I took American History from him 20 years ago, and he is still one of the best professors I have ever had. EXCELLENT, makes history come alive.
I learned a lot in this class and had a lot of fun in the process. If you can, take the honors section; its not very hard (eight 1-2 page papers and a project) and is more discussion oriented than his regular class.
Monotone voice...the tests are like notes so that helps, and he has a lot of visual aids which helps you stay awake.
His lectures were extremely long and boring. The tests were hard and required a lot of note-taking in order to pass. The teacher didn't make it clear what to study for so i barely passed the class. Although the teacher does try to make class fun, it's not very effective.
Don't skip he really has it out for bad students; he'll catch you and humiliate you. Very crankey attendance is like 20%. Look over outlines to get the essay. I read the outline once before each test and made A's. Read the 2 books and be present for the 3 tests or you have to write a paper.Easy A.
Knows a helluva LOT about history. Has nice powerpoint-based classes, and helpful videos/images to help you through. Really a nice guy, but very opinionated about politics. YOU WILL FAIL if you don't attend his class (HUGE grading on attendance). Follow the lecture and you'll A/B the tests.
I hate history to start with. This teacher makes you read a lot and If you don't, the notes he provides(As in you take them by your self)you in classes isn't enough for you to get decent grade so you have to read and basically teach the class to your self. He also makes you read two additional books
I took this class over the summer to get some credits out of the way for my University. GREAT PROFESSOR! Smart, passionate, and entertaining. If you attend class and keep up with the reading, you are guaranteed to do well.
Definitely wants students to take the initiative to read the chapters on their own. He's pretty extreme with attendance (accounts for 25% of grade). Expect to want to pass out during class because his voice is soo BORING! Notes are expected to be taken by ear. Tests are hard and sometimes irrelevant
Great teacher. I really enjoyed the dramatizations that he used in his clips of videos to relate to his lectures. He uses powerpoint notes so as long as you follow along and add your own notes to what is already written there you'll be fine.
One of the best ever. How can one not like him? Stay in class and get an A. It's that easy!! Do not miss the interactive presentations where he likes to add his personal views on various subjects...
Wasn't very easy. The classes were interesting, but quizes were pretty hard.
One of the best teachers I have ever had.

DO NOT TAKE HIS SUMMER COURSE! It is very accelerated and you need to keep up with his pace. His grades are based off of 3 tests and a quiz on a book you are forced to read. Also, attendance is 25% of his grading scale.
WOnderful teacher!!!! Its like you are sitting in story time during his class. it was so interesting that i barely took notes but everything stuck. Hes an awesome teacher take his class
if you come to class and take the notes he outlines for you, you will do well
Great class. Mr. Reed has lots of great infomation to impart and kept the class very interesting. Is very liberal but does not try and jam it down your throat. He is the way to go for history at Nova!
Excellent teacher. Great powerpoint and video presentations. The man has a true passion for history. You will learn a lot. Don't miss class!
Reed is the best teacher I've ever had. A lot are complaining about having to take notes but it's not hard to keep up. He makes you want to pay attention. Be prepared to read 2 books. MUST GO TO CLASS. Miss over 5 classes and you can't get an A. Worth the time... fun teacher, great lectures, incredibly passionate. Highly recommended! Very liberal.
AWESOME TEACHER!!1 he makes class fun and shows little clips of the topic and is overall a good professor!!!
professor reed is awesome! i suggest taking honors instead of regular because i've heard it is a lot easier. there are no tests, but instead 5-8 essays. i skipped alot of classes but still got an A for the semester. make sure you do the projects because they account for a big percentage of your grade! he has a real passion for history!
He was the best lecturor (is that a word?) I have ever had. He actually made history class fun!
Reed is a stud. Best prof at Nova!!
His lecturs are definitly in depth and portray his passion for history well. I am not into history at all yet was still sucked into his class. You dont have to read the text, just a few novels, and its quite easy to get an A in his class.
I loved him! He was the best history teacher I have ever had. He reminded me of Woody Allen with his hair and all of his movies. I want to take him again!
Professor Reed is good at teaching History, except in one area. It's not his fault, but he seems to speak in a monotone, and even if you're discussing something neat, it will eventually make you want to go to sleep. He goes into depth about history, but I didn't enjoy him trying to push his current political views onto us; it made me uncomfortable.

great class. interesting lectures. pretty easy class but just make sure that you don't miss a test. He's not very understanding even if it was an emergency. but i still got a b in his class!!
Sometimes the lectures are interesting, most are irrelevant. The key to passing this class is to stay awake and take notes. He even gives you an outline (tho you gotta print it yourself). Take notes on that outline! Expect to read very little from the textbook, though he requires you to read a 420 page book outside of class and discuss it later on
Excellent Prof. I had him 32 years ago and he was my best and most memorable teacher. It nice to see kids appreciate him now as I did then. Love his stories. Reminds me of Ken Burnes history shows on PBS.
this professor is not only extremely established but also very interesting as well.He really made history alot of fun, has interesting political views and has the class watch movies that make you think about history and current events, he uses the books that are required reading in your sylabus in all tests and offers extra credit for activism
Pure quality. I didn't care much about history, but his insightful nature and thoughtful presentation made his class amazing. If you need to take history, he's the best there is.
one of my favorite professors ever.
He looks just like House, Md. He is the most boring teacher ever. All he does is talk and expects you to take notes. He sometimes shows movies. He is a funny person to talk to, but not to learn from.
just go to class and pay attention
Good teacher. Lectures are neat. Take notes on 19 page slot notes and you should be okay. Not much textbook use. Wasn't clear on what to study, but ended with a B on a test. You watch cool 10 min film clips almost every class. MUST read a 420 pg novel & discuss it. Extra credit is another novel and write a report. Worth checking out!
Awesome teacher but was lost at what to study. Use the course outline and read the books you will do fine.
show up, add some notes to the outline he gives you and its an A
Love this guy. makes the class interesting and gives very little homework. easy A.
I took History 121 as a summer course and I recommend Prof. Reed to everyone! Fantastic teacher who actually cares about if you fail or pass. Lots of reading, and mandatory novel. 3 tests and I got two C-'s and a C and still got a B in the class w/ no absenses. Fun too, lots of movies/tv clips throughout the class!
He's very easy, but you have to listen to political rants. Very liberal, other than that though he's very nice, helpful and a great teacher.
he was nice
I took the US History in Film course -- super easy class! Only have to give 3 presentations per semester; other than that just show up for class. Prof. Reed is an awesome guy, and very passionate about history. He makes it very interesting, and I actually have learned a LOT from taking this course! Would recommend for humanities elective.
Reed is a pretty cool professor. Just remember to study for all of his tests. Class is pretty fun the first 2 months then gets kind of boring.Make sure to go to class, its 25 % of your grade!Study!
Very Nice Man! Reminds me of Mr.Rogers. He's really passionate about his class and a fairly easy grader.
This class was easy and fun. The only work in the class was to watch and do a presentation on three different movies. There is no way you could fail this class. Also, Professor Reed is very flexible when it comes to presentations. Easy A.
Great teacher doesnt go off and lecture you to death. Keeps you interested and tests are multiple choice like 50 questions and an essay which isnt very hard
He is the best professor for this course. I never took any history class before but still got an A. Attendance is mandatory 25% of your grade. His teaching way is fun and engages students. The class in the summer can be long but still worth it.If you need notes or the book for this class ( summer 09 2nd 6 weeks ) email me @ [email protected]
Great Teacher. Makes History class fun and interactive. Attend all classes, Take notes and you will get a good grade.
Prof. Reed is smart, engaging and knows his subject extremely well. He succeeds in presenting the material in an interesting fashion. Prof. Reed also cares very much about his students and provides the tools for success in his classroom. I highly recommend him!
AMAZING!
Over all he is a good teacher. His test are confusing but if you study you can figure it out.
he is a bit opinionated... but a good teacher
he's really funny, talks a little monotone but jokes alot and uses lots of new age movies/shows in ever presentation. gives us the outline for every test too.
he was very unpredictable. the stuff on the tests were not really covered in class. he is very boring and the class is long. he makes you watch videos that don't always pertain to the class. the things on the tests are not on any of the written material he gives (outline) and he only ever mentions the ideas. the outlines are more than 10 pages.
If you go to class and actually pay attention, its an easy A. However, if you miss a class and don't read the notes yourself, your screwed. Tests are confusing and there is not a real final. The final is on a book we did not talk about once during class. Monotone voice too. Not appealing in the a.m.
If you need a history credit, this is by far the easiest class you can possibly take. He gives you three subjects, last semester was journalism, westerns, the 50's, you watch a movie that deals with the subject and make a power point presentation on it. That is all, if you're not an idiot its a guaranteed A.
He is awesome. Very lay back, funny and knowledgeable. I loves his classes!
At first I was a little skeptical, but by the end of the semester I have to say this was one of my favorite classes. Professor Reed is a great professor and his classes are fun. He wasn't too hard, however I highly suggest you read from the textbook. I'd say you could get by with a B without reading, but if you read you should definitely pull an A
Prof. Reed is a very good teacher. I also appreciated his sense of humor. Reed has very good knowledge of the material covered and explains it in a why that makes it interesting. Would recommend it to anyone.
Professor Reed is your average professor who stands infront of the class and just spits out history likes its written on the back of his hand. The knowledge that he shares is amazing and his video presentations are hilarious! Do not miss class and taking notes on everything he says is a MUST!! Defintely one of the best history teachers!
Second semester with him was even better. He is stilllllll the best around. Absolutely love him. He makes you think things through. He is truly a good citizen.
Great professor! Super easy, very funny, very knowledgeable. Amazing class.
Very fun teacher, his U.S. History in Film class consists of nothing more than presenting three projects on movies throughout the semester, only watching other people's projects the rest of the time. Strongly recommended for anyone who appreciates history, film, historical films, and just having a good time.
Enjoyed the class as long as you show up to lectures you should have no problems. Good Teacher!
I took the condensed 6 wk course this summer. We had to read Killer Angels and had three exams. There is no HW or assignments (besides reading the book). Just use your outline to study for the exams. GREAT teacher! His presentations are entertaining. He is really sweet!
Grew up a hippie so he teaches from a "the world needs peace" kinda viewpoint. Overall, a really good teacher. He is very interactive with his students.
One of the first times I've felt engaged with the history in a classroom. Doesn't just teach the textbook, he makes you see the people behind the events, and welcomes individual interpretations of historic events, even when they conflict with his own. Only thing that's weird are the video montages he uses; has kind of a brainwashing vibe.
An amazing professor! Very clear and down to earth. Makes history worht listening to. You should take the two books he assigns seriously though, becuase if you don't it can really hurt your grade. He gives an awesome study guide which you should fill in during class. When test time comes around, just review your study guide! Great class!
Class lectures showed evident race/class/gender pedagogical tilt, which he admits towards the end of the semester, and are supplemented with multimedia presentations. There are three tests and it is imperative that you do well on them. In addition, two book readings are assigned, and both are historical fictions. Workload is extremely easy.
He uses a lot of videos in his lectures. Nice man who tries to keep everyone interested and engaged. Uses different teaching styles to help different people. Gave an optional paper if you missed a test it could be used, or you could write it to drop your lowest quiz grade. No other homework though. Very easy, just have to do your reading.
Such a fun class! It's a great elective. Prof Reed is the stereotypical historian. He voices his opinions so if you're easily offended you might not want to take this. I'd take it again in a heart beat U.S. in Film is epic!
teacher is awesome. test are easy. u guys better read the books. take a notes it will help you and teacher helpful for anything
great teacher. easy tests and explain everything
I enjoyed this class a lot more than I thought I would. Professor Reed regularly shows relevant movie and TV clips to keep the class engaged. Don't bother taking this class if you're not going to show up or do the reading, as participation ends up being 25% of your final grade.
His teaching methods are unconventional and didn't work for me.A lot of TV and movie clips. Some helped to get information stuck in my head in a more relevant way but some seemed out of place to me. There is virtually no work for this class. Stay current on your reading. Class discussions will be more meaningful. Good teacher. Go to class!!!
you have to study so u can get an A. he's a fair grader
First time taking American History, and Prof. Reed. Amazing experience. The book readings are challenging (2 books of 400+ pages), but if you enjoy reading, take him. He is like your sweet grandpa telling you the history of your country with a soothing voice. Such a brilliant man, wish him the best.
One of the more interesting Professor's I've had. He has a very interesting method of teaching using a large amount of video clips which can sometimes be distracting, but entertaining. You do have to attend class and keep up with the reading if you want to pass.
While class was certainly entertaining and Prof. Reed is a cool guy, I didn't find his teaching methods to be very good. His power points are filled with video clips that I felt were more distracting than helpful. He also is never clear about whats going to be on the test and sometimes theirs stuff we didn't cover in class. Lots of reading required
BORING! Class is a snoozefest and all you do is watch powerpoints with video clips. Test are confusing and he never goes over exactly whats on them. Attendance is mandatory. Don't take this class.
Really the coolest guy ever. He is very open minded and very knowledgable of the subject. I am start to like history because of him.
Great class! I am NOT a history person, and he actually kept me interested. He shows lots of videos and tries to relate history topics to what's happening in the world today. How did I get an A? I took LOTS of notes on his outlines and studied those. He has essay questions on his tests. To prepare, study what he marks with a "star" & the climaxes.
Should have spent more time explaining topics instead of showing us video clips. Attendance is required (25% of your grade) and class is very boring.
This professor is great. he incorporates video clips into his lectures, and some were even made by his children, which I, personally, find rather cute. He is a knowledgeable guy and even though he brings in a pile of papers to read from, he barely uses them. I loved his class.
Amazing teacher. Lectures are captivating. no hw, MUST read 2 books per semester. 3 tests per semester, multiple choice w essay. Attendance counts. Cares about students, has a passion for history. Incredibly smart, nice and funny. will allow you to write book report to drop lowest test grade. Would take him again in a heartbeat. Do not need Textbk
His lectures used a lot of video clips from pop-culture which somewhat helped keep me engaged. He's a cool guy who has a passion for the subject. Class could be really boring though. Only real complaint is that he was never clear about what was going to be on test. Test themselves were average. Must read 2 books. Attendance is 25% of your grade.
Average, but very boring class. I struggled to stay awake through many of them. He's a good teacher though. Only problem I had with him was that there were no study guides for the test which made studying difficult. Attendance is 25% of your grade though so just show up and take notes and you'll pass.
his lectures are entertaining and interesting. But takes attendance and it's 25% of your grade. The test questions aren't what you think will be on the test and there are only 3 of them. they are obscure things in mentions in class. but he's very passionate about history.
Meh. Class consisted of very long and boring lectures. Test were alright, but he never told you what was going to be on them or even gave you a study guide. You have to read 2 books for the class and 25% of your grade is for attendance. I probably wouldn't take him again, I nearly fell asleep way too many times.
Great class. Amazing option to drop a test grade by doing a simple paper on an easy-to-read book, incredibly short testsquizzes, as long as you pay attention to his outlinefill it out you should get an A. Professor is also friendly and dedicated to his job. I would definitely take it again.
Easy A if you attend & try! Patrick Reed is old, but very charming. He teaches as if hes reading off index cards on the wall (same lesson for over 30 years). Uses video clips to lighten the mood, very funny. He is very helpful during and after class. His tests are the PRINTED OUT outlines. READ KILLER ANGELS & BURR (textbook not needed though.)
He's a cool guy. Very passionate about History and has a unique way of teaching it. Class could be really boring at times though. 3 test which were pretty easy, but could get a little tricky. 2 books you need to read. Attendance is 25% of your grade so you can't skip. I enjoyed his class and would take him again. Not many professors like him.
I took him for History in Film and he's awesome! The class is graded on 4 presentations based on different topics (History of the futureKorean War). After each presentation we discuss the film and how it relates to history leading to interesting discussion. He was very relaxed on what films we did also. Worth taking if you need Fine Arts credits.
Easy class all you have to do is show up every class. Easy finesse. He cant see anything and he plays a lot of movies just come take a nap in class and the test are like my 5th grade history tests
Took him for HIS 121, 122, and 262 because I liked him so much. He loves history and is a kind professor that obviously some want to take advantage of. He loves American history and you will get the grade you deserve in his class. Reading is required, a lot of it--it is college after all. He is most fair and merciful. Tests are hard, only gives 3.
he's not there anymore, but he was the best when he was.
Only 5 grades in the class: attendance-20% test 1-20% test 2-20% test 3-20% and a paper written on a book you have to read-20%. The tests are pretty ridiculous. One essay question is worth 50-60 points of the whole test and the rest is like 15 multiple choice. If you don't study hard, you will not pass. His lecture is SO boring and no extra credit.
Do your homework.
