Makes you feel awkward in class by constantly laughing at his own jokes about history. Thinks he is smarter than you and will let you know it. For a good grade on the homework it will take multiple hours, but some weeks he will just take it as a participation grade without telling you. Takes attendance everyday for a grade, no matter class time.
He is sarcastic and that can lead to confusion. There is a lot of homework that really affects your grade (it's worth 30%) and its graded for content very strictly, basically if it's not perfect you fail. A lot of reading. He was also rude to me in emails and spoke down to me when I asked basic questions. I'm good at history, but I almost failed.
As a student athlete, I had to catch up with all my assignments, it was the hardest thing that I have ever had to do. Would not suggest athletes taking this class in season.
Hard as all get out do not take
Hightower is dry and sarcastic. When you ask him genuine questions about the content, he speaks down to you as if you're incompetent and doesn't ever directly answer your questions. His classes are almost unbearable because he only uses lectures for his teaching style. All other classwork and assignments are online, which makes it easier to pass.
While nobody else seems to like Prof. Hightower, this was my favorite I've taken so far. Online essays make it easier to do it on your own time.
No one should like him the way he treats his students he creates his questions so confusing you really aren't sure what the answer is I had to withdraw because how hard he was and was unwilling to help gave me the college was made for people to fail
Extremely rude and untimely. Disorganized and blames it on the students. Definitely a tough teacher, if you have this class DROP IT
Professor Hightower was one of the best professors I've had. As long as you pay attention in lecture, do the reading and the online quizzes, then it should be an easy A. Sure the lectures are a little dry, but Hightower knows what he's talking about. Just make sure you do the reading and you'll pass all of the quizzes. 10/10 recommend.
This class is not difficult as long as you do the work. Professor Hightower grades fairly and although it is a lot of work, it isn't bad if you keep up with it. His lectures are not very interesting and it is hard to stay focused, but he knows what he is talking about and he will answer any questions you ask him. Overall, he isn't the worst.
Not a very hard class. However, there was a LOT of reading. All tests and quizzes are online and multiple-choice. The midterm and final, however, have an argument portion. He does offer an extra credit opportunity. Uses a point scale for grading, so if you have a 900 before the final, you dont have to submit it.
-Lectures aren't the most amazing/entertaining, but paying attention is rewarding during multi-choice part of the midterm and final exam -Uses a point system, which is great for calculating your grade. Once you reach 900 points, you can basically stop attending the course because you reached an A in the course. -Is caring and considerate
He is hands down the worst professor I have taken in an online class. I will spend hours doing my discussion posts, and I will barely make above a 50. We had a proctored test over the constitution, and he was asking questions about specific sections in the articles, so basically if you didn't memorize the entire thing, you failed. DO NOT TAKE!
Easy if you pay attention and do well on quizzes. Failed my midterm and didn't take half the final and still made an A. He is also very passionate about what he teaches which is very nice.
he is one of the greatest men I have ever met, I hope I get to learn from him once again due to his incredible knowledge of the subject and passion for every one of his students.
Tough grader for writing parts but still an easy A because all the quizzes/tests are online and most of the answers are on Quizlet.
I took him last year as a lecture class and as long as you went to class it was an easy A, I did not even have to take the final. I thought taking his online class would be about the same but as a class not required for my major it is the hardest class I have taken. I never pass the discussion post, take him in person, NOT online.
Patrick Hightower is probably the worst professor that I have ever taken. I took both his in person lecture and online class and they were both awful. His lecture is extremely boring and his online class is almost impossible to make an A in. I could spend hours on a discussion post and still make a 60. Do yourself a favor and avoid this class.
Overall a good professor but he does grade certain things tough. I hardly tried got a bunch of zeros and still got a C if you try a little a high B or an A shouldnt be too hard
Not the greatest experience. All lectures contain vague slides with little to no note-taking points. Most of the lecture is him talking, and it's hard to determine what he says is worth notating or not. Lectures are NOT well structured. Important assignments are explained only once in class, so if you skip even once, just forget it and take the W.
At the beginning he seemed and acted like he was an easy A teacher but hes not. He has super super specific requirements for ALL his assignments and if you dont do EVERYTHING to his liking you get major points off. Id sit down spending over 2 hours on a project and still get a B bc of something small.
Hightower was a good professor at the beginning of the semester but became harder near the end. He does not make things clear off the bat or even in his syllabus because I would have to ask him 20 times about something before truly understanding what he wanted. For someone who does not study History and needs an easy A this is not a good class.
This class has a lot of content. It definitely was a little overwhelming. The tests weren't exactly easy. There were some extra credit opportunities. It just felt like we needed to know everything in order to do well on the tests. I had a B all semester but the final brought me down to a C. I asked for help and he said no so. An OK class/experience
Literally do not take this professor. His lectures are off-topic all the time and nothing he says is actually on the test. The chapters he has you read are really long and as far as I can tell, the reading doesn't help much. He basically spends the whole class talking about history like it's coffee talk. Nothing useful.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! GPA KILLER FOR SURE! His class lectures are always off topic and you literally don't learn anything in his class. The Powerpoint doesn't help and he basis a lot of his stuff off of other resources instead of teaching it. Also his discussion post are ridiculous and its very hard to get a 100 on them. WORST TEACHER!!
Lots of reading lecture every class If you do all the reading, watch all the crash courses, take lecture notes you'll do great If you are lazy like me and don't read or do the notes you might pass but it will be hard doesn't take attendance but go to class if you want a good grade
take really good notes because majority of the test questions come from what he said not what was on the powerpoint. he assigned a-lot of reading and videos outside of class but i didnt do it every week and was fine. make friends and make a doc of the quiz questions because he uses a-lot of the same questions.
His lectures are not related to the test whatsoever, but you still are required to attend class. The tests are very, very difficult. He also is very passionate about history, and sometimes he yells really loud in class when having a discussion. Overall, I would never take him again. He has been a pretty bad professor, and he is very apathetic.
This is probably the hardest History class I have taken so far. Hightower drones on all class and rarely says anything important. His lectures don't really corelate with the tests, and the tests are HARD. The rest of the class is relatively easy though. Lots of textbook reading and an overall mediocre class.
Professor Hightower talks forever and ever during class. I actually wore my AirPods the entire class and I still made a high B in the class. The lecture don't relate to anything on the tests, the tests are actually very hard and you need to read the textbook in order to be prepared. Also you grade builds and it becomes very stressful.
Do not ever take this professor. There is a ton of notes and a ton of crash course videos to watch weekly. He lectures almost everyday and his powerpoints have nothing to do with his lecture. The tests are impossible and ask specific questions from videos and lectures, they also include extremely difficult short answer questions. DO NOT TAKE!
I didn't really prioritize this class and I still finished with an A. All the quizzes and tests are open note online and he is fairly generous with extra credit. He curved 2 of the tests and gave a little bit of extra credit on top of that. I definitely slacked on the reading but it didn't effect my grade too much. His lectures were very boring.
Mr. Hightower was an average teacher. I would rate his class higher if the only material we had to pull from was lecture but instead for each chapter we needed to read a textbook, take notes on lectures, and watch a few videos. A lot to juggle. Not many problems but if he makes a mistake giving instructions it will be the class' fault, not his.
Do not take him if you can't perform on a 5 question quiz. He is an awful grader and his quizzes are impossible. You have to do everything on the syllabus to do well in his class which is nearly impossible.
The only thing that saved me from failing was quizlet.
Professor Hightower is extremely smart, don’t get me wrong, but he lectures the entire hour & 15 minutes every. single. class. His tests have a few discussion questions, which he grades very hard on. He’s not the worst teacher, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
His lectures never relate to anything on the test. He is very nice. I just do not agree with his teaching style.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Lectures were terrifyingly long! attendance was apart of the grade! HEAVY HEAVY grader! Why would you teach history and not have it in chronological order ???? Lectures were wayyyy behind quizzes and tests! would never ever take again
Professor Hightower's class was very lecture heavy and had a quiz due once a week. There's an online textbook to go with the course and he is VERY harsh on grading the tests short answer questions.
Very much lecture and reading based with a lot of participation involved but he is very helpful and willing!
He's a great person, But I would suggest taking another Professor. His whole class just felt like a bunch of rambling to me, and you have to be able to be good at tests since that's all that made your grade. His textbook is online, so while you don't have to buy a hard copy, you cant.
Hightower made learning the subject (In class atleast) very interesting and fun. He assigns a lot of reading, so be prepared for that. He is pretty forgiving on grading, and willing to talk about grades outside class. 7/10, would take again.
a nice guy but class felt insanely hard. grade is composed of 4 open-note tests, making tests 80% of your grade. he assigns them over a weekend, giving you 2 hours to take it. i got good grades, but it required me to spend hours in the textbook/crash course videos to succeed. this was my hardest class of the semester + i was in a&p at the same time
excruciatingly boring class. like painfully boring. he just talks for an hour and 15 with no room for class participation but still grades on participation. hardest grader for an intro u.s. history class, and tests are extremely hard. dont take
Professor Hightower was good at his job and knew a lot about what he was teaching. He doesn't seem extremely passionate about his job, but tries his best to make class interesting. I had the 1hr15min lecture period with him which made it difficult to stay engaged for the whole lecture but that wasn't really his fault.
His tests are very hard and take hours to complete. Attendance is not required and it was a waste of time to go. He would get off topic and start talking about random stuff and on Thursday's we would do a group discussion which would last the entire class and no one would have time to present what their group came up with.
Prof Hightower is a good professor. He has good lectures and wants you to participate. we had 3 tests, a couple of reading reflections, a map test, and a final presentation. He is super understanding and is willing to work with you to help you succeed!
The lectures were kind of boring but he was funny. Some days he will lecture and other days you will work in a group in class to complete an assignment. I don't understand the hate.
His lectures are extremely boring and he makes jokes that only he laughs at. He test are open note, but every question is "pick the best answer" so the test are very difficult. I would NEVER take his class again. He grades very harsh on every assignment. I have like a month left of classes and still don't know my actual grade. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Sweet guy and all, but he should NOT be allowed to teach. The grade-book for him is some foolish 1,000 point system and you have NO idea what your grade is until the class is over. AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN, This system has put me in so much duress. YOU WILL NOT KNOW YOUR GRADE, AND YOU WILL FAIL THE TESTS, which are HARD.
DO NOT TAKE! He grades extremely harsh and doesn't give feedback most of the time. He is extremely boring and he makes jokes that only he laughs at. I wish I would've taken a different professor. You also won't know your grade until there is like 2 weeks left in the semester. Do yourself a favor and please don't take him.
Do not take him. On his assignments he gives very specific instructions and if you don't do one thing he says, you get so many points taken off. This class is not an easy A class like he makes it seem at the beginning of the year. He makes this class just as hard as my A&P class. I wish someone would have told me how bad he was so I could drop it.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! You won't know your grade until the very end of the class because he puts zeros in for assignments you haven't done. This class is supposed to be an intro class and he treats it like an honor class. I honestly don't know how he is still allowed to teach. He is a horrible teacher, do not take him!
If you have this class drop it! Take it online or something. During this class I feel like professor Hightower wants his students to fail. He grades very harsh and doesn't give feedback. He takes off a lot of points if you do one thing wrong. He should've honestly picked a different career. I literally can't stand him or his class. DROP!
Don't put yourself through this class!
HORRIBLE! Is the only word to describe this professor. His lectures are so boring and the test have nothing to do with his lectures.
If you have professor Hightower... RUN!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. He should be FIRED for the grading system he uses, what a joke. These tests also have nothing to do with the material. Avoid him like your life depends on it, because it does.
I mean it ain't that bad. Tests are online. The grading system is odd but it's easy to calculate what you would need on certain assignments to get up to an A. Grade rests on Tests for the most part.
I have wanted to be a high school US History teacher since I was in 8th grade. I changed my major after this class. I have made an A+ in every history class I have ever been in, I have a failing grade atm. He is so hard. I think I know the material and then fail the test. They have nothing to do with the lecture or textbook. Run
Not the best teacher out there. Tests are @ home/open note, which is convenient, but questions are difficult. Weekly assignments are due every week, requires heavy reading. Lectures AREN'T engaging at all, basically talks nonstop at this point. Tuesdays are lecture. Thursdays are group work, which he doesnt grade fairly. Grading system is horrific.
ALSO DOES NOT GIVE ANY EXTRA CREDIT
Easy timed open notes exams. You can use the internet, but questions can be from lectures and crash course videos. No final; it is a regular exam. Tues.- lectures/Thurs.-discussions (your group will answer one question). Tough grader on two essays. It's a super easy class; I never read nor paid attention. Easy A! (Spring 2023)
This professor is awesome! He is very passionate about history so if you are not someone who is able to sit and only listen to lecture (very few words per slide) I would not recommend him. He loves teaching (very obvious from the start) and he grades his class in a way where is nearly impossible to do worse than a B. Take him for history!
BORING, sorry but so boring. All he does in lecture and yap. He is kind but not worth going to class.
US History I Fall 2024. Good lectures and was very funny but it's super boring. not worth going to class. All tests were online but may be switched because some people were cheating and got caught. Long ass textbook to read each week but it was free. great at answering questions and loves to go on tangents.
Patrick Hightower was a pretty decent US History teacher. I didn't particularly like how his entire grade was put into four different tests and two intro assignments, but they were pretty easy as they were all online. You'll have to do a lot of reading in is class though and attend every lecture to stay on top of it.
Free textbook online. Took a gamble taking the class and was the only B in my grade. Good guy who rambles a lot but helpful. He is a tough/weird grader on his FRQ. You have to be elaborate on your answers to receive all credit, which is annoying if you don't add the littlest thing. Gives extra credit and tests are open book. Will drop lowest grade.
Not a fan. Lectures are fruitless as he gets off topic easily- it felt pointless to even go to class. He is also very harsh on grading extra credit. Tests are difficult. When i went to his office hours he told me he wouldn't talk about anything relating to class or the readings but if i wanted to "talk about something else" he would.
Do not take him. He talks and talks and does not review for the tests. His tests are extremely hard and there no easy way to prepare for them because they are over 3-4 chapters. He does give a lot of extra credit but they are designed to make students not want to do it. The extra credit is extremely hard and very tedious.
god this man just would not shut up. all he does is yap.his powerpoints r dogwater. not enough information and doesn't coordinate well with teachings. if he makes you watch crash course videos outside of class, watch them cuz he does put that on the test sometimes. does do extra credit, but it only counts if u do it based on his expectations..
Professor Hightower was okay. He never responded to any of my emails. Very lecture heavy and boring unless you enjoy the subject. Only graded on 4 total tests, but weekly extra credit takes place if you attend classes on Thursdays. Does not use a proctor app for tests. Wouldn't personally take him again.
Lectures were incredibly boring and tedious, and I am someone who enjoys lectures. Entire grade rests on 4 tests and 2 minor intro assignments. The tests focus on the most obscure details or even subjective opinions. If you don't read before the test (which he will never remind you to do) you're screwed. He acts like it's the most important class.
he really is a nice guy, but that's all he has going for him. only grades were four tests, which are very difficult, and two intro assignments. he gives extra credit, but it is hard and very specific. his slides have very little notes and he tends to go on and on without really saying anything and you don't know what to put. good guy, bad teacher.
This professor has to have tenure. For your own sanity and gpa, do NOT NOT NOT take his class. He goes on too many tangents, so that half the time what he is yapping about is not relevant to ANY test material. He talks about his own personal life too much, and his powerpoint's are no help whatsoever. I am learning nothing from this class.
He only grades with 4 tests which are hard and ap exam style which makes it impossible to actually get higher than a C on the test. THIS CLASS WILL RUIN YOUR GPA. Lectures are boring. Tests cover 4 chapters and a bunch of crash course videos and extra sources which are hard to keep up if you procrastinate. He is a nice person but overall bad class.
I'm sorry but this teacher was by far one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He assigns LOADS of reading and doesn't give any direction on how to study for his tests. He has NO assignments, NO study guides and only grades tests/attendance. He offers some extra credit, but not enough to salvage a failing grade. ALL he does is lecture DON'T take.
Genuinely the WORST professor I have ever had in my entire life. Listen to me and everyone else when I tell you that this man is impossible to please, and does not belong in a classroom. History is clearly a hobby of his but that doesn't mean he should teach it. Half the class withdrew during midterms because everyone failed.
Don't waste your time in his class I wish Id dropped the first week. He claims you'll have to retake history with him anyway but that's a lie my advisor showed me plenty of other options with different teachers. Weve asked him numerous times for other assignments to help with our grades but he never says yes and justifies why its better he doesnt.
Grade depends on your test score. Not really any assignments to help you study for exams.
get ready to read that text book because I read it the test were not like the note class average was terrible also don't underestimate his rating because I said he won't be that bad I was wrong. he's a great person but his teaching is terrible and i like history and he made me not like it
0/10 terrible. his class lectures made absolutely no sense even when you were trying to follow. he didnt give an overview of what we were discussing and jumped all around and just expected you to understand. he doesnt give you a study guide or any information over what the test is and claims that everything within the chapters is testable.
If you thrive on lecture-based learning and test-heavy classes, you'll do great here. The entire grade is based on four tests, with only about four assignments total during the semester. He rarely gives extra credit, so you really have to stay on top of the material and study consistently.
Worst teacher ever. He was no help whatsoever. After the first test half of the class dropped, one of the questions on the test was talking about what figurine he had in his office hours. He would say "this isn't on the test" and then go on a tangent about it for 10 minutes. It was non stop yap.
He is the worst teacher I have EVER had. His lectures all of class start to finish for 1 hour and 15 minutes and it has nothing to do with the exams. The only graded assignments are his exams plus one extra assignment we had to beg him to give us. He gives so much homework per exam that ALSO have NOTHING to do with the exam. 10/10 do NOT RECOMMEND!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. i've never in my life experienced a professor as bad as he is. PLEASE drop the first week or you're screwed. went to his office hours and poured my heart out to him how i'm not succeeding in his class and his response was "well is that all you have for me?" I said "yes" and he said "okay have a good day." ZERO help at all. DROP
Lectures have nothing to do with the test. Book has barely anything to do with the test. Anything he puts on d2L has nothing to do with the test. He told us week 1 that we need to read the textbook at least 8 hours a week to even do decent in the class, I should've known to drop it right then. Everything he does is to try and tank your grade.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I would not wish this class upon anyone. The tests have nothing to do with lectures. You have to read for HOURS! Even if you study and do everything he says his tests are IMPOSSIBLE to pass. I wish I had dropped the class sooner. He said that it was expected to at LEAST spend 8 hours studying a week to just pass... absolutely not.
I regret not dropping his class. You would think since we're taught US history throughout grade school this course would be an easy A.. but it's more like an AP style course. The tests consist of several chapters worth of material, extra readings with that, lecture notes and Crash Course video information. This class is not worth your time.
