not at all like the practice exams or even old exams from previous years. The second exam the average was a D and everyone complained it was impossible.
TLDR: Good prof. Hard class Prof. Carmichael is actually a really cool guy with a great sense of humor. He gives a quality lecture, which is good because you better show up for them if youre not great at math. Full disclosure: your TA will probably suck, you'll do a lot of homework for very little credit, and your exams are hard and at awful times
The course's content is difficult, but Prof. Carmichael made it easy to understand. His lectures are thorough and hilarious. There is a lot of HW - the problems on the HW can also be a bit challenging, but I found they helped me better understand the material. I also had a great TA, but I know others who've had bad ones.
This was probably the most difficult Precalculus class Ive ever taken. Lots of homework after every single lecture and extremely complex and advanced tests. No extra credit besides the fact that he drops one grade. Easy to fail and difficult to get an A. Only take this Math if you HAVE to.
His lectures are great, and he explains well, but his exams are really hard. He also doesn't curve despite the average being a D.
Prof. Carmichael is extremely respectable and a very good teacher. There was so much homework that it was hard to keep up sometimes but he offers 20 late passes on both the homeworks and the quizzes, which each have unlimited tries. The exams are super difficult though, with super low averages and no curving. Hardest math/precalc class i've taken
If you want to take the online class, don't. The online class exams are all free response, meanwhile the in-person get multiple choice. Seems highly unfair to me. On the final exam the in-person people also get free points while us online people don't. Material was fine, I just found it would be easier to get a better grade in-person...
do not take this course the exams are nothing like the practice problems and lectures and the averages on all our exams was an F.
Carmichael is a good prof but the course itself is just a lot. The exams are hard, his quizzes to review for the exam are nothing like it. The exams are more about applying what you learned. It also really depends on which TA you have, some suck and others actually give you real exam practice problems. This class is hard but Carmichael teaches well
Professor Carmichael is an incredible professor and you could tell you knew what he was talking about, but the tests were nothing like the lectures or the practice quizzes he gave us. They were incredibly hard and the average was always around a 50-60. The worst part was the TA. The TA knew nothing about the course and made mistakes every time.
There is homework on every lecture that is due 2 days after the lecture. You will have 3 lectures and homework assignments every week and quiz at the beginning of each week, it's not too bad though because you get 20 late passes to use on homework and quizzes. He has 4 exams and a final exam, his review quizzes tend to be harder than his exams.
Study for his exams, they're a lot harder than the homework. Otherwise, he's kind and tries to connect with his students despite the large size. He explains things well and gives passes for homework. Probably better to take it in person than online though.
Great professor who teaches well and really cares about his students! His tests are much more difficult than anything you see in class or on the homework, so make sure you practice with more difficult problems and go to the teaching center for tutoring. Gives lots of opportunity to succeed (EC, drops lowest exam score, drops quizzes/hw). 10/10 prof
He is so sweet and so funny BUT this is quite literally the hardest math class Ive ever taken. Only passed b/c drops lowest exam score and pulled a B on final. I put HOURS on end into studying/going to tutoring for each exam and still did poorly due to how different his exams were from the resources he gave us to study with. So hard.
As a student with a disability being away this prof mad emy life very easy. He was always prompt in emailing my advanced lecture slides (he wont do it for everyone but he posts the slides after class) the exams are tough but he was always available for questions. Go to office hours and do the homework without cheating and you will do great.
Professor Carmichael seems like he likes his job and I understood his lectures well, but I always felt like the exams were 10x harder than the materials we studied with. I never really did well. That being said, his course is very fast paced. Also, do the extra credit because it brought me from a B+ to an A-. Mandatory attendance for discussions.
Proff. Carmicheal made me lose my motivation to learn. I started to struggle on his tests and when I went in for help he was no help at all. He answered my question and did not give any guidance nor tried to help me understand the material. I would not recommend taking his course. He treats it like a weed-out class and felt he wanted me to fail.
I took him because I didn't feel confident enough to take Calc 1 at the time. If you are thinking of the same make sure to really pay attention to the parts of MAC1147 about logs and trig.
One of the hardest precalc classes ive seen. Tons of homework and lectures although they only count for a small portion of your grade. The exams are a majority of the grade and are difficult. Best way to review is to study the review quizzes as much as possible. And if you are taking online do your first take of the exam and study it.
Professor Carmichael's lectures are very informative and really had you understanding what he showed you. However, the lectures are nothing like the homework and even more so the test. Really the key to this class is to study previous exams to get an overall good exam score. The tests get difficult so do your best early on to keep your grade up.
Great professor for this class! Very helpful.
This class is HARD, especially since I already struggle in math. The in-person courses get multiple choice exams, but the online students have free responses for all exams. I understood the lectures, but quizzes were HARD, AND EXAMS WERE EVEN HARDER. However, retake exams are similar material for the retake which sort of saved me. HARD CLASS
Took diff eq with him over the summer, pretty good prof overall for this class. Super fast paced but he did a good job with uploading lectures + notes and being accessible for questions. Funny guy and good at explaining difficult math concepts
The class was decent, exams were heavy material based and lectures were really important. My TA was AWFUL. Hated mandatory TA discussion attendance because it was a waste of time and didn't help at all!
There is lots of homework but it is pretty straight forward if you pay attention to the lectures. He explains the topics very well and always sends the recording after if you need to go back. Lots of studying for the exams but there are no suprises.
Prof. Carmichael has a decent sense of humor, but beyond that, I wouldn't recommend this course for the online section. Although it is fairly easy and doable if you stay on pace, his exams for online students (even those of us that live 100s of miles from Gainesville) is free response, while in-person is easier w/ multiple choice.
Attendance to lectures were not mandatory; however, attendance to math breakout sessions is. Professor Carmichael lectures relatively fast but he does send a video recording and the notes after class. A lot of the homework is nothing similar to what he lectured in class and makes it very hard to complete. The exams get harder as the course goes on.
He is a good prof but there is a large amount of homework which is doable if you manage your time. Recommend going to office hours and tutoring more often for trig portion of the class because that's when it gets more difficult. He is good at explaining things though and very helpful and kind in office hours
Prof. Carmichael was a great professor during the lectures. He always seemed to have his information prepared and rehearsed which made the topics easy to understand during class time. However, the exams were always a struggle. I only managed to get an A on one exam throughout the whole term, even though I spent hours each day studying. Be prepared.
The professor is extremely nice and provides students with 20 late passes to submit late homework. The number of quizzes, tests, and homework can be overwhelming for some. He provides two attempts on every test and many more on quizzes and homework. One of the quotes he uses from students is that the class made them cry every day. It was accurate.
I enjoyed his humor and lectures and discussions are mandatory to attend. As far as the course goes, it is hard. There are 2-3 HWs due each week along with a quiz. There are 4 exams that are 50% of your grade and the lowest one gets dropped. I recommend studying past exams rather than just the material. The material gets harder throughout the semes
Prof. Carmichael is a pretty likable teacher, although this class can be a lot of work. Three homework assignments a week which can be lengthy, as well as a quiz once a week. There are four exams and the lowest score gets dropped. He also gives 20 late passes to use on homework. Overall, this class isn't too bad, but it does take a lot of work.
Dr. Carmichael was a great professor and really boosted my confidence as a student who struggles with math. I felt I got a better grasp from his teaching than ever before on trig and precalc concepts. There is a lot of homework but I found it helpful. Quizzes may be retaken many times and the lowest test score is dropped.
The class was difficult (easy at first) but Professor Carmichael was definitely a great teacher for a huge lecture course. We didn't get to interact with him much because of how big the class was but he always responded to emails and office hours quickly. The tests weren't easy but studying past exams definitely helped. He is nice.
He did a great job of being there for you even in a huge lecture class. The class was difficult (very easy at first) and there is a lot of homework and quizzes (that you can retake 20 times) so there is a lot of outside work. The exams were hard but he puts up past exams which definitely help. He was great but I didn't love the class.
Great professor! It is a fast paste class but he did a good job of teaching. Seems like he actually enjoys his job. Exams can get a little tricky but using past exams to help study works well. You can take the quizzes online up to 20 times and you get a good amount of late passes for hw (I forgot how many). Discussions are mandatory attendance.
I really appreciate how he tried to make this course as fun as possible through the lectures. I have never liked math, but this course made it somewhat enjoyable. The coursework is pretty easy if you watch the lectures, and if not the videos on Canvas cover almost everything regardless. Would definitely take another one of his classes.
Carmichael is a very good professor but you will need to be ready to put some work in for this class. There are three lectures a week and a homework after each lecture and a quiz once a week. Attendance is not mandatory but I would highly recommend going. This was a good class and I learned a lot.
EXTREMELY hard class if you aren't good at math. Difficulty ramps up rapidly throughout the semester. However, Carmichael is an extremely clear and good lecturer and cares about students. The tests are fair but very difficult. As everyone has said, study previous years' exams. Do not skip lectures. Very long but useful homework, do it all and try.
His lectures were really good at explaining the material. If I ever got confused at one topic it would be fine because he uploads his lectures after class. He was very nice and approachable, and really seemed to be passionate about the lecture material.
Good lecturer, and fair professor. Practice exams are very similar to the real exams. The majority of the course is fairly simple algebra.
This man gives homework until you can't breathe. His tests are nothing like his homework assignments like he says they are, and learning through a bunch of lectures and an insane amount of homework is not the way to go. Please choose another professor who will make your life much easier in terms of homework and tests.
Lectured very quickly on a lot of material. Do not take if you don't have a good base understanding on what the lectures are about. You will spend a lot of time doing homework and quizzes, but you have multiple attempts, so they should be easy grade boosters.
Half of HW/quiz questions weren't covered in lectures AT ALL. Sometimes he doesn't go in depth on certain topics and also some HW question topics come up in later modules. Very time consuming as you have to scour the internet on how to solve half of the HW questions. Takes me the whole day to do this class. Lectures are 3 times per week.
he offers zoom and recordings so lectures (3x a week) aren't mandatory. homework after every lecture and sometimes the questions aren't really covered in the lectures but he has a discussion open for students to ask and answer questions which was super helpful (and sometimes there are videos attached to the questions that are also helpful).
Taking it for practice for calc 1? don't. It bombed my GPA. TA's suck, you're lucky if you get a good one. He teaches differently then HS pre-calculus so just bust out your old notebook for Calc 1 instead of wasting you're money. Don't study for practice quizzes.
Worst professor. This course is required for liberal arts and sciences majors and he expects you to be an expert at math to do well. Getting a B on his Exam was
Professor Carmichael is a very understanding individual, and I can tell he is passionate in teaching. However, I would not take another class with him because of how difficult his exams are compared to homework material (which there is a lot of). I do not feel like my grade reflects my understanding of the content within this course.
I am naturally pretty good at math and have always gotten high exam grades, but this class taught me something different. I feel like the professor makes the exams harder than they need to be. He lectures SUPER FAST. I stopped attending class because he would over the material too fast. I watched the lecture videos he posted. Be prepared to study.
Professor Carmichael is a good lecturer but the course is very difficult. DO NOT take if you are not strong in math OR if you don't need to take calculus after. The lectures are very fast and there is homework after each one. The exams covered a lot of content and were difficult. Passing is possible if you're good at math/have time to study.
Class was pretty easy and lectures went over everything you needed to know. Did the homework and did the past exams before each one. Lowest of the four midterms gets dropped. Decent amount of extra credit offered.
As someone who took precalc in high school, I found this class fairly difficult. I still managed to get an A, but it required quite a bit of studying for someone who was already familiar with the material. He also assigns 30-40 questions per homework assignment, but this practice is pretty much useless for exam studying. Use past exams to study!
I would highly recommend him. Go to class, you'll understand a lot more that way. He is nice and does his best to help students understand. Uses a lot of memes in his lectures, and will talk with you about things besides math. He is a great choice. Class will be a bit tough if you didn't do well in math in high school, but it's like that for anyone
The professor was really great but this course is very intense in the amount of work it requires each week. I think the structure and organization of the course is all really good but just be ready for the effort it requires. Lectures were helpful as well.
very time consuming class; about 3 hw assignments due per week (20-45 questions each). fast paced covering over 34 topics, and 4 exams as well as a final. however, chances for EC, lowest exam, quiz, and homework assignments dropped. this class required a lot of self teaching and looking for resources outside notes. very passionate professor though.
Professor Carmichael has a challenging course, but he is kind and gives good tools to help study. Exams can be kind of tricky and are sometimes a little bit different from the review, but this is coming from someone that struggled with math. There are quite a few lectures and homework assignments, but he gives out lots of late passes and attempts.
Do not take this class. If you have a basis in calc 1, skip this. Lectures move incredibly fast, which is understandable for the amount of content that needs to be covered, but the exams are far more difficult than any of the homeworks or quizzes (which take forever). Carmichael is a cool guy but the exams are awful. GPA killer.
Around 2 hour length homeworks for every lecture, so 3 times a week. Must work hard to keep up with this class and if you can't keep up, you'll get buried and won't have time to go back to what you really need to review. Material isn't necessarily hard, there's just a lot of it. If you have a basis of knowledge in the topics, skip. 4 exams -> final
Professor Carmichael was not a good professor. The exams were SO difficult and did not correspond with the homework. I spent so much extra time doing this class just to barely get by. Pre-calculus should have been a refresher for me because I took it in high school, but he made the class so much more difficult than it had to be. TAKE THIS ONLINE.
This class is a total GPA killer, and shouldn't be as hard as it is. Students get an average of 50-70% on tests, and those weigh 40% of your grade. A ridiculous amount of homework with content not applicable to the test. The test are difficult due to them having different questions he's doesn't go over. My best piece of advice use the textbook.
DO NOT take this class if you dont need to. The exams are excessively difficult in comparison to what he lectures and assigns for hw/ quizzes. Around 30 question homeworks three times a week, due every other day. hw is manageable but the tests will completely drop your grade.
If you watch the lectures you will do good in the class. He gives examples and the homework is very manageable in regards to feedback. This was my heaviest class workload-wise but it's expected when taking pre-calc. He gives a lot of leniency with turning in assignments. He gives two attempts per exam, unlimited attempts for everything else.
Take in person. Online exams are harder in-person students get easier, multiple-choice tests and free points on the final. Lecture videos are outdated and miss key topics, I had to look up how to solve problems for homework. The course is a lot of work so consistent studying is a must. He's not a bad teacher, but the online course feels unfair.
I found this class to be incredibly challenging and frustrating. He mentioned putting things you have learned on the test and putting things never seen on them, which turned out to be the theme of the semester. Simple concepts made difficult. Went to tutoring and office hours, and was defeated and confused most times. Avoid if possible.
The professor is good and is really nice when you reach out to him. But the course is WAY harder online compared to in person with the in-person exams being significantly easier being multiple choice compared to the online ver which includes none with small mistakes such as forgetting in include including a deg/pi value costing the entire question.
This class is war. Moves incredibly fast, and homeworks take FOREVER with little application to actual exam questions. Get ready to study for hours consistently with a lot of self-teaching if you want a half decent grade. Carmichael understands that the class is hard, but there's very little he can do anyway that improve anything about it.
GPA BOMBED. I didn't need the credit but took the class to get some extra practice. There is so much homework that is 30-40 questions every other day and a quiz once a week. However, the assignments were manageable but the tests were NOTHING like the quizzes or past exams and were very tricky. DO NOT take this class unless you have to.
Definitely harder of a class than I anticipated. Lectures are 3x a week and you have 3 homeworks and a quiz per week. Each lecture homework is 30-40 questions and very very time consuming. Felt like I spent way more time on this class than others. Exams do not match homework, but do match past exams. The professor himself is really funny tho.
Lots of work.30-40 questions each hw and VERY time consuming. My TA wasn't helpful at all with answering questions, but it depends who you get. Exams way harder than the homework or quizzes, use the past exams Carmichael posts to study. Prof Carmichael is a good lecturer and chill, funny guy, but the class is a lot. One exam dropped, saved me
Professor Carmichael is one of the best math teachers I've had. Has a lot of extra credit opportunities (DO THEM ALL!) and uploads lectures online. Difficult because of its nature, insanely fast and you will rely on self-re-teaching for exams. TAs were super helpful. For those not confident in math: I feared this class and got an A-, you got this.
3 days to finish hw & 20+ late passes for the semester. quizzes on mondays based on last week's content, but u have the entire day to do it online & questions come straight from the hw just diff numbers. exams are harder than hw but thats a given in any class. review past exams & you'll be good. this class shouldnt be your most difficult one at all
If you struggle with math, this class may be difficult; however, Dr. Carmicheal is rather considerate. There is pretty much HW every other day and you need to either attend the lectures, or watch the recordings to complete them.
TAKE PROFESSOR CARMICHAEL!! I liked precalculus in high school when I took it, and this class, although it was a lot harder, was still a fantastic class to take. There were about 34 lectures and a quiz every four lectures, five exams, and the last was a cumulative exam. There were discussion posts as extra credit. Overall a great professor!
Prof is nice, but the amount of work either forces you to understand the material fully or use artificial intelligence to complete it. LIT215/Office Hours were probably most helpful way to get problems explained. The main pro of having so much homework was that it acted as a much-needed balance to exam grades, which had low averages and no curve
Great prof but the class was hard. 3 lectures per week, 1 homework per lecture (25-35 questions each), and one quiz a week (10 questions). Lots of extra credit. 4 exams plus a final. Lowest exam, quizzes, and homeworks dropped. Study past exams, not the quizzes. Quizzes are way more difficult. Discussion attendance is graded. My TA was terrible.
Class moves at a very fast pace. Each week there are 2-3 hw that are 15-40 questions. There are many opportuities to use "late passes" though. Exams are heavily weighted and questions can be "different" from hws. Quizzes every Monday are based on hws. Cumulative final. Look at previous exams+do practice questions from them to review for exams!
He's a great teacher who likes his job. He often goes into WHY the concepts are the way they are and their importance. Every lecture has homework of 20-40 questions but is relatively easy to do. I didn't do very well on any of the tests but scored highly on homework and quizzes and ended up with a B+ so an A should be achievable with more effort.
Professor Carmichael was very fun to learn under. His lectures were thorough and explained concepts in their entirety. Not only did I learn how to utilize new concepts, but I also learned how and why they work. Although a lot of work, effort, and time management were required, his class was pleasant and straightforward.
Carmichael's MAC1147 is challenging but rewarding. The course covers a lot of ground quickly, so active participation and resourceful study habits, like using unstuck study, are key. Exams can be tricky, but his teaching style and available support make the effort worthwhile.
I absolutely loved Professor Carmichael and I think he's a great professor. He is intelligent, caring, funny, fair, and humble (not pretentious). The exams were very similar to the practice exams/exams from previous semesters, which he readily provides. He is the only math professor I've ever had who records and posts every lecture he gives.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS unless you have to. If you have ANY sort of illness or emergency, he won't care, even if you present him with doctor's notes. I had a serious illness and had to go home to the doctors, but he forced me to take his 8:30 PM exam on Friday stating "If you can make it to class to tell me this you can make it to my exam on Friday".
He is a very nice teacher and gives lots of examples to help you understand. The only complaint I have is that you have a 25-45 question homework assignment due 3 times a week. If you're a procrastinator on that kind of stuff you are going to have a hard time.
Honestly way harder than it needs to be I had to study 2 weeks straight for one exam to get an A, most ppl get Cs on them, no curve, lots of HW and pointless quizzes. He posts past exams but questions change and he likes to throw in curveballs. Exam 4 is one week away from the final so start studying before then bc it's a lot of content
While Carmichael seems to be very kind, this class in unnecessarily difficult. The exams are nothing like the quizzes and HW. They also account for 40% of your grade so they will tank it. No type of curve on exams despite class averages being borderline failing. Be ready to do a lot of HW that doesn't help on exams. Has EC & drops. TAKE ONLINE!
Carmichael is a great professor, but the class is naturally hard (and I mean it is TERRIBLE). He had generous late passes and drop grades. If you show up to class you should be fine (I never did). I mostly got high D's and low C's on the exams, but for the final I locked in and got an 88% so I ended with a B.
I absolutely loved Professor Carmichael and I think he's a great professor. He is intelligent, caring, funny, fair, and humble (not pretentious). The exams were very similar to the practice exams/exams from previous semesters, which he readily provides. He is the only math professor I've ever had who records and posts all of his lectures.
Carmichael reminded that I actually like math. One of the best professors and lecturers I have ever had. He explains topics in depth and never shys away from a question. The class is very clearly laid out no surprises, EXTREMELY fair has extra credit and dropping of an exam. HW heavy and a decent amount of work not a snooze class, work is required!
Carmichael is stellar professor, BUT this class requires a LOT of work. It is precalc and trig, which is offered as 2 separate courses at UF, but MAC1147 are both smashed into one. Ended up using Teachmezach to help solidify the content, really affordable tutoring service.
hard course. I had previously taken college level precalc and gotten an A but wanted an easier first semester so chose to take a math course I knew and severly regretted it. Exams are practiacally all of your grade and are not the same as hw or quizess. Met with proffessor in office hours to try and get help and he made me want to cry and drop.
He was such an incredible professor. I love him. Yes the class is hard, but if you show up you will be fine. Do your homework don't use AI and study.
Do NOT use AI to do your homework. Actually study and do all the HW assignments (even if they're a lot). He's a great professor if you go to his office hours and utilize all the resources you are provided. It's a harder class, but attend lecture and don't cheat. Also, his exams are almost identical to the practice exams he publishes!
Practice exams are not similar to the real exams. Lots of homework, frequently includes difficult questions not discussed in lecture and cannot be solved by peers/TAs. High percent of grade is based on exams, this class took a LOT of effort between exams, homework, and lectures because of the content. do not take as an easy refresh class.
I cannot gas up this man enough, his lectures are the only ones I've ever understood so easily (even though you might have to go back in the recording if you miss something, but the explanation is really good). If you do your homework and the practice quizzes & past years tests, the tests are easy and are pretty much the same.
Lots of homework and quizzes, but very good instruction overall and always willing to help students understand
If Professor Carmichael didn't teach this class, I definitely would've done horrible. His lectures are actually amazing and very informative. I've never been a math person, but I enjoyed learning from him. As long as you follow the lectures and make an effort to do the homework on your own, you'll go great!
Professor is chill and good at explaining the content and expectations. Homework 3x a week but definitely manageable if you stay on top of it. Provides past exams that are exactly like the ones he gives and he drops your lowest exam. You can redo quizzes and hw questions until you get a 100 plus extra credit every class. Overall great professor!
Tests are weighted so heavy and are nothing like the tons of homework you get. No rounding in the end either i had a 76.99 that if rounded to a 77 would be a B and he refused to do it.
Professor Carmichael is an amazing lecturer who explains concepts clearly and thoroughly. There are 3 HWs a week with around 30 questions each, long but great practice. Exams are almost identical to the past exams he posts, so use them to study. Extra credit for attending class and answering a live question can add up to 2% to your final grade.
LOVE CARMICHAEL!! Make sure to actually use the past exams he provides and STUDY ON YOUR OWN TIME! Study these exams over the homeworks/quizzes because those aren't as accurate (learned that the hard way...). Make sure to make it to your discussions because that's the only attendance that's actually mandatory :)
Professor Carmichael did a great job lecturing and making the class feel personal even though it was online. Although the class can be difficult at times he explains topics well and has an easy to follow system for homework, quizzes, tests, and extra credit. I would easily recommend taking his course.
