Marxian Economics would have been alot harder with this guy
Great teacher. Really knows his stuff and cares if you learn it. Top notch.
Highly recommended. Exam essay questions are given in advance. Very fair grading system. Interesting lectures.
Excellent at realating material, very organized, fair grader. Expects work but tests are fair.
Teachers material well. However, essay assignments are flawed and tests formats are bad, it's always 5 general essay questions. Entire grade is based on 3 tests and two essays and discussion participation = hard course to get an A in.
concidering that the material that a 204 class has to cover (which sucks a phat one...) doc does the best he can, and actually finds a way to make it interesting. if you have to take this stupid class, make sure its with him, and o yea, never take it with karol heim or watever her name is.
Go to class, go to class, go to class. Straightforward and engaging lecturer, and one of the better intro econ classes. Course may be difficult to those who don't attend class, but for those who go, he hints at what readings, notes, etc will be on final, and often gives answer questions to essays in class. Just go!
awfulllll teacher. seriously so bad. avoid taking any class with him if you can. he puts materials on the tests that we never went over and the TAs are AWFUL
Worst teacher ever! don't take a class with him, hw is very hard and has nothing to do with class material. Discussions were uselss.
Guy is a very fair teacher. He left 7 pages of the final out by accident and ended up giving us free points for the sections he forgot and he weighted the easy essay to be worth a lot. Let us drop lowest exam score too. Interesting class.
Didn't go to any classes after Spring Break and still got an A...Lectures are dry, Discs are pointless, exans were do-able and Aplia's were kind of hard. If you take Micro or have had any Macro before you shouldn't have a problem. He cancels a lot of lectures because he teaches at another college. My TA was horrible but I heard that Mark S was good
I hear he is the best for 204. If you go to every single class, its not that hard to do well.
Nice guy. Vague lectures. Wasn't very clear on subject matter. Overall I did not enjoy the class and would not recommend it. If you study its not too difficult to get a good grade but it took forever to get my test grades back.
He is the best professor at umass. I loved this class and thought he did an excellent job teaching it. You need to go to class, because the textbook just does not cut it.
I didnt think the lectures were helpful.. uses aplia and the questions are straight out of the book.. my TA sucked so it sucked even more... test are difficult to study for.
Great professor learned a ton should go to class he explains concepts well and tests are very easy
Friendly guy except for the fact that i hate him due to 4 hours a week of hw
Nice guy, gives useful examples. Wants students to do well. Aplia sucks and will bring down your grade. Exams are straight foward and fairly easy to study for (just don't leave it to the last minute). Overall a very interesting class with real world applications. Nice introduction to financial markets.
He's a pretty good teacher, uses good examples during class. He puts all of his powerpoints online eventually, which is AMAZING because attendance is not necessary.. especially for an 8AM. His test and exams are kind of hard though.. and the short answers are worth alot so you really need to know what you're talking about. Not a bad class choice
MacroEc.-he is very intelligent, however since he knows his material like the back of his hand, he expects you should too. He covers during class, if you skipped you might miss something he will put on a test.My TA was not really helpful but I heard others are. Tests are hard, only about half of what is on the S.G. is on the test. Study w/a partner
Professor Dolenc was a great teacher last semester. He keeps the class basic and easy to follow. Aplia sucks for hw but what can you do. Tests are easy in my opinion. You do have to make every lecture because he outs the slides online. However he can be interesting. I definitely recommend this class and Prof Dolenc as well
Great teacher and really cool guy def reccomend for an easy class.
He's a pretty good teacher but sometimes there's a little bit of bias but this is an econ class so it's expected. Only went to discussions for the exam portion. assignments are just like exams so if you do well then your set.
He made the class really interesting. In terms of exams, I don't think class is really necessary. He gives a study guide before the exam, just make sure you understand the concepts on the guide, and understand the homework assignment for the math part of the exams. Had him for two semesters the classes were about the same. Light workload.
He's a pretty good teacher, really nice and explains the material well. The homework on aplia isn't too bad. The exams aren't too hard but you have to actually study for them using the study guide he gives you and notes in class. The discussions don't really help either.
Do not take a class with him.
Explains things really well. Sit in the front. Take good notes. Aplia homework is long but pretty easy. Tests require a lot of writing so you can't really BS your way through. You have to try but it's pretty easy. He never responds to emails. Look at study guide topics...all short answer questions are from there. Reading book is really important.
Good guy. Gives good real life examples (not to be used on the tests). Aplia assignments don't always give the needed practice, so studying the book is highly recommended. The 8AM lecture isn't necessary, but never hurts.
Attendance was very optional for an 8am class. Missed about 60%-70% of the classes and pulled off an A-. Homework and discussions taught me the most, just copied notes from someone who went. Average professor.
Although going to his 8 am was hard, i definitely recommend going to class because he explains the topics with good relatable examples you can use on the exams. he gives study guides before his exams so there are no surprises. study each topic on them and you will do great
homework every week thats online. gives a study guide for every test so basically just find the answers and memorize them and you'll do fine. good teacher for macro
Really good at explaining concepts. Didnt take attendance but if you missed a class it threw you off. Tests were based on your understanding which was tough but it was all on the study guide if you could figure out how to do it.
Best teacher I have had for Econ. Great Explanations, great guy. Fair exams, no surprizes.
Pat is a great professor. He explains things very clearly and if you didn't understand anything, he will explain it in another way with examples. Tests were VERY straightforward. Really, as long as you go over the study guide and went to class, you will do great on the exam. Recommend!
Best econ theory professor. So clear with his presentations, his exams are easy but you really learn the material.
Pat is one of the better Econ teachers at Umass. Very good, clear lecturer and provides a study guide for exams. As long as you know everything on the study guide, you should do well. The book is needed for the Aplia code and to complete the Aplia assignments, which are fairly easy.
Pat Dolenc is a great professor for Econ 104. He explains everything very clearly and keeps the lecture interesting. Study guides given for exams, and the exams themselves are very easy if you study. Discussion sections are unnecessary to attend as long as you go to lecture. Great class.
Dolenc was a really nice guy. I am not at all interested in economics but I didn't mind going to his class. As long as you go to class and do the homework you will get a good grade. Also his study guides are normally identical to the tests.
LOVED HIM...even though it was an 8 a.m. :(
Highly recommend gives a study guide and everything no surprises on test
Professor Dolenc is an excellent professor. He is very engaging and makes a fairly dry topic (microecon) interesting and understandable. There are no surprises on the test, which is honestly all you can ask of a teacher. They are fairly challenging test but he does make sure you are fully prepared for them.
Loved this class! He makes the lecture easy to attend. Study guides tell you exactly what will be on the exam!!
the class is pretty easy for me, as long as you attend the classes and pay attention you will fully understand. the online assignment contains lots of questions and those are the ones he rarely talk in class. there are only 2 exams and a final. study guide is provided and it is very helpful. he will upload the notes on myeconlab as well.
Makes an 8 AM class bearable and not boring. He is pretty clear in the lectures, and nothing is mandatory, not even the discussions. The online work kind of has nothing to do with the lectures/tests but it's all really easy.
This guy is great, he's entertaining, he delivers the information very clearly, and he's really straightforward about what's going to be on the exams. I wish more professors at this school were like this guy. If you review what's on the study guides, and do your homework, you will definitely get an A.
Go to class, do the MyEconLab and you'll be set. Fairly entertaining and clearly explains concepts. Gives study guides for exams that make them impossible to fail. He also posts every powerpoint online. Overall, great class and professor.
He made an 8 AM class pretty easy to go to. Very clear in class and makes the notes as simple as possible to explain the concept. Gives you study guides with everything that will be on the test so there's no surprises. His TA's aren't the best but the class is impossible to fail.
Go to class, use the study guides and go to discussion to pick up tests. This class is incredibly easy. The online homework bears no resemblance to the actual tests. It would be very difficult not to get an A in this class.
This class could be easy if you just do the work, he explains everything in class and even does problem solving that isn't on the power points which is helpful. He isn't that bad of a teacher but when his voice cracks you want to get up and leave but that can all be ignored with lots of effort and training.
Dolenc is really nice! He made an 8AM less painful. His slides are clear and easy to understand and he posts them all incase you miss class. He gives a study guide for every test thats very straightforward and you will get an A if you study it. LOVE him.
His lectures and explanations are very clean and concise. If it wasn't clear the first time, he'll use some form a metaphor or story to prove his point so that you do get it. Exams were straight off of material summarized on study guide. Discussions aren't really mandatory; they're just a reiteration of what was said in class, but good for review.
Great guy, great class. Has a powerpoint lecture each class, which is also available online. Homework was through Person MyEconLab. Provides a complete study guide with 10 or so concepts to master before the test, and only 7 of them are on the test. Final is cumulative, but its only the bullets on the study guide that weren't tested.
He is a great professor! He is engaging and keeps class interesting. Class is not super easy but if you pay attention its not hard. He gives a very helpful study guide and if you actually study you should do well. Going to class is helpful but not necessary. I had him for 103, and he was so good that I made sure I took him for 104. Highly recommend
One of the better professors on campus. All his slides are online and he actually explains clearly what the topics are with good examples. Homework isn't that hard as it's all online but it does take some time to do it though. Exam are all basically straight memorization as he gives a bulleted list of about 10 topics to know for the exam.
Took 103 with him so made sure I had him for 104. He truly does make this course an intro course and tries to make everything as clear as possible for you. Discussions weren't mandatory but were helpful if you didn't understand some concepts. The exams have no surprises because he pulls everything exactly off the study guide.
He explains things very thoroughly and in an understandable manner. 3 homework assignments, 3 exams. Great guy, easy class, highly recommend.
Took 103 and 104 with him, he's a great prof. If you have a friend in the class, the three hw assignments and studying for the 2 tests and final are a breeze. Everything is clearly explained in the powerpoints, which are online. Don't bother buying the textbook- just attend lecture and discussion and you'll do great
GREAT professor. Lectures are engaging and he puts a lot of effort in making key concepts clear with diagrams, real-life examples and mathematical problems. Exams are very fair and manageable as long as you invest some effort in reviewing lectures and reading the book. I wish I'd had him for Econ 103 too!
BEST professor I've had so far. Clear, gives great and memorable examples, doesn't rush through things, interacts with the class in a fun way. Gives good feedback and definitely knows what he is talking about, engaging at all times. Attendance not mandatory but you need it to pass.
Great class that he makes interesting. You don't have to show up to the lectures, but it will make the course and material much easier. Unfortunately, he no longer allows you to skip a question on his tests (although there is a study guide for each one). Drops some of the homeworksquizzes at the end of the semester.
Overall wicked easy, everything is straight forward, take notes in class and remember those for the exams and you're guaranteed and 100
Great professor. He is very jolly and easy going. This class should be super easy as long as you either pay attention during lecture, or read the book. Class isn't mandatory, but discussion sections are and those help your grade just by showing up. Exam material is clearly told and should be easy if you use a study guideslides that are online.
Professor Dolenc gives great lectures, making everything clear and understandable. He is very personable and willing to help his students. Everything you need to know he puts on the study guide and doesn't add in any tricks or surprises to trip you up. You don't really need the book since it comes with the online code. Highly recommend him!
Professor Dolenc is a great teacher! He is clear in his lectures, does not assign too much reading/homework and does not surprise you on the exams (he gives a study guide showing about 8-10 topics and picks 4-5 of them to go on the test). Highly recommend taking econ with him
This man turned a dry subject rife with policies and money into an engaging learning experience full of lively examples and inclusion of the students in lecture. Not only does he teach very well, but he displays fantastic people skills like smiling, remembering the names of people in a +300-person class, and much more. Take his class!
Tests are very straight-forward and fair, nothing like trick questions. Tests do have at least one question based on the reading, so it is best to read the textbook, but he goes over all concepts clearly in lectures. He presents real life scenarios to help gain understanding of big scale concepts on a smaller scale.
Lectures help (and has stuff that shows up on the exams), so take notes. Exams are 4/5 open response and 1/5 other, and worth a good chunk of your grade. If you don't understand something, you can google it or ask your TA at discussion. Only get the online textbook if you need it: Ended up paying an extra $60 for nothing. Worth waking up at 8AM.
His lectures are very interesting, and he can convey the topics with humor and clarity. His slides are posted online, but he gives essential information in lectures, and the discussion sections can help to solidify your understanding depending on your TA. He gives clear study guides for each exam which make studying a world easier. Don't skip.
Professor Dolence was a really great professor to have to learn the basics. He spends time explaining and breaking things down so you're not just mindlessly plugging in numbers. His exams are very straight forward and the online homework is easy. Great professor, but beware of skipping classes, he only puts his guideline notes up on moodle.
Great Professor, he is about as straightforward as you can get. Attend class if you can, and try to do well on the homework. I didn't really give it much though when I could have easily done better. STUDY for the tests too, they're worth most of the grade and he gives fantastic study guides. Extremely engaging as well.
Dolenc was an amazing professor to have; his class is engaging and enjoyable. Homework is worth 20%, so it's easy points added to your grade. Lectures are posted online, however he goes much more in depth in class. He truly cares about his students and is very helpful during office hours. Tests are easy as long as you study the study guide!
Class is very easy. Show up to lectures. Slides are online but contain little to no information. Exams are easy. You just need to memorize notes from class. He gives you a study guide of all possible topics on the exams. Homework is very minimal. Discussions aren't mandatory and are not needed to do well.
He is a great professor! If you have any interest in Economics you will not get bored in class. He gives great examples in class that really make the material easier to comprehend. Going to class and reading the book is really help with the tests because some of the questions he gives answers to during the class.
His lectures are confusing because he tells random stories but he is a very nice guy and truly wants us to do well. Your TA's are extremely important because they grade and go over your tests with you so create a relationship with them if possible. He posts lecture slides on moodle but they are not detailed at all so attendance is important.
I won't say you can get A that much easy. But if you work harder before the exam, you will be fine. Only three exams for a semester, no pop quiz, no paper, no project.
The tests count for a lot of your grade, so study hard. Also, if you don't do the textbook readings, you'll be lost. That being said, Professor Dolenc is a really nice guy, an engaging lecturer, and a teacher who genuinely wants his students to do well. Don't skip the lecture because the online slides barely have any info, and be nice to your TA!
Professor. Dolenc teaches the material very clearly and you do not have to go to class. I went to two class and got an A. Just take notes on his powerpoints on Moodle and you'll be fine.
Professor Dolenc is great; He's personable, easy to learn from, and knows more about his subject than a high of majority of teachers will do. If you are taking Micro or Macro, I'd recommend trying to enroll in it with him.
Professor Dolenc has been one of my favorite professors so far at UMass. He explains concepts in ways that are easy to understand, and clearly outlines everything you will need for exams; just study from the study guide and you'll get an A no problem. Attendance at lectures discussions isn't mandatory, no papers or projects. Learned a lot.
I had Professor Dolenc in both 103 and 104. He is very clear on the material and gives clear examples to help you understand. He is there to help you learn and warns you about what is most likely to be on the exam and his uses study guides. Homework isn't awful, reading helps.
This class makes you get lots of preparation for the exams. You need to prepare enough before the exams to get good grades. You must go to lectures if you want to understand materials based on professor's lectures. Nothing helpful on PPT.
Dolenc is a very good professor. You'll definitely learn A LOT. You have to study for tests a lot too if you want a good grade. 2 midterms (25% each) and a final (30%). Homework was worth 20% and required you to read the book. The tests are mainly on lectures, but he'll definitely stick a question or two from the book or his readings on Moodle.
The Econ 104 with Dolenc is very straight-forward. There are three exams (25%, 25% and 30%) and My Econ Lab assignments worth 20%. The exams have four short answer questions and two calculation questions. However, he gives you a study guide for every exam and if you listen in class, the exam material is very accessible. I highly recommend Dolenc.
Dolenc is a nice enough guy. Lectures are kind of pointless because the powerpoints are posted online. The homeworks are really easy and require minimal effort not very often. He also drops the lowest two scores. To do well on the tests, I just studied a ton and taught it all to myself the day before. Easy A.
This guy is the man. Best econ professor ive had so far at UMass. Good lecturer and passionate about the material. Tests are easy.
This is a very basic class, so expect to learn that much. Dolenc definitely know what he's talking about, and the lectures are very clear, if a little simplistic. if you go to the lectures and discussions, you'll be fine. Don't worry about buying the textbook, it's expensive and he doesn't use it. Good professor, not the most interesting class.
this class has 3 exams, as long as you good at taking exams, you will be fine. Professor Dolenc will sent his slides after class and i really love my TA!!
He conducts class very clearly and provides all the material you need to succeed. The textbook is required to get the access code for weekly online assignments with the answers easily found in the textbook. Most of your grade depends on three exams, all topics on these exams are provided on a study guide beforehand.
This class is most focused on the tests. You have to study a LOT for the exams and basically pray you have a good TA since they're the ones who grade the exams. I found discussions really helpful even though my TA didn't make them mandatory. The online homework isn't bad since it's straight from the textbook.
Was a challenging class with 3 exams being 80% of the grade, but Prof. Dolenc was immensely helpful outside of class and really showed how much he cared for his students. Take him for Econ no question.
Class can be a bit of a chore but is very manageable. His lectures are a bit all over the place but refrain from skipping class as his slides are bare. I would recommend sharing one textbook copy between a few friends, and ALWAYS do the online homework together. This way you can use trial and error to get 100% because the homework is weighted heavy
Really good in lecture, makes it interesting and easy to understand. Slides were minimal, so it is tough to go back and review the slides if class is missed. However, since its my 9am, I've slept throw it 3 or 4 times and every time was able to read the textbook and keep up. My favorite professor freshman year!!
Class is informative, slides are minimal. Tests are hard and specific, essay style.
Tests are just a few questions that require a one page essay for each. He gives a list of possible questions beforehand, so the most helpful thing is to go to discussions/review where the TAs go over what to know for each question. He describes material clearly in class, but slides lack detail.
Dolenc is a great lecturer. He will ask a question on a test that he mentioned in class so go, but he makes it worth while. He gives a study guide that tells you everything you need to know, so dont be dumb and look past things or it will cost you big. Overall, tests are easy and it is an interesting course. Highly recommend.
Dolenc's lectures are great. He truly cares about teaching his students. There are 3 tests and online homework. The tests are challenging but doable. The test usually consist of three open responses and two problem solving questions. Go to class, take good notes, and pay attention and you will do great. Study for every test as well!
This class is early, but trust me, if you want to do well - GO TO CLASS. He asks questions on the exam based on things he mentioned in class. Probably one of the best Macro professors you will get at UMass. Tests have a lot of material though, so you definitely need to study and use the study guide that he gives you.
His lectures are good but his slides are a little vague and confusing. He gives you a study guide of exactly what will be on the test. You'll have to study but you can definitely can an A on everything. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what he's talking about in his lecture and its often different from the study guide.
Dolenc is a really great professor! You can tell he cares about his students and he gives thought to his lectures, which I really recommend going to because the book and slides only have so much info. Youre graded on only a few things but it's doable with the study guide
Dolenc is good at explaining things but make sure to take notes because he doesn't include many words on his powerpoints. On exams Dolenc likes to throw curb balls at his students, throwing on questions we often didn't talk about in class, so do all of the readings throughly!!! Definitely not the hardest class but not the easiest either.
Dolenc is a really good lecturer and he broke down the macro concepts in an easy-to-understand way. He does cover a lot in lectures, so if I would miss a lecture I felt like I was behind. The homework isn't too hard to handle, but the readings are important for exams.
Easy A for Econ 104. He wants everyone to do well. He puts up the powerpoints but definitely still go to class because he says things that you'll need for the exams.
Attendance is not mandatory and he posts his slides to moodle, but he leaves them very vague. I recommend going to class because he often discusses exam topics. The homework is pretty simple but exams are heavily weighted. Make sure to do the readings because they often show up on exams even if they are not discussed in class.
Dolenc is a good teacher and often tries to interact with his students during his lectures. He posts his powerpoints online, but leaves out most details to encourage you to go to class. Most of your grade is determined by 3 exams which are all handwritten, so you must know what you are talking about, but it is doable with the study guides he gives
Professor Dolenc is a good choice for ECON 104. Lectures are pretty interesting and he does a good job with his lectures. The HW is easy and exams are free response that are randomly chosen. Your grade basically depends on your TA and how much partial credit you get on exams. Don't be surprised if you end up with a higher grade than expected:)!
Did not like lectures or the way he speaks. Notes are not accessible outside of class because he wants you to go to lectures. Tests are soooo easy all you have to do is use the study guide he gives and you should be able to guess what the questions are going to be. Homework is online and really easy as well. TAKE THIS CLASS MAD EASY!
Dolenc is a really great guy and professor. The entire grade is based off 3 tests and a small number of online homework assignments, so there is not a ton of work. Most of the work he gives is reading, which he doesn't quiz on but often pulls reading topics for the tests. I would definitely recommend him for macroecon; easy if you do all the work.
He is a good lecturer and makes it required to come to every class, as he does not post any notes or resources online. Your only grades are the easy homework assignments, and just 3 tests. The homework is really easy to do well on, but the tests can be nitpicky so be prepared to know the content very well.
Pretty good lecturer, good guy, my only complaints are the dangerously specific tests and how he declines to even clear things up on the readings, which will be featured on the tests. A teacher declining to teach... not helpful at all.
Dolenc's lectures and the textbook tend to oppose one another so the material you are tested on is sometimes confusing. TAs are helpful to outline these differences. Study guide is most helpful when preparing for tests. Material is somewhat boring but the class as a whole isn't horrible. Lots of reading assigned but not totally necessary.
Test Format is all open response blank page you writing what you know about the particular subject he chooses. Tough time but gives more information in lecture than on the slides so go to class and pay attention.
10/10 don't recommend taking Econ 104 with Dolenc. What he teaches in class has no correlation to the my Econ lab homework that you have to pay a lot of money to access. Exams are very difficult so need to study day and night once he gives out study guide a week ahead of the exam. Utilize TA discussions, can be very helpful if you have a good TA.
This class was cake. Just study the study guide and you will be fine. Got a 100 on first exam and 93 on second exam. Overall, classes at Umass are a joke and have a cumulative 4.0 why did I choose This school
Study the study guides and you'll be fine, you only really have to go to the last couple lectures before the exam. I realized by the second exam I had been reading a micro economics book instead of macro and I still got a 97 and 85 on both exams. Have to put in work but easier than other teachers.
The exams are insane and 80% of your grade. The remaining 20% is the overpriced my econ lab that doesn't help you learn anything. your study guide will just be a list of topics. not even practice problems for the math sections. If you have difficulty with open response heavy tests or word for word memorization avoid this class like the plague
Patrick is a good teacher and explains the concepts well. However, the exams count for 80% of your final grade and cover a lot of material. It is important that you start studying for tests in advance and take good notes in lecture.
Dolenc always broke down topics very clearly and gave great examples. The exams are hard, but if you do the readings and know the topics on the study guide well, its definitely possible to get As on all your exams. He posts lecture slides online, but theyre really vague. You definitely have to go to class if you want to do well on the exams.
Lectures are heavily packed with information. He posts the slides online as a supplement, but they are extremely vague and do not explain much, making lecture attendance almost required in order to understand the material. Tests are worth a lot and they are pretty difficult. Make sure you get a good TA, who can help with office hours and extra help
Dolenc is a great lecturer! He provides real world examples and explain difficult concepts multiples times to make them memorable; however, by doing so, the assigned chapter readings sometimes seem rather irrelevant to what the lectures follow. If you pay close attention to lectures and connect their contents to readings, you'll get an easy A.
Does not go over concepts as well as he should have to prepare us for our exams and I wish his grading was not 80% being tests this literally kills people and test should not be the defining factor of a student's grade
Since the lectures were not mandatory I rarely attended the 9am class for most of the beginning of the semester. I realized I was truly screwing myself when I failed our first exam. I started going to every lecture and taking notes. He gives a summary study guide of what *could* be on the exam. Make sure you go through and take notes on all of it!!
Teacher is not bad. Class is sometimes interesting but test are 80% of grade. Class completely depends on who you get as a TA. My class average test score was 71%, but the other class average test score 80+
I loved this class. The lectures are very easy to understand and the class . Always gives study guides before tests and they are exactly what are on the tests. Ta's are knowledgable. Textbook is online but easy to work and understand. Overall great class, nothing overwhelmingly hard.
Dolenc was a good professor that held engaging and interesting lectures, but would assign extra reading outside of the textbook and intentionally make slides vague which means you need to take good notes while in lecture. The tests were in essay format with some problem solving questions and made up a most of the grade. Grading depends on your TA.
Literally still waiting for my final grade a week after I took my exam... anyway he's alright I guess does not really hold office hours and tests are 80% so yea just good to class try to good notes, as his slides are vague and you have to go to class to get information. Overall not the best experience
I would not suggest taking this class with this professor.
do not take this class with this professor! the exams are 8 questions ALL ESSAYS NO MULTIPLE CHOICE and you have 2 exams + a final which are worth 80% of your grade. The other 20% comes from quizzes which are mostly based off of the assigned readings and lectures. The exams take literally 2-3 hours each. 10/10 DO NOT recommend this prof.
literally do not take Econ with this prof. the lectures seem easy to understand but some of the analogies make no sense. 80% of the class is exams and the exams are all essays/problem solving. I never ONCE got feedback on my exams I would just get my grade and no comments so I had no idea on what to improve on. He also takes 2 weeks to grade exams.
Miss anything? NO CHANCE to take it. Attend lectures, make sure u take notes and have something to rely on during the exams (each took 4 hrs avg) or a friend to work w. Cracked down on class gcs & threatened anybody who got help. I took the BEST notes but if you're not understanding you're done for. TA sessions before exams give hints & really help
Professor Dolenc assigns crazy amounts of reading, the quizzes are easy because they are open note but you can't miss them or you get a 0 regardless of your excuse. There is little to nothing on his slides which he tells you that his speaking is important but half the time just goes on tangents. The exams are graded in 2 weeks or more. DONT TAKE IT
Dolenc is difficult but if you go to all the lectures you will be ok. There are weekly quizzes worth 20% and 2 midterms 25% each and a final 30%. The exams are all short answer and problem solving based but he gives you a study guide a week before with 8 topics on it and puts 4 on the exam. If you study hard for this class you will be ok.
The exams account for most of your final grade (80%) and are very difficult for a beginner-level class, only short answers. Poor slides, no info. I would not recommend it!
Dolenc is good at explaining things in a clear manner. He knows what he is talking about. But, you need to attend the lectures to get a good grade. Lectures are not recorded, and he is the type of teacher who wants you to take notes on what he says, not on the slides. Tests are straightforward, but are 80% of your grade. Quizzes are the other 20%.
Professor Dolenc is a good lecturer. However, his slides are not informative at all. This class is very test-heavy, where exams constitute 80% of your grade. They are also exclusively free-response questions, so you won't see any multiple choices here.
Only given weekly quizzes and three IN PERSON exams, so all your being graded on is how good of a test taker you are. quizzes aren't bad they're doable but exams you're given 8 concepts which four will be on the exam, lot to memorize. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, THERE ARE EASIER PROFESSORS WITH ONLINE TESTS AND EASIER WORK
literally don't take this class with this prof. Tests are worth so much of your grade I failed my first exam but got As on the others, did good on weekly quizzes but it didn't even bring my grade up. Its a huge lecture and don't take attendance but you won't be able to pass without going he also talks way too fast in lectures. this class is brutal
whatever you do DONT take this class. Your whole grade depends on your ability to take tests and it is very test heavy. The tests are all essay questions and you have to memorize legit all the material including graphs. (there basically impossible to do good on unless you memorize everything). do whatever you can to avoid class with this professor.
This class really wasn't bad. I actually think that the exams were fair, and he only asked questions about topics that were clearly mentioned on the study guide. As long as you go to review sessions, you should have no problems with exams. He was good at explaining things; the only downside was that lectures were not recorded.
He tries really hard to be a fun teacher and the lectures are interesting. Pretty easy grader and not too much homework. Would recommend
Great professor, tests are graded by TAs, however, so get a good TA or else you might get harshly graded. Dolenc taught really well and had great presentations/slides but tests were more on the difficult side
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. EXTREMELY HARD EXAMS. LECTURES DON'T GIVE ENOUGH INFORMATION FOR THE EXAMS. I STUDIED 24 HRS PLUS FOR THE EXAMS.
Very poorly structured class. Grade is based on weekly quizzes that basically check if you pay attention in class/do the readings, but the exams, that are worth most of your grade, are made of 6 short answer questions. Even if you know 90% of the material inside and out, odds are the 10% that he briefly went over in class will be on the exam.
Terrible
The exams make up most of your grade for this class, and they are fairly difficult. Even after preparing for days before exams and going over the models and notes presented in class, I am still expecting to receive only a B grade. I would expect this difficulty from a more specialized course, but not a gen-ed. The grading was very tough as well.
Genuinely a good professor, but the tests are unreasonably hard and the topics are very hard considering this is an INTRO economics course. The TA's are very very unforgiving.
Patrick Dolenc overall is good at teaching. The course is extremely exam heavy exams are graded unfairly as different TAs are looking for different things on the exams. He gives you a study of topics to know for exams however not what about the topics to know and not all information to know is presented.
Out of all the professors for Econ 104, I would go with Dolenc. One thing I've learned from this class is to go off what your TA says and not the professor since they are the ones who grade your exams. Make sure to study and go to class because exams are worth 80% of your grade.
Patty D is a terrible professor. If you have a chance to take this class with someone else you should. The first thing he said to us on the first day of class was that only 1/3 will pass and the rest will fail. Must be a good test taker because exams make up 80% of your grade. The other 20% come from the lengthy textbook chapter quizzes. Good luck.
My cup of tea
Most of the work is done by the TAs, but he gives good lectures if you show up. Your grade is mostly made up of 3 large tests, which can be intimidating. If you show up and do the HW, you will do well.
your grade relies only on the exams
He sucks
Your grade is based on exams, you really have to study hard. If you're not a good test taker, you're screwed.
All you need to do is show up to class and do well on the exams. He's a good lecturer and the exams aren't even difficult, you just regurgitate your notes onto the exam which are based on the lectures.
Course is heavily exam based with a couple online quizzes. Though if you go to the lectures and study you'll perform fine. Dolenc is an amazing lecturer and does a good job keeping his classes informative and engaging. Absolutely reach out to your TA and form a relationship because they'll be doing all the grading on your exams.
Prof. Dolenc is a cool guy and a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory and you need to take notes. Lectures were not recorded but I found them to be interesting and engaging. The class lass consisted of weekly readings with an online quiz (easy) and 3 exams including the final. Overall, it was an easy class if you attend class and stay engaged.
Great professor, great guy. Interesting lectures. Highly recommend for Econ 104. One note: it is test heavy, and if your TA is a hard grader, it can be rough. But it is gonna be like that with any professor with econ 104, so I definitely recommend Patrick.
For this class you have to attend the lectures, but the material was not overly difficult. The lectures do have a fast pace and the test are writing heavy. This class also does require you to do a little bit of math. One quiz a week, and no other mandatory assignments. Definitely study a lot for the exams if you want to do well.
You have to go to basically all the lectures if you want to do good. Patrick is a good teacher and makes lectures somewhat interesting and engaging. There is one quiz a week as basically the only homework and only other part of your grade outside the 3 exams which are all open response and problem solving. Show up and take notes and you'll be fine
Basically just show up to class and take notes because the slides aren't helpful. I had him as a 9 am and his lectures were interesting enough to keep me awake. There are 3 exams that are worth a lot of your grade, but he gives you the topics in advance. If you understand/memorize the concepts and how to do the problem-solving you should do well.
Definitely have to go to Prof. Dolenc's lectures to do well in this class. He makes them pretty interesting though, and lays out all the topics that will be on an exam. TAs were pretty good too - they grade your exams so go to their office hours. Not a bad class to take if you need Econ.
STUDY A LOT for the exams. The lectures barely help and Dolenc is vague and doesn't help explaining or anything. He basically makes you figure out everything yourself and my TA didn't grade on a curve and he wouldn't let you argue with him a ton to get points back. It's a fast paced course and try to actually try to understand the material.
His lectures are very engaging and straightforward which is very nice, but the information on the slides is not a lot so you have to pay attention during lectures. The exams are all open response which seems hard but it's actually easier to study for and the study guides have all the information you need.
It is not hard to get an A if you study a lot. His slides are undetailed, so if you miss a class, you might be lost. But, I had a great TA who explained everything well in the discussions. The class itself is not that difficult if you just put in the effort.
Although I thought Professor Dolenc was good and found his lectures particularly helpful, I learned much more from my TA who seemed to explain topics a lot better. It really just depends on the topic though. He explained some better than others. The class is exam-heavy (80% of your final grade), but exams aren't bad if you study correct material.
I thought this professor was awesome and his outline of the class was very clear. You have two midterms that are concept heavy but he provides a study guide which was super helpful. The final is the concepts that were on the previous study guides but were not used on the test. Overall, I recommend choosing this professor for macroeconomics.
Some material was tough, but it never got too hard to comprehend. The lectures can get insanely boring and the TA section goes over that stuff anyways, but I think attending lectures does help. The tests are 80 percent of your grade but he gives a study guide a week before each one. Overall a nice guy and an enjoyable course.
Your grade in this class relies HEAVILY on the midterms (250 points each, 500 total) and the final (300 points) with the online quizzes only making up 250 total possible points out of 1000. The TA was able to explain the topics exceptionally better. Overall, you will need to put work in if you want an A as the class is very test-heavy.
Dolenc is a kind man who cares about his students' understanding. He spends a lot of time trying to explain things in a way that we can understand. Lectures are mandatory and exams are in person and all written answers. If you study the exam materials beforehand, you should be totally fine. Putting in effort goes a long way with him & his TAs.
Professor Dolenc is a nice guy, but the class relies heavily on the exams. There are two midterms and a final equaling 80% of your grade. The remaining 20% is from weekly quizzes on lecture material and readings. Attendance is optional, but some things he talks about that could be useful for exams are not posted online.
This guy is hands down AMAZING. I can be honest in saying there is not a lot of information on his slides. However, if you go to his lectures and take notes on what he says, you will learn so much. Professor Dolenc is excellent at breaking down concepts and making them easy to understand. Test-heavy, but he gives you a solid study guide to prepare
Dolenc is an elite professor. You do have to go to lectures but they are interesting. Dolenc also keeps it simple, often simplifying topics and making them easy for you to understand. Truly an amazing professor for a lecture hall and he is REALLY good at teaching this class. REALLY good.
Dolenc's class is hard and you do have to work to get a decent grade, but he is SO good at teaching this class. He always makes topics easy to understand and his examples in class are very good. For exams he gives you a study which is VERY helpful. Overall, this class is hard, but Dolenc is a great prof and you will learn a lot if you put in effort
God I loved intro to macro with Dolenc. He takes his time to explain everything with examples from the real world and he really values participation during his explanations so maybe dont sit at the front if you dont want him to use your name throughout the lecture. His exams are super straightforward and he always says when something is important.
The examples he gave during the lecture were so confusing to me. Although he will provide review guides for each exam, exams are still not easy. Every question on the exam sheet worth 5% of the total grade and there's no multiple choice. You have to explain each concept for 6-8 sentences. All your grades are decided by you TA.
Lectures could sometimes drag but usually the content was very interesting. He gives good examples and explains things well. The exams are kind of long but he gives good study guides + two bonus quizzes.
The exams can be a bit difficult because you're expected to memorize a lot of graphs and formulas. Professor Dolenc is able to explain concepts in an accessible way through analogies and real life examples. You have to attend the lectures or else you won't do well on the weekly quizzes, and a lot of the content is explained verbally in class.
Exams are tough but fair. If you attend all lectures and do the readings, you will do fine in this class. He's a very good lecturer and the workload is easy to manage (only one at-home quiz a week). If you put in the effort you will get a lot more out of this class compared to other ECON104 classes.
In the Econ104 class that I took, the class was extremely lecture heavy. I had a weekly discussion and without it, I don't think I would have passed this class. The lectures felt very long and drawn out. So if you have a short attention span, then this professor is probably not for you.
He makes the topics very easy to comprehend, and always gives extra materials if you need them. The course is definitely exam heavy, but as long as you keep up with the weekly reading and attend classes, you will be fine.
Great Prof. Slightly harder, but a fantastic professor. Go to lectures or you do not pass. Free textbook.
Don't take this class. You won't learn much Lecture is boring, he doesnt provide useful information. I did Macro course on Khan Academy and found it was more useful than getting this class. Test-heavy, 80% the final grade relies on exams you cannot review your past answers on quiz If have a better choices please do not choose this class.
Dolenc's class is very easy to get an A in if you study the study guide he provides. He does graded take home quizzes for homework where all the answers are in the text book. The tests are a lot to memorize and are all short answers including math. Also take notes in the lecture and attend discussion for extra credit.
I really like this guy. I don't go to lectures but still do well on exams and I'm not even smart and I barely put effort in. Gives a very helpful study guide outline and very transparent on what exams will be on. You can tell he loves teaching.
He is a really good lecturer and really tries to make stuff clear for you in class. Has 3 in person exams but everything else is online. Grading depends on TA for exams.
This course was easier than ECON103 in my opinion. Online open-note quizzes (due on Sundays). The professor is engaging, and he cares about teaching. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you could miss information that he doesn't put on the slides (which is usually on exams.) The TA's grade the exams, so go to the discussions. Overall an okay class.
This guy is great. Clearly wants his students to learn and he sets up the syllabus for the best success. Exams are a bit difficult in my opinion, but his study guides are helpful. Wish he was more accessible outside of class, but my TA helped me out whenever he couldn't be reached.
Pat Dolenc is all you could ask for in a class with upwards of 400 students. He's an active lecturer and gives great real-world, relatable analogies to make the content of the course easier to understand. Weekly online quizzes, two mid-terms and a final. It's slightly work heavy but putting standard effort into the class will definitely do you well
The lectures are boring and he isn't the greatest at explaining the material. Show up and participate in your discussion because if you do your TA will grade you more favorably on the tests which are like 70-80% of your grade.
The class is just okay. Lectures are boring and the slides are god awful. He has a complex or something about not making attendance required but not putting anything on the slides so you have to go to class. Three huge tests, if you're good at memorization you'll get an A. Super dependent on TAs, which sucks because mine was terrible.
Pat is nice overall . NO HW, one weekly quiz due sunday night but those dont help at all with exams since exams are all short answer. Exams are moderately hard, YOU NEED TO STUDY. You dont need to attend lecture, he doesnt do a great job explaining things anyway. Exams are 80% of your grade and theres 3. Would take again, but not the best prof
Dolenc comes off as a professor that does not care about his students. This class is very lecture heavy. Final is 30% and Midterm is worth 50% of your grade. He waits until the last day of lectures before the midterm to give all the material on the vague study guide (usually 2 days before midterm). The TA's are hit or miss.
Such a great professor! I struggled with this class because it was more math than I was prepared for but I also only took Algebra in high school. Knowing this I reached out to Patrick before the final and he took the time to go over my notes and scheduled a Zoom meeting with me. He took an hour out of his day to help me prepare.
He talks a lot of nothing during lectures but casually drops important points that make up exam. He explains concepts through stories not clear definitions, and slides have mostly pictures. 80% of your grade is from 2 midterms and a final with only open response questions, some exam material isn't covered in class but from weekly readings.
I think that he is very passionate about what he does and he understands what he is talking about but he doesn't explain it properly. I feel like in his class I am lost because he doesn't have good slides and since he doesn't have good slides he is yapping and a lot of the time he is yapping about nothing important.
This class (like every 100-level gen ed) is not difficult if you take time to study. The lectures were very useful to me! However, you NEED to go to class, you will understand concepts if you are engaged and pay attention. Had an easy canvas quiz once a week, bulk of the grades are from 3 exams (open response and problem solving). He is passionate!
Just go to the lectures and use worksheets from the SI and you'll get an A. I got a 100 on all the tests and it was very easy because I utilized the SI. The study guides tell you everything on the test.
Pretty average teacher. Can be boring sometimes and its easy to lose focus, but he isn't a bad instructor by any means. Sometimes it feels like his UMass class is less of a priority than his main institution but its still a good class to take nonetheless. I enjoyed my semester.
horrible lecturer. Dont take this class especially if its in the morning. Also the tests have only open response questions, no multiple choice.
Lectures are interesting but exams are extremely hard. All open response questions and points will be taken off if you don't put specific examples talked about in the lectures. If you attend SI sessions you should be fine but going to lectures probably wont be enough.
He's a good professor and I genuinely learned from him. No glaze but I started to enjoy economics because of him. I would recommend taking 104 with him though the tests aren't so easy. You do have to memorize a lot of the material, it's not too difficult of concepts. You have to go to the lectures to understand but the discussions aren't mandatory.
Lectures are engaging but your entire grade revolves around 3 exams which require a lot of memorization. Very TA dependent as well, if you have a strict grader you're essentially screwed for entire class. No homework, but weekly quizzes which are nothing like the exam problems. If you have the option to take 104 with another professor, do it.
He's a nice guy and knows what he's talking about, lectures can get boring- I didn't go much- but the discussion was better and the TA was good. There are 2 midterms and 1 final, and then there are weekly quizzes (online you can use the internet). No homework, but overall kind of boring but its a fine class
