He is a good teacher. It is a difficult class but he offers any help he can. I would recommend him.

As a middle aged person, he's considered good-looking. However, I tend to fall asleep in his class. I think he's a decent teacher. Not too bad, and not too good. The tests are not hard, but it requires much knowledge on the readings.
The lectures are okay, but he's definitely the best MMW professor I've had so far. He puts detailed lectures online and doesn't try to trick you. He actually wants to give out A's! If you memorize the lectures and can remember ALL of the readings, you should be able to ace the tests.
Patterson is a great guy, and the tests are easy if you study lecture notes(which are put online) and do all the readings. Advice: do the reading...the tests are based on that. I would recommend this teacher for mmw, which isn't all that fun of a course.
prof patterson is the shiz!!!! he gives u lecture notes online...sooo easy to follow along/take notes...can we say multiple choice midterms?!? yeah, for all you science majors like me that r f'ed over by erc...this guy will get u through..plus...super cute southern accent!!
Professor Patterson is the best MMW professor ever (after Overton). He cares...that's all that matters. On-line notes, on-line questions, he loves to teach. He's good to have at least once. Watch out for his southern accent...it's a hootin'.
Awesome dude! Very caring/understanding, clear and concise, and KNOWLEDGABLE. I'm going to miss the interesting discussions (just not the paper!). Take him & Overton for MMW
Great professor and lecturer. He provides online lecture notes, which are helpful, and his midterms are multiple-choice (no essays!), which are really easy if you just read and study the key terms.

I love Patterson! He is super awesome because he actually cares about his students. Also, the online lecture notes are really awesome, as are the multiple choice midterms. His accent is really cute, and he's pretty funny sometimes. Definitely my favorite MMW professor!
I give him credit for not being boring, otherwise, it was far too easy to skip lecture because I got almost everything I needed from the readings. His lectures had very little insight overall to offer on the course materials. If you want the easy way out, and a professor who cares, this is the place
Lectures get kind of boring. However you probably won't even need to go to lecture as long as you get the online notes and know the key terms. The great thing about his class are his multiple choice midterms, which are easy as long as you read and know the key terms.
i hate mmw so personally i hated the class...just do the readings and the tests are simple
GREAT PROF! You'll never see a university professor more committed to helping students learn. The southern accent and jokes made lecture worth going to. If you read two extra credit books, Patterson will bump you up by 1/3 letter grade (B- to B, A to A+, etc). Highly recommended.

Patterson is the best. His lectures are clear and they don't read like a book. He isn't intimidating at all and his office hours are always packed w/students waiting too c him.

This is a bad class to be in if ur a transfer student, transfer out of ERC you will be doing way too much extra general education, and never get to take upper division classes or double major.

best MMW teacher ever
His lectures are really boring and his class has a lot of boring readings. It is true that his midterms are multiple choice, but this will force u to go over all the readings (believe me, u won't remember everything). His final is a comprehensive essay and multiple choice quests. compared to the other mmw teachers Paterson is hard and really sucks.
Some of the raters here exaggerated. Paterson is NOT that good. His lectures are confusing. He aims to make the class hard (he said so). I took MMW 4 with another instructor and I was really excited and impressed. Patterson’s readings are completely tedious and he makes u read everything. I don’t recommend this instructor.
Way overrated! I am so disappointed with this class. He has a cult following from his MMW classes and unless you already are BFF with him don't bother taking him. In a small class of 20 he has a clique with his former students and lets them run the class with no concern for the class topic or others
Patterson is one of the best History professors on campus. The reading isn't too difficult to get through and as long as you flip through it the night before the midterm you'll be fine. He presents so many interesting ideas and if you can print out his notes prior to class, just add stuff in the margins. His OH's are incredibly useful also.
Ehhhh . . . not impressed. Really nice guy, but not a great professor. Gets off topic and doesn't end up teaching what's on the midterm (i.e. we were responsible for chapters/time periods he never covered in class.) Multiple choice midterms, which is different, but overall, not a great class. I learned a ton from MMW, but not from him.
he's ... simply crap. his lecture notes on line are good. but then he doesn't really facilitate note taking with it. you have scramble through his notes to know what he's talking about. he can't talk very well. and his accent is not cute.. its like a weird forest gump. w.e.
Patterson is such a nice professor but fails to hold your attention in lecture. He's very dedicated to the subject, but somehow his dedication and intelligence don't quite transfer to our level of interest. Has great potential to be a great prof, but again, it's all relative.
He was really nice
I did not take Patterson for MMW, I took him for a HIEU class. And the reading was ridiculous. Absolutely insane. I've never had a class where the Professor had such unrealistic expectations for his students. If it was the only class I was taking it might have been doable, but realistically we all just got screwed over. You've been warned.
Way too much reading. HIEU 152 with him was my most time consuming class, and I still got nowhere near completing all of the assigned reading.
Patterson tries to get his students to be as excited as he is, but it doesn't work (not for me). Appreciate the enthusiasm thought. TA's are sadistic. Only 1 paper, harsh on grading. Midterm super easy, gives you the prompt (essay) a week in advance. Notes online, but not helpful to fill in while he lectures. Advice: keep on the TA's good side!
There was A LOT of reading, however the class material was incredibly interesting. As long as you do most of the reading and understand general concepts, the midterm and final are very easy. This was one of my favorite classes so far. Patterson is the nicest, least-condescending professor and very knowledgeable about the subject.
Excellent attitude toward helping students understand the material, funny and knows how to hold attention in lecture, love this man!!!
A great professor who really cares about helping his students learn. He knows how to challenge us with thought provoking questions and texts, yet relies on student's to conduct much of the discussion. A very meaningful class experience. I would be honored to have the opportunity to take another with him.
Awesome professor. Really engages students during discussion. One huge issue - the amount of reading/movie watching required was insane! I spent well over 20 hours a week on the readings.
Pros: Super enthusiastic professor. His lectures get better and better throughout the course. Provides extra credit. Posts notes online.Cons: Class schedule may be tedious. You may or may not feel a little disillusioned in lecture b/c of his different lecturing style/powerpoints. Readings take some time.
Don't take the 3 hour lecture-BORING.His Powerpoints are way too detailed/wordy to facilitate note-taking.(They are posted online but why would I want to go rewrite notes if I attended lecture).Weekly quizes - very easy basic: "What is the main argument of the reading?".A very nice guy but an extremely boring class. I was satisfied with my grade.
Second course with this guy. He is simply amazing. The course isn't too difficult if you do ALL the reading as there are quizzes in EVERY lecture. Expect around 100-200 pages per lecture and it can be dense at times. But I loved it. He makes his lectures so entertaining.
Care only about grades: Quizzed on the reading every week. Quizzes are easy & only ask for the main argument. No midterm, questions are given for final. Rest of your grade is on your essay. For others who care: Patterson is a FANTASTIC prof with a huge breadth of knowledge, passion for his subject, and genuine care for his students. Great lecturer!
Perfect way to describe his lectures: a whole lotta nothing. He talks and talks but no matter how hard u try to take notes, you can't. Because you realize, there's nothing to take notes on. Everything he says is so general. In class quizzes were annoying especially when he held them off until the end of class. Nice guy, easy class, learned nothing.
Lectures are mandatory because of the quizzes in every class. The readings are long and dense, but extremely valuable. Sometimes felt burnt out from the workload, but the engaging class discussions always brought me back. Overall- love the professor and the material, but be ready to work for it.
Lecture slides posted online. He basically just speaks to the class with lots of passion and encourages a lot of discussion among students. Required clicker questions and participation questions, on top of a required quiz almost every day which I feel is better because there is no midterm. The final is one in-class essay; pretty long. Take him.
What an incredible professor. I took his 122 course as a transfer student, and subsequently fell in love with the University. He has an excellent and dynamic way of lecturing, where he involves students & asks questions that lead to particular conclusions. This really is a great course, which is why I've signed up for two of his other classes. :-)
I took this class over the summer. If you are going to take him over the summer get ready to read, a lot! Don't take another class along with this one. Five weeks go by very quickly and if you take another class along with this one over the summer it will be hard to write a decent paper. Unless writing is your thing.
I took a small 6-person seminar with Prof. Patterson, and I looked forward to it every week! He assigned a looot of reading, somewhat disproportionate to the duration. BUT he clearly knows what he's teaching, and is a master at sparking discussion and asking the right questions. Very personable and puts you at ease. Can't wait to take him again.
LOTS of reading, but you'll be glad you did it all when you cash out for the final, or ever discuss anything that has to do with international relations or the making of the post-modern world. Quizes and tests are straight forward; read and youre fine. It's evident he is so very invested in what he teaches. Incredible professor, highly recommended
Professor Patterson really cares about his students, and you can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches. CAT 2 was a required class for me, but I still came out appreciating the topic. The class requires a lot of reading, but it's immensely helpful ( and there are also mandatory clicker questions ). Take him! He's great : )
I had Him for cat2. He is a really nice person and makes the class intresting however the class can get extremely repetitive. He is passionate about the topic of tourism. However Be prepared to read because he assigns lots of readings that you have Iclicker quizzes on each class. No final you just have 3 essays throughout the qtr.
Amazing professor! Gives quizzes every class on the reading, if you want to ace them always focus on the argument, don't just summarize. The iclicker ?s were fairly easy too, mainly just facts. Keeping up with the readings are a pain, but you'll be glad you did when the final comes around. No midterm, typical MMW essays. Good class, would take again
This guy is incredible. He is everything that a history department needs for college. I love this man.
Freshman Seminar about Anti-Americanism. Super fun and insightful class of 15 ppl. I enjoyed his tidbits of advice being a freshman and always encouraged students to discuss to each other instead of to the professor. Readings really weren't mandatory and "BS-able". Easy Pass. He's also super funny and I looked forward to the weekly 2 hour class.
Unless you bleed reading and writing, I would not recommend this teacher. Of course, MMW is mandatory if you're in ERC, but this course is much more time consuming than MMW 121 based on the amount of reading you need to do (entire books, plus papers, plus videos), and quizzes are given every day. This class made my entire quarter to be a nightmare.
I wouldn't take this teacher again. He's nice and enthusiastic, but he assigns work like his class is the only class you're taking. If possible, don't take with many other upper divs. He hardly even lectures on the assigned reading. Lecture style makes it impossible to take notes. I felt stressed and tired the entire quarter due to this class.
Nice guy. If I could, I would have long discussions with him about his research and musical taste. But this is a very hard class and he assigns an excessive amount of reading in addition to the writing assignments ERC demands. If I wasn't graduating soon, I'd probably take one of his history courses.
Lectures were irrelevant and random. Makes you read five 250+ page novels on top of at least 30-50 pages of reading per class. Daily essay quizzes, mandatory attendance, and clicker quizzes. He says you should study for this class - a GE - like a 40 hour work week. Sorry, but some people have jobs and other responsibilities to worry about.
Professor Paterson could equally be a motivational speaker for how entertaining he is. He got a standing ovation at the end of the first class! MMW is a required class outside my major and I was not looking forward to it, but it ended up being a favorite. Just be prepared to work for your grade! Lots of reading and quizzes.
Professor Patterson is an amazing lecturer, and person! There is a lot of reading and writing for his class, A LOT, but it's MMW requirements. If you have to take the class do it during a quarter when you have easier, or less, classes. Class is easy, if you do the work you'll get an A, but there's a lot of work. Final is an essay for 2 or 3 hrs.
Awesome guy. It was a discussion once a week for five weeks so obviously participation matters. There was quite a bit of work considering it was a freshman seminar, but it was interesting work to do and it paid off when you got to talk about the matter in class. It is pass or no pass and in my class, everyone passed.
Professor Patterson is entertaining, insightful, and inspiring. His course was my favorite this quarter--I didn't think I'd be saying that about MMW. He really helps you to expand your worldview and understand pressing problems. Lectures are engaging, and he's really funny. Recommend!
He seems to be very nice, however, lectures hardly covered any of the reading material assigned or topics relevant to the course. There's also quizzes every two weeks, and you have to read far in advance. Lecture style made it difficult to take notes. I wouldn't take this professor again.
I thought Patterson was a nice guy but honestly, his workload was a little ridiculous. In the syllabus, he described his class as having a full-time job and I was like, "excuse me?". I had three other classes and an actual part-time job, and his weekly readings were really difficult to incorporate into my schedule when I had other things going on.
He seems to be very knowledgeable and is clearly passionate about what he teaches -- but his lectures cover material irrelevant to our actual texts. I felt like I was taking a history class instead of a HUM class. Also there's quizzes that require you to read far ahead. Take him for a history class or MMW, but not for HUM.
This class is so much work, idk if that is because of what ERC makes mandatory, or if it was Patterson who made it that way. But he actually is really inspirational and a genuinely great person. Depends on if you have a good TA or not, and if you attend eveything and give your full effort. It is UCSD for a reason
Patterson makes MMW bearable. MMW is possibly one of the worst writing series at UCSD, but Patterson makes lectures interesting with his witty humor and his openness to student input. The assignments are determined by the program, so I don't think Patterson has much say in the torture that the essays inflict. Overall great guy, and great professor.
A lot of reading and quiz. The grading is tough.
Professor Patterson is a passionate teacher and is often very funny. However, it felt like he was trying to get students to like him as a performer more so than an educator. There were dozens of classes were I walked out not having learned anything new. He tends to read the assigned readings from weeks prior like a bed time story, after the quiz...
Super passionate and knowledgeable. Caring. Great professor to chat with and get to know! Chill but also makes you earn the grade, which I respect. He has interesting stories and research on Eastern Europe. Miss having him for MMW.
I took him for a class called "What is Socialism?" and I loved the small 20 student seminar setting. Sometimes in large lectures and discussion sections (which tend to be BIG in lower division classes) it's hard to participate as much as you want to. The subject of the class was very interesting as well and the readings were never burdensome.
HUM 3 depends more on the TA than the teacher. Patterson is good, but he spends a lot of time asking the students questions, which does distract from any material in class. He has biweekly quizzes that you need to read ahead for.
I took Patterson's freshman seminar on socialism not for credit, just for units. But I loved it! He facilitated inspiring discussions and gave us interesting readings - but there was a lot of readings! He led the room well and really taught us. No tests, no papers, just lots of readings and discussions. I definitely recommend ANYTHING he teaches!
One of THE BEST & CARING proffessors I've ever taken at UCSD. You will be hardpressed to fail his class unless you never show up to lecture or do the readings. Literally, if you try you will easily get an A! Always conserned about how the class is doing and makes his quizzes manageable! Final is pass/no pass and you have the questions before hand.
This was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken at UCSD. There are readings due once a week which are a lot but honestly pretty interesting for someone who is not into history. There are iclicker questions every day, but most of the time if you click in at all you get the points. Patterson is overall very sweet and cares about his students.
In all honesty the class was more of a large discussion or seminar than a lecture. He treats students almost like peers, and his class was literally the easiest class I have ever taken. If only the rest of the world could learn to teach like this man.
Goes on and on and could't organize a single solid idea. Insert stories and transition sentences to make the whole thing sound like a coherent talk, but in the end you know you wasted 2 hours all along just to hear him rambling.
Professor Patterson is amazing! He is a great lecturer and infectiously passionate about that he teaches. He also makes the readings very manageable. We have weekly quizzes but they're pretty easy, you can find the answers straight from lecture. Overall highly recommend taking him if you can
Incredibly engaging, interesting, and knowledgeable. He's passionate about what he teaches and is enthusiastic about student responses, infusing a lot of energy into class discussions even if it was over zoom. Though lots of reading but he claims he tries to have us read the essential parts, but that's just a HUM thing. My favorite HUM prof so far.
I took Professor Patterson for both HUM 2 and a seminar course, and I can say he's one of the best professors UCSD has to offer. He's an educator who genuinely cares about his students' engagement with the relevant materials he teaches. His passion for teaching makes any class he's in front of more than worthwhile for a student to take!
I took Prof. Patterson's MMW 122 class, there was quite a bit of reading (and I'm an English major), as well as two plus hours of pre-recorded lectures on top of a two hour mandatory zoom meeting. I can understand that the heavy reading load may be required of him by MMW, however the recorded lectures, and the "lecture+ conversation" were a joke.
Professor Patterson is quite the knowledgeable professor; his lectures are more like discussions and at times goes on short tangents. There are 4 graded discussion forums, 2 critical analysis forms, an analysis essay, and a final essay. Attendance and participation is required. The course is quite time-intensive so do come prepared.
I took PHP for MMW15 and HIEU 152 during the Berlin Global Seminar. I have to say those two classes were some of the most worthwhile classes I have ever taken or will ever take in my life. PHP really cares about your ability to understand and engage with the material. I hate discussions and he made me want to participate. Highly recommend.
Took Pandemics, Panics, and Plagues. Class is P/NP and is graded on participation and attendance. Just make a conscious effort to contribute to the discussion and you'll be fine! He's very approachable and friendly. Discussions tend to get somewhat off topic but it's okay. There is A TON of reading, but you don't need to do all of it. I recommend!
He has great knowledge of written works presented in class. Classes are like history lessons and he engages with the audience often. However, his classes are not recorded so get ready to go to class. Also, if you expect him to give you writing points in class, forget about it. He only gives historical and anecdotal examples in class.
For a seminar it was more work than I was expecting, quite a bit of reading. The topics were interesting, and it was pretty easy to BS your way through discussion if you didn't know what was going on. Professor loved to talk and seemed to really be interested in everyone's perspective and what they had to say.
I took Prof Patterson for SS1! I absolutely loved this class! I do recommend reading all assigned texts because it will be your lifesaver for this course, also visit OH for both prof and your TA! Lectures were engaging and he cares so much!
This class was pretty easy overall. The lectures were fairly interesting and he tried to be as engaging as possible with his students. My only tip would be to become best friends with your TA's and go to office hours if you aren't the strongest writer. TA's grade your homework assignments. The assignments are weekly 250-350 word responses.
I had Patterson for CAT 1 and he was great. Attendance was mandatory but he was passionate and excited to teach, and the lectures were always interesting. He cared a lot about what students had to say and took 1 on 1 conversations to heart. Some reading and films but never more than 25 pages or an hour, respectively. Grading depended on TA.
Patterson is a very fun prof for this CAT class. Love how we would listen to different types of music when entering the class. Love how he LOVES it when students volunteer to participate in LE. But just his energy... is amazing!
Very interesting professor! Thought his lectures were a little boring at times. Clicker was mandatory for class though so be prepared to know the readings before going to class.
I LOVE HIS ENERGY!! WOULD TAKE HIM ANYDAY EVERYDAY! Grading depends on TA for ur writing. Lectures are all mandatory as you need a clicker. Its all worth it I love this man.
Despite this being a gen ed course, professor was very passionate and caring about the topic - makes it easier to pay attention. Participation and attendance is a large part of your grade. Be ready to read multiple articles weekly before each class. Funny professor.
I found Professor Patterson's class to be reasonably easy with the grade based on clicker questions and essays. The essay grades are based on your TA and are usually based on readings or documentaries. Although some of the readings were long, there was only one assignment per week. He sometimes went off-topic during lectures, but it was manageable
Grades are mostly based on your TA. You'll need an iClicker and do LOTS of reading, some interesting some not so interesting. Other than that, Patterson is an excellent professor. He's always interested to hear what the students opinions are on the readings, about half of the lecture will be spent listening to students' opinions.
Prof. Patterson was an interesting professor & his lectures were mostly engaging and easy to follow. I didn't use the required text, but it was necessary to purchase an iClicker. Weekly readings take a while, and they are the topic of about 1/3 of in-lecture iClicker questions. Writing assignments weren't too difficult, but were graded by TAs.
He is really interested in the topic he is teaching. He loves to hear from students and absolutely raves over student participation. Grading and improvement is really based on TAs. My only issue was that he never really made lecture about how to improve responses. He uses iClicker quizzes but you can miss a quiz and still get an A.
Grade ultimately depends on your TA. Be ready to read assigned readings prior to lecture, content is quizzed on using iClickers every class. Lecture weren't always super interesting or engaging, but definitely manageable for the hour duration. Overall great prof who cares about his students, but your TA ultimately determines your grading.
This class is probably one of the harder ones I have taken, just bc there is a LOT of reading and you have to do it bc there are pop quizzes every class. Mandatory attendance w/ clickers, you cannot have a friend do it for u. Writing assignments. That said, this is my favorite class I've ever taken. Prof. Patterson is amazing, I learned so much.
such a chill class, seminars are like 20 people and you literally just yap or don't he really doesn't care bc he will yap on and on he does not care but we have great discussions and he cares a lot abt his students and learning from them
(Grade: Pass) This was a seminar class with only 20 students and basically was a total yap session. But it was the best five-week yap session of my life. He really cares about the course topic and what we talked and yapped about, always finding a way to continue the conversation and encourage more people to speak their minds.
Tourism Class is graded on 10 short essays (graded by TA). Lectures were mainly talking about the assigned readings/movies and use iClickers for daily attendance quizzes. Very passionate, enthusiastic, and friendly guy.
I took Prof Patterson for SS1! I recommend reading all assigned texts because they will be your lifesaver for this course, from your essays to your final. His lectures are entertaining at times! I highly recommend visiting OH for both the professor and your TA! He did not post his lecture notes, so attendance is mandatory. The final was online!
Entertaining and kind man, but lectures didn't add value that wasn't in readings. 90% of lecture is listening to questionable students ramble about their own hot takes because they want the class to react/laugh, although I commend Prof for trying to encourage participation. Required you buy the $65 physical clicker and PROHIBITS use of clicker app.
He is a really good prof! He really cares about the success of his students. There is a lot to read but only has 2 essays. The final is online but you need to be well prepared to succeed. As always TAs matter more than the prof for grading, but Patterson is pretty entertaining. Lectures are mandatory and covered by clickers.
One of my favorite professors I've had at UCSD. Amazing knowledge on topics, very engaging, and overall was a delight of a class. I wish I could have him for more classes. Very fair grader, if you did the readings then you would get a good grade. Loved the format of the class as well.
Nice professor and funny, requires attendance by doing iclickers with assigned readings to answer quiz(very easy)/participation questions. Weekly responses 250-350 words that are graded by TAs— basically your whole grade is dependent on who your TA is. Not too happy with my TA but easy class!
HITO87 was such an enjoyable and engaging seminar. These seminars are three hour yap sessions, but they are so entertaining. I would highly recommend taking this course if you are remotely interested in the topic. I learned so much from this course, and I hope to take another one of his seminars soon :)).
Attendance is mandatory with clicker questions every day. He always had one question at the literal end of class so if you need to leave early by even a minute you won't get the last point. He also had writing quizzes for the books but he never talked about them during lecture at all. There isn't a final though, just a reflection
would call out people in class the lecture was not necessary in completing the assignments. Would only go because of iclicker participation which you have to pay. it was just boring
The lectures were unhelpful to understand the readings but he seems like a nice person
Professor Patterson is passionate and enthusiastic about the course material. Lectures involve a lot of student discussion, but don't rely too heavily on the readings. unstuck AI was super helpful for preparing for the weekly quizzes.
honestly i found the class boring and interesting at times. clicker questions were easy if you did the readings assigned. readings took a while to do sometimes. he's really nice though! unfortunately you are graded based on your ta and some of them are really tough. go to office hours!
his lectures weren't interesting but you had to go for the clicker questions. the readings were a bit long. your grade is mostly based on your TA and I didn't like mine very much. it wasn't too much work and the professor was nice.
Only burden was the multiple readings for each lecture and the iClicker quizzes for them, honestly just read and the weekly responses were not that bad, just tedious.
He is a really engaging speaker and super kind. I had him for a seminar, he was good at facilitating helpful conversations and curating content for the class to enjoy.
