This guy is really funny, nice, and fair. He is really concerned first and foremost with his student's understanding of the material. :)
one of the best professors i ever had..
I loved this class. He is a great professor who makes the class interesting and fun at the same time. He is always willing to help a student and is understanding of any problem a student might have. I would love to take another class with him.
nice, fair, and understanding professor. He hands out review sheets before exams which is very helpful-although material may not be very easy as people may think, he explains things in a very simple way and helps students pull their grades up by giving fun assignments&XtraCredit. An asset to UMB :)

So far, Professor Clarkin is the best professor in the university. I have been at Umass Boston for 5 years and is a graduating senior. Never have I had such an overall wonderful experience in school.
COOL!
One of the best teachers I've had. Very nice, very helpful, and clear explanations of the material.
great professor and extremely helpful!
the class was really amazing. and he kept it very interesting.
What a nice guy.
Great teacher-patrick is awesome, i recommend him to all :)
This class was the best that I have had and it is a shame that it isn't a regular class in the program. He is a wonderful professor and just an all-around good guy. He's dedicated to his students and works just as hard as us to make sure that we learn what is important. Two thumbs up!!
Possible the best teacher I have ever had. He blends education with interest well. I learned the material in his class did well but didn't mind being there at the same time. He is a very down to earth person who realizes that his class is not the most important thing in the world. he also knows that there is some material that isn't the most exciti
FANTASTIC CLASS AND PROF. Get a requirement out of the way and challenge the way you think. Fun projects, straightforward exams. Easy going. Great movies, interesting lectures. good text too. Everyone always went to class...everyday. Great sense of humor, great communication (esp. through email). Lectures online too
Great teacher. Found that I liked nutrition and growth by the end of the class.
Nerdy science guy meets interesting educator. Never thought I'd have any interest in biology before this class, but Clarkin's approach to teaching is so laid-back it didn't even feel like learning as much as reading a really good book. Tests and assignments both challenging and interesting. Highly recommended!
Really enjoyed his teaching style, he new the information, and made me want to know more!
i loved this class. clarkin was entertaining and made, what could have been boring stuff, very interesting. i think i'm going to minor in anthropology now ;)
GREAT PROF, funny, intelligent, really nice and helpful guy, the test/projects are difficult however
I highly recommend Prof. Clarkin, he made the subject very interesting, had a great, laid back teaching style, and always made you laugh. I almost never missed a class because he made it worthwhile to attend every time! You'll definitely get a lot out of Anthro 105 besides checking off your Natural Sciences requirement =)
Incredible professor! Made the class interesting, and was very fair. I was more than impressed.
You'll adore him. Fantastic teacher and an interesting subject. He does subtract points for absences, but he often provides extra credit and always available for help, if you need it.
I took Human Variation in the Spring of 06 and I still think it's one of the best I've ever taken. Clarkin is an incredible professor and a great guy. One day it was so nice out we decided to take a walk around the harbor and have our discussion outside! He really knows his stuff and wants his students to learn also. Take this class!
Had Pat for two classes. Got me to stick with Anthropology and doing Hmong research. Because of what he taugh me I am now finning my undgrad at one of the top schools in the US for bio-anth. Pat got my first publication.Wish Pat was at my new school. Able to take grad bio-anth becuase of what he taught me. Great man miss him alot. Best pressor.
incredible...learned alot from him. he loves the stuff he teaches, along with his very laid-back attitude, its a pleasure listening to his lectures. many students enjoy going to his class as much as i do...
Fantastic professor. Very knowledgeable about his subject, clearly interested in helping students. Definitely suggest him to anyone who wants to know what anthropology is about-- he's well-rounded and willing to give you whatever information you want to know. I recommend him more than any other professor I've had at UMass Boston.
very hard exams. great in-class discussion and lectures. professor nice but seemed overly concerned with fitting in with students.
Lots of powerpoint notes. His tests were hard, but he did give out a very good review sheet. He tries to explain everything clearly and is really good about listening to people questions and opinions. Great class, one of my favorite at UMass. You learn a lot, but you have to show up and take your time learning
His tests are hard, but if you take good notes and keep up with the reading you should do ok. He's a really great professor, one of the best at Umass. He makes things really interesting. I hear nothing but great things about him. If you take a class with him you see why.
Excellent professor... the exams and assignments are tough, but the class is both interesting and entertaining.
Just one word...AMAZING!!!
He is an awesome teacher. Exams and quizes are not difficult if you come to class and takes notes. He also passes out review sheets which are very helpful. Exams and quizzes hold no suprises. The class may be a little boring at times but overall youll gain interesting information. I reccomend him for any class.
one of my favorite teacher. he is awesome!!!! A must take prof you will learn a lot.
one of the best, most caring and organized professors! wants you to succeed!
Honestly a great professor. Probably one of my favorite. He takes difficult material and makes fun and easy to learn, especially if its an early morning class. He has a great sense of humor and he is just an all around good guy. I want to take another class with him again. Try an anthropology class with him you won't regret it.
Great teacher overall. He does very well at keeping the interest of the class during his lectures. The tests aren't bad at all if you just study and do the readings (I found the book readings weren't really that necessary) he assigns on blackboard. Otherwise you are going to be assed out big time. He gives study guides which make things much easier
my all time favorite professor, not going to be and easy A unless you work hard for it. great sense of humor and made class fun and interesting as possible. im taking him for the second time and wish he could teach all of my classes <3 :)
The best professor at UMASS that I have had!!! He is inspiring and makes everything fun and interesting. You will learn so much in his class!
Patrick is amazing! He is funny, intelligent, easy going, uses powerpoints and posts them online after for reference. Exams are minimal and he is more than accessible for help during the semester! I have taken mannnyyy classes with him!
Probably the best professor I have ever had. If you have an opportunity to take ANY class with him, do. You learn a lot, not only factual information, but new ways of thinking about the world. He blends facts, research, history, humor, morality, and feelings together seamlessly. He has a gift for teaching.
Probably the best professor I have had at UMB. He takes difficult material and makes it fun! He's an overall good guy, with a great sense of humor!! Not much homework, and tests are manageable. Great class, great teacher.
Easily the best prof I've evr had: smart, organized, caring, and cute.
He is really passionate about what he does and wants everyone to learn the info. Doesn't trick students and is excited about teaching it. He can be a bit arrogant (though if I was a PhD I would be too) but otherwise, I'd take a class he taught again in a heartbeat.
Best professor i've had at UMB. All of his tests are taken from the lecture material. He is extremely intelligent with a great sense of humor. Makes learning fun and interesting. Take this professor!
Incredibly Awesome professor. Always available for help. Nice, funny, and interactive. He is super passionate about the material and wants to make sure you do too. I hated the material, took the class to fill a requirement, and he actually made it interesting and capable for someone who wasn't an ANTH major. Would definitely recommend Clarkin!
Loved his class. Has a great sense of humor, and jokes around a LOT during class. His tests, however, are no joke. STUDY. You have to keep up with the articles he assigns to read, he will not mention them during class. Very important for the exams. No papers, a couple of "labs." overall, I recommend him.
Prof Clarkin is truly passionate about Anthro. I enjoyed his class but attendance is mandatory. It counts as part of your grade and his tests are HARD. I got an A in his class but I worked hard to get it. Otherwise, his class is enjoyable.
He's hilarious and makes the class fun. If you study the notes he gives you, you'll do fine.
Professor Clarkin is a good professor who is obviously very passionate about the work he does. The class is mostly lecture aside from a few labs. 3 exams total. Great class, learned a lot about human evolution and would consider taking more of his classes in the future.
I had absolutely no interest in anthropology before I took this class. I learned and lot and enjoyed every bit of it. Clarkin is really funny and makes the topics interesting. Anyone looking for a Natural Science class should try to take this with him. Only complaint is that most of the grade is based on exams and I am not a great test taker.
Genuinely loves his subject matter and teaching in general. If you show up and pay attention you should have no problem, and will learn a lot in the process!
AMAZING professor! So passionate as well as knowledgeable about anthropology. If this is a subject you're interested in, definitely take his class!
Yea he's a ridiculously nice guy. Yea his class is easy. It's an easy "A." Totally. Take my word. However, I'm in the College of Liberal Arts and it's disappointing that out of all my classes you would think that this class is objective. Well, it's not. He can get pretty subjective and ideological. Which is bothersome for me at least.
Lectures were very interesting and hold your attention! Clarkin is very nice but I was afraid to ask questions because he tends to make jokes as responses to questions sometimes. A little difficult but if you study you should do well. No textbook, he provides readings. I would recommend this class!
Although I wasn't into the class subject at first, Clarkin made me really fall in love with bio anthro. He's funny, and his lectures are interesting. He is a fair grader too. Also, he posts really cool staff on the class website, which makes the subject much more enjoyable!
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS AT UMB. hes soo funny, lectures are super interesting. I love going to his class. He gives a lot of extra credit. attendance matters. 2 test, 3 quiz ( 5 questions), no papers :D ! some labs but there really easy . and there is no require textbook
The professor is wonderful and he is very funny. More importantly, his test review is very helpful, you will definitely get a high grade if you go over his test review. one of the best professor I have ever met. Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!
Clarkin is a great guy. He is smart and he makes the class interesting, easy to learn, inspirational, and funny! Take him if you get the chance!
Professor Clarkin is probably the nicest professor I have ever had. He is very engaging and truly wants his students to be interested in the material. He is also extremely approachable and understanding when things come up, and he is personable and funny - something my class very much appreciated, as it was an 8am class. Definitely take his class!
He was great, smooth sailing semester. Does a good job incorporating personal information, and real life topics into his lectures while being funny.
Excellent professor. H'es prepared every day and shares interesting information from anthropology and other fields. He's not too bad to look at either.
This is my second semester I just completed with professor Clarkin. He's honestly so nice. If you're trying to avoid taking biology and chemistry for your Natural science requirement, take anthropology with him! He teaches with clarity. Small assignments. One research paper as your final. One exam. Two books. (No need for them) &One group project.
Good guy. He cares about students.
Awsomw teacher. Super nice and respectful. His lectures are not so boring and really interesting. He gave so many extra credit opportunities. He posts his lectures on BB at the end of the week. Easy class.
Such an amazing professor. He makes the class enjoyable to cracking some jokes and makes anthropology interesting. He posts the readings online, so you don't need to buy a book. He's really awesome and the nicest professor I've had yet, I'd definitely retake his class.
he uses an app called tophat. there r 2 tests, 2 labs, 1 hw and 1 group lab. there is a lot of material to learn. tests are multiple choice and an essay. he gives the essay question and the answer but there is a lot to memorize. good professor.
Highly respected. Took him for ant 316. Amazing professor, loves his job, loves his students - highly recommended him.
This is the best class! Take it if you can. There are 3 tests, 3 half-exams (quiz), and participation (on blackboard). There is a lot of material to memorize, but it is manageable. Attendance is mandatory (you can only miss two classes). There are a lot of extra credit opportunities. Great class!
For an anthropologist he sure does geek out over dinosaurs. I never thought Id survive the class as biology isnt my strongest area. This was a great way to view biology from the anthropological lens. Professor Clarkin is a funny guy, kindhearted, and will help you remember that the Pleistocene comes before Holocene and were all cousins.
He gives great lectures, and avoids assigning textbooks, but he might have you subscribe to something for class. Still, it's cheaper than a textbook. He's very well-meaning and a great professor in general, and he wants you to learn from his class. Easy A if you pay attention
Easily, hands down, the BEST professor I have had during my 4 years at UMB. He genuinely cares about the success of his students, and is super passionate about anthropology. His lectures were very clear, his tests were very straight forward, and the life lessons he taught were very valuable! Nice guy, great professor, 10/10 would recommend!
Professor puts more than 100% effort into his lectures and making sure that the information is always up to date. He's willing to work with students and understands the pressures of the university. You'll learn a lot from the students too it's a very eye-opening class.
He cares a lot about his students. He gives mad extra credit. And he's a pretty cool dude.
Perhaps the best professor I've ever taken. He's passionate about the topic but makes all of the presented research easily understood and relatable. I've never had a professor prepare more for each class than him. He really puts the work in to make the class enjoyable. There wasn't a single day I didn't look forward to this class. Take his class
Great prof. He's a caring person and makes the lectures interesting and easily digestible. Quizzes and tests are relatively simple.
PC is a real gem to this university and the anthro department. This is my first and last course with him. Come to class, as you'll learn something from the lectures. Grade is based on attendance, two quizzes (half-exams), two exams, or one exam or a paper if you so choose to do the paper over the second exam (the non-cumulative final exam).
Clarkin is by far one of the best professors I've had in my college career. He's very clear on what he expects from Day 1 and makes the material extremely interesting! He shows passion for the topics and has mutual respect for his students by caring for us beyond the classroom - which means more than anything during the pandemic. Take his class!
Professor Clarkin is hands down the best professor I have ever had. His passion for teaching and Anthropology is clear, he makes you want to learn. He is a fair grader and helps you out if you need it. Do yourself a favor and take his class.
Professor Clarkin is hands down the best professor I have ever had. The lectures are engaging and interesting, I wasn't to interested in Anthropology until I had the privilege of taking his class. He is a fair grader and actually cares about his students and their well being. Do yourself a favor and take his class!
Professor Clarkin is the best best Professor ever— TAKE HIS CLASS. It is test-heavy so be ready for that but he lets you write the essay portion. Also open book test for ANTH 105 this semester. He is clearly invested and takes joy in teaching and research and he will make you want to learn, even if you think you’re “bad” at science, etc.
He gave my 8AM class the option to go in person or remotely watch his lectures on your own time which was nice, the tests can be pretty difficult if you don't listen in class/ study but he is a super understanding kind professor that really wants everyone to do well. he also does not give too much work.
Professor Clarkin is hands down one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students which is why he made it an option to go to his 8AM class so we could watch the lectures online. He barely gives hw and makes the class funny and interesting. Take notes from the lectures and you'll be fine on the (open note) exams.
Professor Clarkin is an amazing professor. It is evident that he truly cares about his students and has great passion for anthropology. He keeps his lectures interesting and is very reasonable with assignments and exams. There are a couple of big assignments and a few exams which are open notes and available over the course of a few days on BB.
He was a great professor! def recommend this professor he is so nice and is aware that you have a life outside of class, he really cares about what he teaches and I learned a lot from his class. 10/10
He literally put himself in our shoe and know we as college student are stress. The lectures are not boring and exam is literally base off lecture notes. Stress free zone because no homework or assignments, just blackboard discussion. One of the prof that you will actually learn without stressing.
The best professor I've had so far! His lectures are awesome and will really make you retain information. He has great humor that really makes you pay attention. Exams, quizzes, etc. are very accurate with his lectures and are very easy. If I were you, I would not hesitate to take his class
Professor Clarkin has really entertaining lectures, even if you aren't too interested in the topic.
He is an outstanding professor and a wonderful human being who cares deeply about his students. The discussion posts and examinations accurately reflected what we learnt in the class as a whole. I recommend this class to true anth majors. He's a kind person who is always willing to help others at all times.
If you can take this professor please do. He is so worth it and please believe all the hype about him, he will not disappoint. He is so caring and very passionate about what he talks about. You can tell he knows his stuff yet he isn't arrogant either. He's a good example of what a good professor should be like at this school.
Dr. Clarkin is the best professor I have had at UMB. Cares about his students and Anthropology as a whole. Definitely take a course with Dr. Clarkin if you need an elective or gen ed filled, you won't be upset.
Awesome professor all around.
Patrick is one of the best professors I have met here at Umass. His lectures are amazing; even at 8am, he can keep your attention a whole class! The material for this class was easy and very interesting. The exams were open notes/ timed and he allowed us to take them online. Non mandatory attendance. Great class 10/10
professor Clarkin is one of the few professors ive met that actually cares about his classes and does anything he can do make sure we succeed. you can tell he's passionate and knows his stuff. even at 8am he kept class interesting and engaging, tests and homework were simple if you watch lectures/attend class. take his class if you can!!!!
Best professor anyone can ask for. It was 8 am class but he is very inspirational, really cares about the students and their succession. Made class interesting and is super knowledgeable and can execute the information well! Tests are fine as long as you take notes. Literally a 10/10 professor, definitely would take him again!
You will have a lot of opportunities to make up for your grade. Show up on-time, be respectful. He is a passionate professor and with his heart in the right place. As long as you communicate with him, he will be 100% understanding.
Just finished our final exam. It was a lot of info on the health effects of different wars. But it was fair, and he presents material in an engaging way so it's not too hard to remember. As others have said, he's kind and passionate about the material. He works really hard at making the subject interesting.
Very Easy A.
