Be prepared to teach yourself chemistry. Lots of homework. Always refers questions to the worked example in book.
You do not want this teacher for such an involved class. Had to teach myself everything and get a tutor. There is a quiz at the end of every class over the homework that you never learned.
The class is hard and the teaching style requires you to do your homework. If you actually do your homework and ask questions about what you don't understand, then you will do fine. It is frustrating at first because you are teaching yourself, but it is the only way to learn the material. Study the quizzes and you will do fine on the tests.
He is very helpful professor. The class itself is not easy and the method of the teaching, in which you have to teach yourself first, is honestly the best way to teach the material. Then, when he goes over it, its not like foreign to you. He values attendance( because there is a quiz every day) and doing your homework. Gives many review sesssions.
His class actually felt like a college level course. He grades fairly and I enjoyed the setup of how we learned subjects. His class isn't a "cake walk"- but if you truly take advantage of this learning experience then you'll truly come out with a solid work ethic that will make other classes seem like child's play!
Worst professor I've ever had. You will never learn anything from him, all you do is teach yourself and he does nothing but abstract junk that will not help you whatsoever.
Dr. Coppock is nice and respectable as a person, but not so much as a teacher. His teaching pedagogy requires you to study organic chemistry and his in-class board work and Q&A don't work very well. His quizzes and tests are unreasonably hard.
I honestly do not like this class. He is a respectable person and i love how he is talkative but sometimes he goes overboard. He will gladly help you but in teaching wise, might as well teach yourself. Test and quizzes are confusing but when it comes to the Labs, they are okay as well. i wouldn't recommend taking him if your just up for a challenge
OCHEM-Hardest class you will take. Dr C's a REALLY nice guy and humors about everything to ease things up. He encourages you to follow his detailed lesson plans(straightforward enough.) The only problem is that he gives you ALOT of independence in studying and HW. If you don't understand something, you might fall behind. Go find a dedicated tutor!!
Dr. C is a nice guy and cares about his students. I took his Saturday class and it involved a lot of self-teaching you have to be disciplined! Focus on examples because that's what he tested on. Reading(skimming) helps you understand especially if you plan to go farther in science courses. Work hard and study and get a tutor if you need the help!
The last time I took a chemistry class was in 2003. I took ochem during the summer session and was incredibly overwhelmed during the first few weeks. Dr. C is really nice, but also realistic about his expectations and difficulty of the course. He prefers independent learning, so i used crackochem and I got an A in the class.
Took for O-Chem. Hated his teaching method. He never really explained anything at all. Would not recommend, felt I could have learned so much more from a different professor.
This is the most useless teacher I've had in college. Organic chemistry is a difficult subject that you need to have a good teacher in, and Patrick Coppock is the exact opposite. Expects you to teach yourself and doesn't know enough of the material himself to help you.
Do not take this professor. He does not deserve your tuition money because he does not teach or give fair grades. I am good at chemistry and struggled to pass.
Dr. Coppock is a terrible professor. The worst professor I have ever had. He expects you to teach your self the information before class, and then take a quiz over it. Unreasonable amounts of homework that he can't even keep up with grading. Very rude and harsh. He can tell good stories though. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GPA AND chemEDUCATION
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! He's mean,He's a bad teacher and is a liar! He tells you one thing and then changes it he's a jerk and doesn't care if you understand half of are class failed and he was happy! He just continuously tells you to look up videos and he grades bad if you find an easier way to do a problem he marks it wrong and says that's luck
This professor is extremely hard and very confusing. You pretty much have to self-teach the material. When it comes to the tests the questions are on a higher level than the class you are taking. He could be very rude and discouraging. No study guides, quizzes over material "taught" that night, overly hard tests. Don't take his class.
OCHEM is a DIFFICULT class. Dr. Coppock is a great teacher. If you attend class and do the homework, you will do well on the quizzes. The only two exams were the midterm and ACS. Dr. Coppock does not give extra credit, but he does give you plenty of quizzes to cushion your grade. He also gives you hints about what will be on the quiz.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS Dr. Coppock is the worst teacher I have ever had He is a shrewd, sad, confused little man who will do all he can to be a road block in the path of your success, we started with a section of 24 students ended with 5 (including myself) and i believe on 2 ppl passed, numbers don't lie. A very strange awkward insecure man.
Great teacher, he's very open about how intense this course can be, and he gives great clues on how to pass the classes. Homework is optional, not graded, however if you don't do it, you'll be completely lost in class. He tends to talk a lot so if you need board work don't be afraid to ask about it. Overall amazing!!!! Recommended across the board!
awesome teacher, just pay attention. does have tendency to go off topic. otherwise easy class
Dr. Coppock is one of the wisest professors I've taken thus far. He can explain things in a multitude of ways so that anyone can understand what he is teaching. If you don't get his humor, don't take it personal. I passed his class the first time I took it and will take him again.
I would not take him if you dont like reverse classroom. That is the class you teching yourselfthe class. Yes, you go to the board and teach. I don't like it at all. I have to work 5x hard for something that if he would just go over it would be so hard. He really doesn't lecture at all so be preapred. He doesnt curve either. Only 7 pple are left
Dr. Coppock is a great teacher! He can explain things in several ways when you do not understand something. If you are looking for study sessions, just let him know and he will figure out a time. His tests have a lot of information on them but let's be honest, this is Organic Chemistry so you definitely need to put some studying in.
Dr. Coppock is a great teacher. My advice for anyone taking his class is to make sure that you know ALL reactions (have your index cards handy) and practice spectra. He is very blunt at times, but such is life. I basically was failing the beginning of the semester, but talked with him and found out I was studying all wrong for the test.
Dr. Coppock is one of the best organic chemistry professor at GGC. We have to come to this subject not just relying on the professor to teach but also expect to do the homework. Its going to be a challenge. However if you study + do the homework, I can't imagine anyone not passing his class with a decent grade. He's fair on his test( no surprises).
The key to passing this class is to study your reactions and mechanisms constantly! His test are heavily geared toward the mechanism and synthesis; so if you know rxns then your good. Make sure you know the lesson objectives from the hw since those will be on the exam. Lastly, for bonus points on the exam, know how to do spectra. You will pass!
Dr. Coppock really cares about how his students are doing. He is understanding and will work with you to help you if you need it. However, he can be very sarcastic. If you don't handle that kind of humor well, then don't take him. He posts videos on Youtube for any questions you ask him and for each of the lessons. I would take him again.
Doctor Coppock is by far one of the funniest and intelligent professors that has ever graced the halls of GGC. HE is always there for his students and for anyone else that is willing to approach him. He can figure out a way to explain information for you, if you are having trouble, in multiple ways to include starting with th basic fundamentals.
Chem Is not my strong suit but Doc Coppock does make it easy to learn. Funny guy, forgiving in lateness and really breaks down and explains in depth when asked. Would recommend him if you ask. One thing I will say, you NEED to study his tests are pretty tough; well for me they were. Aside from that amazing.
Be prepared to teach yourself everything. There are not lectures, he simply answers questions on the hw he didn't teach you how to do. The test are 10x harder than the homework(which there is TONS of - its how you "learn"). He is kinda funny however he is super super awkward and confusing. Don't recommend him if you want a good grade in Chem1211.
Dr. Coppock assigned many homework assignments straight form the book. The exams were composed of the same questions. It is an easy class and attendance is not mandatory, if homework is completed. Highly recommend if you know what you are doing.
He is absolutely awful. All learning is done outside of class, he only answers questions you have from the "Learning" you did from the homework. The tests are very difficult. He has no interest in helping students succeed, he is only a roadblock to your success. Save your energy, tuition, and GPA. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
whoever over here complaining about him are the ones who never do their homework or even touching their books. Do the homework, if you don't get it, he will try his very best until you get it. Not asking question means you get it and he will move on. I was taking him CHEM1211K and CHEM1212K. Got A for both. He is amazing. Period.
He made jokes about death only a few weeks after my original professor passed away, proving that he has no tact. He was rude to people when they asked questions. Although the material was easy, he took forever to explain it and told long stories that had nothing to do with class. When you do 1 on 1 he doesn't tailor the material to what you need.
Dr. Coppock volunteered to take over our class after the previous professor died mid-semester. He then didn't grade anything on time, skipped required material, and mocked some students who were mourning. It is possible that he's better if you take his classes specifically, but his poor time management and uncaring nature made it a struggle.
it is very simple DO NOT TAKE HIM, he is not what he pretend. it was crazy and hard, exam and quiz questions were not even close to HM or board questions, do not waste your time and money
Honestly do NOT take this professional. He is the worst professional I have ever met in my life. He loves to fail students. He taught 2 classes over the summer and 3/20 students passed his morning class and everyone in my class failed, honestly everyone failed. He always lose students quizzes so youll have to keep up with your grades. HORRIBLE
The worst class I have ever taken honestly. The whole class is online and you get very little help in the classroom. Lectures are very short and far and few in between. Although the whole course is online, attendance still plays in your grade. He is a cool guy but also very awkward. In summary, if you can teach yourself then this class is for you.
Just ask for help if you need it. Nothing is the class is mandatory but you have extra credit for almost everything. Try to be ahead of the the deadlines which you make the class easier.
Basically he does not teach you hes rather sit you in front of a website called Aleks and have a computer teacher you. While he sits in the back and plays Mozart.
He writes his own positive submissions on rate my professor, he even admitted it in class. Just look at the positive ratings, they're clearly not from a student. If you care about your GPA, avoid him!!!
Worst professor I've ever had period. You teach yourself with the frequent graded homework. Idk why teaching yourself chem seemed like a good idea to these people but its not. class is entirely online but you still have to go to class or you wont be able to take the online quizzes. Every class period is either a quiz or a graded knowledge check
No clue why his reviews are bad but I loved him. His humor is a little strange but he was a good teacher. He is also affiliated with Kaplan MCAT. 1st half would be lecture and then work on the boards. The quizzes really helped with enforcing the mechanisms and reagents. Obvi, study and practice. Never made <90% on the exams because of bonus points.
He used ALEX and it was highly annoying but u could get an okay grade in the end.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. USES ALEKS. THE LABS ARE COMPLICATED. BEWARE.
Dr. Coppock is an interesting person.. But he definitely cares about his students when he sees the effort. I tried to stay ahead of the topics on ALEKS which is why I did so well. Even if you're ahead, he'll work problems for you in class. Gives bits of EC but also deducts for leaving class early, etc. I really enjoyed his class.
If you do the homework (and there is plenty of it) you will do great. If you don't, you won't. That simple. Ask questions, show up, do the homework. Labs are very easy as was the lab final. I'm guessing the negative reviews are from students that didn't show up and didn't do the homework. Not sure how one expects good grades without effort.
Prof. Coppock is nice and tries his best to get students to understand the material. He uses ALEKS the whole time, so get ready for that. He's very flexible as well. But, he's also SUPER extra with everything. Be sure to do ALL of the homework and labs and you will definitely exceed the class. Overall, pretty cool professor.
He uses Aleks for all of the work. If you do the homework ahead of time you don't have to come to class, and you can leave if you finish it. The tests and quizzes are the same problems as the homework. Just make sure your going back and doing the topics you "lost" after a test, otherwise you might not have time at the end.
Have you ever heard those stories about terrible professors? If you want to avoid having one of those stories in your college experience then STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY. He treats everyone like high school students. He hardly ever answers questions about the course material with a straight answer. He didn't seem to have adequate knowledge in class.
Dr. Coppock is a nice person, easily accessible. He cares about his students: wants them to succeed, offers opportunities to talk about your progress in the class and to give extra help. He uses ALEKS for homework, tests, and learning the material. If you don't do well with teaching yourself, take a different professor. Gives lots of extra credit.
He gives so much homework even that just the first week of class. He did not teach anything. Learn by yourself most of the time.
Very good teacher, uses aleks extensively but aleks was a very helpful system so I don't blame him. Course is easy if you put in the recommended time and effort. Basically willing to help with anything at any time so if you're behind use that resource.
He's a good professor, but he assigns homework like this is the only class you're taking. Teaches well, but can often go on tangents. Again, assigns a lot of homework, roughly an hour a day. It's an easy A if you put in the work, but requires too much effort from his students. Wouldn't recommend.
Had him for orgo 1 and it was the hardest class Ive had (until orgo 2, which is even harder) but I passed it the first time through. Chemistry is hard so if you dont put in the time then forget it, you wont pass, and dont blame it on your professor. Show up, listen to him, do the homework, put in the time and effort and you will get through.
Dr. Coppock means well but he is awful at explaining things. He uses.. ALEKS & it is so bad and I do poorly on them. No lecture, instead he uploads YouTube videos and your class is spent talking about homework. Not. Good. Also, he gives no study guides for final exam which is so tough. Why the heck is the final 25% anyways.
Dr. Coppock really wants you to succeed. If you ask, he will help you with all aspects of the class. There is no reason for you not to do well because he is so helpful. Just write down all notes and you will get an A or B.
Just take him. One of the best professors in the chem department. If you don't do well, you didn't ask for help. No reason not to get a good grade.
get ready to do Aleks work. you do Aleks work and he will answer any question going through problems on the board. you do have to ask for problems usually. He is a nice person who definitely cares about you as a person, not just a number.
Had him for both 1211K & 1212K online. He'll teach you what you actually need to know. We used ALEKS, which was one of the best learning tools I've ever used. Get ahead of the work and don't let yourself fall behind. Ask for help and he will help you.
Great professor. He uses ALEKS for EVERYTHING. Lab's are easy A's but he doesn't give any study guides for any test (so make sure you remember important information on labs for the lab practical). He's terrible at grading things on time. I still haven't seen my overall grade. He cares about his students though
His class was all ALEKS, but assignments are easy. Professor provides videos on how to work out problems and gave quizzes for extra credit. If you get a 100 on the ALEKS assignments and do well in labs, you can bomb finals and still have an A in the course (talking from experience). There are bonus point allotted if you do ALEKS before due dates.
2 words: Stay away! He does not explain things well. If you want to protect your GPA avoid this guy!
I took Coppock for organic chemistry 2 over the summer and I thought it was great! It was always helpful and really cared about every single student. The class was hard but this is expected. Read the book and do the homework.
If you know what is best for you, do not take his class. It will be the worst mistake you could make. Majority of his assignments are Aleks assignments. He talks a lot and most times it does not make sense. He is very sarcastic and rude. He takes a long time to input accurate grades, if ever.
Doctor Coppock cares more about his student's success than any other professor I have ever had. He is very understanding and kind. He gives lots of extra credit, and you will succeed if you care about the subject. He would have a perfect rating on here if he taught an easier subject, but people blame him when they find chemistry hard.
He tends to be quite talkative and I find it hard to follow what he's saying in class. I feel like some of the things he talks about might not be essential and could be a bit of a waste of time. Most of the homework assignments are based on Aleks which was very tedious. I would not take him again.
Do NOT take his class. He is very rude, inconsiderate, and inconsistent. Out of all my college professors he has by far been the worst. He will not treat every student the same, comparing emails from him with my peers you can tell he is bias with some student. BE AWARE.
Great professor. Takes job seriously. Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Be sure to follow all instructions and you can pass the class easily. There will be a lot of homework on ALEKS but it's condensed so you only do what is necessary for the course. Overall a great class. Uses attendance as part of grades.
THIS CLASS WAS FOR PHYSICS 1101K!! He was very honest with us on day 1. I'm fairly certain that we learned more things about chemistry than physics but he was an excellent person. He practically gives extra credit away just for showing up on time to class. only 3 tests and all work was done in class so no HW. def recommend for physics.
TOOK FOR PHYSICS 1101K! There are so many good and bad things about Dr Coppock. He is the most caring professor I've ever had. but he gets off-topic so easily. The lectures are good. The tests are relatively easy. He also gives out extra credit for just showing up on time. Highly recommend of you aren't a type-A student.
He was great. There is a lot of work but as long as you stay on top of your work you're going to be fine. The exams were fairly easy. Final exam was also okay. He wants you to succeed. He does joke around a lot and sometimes it's a little mean but he doesn't mean to be mean.
I was transient and I took this course and This class was easy as heck, I did pretty good on my initial knowledge check, so I had less work then others. Labs were graded mostly on completion. I took most of the exams early and never scored below a 92, It was easy, BTW he uses ALEKS alot, I hate aleks too. Easy A for me.
His class was a very easy A because it's 100% structured through ALEKS and he gives a lot of extra credit/slack. It's a lot of work, and I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who struggles with teaching themselves. He's a very interesting character, but he's entertaining and he does really care about his students.
Dr. Coppock very clearly cares about the success of his students. He is very clear and concise in his lectures and uses the ALEKS software for most of the class. This is a smart software that adjusts your workload based on your performance. Resist the temptation to Google the answers and do the work.
I don't know why Professor Coppock has a mid rating, he's a really easy grader, lets you take exams a second time if you don't like your grade with no penalty. The only downside I can think of is there is a lot of homework. All the hw, exams and final are done on ALEKS. All you have to do is show up and do the work and this class is super easy.
Do not take this professor if you care about anything in your life. This man is very nice and kind but he is no professor by any means. He will not care to teach you about chemistry and wants you to teach yourself Chemistry as he brags about having 7 kids and his wife during lectures. if one asked me wat I have learned from him. My answer is nothin
I personally didn't like Dr. Coppock. He is very nice and kind professor but when it comes to teaching I DO NOT recommend him.
Mr. Coppock was an amazing professor! I took him for CHEM 1152K and I loved him so much. He was funny and always saw that chem was hard and made it easier for us to understand.I would definitely take him again!!
Just don't.
Best option for ochem by far. 10/10 teacher. Ppl will complain about how talkative he can be but it makes the classes better because he wants to be personal and approachable. He is genuinely such a fun professor who lets his faith show. Just get to know him it is great for networking and I plan to stay in contact with him in the future.
The whole class is on ALEKS, but it's actually super helpful—it explains everything with examples. Professor Coppock gets really excited when students ask questions and explains concepts clearly. Exams (also on ALEKS) are fair, and he gives partial credit. Best to learn before lecture and come with questions. It is a lot of material but not bad.
This guy genuinely made me think about dropping out entirely and working at McDonalds for the rest of my life. That life sounds better to me than taking his class or having HIM as a professor again. If he was my last resort I would still choose to fail or change majors entirely.
He's a nice person , your grade reflects how hard you work in the class since everything is on ALEKS, it's self paced almost. Ask questions! He does over explain which sounds like he might be off track but just listen and take what you need .Only downfall is not keeping up with the hw, stay on top of it. Lab is not hard pretty straightforward.
If you end up taking chemistry with Professor Patrick Coppock, just be prepared for a very self-directed class. Most of the actual learning happens on ALEKS, so don't expect much traditional lecturing you'll need to teach yourself most of the material. Good Luck
Save yourself the trouble and take another professor if possible. Dr. Coppock does not teach you anything, the class is self taught and all your homework and exams are done on ALEKS. Attendance is required even though all you do is enter class and work on ALEKS. You have to teach yourself in the lab as well he barely offers help.
save your self the trouble and don't take this guy, everything is on ALEKS you have to teach yourself fully and he barely explains anything in lab. And there is no partial credit for exam even if you are off by .5 the whole thing is still wrong. Just pick a different professor that will actually teach you. He expects too much but teaches nothing
Coppock is a very hit or miss professor. I loved him and am taking him again for chem 2, but I can't guarantee that everyone else will. He uses a program called aleks to do a lot for him, including essentially teaching you the new topics, but he will happily answer any questions you have about them. He is also very helpful in lab when you ask.
