Engaging lectures, very personable when you talk to him, there to help if you seek it out, and a major plus you can genuinely see he is enthralled with the material he is teaching. Not bad on the eyes either, has a lot of dad humour jokes haha.
By far my fave prof I've had throughout university so far. His classes are engaging and he's really passionate about what he teaches. There is no textbook or midterm for this class and the exam is take home. Gotta show up for lectures though cause he doesn't post slides online, but amazing prof and always available for help and questions!
Awesome Prof!
He's an engaging lecturer but his expectations are ridiculous. 15% of your grade by the drop date. Unclear about test expectations. Says you will fail your paper if not handed in on time (worth 35%, no extensions). Very stressful for students with disabilities. Rude via email. Class average is 69%. Take if you want to work extremely hard for a 75%.
He has the toughest tests ever and are all application questions! He is a pretty good lecturer but doesn't post anything on courselink, which can be a bit annoying since he often speaks quite fast and it can sometimes be difficult to follow what he is saying! Overall a decent prof just you need to go to class and do all readings!
This class was a tough one. YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS TO PASS! He doesn't post ANY notes on courselink, you need to listen and interpret his concepts for yourself to do well. AMAZING prof tho, his lectures were very engaging, interesting and you could tell he has a passion for teaching. Would definitely take another course of his! I barely used text
This prof is awesome and gets very involved in class! He makes the course material much easier to learn by relating it to things outside of class.
Great prof, easy to listen to but doesn't post lectures online so attendance is mandatory. Exams cover both textbook and lecture material evenly. Interesting content and he makes it relate to current times and gives great examples. Very respectable, 1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 final. Easy to talk to and ask questions. Great prof and great course overall.
Parnaby is a great lecturer, and very interesting and his classes are very fun but his tests and assignments are ridiculously hard, and his exam will bring your mark bout by 3-10%. Wants kids to fail/do poorly. Would not take again. Effort means nothing, cause he purposely puts road blocks for students. Also so unclear on the assignment guidelines.
Lectures are interesting and mandatory. Exams are difficult but reasonable, if you go to class and do the readings you should be fine. The questions are application questions so you need to be able to apply the knowledge you've read and not just regurgitate it. If you're not going to do the reading and go to class I would avoid this class.
Great prof who makes class interesting but this is a hard class.
Engaging lecturer, and has the best interests of students in mind. Classes are enjoyable- and mandatory. Grading criteria is clear and Dr Parnaby will tell you what you need to know in order to succeed. He is more than willing to review exams/papers to help you improve. You need to understand, not memorize, the course content.
Parnaby has been my favourite prof and I really enjoyed this class because of him! You have to go to class in order to pass, and he makes that clear! I actually enjoyed going to class! Also, his exams are more about understanding the concepts, but they are easy concepts to grasp your head around. He gives sample questions on how he tests you
Amazing professor. Hilarious, extremely knowledgeable and well-respected. Took him for Deviance and again for Policing. If I could take his class again I would. He presents the subjects he teaches so clearly and crisp. Always willing to help. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He may seem a bit intimidating but honestly is the most amazing prof I've ever had
Parnaby is an amazing Prof with very interesting lectures! He is very passionate about teaching and this is clear in his lecturing methods. He always asks the students if they have questions during his classes to ensure that everyone is on the same page. He is a hard marker, and doesnt post his slides because he wants people coming to class!!!!!!!!
He's a great prof but there isnt much room to mess up. The midterm is really hard and so are the assignments. You do learn a lot though. Just take the course for the credit and listen to what he says cause he's awesome!
Wow, I cant believe Parnaby has such a good rating here. He is arrogant, unapproachable, and not accommodating whatsoever. In his opinion, being in the hospital unconscious doesn't constitute grounds for submitting an assignment one day late... His lectures are interesting but his grading is both vague and ridiculous. Don't take classes with him.
Parnaby was my favourite prof in my undergrad career at UoG. He was overly willing to help me with assignments and my paper for the course. He is so enthusiastic and you can tell he is passionate about his area of study and his job. He made a huge difference in my learning experience and I wish he taught more courses at UoG.
Nice guy but ridiculous lectures. Doesn't post slides so if you don't attend you don't pass. Decent at answering questions but can be unclear at times. He is sort of a tough marker in the sense that he is slightly unclear in what he wants, he says he is open and wants us to explore our options which makes it difficult to stick to criteria
Parnaby is a nice, relatable guy whose expectations are way too high, assigned readings were all very long peer-reviewed papers, and he would assign multiple per week, tests were hard because it always seemed as though more than one of the answers were correct, but there would be some ridiculously small detail that would make an answer "more right"
He doesnt post slides, assignment outlines were vague. Pay attention to small details for quizzes. Take home final on a novel not discussed in the course, also a quiz at the end of the term to test your knowledge on lecture content.
Difficult to prepare for his tests, as many of the questions he pulls are out of his readings and rely on obscure knowledge, so it's hard to know where to look when studying. He also does not believe in giving high grades on papers, as a 70 for him is equilavent to about an 85 by most other profs. His lectures are the one bright spot.
I feel like Parnaby gets a lot of heat on here because his class is a bit more difficult than the average soc class. I was nervous about the first exam bc it's application questions, but if you attend all lectures and do the readings youll be fine! His lectures are thought-provolking and while he grades hard, i've learned a lot about essay writing!
Dr. Parnaby is a funny, and knowledgable prof, however he does not post lecture slides online, the midterm was only about 40 questions yet worth 30%, and when I asked him if he would reevaluate one of my papers, he essentially told me that he would not do it, and that hard work and effort is not a reason to earn a regrade.
Parnaby seems to get a bad rap from some, but I absolutely adored his class. He's extremely friendly and approachable, and his lectures are always engaging and fun, even though some content is very dry. His papers connect to one another and are tough, but really force you to understand the material. Overall amazing and passionate professor.
Dr. Parnaby is an ok guy and he is good at teaching meanwhile, he will not help you improve when it is needed. His midterm is all scenario based questions that are very confusing and he will not give you a high grade unless you are an expert at writing. He says that an 85% on a paper is equivalent to a 65% in his class.
I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT take a class with this prof. He seems nice and funny in lectures but the second you try to reach out to him for even the slightest accommodation, regardless of the reason, it becomes more than evident that he does not give a care in the world about the success of his students. I would NEVER recommend.
Dont ever take a class with this prof, he acts like his students dont have other courses they need to focus on and gives you reading after reading after reading, and they are all many pages long. Midterm was unjustly hard and worth 30%. He also does not care if you succeed or fail, so dont even bother reaching out to him.
Professor Parnaby is the worst prof I have ever had, and I have had some really bad profs before. I truly do not understand how he is overall ranked anything above a 2/5.
Save your time and do not take a class with him.
The worst prof I have ever had. He does not care whether you fail or not. He also forgets that his students have other classes and lives outside of his class. He's genuinely awful, do not take his class.
This professor is absolutely terrible and straight up rude. He has no respect for students time and feelings; I often received diminishing comments about my essay writing , essentially calling me stupid. He is high regarded and has made tenure but is not a good person or professor whatsoever. Very work heavy, lots of readings, very difficult tests.
I can't speak for how he teaches in person, but it is very safe to say that he is my least favourite professor for online. Seems to not understand that there is a significant difference with teaching a course online and in person because the amount of lecture content and readings that were assigned was ridiculous! Super hard marker.. does not care!
Parnaby is a great prof, but he's by far the hardest grader I've ever had. He knows his stuff and he makes lectures really interesting and clear, but you need to do the readings. Tests are okay if you study hard. He grades like you're a Master's student, so you're gonna need to go above and beyond if you want a 70% or higher on a paper.
I think he is a good prof. He cares about what he's teaching, but tough grader. A TA gave me a bad grade on an essay, I really thought I deserved better, you had the option to have the prof regrade it... but with a chance of getting a worse grade. I'm just not a fan of this policy, I was too scared to get a worse grade, but know I deserved better.
Do not take this class unless you want to be miserable all semester. He expects so much from his students and is EXTREMELY condescending when you ask him questions. He gives requirements for assignment but goes on to say if you follow those exact requirements you will get a 60. I am a fourth year student and have never hated a class more.
Patrick is a great prof. He gets a bad rep because he actually makes you work, and challenges you in order to understand the material. However, he does a fantastic job teaching, and his lectures are amazing. His tests are 50/50 lectures and readings so make sure you stay on top of both! He is very fair in tests and assignments.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Im a second year averaging an 87 gpa but Ill be lucky to get a 75 in this class. His grading format is extremely unrealistic and disproportionate to other classes; the best mark you can get is literally an . Funny thing is I read his reviews at the beginning of the semester and ignored them- worst idea of my life
Surprised by the divide between poor lecture content and heavy assignment and test requirements, Parnaby offers short and rather boring briefings of theories but will expect perfection on whats graded. He says it best, if you follow the requirements youll achieve a 50. If you want a professor with student success in mind, Parnabys not your guy.
This guy is the goat. Funny, nice and approachable. Makes you work for you marks. Exams and midterms written in a way that forces you to actually understand the content which is good. My favorite prof.
I love Prof Parnaby. He is an awesome guy. Good teacher, my fav so far
Parnaby gets so much unwarranted hate. I can honestly say I learnt ALOT in this course, more than I have in most; I love the way he teaches his content, he's very good about answering questions (in my opinion) and giving helpful feedback on assignments! It's NOT a hard class to get get a good mark in.. literally just show up and listen. Fave prof
I didn't really have an issue with Parnaby as a person, he comes off friendly in class and in recorded lectures. HOWEVER, the grading scheme in this class is messed up on so many levels. Meeting the requirement on the online will ALWAYS give you a 50%. Good luck figuring out assignments expectations cause demonstrating learning gets you nowhere.
would not recommend taking a course with him
He is a hard marker and very strict, do not recommend
Dr. Parnaby is one of my favourite professors I have had so far. His lectures are very engaging and he is super friendly in class. His grading may be tough, but it is definitely reasonable if you follow the assignment outlines and hand it in on time. Overall, I really enjoyed this class!!
Best Prof I have had thus far. Tough marker for sure, but worth it for his lectures alone. He is incredibly engaging, and you can tell he has a real passion for the content of this course. Never had a class that I actually looked forward to going to every week, and I loved it!
Tough grader and all around good dude. Should have auditioned for McLovin when he was younger haha.
Although he is a hard marker and makes his tests a bit complex, he is a very good professor, one of the only ones I've had that I can actually follow along with. His slides are simple and he elaborates well, and he is very approachable. Would definitely take a class with him again!
Although he is a hard marker and makes his tests a bit complex, he is a very good professor, one of the only ones I've had that I can actually follow along with.
Very easy to follow, engaging, great slides. Clearly cares about his students and their grades. Would opt to take one of his classes again! :)
He is a great person and is nice, but the marking for his course is ridiculous. We did papers this year and he disagreed with everything I said, feedback was only "This is awkward", "I don't agree", I got no actual feedback. The tests are ONLY based on readings (A LOT) and lecture material, but he does not post the slides, so you have to show up.
One of the toughest graders I have ever had(Dean's list student) Lectures are mandatory as slides aren't posted. Was told if I used 5 sources in assignments I would get an automatic grade cap of 65%. Used 9 sources and got a 62%. Midterm questions were not based on what we were told to study. Class was very frustrating to me personally.
Professor Parnaby has been my favourite professor I have had (I am in third year) by a LONG shot. His lectures are not only interesting, but extremely engaging... I actually look forward to going to his lectures. He doesn't post his slides, but I have found this actually helps with my learning. He provides great feedback and help whenever needed.
His lectures are really engaging and easy to follow. I also love his story-telling!
Lectures are interesting and you really have to pay attention to understand the material. It helps a lot with learning the material. However he is an unbelievably hard marker. You'd expect some sort of helpful feedback for assignments but a lot of comments made were quite vague & diminishing. Thinks a 68% class average for an assignment is 'fine'.
Dr. Parnaby has great lectures that are engaging. However, a TERRIBLE MARKER. Do not expect anything more than a 60% in this class on any graded material. The tests are extremely lecture and assigned reading heavy. Dr. Parnabys actual lecture content is very straight forward and easy to understand but the tests do NOT mirror that.
The best sociology prof I have had thus far. Lectures are engaging and the content is interesting. You have to do the readings, show up to class and take notes to succeed. People say he's marks hard, but if you keep up with content, the tests aren't bad. Overall, gives great feedback and will talk out your project with you at office hours (so go).
He's a great professor and his classes are very engaging, but marking is absolutely horrible. It's extremely difficult and you're left with little to no feedback regarding what you could've done better. The TA's are also horrible.
At first I couldn't understand how people had negative things to say about this Prof as I loved his lectures and his teaching style. Now that I am at the end of the semester, I understand where these comments come from. He is an unreasonably hard marker and honestly was extremely rude and disrespectful when I requested a re-grade.
I loved this course. Content was cool and readings were well chosen (although some were long). Lectures were straightforward and well structured. His teaching style was fun and entertaining so it was easy to stay focused. I felt like I was truly learning. Projects were outlined clearly, a bit hard, but graded mostly fairly. Exams were well made
Parnaby is a great prof, lectures are interesting and he is passionate about his work. This is by far the hardest professor when it comes to marking. In one of the feedbacks for a paper, he wrote "It seems that you have difficulty forming proper sentences." when I know how to form a proper sentence. So great lectures but horrible markers.
SUCH a hard marker. feedback will say all good things and the grade will still be awful -- exam and midterm questions were SO specific on the readings it was insane. did all the readings multiple times and still had no clue on half the exam questions
I personally love Parnaby's courses. I've taken a couple over the years with him and though difficult, I always enjoy his classes. He is very smart and knowledgeable; if you study you'll honestly be fine for the midterms. Hard marker on papers, go above expectations and learn how to research/synthesize properly.
Professor Parnaby has interesting lectures that make sure you understand the content. The papers for the course are definitely graded difficultly, and the exams have very challenging multiple choice questions. Overall it was a good and interesting course though.
Professor Parnaby is clearly passionate about the content he teaches! Lectures are always engaging, and attendance is necessary if you want to be successful in the course. Papers are marked rigorously, and the midterm/final contain some tricky questions, but prepare well in advance and you'll be just fine.
I really enjoyed Professor Parnaby's lectures, as they were very engaging and easy to understand, however, the grading and feedback I received seemed to be unfair and quite vague, which made it hard to improve. Tests are fair but can have tricky questions, however, he did remove and credit students for those ones that may have been too difficult.
He challenges you, but for good reason. I learned how to write papers efficiently and research academic sources effectively. Dr. Parnaby's lectures are always informative, engaging, and fun. His lectures and readings translate to his tests nicely. Go to class, pay attention, and do the assigned readings.
Worst experience with a prof. He grades very harshly and does not consider students at all. If you want good grades stay away from this prof
Dr. Parnaby is my favourite SOC prof so far. His lectures are super engaging, and the content taught is always interesting. I would go out of my way to take a course with him again. He can be a tough grader on essays but if you attend lectures and do your research you should be fine.
Favourtie prof so far. Engaging lectures that cause you to think about how policing in ways you had not. Overall very friendly and gives grad school advice. Gives very clear instructions about how to do well on assignments. Expects alot from you, which is applicable for a third year course, but a good mark is achievable if you attend class.
Dr. Parnaby is a very engaging lecturer and the content from this class is very interesting! The grading is quite harsh for the papers and the tests are pretty difficult. No slides posted so attendance is mandatory I would say.
Great professor. Was both gifted with a interesting subject to teach and the ability to make teaching the subject interesting. All his marking is beyond fair, you simply need to show up to class. Wild to me that anyone had negative experiences with Dr. P.
Very hard marker. If you miss a lecture you will not pass. Tests are also very difficult. Beware!
Do not listen to the good reviews. Very hard marker, and very hard exams. Attendance is mandatory because he does not post the slides. The lectures are actually interesting but very hard to get a good mark. Exam questions are just confusing. If you're in CJPP take the other option, do not take this class. Not even a mandatory class. Nice guy tho.
Lots of people have said that Prof Parnaby is a tough marker, which is correct BUT if you put in the work, go to lectures, have more than 10 sources per essay, and read the required textbook + readings he is very fair and will grant you a well deserved mark. Only downside to this course would be that he does NOT make his slideshows accessible.
Very important to attend lectures or you will not do well. Great lecturer, loved his teaching style, but also a very hard marker.
P. Parnaby was a great professor and was extremely interesting, and made class fun. He marks very hard, and exams were very difficult. However, he cares a lot about his students and is a great person. I loved his class.
Dr. P is really the best professor and lecturer I have ever taken at this school! He makes all of his classes tremendously engaging and fun, which only delivers the material better and with more care! Yes, he holds a high academic standard, but he constantly encourages all his students to strive for their best work and is happy to always help out!
I had this professor many years ago. He gave me a 0 on a paper because I had only 4 academic resources and handed it in two days late. He allowed me to rewrite it - I put in 10 resources… I got 25% on the paper because I didn't reference his lectures in the paper. I had undiagnosed ADHD and he was very disrespectful to me. Beware.
Extremely condescending. Does not let you "have his lectures" (if you don't go to class, no notes for you). Talks down to you like you are 3 years old. Very very rude. He will get what is coming for him one day. Do not take any of his classes if you can avoid it. He considers an 86% a perfect grade so good luck getting anything higher
Terrible prof. Gives zero guidance, just says things are “unacceptable” without explaining how to fix them. Told students to “get writing lessons from the library.” Rude, unhelpful, and condescending. Would NOT take again.
Honestly has 0 empathy. If you don't write how he wants with material he firmly believes in then you won't be getting a good grade lol. Every conversation I had with him was condescending - both in person and over email. I do NOT recommend taking his class or having him as a prof especially if you have mental health concerns and need extra support.
Professor Parnaby is one of my favourite profs. I enjoyed his course because he taught the material in a way that was straight to the point. He has a great sense of humour which kept the course interesting. I found the papers to be very interesting and not super difficult. If you do the readings in this course, you'll have no issues with the exams.
Dr. P is so awesome, i wish i could take all of my classes with him. even though he assigns a lot of readings, they're all super interesting and really help for the assignments. he knows how to engage the class and asks complex questions that don't have just one answer. he is really understanding as well, and just wants to see students succeed.
