class TOO easy. 4 EASY essays and some on attendance makes not worth going
He is nice. Semi-Hard to understand. Grades papers semi-hard. Hard to get an A.
Hard to understand. Lectures are boring. Repeats himself too often.
Nice Guy, excited about history, but ver boring class
hard to understand, hard to get an A, boring, but no test!!
Tears papers apart when grading, hard to get A's. Very friendly and nice.
English would be nice, don't bother
He'll write good comments on your papers, but never give you an A.
Not too hard of a grader, but won't give A's. He is very nice & willing to help
His grasp of details of history is actually worse than his English.
ehthusiastic and helpful when writing papers GREAT PROF!
Great Prof, he is excited about HST, and ha ha I got an A on my paper! booyaaa
Extremely nice and helpful. A little hard to understand at first but not as bad as people make it out to be. Tests aren't that hard. Expected grade-A/A-
Not very difficult, tests are easy. Excited about teaching
Hard to understand.does repeat to help clarify.cannot get an A..only have 2 tests and 2 papers
not a bad guy. a little boring but very helpful. take advantage when he offers help and you will do fine.
good guy just go to class, cuz he takes attendance. not too bad of a grader
EXCELLENT PROF! TAKE THIS CLASS AND NOT ONLY LEARN HISTORY, BUT GET GREAT GRADE
easy B class, but doesn't give many As. include ANALYSIS in your papers!!!
Really doesn't seem to like to give many A's. Lectures are pretty boring and you can zone out as long as you read the book. Real easy class to get B's in. Read the book and go to class and you should be alright.
Should have been an SWS class..4 grades-2 papers and 2 exams, all essay. Willing to give A-, but very few A's. Takes a while to catch on to his accent.
Very easy grader and it was a very simple class. I encourage everyone that is enrolled in HST 340 to take this guy. Very easy and knowledgable teacher.
Second time I've had him as a prof. You couldn't find a nicer guy out there, and he's very knowledgable in the subject. Classes were generally very interesting. Maybe could use more direction in discussions.
Not too hard of a class as long as you read the material, lectures can be boring, hard to get an A but easy to get and A- or B range
Good guy, doesn't give out many A's, but you can't really get less than a C in the class unless you don't do the papers or take the tests, which are pretty easy, if he gives out a C he lets you redo your stuff!
I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He knows so much about Asian history and is very interesting. If you are good at writing essays, you'll love the class. 2 essay exams and 2 papers, very easy to get A's if you know how to write.
Great prof!
A very nice guy. If you can write papers, you will do well in the class. Can be hard to understand, due to heavy accent, but knows what he is talking about. Don't worry about reading all of the articles, just go to class. It is very possible to get a
Wonderful Prof...one of the best I've had at GV. I went into the class with little interest in the subject, but his enthusiasm for teaching combined with his knowledge made it very enjoyable. Very nice and willing to help students. Take him if you can.
Very passionate about his job, and interesting to listen to. Pay attention in class, and you will do well.
Very good experience, he has a wealth of knowledge to share, ask questions...he has a very interesting past. Genuinely interested in helping students, not too demanding, relaxed class where learning is enjoyable. Highly recommend taking his class.
Pretty cool guy
I'm just impressed with his English. VERY Smart man. He has a very kind nature about him as well. I enjoy his class. Study and you should be fine.
This is the second time I've had Professor Shan. The lectures are kind of boring, but he's a great professor, he speaks clear english, he's extremely helpful and he's so incredibly passionate about his job. He's a very smart man!
I've taken 2 classes with him and wish I could take more, very fair and loves teaching. Very polite and funny. Always gives validity to all questions asked and will answere them thoroughly. He has a bright future with GV or any other school. HE IS A MUST!
The most prepared prof i have ever taken. Very intelligent. Sometimes has a hard time understanding student questions, but is a super nice guy. I learned a lot.
He is very knowledgable, friendly, and passionate about teaching. Lectures can be boring, but he has a ton of knowledge to share. He relates well to students also. Majority of grade is based on papers & essay exams, so good writers can succeed easily.
Am I the only person who thinks this guy is awful? Does NOT have a clear enough grasp of English to adequately teach at the 300 level. I did not learn anything about the content area in his class. DO NOT take this prof!!!
Nice guy, gives questions for exam and goes over in class. Papers are not all that bad. English is hard to understand.
He's a very nice guy and is always very prepared. The one thing that bothered me with this class is that some of his lectures are very biased and shares his point of view, not a balanced view (specifically referring to a lecture on Japan). Though, he is a very nice guy and knows his material.
He is such an annoying guy. He never lets you out on time if you have another class after his you will always be late. He is a hard grader on papers. The class is WORLD history but he is chinese so all we learn about is Chinese history. He can't speak well & he will take up time in class repeating.
Dont listen to the other ratings. This guy is such a great prof. He will help you anytime and is wonderful to have in class. Learned so much from him and would love to take him for more classes anytime. He is a GREAT prof. you have to work for your A but he is fair and interesting. Take him
A great class.
This guy loves America. He has a passion for American culture. He even changed his former name to Patrick, after Patrick Henry, an American hero.
A great class.
Dr. Shan is perhaps the kindest man I've seen working at GVSU (that says much because there are a lot of kind people there) - and has a genuine heart for history. The only potential barrier is that his accent is a little heavy, but he more than makes up for it by giving numerous opportunites to ask questions.
Very kind and flexiable professor who is willing to extend paper deadlines-just ask :) He also is very knowledgable and you will learn a lot, yet the class is not too hard. The only drawback is that he tends to repeat himself a lot, but that helps when you didn't catch something the first time. His accent is fun and not hard to understand.
Patrick is a good teacher because he repeats and clarifies everything and is specific when it comes to exams and papers. You don't have to beat around the bush to find out what this teacher wants. He is also flexible for paper due dates. I would recommend if you want a prof. who has lived in China. He has a little accent but not hard to understa
Amazing Professor! Very reasonable with exams, papers, and quizes. Very fun to be in class. He is very experienced in his teachings. Professor Shan is honestly one of the best professor here, this is coming from a person who hates history. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!
I really didnt like him very much. His lectures were boring and monotonous, and he seemed to grade more on style than content for papers. I went to his office hours, but he was pretty unclear about what he expected. Exams were tough too. He gave eight possible questions, and then chose one for us to write 4 pages on for exam day...not fun.
Good class, professor can be a little hard to understand but generally clear. Did like to spend time showing us chinese language characters which really known one gets. Otherwise workload was acceptable and grading was fair. Professor Shan really knows his stuff, great personal experiences.
He's a very nice and sweet guy. He loves to talk about China and Christianity. He's very passionate about History. The class is not hard but take good notes and organize your papers well and you should do fine.
A good class to take.
AWSOME PROF. HE really knows his stuff. His lectures were engaging, and He KNOWS how to choose a textbook. I'm a HST major, and I would even reccamend this class to people not interested in History. He was well organised, clear on expectations for assignments, and graded fairly. I loved his class.
He is a very good professor. The class is not to difficult as long as you can write well. Your grade is mosly essays and essay tests. I found his class very interesting, but after all I do love history!
I really enjoyed having him as a professor. He used slideshows, and if you copied them everyday, you are very likely to get an A in the class. He is a fair grader and very helpful. Also very funny.
Prof. Shan is an efficient professor. He sticks with the schedule that he gives out on the first day, and he hands back your essays very quickly. His lectures follow the book, so reading isn't always necessary. His exams are fair, mostly essay writing, but he's also fair with grading papers.
He has a lot to teach and he does his best to make everything easy to understand. He is willing to answer any questions, which is helpful. He also makes the class pretty entertaining. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Prof Shan is a great professor. He makes everything clear and understandable. If you pay attention and write down what's on the power point, then it's not too hard to do well.
Dr. Shan was amazing! He has a good sense of humor and his lectures were interesting. He is from China and his accent is so fun to listen to. Didn't make us know a lot of topics for exams but you had to know them thoroughly. Reading assignments were easy, papers weren't too bad. Lectures mostly based on the book and expanded on them.
Great professor, very helpful. Only drawback is that for SWS courses, he is a tough grader on papers. On the plus side, he lets you rewrite papers; after 5 really simple rewrites (just a few revisions each time and print), I got a 90% on each paper.
Professor Shan is a really nice guy. He is very flexible and is willing to help. The main thing that I didn't like was that the lectures were BORING. He has an accent but it's not hard to understand. I probably wouldn't take him again but he isn't a bad professor.
Really nice guy , easy grader . Responds to emails pretty quick . Always has a smile on his face , he rarely let's class out early but he's well prepared and overall one of the best professors at GV. Also, His accent is not a problem with understand him, he speaks fluent English . Get him if you can !
Great professor and always positive and enthusiastic. The class was well guided and is in a lecture style but he always leaves time for discussion at the end of class if need be. You can tell he loves history.
he is a very enthusiastic teacher when it comes to the topics, the students learning, and especially the notes. he elaborates from pictures and can go kind of fast so you have to pay attention but as long as you do the class is easy. he is always willing to answer questions, explain further the topics, and review assigned essays and homework
He's a great teacher. His philosophy is that he's "here to help, not punish" his students, which is amazing. As long as you turn in a paper for the class, he'll give you an A.
Great man. SO cute. Loves what he does!
Professor Shan is awesome! He is super sweet and very passionate about history. His lectures are engaging, and he wants to help his students learn and succeed. Be sure to do the readings because it will make doing the papers and studying for the exams easier. I hope to have him as a professor again!
He is an amazing professor. He is the sweetest man and truly wants all of his students to succeed. There are two papers, a midterm and a final. If you take notes in class from the power points you should be fine. See him in office hours too and he'll help you write your papers.
He is the sweetest man and well intentioned. But his lectures can be long and pointless. There are quite a few papers with lengthy prompts and the exams also include an essay. This class was kind of a lot of work for what I got out of it, thats at least how I felt. But it isn't incredibly difficult if you do at least some readings and show up.
Hes one of the nicest professors Ive ever had and cares a lot about his students. There were 3 papers throughout the semester but there are clear guidelines on what he expects. Attendance was mandatory so dont skip.
Prof. Shan is a super nice guy, not funny but really cares about his students. Very excited to present history in the classroom. The lectures are kind of boring. The two papers are tough and the 2 exams are difficult. But, he is always available to help. Exams include a 4 page hand written essay, double spaced. His english is superb.
Professor Shan is awesome. So far he is one of my favorite professors at GVSU. He cares a lot and wants his students to succeed. As long as you show up to class, you should do fine.
There is a lot of reading to this course. He has 1) the textbook, 2) a collections of works book, and 3) a biography book. You write 2 papers and have midterm and final... that is it for grades. Class is broken into two parts: lecture and then a discussion on the readings. If you do all the readings, you will be looking at about 5 hours of work.
One of my favorite professors here at GV. Very nice man and very engaging in his lectures. You can really tell that he knows his stuff. There are four grades in the class (two exams, two papers) and as long as you take notes in class, you will be fine. Take Shan if you are able to!
Professor Shan is one of my favorite professors, he is super nice and very knowledgeable, you are graded on two papers and attendance, midterm and final exam. For the exams, it is 10 multiple choice or fill in the blank and he gives you a list of 6 essay questions beforehand that might be on the exam, so you can prepare and study! Very easy prof
Great Professor and super nice, wants students to succeed and always willing to help! If you're just trying to fulfill your gened take HST 203, it covers both historical perspective and global perspective! There's a lot of writing in the class, but he's an easy grader.
Amazing Prof! He truly cares about students and teaching. Expect lectures and reading. He made me want to come to class even though it could get boring. I suggest taking him for your SWS !! He is the best
This class intimidated me at first but ended up being a very easy class. He is very kind and loves what he teaches. You do have to get 3 books for the class but I never read for the homework and was totally fine. However I did use 2/3 books to write the heavily weighted papers. No HW is ever assigned besides reading. Two papers and two exams total.
By far the best professor at GV. He grades papers right away and is so sweet. He truly cares about his students and invests his time into your learning. Definitely recommend taking his class!
Professor Shan is one of the best professors that I have had at Grand Valley. For this course you are graded on four essays, and an automatic 20% is given for course participation. He grades the essays quickly, and the scores are generous to say the least!
Overall I learned a decent amount and the workload wasn't overwhelming as you are graded on 4 papers. Prof Shan is extremely smart and can answer any question you have and he wants to do so. I can't say I would take his class again but he is a solid choice if taking world history. His grading is also insanely fast.
Only four papers for the whole semester no other assignments. Two exams included (they are papers), gives you a study guide for the exam papers and a week + to study. Stays on topic when lecturing, and uses power points. Well-organized, replies to emails promptly, and very laid back. Not a tough grader either, very kind! Would take again.
Great professor, knowledgeable but class is boring. I took a SWS version and there was only 2 papers along with a paper written for the midterm and final along with 10 or so easy questions. I never read the 3 books fully but had to refer to them to write the papers. He teaches from a slideshow that you can't miss and is a VERY easy grader
Amazing prof, follows a PowerPoint for lectures, class is usually boring but he is very smart. if you come to class and pay attention half the time you should get an A
Professor Shan really cares about his students and is a pretty easy grader. The midterm and final consist of papers you must write in class but it isn't hard. He is very approachable if you have any questions about stuff. Overall I would recommend him for HST 203. Note: He does have a thick Chinese accent which can be hard to understand at times.
Professor Shan is great. He has wealth of knowledge in his subject and he cares about the success of his students. He is not a hard grader and has very good lectures. If you come to class, pay attention, and take notes you will do fine. If you get the chance to take HST 333 (Modern China) please take it.
Professor Shan is one of the most amazing professors I've had at GV. He cares so so much about his students and would do literally anything to make sure they succeed. He makes himself so accessible outside of class and he is such a quick grader, especially for an SWS class. Four papers might seem intimidating but he makes everything manageable.
Patrick Shan, is one of my favorite profs I have had at both colleges I have attended. I took his HST 203 course as a Tuesday evening block class. His entire class is either a 3-hour lecture, a class discussion over some readings/primary sources, or half of one and half of the other. can get boring. He is kind and caring. graded on 4 papers.
Professor Shan is a highly knowledgeable professor. His primary teaching style is lecturing, but he sometimes shows video clips in class: two papers, a midterm & a final. You have to know the information to pass with a high grade.
Professor Shan was amazing. Only a handful of grades including 3 papers, but gives plenty of notice and will proofread your papers before you submit them. Provides lots of feedback on papers and exams, and gives very interesting lectures.
Professor Shan was very caring but he was just boring. I did learn a lot from him but I often played games on my laptops instead of listening to his lectures. I learned a lot from the readings and the 5 assignments we had to do. He gave out 2 written exams one short group project and 2 papers.
Professor Shan did a great job with this course. It was an expansive survey of ancient history but he planned it well. Highly suggest attending lectures but if you miss one or two it's not too bad if you get the notes. He appreciates participation and is a really great guy. He cares and knows history so well! Very knowledgeable.
Shan was a very sweet professor. Really caring, and fun to learn from. Lectures were interesting, and he was very engaging with how he taught it. 3 papers, an exam, and a group project was all this class was graded on. He prepared you with study guides, and you basically knew what was going to be on the exams. Great guy.
In terms of workload, super easy; 2 essays and 2 exams, that's it. However, class periods are so incredibly boring. He makes no effort to engage the class and essentially just talks at you for an hour. The exams are handwritten essays. I would avoid if this learning style doesn't work for you, I did most of my learning outside the classroom.
Shan was great! Very kind professor and keen to answer any questions. There's little in the way if assignments so grading is sparse (two papers, a group project, and in-class exams) but if you put in the work and show up to class, you'll do fine. Very understanding and does not mark you down for absences which I appreciated. Would def recommend.
