i think his class was hard because i think the subject is really confusing. All the homework was out of the book and we had homework due at least once a week. I went to his office hours a bunch of times because i was really confused and he kind of helped me but enough where i was getting B's on the tests. He was a pretty decient teacher I think.
This class was very interesting! I learned A LOT and got an A as well. If you go to every class you will get an A because he explains everything better than a book does. If you have to take this class..take him!
Dieveney is seriously an amazing professor. Metaphysics should absolutely not be taken from any other professor. Go to class, take the excellent notes that he puts on the board, and you will do fine. considering the complexity of the course, you may need to visit his office hours, but he knows the material so well that he will quickly make it clear
He's okay. Class was boring and he just pretty much talks and writes on the board for the whole lecture time. Tests are pretty hard but if you study, it should be somewhat okay. I don't recommend him for anyone who wants to have fun learning in class.
This teacher makes class so boring! Do not take him unless you are prepared to read every night. The material that is assigned is so boring. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to take naps because he WILL put you to SLEEP!!
listen to what he is talking about and participate in the discussions and you will do fine in this class. read the articles each week, study from the slides and you will get an A!
This is by far the WORST class I have ever taken. Do NOT take him ever. He is unclear, rude, and uninterested. Went to office hours and did not help one bit. Critiques every answer you put on the final so you can never get full credit. Stay away from him!
He is a good lecturer and his class is very interesting and I learned a lot. His tests, however, are REALLY hard. 1st midterm okay 2nd midterm and final both very very hard. I recommend seeing him in his office hours, he's very helpful.
Dieveney is a dull, dry sleeping pill as a professor. He was SO boring! I thought metaphysics would be interesting, but he killed it with all his math talk. His BA is in mathematics! If that is your thing, great, but it is not interesting to the rest of us. He really critiques your papers and makes it hard to know what he wants to see. Avoid him!
Good class. Lectures were good, and wxams are easy if you do to the review session. Recommended.
Class was SO BORING! Made me hate philosophy. Lectures are long and ridiculous. I never knew what he was talking about. Books were very hard to understand. Term paper was a nightmare to do (would've gotten an A if it weren't for this). In order to pass the tests, try to find all the info outlined & memorize everything. That's what I did & got a B.
I'm still taking this class and I think I'm gonna get an A. He may seem hard at first and you may think there's no way to pass this class. But just do the readings prior to class and you'll be fine. Tests are very straightforward, they're straight from lectures and powerpoints. I aced the first midterm.
I wouldn't recommend his class. He talks in a monotone voice and goes through his slides too quickly. His grading process is basically 2 essays on documentaries you have to watch & the midterm and final. So if you mess up on any of those you're finished in that class. Hard to pay attention and a lot of people have fallen asleep!
Class was good. Exams were easy if you attended class!
This guy is more of a Mathematician than a Philosopher. He tends to go way too fast and complicated with the derivations on the board. Plus there's these paragraph long definitions that don't make sense that you need to know verbatim for the Exams. I'm retaking the course with Professor Wayne Wright, and he's way much better than Dieveney!
DO NOT TAKE CLASS!
I enjoyed this course. If you show up to class, the exams are pretty easy.
really boring
I stopped going to this class after taking 2 exams. There is really no need to attend class since he posts up all the notes online a week before an exam. you dont even need to read to get an A on a test. just read the notes and you'll be fine.
The professor was very helpful when I went to his office hours. Class was pretty easy, but I thought it was good.
Learned a lot.
This class is hit or miss meaning that some people get it right away and some don't.Some people have to take this class 3 times, some get an A the first time. He is very clear in his explanations and is always available to help at office hours. Doing the homework will save your grade if you mess up 1 exam!! Go to office hours!!
He is an odd professor to explain. He is cool because he knows what he is talking about, always wants to her opinions on readings (even if your wrong, but people usually do not want to), review days are extremely helpful, and curves tests. Then again, his lectures are what bring everything down. One word: BORING!
I learned a lot from this class and found it very interesting. He definitely knows what he's talking about, and if you pay attention to his lectures and review your notes, you're sure to pass. One more thing: green shirt.
The class is just pure lecture/read and take the exam. Reading the books and articles he gives is recommended if you want to know what he's talking about in lectures. Review the slides he gives you before taking the exam and you'll pass. The class is curved too. The exams are straight from his slides so they're straight forward. Just read/memorize.
His lectures are boring, but he is not the worst professor. He moves through powerpoint slides very quickly, so just make sure to study the slides when he posts them up before the exams. He also curves the exams so it is not that hard to pass if you study.
Patrick class is boring all he do is lecture from power point and ppl fell asleep, 3 exams and 1 report essay giv out 2 extra credit quizez, read the slides and study for the exams and u will pass, its not EASY at all dont get caught by other reviews
the man is a genius and granted, knows his stuff. coming into metaphysics w/o a commitment to THINKING will get you nowhere. he is helpful, funny, and passionate about his field. have to work hard, but i'd expect nothing less from one of the brightest minds at CSULB. thumbs up. weekly reading (< 50 pages), 2 short answer tests, one paper. very fair
The class is a complete bore- not gonna lie. To keep myself awake, I'd doodle or ask questions...other than that, it's an okay class. The professor knows what he's talking about and as long as you go to class and aren't a complete idiot, you should do okay on the tests.
A very exciting and challenging course!
Hard class but really helpful teacher. It's one of those subjects where it's hard to grasp at first, but once you get it, something clicks and you just get it. Go to him for help during office hours. He's very bright and is very passionate about his subject. :)
Kind of a challenging class, and really boring. Dieveney is nice enough, but he zooms right through lectures and if you miss anything you're basically lost for good because he's not much help.
Call me crazy, but I found this class fascinating. It took me a good month to finally click and understand what he was talking about, but once I did, I loved his class. He speaks quickly and eloquently, and sometimes thats hard to understand, so you really have to listen. Hes really willing to help you, utilize his office hours if you're struggling
i took him last sem. really cool guy i think. hes super smart. i actually liked the class. wasnt too hard in my opinion. writes kinda fast though so keep up. i didnt think he was boring either. and again, the class WAS NOT HARD. it wasnt easy either but i dont get why he has such a low rating for easiness.
I feel like you'll be able to teach yourself this class if you read the book. He writes really fast and talks pretty fast so if you don't follow along well enough you'll get lost. I suggest either pre-reading before the lecture of studying right after the lecture and not learning a whole chapter at once before a test. Ask questions! He's great :)
He is brilliant and can answer any question a student has in a clear manner. But what I want to know is: where are all his (deserved) chili peppers?
He is a good teacher who always explains the section so everyone can get it. Philosophy is a difficult subject, so while this class may not be a breeze, if you study and take advantage of office hours and actually attend class (very important) than you will do fine.
Great teacher. not an easy subject, but as long as you pay attention in class and keep up with his lectures(writes pretty fast)you will do fine. MAKE SURE to always bring the textbook to class, and the right version too. It will help keep you on track with his lectures. has quizzes and exams that altenate between the two. Final is not cumulative.
Very helpful teacher, often hard to understand due to mumbling at the end of his sentences. I barely went to class and was able to learn everything from the book!
Bring the book to class everyday! Does not assign a lot of homework, but does go over them in class to make sure you understand the material. Can be funny at times. Probably the best teacher for this class, but the easiness of this class WILL vary for each person. If you can understand the concepts, you will get a good grade.
Class can be boring if not interested in this subject. Teacher is very sarcastic and not very helpful. Lectures are long, take good notes and rely on book. Only 2 tests and a final but its not cumulative. The first test is the hardest. Suggest you study with a group. The material is very dense. If you can, avoid this class.
His voice is very monotone but interacts with the class pretty well. Gives out weekly homework and quizzes here and there. His tests are hard. I got a C and I studied a lot. Also, be prepared for a lot of note-taking. They're very helpful, though.
Concepts can be hard to grasp. Recommend lots of studying prior to exams and you'll do fine. I got a C the first exam, a B the second and an A on the last. His voice is very monotonous and you may fall asleep in class. I did, but as long as you do the homework, study, and work hard, you'll do fine.
He is extremely monotone, but knows what he is talking about. Make sure you understand the concepts! Assigns little homework and goes over it in class. Multiple choice quizzes and exams that are easy if you understand the concepts. The exams are just like the homework.
The material is boring and a rather difficult read. The lectures can be rather hard to follow. monotonous.
MONOTONE! Avoid taking this class. Hard to stay focused.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. Lectures are BORING! Test are extremely difficult. His powerpoints are extremely fast aswell. Your better off just reading the book.
Lectures were clear and pretty easy to follow. In class examples were very helpful to prepare for the test. Homework problems also helped to study for the test. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend you go. Logic class, so if you are a logical thinker, then this class should not be too hard. He is a little on the boring side, but I liked him.
Very monotone, does not engage the class at all. Lectures are very fast and concepts can be very confusing. I recommend studying often and going to office hours as much as possible. Try to find another class or a different professor if you are taking this class for a GE.
This class wasn't that bad! As long as you do the homework and understand it, then you could pass the class with an A. There are 3 quizzes and 3 tests. He assigns homework problems once a week, which doesn't take long to do and will help prepare you for the quizzes and tests!
This class is pretty easy if you just keep up with the homework. It takes about 30 minutes if you don't have trouble (if so, I would recommend getting help because he is always open for office hours and encourages questions.) His voice is monotone and can be boring at times, but he is a very nice teacher and conveys the material well!
Easy assignments, but slightly hard exams. There's homework due almost every week. He gives a few quizzes throughout the semester. Overall easy class, but have to try hard for an A.
Likes to laugh at jokes that only he gets. Goes through material very quickly, so listen carefully. Don't expect too many tests. Homework is assigned and due each tuesday, so you have about a week to get it all done. He goes over it on thursdays to help you out.
He's a good professor; really wants you to understand the material and will help you if needed. Tough class because the material itself is just confusing and hard to grasp. If you're taking this class for a GE then take another one. Oh and use the bathroom before class!
Dieveney is a nice professor but his lectures were long and kind of confusing. Struggled the entire semester. Would not take again.
Favorite teacher at CSULB have had him 3 semesters in a row. Lectures are long but topics are interesting. He knows his material. Take notes in class and you'll easily pass.
Dieveney's a chill professor, but his lectures are a bit boring since they are based off the book, which is extremely dense. Grades are based off short papers every other week (lowest grade dropped) & open-note midterms/final. He tells you everything you need to know during lectures, but does not post anything online so attendance is mandatory.
This is an ok class. The lectures are very boring and he doesn't post them online therefore you need to attend class. There are a few papers that are pretty simple and the test are pretty heavy. This class takes dedication and a lot of studying to pass with an A. Overall this is an ok class. Good luck.
I took his online course during summer. He made it mandatory to participate in a chat room during business hours which defeated the point of schedule flexibility for online classes. He gives 2 quizzes per week and a total of 4 three page essays exams. He posts the exam on Thursday at noon and is due Friday at 8PM, if you work, don't take him, HARD!
Hard topic but he's very thorough.
Real easy teacher if you are actively listening to the lectures and doing the homework. Definitely before the quizzes review the homework because he takes questions nearly identical to the problems in your reading. Ask him questions after class because he will be more willing to explain thoroughly rather than rushing to get done with the lecture.
Took online class. There were chat sessions, but he let me do an alternative makeup assignment because of my work schedule. Good class, pretty easy. Just keep up with the readings.
Class wasn't that hard if you attend the lectures. I enjoyed the topics.
Great class. The professor used the board alot. It was nice not to have a class where the professor mostly is clicking through powerpoints.
Prof D is really great. Phil 270 is without a doubt is the most difficult course I have ever taken. He is willing to work with students in his office hours with homework or reviewing tests. He will be very honest with you. My general rule/advice for this class: YOU DO NOT KNOW THE MATERIAL AS WELL AS YOU THINK, STUDY. Would take again.
Very hard material! This class stresses me out so much, it gives me anxiety. I had to quit my job so I could have the time to do my homework for this class
You only use the textbook for homework since he lectures on everything. The material is easy, homework is for credit, and there are no projects. Lectures were pretty cut and dry. He only announces the homework assignments in class, so definitely attend or make friends to get the assignments. Easy class if you pay attention and do the homework!
Makes good use of time. Tough grader. Doesn't take time to get to know students names. He spends more time on the liberal philosophers and downplays conservative philosophers. He appeared to be a liberal in his outlook. This medical ethics class can confuse a student on what is morally acceptable, like the issues of abortion and euthanasia.
Great class. Made me rethink my views on some things. If you attend lectures, the exams are easy!
An okay professor. Tests are very difficult, you must study and do the study guides he provides. He does curve the tests quite a bit which is a plus. The first couple months of the course have the hardest topics, so don't give up right away. I would only take if you absolutely need this as a GE as the overall grade is mostly just based on the exams
He's the lazy and overdependent textbook type of teacher. Then tells you to pick one aspects (pieces) to criticize for short papers and will harshly grade them with confusing comments. It's professor's like these are the reason why this Dept. can neither get beyond being a Gen Ed buttress for other Majors, nor its meager track record of Alumni.
Easy class. I liked the topics
Took this class, needed the GE credit. I enjoyed the topics especially at the end. And the exams were pretty easy with the study guide.
This professor is incredibly hard to understand. He doesn't use a microphone in a large lecture class, and often mumbles...
Incredibly easy class if you're the self-sufficient type of student. His syllabus lays everything out very clearly, and it became apparent after the first exam that you don't need to show up for class to get an A. Just know when assignments are due, come for exam review, and do all the readings and type up test notes. Easy A, chill dude.
Though he does a good job summing up the book, he goes through the slides very quickly and is monotonous, making it hard to write notes and lectures seem kinda boring. I suggest reading a little by yourself(in case you don't wanna fall asleep in class). 3 midterms with exact study guides prior, allowed 1 page cheat sheet, and 1 writing assignment.
His 3 midterms(multiple choice) and made for the study guide he gives you. So do them and that is pretty much your exam. He lets you use 1 page as a cheat sheet on the exam.
An amazing professor who is actually interested in what hes teaching. He lets you use a page of notes on every test and the final is just a normal test instead of a cumulative exam from the whole semester. You dont really even need to go to every lecture to get a good grade
He doesn't expect you to be in class but you would honestly be missing out. Lectures are based of the readings. There is homework for each section but would take more than 30 min in doing it. I took this class a get and I felt a bit confused but reading the night before and then going to class the next day helps me understand the subject.
Ok, Patrick isn't bad but he isn't good either. If you're expecting to interact with classmates in this class, find another one. He doesn't put up a classlist so it's just you. Lectures, quizzes and journal Entries are posted beginning of the week and you have till sunday to finish them. Advice, take screenshots of videos. Final is not cumulative
Took this class last year. The material is confusing enough and when he further explains the content it's still not easy to understand. The test questions are worded weird so it's difficult to understand at times. He mumbles sometimes so it's hard to hear what he is saying. He just didn't properly explain things. The class was a few exams & a paper
Meh, this class was okay. I'm sure in person it probably would have been different but online it was all recorded lectures you do at your own pace, and then he had optional Q and A sessions once per week where you could ask him any questions that you had. I only joined one once haha. Take good notes on the recordings and you will be fine :)
Class was asynchronous. We had lecture videos to watch and homework to complete every week. Quizzes were given every other week. Just like the majority of the courses, we had 2 decent midterms and one final for the semester. Take notes while watching his lectures and you should do aight.
The grade you get in this class will be a reflection of exactly how much time you invested into it this course was asynchronous you are given the homework Mondays and have until Sunday night @ 9. this is a philosophy class and you are learning it alone so keep in mind that it can be difficult nonetheless teacher is accessible and does curve exams
I took his asynchronous course and it was honestly pretty straightforward. Lecture vids range from 15-40 mins but theyre super helpful for doing well. Weekly quizzes, except during midterm/finals weeks. All midterms and finals are written. You do have to stay on top of your stuff, but it is definitely a doable and interesting course.
There's a lot of reading, weekly lecture recordings, a quiz every week, and a discussion post. Not fun and can be hard to do when you're burned out. Really tough grader, mans came for my usage of commas on the first exam. Exams consists of two essays which are worth 25% of the grade. Not impossible to get As but you really need to know your stuff.
SPRING2022, A weekly quiz and journal entry (250-word discussion post) due every Sunday at 9 pm. The Lectures are helpful. There are 2 exams which each require an essay and have 45 multiple-choice questions. There's an extra credit opportunity during finals week. If you've missed a due date for an assignment, you can email him. Average.
Class was completely asynchronous. One weekly discussion post and one weekly quiz. Not gonna lie, the weekly quizzes and the written midterm/final were pretty hard. I would just say turn in all your work and as long as you put effort, you should recieve a passing grade!
The class is annoying because his lecture videos are monotonous. I ended up only copying the text from the PowerPoints just because I couldn't stand sitting through them. 1 weekly quiz and discussion post, but otherwise the class was fine. If it wasn't asynchronous, I probably would have looked for another professor. Also, he never updates grades.
Dieveney uses generous grading methods, including low grade cutoffs (i.e. you couldn't score lower than a 60% on a quiz) and allowing take-home retakes to get 75%. Also, you can boost your grade with HW. Basically, you will likely not fail if you put in an effort. That being said, the content is hard, and many people struggle. Go to every class.
There are weekly quizzes and discussion questions, which on their own aren't hard, however, Dieveney insists on writing questions designed to trick students with tricky wording or double negatives. Lower-division professors need to get off their high horse and just teach a good class instead of trying to make their students second-guess everything.
For being an online class, there was weekly lecture videos, journal entry (250 words min), and quizzes, with major exams on midterm and finals. Overall, his workload is bearable, however, it felt like a lot at times. The weekly quizzes go off lectures but questions are wordy and confusing at times. Two essays (Final included) and is an easy grader.
If you think this guy is hard, you're lazy. His tests are open notes, he quite literally gives you the answers! Yes it's philosophy and you may have to work out your prefrontal cortex just a wee bit, but this is by no means a tricky professor. Brilliant, but not tricky. If you struggle in his courses, a trip back to primary school may be in order.
Canvas page is delightfully organized. I also really like how the exams/quizzes are done. Lectures are very easy to understand and I liked the journal prompts. The class is all about critical thinking, very interesting topics. No doubt I would definitely take again with Dieveney
Patrick is quite possibly the best professor in the philosophy department. He makes a difficult subject like metaphysics digestible without being one of those professors that just doles out As for likes. Really even keel guy that knows his stuff and is very approachable. Anyone passionate about the subject should take him.
This course wasn't too difficult. Only thing I didn't like was that grades weren't released after taking quizzes and such. Our final exam scores were not even shared. Just keep up with the workload and it'll be fine.
Taking his class is like being thrown into a metaphysical Kobayashi Maru, grappling with issues like the Ship of Theseus and whether or not lying to your nana about her casserole makes you a bad person. If Picard taught Phil it would feel like this: very fair but a bit tough. Dude is playing 4D chess while us plebs are still learning checkers.
Took his class online, and it was super easy. His lectures are easy to understand, and he provides good examples. There are weekly quizzes and discussions; just make sure to take notes on the video lectures posted. Missed the due date on one of the exams, and he let me retake only, knocking a few points off
His med ethics class was very organized. He makes it straightforward and easy. Some of his lectures seemed robotic, but the way he presented everything was actually clear and easy to understand. Not sure his vibe was a 5 but definitely a solid 4, and I did feel like I learned a lot in the end.
