Hard proff but a fun guy
STUDY PAST PAPERS FROM HIM IS A MUST
No Comments
he is greatt.......
Classes are fun, but tests are difficult
He seemed a little more than just friendly . Kinda creepy really
awesome teacher
No Comments
understanding is the key
explains well.....test are to hard, difficult to get a good mark even if u do know the material.
Very good teacher, knows what he's talking about. Hard tests. Will always help if you'll ask.
bad bad bad donot take with him
fruity teacher although the tests are unbearable
Great, funny guy.
very intelligent, easy to understand if you go to every class and pay attention...good sense of humor...tests are eplained and what's taught in examples are what to expect...if you don't like him then you're not trying and you're biased!!

he's a nice guy and all but his tests are all over the place. on his first test the class average sooooo low and then the 2nd it went up and the third it wnet down. He makes his exams harder than the class examples and says you can always ask for help but
good teacher, but the tests are severly harder than the class needs.
Great Teacher! Is always willing to help you with questions and gives lots of examples in class. His only downside is that he is sometimes a picky marker on the tests, but just put in some extra effort, practice and you will be fine! Hail to the Duffman!
You must know your material very well in order to do well on the tests, as part marks are rare. Extremely helpful if needed, has MSN and is almost always on. Fair, although hard and Duffy makes chem funYou must know your material very well in order to do
Very helpful teacher. He even helps you with the lab stuff! and if you catch him anywhere he'll answer your questions! Teaches well. Recommended.
very funny. his class is definitely not boring. if ur taking a morning class, take him, he'll wake u up. His marking system is hard. tests are difficult. much more harder then his examples in class. But his very helpful teacher. recommanded !!!!
ok nice guy if you like a guy who constantly makes sound effects for every little thing he says than you'd like him. and a bad part about him is..he doesn't give homework..so you don't know were to study from and his tests are nothing like the text book.
He's a very helpful prof but that doesnt really matter since his tests are crazyyyyy hard. Took this class twice failed once second time got a C-
Very funny and intelligent instructor.

Good sense of humour, but tests are very hard. Just take advantage of how helpful he is. Hell, he'll even explain the problem(s) right over MSN Messenger!
kinda hard.. but he is so cool ^^ I recommend him
yeah! mercedes benzene! =D duffy's a great teacher! but DAMN those organic rxns and that upcoming midterm!
Awesome prof. very helpful and clear. A little hard on the marking but that just provides more motivation to study.
He's pretty good
Very interesting prof. Gives good examples and is always willing to help. You need to put in the study time after every class to be successful. If you can't do this don't take his course as the tests are amazingly hard.
Humourous during class, Grest notes, Always there for extra help if needed (even on MSN) Hard Tests. Almost no part marks
he is an awesome teacher when it comes to questions after class hours and he's always willing to answer your questions but his tests are hard, you really need to do ALL the problem sets and practice exams to do well in his class. The best thing a bout him is he won't make you feel stupid for asking q
A horrible teacher, which cannot teach at all. His tests are difficult and is a very childish man, making the weirdest voices in class. Not recommended as being your chem. Teacher.
Nice teacher but kinda hard marker. I don't like chem in general but there were some teachers that help me understand it, he's not one of them.
I thought his exams were super hard, but all questions were ones that he gave examples of (he also posts past exams on his website). He is kinda weird, but it makes for an interesting class. Hardest Chem prof by far, and since he doesn't assign hw, you have to be able to guide your own studying.

I think he's a good teacher. He teaches you the key concepts of the course in a summarized fashion. His tests are all right as long as you prepare for them. I highly recommend Dr. Pat!
Duffy's not an easy teacher, not only does he not assign any problems for hmw, but he also teaches very fast and it is easy to fall behind. He zooms throught 2-3 chapters a day when he is pressed for time, thus, making the lessons extremely hard to comprehend in such a small period of time. His tests are EXTREMELY hard, so study WEEKs ahead, weeks!
Patrick Duffy as a person is very affable. But his test are inappropriatley hard. Although he does not make you feel stupid when you ask a question, if you ask to many, he will begin to nelgect you. If you value your GPA, you will not Sign up for Patrick Duffy's classes!
HARD TESTS. But if you go to his kwantlen page and do (ALL) his practice tests, you should have no problem getting a pretty high mark in his class. By giving ridiculously "hard" tests, he is simply preparing you for the reality of any career in chemistry. You're paying for the course, so he's just giving you more bang for your buck.
possibly the best teacher in the school. explains very clearly, very helpfull. very comedic too. cant go wrong. if you just "READ" and understand his notes over twice and do a practice exam or two, you will easily score over 75% in all his tests. enjoy
Easily the worst teacher I have ever had. Forget about being an Engineer if you need to take this course. Avoid at all costs.
his class notes just have the very basic steps you need to do for the questions on his tests. he gives simple ex. but his tests are nothing like them..he is helpful but you have to make the first step, you have to ask him..has three midterms and final... for the midterms dont just study the exams on the net... you have to think OUTSIDE ThE BOX
Lectures: Gives simple examples. Tests: Very hard questions. Help: Has plenty of problems online to do and is approachable for questions. Pro: Kinda funny. Tips: Get a textbook (he discourages buying one), do the onlines questions, and do the practivce tests.
He's pretty hilarious. Tests arent dat bad. just practice questions on his site often, then u can ace his tests. comments he always use: comments, questions, hows protest, among discusts, well despair. Also beware of his habit of dropping his textbook on his table to prevent people sleeping i his class.
his final is extremly hard! way out of the world
Just didnt like his way of teaching. He assumes that the students know the material before coming to class. I feel that his classes are good for reviews and refreshers. He is pretty bad introducing new concepts especially when ur in the 1154 class. Even though people say clade isnt a good teacher, i find claude better than duffy.
A great prof and a really funny guy.
Although others have said he is a well rounded teacher, I have found he did not help me very much. Because of him I had to stay one extra year at kwantlen before I could transfer to UBC. He was quite unhelpful to my problem in scheduling.
He's a good teacher. The material is hard but manageable if you do practice questions. I was just too lazy though.
Fun classes, I really look forward to them. Requires lots of independent studying and some mind reading, but I'll miss him when this class is over.
Everything in this course was very clear. Besides the organized presentations, there were lots of course information on his website. In addition, he was willing to help. We could easily find him according to his timetable. His tests were not easy though. To get a good mark, practicing his past exams (on his website) was a must.
He is struggling within himsef,a suitable subject for antropoligy students.
Pat is a very FUNNY teacher. Hoever, keep in mind that frequent practice of the material is REQUIRED in order to succeed. Granted, if you are in Engineering or similar faculty and do not have enough time to allocate an hour each day of the week to practice his teachings, please steer clear of his classes. He's not impossible, but needs time.
is not clear in his teachings. he expects the class to know the material before a lecture. his practice question he provides does not apply to any of his exams whatsoever! CAUTION: MUST STAY CLEAR OF THIS TEACHER AT ALL TIMES!!!
if you ever want to become an engineer, FORGET TAKING HIS CHEMISTRY CLASS. IM WARNING YOU, STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ENIGNEER. he WILL DESTROY your GPA. his tests are all NO CALCULATOR ( ie. you have to do logs, ln's all by hand ). Tests are super hard, class averages for his tests are 50% or lower. PLEASE STAY AWAY IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA.
hardest teacher i've ever had. Very unfair. if i knew he was a really bad teacher i would have seriously waited a year to take the chem course with another teacher. HE WILL DROP YOUR GPA no doubt about it.
He is not bad. The problem is that you need to practice (at least 10hrs per week.) Do the textbook exercises before trying the web questions because there are no detail solutions. If you do'nt have enough time, it is better to consider other options.
First of all Chem 1154 is by itself a VERY hard course: SO STUDY!! Duffy is decent as a teacher and genuinely wants you to do well. The problem is that he is rarely in his office at reasonable times and his explanations consist of "These are the steps, memorize them." There is NO explanation on why things are the way they are. He WILL drop your GPA
I was quite impressed with this prof. Very clear in lectures and notes, and I got a grade I was happy with. I had no trouble with this prof at all and the material is pretty interesting. However, you DO have to put in some time to review the notes and do some practice questions. He is also helpful in office hours, which I took advantage of.
Pat is the most helpful Chemistry teacher at Kwantlen. Material is presented clearly, and with lots of examples. Tests are based entirely off of IN CLASS EXAMPLES! He has Learning Center hours, office hours, AND he will do BIWEEKLY tutorials. Which other prof's do that? Show up to class, take good notes, don't wait to study the night before a test.
He is actually excellent as a professor. Very clear and logical.
Terribly hard teacher. Do not take. Unreasonable expectations and just a weird general attitude. Very hard and awkward to approach. Makes a usually easy chemistry class seem like a gulag.
Just had him for Chem 1094. Took this course because I failed Chem 11 in high school. Anyways, it's true his tests are hard. So advice? Study! and Practice! He's definitely there if you do need the help so it's all good.
This guy is a phenomenal teacher. He definately has challenging exams, however they only prepare you for your future in science based classes. Doing well in a science course is not supposed to be easy. If you cannot handle Duffy, I suggest you move onto another field as this is only the scratch on the surface of your academic future.
Great teacher, funny , explains things well. Would definately recommend this teacher and i hope to have him again next semester
There's nothing that I learned in his class that I couldn't have read from the textbook. He just goes over example word problems with minimal explanation. Very weird guy who tells jokes, curses a bit and hit the white board a lot. I could have received a better education in chemistry at a bar. Not very professional, but he is egotistical.
Great prof! explains things very well just go to all of the classes and do the practice work and I got an A
AMAZING! I absolutely suck at Chemistry and Dr.Duffy was such a phenomenal teacher. He is so clear and explains so well. Of course, the people complaining here were just LAZY and didn't bother attending class. Must attend class! Must do problem sets, must work hard as his tests are challenging, but I would take him again in a heartbeat. Got an A!
I took his course and never opened the textbook once. I didn't need to. That's the kind of prof this guy is, and the kind of prof every other prof should try to be. Very good at explaining things, not rushed at all, interesting lecture. Interesting humor... difficult tests but you're equally as well prepared for them. A+
Super hard class, but is the most entertaining class you will ever attend. Never opened the textbook. Always in his office or learning center. Has the best answers to your questions...he gives you the answer (except on tests obviously).
He loves chocolate and cats. In what order, I'm not sure. One time he brought in a cat made out of chocolate. I thought maybe he was going to share it with the class. Instead, he poured it some milk and placed it in the corner of the room. It was on the midterm
I loved Pat as a Prof. He was one of the best profs that I had at kwantlen. His tests are quite difficult, but he is really happy to help you if you ask for it. Work hard, do practise questions, and ask him for help and you will do well. He is very approachable and funny. Doesn't hold it against you if Chemistry isn't your best class.
One of the best profs in KPU, and he is funny. tests are really hard except final. really great professor, I love him even i only get B.
If you can, take chem 1154 somewhere else. Lecture are very messy and are NOTHING compared with tests. One of the worst instructor at KPU.
Old style professor, no powerpoint slides, you will loose plenty of time writing down stuff from board. Lectures are not clear. Your GPA is in danger, no matter if you are good or bad. If you are lucky you will get a B- or C.
A very knowledgeable individual, however, as instructor he is not worth one penny. You will figure it out yourself.
Dude, for a beginner them course he makes it so difficult to understand. He teaches well but then goes off topic for the exam and is not what ur excepting. IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD IN CHEMISTRY TAKES this a warning take it with someone else not Duffy. Maybe just use him as a chem tudor that is it.
do not wait to get butcherd by duffy, if yuo see that you are not doing well, withdraw and take 1154 in another college, trust me.
My suggest is not to take chem1154 here, this instructor is not helpful at all. no slides. tests are way too hard, the stuff that is online is too vague + the answers to tests dont have good explanation, and not to say, your GPA will fall to the ground.
Pat is an amazing prof! He teaches clearly, gives many examples and is ALWAYS available to help. He's also hilarious so class goes by quickly. However, his exams are EXTREMELY difficult and will have problems that are more complicated than those he taught. Bye bye GPA. I'd still take he again because he prepared me for future chem courses :)
Patrick is an amazing teacher! As awkward as he is, I found his lectures to be amazingly clear and easy to catch on to because he would put everything into simpler terms. His tests are tough, but whatever he says in lecture is what you're going to get in the tests. A lot of writing when it comes to notes, but that's only because he's very detailed.
the best teacher I have had in a long time!! his tests are hard but they prepared me for future classes. I recommend him to anyone who is starting out in chemistry. he is always available for help and he is the best!
I'm sure that I failed the final exam, but I did good on the midterms. I should get a D or F based on course policy, but I talked to Patrick, and got a C+. He is an extremely sincere, flexible, reasonable and funny teacher. Show him that you've tried in his class and he will give you a deserving grade. MAKE sure you study the previous final.
Study, study, study.
What to say? His lectures are a mess, I couldnt properly understand his lectures. my previous chem course I ended with an A+ , this with Patrick I almost failed. If you can take the course with another instructor.
I LOVE his classes. Finally understood some chemistry. Wish had him earlier as a prof. And god, he is SO FUNNY!
Great guy. Tests are really hard, but do his test prep and you'll do fine. Super nerdy sense of humour makes the lectures entertaining. 10/10.
The key to succeeding Patrick's class is to attend class. All of Patrick's midterms and final he writes himself, and the material he teaches is so similar to the tests. That being said, don't buy any textbooks, as by Patrick's recommendation, just use his site. Learning was easy as Patrick is constantly making jokes. He preps you so well for labs.
Just study and go see him if you struggle. His lectures are really straightforward, he teaches you concepts, then problems, rinse and repeat. Duffy has a need to stop to breath every few words sometimes and it was very distracting for me to listen to. His tests are also hard, the questions are always a step harder than the ones in lectures.
patrick is awesome. He made an 8am class worth going to. He makes his lectures very funny and interesting. He is always available to help and explains the material very well. The course itself is difficult and one cant expect to pass if no effort is put in.
Hes terrible!
He loves chemistry & he is always happy to help. But his lectures & his tests are a world apart. Due to the online class, you make notes off his lecture, and try to solve his problem sets on your own. You are literally teaching yourself., also he replies very late to his emails. He doesn't always give you partial credit even though he says he will.
He gives you unlimited practice problems and is always available for help. Super nice prof.
I had him as a professor for Chem 1110 and 1210 and he was my favourite professor. All I can say is if you don't understand something, ask questions! I asked so many questions each semester I can't even count. Do the practice problems on his website, show him that you are trying and odds are you will at least pass.
He is a very caring professor if u struggle go see him during office hours. Highly recommend but organic chem is hard so u have to try hard not to fall behind.
Patrick is a great prof, he is funny and helps you out outside of class. He does provide with many materials for you to prepare for the tests. He tries his best for you to understand the materials 100%. The tests can be confusing sometimes. Overall, he is one of the nicest profs ever!!!
Does his best to teach and to help you understand the material of lectures.
overall decent prof. lots of writing in class and doesn't post notes online, uses board. tests are usually way harder than the practice questions he does in class. always available during his office hours and replies to email very quick. answers questions to the best of his ability. probably would take again if no other prof available.
Patrick is a great professor - his lectures are clear and he's always available to help. The exams can be challenging, but attending class and using study aids like unstuck ai make a big difference. Overall, a rewarding experience.
As straightforward as it gets. His practice tests are very similar to the actual tests. Just do the worksheets, attend class, and review the material given to you. His lectures don't contain slides so you're supposed to copy everything down as he teaches. For that reason, try not to miss out on classes.
The course itself felt like an extension from high school chemistry. His notes and example problems are all done on a whiteboard in class, so attending lecture is very well mandatory. He's pretty upbeat for an 8am class and will crack jokes throughout lecture. His tests are similar to the ones on his website except for the final which very hard.
Very funny, approachable professor. Tests are fair as long as you study.
Tests are nothing like homework or prep tests
