He's very nice, but does move very fast through lecture. All of his tests are completely multiple choice and HW is online. He is willing to help after class and during office hours. Book is required
Absolutely worst professor I have EVER had. I tried speaking with him briefly during his office hours. He was not helpful at all. He also does not teach the material well at all. He teaches all over the place and confuses himself generally. I am a science major and enjoy it but he is awful. Hopefully he will not be allowed to teach again.
absolute worst professor ever! it's his first year teaching and when i went in for office hours, his exact statement on making a review for the test was "I want to avoid teaching to the test." what else are you teaching for!?
By far the WORST teacher ever. It's his first year to ever teach and he has no clue what he is doing. He does everything in his head and does not take time to show it to the class. Don't even consider him for 1301, it's supposed to help you for 1307 but in this case taking 1307 would be better off instead.
He is all over the place. Lectures are pointless. He reads all of his material from a powerpoint on blackboard, which is not helpful at all. He seems very introverted; first year teaching. I personally would not recommend this professor to anyone.
One of the worst professors I have taken, he completely ruins chemistry. I stopped going to his class and just read from the book and did the online OWL homework, it was easier to understand.
Horrible teacher. He reads straight of power point slides which are already not useful. It is hard for him to clarify in a helpful manner even in one on one instruction.
Where do I begin? The first day he ever taught, he even told us that he didn't want to teach. I attended the class and my grades went downhill. I started staying home and doing the online homework. Grades went up a bit. This class isn't even Chemistry. Completely ruined it for me. My major is Pharmacy, but this class did not help me whatsoever.
I went to every class in the beginning but quickly figured out that all he was doing was reading off PowerPoint slides to us, which I can do on my own. The only reason I made it through the class was by Doing the homework on my own and teaching myself. He gets mixed up a lot and confuses his students and can't answer our questions half the time.
Dr. Mclaurin is a new professor and really does care. You must go to every class and ask questions when you do not understand. He doesn't fully rely on powerpoints so attendance is a must.An "A" is possible in this class. He is very helpful during office hours and will take time to guide you through homework.
Horrible, awful professor. I stopped going to lecture halfway through the semester because he confused me way more than he helped. I spent the semester learning straight from the textbook and scored significantly higher on the exams. He honestly just doesn't care when he teaches. The only plus is the reviews are the exact same as the test.
He's definitely not the best teacher you'll ever have but he's not the worst. He genuinely wants to see you do well in his class. He gave out practice tests before most of the exams that helped a lot. I got an A but not without great effort. Go to SI sessions, Miguel is awesome. very helpful.
Chem 2 is a very tough class but this professor is willing to help students that at least try. Do the homework and you will be fine for the exams.
Great professor! He went above and beyond what I expected from a professor. Constantly sent emails updating class info, test prep, etc. I would definitely take him again for another class. It's a difficult class, but he will help you if needed!!
Second time taking this class and I wish I would've taken him the first time, there is homework but it is what helps you pass the class.
Just like any Chemistry Class. I had him for Chem 1 which he never taught before and I'm pretty sure he was better than the other teachers who taught it for years. He hand writes his notes on the board and always takes the time to email you back if you have a question. And he is always trying to make jokes and loves it when you laugh! Overall great
This was by far the hardest class Ive taken. He is a good guy and is funny in class, but he is not the greatest teacher, if you ask for help he is there for you. Do ALL the homework and you will do fine in the class.
WORST class I have ever taken! Despite a HUGE curve in the end, I made a C in a freshman class. I aced one of the hardest classes in my degree plan but again, almost failed chemistry! The tests are VERY difficult as they are multiple choice. No matter what way you solve the problem, that answer will be in one of your choices!
I would not recommend this professor if you are looking for a teacher that gets to the point and teaches what you need to know for his exams. Reading will be beneficial even if you attend lecture as he uses white board and gets a little crazy in his explanations. SI is a must because SI leaders generally make the material more easy to grasp.
I loved his class, he made things easy to understand and I liked that he actually used the white board, and didn't just read off a powerpoint. I would take his class again.
He's really cool, he tries to make class fun and interesting. He takes attendance every day. He is very clear in his lectures, and he works a lot of examples on the whiteboard instead of using the slides. He is really helpful too, you just have too show interest.
I was retaking this class and still getting bad grades. I went to talk to him during office hours and he was very understanding and helped me with homework and even gave the whole class extra credit homework assignments so i would make the homework requirement! very nice and understanding!
I took his class in order to get ready for chem 1307. I didn't expect to understand everything in science classes so his hw came to place to make me had to study and the questions he assigned were to walk you through step by step. He was trying to make the 3rd and finals easy enough that you could do really good as long as you studied.
He's improved a lot from what I have heard in past. Attendance is for a grade. Do the homework on time. Tests aren't easy, but homework is hard so it prepares you for it. He grades on a bit of a curve, so that helps. He's fair overall, explains concepts well, and will work with you if you need help.
McLaurin teaches the class like it's calc. and he seems to assume that everyone has taken at least calc. one. The concepts of chemistry are irrelevant for his class, If you can do the math that's all that matters. This is for all intents and purposes a math class.
Attendance is for a grade. Will not curve, average test grades are a 50% and he is okay with it. If you read the book, and take good notes in lectures then you can pass. Doesn't use powerpoint so paying attention to what he says matters.
Didn't have a good experience with him. The test averages are so low to the point where he had to give partial credit for almost right answers. Attendance is a grade and if you get the question wrong its like you didn't even show up to class. When asking him what I could do to improve my test scores he didn't have anything encouraging or helpful.
McLaurin is a great professor for chemistry! His lectures were clear and even entertaining. He tells corny jokes here and there, but I thought they were cute! Professor McLaurin was nice and easily approachable. I never felt intimidated asking for help. Only drawback about his class is that attendance is taken for a grade via LearningCatalytics.
Dr. McLaurin is a great professor. He gets a bad rep because of how low his Test Averages are, but it's a CHEMISTRY CLASS!! It isn't supposed to be a cake walk.. If you go to class, work hard on the homework, and go to him for help, you will succeed.
Tests are tough, and he is not a great lecturer. This is basically a math class. It does not matter if you get the concepts you just have to be able to do the math correctly to pass the tests.
The only good thing I can say about McLaurin is that the guy really loves Chemistry. Lectures are very boring and personally it was hard to stay focused. He runs through things very quickly so if you don't keep up, you could be behind the rest of class. I had to refer to the book many times because he makes things too difficult to understand.
Gives a ton of homework, that is for a grade. However his exams do not reflect the homework or class lecture. If it would let me rate him 0's on everything I would but it wouldn't let me.
Great professor if you actually pay attention. Most people I knew slept in the class or partied a lot so they did not know the material form tests. It is not easy but not hard. In order to get ready for tests just read the book and read your notes. There is a lot of homework which does help for practice. Concepts are important!! Good Luck
Tests are super super tough. Study far in advance in order to be prepared. Never went to his office hours so unsure if he is helpful or not. IF YOU DO NOT REMEMBER MATERIAL FOR CHEM 1307, YOU ARE SCREWED.
Amazing professor who is passionate about chemistry. He doesn't make his tests easy and you MUST show up to class and study far in advance. However, if you are struggling he is always there to help in his office hours. And maybe it's just me, but his dad jokes had me cracking up all year long.
Dr. McLaurin was a good professor, he kept lectures entertaining and was willing to answer questions in class and clear up any confusion we had during lectures. He provided reviews and other materials to help us along the way. A lot of homework for this class, but nothing too horrible. Only a handful of assignments were fairly difficult.
He gives homework assignments two three times a week so expect a lot of homework. His lectures are hard to follow because he is all over the place and does not like to follow the textbook. Even if you read the book frontwards and backwards do not expect the test to follow it at all because most of his questions are from lecture. Don't take him!!!!!
I took CHEM 1307: Principles of Chemistry I. Dr. McLaurin was an ok professor to have for lecture. He went over the topics quick and due to the large class size it sometimes was hard to get one on one attention with anyone but the TA.
McLaurin was a good professor. He actually took the time to write his lectures on the whiteboard. He is incredibly passionate about chemsitry and it shows through his teachings. The tests were kinda tough but it just takes preparation. Relatively heavy homework. He is one of the best Chem1307 professors at Tech.
Mclaurin is not a good instructor. Tests are extremely hard and there is a ton of homework in the class which barely prepares you for the tests. Anyone who says he is a good instructor has to already be good at Chemistry and know the material. I highly suggest choosing another instructor who can teach the subject well if you hope to pass the class
A LOT OF HW. Also, he is a doubtable person. you have to self study to pass
Worst teacher I have ever met. He spends more time in class trying to make you laugh than he does teaching. He moves very quickly and his lectures consist of copying his notes onto the board. No help at all and tests are nothing like the lectures. Avoid at all costs and expect lots of homework.
Dr. McLaurin's Chem 1308 is hard, but he is very helpful if you visit him in his office hours and ask him about problems. GO TO SI AND CLASS!! Study and practice the HW to understand the concepts. Test are multi-choice only and he takes attendance by asking questions via an online app. I made an A- after a 5 year hiatus from college and chemistry.
Dr. McLaurin is one of the best professor's I've had a Texas Tech. He wrote all of his lectures on the board. There was a lot of homework, but it was a good way of learning the material. The tests were a little difficult, but can get up to two points extra credit for attending recitation. You could tell he cared about chemistry and the students.
Great Professor. I learned more from his class than chem 1307 and the first time i took 1308. If you go to class and the SI sessions, you will do fine. He will tell you stuff that's on the tests, like certain questions, so pay attention in class.
This class is definitely doable. However, like in all science classes, be prepared to study. I would suggest using a separate notebook for doing the homework and doing practice problems in the book - study and review this notebook three times a week (which is a must imo). Don't let homework pile up on you, start or finish it the day he assigns it!
I found this class quite easy. He writes his lectures on the board and everything you need to know is up there. Obviously do the homework for practice and attend SI. I ended the semester with a 96 and I missed 30% of class. He is so helpful outside of class and is just a great guy. I recommend him and I wish I could take him again.
Best Professor I have had at Tech so far. I don't know why anyone would complain considering that he wrote all notes on the board as he explained them and was very audible.
I hated this class, it was extremely difficult and he doesn't seem to care if you do well in the class. He does send out old tests before each exam so that you have something to study for but they are difficult and not explained well.
I don't really understand the ratings here. If you attend class and write down what is on the board, it should be an easy A or B. If you're good at math, this class is easy. Dr. McLaurin is accessible outside of class and will spend hours answering your questions. Everything you need is on the board. Practice problems are a good idea. Final is hard
He is one of the few professors to truly care for his students. His lectures never fail to entertain. He is hands down my favorite professor.
His lectures were great, helpful, and organized. As long as you go to class and pay attention, you'll pass with an easy A. Most of the test problems were similar to examples and every question that was on the test was what he covered in class. Not as many homework as chem 1307 and homework problems were very helpful too.
I really enjoy his classes, he is fun to listen to and keeps the lecture entertaining. Read the assigned readings before class and you will do fine!
For your attendance to count you must work out a problem correctly, 1 mistake and you are counted absent even though you attended class. Others students cheat their way around this. Sends massive E-mail changing and correcting wrong information given prior. Take G. Gellene instead!
Dr Mclaurin hasn't taught in 4 years, but he hasn't lost a beat. He's a great lecturer, he's truly very passionate about chem. He's very accessible outside of class, even offers all day office hours at times and responds readily to emails. While this class is weighted heavily on tests, Dr Mclaurin's fav quote sum it all up, study hard test easy.
I really don't understand why he has so many 5 star ratings. He is very unclear in lecture. If you want to really understand what he's talking about in lecture, you need to go to his office hours, EVERY WEEK. You are one face in a sea of students he does not care about. EXTREME amount of homework and EXTREMELY hard exams!
This guy is horrible. Spent more time making awful dad jokes and talking about his kid. Assigned no less than 5 assignments after every class sometimes it was closer to 10. If you want to focus on any other class good luck
He sucks. Makes jokes the whole time and flexes his PhD to constantly say he's better than us students. He doesn't care about any of you and his grading, homework, and tests show it. Has lectures over Thanksgiving. Find a prof that gives a crap.
Dr Mclaurin is readily accessible outside of class, he offers all day office hours during test week, responds to emails fast, and has a lot of test prep material available for us. He's a great lecturer and he's highlarious. He's truly passionate about chemistry and his students, and I am retaking him for 1308 and I would reccomend him.
Great guy, amazing lecturer and he's pretty funny. I love that he hand writes his notes and goes into so much depth into chemistry. Lots of homework and challenging tests but Mclaurin offered so much material to practice and fair amount of time to complete. I hope he abolishes the weekly quizzes though.
Amazing professor, he was always available and very responsive to emails. Great lecturer I have never lost interest during his lectures. Although he assigns alot of homework and quizzes, he's very understanding and aware about due dates. Course is very test heavy so study up, the grade you get is the grade you earned.
Dr. Mclaurin's class is weighted very heavily on tests, but if you attend lectures, do homeworks, test-like questions, and pratice questions, you will do great! He's very accessible out of class and emails. He has bonus questions on his tests and offers an attendace bonus and extra credit homeworks. Staying on top on your stuff is key.
Took McLaurin's CHEM 1307 in-person. Quirky, funny, knowledgeable, and cares about your learning. His lectures are fairly thorough, and he often works through examples similar to hw problems to cut any confusion. He's very clear regarding assignments and deadlines. If you attend lectures and do some textbook reading, you'll do great.
Overall he's a great professor, his exams are fair, lectures are very informative and he likes to crack a couple of dad jokes.
I took Dr. McLaurin's chemistry section for 1307 and now for 1308, and nothing has changed, he's very great at lecturing and presenting material. Exams are very fair, and based of lectures and homework. He offers extra credit for attending lectures and offers extra credit questions on exams. He's very accessible outside of class.
Professor McLaurin makes the concepts simple and easy to learn. I enjoy going to lectures and have an easy time following along. He has made my chemistry experience a lot better compared to 1307 and I would recommend this professor. If you understand the homework, the tests will be a breeze. If you want to succeed in this class, it is very doable.
Dr. McLaurin is the most mid professor I've ever had. He does well at teaching but sometimes his lectures are extremely hard to follow as he switches from overexplaining simple topics to briskly covering topics that probably should have more depth. His tests are hard but he always releases previous exams that are very similar to the real thing.
I took McLaurin for 1307 and 1308 and can confidently say he is the best professor I've had; he lectures with great depth and intuition, and he's very passionate about it. He's very caring about his students learning, giving out attendance and test questions bonuses, and easy exams if you study correctly. Such a shame he doesn't teach higher levels
He tries to be available to students as much as possible even on test days. He gives so many incredible resources for the exams including which homework problems to concentrate on. Lectures are recorded which is great for ppl like me who cant concentrate really well. his lectures along with Gloria's SI sessions got me an A on all the midterms.
I've really come to appreciate this guy's humor. Boring Chem professors run rampant at Tech but I have come to like his lectures and teaching style. Instead of slides, he writes all of the notes with you so you don't get left behind. Provides very good practice problems and does a good job of mixing the math side and the concept side of chem
I love Patrick! He wrote out his notes in class instead of going over a slideshow which I loved. This class was extremely difficult and I think that people give him crap because of it but it isn't his fault. He is super friendly, makes tons of dad jokes in class, and is open to pretty much almost any question in his office hours. Love him!!
Mr. McLaurin is an okay professor if you are taking any chem. Don't know for sure, but I think he did curve the class. Tests do become very difficult, so make sure you attend the si sessions and do the homework.
Great Professor. Great Lectures. Had him for 1307 and 1308 and got As in both. Just put in the time. Read the textbook, go to class, and you'll do fine.
I love Dr. McLaurin, he's very kind and passionate. Lectures were great and very well paced. Quite a few homework due every other day but nothing too crazy. Though his class is very test heavy, exams are very fair and based of homeworks. His dad jokes aren't too bad
Dr. McLaurin was an incredible professor and had a clear desire for his students to succeed. He had loads of office hours, uploaded practice exams (with videos of him working out EVERY problem), and clearly defined what would be on each test. His lectures were great and the homework was manageable. Take this guy, he's a legend!
His lectures are so helpful for the tests, he doesn't go through random material you won't ever see again. He's got a really goofy personality and is considerate of other classes for the most part. Beware, you will be doing homework until the very last day of classes so don't fall behind.
I took this class because I failed it before so i needed a passing grade. He did not give me that. I studied and every test was absolutely dichotomous to what we worked. Now, I'm degreed in biology so it takes me longer to understand most chemistry things but it is inexcusable to make things in chemistry this hard! I'd take someone else!
I would recommend having prior background knowledge of chemistry. However, he is a pretty good professor. He is always willing to help and respond to emails quickly. Lectures are a little all over the place but answers all questions. He writes out his notes instead of using a powerpoint to read off of, & goes over homework questions in class.
I love this guy. His lectures are easy to follow and he doesn't use slideshows, and he works out example problems during class. He also gives up to 2% extra credit if you log your attendance. Lots of homework, but nothing too crazy. His tests can be hard, but he makes practice exams and videos of him working out the problems. Super nice too.
The lectures were very engaging and thorough, especially if recommended readings were done beforehand. The course content was conveyed completely and efficiently. No busywork, all homework was crucial to reviewing content and I feel that they aptly prepared me for subsequent exams.
Lectures consisted of him only working example problems with abysmal handwriting. Ridiculous amounts of homework due 3 days of the week. Exams are long and cover so much content.
Loved this class. It was mad fun and not cursed.
He begins the lecture with a piece of paper and writes it all rather than relying on slides. Office hours consist of fun conversations and his desire to genuinely help his students. Would take him again if I could, records his lectures, and posts them. Will upload past exams and videos on how to solve the problems.
DO NOT SKIP CLASS!!! Gen chem classes are stupidly difficult here for some reason but Dr.McLaurin is an excellent lecturer. His tests are simple as long as you do the practice questions and pay attention in class. Goes over LOTS of examples. Gives a lot of homework so be sure to not fall behind because it will tank your grade like it did mine.
He is a good professor, very funny in class and tries to help students understand. Lots of homework and the test are very difficult if him and Dr Pedrech are working together. SI sessions saved me!! Study hard.
This is the worst chemistry class I have ever taken. His concepts do not line up with 1307, which is a little ridiculous because this is a prerequisite course. The only notes he gives in class you can hardly read because of his terrible handwriting. He is also mean and is not scared to yell at you. TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE!
Mclaurin was an ok professor. He gave out lots of homework and the tests were very difficult including when he was working with Dr. Pedrech to make the exams. He was funny but his lectures just were not the best. It was also very hard to read his handwriting because it kinda looked like chicken scratch.
This was definitely a hard class material-wise, but I really enjoyed taking it from McLaurin. He went quickly through lectures but you could stop him any time to ask a question, and he would give lots of great explanation. He was also very available and helpful outside of class. Be prepared to hear lots of dad jokes!
Although I made an A in the class, I did not learn anything from his lectures. I would definitely read ahead of time before lectures to have somewhat of an understanding. His questions on exams are worded confusingly and have nothing to do with OWL HW. Lectures did not include lots of examples so be prepared to work on questions outside of class.
Professor doesn't do actual lectures, only solved problems in class, and has a 1 1/2 hour time period for chemistry tests that need a lot of problem solving. You will have to read the textbook on your own if you want to understand most of the material.
Took 1307 online last year and felt like I didn't learn anything which is why I chose to do 1308 in person this year but if anything, I'm learning less. He only solves practice problems in class but doesn't teach any or explain how he got to his answer, just writes out the equation and then the answer. I'm learning better through YouTube videos...
If you want to pass 1308, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I have heard great reviews from his previous students but this semester I have not met one person making a good grade in his class. His teaching methods are purely solving practice problems in hard to read chicken scratch. You will be better off taking Greg!
Comically horrible experience. Works problems in lectures that are barely applicable to given homework, yet also disables problem explanations on OWL meaning you're tough out of luck if you struggle with homework. Very matter-of-fact and discouraging in the few times I tried to ask him for help. Either learn to teach yourself or attend SI sessions.
This is a hard course, but Patrick is the one to take. Class not mandatory but you should go. He is funny and cares a lot about his students. Go to his office hours if you're struggling.
lectures go extremely fast, too hard to keep track of.
I took him twice and it switched it up the second year. He turned off feedback for homework so when you're stuck or confused on a problem it's pretty time consuming to try and get it correct. You'll spend hours on just one homework chapter if you can't get it right. Doesn't help when there's so many other chapters that you have to complete.
McLaurin is great! This class is hard, and it is EXTREMELY math-heavy, but he does his best to help you learn it. You need to go to class or else you will fall behind. Again, it is a hard class due to the content, but if you go to class and do your part, you will succeed. He does offer a little bit of extra credit, and the tests are curved.
Absolutely Awful. He does not teach anything in lectures, as he believes you need to teach yourself to figure out the best way to do it. Turns off any feedback on OWL assignments so you have no idea what you did wrong and there is a million assignments.
The in class problems are very unlike the exams. He is disrespectful when you email him and ask for help which is annoying because he turns off ability to learn about how to do the assignments you get wrong on OWL. He failed me because he thought I was trying to cheat on the final because I was skipping through my test. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Too much homework, he is very rude, he once sent everyone an email stating "the only good excuse to not doing homework is if you had your appendix removed", he doesn't care if you're sick or have a genuine reason (even with a doctors note) to skip class or homework
Too much homework (exactly double the required amount, compared to other profs), no homework help (he disabled the explanations on the OWL software) Grades badly Teaches badly DO NOT TAKE
Those people giving 1 start to Dr. Mclaurin so dumb giving 1 start just because he has a lot of homework problems or not working hard. If you are a person who studies regularly and do homeworks(most of the time you can find them on google even if you don't know how to do it) you'll do great.
The amount of homework:( the SI sessions were better than lectures
Chemistry is a very hard course and I wouldn't say Patrick made it easier. The lectures were very unhelpful to me on the homework and I had to watch many videos outside of class to pass the exams.
THIS GUY IS SO TERRIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM
He expects you to read the textbook before coming to class but wont even tell you before hand what you will be learning? He does not do power points and goes based of handwritten notes and problems he makes on the way. His lectures are not helpfull and will leave you pretty confused, go to si or watch youtube videos. would not take him again.
I'm sorry, but anyone who says that this man is a good professor is wrong. I talked to like five people all year who did well on his tests and knew no one who had a A+. Even my academic advisor says, the only way to pass his class is by attending lectures,ALL SI sessions, and tutoring, otherwise kiss your grade goodbye.Worst teacher I've EVER had.
overcomplicates an already complicated course. would never take EEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRRRR again
Hands down the absolute worst professor I have ever had. He was rude when responding to emails and just overall a terrible professor. Would assign 16+ homework assignments per week over stuff he couldn't be bothered to go over in class. 0/10 would not recommend on yelp. When you email him for help, don't expect to get any. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Patrick is probably the worst prof I've had so far in my college career. For the people who actually need chem and not just because it's a core requirement, do NOT take him. he doesn't care enough to actually teach you. He believes in you teaching yourself. that's not how chemistry works Patrick. Lectures are bad, not very informative.
Rather kiss a tree at 120mph than take McLaurin as a professor again. Never went to a single lecture because it was so bad and got an A. If you are competent enough just don't go to his classes and study on your own, doing homeworks (which are probably like 6/8hrs+/week if you don't use AI, which is helpful if you study on your own)
He wanted you to read the textbook, this year he published his lecture notes which were incredibly helpful, before class and then he would go over the example problems from the LN in class. He did go fast and being in class helped. He had a lot of HW but they weren't too terrible and he went through them if you go to office hours.
For your mental health DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Had to drop, too much homework and didn't understand the lectures. Learned more durning the IS session.
You need to make sure to stay up to date with the lecture notes and the homework as its easy to get behind and find yourself up until 6am doing assignments. He gives you all you need to know, make sure to study and get comfortable with the material, the exams are not simple.
You know he seems like a nice guy, but not a good professor. Lectures have no slides, he uses a piece of paper and a pen to write down everything. I'd recommend skipping his class and watching youtube videos. He makes you feel pretty dumb for asking any questions. Fire bagpipe skills though!
This guy is great at being lighthearted, but abysmal at teaching. he scribbles on paper with bad handwriting, he never writes what he is doing step by step, but rather random parts he is choosing to document when solving a problem, and he really is not good at explaining concepts clearly. he'd be cool to get a drink with but not to teach chem.
Good at teaching but with the amount of students in 1408, is difficult to ask questions during lectures. Although he is willing to help at any time of day, the lectures are what made me pass this class. Attend lectures and do the homework's the second they are assigned. DO NOT SLACK. they will kill your grade and time
He is an amazing guy but I could never understand anything he taught us. I recommend skipping his lectures, attending SI sessions, and watching YouTube videos.
The professor themselves is an amazing person but the lectures aren't helpful one bit no, SI sessions are beneficial but other than that you would have to teach yourself a lot in this course by reading the textbook & watching Youtube videos online; the tests are extremely difficult and require a lot of studying!
Chemistry is not meant to be an easy course, meaning you will find yourself spending hours to achieve a good grade. That being said if you put in the time and effort, it is very possible to do well. There are a lot of homework assignments throughout the semester, but these help you do well on the exams as the questions are harder than on the exam!
Chemistry is a difficult course and I see many people blaming the professor. I enjoyed taking this class as he prioritized independent learning: you attend the lectures if you'd like and do the homework at your own pace which, it seems, is not for everyone. Im taking him again next semester and, knowing the rhythm, am confident I'll do well.
He was a nice person, and funny, but he was not a great professor. I learned nothing in that class, and now I have to retake it.
SO MUCH HW
I think he was a wonderful professor.I'm a freshman & in high school I failed chemistry badly;coming to college & passing it so effortlessly was a huge surprise for me. I just had to do my part and I got almost perfect scores in my midterms. Something that helped me was the fact that he recorded his lectures,it was nice to have videos to go back to
Chemistry is an already difficult class that he makes so much harder. Theres alot of homework that is very time consuming. He doesnt curve much or offer much extra credit. Lectures are hard to understand, all he does is write down problems with terrible handwriting. Midterms and finals are the worst, they usually had a 50% average.
For lectures he writes on a paper and you can't understand a thing he writes. He does give study guides for each exam and records his lectures, but you will have to teach yourself. SO MUCH HOMEWORK and your final being 30%. Unless you are willing to learn the whole course yourself and have endless homework, I would choose a different professor.
Avoid Patrick's class at all costs. The lectures are unhelpful, and he assigns excessive homework. Rely on SI sessions and resources like unstuck ai for study prep instead of expecting much support from the professor.
Don't take this class
I dropped out of his class, overall as a teacher he was good but I did not understood anything of what was going on. Yes, I went to the SI session, and yes I went to his office hours, did it help? A little. Would I take him again? Absolutely not. ChatGPT saved me.
Chemistry is a tough course for a lot of people as it was for me too, honestly greg was funny in class and was always in a good mood, something that is very important to me. His lecture style could be a bit hard to understand as he just wrote notes on a paper that were not easy to follow. Attendance was irrelevant but I would take him again.
There was a lot of homework, like think of a ton and then multiply by 20. The tests were nothing like the practice extra credit assignments, more like the ones he puts on blackboard. This class is almost a completely teach yourself class, definitely go to lectures but he also goes so fast it's hard to comprehend what going on.
As someone who was terrible at chemistry in high school and ended up with an A+ in his class, you definitely need the work ethic in order to PASS. Way too many and unnecessary homework assignments is my only negative thing about his class. The exams were WAY easier than the homework. Good things- exams are curved and some extra credit is given.
He only comes to class with a blank sheet of paper and pen. If you don't read before lecture you will be completely lost. He only does practice problems and speeds through class. Be prepared to learn the entire course on your own.
This professor is very funny and genuinely tries to teach students to the best of his ability. He assigns a lot of homework, but it's worth it. The exams are easy for those who study attentively.
horrible. really. horrible.
Patrick is such an amazing professor and makes chem so much easier. He breaks down the material by doing the notes with you, instead of just teaching at you or using a powerpoint premade by the textbook. More professors need to take on this teaching style. He is also hilarious and extremely positive, a great person to be around.
He is okay. He likes to make his reviews unlike his homework. He also adds material to the tests that was not covered in the homework or reviews.
I would rather listen to him play the bagpipes right next to me for 10 hours straight than have to take another one of his tests again.
I took Dr. Patrick for 1307 and his Honors class for 1308, and I don't understand all these horrible reviews! He is a great professor, gives so much ec/curves that if you just try (which ik a lot of these people did not do), you can get a really good grade. He gives practice tests and his own lecture notes, USE THEM. He's also funny and supportive.
Very difficult class. I was an A+ student in Gen Chem 1 with a diff prof. His class is boring. You sit there and watch the document camera.he writes the notes. He doesnt explain things and discribes them like you should already understand it, even if you don't. The exams are nothing like the classwork and VERY difficult. HW is extensive as well
If you do the extra credit you only need an 85.5 to get an A. Do the homework and you'll get an A no problem.
Imagine a chemistry class taught by someone who seems chemically opposed to teaching. That's him. Do not take this class for your own well-being, his tests are horrible and all he does in lecture is write on a piece of paper.
Oh Patrick where do I begin. You go WAY TOO FAST and give out a so much more homework than the other professors.
I HATE CENGAGE. Get ready for everyday homework assignments and following along to this man writing 3 calculations per second in his lectures. Don't bother writing everything down as you won't be able to keep up.
puh-LEASE do not take this class with this instructor if you know what's good for you. He over-simplifies every topic during lecture, leaving you even more confused than before. TONS of homework, and impossible tests. Studied so much for these tests and still only did mediocre. If you have to take chemistry, avoid this man at all costs.
Go. Into. office. Hours. He has them essentially every day of the week and he will stay in his office during finals (a lot more than some profs), I had him for 1307 and 1308 and I didn't go into office hours until about halfway through 1308 - I wish I did bc it helps so much. If you take him in the spring he's the only one writing the exam aswell.
The class isn't terrible, will definitely require a lot of studying but that's just the curriculum. Prof McLaurin makes things pretty clear and uses a lot of analogies and examples to explain the topics which was pretty effective for me. There's a ton of homework, but if you can do the homework (and go for SI's) the tests will be easy.
He's got a good sense of humor (if you like dad jokes) The class itself is pretty bad. TONS of homework that was due either at the beginning of his lectures or a few hours after (NEVER 12am) Each exam is harder than the last. There's just so much you need to memorize. Extra credit is offered and I recommend doing everything offered.
Don't let his humor and small stature fool you, the amount of tears you will cry are going to be abundant in this man's class. He makes you feel so inferior during office hours and like this is just common knowledge. I was an A student before his class. He also tests like you killed his family and ate his dog. DONT TAKE his class.
the only thing that patrick provided to my first semester as a freshman was the entertainment i got imagining himself polishing his bald head with a velvet cloth when he gets home from lecture. does NOT teach, assigns all homework due on one day, exams aren't difficult but be prepared to learn everything on your own as he does not teach.
