Very in-depth lectures that address a lot of material but are done in the funniest way possible. I was nervous about this class but now I'm so happy I took it, such an awesome professor!

You can tell he really enjoys the material he teaches which makes it a lot more interesting to learn. Easy tests as long you study the main events and people he goes over in class.

I have taken a lot of History classes but Dr. Hurley is the best! Very entertaining during lectures and tests were very straight forward. As long as you go to lecture ready to learn, you will do great!

Patrick is an amazing teacher and humorous guy. He's area of expertise is Roman History but he proved to be very knowledgeable in all areas in this world history course. I've taken a lot of history courses and I enjoyed his class most by far. I look forward to taking him again in future classes!

It's evident that Dr. Hurley really enjoys his job. My entire class made A's on the first exam, and he gives an insane amount of extra credit. Exams are fairly easy if you listen in lecture and do a moderate amount of studying beforehand. Puts his lectures online, but class is actually enjoyable.

I loved this class! You have to attend, but for a history class it was relatively easy. The tests are essay style, but he is so helpful with what you should study and giving extra credit. Everyone in our class made an A on the first test. I would definitely suggest taking him! Plus he is a great guy and cares about his students

Dr. Hurley is easily one of the best professors I have had in three years at Alabama, and most certainly the funniest lecturer. I had no previous interest in the ancient world and he managed to make it thoroughly entertaining (and I learned a lot as a result).

Great teacher, hilarious guy. He makes his lectures VERY entertaining, and he provides a text format of every lecture. Tests are great, gives you tons of options for 6-10 sentence short answer response (you only have to choose 5). He give so you several essay questions to choose from too, and tells them to you a week before the test

Easily my favorite teacher in college so far. His lectures are HILARIOUS. He obviously loves what he teaches, but understands that we may not, so he tries his best to make it interesting. He gives a ton of extra credit on tests. I'm not a history major, but I might take another class just to have him as a teacher again. He made me love history.

The funniest guy I've ever met. The class was boring, but I always looked forward to going because I never knew what was gonna come out of his mouth. It was a crazy ride listening to him every day. Okay, this guy is great. I hate history but his lectures are interesting and funny. The best part is that the class is an easy A. He gives you the essay prompts before the test and then you choose which to answer on the exam, plus there is an entire extra credit section. I got 142% on the first exam. Minimal homework, barely read the book at all.

Professor Hurley is my favorite professor ever. I'm in my second class with him this semester, and I hope to get in another next semester. He is a dork in the best possible way, and tells great stories that go with what he is teaching. Straight lecture, but tests come directly from the lectures.

There were 4 exams that were given, all of which were not cumulative. Each exam you had a chance to fill out extra credit and he gives you an amazing study guide before the exam that gives you everything you need to know for the tests. He is a great teacher with a terrific sense of humor and really cares about his student's grades.

Professor Hurley was so entertaining while he was lecturing. The amount of extra credit he gave was so helpful. There was minimal homework (only a short paper every other week) and he gave study guides that prepared me very well for each (non-cumulative test). I highly recommend taking his class.

The best professor at UA, hands down. He has the best sense of humor of any teacher I've ever had, and he keeps the lectures entertaining but still very enlightening. The exams are not easy, but there are plenty of opportunities to earn EC. Dr. Hurley has the strongest recommendation I've ever given. Take him if you get the chance.

Even if you are not a history major, YOU NEED TO TAKE HURLEY! He is by far one of the best professors on campus. His lectures are very enjoyable and interesting. His exams are easy as long as you study, and gives a lot of extra credit too! All around awesome guy

Dr. Hurley was an AMAZING professor. He tests consist of basically regurgitating the information you learned in class and he gives you soooo much extra credit. The first test we took one girl got 170%. I got an 86% and I studied for like 10 minutes. The information is hard to understand and boring but Hurley makes it enjoyable to go to class.

If you can take this professor 10000% do it. He gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit as long as you put in slight effort you'll get an A. I got a 125% on my first exam. He's a super history nerd but it makes his lectures HILARIOUS because he acts out "conversations". I would have him teach me every class ever if I could.

He acts out scenes in history and makes you experience history like it's right in front of you. Take his classes!

Dr. Hurley is amazing! He is hilarious and incredibly passionate about the topics he lectures on. On top of that, he gives so much extra credit, and it all rolls over if you get above a 100. I walked into the final with 60 points already. I 100% recommend taking any class he teaches because he is amazing.

Dr. Hurley is really nice, and his class is really easy. He started off the semester taking attendance, but stopped taking it part of the way through - I think because he didn't want to have to fail anybody. He is really passionate about what he's teaching and really wants you to do well in his course and learn the material.

Dr. Hurley is my favorite professor at the University. His lectures are more like him just telling stories. He really cares about what he is teaching and the students. He goes out of his way to make sure no one fails. He only gives essay tests and one or two essays but you have half the semester to write the essay. Take him if you get a chance!

Dr. Hurley is an amazing and dynamic professor. For his upper level history courses, you take a midterm, final, and write two papers. Not too much work, but a very interesting and funny class. He acts out historical events for you and makes amazing references. Take his class if you can.

Dr. Hurley is a true "bae" of a professor. His lower division courses are easy A's, so long as you attend lectures (which are hilarious). Tests are wholly based on them, so no need to buy the book. You have the entire term to write your paper (seriously, just turn something in). He's adorable and "acts" out history in his lectures. Take him.

His lectures are entertaining and memorable, he's hilarious, his tests are short answer/essay based but he offers a good amount of extra credit in case you miss some points on the terms. 100% recommend, he's kinda nerdy but really nice and funny.

super funny! offers so much extra credit it's actually a little alarming? his lectures are interesting, especially if you take him for Roman history since that's his area of study. BAD jokes but all to help you remember. literally regurgitate what he says in class and get over a 100 on all your tests. 1 paper for the class but SUPER EASY.

Dr. Hurley is an incredibly engaging professor. His lectures are dense, but, he makes an effort to make them memorable. To that extent, go to class and you will be well prepared for his exams! He sets clear grading criteria for the papers and his exams are straight forward. I would highly recommend Dr. Hurley.

I love going to this class. the lectures are always entertaining. the notes are all done from listening to him talk. there is not much homework except for a biweekly assignment. would definitely recommend.

First upper level history I had taken; easier than expected. You'll learn a lot if you actually pay attention, but lectures are very dense and that makes it easy to accidentally zone out and miss something.

This will be the easiest professor you ever take in the department if you take advantage of the opportunities he gives you. The extra credit on the exams makes it almost impossible to not get an A. 3 Homework assignments all semester. Class material is dense but he makes it more palatable.

Patrick is an interesting character. He says some odd stuff during class, but it's clear he's interested in the content he's talking about. His exams are super easy, and as long as you pay attention and study his lectures (Which get posted online!), then you'll be fine. He also has extra credit on his exams which will help a LOT.

3 exams and 3 HW the entire semester. Lots of extra credit is offered, so it makes the class an easy A. He is so funny and makes learning the history memorable and enjoyable. Okay, his syllabus scared the hell out of me, not going to lie. But he is AMAZING! He knows his stuff, and is literally a method actor in class. Cannot imagine having to listen to a 75 minute HY lecture without his jokes and personality! Attendance is a MUST. 10/10 would recommend

Really great if you need an easy history course. He posts lecture notes online that are almost word for word what he says in class. He really expects you to know every date and name though. The tests are easy if you spend an hour or two studying. Gives PLENTY of opportunity for extra credit on the tests. You only have two classes that you can miss

Patrick is a great teacher and lectures are NOT boring! Take him, but don't expect it to be a breeze. Had to work hard for my A. There is ALOT of material to study for the tests. Start studying before the last minute. Gives tons of extra credit questions on tests which helps. HW due once every 2 weeks, 1 research paper due at the end of the term.

TAKE HIM FOR WORLD HISTORY!! I dont really like history but did so well in his class. Hes a great teacher & keeps his lectures interesting. Our TA Dan was super cool too. He gives so much extra credit. Study a little & youll do well.

Literally funniest prof I've had. Class is always super interesting and relatively easy. His tests are weird at first, but once you take one, you will instantly know how to do super well on the next one. Gives out ridiculous amounts of extra credit, it's really really hard to fail a Hurley class.

His class is one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. He is a conservative and sometimes that popped through in his history lectures but also he is an EASY A+. Definitely take the class if you can stomach cringy jokes/lectures for an A+.

I seriously hate History, but he made it so fun! This is one of my best grades for the semester and that never happens! I would not suggest anyone else for World History. The lectures are kind of long, but I was always pretty entertained! He makes it very hard to do poorly with all the extra credit. Definitely take him!!

Gives tons of extra points. I did okay on all three of my exams and got at least a 110 on each of them. Finished the semester with a 115/100 even with a 0 on an assignment I had a 0 on. Don't expect any of your emails to get replies, but if you do your work right the first time, you won't have a reason to email him.

Even though class was often streamed, Dr. Hurley still provided quality lectures, that were not only fascinating, but also amusing. Tests always cover material that is only discussed in class, and there is a solid amount of extra credit available. Work on the research papers in advance, and this will be a fun, stress free class.

I'm a HY major and Hurley is the best I've had! He really knows his stuff and adds funny commentary into all his lectures (they're never boring) He is a very fair grader and his test are mainly ID and essay based. Even if you dread HY I promise you will enjoy him, everyone does. I recommend his HY 118 class to anyone needing a general HY class.

Dr. Hurley is hilarious! I was a little nervous to take an honors history course because I'm not the biggest fan of the subject, but his lectures are really funny and super interesting. As long as you go to class, study for the tests the night before, and listen you will get an A+. He is also so fair with extra credit.

Here is the thing. Hurley is easily the best for any kind of ancient or world history. His Western Civ is great. This class is great. The issue is World History is so big it requires a TA. Now, for many this class is unavoidable. If it is an option, just beware a TA determines your grades. Awesome no-TA alternatives are J Alexander and J Merritt.

I've never enjoyed history, and I really dreaded having to take it in college. However, Hurley's class was one of the best I've taken at UA. His lectures are very entertaining and he makes them easy to remember. He makes it VERY clear what will be on each exam, he is an easy grader, and there is plenty of opportunity for extra credit.

I love him!! I took his HY 117 class last semester and changed my major to history. I plan to take any class I can with him. He makes lecture so fun, and is so passionate about what he is teaching. The assignments and tests are also super easy. The TA was a bit much though, he loves to blow up your email.

Patrick Hurley's lectures are some of the most engaging lectures I have ever intended. He is witty, very knowledgeable of the material and wants to help students learn. He is a fairly lenient grader but you do need to attend class to do well on the tests (you'll probably want to go anyway). Best History Professor. Best History Teacher.

Hurley is the best and most engaging professor I have had gen eds wise at UA. Lots of writing between primary source assignments, exams, and the final research paper, but he is very lenient with grading. While he is lecture heavy, they are never uninteresting. If you need some history credits, take Hurley.

I took HY 105 with Hurley last semester and liked him so much that I took him again for 106. Very easy tests as long as you pay attention, and he gives a lot of extra credit. Final paper is long but he does not grade harshly on any assignments. Really funny guy with interesting lectures.

Dr. Hurley is extremely interesting and has a vast wealth of knowledge, he is also super funny and laid-back, however, his lectures are not for the faint of heart. They are extremely dense and presented without slides so paying attention can be a challenge. Make pals in the class and prepare to share lecture notes! Otherwise, enjoy!

Lectures are very interesting. Not much information is given on what will be on the test but with the discussion post and primary source assignments, main ideas can be easily identified. Outside of the 3 tests, there are only 2 discussions and 3 primary source assignments. The recitation class on Friday was canceled.

Dr Hurley is amazing. He is hilarious and managed to tell history as a narriative instead of just reading off a powerpoint. As he says, his jokes are cringe, BUT the cringe helps you remember the material, which is actually very true. Hurley is a SUPER easy grader, it's very easy to get an A in his class because of the way the tests are structured.

Professor Hurley wants you to pass his class and will do anything to make sure you are able to pass. The tests are written, but you can get so much extra credit on the tests. During lecture he talks really fast so it can be hard to follow along if you are taking notes, but he posts his lecture scripts so you can take notes and study later.

Makes history very easy to understand. Tests are easy and you can often get lots of easy extra credit. Is a lecture heavy but you can ready the script for the lectures that he posts online if you get confused. One of the best history classes I have had.

Professor Hurley's lectures are a blast - he makes history come alive with his witty humor and engaging storytelling. While attendance is mandatory, the tests are pretty straightforward, and unstuck study is a great study aid alongside the free textbook.

Usually just him lecturing, which is pretty easy to follow, along with his impressions of historical figures. Most tests he gives you a pretty clear list of the things you should be prepared for, including a list of essay questions. Very understanding grader too.

Doctor Hurley has the personality of a 1980s/1990s sitcom character, but he is a very good professor. His lectures are very engaging and is really passionate about what he teaches. His tests are essay based, but they are also very easy and offer a ton of extra credit.

I had Dr. Hurley for HY105, he was by far one of the best history teachers that I have ever had. He truly likes his job and makes class very interesting to hear with comical references on history. There is not an insane number of assignments but there are primary source assignments, a research paper and 3 test. Just do the work, it's easy to pass.
