really wants to teach you how to draw, very helpful, fun and laid back. great class.

Incredibly Cool guy. His class is a great environment and conducive for drawing. You gotta get the work done, but its fun to do.
HE IS SO HOT. I LOVE PROFESSOR MCKINNON
He cares a lot about his art and his students
Great Professor. Will improve your drawing ability, and won't bog you down with work. Would highly recommend him for those of you who are fearful of drawing.
Awesome guy, likes good music, and very helpful.

mckinnon is adorable and really nice. i'm not sure about his grading, but he's a nice guy. he complemented my drawing a bunch, but when i handed it in, i got a C+. slightly puzzling. he also is one of those teachers that draws on your paper, which i hate. but he's really nice and much better than other drawing teachers i've had.
Great teacher! Knows what he's talking about, easy to talk to, and very helpful. You only work on ONE project at a time. The in-class assignment, is your homework. Loved his class
He is a great teacher! I am very horrible at drawing and he understands and helps you out, instead of penalizing you for making mistakes. He is a FAIR grader and you can resubmit and assignment. I would take him again in a heartbeat. Really down to earth guy and he definitely knows what he is talking about.
My mother died during my quarter with McKinnon. He was an utter SAINT, helped me take an incomplete, and still gave me a B in the class when I couldn't produce all of my drawings. Just a cool, down-to-earth guy. Very helpful. Amazing professor.
best proffesor ive had at scad to date, he is willing to help you at any time with any problem and wont stop until you understand. he makes the subject fun and entertaining and he is a really nice guy. i took him for drawing 1, 2, 3 and life 1.
professor mckinnon is the best. he is not the easiest grader but i learned so much in his class. take him!
He is awsome. He is the most helpful teacher. I really did not like drawing before I took his class but now I am comfortable with the art
He doesn't tell the class alot but he will help you one-on one when you need it. Great if you want to build a portfolio.
Awesome teacher. Extremely helpful. This class is not an easy A, however. You must put effort into your work.
McKinnon is amazing. Usually you have professors who will come around the room once every hour or so, then sit back down at their desk. Prof McKinnon circles the room throughout class, helping with each detail. Projects are great, just enough time and got a really good grasp of different materials. You get to make your own still lives! Thank god!
McKinnon is a wonderful person and a great, motivating professor. I reccomend him to anyone; regardless of your skill he'll help you to improve and will motivate you to do your best. He grades everyone on their own skill level. BONUSES: he's got great taste in music. AND he's gorgeous... you can't lose....
McKinnon is an excellent professor that really knows his stuff. It is difficult to get an A in his class but not impossible. work hard and ask for help and it will pay off!
McKinnon is a young guy and you will have some pretty spectacular work come out of his class. He does little demos of the material and has plenty of examples to guide your work. He wants you to experiment on your own, but comes around as you work in class and helps you on an individual basis. Definitely take him if you can.
TAKE MCKINNON. Before I took his class I never thought I could produce portfolio worthy pieces. You are given one assignment at a time & he gives you plenty of time to complete it in class. With every project he provides an extra help session the weekend before it is due. He constantly walks around the class to help & lets you rework after critique
McKinnon is a great professor, I would recommend him to anyone. He is extremely helpful and is very aware that Drawing II is a required class for many students. The biggest upside to his class is the fact that students can rework projects. There is a critique, and then you get until the next class to fix any problems before the project is graded.
I loved McKinnon! He makes it a point to touch base with everyone on their progress during each class and holds regular help sessions. He also allows students to rework projects after critique. Really friendly and mellow.
He's a great teacher. He's very clear and always walks around while we're working and helps us out when we have trouble. I like that he lets us come up with our own still lifes so we can work on them in our dorm room instead of going all the way to the building to do them. I've learned a lot from him.
Take McKinnon. Very nice, very cool. Very helpful. Gives a rework after each critique. Show up for the extra help, and if you cant, you can email your work for advice.
Patrick Mckinnon is a beacon of light in the drawing department. He will help you get your proportions right, and teach you logical tricks to make your artwork more accurate and generally better. Plus, hes not bad to look at and hes super friendly. Take him. I wish he taught every class.
I wish I could put a before and after shot to show how much I have improved in his class. the projects are fun. u make ur own still lives so u dont have to draw bottles for hours. He gives great pointers and useful techniques. I will have produced 6 portfolio pieces by the end of this class. Theres enough class time so you dont have much hw.
DON NOT hesitate to take his class. he is an amazing professor. i took him for drawing II and life drawing I. I learned a lot. he grades frailly easy
He is an amazing teacher!! My favorite yet at any college I've been at. He is funny and nice, and very good at helping with work. He will help you get better and understands that everyone has different styles and abilities. He let's you re-submit work for another grade. He is wonderful. I am already signed up to take him again next quarter
he really gives great individual attention to everyone. lots of extra help sessions and you can sit in on an extra class if you'd like. he's very easy-going and really a wonderful teacher.
One of my favorite professors at SCAD. extremely helpful and always willing to come in on his own time and help you out. i also saw myself improve greatly as the class went on. definitely take him whenever possible.
One of the best professors around. I had him for Drawing II and am taking him again for Life Drawing. Knowledgeable and trustworthy, the only flaw is his (at best) eclectic taste in music.
He is very helpful and gives you tips, good projects and plenty of time to finish them. I highly recommend this professor and I took him again for Life Drawing II. I think maybe he could have pushed people harder though. If you have trouble drawing he is an excellent professor.
McKinnon gives his students to chance to resubmit their work after critique. This made my skill's grow immensely. The intensity and diversity of the workload helped me improve and more versatile as well. All works are done through direct observation, including the self-portraits. The mediums used are charcoal, color pencils, and color pastels.
Hes pretty cool, had him for Drawing 2 and had a steady B, he was definitely understanding towards kids who were having difficulties in the class (and from what i heard graded them according to their own abilities)<Which is Awesome! He knows what he's talking about and really wants to help you. he let us resubmit our work if we wanted. !"Awesome"!
I had him almost a year ago, and he is still the best professor Ive ever had, hands down. He is extremely helpful, intelligent, and personable. I learned more about drawing than I ever knew existed. You can resubmit work. He plays good music. As long as he's teaching, don't ever take another professor. 100% worth it.
McKinnon is one of my favorite professors. Very clear, very helpful, most structured and helpful critiques. Fun projects. He grades well, but you will not get the coveted "A+" unless you do something truly breathtaking (30+ hrs). I will ALWAYS recommend him.
He is the NICEST. GUY. His Drawing II is a lot of work (10-15 hrs of hw at least per project, and there are six projects), but it's worth it. Great critiques. His projects are interesting too. All his students' work may not be as impressive as Rise's (if you see works hanging up at Wallin), but there was definite improvement in EVERYONE'S work.
Best art teacher I've ever had. He pushes students to do the very best (realistic) drawings they can and gives you time to re-work after a critique. Gives amazing advice without putting you down and honestly works to improve you as an artist. Be prepared to put forth a lot of work (and money for supplies!)
THIS GUY IS AWESOME!!!He is a very reasonable guy, and connects well with all of his students. His hw for Draw 100 is a lot of still life's, but don't worry if you aren't going into a major that involves drawing, he will be very helpful either way or another. I'm about to take his draw 101 class!THE BEST TEACHER EVER-YONE NEEDS TO TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He is very very very very GOOD!!! He is so close to making the list for the top highest rated teachers on this site... so that tells you a lot about him! everyone take his class! that's a command =]
AWESOME PROFESSOR!! He help me make my decision to minor in illustration. He fueled my love for drawing. I can see how my work has improved so much during the quarter. HE IS A MUST TO TAKE FOR ANY DRAWING CLASS!
He is a really nice teacher, who is helpful and friendly. He does more than just help, he teach you ways in which you can improve. I wish I would have had him for other classes. You should definitely take him if you can!
Don't buy the textbook! Rarely used it. Great professor, gives excellent feedbacks without hurting your feelings. Very clear on what he wants, his works are amazing, and very patient, doesn't get annoyed if you ask same question twice. Gives you a chance to resubmit your work, allows you to do work in class, exams are very easy as
Professor McKinnon is a must take! MUST TAKE not mistake. lol. But anyways, he's super duper helpfull. He'll come around while you're working and tell you exactly what you can do to fix your drawings. Allows you to rework all drawings. Not an easy A but you'll learn a lot. I've been drawing all my life and still barely made an A. But
Everyone should take Professor McKinnon. He is extremely easy as well as a nice genuine guy. It's one of those classes where you can bust your ass if you want, or put in minimal effort but still end up with a decent grade.
McKinnon is fantastic. He gives you so much creative freedom with each project. Because of this great control over each of your projects, you find yourself working harder. They're so fun, and I can't believe some of the things I've created in his class! As someone else stated, this class (much like college) is what you make of it. TAKE HIM!
He might be a little to nice. No one ever got a bad critique.
The most helpful and kindest professor I've had at SCAD. The best ever, actually. Acknowledges and notices true and genuine efforts. Very personable, supportive and understanding of all his students. Highly recommended.
BEST professor EVER!! LITERALLY
McKinnon is literally one of my favorite teachers I have ever had in my whole life. He is really nice and really helpful. I've learned so much from him.
Great teacher, very helpful! I had a hard time getting an A, but drawing is not my strongest subject. I definitely recommend you take his class.
Extremely helpful! Gives you very clear critiques and show techniques to help you improve.
Hes a good teacher; lots of energy. The work isnt hard but the level of perfection in the short TIME he demands is STRESSFUL. His courseload inteferes with coursework for other classes. I wouldnt take him especially if you work!
Mckinnon is a FANTASTIC teacher! He takes the time to help everyone learn both individually and as a group. If you don't get something he doesn't react negatively but works with you to find a solution that you understand. I recommend him to anyone who struggles with drawing as I did and by the end I received a pretty decent grade! Take him!
I have taken many drawing classes before this (I am a transfer student) and I still learned so much. He is so helpful and truly wants you to succeed. He has exta help sessions for every project and you will always be able to rework your projects. Do these things and you will see your drawing improve and you will not fail.
He is super helpful if you ask questions. He is really great at what he does and it shows in his class. I felt that it was really good to go to class just to get his feedback on your progress. You do need to work outside of class somewhat but it's not too bad. I felt that he was fair with grading for the most part but a bit tough. Totally recommend
Loved this class! It's challenging and rewarding with a wonderful professor. If you really put in the effort you will get a good grade. Highly recommend his class 100%!
TAKE THIS MAN. You will NOT be disappointed. He is incredibly helpful, and was probably the best teacher to teach you how to draw. I came in knowing how to draw, but he helped me to use colored pencils and helped tons of people in fashion, film, and other majors who had never drawn before (and they all did really well!) 100% recommend.
McKinnon is an awesome teacher and I would recommend anyone who needs to taking drawing 101 to take him. He does a lot of still lives and a few portraits. He is not a harsh grader but don't slack off or you'll loose a ton of points. He's a very nice person who is willing to help you in any way.
McKinnon is super energetic and usually comes to class equipped with a friendly smile. He's constantly running around the class trying to make sure everyone gets help with their project. He's not such a stickler on art style so much as you just fulfilling the grading criteria on projects. I can't recommend him enough :)
Mckinnon is a great teacher and person in general. There is absolutely no reason I wouldn't take his class again. I wish I could redo this class and put 100% of my effort into it. Really helpful, interesting projects, class critiques, chances to rework projects before grading. You will work hard, but you'll love it.
Let me just start by saying, I had no natural drawing ability. I was nervous to take his class because his expectations seemed incredibly high but Patrick really meets you where you are and will do whatever it takes to help you produce your best work. He is always available to help and very positive. His energy and quirkiness is endearing!
Mickinnon is such an inspiration! He's so full of energy, young at heart, and practically emits passion! He gives amazing feedback during critiques (which do take up an entire class period) and will always be there for you. He even encourages you to send pics of your wips to his email- I'd take again! (He's also handsome!)
Prof. McKinnon is very passionate. He really gets to know each of his students, and all of his projects have the same, clear criteria. McKinnon's class allows you to experiment with media such as charcoal, pastel, and colored pencil. Projects consists of still lives and self portraits. He really teaches you how to master drawing.
I have nothing but mad respect for this guy. He also is SO passionate and upbeat about drawing and teaching students. I've improved so much over a 10 week period. It's hard work (not going to lie about that), but it's definitely manageable! I'm not an amazing drawer, but I managed to get an A.
His drawing class will push you - but not too hard. It's not an easy A but it's not something you'll have to stress over too much. He really cares about his students and focusing on your own growth and improvement.
Very nice guy. Has a little bit of trouble controlling a class. Very cute. He is an amazing artist and will tell you if something is wrong with your art.
I loved Mr. McKinnon! He talks really fast, but will help you as many times needed. I am not a studio artist and don't plan on becoming one but he helped me be more confident and just draw. He emails right back and with great feedback. Always has extra help sessions! Take his class!
The lest bs class I've ever taken at SCAD. Having no talent in drawing, I was not looking forward to the class but he gives you everything you need to know and not a breath of anything else. He's an efficient professor who really knows what battles to pick and is quite forgiving on most issues.
Honestly a great professor. If you really want to grow as an artist show interest and he will help you produce your best work. I learned so much in such a short period of time. Email him on every assignment!! It helps so much with grading. There's extra help for every project too. Good Luck!
One of the best drawing teachers I have had. He is knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. Compared to what I have heard of other classes his projects are interesting and fun! Gives very helpful feedback during work periods and critiques. Gives opportunities to improve and resubmit work for grading. I would recommend him to anyone!
Mckinnon is a pretty great professor, although his projects can sometimes be a bit of a handful. Critique days are always super helpful and he's always willing to let you know how you can improve your work. Overall I think I learned so much from this class and if that's you're goal I'd say absolutely sign up for it.
McKinnon is amazing! I learned so much in his class and I would highly recommend him to anyone. He's really clear with explanations and he's very helpful during class.
McKinnon is an amazing drawing teacher! He'll definitely push you to do your best, but he'll never be unfair or intolerant towards you. I draw, but realism is not my thing, and my self-portraits never looked like me- but in this class I was able to render the closest likeness to me than I ever have before. I've been learning a lot, and that's what I came here to do. Take this professor if you can! I'd take his class again in a heartbeat. Awesome guy.
I really learned a lot. I went in not knowing too much. Never made me feel bad about it and was always ready to help in great ways. A lot of work but worth it
Best drawing prof. I've ever taken. He is passionate about drawing, and knows a lot about creating good drawings. I've learned so much, and drew some of the best work in his class. He is a easy grader, just keep your compositions simple. I will say he does have a lot of still lifes and a couple self portraits, so be aware of that!
McKinnon is a wonderful professor. He not only knows what he's teaching extremely well, but teaches it almost effortlessly. He does his job with heart, and makes sure that each student is given attention and not looked over. I highly recommend this class, I learned so much!
He is an AMAZING drawing teacher! I had him at 8 am every monday and wednesday and he was always energized and willing to help. His quick talking also helped move things along faster as well. harder grader than at my old school but totally worth it!
McKinnon is a great guy, even if he may not remember your name. His teaching is very straightforward and he is very accessible at extra help sessions. You learn so many different materials in this class which I enjoyed, but it can be frustrating at times. Great Drawing 2 Professor!
McKinnon is hands down the best professor I have ever had. My drawing skills improved 10 fold in 10 weeks. He is willing to put in as much work as you are and wants to see you succeed. The assignments are difficult and time consuming but worth it in the end. Will help you 24/7 if you need. Critiques are very helpful as well. 100% worth taking.
Great Professor! I would definitely take his class again!
He is by far the best drawing professor that scad has to offer. My drawing skills improved immensely and he is always willing to help
McKinnon quickly became one of my favorite professors at SCAD, and favorite teachers ever from DRAW101. He does talk a little fast, but he's hardly confusing about anything. He's funny, and he's great at giving advice on drawings without being too critical. I genuinely think I've improved at drawing from his class, I wish I could take it again!
McKinnon is an awesome professor. He gives a very specific breakdown of what he expects exactly. You dont need to be super talented to receive a high grade in his class. He just expects to see you try your hardest, show up prepared and eager to work. Hes super understanding and is always available via email. His class seriously helped me!
Incredible professor! McKinnon is always available via email, provides constructive feedback and critique, & pushes students to try their best regardless of ability. He also allows a great deal of variety & choice in subject matter for projects. You'll do two or three self portraits, a perspective, & several still lives which you assemble yourself.
McKinnon is the best hands down!!!!! Gives great feedback and really pushes you to do your best. I improved so much from his class. Take him if you can!
I was in a very competitive class but he walks around to help everyone. Super nice and helpful, clear grading criteria and usually avaliable over email. If you put in effort it will pay off in this class. Amazing professor, probably one of the best at SCAD.
McKinnon gives the best critiques because he'll say something nice and inspirational to you and then suggest ways that you can fix your work. He doesn't try to tear you down or give advice that isn't helpful. The best part is that after class critiques, he lets you turn in the assignment the next class so you can use the critique to fix it.
The hype on McKinnon is sooo well deserved. I learned more about drawing (im an ad major) from his first class than my entire last quarter of drawing 1. Mostly charcoal drawings with color pencil and pastels at the end. He's so helpful and has a lot of extra help sessions, and will email you over the weekends with help. He's great. Take him!
Professor McKinnon is great!!! He honestly cares so much and just wants to see you improve. I am a horrible drawer and he helped as much as he could to improve my skills. Projects are fun, wish there was a little more time with them, but he lets to work on them after critique and turn them in the next class!!! TAKE HIM!!!
Projects require a lot of time outside of class. Grading scale is super clear. You'll cover a variety of materials and techniques in this class and he has an extra help session for each project on Sundays. He always answers emails really fast and is a super friendly guy. Great critiques, learned a lot in his class. Would highly recommend.
He's your cheerleader for the work that you do and his lectures are super informative! Make sure to get majority of your work done by critique and you'll be set. Additionally, his feedback is amazing. I've really grown as an artist in this class, I 'd for sure take this class again!
Professor Mckinnon was by far one of the best teachers I had. He genuinely cares for his students and wants them to succeed and reach beyond there potential. we had 6 projects overall. He pushes you to be the best and gives constructive criticism. NO TEXTBOOKS OR TEST EVER!
I think McKinnon is one of the best drawing professors at scad. He gives a lot of feedback and helps you out a lot and his class doesnt have small assignments like Sketchbooks and etc. Make sure youre okay with working large though. Even the color pencil project was 22x30 which was honestly insane. Other than that though it was a great class.
I cant rememeber a more compassionate sensible communicator coupled with a willingness to communicate clearly and without force and resentment. Professor McKinnon rises above any teacher Ive had at SCAD and can even teach the most difficult aspects of drawing in a way and pace that allows knowledge and with knowledge comes passionate work.
One of my favorite teachers so far. Great comments and helps you make your piece better. Projects are on the large scale (22x30) but very fun to do. Makes sure everyone gets one-on-one time to discuss projects. Last project has so much freedom
Patrick has been one of my favorite professors that I've ever had! His feedback was always constructive, and never needlessly negative or mean. He took the time to get to know students enough to know how their design processes worked and always pushed us towards new opportunities!
Absolutely the best professor Ive ever had in my life. He is also a wonderful human being. His class is so well executed without the nonsense so many other teachers offer in dismal confusing punishment. The load of work is dense but rewarding. He teaches you to draw! Go figure!
I highly recommend this teacher, especially if you need to improve your observational drawing. His Drawing 2 class is all on 22x30 paper and from life (except for the final, which can be any media -- even digital), and you'll do a few still lifes and a few portraits. I prefer to draw cartoons, but this class really challenged me to hone my skills.
If you want to spit out a ton of amazing art, take McKinnon. He really makes you work, but his projects are interesting and you get to do 6 pieces in 10 weeks. He is also the most caring professor I've ever met. He makes sure to help every student. The best thing is you get to draw 2-3 self portraits, so you'll really learn how to draw faces well.
I loved Professor McKinnon's class. You can tell he is very passionate about what he does and does everything he can to help his students. His class comes with a bit of work, but it's nothing unreasonably terrible, and he hosts extra help sessions where you can get feedback and work on your piece more on the weekends. I would take this class again!
A man with a true passion for his work, and the work of his students. Very patient, open, and willing to help anyone that's willing to put in the effort. I just wish the class was in person at the end of it. Has help sessions often and will always respond to an email. If you take this class, do it in person if the opportunity allows!
The professor is very kind and will help teach you new things. Overall the class really helped improve my drawing skills. If you ever need any help with any project go to extra help sessions they are very helpful. He is the best professor I've had so far.
The best professor I've had here at SCAD! He really cares about seeing each and every student improve on their skills. He spends class giving individual feedback and is willing to sit with you until you feel comfortable on your own. He even brought in his personal materials for me to use. Very caring and fair grader! 100% recommend for draw II
I wasnt really confident in my drawing but Professor McKinnon really helped me shine. He provided constructive feedback and helped me do my best. Hes really talented and loves all of his students. He is very fast paced though, he talks quite fast and gets projects done in a timely manner. If you work hard and take time, you wont be disappointed.
Expect assignment after assignment, graded for realism without the class time to really teach how to use the materials. Still life, with occasional portraits, and random materials. He is a very nice man, but I didn't learn anything in this class.
